Résumé :
The study examined helminth parasites of cultured Clarias gariepinus and Tilapia zillii in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. A total of 60 fish samples (30 each of C.gariepinus and T. zillii) were subjected to parasitological examinations. Results revealed a total of 47(78.33%) fishes infected with various species of parasites: Nematodes (Camallanus polypteri, Paracamallanus cyathopharynx, and Procamallanus laevionchus), Cestodes (Polyonchobothrium torulosus and P. clariae) and Trematodes (Dactylogyrus extensus and Glossiduim pedatum) in decreasing order of abundance. Out of the 60 fish samples examined, 47 were infected with 219 parasites: 142(64.84%) nematodes, 40(18.26%) cestodes and 37(16.89%) trematodes. A total of 159(72.60%) parasites were recovered from C. gariepinus out of which 103(64.78%) were nematodes, 19(18.45%) were cestodes and 37(35.92%) were trematodes. While 60(27.40%) parasites were recovered from T. zilli, of which 39(65.00%) were nematodes and 21(35.00%) cestodes. No trematode was observed in the tilapia. The overall prevalence of parasitic infection was 78.33%. The results of chi square analysis showed that females of both species had significantly higher (P<0.05) prevalence of infection 27(84.4%) than males 20(71.4%). Also, C. gariepinus had higher infection rate of 25(83.33%) when compared to 22(73.33%) recorded in T. zillii. Key words: fish parasites, aquaculture, prevalence, C. gariepinus, T. zillii

Résumé :
Gillnet selectivity of Coptodon zillii was estimated in this study to determine the appropriate mesh size for the exploitation of the fish in Asejire dam. Holt’s indirect method of estimation was used to estimate gillnet selectivity of C. zillii in Asejire dam. Three mesh sizes 50.8mm, 63.5mm and 76.2mm were used for the estimation. The result shows that these mesh sizes caught C. zillii that were significantly different in sizes and abundant (P < 0.05). The 63.5 mm mesh size of gillnet was the most efficient; it caught 150 C. zillii with length range of 13 – 22 cm. Also, 50.8 mm mesh size caught137 C. zillii with length range of 11 – 18 cm. Likewise, 76.2 mm mesh size caught 57 C. zillii with length range 16 – 24 cm. The optimum length of 50.8 mm mesh size was 14.78 cm, 63.5 mm was 18.48 cm and 76.2 mm was 22.17 cm. Mesh size of 63.5mm is recommended as the appropriate mesh size for the exploitation of C. zillii in Asejire dam for the sustainability of the fish. This is done to prevent both recruitment and growth overfishing of C. zillii in Asejire dam. Résumé :
Cichlids are invasive fish to Iraqi waters and became well established and prevailing in different waters. Despite that, there is no stock assessment study conducted for these fish. So, growth, mortality, recruitment and yield-per-recruit of two cichlid’s species; Coptodon zillii and Oreochromis aureus from the Shatt Al-Arab River, Iraq were evaluated from November 2015 to October 2016 using the FiSAT software. A total of 1285 C. zillii (2.9-24.0 cm TL) and 1353 O. aureus (4.5-25.0 cm TL) were examined. Length-weight relationships were derived, indicating allometric growth for both species. The growth parameters (L?, K, Rn, to and ?) obtained for C. zillii were 25.5 cm, 0.320, 0.212, -0.793 and 2.318, respectively, while for O. aureus were 27.8, 0.490, 0.214, -0.271 and 2.578, respectively. The annual rate of total mortality (Z), fishing (F) and natural (M) for C. zillii was found to be 1.51, 0.84 and 0.68 respectively, and for O. aureus 2.49, 1.08 and 1.41, respectively. The present exploitation rates (Epresent) for C. zillii and O. aureus were computed to be 0.454 and 0.57, respectively. Lengths at first capture (LC) were 12.97 cm for C. zillii and 13.25 cm for O. aureus. The peaks of recruitment of C. zillii and O. aureus were from February to May and May to July, respectively. The Epresent for C. zillii and O. aureus were below the biological target reference points (F0.1 and Fmax), indicating that these species were not overexploited. For management purposes, more yields could be obtained by an increase in the fishing activities on cichlids.

Résumé :
Age, growth, mortality, relative yield-per-recruit and relative biomass-per-recruit of Oreochromis aureus and Tilapia zilli collected from Wadi EI-Raiyan lakes during the period from August 2000 until July 2001 have been estimated. Age was determined from scale readings and the results showed that the maximum life spans of O. aureus and T. zilli were three and four years, respectively. The von Bertalanffy growth equations were L1= 27.15 (l-e'0.56(t+0.32) for 0. aureus and L1= 33.5 (l-e -0.49(t+0.15) for T. zilli. The instantaneous annual rates of total, natural and fishing mortality were calculated as 1.69, 0.25 and 1.44, respectively for 0. aureus and 1.1, 0.2 and 0.9, respectively for T. zilli. Exploitation rate was estimated as 0.85 and 0.82 for 0. aureus and T. zilli, respectively. Relative yield-per- recruit and relative biomass-per-recruit analysis indicated that the stocks of O. aureus and T. zilli were overexploited and that the current exploitation rate should be reduced by about 53% for 0. aureus and 55% for T. zilli to ensure that at least 50% of the individuals could be maintained for spawning and recruitment.

Résumé :
The diet composition and trophic relationships of the blue tilapia, Oreochromis aureus and redbelly tilapia, Coptodon zillii were investigated in the Shatt Al-Arab river from November 2015 to October 2016. Fishes were collected by gill nets, cast net and electro-fishing. The index of relative importance (IRI%) of food items was determined by combining the frequency of occurrence and points methods. There were monthly variations in feeding activity and intensity of both species, which decreased in the colder months. Both species were classified as herbivores. The main food items of O. aureus were macrophytes (44.3%), algae (31.4%), diatoms (9.3%), aquatic insects (6.6%) and detritus (6.3%). The diet of C. zillii is composed mainly of macrophytes (60.8%), algae (23.0%), detritus (8.6%) and diatoms (6.4). The trophic niche breadth values varied between 0.217 for C. zillii and 0.360 for O. aureus. The results demonstrated a high degree of dietary overlap between O. aureus and C. zillii, as both species fed on the same food sources

Résumé :
An investigation into evolutionary history of four species of Tilapia species was carried out as a taxonomy tool to relate most tilapia species found within the Nigerian waters. These species are (Oreochromis niloticus, Tilapia zilli, Sarotherodon galilaeus, Sarotherodon melanotheron). Blood samples from the four species of tilapia were collected and preserved on Fast Technology for Analysis (FTA) cards for DNA extraction and PCR amplification. The various nucleotide sequences of the four Tilapia species found in the Mitochondria D-loop region were copied and aligned with the use of BioEdit and Mega 6.0 softwares. Three phylogenetic trees were drawn to show the evolutionary relationship amongst the four species of tilapia. The results indicated that Sarotherodon galilaeus and Sarotherodon melanotheron are sister texa and share a common ancestor with Oreochromis niloticus. Tilapia zilli is an out group which is the most distantly related to the three species (Oreochromis niloticus, Sarotherodon galilaeus Sarotherodon melanotheron). Tilapia zilli (Israel) and Tilapia zilli are sister texa and share a common ancestor in Tilapia sparmanii. The study also revealed ancestry relationship among other species of fish Cyprinus caprio and Clarias gariepinus formed a clade with the three tilapia species (Tilapia zilli, Tilapia zilli (Israel) and Tilapia sparmanii), which share an unknown but common ancestor.

Résumé :
The food and feeding habits of the redbelly Tilapia (Tilapia zillii) and Guenther’s mouthbrooder (Chromidotilapia guntheri) were investigated in an abandoned gold mine reservoir at Igun from June 2013 to May 2014. Using a cast net and gill-net fishing gears, 370 fish individuals were caught and their stomach contents were analysed by using the frequency of occurrence and numerical methods. Tilapia zillii comprised 53.78% (199 individuals), while Chromidotilapia guntheri covered up the remaining percentage (46.22%) which is made up of 171 individuals. Food items in the stomachs of T. zillii individuals predominantly consisted of detritus, mud and algae (77.97%), while those in C. guntheri individuals mostly consisted fish remains, detritus and algae (81.67%). T. zillii exploited more food items (23 of 27) as compared to C. guntheri (17 of 27). The Schoener’s index value for the species was 0.65. The study showed that T. zillii and C. guntheri exhibited benthopelagic exploitation and are mainly herbivorous and omnivorous respectively based on the food items observed in the stomach contents of these species. The fish species fed on related food items as confirmed by Schoener’s overlap index (0.65), suggesting that there was overlap in the dietary requirements of the two species. This index value, however, was probably not an indication of competition for food between these two species because they exploited abundant food sources.

Résumé :
This study investigated several, previously little-known, aspects of reproductive physiology and endocrinology in the substrate-spawning cÌchlid Tilapia zillii; a tilapia that is becoming increasingly popular in world aquaculture. Studies were undertaken in controlled laboratory aquaria, thereby reducing the potential influence of environmental variation evident in many previous field studies of this species. Analysis involved two strains of T. zillii: strain 'A' (T. zillii) and strain 'B' (formerly known as Tilapia tholloni). Spawning periodicity and total fecundity generally increased with fish size. Egg size varied within a narrow window and did not generally increase with fish size though fish weighing 100 - 200g tended to produce the largest eggs. The best estimate of spawning periodicity was considered to be 'mean days elapsed/spawn' as this figure was based upon both spawning and non-spawning fish in an experimental group. Mean days elapsed/spawn increased with increasing fish size and averaged 61.4 days and 37.5 days in strains 'A' and 'B' respectively. The shortest reproductive cycles observed were just 7 days and 6 days for strains 'A' and 'B' respectively. Total fecundity ranged from 461 - 11640 eggs/clutch. Mean total fecundity was 3606+/-280 in strain 'A' and 3560+/-243 in strain 'B'. Mean egg diameter was 1.5+/-0.04mm and 1.4+/-0.08mm in strains 'A' and 'B' respectively. Fecundity and egg size also varied over successive spawns in serial-spawning females but these variations did not appear to be related to spawning periodicity. Regression analysis revealed strong relationships between fish size (weight and length) and total fecundity, relative fecundity and total egg volume. Relationships between fish size and egg size were generally much weaker. Fecundity and egg size were related to the length of the preceding inter-spawn-interval (ISI) in fish of certain weight categories but not others, providing limited evidence that length of ISI may in par, control fecundity and egg size in this species. Ovarian recrudescence was classified into ten distinct developmental stages based upon oocyte size, biochemical properties and structure. This classification scheme was comparable to classification schemes developed for other teleosts but represents the first detailed description of oocyte growth in a substrate-spawning tilapia. Radioimmunoassay and stereological analysis provided valuable and novel data concerning the dynamics of ovarian development in this species. Levels of 17ßoestradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) peaked within 6 days of spawning, suggesting that vitellogenesis began as early as day 2 or 3 post-spawning. By day 8, ovaries were dominated by large late-vitellogenic/maturing oocytes (stages 6 & 7) occupying 60 - 70% of the ovary. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) reached maximal levels by day 14. Since the proportion of stage 6/7 oocytes exhibited little change from day 8 onwards, it is suggested that pre-vitellogenic oocytes are recruited into vitellogenic growth immediately after spawning and complete vitellogenesis as early as day 8 postspawning. Analysis of serial-spawning fish found that initial post-spawn E2 and T peaks (on days 2 - 6) were much lower after the second spawning. Sex steroid levels were also found to be suppressed in confined T. zillii (i.e. where stocking densities were > lOkg/m3). Confined females failed to spawn but displayed a marked tendency to do so after transfer to individual aquaria. Serum E2 and T were suppressed during confinement but increased rapidly following transfer to individual aquaria (coincident with resumed spawning activity). It is suggested that levels of E2 and T under confinement are not sufficient to allow completion of vitellogenic growth and are most probably suppressed via a pheromonal mechanism. Finally, the present study investigated the effect of prolonged food restriction on various aspects of reproduction. T. zillii were rationed from first feeding and throughout the following 17 months. Despite very large differences in fish size, no significant differences were detected in total fecundity, egg diameter nor total egg volume once data had been adjusted for differences in fish size. These data suggest that despite very large differences in food availability throughout the periods of sexual differentiation and on-growing, investment in reproduction remained relatively consistent. It appeared that during food restriction, T. zillii sacrificed body weight and growth so as to maintain reproductive investment. In summary, this study provides valuable and novel information regarding the reproductive physiology and endocrinology of female T. zillii and suggests that this species may be a suitable 'model' species for future work on fecundity and ovarian development.

Neat, Francis Columba. « Behavioural and physiological studies of fighting in male Tilapia Zillii (Cichlidae) ». Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1996. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/5039/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis is a compilation of several behavioural and physiological studies of fighting in a species of African cichlid fish, Tilapia zillii. The behavioural studies are concerned with explaining the functional significance and behavioural organisation of fighting. The physiological studies are concerned with attempting to elucidate the mechanisms that underlie the expression of aggressive behaviour. My aim is show how these two levels of study are related and why it is important to maintain a balance between them in the study of animal behaviour. Chapter 2 reports a senes of laboratory experiments that investigated how asymmetries in body size and gonadal state influence the fighting strategies of male T. zillii, Fights between animals over limited resources often end in victory to the larger contestant. Game theory predicts that relative body size is assessed during the fight and thus also determines fight duration and intensity. However, if the contestants differ in the value they place on the disputed resource, this can override the effects of relative body size. In the experiment described here, relative gonad weight was a much stronger predictor of fight outcome than relative body size. This suggests that males with large gonads fight harder to defend their territory, implying that the value of a territory is a function of the gonadal state of the individual. Despite this, a detailed behavioural analysis suggested that relative body size is assessed through a behaviour termed 'mouth wrestling'. In addition to persisting in the fight, smaller contestants escalated to a higher degree (in terms of biting), especially if they went on to win the tight. Winners and losers differed consistently with regard to a behaviour termed mouth locking, suggesting that through this behaviour the fish were assessing an asymmetry related to the intention to persist with the fight, although I could not demonstrate that this was related to relative gonad weight. Chapter 3 was undertaken with the aim of gaining information on the social structure and occurrence of aggressive behaviours in a semi-natural environment. To this end, a study was made of the social interactions of a group of male fish allowed free range over approximately ten metres of artificial 'river bed' during a four week period. Under these conditions, the social structure of T. zillii may be described as a loose group with an unstable dominance hierarchy. Aggression is a major component of this species' time budget, with different acts and degrees of escalation probably functioning to establish, challenge and maintain dominance relationships within the hierarchy. The expression of territorial behaviour appeared to be conditional upon social status (only the two top ranked males were seen to dig nests and consistently court females). One escalated fight was observed between the two highest ranked fish, but it was not clear whether this was a territorial dispute, a challenge for the top position, or a dispute over both. Thus, while the immediate reasons for escalated fighting between male T. zillii depends upon the social and physical environment, it is probably ultimately caused by competition for mating opportunities. Chapter 4 deals with the issue of how body size and gonadal state relate to life-history aspects of the animal by means of a morphometric analysis. The analysis provided evidence to suggest that there was a trade off between gonad size and the storage of fat It is not clear whether this relationship arises from a direct energetic trade-off or is a result of adopting different behavioural strategies. I also explored the relationship between behaviour, morphology and somatic and reproductive condition. It was possible to predict gonadal state on the basis of mouth morphology which may explain why so much fighting involves use of the mouth in this species. In Chapter 5 I studied the proximate costs of fighting in terms of physical injury and the metabolic consequences of engaging in a energetically demanding activity. In relation to injuries incurred during fights, losers suffered greater scale loss than winners, especially if the loser was larger than its opponent. In relation to energy metabolism, fighting resulted in significant depletion of total sugar reserves from the muscle and the liver (compared to unfought controls). It appears that the muscle energy reserves are respired anaerobically, as was evident from the accumulation of lactate in the muscle. Interestingly, losers had significantly higher levels of lactate than winners. Together, the data on injury and metabolic state suggest that fighting is costly for both winners and losers, but that this is especially marked for losers. These data are discussed in relation to models of animal decision-making and it is concluded that the summation of different proximate costs incurred during fighting is likely to underlie the making of decisions such as continuing, giving up or escalating the fight. In Chapter 6 I report a study of plasma concentrations of gonadal steroids in T. zillii in relation to fighting and gonadal state. The gonadal steroids, particularly the androgens, have been shown to be associated with aggression in a wide range of species and seemed like obvious candidates for the mechanism by which gonadal state influences behaviour Blood samples were taken from fish immediately after fighting and the plasma concentrations of the following gonadal steroids were then determined by radioimmunoassay: testosterone (T), l l-ketotestosterone (1IkT) and 17a,20~- Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20-P) and estradiol (Ez). T concentrations did not correlate with GSI and no differences were detected between winners, losers and unfought controls. II kT concentrations were on average twice those of T and negatively correlated to GSI, although winners, losers and controls were not significantly different. T and II kT concentrations were positively correlated with each other but 17,20-P and Ez levels were too low to be accurately measured. It appears that in T. zillii, II kT is the major androgen as it is in most other mature male teleosts. While the present results suggest that these sex steroids may play a role in physiological regulation of testicular maturation, they do not support the idea that these steroids are the mechanism by which GSI influences aggressive behaviour. In Chapter 7 I review the main conclusions of the previous chapters. I then offer my personal opinion on how the different levels and approaches taken throughout the study interrelate and collectively reinforce each other and why integration between disciplines is important in the study of animal behaviour.

Despite the increasing burden of cardiovascular disease, vascular tissue engineering strategies have had limited success in achieving long-term patency in grafts less than 4 mm in diameter. Graft failure is often due to occlusion by thrombosis or intimal hyperplasia. Recognizing the capacity of endothelial cells (ECs) to properly coordinate these processes in vivo, much research has investigated the use of ECs to line the lumens of vascular grafts to improve patency (Zilla et al. 1994). However, the limited availability of autologous ECs and the donor site morbidity resulting from EC harvest has limited the clinical potential of these cellularized constructs.
