Abstract (sommario):
This research presented the kinetics of mullite formation in fly ash-bauxite reactants couples. Experiment on isothermal conversion of fly ash-bauxite at 1100°C, 1300°C, 1500°C has been carried out. XRD was used to quantitatively measure the content of mullite specimens sintered at different temperatures and times. The kinetics curve of conversion ratio versus time has been drawn. The results obtained showed that the full transformation of fly ash-bauxite to mullite takes place between 1300 °C and 1500 °C. The activation energy of secondary mullite formation is deduced to be 151 kJ/mol in the range of 1100-1500°C. The growth morphology parameter, n, is about 1.14 and 0.45 at 1100°C and 1500°C, respectively, indicating that bulk nucleation is dominant in mullite crystallization followed by three-dimensional growth of mullite crystal controlled by diffusion, but at 1500 °C diffusion process dominates mullite formation process.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examined whether serial cold-water immersions over a 10-h period would lead to fatigue of shivering and vasoconstriction. Eight men were immersed (2 h) in 20°C water three times (0700, 1100, and 1500) in 1 day (Repeat). This trial was compared with single immersions (Control) conducted at the same times of day. Before Repeat exposures at 1100 and 1500, rewarming was employed to standardize initial rectal temperature. The following observations were made in the Repeat relative to the Control trial: 1) rectal temperature was lower and heat debt was higher ( P < 0.05) at 1100; 2) metabolic heat production was lower ( P < 0.05) at 1100 and 1500; 3) subjects perceived the Repeat trial as warmer at 1100. These data suggest that repeated cold exposures may impair the ability to maintain normal body temperature because of a blunting of metabolic heat production, perhaps reflecting a fatigue mechanism. An alternative explanation is that shivering habituation develops rapidly during serially repeated cold exposures.

Abstract (sommario):
Paleolimnological and archaeological records that span 3500 years from Lake Titicaca and the surrounding Bolivian–Peruvian altiplano demonstrate that the emergence of agriculture (ca. 1500 B.C.) and the collapse of the Tiwanaku civilization (ca. A.D. 1100) coincided with periods of abrupt, profound climate change. The timing and magnitude of climate changes are inferred from stratigraphic evidence of lake-level variation recorded in14C-dated lake-sediment cores. Paleo-lake levels provide estimates of drainage basin water balance. Archaeological evidence establishes spatial and temporal patterns of agricultural field use and abandonment. Prior to 1500 B.C., aridity in the altiplano precluded intensive agriculture. During a wetter period from 1500 B.C. to A.D. 1100, the Tiwanaku civilization and its immediate predecessors developed specialized agricultural methods that stimulated population growth and sustained large human settlements. A prolonged drier period (ca. A.D. 1100–1400) caused declining agricultural production, field abandonment, and cultural collapse.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose:To provide insight on the development of pacing behavior in junior speed skaters and analyze possible differences between elite, subelite, and nonelite juniors. Methods:Season-best times (SBTs) in the 1500-m and corresponding pacing behavior were obtained longitudinally for 104 Dutch male speed skaters at age 13–14 (U15), 15–16 (U17), and 17–18 (U19) y. Based on their U19 SBT, skaters were divided into elite (n = 17), subelite (n = 64), and nonelite (n = 23) groups. Pacing behavior was analyzed using the 0- to 300-m, 300- to 700-m, 700- to 1100-m, and 1100- to 1500-m times, expressed as a percentage of final time. Mixed analyses of variance were used for statistical analyses. Results:With age, pacing behavior generally developed toward a slower 0- to 300-m and 1100- to 1500-m and a faster midsection relative to final time. While being faster on all sections, the elite were relatively slower on 0- to 300-m (22.1% ± 0.27%) than the subelite and nonelite (21.5% ± 0.44%) (P < .01) but relatively faster on 300- to 700-m (24.6% ± 0.30%) than the nonelite (24.9% ± 0.58%) (P = .002). On 700- to 1100-m, the elite and subelite (26.2% ± 0.25%) were relatively faster than the nonelite (26.5% ± 0.41%) (P = .008). Differences in the development of pacing behavior were found from U17 to U19, with relative 700- to 1100-m times decreasing for the elite and subelite (26.2% ± 0.31% to 26.1% ± 0.27%) but increasing for the nonelite (26.3% ± 0.29% to 26.5% ± 0.41%) (P = .014). Conclusions:Maintaining high speed into 700 to 1100 m, accompanied by a relatively slower start, appears crucial for high performance in 1500-m speed skating. Generally, juniors develop toward this profile, with a more pronounced development toward a relatively faster 700- to 1100-m from U17 to U19 for elite junior speed skaters. The results of the current study indicate the relevance of pacing behavior for talent development.

Abstract (sommario):
Iron and silicon nitride powders were mixed in a certain proportion and compacted, then Fepure-Si3N4 were prepared by heating the samples in reducing atmosphere at 1100°C, 1300°C and 1500 °C, respectively. The stability of Fepure-Si3N4 prepared at different temperatures was analyzed by XRD diffraction and theoretical thermodynamics calculation. Results show that the main components of Fepure-Si3N4 at high temperatures in reducing atmosphere are Si3N4 and Si2N2O; Iron exists in Fepure-Si3N4 at 1100°C, and iron had largely converted to Fe3Si phase at 1300°C and 1500°C, which is in accordance with the result of thermodynamic theoretical calculation.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents a short overview of the history of the English language and its expansion through borrowing of words from other languages. The borrowed words are referred to as ‘loanwords’. Unlike any other language, English vocabulary consists of 70% ‘loan words’. The history of English and thus ‘borrowing’ is divided into four periods: Old English Period (500-1100), Middle English Period (1100-1500), Early Modern English Period (1500-1800) and Late Modern English Period (1800-present). Each of the four periods is discussed in terms of the influential languages that dominated these periods and their contribution to the development of the English language.

Abstract (sommario):
All languages change over time. English has undergone continuous change throughout its three major periods: Old English (roughly from 450 to 1100 AD), Middle English (from 1100 to 1500), and Modern English (from 1500 to the present). Sound is one of the most easily influenced parts of language to be subject to different changes. Sound change is inevitable and it is a live indication of the continuous growth of language. The evidence to prove the regularity and systematicity of sound change has been the main concern of linguists, This paper seeks to provide more evidence on how vowel harmony played a key role on the regularity of sound change by extracting samples of sound changes that have taken place throughout the English history.

Abstract (sommario):
Solar-reflective yellow pigment was synthesized by a solid-state reaction of the Sm2O3 and CeO2 in the presence of the (NH4)6Mo7O24 employed for the Mo doping. The raw materials were wet milled in acetone for 6 h to acheive a homogeneous slurry followed by calcination at 1100, 1300 and 1500 °C for 6 h. The effect of the Mo doping was investigated by adding 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 wt.% (NH4)6Mo7O24. XRD analysis of the undoped product revealed the formation of Sm2Ce2O7 at 1300 °C along with the unreacted Sm2O3 and CeO2, and revealed the completed reaction at 1500 °C. The addition of (NH4)6Mo7O24 resulted in the formation of Sm2Ce2-xMoxO7+δ, where x = 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 and 0.05 depending on the amount of the Mo dopant employed. The doping also significantly affected the product’s color; it turned from ivory white to yellow with the increase of dopant content up to 20 wt.% and became dark green afterward. Increasing firing temperature from 1100 to 1500 °C led to brighter yellow due to the substitution of Mo6+ for Ce4+. At the optimum synthesis condition, i.e. 20 wt.% doping and 1500 °C firing temperature, the product was most yellowish and had 69.2 % near-infrared reflectance.

Abstract (sommario):
Yb2O3-Gd2O3-Y2O3 co-doped ZrO2 (YGYZ) is considered to be a promising material in thermal barrier coating (TBC) applications. In this study, 2Yb2O3-2Gd2O3-6Y2O3-90ZrO2 (mol.%) (10YGYZ) feedstock candidates for air plasma spraying (APS) were prepared by calcination of agglomerated powders at 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, and 1500 °C for 3 h, respectively. Incomplete solid solution was observed in calcined powders at 1100, 1200 and 1300 °C, and the 1500 °C calcined powder exhibited poor flowability due to intense sintering effect. The 1400 °C calcined powders were eventually determined to be the optimized feedstock for proper phase structure (cubic phase), great flowability, suitable apparent density and particle size distribution, etc. 10YGYZ TBCs with the optimized feedstock were prepared by APS, exhibiting pure c phase and good chemical uniformity. Controllable preparation of coatings with different porosity (i.e., 7%–9% and 12%–14%) was realized by stand-off distance adjustment.

Abstract (sommario):
Electrical conductivity plays an important role in the performance of thermoelectric semiconductor material. This study discusses the electrical conductivity measurements of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) doping Aluminium (Al) pellet as a material of thermoelectric using four-point probe method at high temperatures. Al-doped ZnO (2 wt%) pellet was sintered at the temperature of 1100°C, 1200°C, 1300°C, 1400°C, and 1500°C with the heating rate of 8°C/minute. SEM and XRD tests show that the higher sintering temperature effects to larger grain sizes, better crystallinity, and lower porosity. There is no electrical conductivity in the sintering sample at 1100°C due to the small grain sizes and high porosity. In the sintering sample at 1500°C, the phase of ZnAl2O4erupted. The highest electrical conductivity of 5923.48S/m of Al-doped ZnO pellet was obtained at the sintering temperature of 1400°C with measurement temperature of 500°C.

Abstract (sommario):
A new ultraviolet (UV) Raman spectroscopic system to measure the Raman scattering from materials at high temperatures up to 1500 °C has been designed. This system is based on a CW (continuous-wave) ultraviolet argon-ion laser (363.8 nm), a spatial filter, a single monochromator coupled to a double-grating rejection filter, and a two-dimensional charge-coupled device (CCD) detector. The plasma lines from the laser are almost completely rejected by a Pellin—Broca prism combined with apertures. In situ Raman measurements for a zirconia (ZrO2) specimen at various high temperatures have been performed by using the UV excitation as well as the conventional visible 488.0-nm excitation for comparison. In the case of visible excitation, thermal emission obstructs the observation of the Raman scattering from zirconia even at 900 °C; it becomes rapidly pronounced between 900 and 1100 °C, and finally it is impossible to observe Raman spectra at temperatures higher than 1200 °C. In sharp contrast to the visible excitation, the UV excitation provides good-quality Raman spectra with practically flat backgrounds for the Raman signal of tetragonal zirconia in the spectral region of 20–1100 cm−1 even at 1500 °C, and it enables clear observation of the monoclinic-tetragonal phase transformation of zirconia occurring between 1100 and 1200 °C.

Experiments were conducted from 1997 to 2000 in Ames and Nashua, IA, to quantify the effects of incident radiation, sun angle, leaf wetness, and sensor height on the quality and quantity of sunlight reflected from alfalfa canopies using a hand-held, multispectral radiometer. Incident radiation had negligible effects on the percentage of sunlight reflected from alfalfa canopies in the visible wavelength bands (460 to 710 nm) and significant negative effects on the percentage of sunlight reflected from alfalfa canopies in the near-infrared wavelength bands (760 and 810 nm). Percentage reflectance values (810 nm) decreased between 0.20 and 0.32% for each 100 watts m-2 increase in incident radiation. Percentage reflectance values in all wavelength bands obtained prior to 1100 h and after 1500 h CST were significantly higher than reflectance measurements obtained between 1100 h and 1500 h. The presence of moisture on leaves (leaf wetness) significantly increased percentage reflectance for all wavelength bands. Sensor height had variable effects on percentage reflectance in all wavelength bands. This variability was most likely due to changes in the heterogeneity of alfalfa canopies with increasing sensor height. In experiments conducted with more homogenous canopies (oat and turfgrass), sensor height had no significant effect on the percentage of sunlight reflected from these canopies. To minimize the effects of all of the above nondisease factors on the measurement of percentage of sunlight reflected from crop canopies, we recommend that percentage reflectance measurements be obtained between 1100 and 1500 h when plant canopies are dry, with a constant sensor height (sampling unit area), and within a small range of incident radiation for all measurements.

Abstract (sommario):
Lanthania (La2O3) and zirconia (ZrO2) powders in ethanol based suspension were mechanochemically treated in a planetary ball mill for 12 hours at 200 rpm, dried and sintered at various temperatures from 400 to 1500. Particles in nanometer sizes are produced after milling. X-ray diffractometry results show the formation of single phase lanthanum zirconate on subsequent heat treatment for 1h at 1500. Phase evolution based on the intensities of the XRD plots and BET surface area analysis indicates three stages of crystallization: below 800, between 800 and ~1100, and above 1100 where reflections of La2Zr2O7 with pyrochlore structure are increased with further heating. Only endothermic energy peaks are observed in the differential thermal analysis (DTA) curve of the milled powders, which could be attributed to the reactions involving dehydroxylation, decarboxylation and complete disintegration of ethanol. This indicates that probably, lanthanum zirconate has grown on sintering at high temperatures from the very fine particles produced by mechanochemical activation during milling. Thermogravimetric analysis has recorded a total weight loss of ~9% from the original weight of the milled powder on sintering at 1500. The values of the surface area of the powders are found to decrease while the crystallite size of La2Zr2O7 are increased with increasing temperature.

Abstract (sommario):
Isothermal sections at 1100 and 1500 °C were determined by X-ray powder diffraction method to reveal stable phases and chemical pathways in the Co–Si–C system. There is no ternary compound present in either isothermal. Cobalt silicides are formed in the Co-rich region at temperatures lower than those in the Si-rich region. CoSi2 reacts with carbon to form CoSi and SiC at 1500 °C, and Co2Si and CoSi are more stable in equilibrium with carbon. The results are also discussed in terms of thermodynamics and binding energy of the reacting substances.

Abstract (sommario):
New light super-heat-resistant powder Ni3Al and NiAl-based alloys (of the Ni-Al-Mo-B, Ni-Al-Fe-La, and Ni-Al-Y2O3 systems), as well as a new technology for preparing and processing them have been developed. The density of the alloys was 7.3-7.5 and ~6 g/cm 3, respectively. The Ni3Al sheets were used to prepare shields for combustion chambers in gas-turbine engines by roomtemperature deformation; the shields are intended for the long-term operation at 1100-1200°C and for the short-term use at 1300°C. The activated NiAl powders alloyed with Fe+La were used to produce sintered complex-shape articles, such as combustion stabilizers in a jet unit of combustion chamber of the gas-turbine installation, heat sources, etc. capable of operating at t≤1500°C under low mechanical stresses. At 1100, 1300, and 1500°C, the 100-h strength of the heat-resistant NiAl- (2-7.5) vol. % Y2O3 alloys subjected to directional recrystallization is 70, 35 and ≥10 MPa, respectively. The vanes, in which the length of recrystallized grain is smaller than the vane length by a factor of 1.5-2, were manufactured from these alloys.
