Résumé :
With the increasing demand and interest in wind power worldwide, it is interesting to study the effects of running windfarms on the activity of reindeers and estimate the associated Zone of Influence (ZOI) relative to these disturbances. Through simulation, Hierarchical Likelihood (HL) and adaptive Lasso methods are used to estimate the ZOI of windfarms and catching the correct threshold at which the negative effect of the disturbances on the reindeer behaviour disappears. The results found some merit to the explanation that the negative effect may not disappear abruptly and more merit to the fact that a linear model was still a better choice than the smooth polynomial models used. A real-life data related to reindeer faecal pellet counts from an area in northern Sweden were windfarms were running were analyzed. The yearly time series data was divided into three periods : before construction, during construction and during operation of the windfarms. Logistic regression, segmented model, and HL methods were implemented for data analysis by using covariates as distance from wind turbine, vegetation type, the interaction between distance to wind turbine and time period. A significant breakpoint could be estimated using the segmented model at a distance of 2.8 km from running windfarm, after which the negative effects of the windfarm on the reindeer activity disappeared. However, further work is needed for estimation of ZOI using HL method and considering other possible factors causing disturbances to the reindeer habitat and behaviour.

ABSTRACT: The amphibolitic rocks outcropping in Ovar-Espinho region (OMZ), considered of precambrian age, belonging to the “Série Negra”, are interlayed in phylites from the chloritoid zone (amphibolitic schists) and in migmatites (amphibolites). The amphibolitic rocks that occur in the Oliveira de Azeméis region (CIZ), are amphibolites considered to be part of the “Complexo Xisto-Grauváquico Ante- Ordovícico”. All amphibolitic rock samples studied were, as the adjacent metapelitic rocks, affected by metamorphism and by Variscan deformation. The study of metamorphic mineralogical associations of these rocks confirms that they were metamorphized in conditions of epidote-amphibolitic (Ovar-Espinho amphibolitic schists) and amphibolitic facies. The determination of the protolith based in field and/or petrographic data it’s not possible due to the obliteration of original characteristics from the deformation process and metamorphism. Only some samples in the epidote-amphibolitic facies preserve textures that can be interpreted as relict igneous textures. The geochemical study allows recognizing that all protolith metabasites would be igneous, from basaltic and basaltic-andesitic composition of tholeiitic character and would represent liquids of composition affected by magmatic differentiation processes. From the geochemical point of view, the Ovar-Espinho metabasites are classified in three groups, having in account the different types of REE and multi-element patterns and the information given by the discrimination diagrams. The group 1 is only represented by the protolith of some samples of amphibolitic schists and is related with a N-MORB type depleted source. The group 3 has an opposite character to group 1 highlighted by the global enrichment of the incompatible elements contents, an enrichment more accentuated in Th, La, Ce, and in the ratio Th/U and by the negative anomalies in Nb and Ti. The group 2 has transitional characteristics between the ones of the group 1 and 3. The enrichment that characterizes the group 3 is similar to the one of the basalts of destructive margins in the discrimination diagrams where the Th is used. However it is not recognized in the discrimination diagrams where is considered the fO2 or the absence of depletion in incompatible elements characteristics of orogenic magma. The geochemical characteristics are compatible with the effect produced by basalts astenospheric contamination with acidic rocks or with the upper crust, in result of country rock assimilation during the magma ascension. The compositional variability of the Ovar-Espinho metabasites is interpreted as reflecting the combined process of fractionated crystallization and contamination by crustal material. Therefore, the Ovar-Espinho metabasites are interpreted as being cogenetics, anorogenics and corresponding to continental tholeiites. The preliminary comparative analysis of the geochemical data of the Ovar- Espinho metabasites and others from the OMZ, belonging to the “Série Negra”, referred in the literature, allow to conclude that the same effects produced by crustal contamination in basic magmas depleted of tholeiitic character would be also represented. The same geochemical effects can, according to the literature data and samples analysis, are not represented in metabasites of the Oliveira de Azeméis and Caramulo region, that are considered to be from the Paleozoic. The application of the 39Ar/40Ar method in the amphibole of an amphibolite resulted in a plateau age of 309,8 ± 3,6 My, being considered from Variscan age. The 87Rb/86Sr mineral isopote data of plagioclase, amphibole and whole rock of the same sample define a pseudoisochron of 166 ± 14 My. Recalculating the data to 310 My (assuming as the age the Variscan metamorphism) it was concluded the existence of a isotopic disequilibrium at the time of the metamorphism and that at the time of the metamorphic recrystallization the plagioclase and amphibole had different isotopic compositions, reflecting probably the isotopic heterogeneity of the material from which they derived.

Though the analysis of the moral monodic conductus by the poet, preacher and theologist Philip the Chancellor, the rhetorical qualities of this work are revealed both by words and music. They have a complex relationship either by enhancing the sounds of words, by clarifying their meaning or by setting a learned construction to be understood by people used to the subtelties of latin rhythmic poetry. Rules and figures are dictated by the will to deliver a moral message, these techniques being derived from others practices of speech. The poet-composer conceives the conductus with the same habits as the ones of the orator and the singing voice is an efficient means of teaching a large and varied audience. Each song seems to fit is own purpose by the sounds of the language, by the structure patterns or by melodic creation. The sung word thus becomes a weapon against all sinners and vices

Résumé :
The great drama of China has been the repeated attempts to bring under single control and preserve the unity of its vast territories, so varied ethnically, socially, and geographically. Han Chinese confidence in the integrity of their own identity has been lastingly unsettled by long periods of fragmentation into regional states, and even in times of political unity the heart-searching has continued: what went wrong? What lessons could be learned for the future? The Southern and Northern Dynasties’ era (317-589 AD) was the longest period of political fragmentation in the imperial era. Its political and social confusion gave rise to differences in later accounts of it. In the eleventh century, scholar-officials intensively debated the issue of imperial rule during this period. At stake was the integrity of the Han Chinese state. On one side were historians who accorded legitimacy to the barbarian dynasties of the north; on the other were those who favoured the southern Han Chinese-ruled dynasties. By the time Song’s power base transferred south in 1127, a strong sense of a Han Chinese identity had developed and pro-Southern opinion predominated. This study approaches the Southern and Northern Dynasties’s era indirectly. It examines it through the most prominent work of eleventh-century historiography, the keystone written history of early imperial China, Sima Guang’s 司馬光 Zi zhi tong jian 資治通鑑 – the main focus of this study. That text has played a central role in shaping later understanding of imperial China’s political traditions and, as a corollary, has contributed to the formation of a Han Chinese self-identity. Yet Sima Guang’s representation of China’s past, though well-researched and written, was inevitably coloured by personal political and social experiences, and by his current commitments – by spin, in fact. This study will argue that at the heart of Sima Guang’s representation of the Southern and Northern Dynasties was a concern for the political survival of the eleventh-century state under which he served. He needed to understand and explicate the political and moral lessons of the earlier period in order to present an imperial vision that would avoid its frailties. This study therefore investigates and demonstrates the previously unexplored extent to which contemporary political concerns informed Sima Guang’s account. By developing a reading of Zi zhi tong jian as an ideological and textual construct, and more than just a simple account of the past, this study affords insights into the composition of historical writing in imperial China, as well as the complexities of the political environment that spawned it. It shows that works of historiography like Zi zhi tong jian served a more nuanced function than later scholarship suggests, and it brings into focus important questions of historical and literary authority.

Scott, Katy. « Behaviour and endocrinology of meerkats in zoos ». Thesis, University of Exeter, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/16393.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Zoo-based research is important both to inform management decisions on captive animals and because zoos, at their best, provide a naturalistic environment, which it is possible to manipulate, in which scientific research can be performed. Extending research to multiple zoos enables investigation into how variations between zoos impact their occupants. Comparing zoo animals to their wild conspecifics can inform management decisions, improve breeding and reintroduction programmes, educate the visiting public and allow assessment of the relevance of zoo-based research to the broader field. The impact of captivity on social animals is particularly interesting, as they cannot determine their own social environment. Meerkats (Suricata suricatta) are a highly social species of mongoose which have been extensively studied in the wild, and which are common in European zoos; they are therefore an ideal focal species with which to assess the impact of aspects of the zoo environment. This thesis presents a study of the behaviour, endocrinology and morphology of meerkats in ten zoos in the UK and one zoo in Germany. The size of captive meerkats' social groups was found to influence their behaviour and faecal glucocorticoid levels (fGCs), with animals in large groups exhibiting lower fGCs, which supports an optimum group size hypothesis. Meerkats in large groups also spent less time on sentry duty, although a sentry was posted more often in zoos than in the wild, reinforcing the model of state-dependent vigilance. Captive meerkats were found to weigh much more, on average, than their wild conspecifics, with 86.7% of adults more than two standard deviations heavier than the mean weight in the wild. Meerkats in larger enclosures were heavier than those in smaller ones; their weights also correlated with climate, with zoos in cool, dry locations having lighter meerkats. This research did not find that high levels of hormonal stress occur frequently in zoo meerkats, but obesity may pose a health threat to many individuals and its impacts should be a priority for veterinary research.

Résumé :
In light of its title, ""The Petting Zoo,""? many of the poems in this collection exist on the page as animals, domestic ones mostly like cats and dogs and birds. Animals that have been tamed and trained to eat out of bowl or Petri dish, shit in certain places, and animals that have grown accustomed to the habitual pet and good good bird affirmation of owner. Katy wanna cracker? To be looked at. To be fed. To be loved. These poems are personal. They are an attempt to articulate the desires of a speaker who is in a constant state of trying to understand the world and the obsessive concerns that decorate her life: think memory, think past, think brother, think sex, think nature, empathy, imagination, abortion, old dog, abortion, love, all of which show up time and time and again throughout the collection. Touch and to be touched, to be whole and yet to break. These poems, perhaps, approach what it means to be alive, and even more specific, what it means to be alive and working through the aftermath of the past and day-to-day that for the speaker often feels broken and incomplete.

Ecological, floristic, phytosociological and ethnobotanical studies of the swamp forest of Lokoli (Zogbodomey - Benin)

The swamp forest of Lokoli, located in the south of Benin, is a non-protected area, although it is the only swamp forest in West Africa accompanied by a river which always contains water. To be able to make decisions concerning the conservation and protection of this forest ecosystem, it is important to have a better knowledge of its flora, its vegetation and its ecology and dynamics. It is within this framework that the present study was considered. The data that were collected relate to the natural environment, the structure of the forest, the natural regeneration of the species and the uses of the Non Timber Forest Products (NTFP).

The natural environment is composed of a substratum which is acid (pH varying from 3.5 to 5.5) and loamy-sandy. The floristic composition of this forest is composed of 241 plant species from 185 genera and 70 families.

Seven vegetation types were identified: 1. Inundated primary forest with Alstonia congensis and Xylopia rubescens; 2. Inundated secondary forest with Ficus trichopoda and Spondianthus preussii; 3. Raphia forest with Raphia hookeri and Anthocleista vogelii; 4. Riparian forest with Alchornea cordifolia and Mitragyna inermis; 5. Marshy savanna with Ficus asperifolia and Paullinia pinnata; 6. Marshy savanna with Cyclosorus gongylodes and Polygonum pulchrum; and 7. Marshy savanna with Rhynchospora corymbosa and Ludwigia abyssinica. Precise details are given on their floristic, biological, phytogeographical and phytosociological characteristics. The mesophanerophytes are abundant in forest whereas at forest edges the microphanerophytes are most numerous. These vegetation types constitute a refuge for many animal species, for example Barboides britzi, a species of fish first identified in 2006. This study noted a good regeneration of forest species, in spite of disturbance related to the installation of fields of Colocasia esculenta.

About 75 investigated NTFP are exploited in Lokoli for many purposes, among which food, packaging, alcoholic drinks, medicines, construction, etc. Among the listed NTFP, the products and by-products made from Raphia hookeri are the most important because they are important sources of revenue for the inhabitants of the area. The number of stems of Raphia used per year for palm wine production is 15.452 by the 320 inhabitants, including 148 gatherers, 81 transformers and 91 tradesmen. This provides to the inhabitants an income of about 28,000 to 159,000 FCFA per month and per inhabitant, without forgetting the other activities undertaken by these inhabitants. This results in a strong human pressure on the vegetation of the area which is therefore in urgent need of protection.

The vegetation of the Lokoli forest has important values which indicate its conservation concern. It shelters plant and animal species that are endemic and/or endangered or vulnerable according to the red list of the IUCN, such as: Hallea ledermannii, Uapaca paludosa, Nauclea xanthoxylon, Cercopithecus erythrogaster erythrogaster, Cercopithecus mona, Colobus vellerosus, Ceriagrion citrinum Campion, Barboides britzi, etc. The swamp forest of Lokoli is a refuge for all these species who find here their ecological niche. On the socio-economic level, the Lokoli forest provides to the inhabitants an income for their subsistence. The Lokoli forest in southern Benin is a forest with a high conservation value and it has the potential to become a “biosphere reserve”.\

Farrand, Alexandra. « The effect of zoo visitors on the behaviour and welfare of zoo mammals ». Thesis, University of Stirling, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/300.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
There is evidence that the presence of the visiting public affects the behaviour of zoo-housed mammals. Understanding the effect of visitors is important in improving animal welfare, achieving zoo conservation goals, increasing visitor education/entertainment, and facilitating interpretation of data on zoo animal biology. A series of studies and experiments focusing on the effect of zoo visitors on captive mammal behaviour is presented. The influence of visitor density on a range of primates and large carnivores is examined. Methodological concerns regarding the operational definition of visitor density in the literature are expressed and a clarification of terms which may be helpful when comparing previous research is provided. Visitor noise data, using an objective measure of the variable, and its relationship to visitor density are also presented. External and internal visual barriers between visitors and zoo animals were hypothesised to moderate the visitor effect and enrich the environment of the study groups. Camouflage nets mounted on the outside of enclosure viewing windows had little impact on primate or felid behaviour, with the exception of the Sumatran orangutan group, who showed a trend toward decreased social play in the presence of the external barrier. Polar bear behaviour showed evidence of an enriched environment, with trends toward increased levels of swimming and decreased levels of resting. An internal visual barrier, which prevented visitors from having visual contact with the golden lion tamarins when the nonhuman primates were behind it, was also tested and elicited more extensive trends toward behavioural change than did the nets. Both Sumatran orangutans and zoo visitors were provided with a similar puzzle feeder in an effort to enrich the orangutan enclosure, and improve the visitor experience. It was hypothesised that the orangutans might be stimulated by watching visitors manipulate the device, but this did not occur. Orangutan use of the puzzle feeder within their enclosure was also unaffected. Olfactory stimuli were introduced into primate and felid enclosures and visitor viewing areas to investigate the role olfaction may play in the visitor effect. Although olfactory stimuli had an extensive significant effect on the behaviour of the study groups when it was introduced into the enclosure, there was little change when visitors were associated with the olfactory stimuli which suggest there may not be an olfactory visitor effect in primates or felids. The effect of visitors on petting zoo-housed mixed-breed goats, llama, and Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs was studied and compared to their behaviour without the presence of visitors. The goats were unaffected and the llama showed only a trend toward decreased levels of sitting in the presence of visitors. The Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs were significantly affected by the presence of visitors, exhibiting decreased inactivity and social behaviour. The hypothesis that a sustained absence of visitors would result in a more intense visitor effect was tested and was not supported by the data. An additional experiment investigating the effect of visitor grooming on the petting zoo study species showed that, while visitors spent more time interacting with the animals in the grooming condition, xiv the behaviour of the study animals indicated that they did not find visitor grooming rewarding. Data on the interaction between visitor density and the various experimental techniques tested here indicate that visitor density may impact animal response to environmental enrichment, supporting previous findings in the literature. In the presence of visual barriers, foraging devices, and olfactory stimuli, the relationship between animal behaviour and visitor density changed significantly, both qualitatively and quantitatively. These results suggest that collecting visitor density data when testing environmental enrichment techniques could be helpful when assessing their effectiveness, ultimately improving the welfare of zoo-housed mammals. Based on the data presented here, in conjunction with the literature, a closing discussion outlines proposed refinements to the visitor effect research guidelines published by the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (2005).

Résumé :
Bristol Zoo Gardens (opened in 1836) are a world in themselves: a fully enclosed site within an affluent neighbourhood, within a multifarious city, serving a large tourist hinterland, they offer a taste of the exotic, the domestic, the wild, and the civilised, all gathered together into one potentially conflictual environment. Since zoos as a leisure space have largely been neglected, this thesis provides a significant case study contributing to a number of overlapping fields: the socio-cultural histories of leisure and of the dissemination of science, local history, and the histories of childhood and gender. It investigates how people claimed ownership over and occupied the site, and how the site was depicted as a 'respectable' place. It assesses the differing experiences of this semi-public space by the working and middle classes, by women and men, and by children and adults, measured against the intentions of the founding shareholders, as implemented by the staff. The organisation's claim to provide rational recreation to locals and tourists was challenged by the financial imperative of covering costs, balancing education and entertainment, refined and popular culture to attract paying visitors. The surrounding neighbourhood has contributed to the Zoo's distinctively local character but has also been a source of tension regarding the character of the entertainment provided within the Gardens and the visitors attracted to them. All these stakeholders have divergent interests and different relationships to the organisation, but all have exhibited, to a greater or lesser degree, a sense of ownership over what was frequently referred to as 'our Clifton Zoo'. This thesis examines how the site's reputation for respectability was enhanced or challenged by these different actors, thereby assisting or threatening the survival of this provincial zoo.

Résumé :
The main aim of this diploma thesis is to analyse visitation of the zoological garden in Brno and to make recommendations which could result in higher values of visitation. The major causes of the fluctuation in visitation are found out and the econometric model is created. Due to this model, we can predict the future values of the reference indicator. In order to determine the interdependence between Zoo Brno attendance and the number of guests accommodated in the South Moravian Region, the econometrics model of South Moravia Region visitation was created too. Based on the analysis of external and internal environment, recommendations which could positively influence Zoo Brno attractiveness and number of its visitors are suggested. All used methods of analysis and creating model are presented in the theoretical part of this diploma thesis.

Résumé :
The assignment was to create a design of a tropical pavilion at the Brno Zoo. The most important aspect influencing the overall solution is the unique location of the existing pavilion, located at the top of the hill. In the wider area there is a forested landscape. There is an opportunity to build new exhibition spaces with regard to the future development of the zoo. So how to proceed with such assignment? The exhibition of the pavilion focuses on fauna and flora of the rainforest: Central America and the Amazon. The proposal envisages the demolition of the existing pavilion, which is currently unsuitable and obsolete. Part of the new pavilion is also the design of outdoor exposure areas. The main inspiration for the new pavilion was the Mayan Pyramid in the jungle. The outdoor expositions are inspired by the relief of the Amazonian landscape.

Bonde, de Queiroz M. « How does the zoo soundscape affect the zoo experience for animals and visitors ? » Thesis, University of Salford, 2018. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/48095/.

Résumé :
This project aims to evaluate the zoo soundscape from the animals and visitors perspective. A complete acoustic environment study in zoological parks should involve these two different, but equally important, characters. This thesis presents the results of the influence of the sound components of the zoo environment in the welfare and behaviour of mammals and in the visitors’ experience. Firstly, a critical literature review was made concerning the impact of noise on wildlife. Several papers were evaluated regarding some topics such as the target species, the sound source studied, and the methodology applied. The aim was to assess the reliability of the articles and to propose a guideline for future studies in this area. The results of the literature review have shown that only seven per cent of the published papers used suitable equipment and acoustic metrics to investigate the sound effect on wildlife and confirmed the importance of a complete and well-described methodology for studies replicability. The influence of sound on zoo mammals was explored by direct recordings of animal behaviour and sound measurements, and by the collection of faecal samples for glucocorticoid metabolites analysis in two zoos, Chester Zoo and Twycross Zoo. The results show that animals express some behavioural and hormonal responses to different environmental sound amplitudes. Therefore, zoos could use these findings for a better animal management and enclosures planning. The zoo soundscape perception by the public was investigated by the application of questionnaires with the soundwalk methodology around Chester Zoo. The objective of this part of the study is to understand how the zoo visitors perceive the environmental sound around the zoo and how different aspects of an area can influence the individual perception of the sound. The results show, among other important variables, that technological sounds can have a negative on the visitors’ perception and evaluation of the soundscape. For this reason, zoos should be more careful about the environmental sound of places with predominant technological sounds. In conclusion, for the animals, sound levels and the visitors can be a source of stress that causes variations in the expression of behaviour and in physiological stress levels. For the visitors, the influence of sound is caused mostly by the noise sources and less by the sound levels.

Résumé :
Zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been successfully used for the degradation of a wide range of organic contaminants in groundwaters in recent years. The rate of degradation of contaminants by ZVI may be enhanced by use of nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) particles which possess higher surface area than the more widely used granular materials. However, the most widely used method of producing nZVI involves the reduction of FeIII by sodium borohydride is expensive. Dithionite can be used to reduce Fe(II) and produce cost effective nZVI under conditions of high pH and in the absence of oxygen. The efficiency of trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation using dithionite nZVI particles (nZVIS2O4) is similar to that of the conventional borohydride particles (nZVIBH4). Oxidation of benzoic acid using the nZVIS2O4 particles results in different byproducts than those produced when nZVIBH4 particles are used. The high concentration of phenol compared to hydroxybenzoic acids suggests that OH addition is not the primary oxidation pathway when one is using the nZVIS2O4 particles. It is proposed that sulfate radicals (SO4−) are produced as a result of hydroxyl radical attack on the sulfite matrix surrounding the nZVIS2O4 particles, with these radicals oxidizing benzoic acid via electron transfer reactions rather than addition reactions. Low yields of oxidants limit the application of nZVI. It has recently been demonstrated that nZVI oxidative efficiency can be enhanced in presence of ethlylendiaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Additional insight into the nZVI-mediated process has been obtained from comparative studies of degradation of benzoic acid by nZVI particles and Fenton reagents in the absence and presence of EDTA at different pH. The efficiency of nZVI degradation is significantly hindered by the rapid aggregation of the iron nanoparticles, which may result in a decrease in available reactive surface area. These effects of aggregation can be overcome by surface modification through adsorption of capping agents which provide steric and electrosteric repulsive interactions between particles. Several high molecular weight (HMW) organic polymers have been used for preventing agglomeration of nZVI particles, such as water soluble starch, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and alginate. The degradation capabilities of different functionalized nZVIS2O4 particle were investigated. Iron-based bimetallic particles in which metals such as Pd and Ni have been combined with Fe, have been found to both enhance rates of halogenated organic contaminants reduction and generate more fully dehalogenated products relative to unamended iron. The results presented in this thesis demonstrate that formation of bimetallic particles with nZVI formed from the more cost effective dithionite reduction of ferrous salts also results in dramatic enhancement in reducing ability. The oxidising ability of nZVIBH4 particles can be enhanced dramatically by addition of polyoxometallates (POMs), redox catalysts which result in enhanced production of hydrogen peroxide. The extent of enhancement is quantified by examination of the oxidation of formic acid (to CO2) and kinetic modelling of the results obtained used to investigate the mechanism of the POM-mediated oxidation process.
