Abstract (sommario):
The article focuses on Mate Zorić’s scientific production dedicated to Manzoni and to the reception of The Betrothed among Croatian writers and readership. His critical interest is due to Manzoni’s close ties to Marko Kažotić and Niccolò Tommaseo, writers amply studied by Zorić since the 1950s. A third reason of his critical interest, discussed in this article, is Manzoni’s popularity among the Croatian readership through the translations of his works. The merit of Zorić is not only that of having identified the first attempt at translating Manzoni’s masterpiece in the archives of the National and University Library in Zagreb, but also of having applied the results of the studies of Croatian and Comparative Literature to the studied material. Attributing (along with the literary critic Emil Štampar) the translation published in 1875-1876 to the Croatian writer and translator Josip Eugen Tomić, Zorić also illustrates “the echoes of Manzoni” in the formation and flourishing of the Croatian historical novel. Mate Zorić’s work continues to stimulate further research on the subject from the perspectives of Comparative Literature and Translation Studies.

La presente tesi di dottorato è il primo studio complessivo sui rapporti di Alessandro Manzoni con la cultura anglosassone, considerati nelle due direzioni: da una parte, le possibili influenze della letteratura inglese sulle sue opere, dall’altra la fortuna dell’autore in Gran Bretagna e negli Stati Uniti nell’Ottocento. Manzoni, infatti, non fu complessivamente incompreso o ignorato nei paesi anglosassoni, come ritenevano alcuni studiosi. Al contrario: personaggi importanti del mondo letterario e culturale apprezzavano e citavano le sue opere, e le numerose traduzioni, recensioni, antologie e libri sull’Italia testimoniano che questo autore era noto tra il pubblico colto. Tra gli episodi più importanti della fortuna di Manzoni nell’Inghilterra vittoriana si possono ricordare: due recensioni di Mary Shelley, influenzata dalla prospettiva risorgimentale (che era in realtà ambivalente verso Manzoni); e un romanzo della scrittrice Charlotte Yonge, legata al movimento di Oxford, che apprezzava particolarmente "I promessi sposi" per i valori cristiani. Negli Stati Uniti, i pregi del romanzo erano riconosciuti da intellettuali attenti alla cultura italiana contemporanea, come Emerson e Margaret Fuller.
This dissertation is the first overall study on Alessandro Manzoni’s relationship with the English-speaking world, considered along both lines: possible influences from English literature on Manzoni’s works, and Manzoni’s reception in Great Britain and the United States in the XIXth century. Manzoni was not ignored or misunderstood in those countries, as some critics believed. On the contrary, distinguished men and women from the literary and cultural world read, liked and quoted his works. Indeed, the great number of translations, reviews, anthologies and books on Italy dealing with Manzoni testifies that the Italian author was well-known among the educated reading public. Two important episodes of Manzoni’s reception in Victorian England can be mentioned: two reviews by Mary Shelley, who was influenced by the issues of the Italian Risorgimento (not totally sympathetic with Manzoni); a novel by Charlotte Yonge, the novelist of the Oxford movement, who admired Manzoni’s "Promessi sposi" for its Christian values. In the United States, the merits of Manzoni’s work were acknowledged by Emerson and Margaret Fuller, who showed interest and consideration for the contemporary Italian culture.

Lo studio dimostra come l’influenza di Antonio Rosmini abbia portato Alessandro Manzoni ad una profonda conoscenza della metafisica dell’800. A partire dal Carteggio fra i due studiosi, si evince che il senso profondo del “fare filosofia” è di tipo ermeneutico. Nella prima parte, si tratteggia l’intenso rapporto di amicizia che li accompagna per tutta la loro vita, fino alla composizione da parte di Alessandro Manzoni del Dialogo dell’invenzione, nel quale si nota la profonda devozione filosofica al Roveretano, maestro spirituale di Manzoni. Nella seconda parte, l’attenzione si concentra sulla Teosofia, e particolarmente nel IV libro, nel quale Rosmini sviscera la nozione di idea, tema anche del Dialogo. La parte terza si occupa invece dei sistemi fallaci, che hanno ecceduto o sottovalutato la questione metafisica, per passare poi nella quarta ed ultima parte alla considerazione dell’utilità e della giustizia, temi importantissimi per entrambi i grandi letterati.

Il lavoro nasce come prosecuzione del saggio del Professor Langella "Manzoni poeta teologo". Consta di tre parti: una iniziale rassegna critica fa quasi da pretesto per trovare assetto e convergenza metodologica. Il secondo capitolo ripercorre due grandi questioni biografiche manzoniane (conversione e giansenismo). Il terzo capitolo, eminentemente stilistico, contiene anche una riflessione sul valore della similitudine in Manzoni. Schedate in appendice tutte le similitudini del "Fermo e Lucia" e dei "Promessi Sposi".
Dr. Raffaella’s Battaglini’s work was born as an ideal completion of Professor Langella's essay "Manzoni poeta teologo". The present essay is evidently threefold: the critical review at the beginning functions almost as a way - we might even say a pretext – to find the right methodological approach for the entire work. The biographical overview is focused on the knots of Manzoni’s conversion on one hand, and of his Jansenism on the other. A sort of status quaestionis of Manzoni’s Jansenism is presented in the Second Chapter. The final stylistic analysis – which was initially supposed to appear at the beginning of the essay – has undoubtedly great qualities and reveals Dr. Raffaella Battaglini’s talent. The monographic study of the simile summarizes and revives many of the remarks (Trompeo, Petrocchi, Cerisola, Raimondi can be quoted among others) that the critical corpus about Manzoni has often pointed out but not always fully developped. The approach to the text is easy without being ingenuous, the remarks are always thoughtful, the prose is fluent and lively. The final appendix about simile, patiently composed, happily fulfills a literary whole contemplari et aliis contemplata tradere.

La ricerca ha approfondito il rapporto esistente tra l’ambito della parola e quello del pensiero in Alessandro Manzoni. Essa è stata articolata in due versanti: uno prevalentemente teorico denominato la parola nel pensiero dove è chiarita la Weltanschauung manzoniana sul tema in questione, l’altro sostanzialmente pratico, il pensiero nella parola, concernente l’analisi testuale delle opere letterarie e filosofiche di Manzoni. Per il primo versante, fatta luce sulla consistenza delle riflessioni filosofiche manzoniane, sui contenuti essenziali del suo pensiero e, in essi, sull’importante ruolo assunto dalla riflessione linguistica, si sono indagati gli intimi meandri speculativi inerenti il linguaggio e la parola. Per il secondo versante ci si è fatti guidare dalla riflessione manzoniana che «la parola offre intuiti al pensiero» ed «estende la cognizione» per analizzare i testi letterari non come semplici ‘concretizzazioni’ di idee precedenti, ma come ‘fucine di pensiero’. È interessante notare come le pagine letterarie, offrendo «intuiti al pensiero», precedano e incarnino quelle filosofiche e come al contempo, alla luce delle speculazioni filosofiche, le pagine letterarie acquistino maggiore profondità, in un innovativo rapporto di circolo ermeneutico, che vede nella parola letteraria ‘rivelativa’ un momento fondamentale del processo creativo e conoscitivo del Manzoni, aprendo così la strada ad ulteriori studi.
The research is an in-depth study about the relationship between word and thought in Alessandro Manzoni. It has been structured in two different parts: the first part, mainly theoretic, called la parola nel pensiero, where is clearly defined Manzoni’s Weltanschauung about this theme, the second part, basically practical, called il pensiero nella parola, concerning the textual analysis of the literary and the philosophical works by Manzoni. On the one side, after clarifying the foundation of the philosophical reflections by Manzoni, the essential contents of his thought and the important role of the linguistic thinking inside them, the last deep speculative aspects related to the language and the word have been investigated. On the other side, Manzoni’s reflection “la parola offre intuiti al pensiero” and “estende la cognizione” has been the starting point to review the literary works not only like simple forms of previous ideas but also like a breeding ground for thought. It’s interesting to notice that the literary pages offering “intuiti al pensiero”, come before and exemplify the philosophical ones and at the same time, thanks to the philosophical speculations, they gain depth inside an innovative hermeneutic circle which considers the literary word “rivelativa” a fundamental moment of the creative and cognitive process by Manzoni, opening the way for further studies.

Esta dissertação discute a teorização e a prática do romance histórico oitocentista por Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873), tanto em sua produção ensaística (em especial Del romanzo storico, de 1850) quanto naquela literária em I promessi sposi [Os noivos] (1842). Para isto, discuto a compreensão contemporânea de “romance histórico” a partir dos entendimentos correntes quanto aos gêneros literários, buscando uma solução na defesa do romance histórico como uma manifestação artística, geográfica e temporalmente particular de um modo narrativo sempre existente e necessário, que busca conciliar o discurso percebido como histórico (de uma verdade correspondente à realidade) com aquele percebido como ficcional (de uma verdade coerente à expectativa do universo literário narrado); a conhecida crise deste gênero é assim analisada pela sua relação com os debates contemporâneos sobre a historiografia, os quais, por sua vez, dificultam uma clara separação entre histórico e ficcional. O romance de Manzoni é deste modo inserido no jogo de forças entre compromissos históricos e ficcionais que, neste entender, marcou sua prática artística desde a juventude, culminando na obra aqui analisada: esta serviu-lhe ao mesmo tempo de laboratório para este gênero então novo e de veículo para a expressão irônica, fruto de uma rígida ética ao mesmo tempo iluminista e cristã que lhe era peculiar, desta capacidade de conciliar história e ficção
This dissertation discusses the theory and practice of the historical novel of the eighteenth century by Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873), both in his essays (in particular Del romanzo storico, 1850) and his novel I promessi sposi [The Betrothed] (1842). Thus, I discuss the contemporary understanding of “historical novel” by the current debates about literary genres, aiming for a solution with the defense of the historical novel as a manifestation, artistically, geographically and temporally particular, of a narrative mode which always existed and has always been necessary, one that aims to conciliate a discourse perceived as historical (related to a truth that corresponds to reality) with one that is perceived as fictional (related to a truth that is consistent with the expectations of the literary universe it narrates); the mu-publicized crisis of this genre is thus considered by its relation to contemporary debates regarding historiography, which, in turn, hinder a clear distinction between history and the fiction. In this sense, Manzoni’s novel is taken as a subject of the struggle between historical and fictional requirements which, according to my view, marked his artistic efforts since his youth, culminating in the novel in exam: it would have served him at the same time as laboratory for this literary genre, at that time new, and as a vehicle for expressing ironically, as a result of his peculiar Enlightenment and Christian ethics, its supposed ability of combining history and fiction

A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo principal organizar a recepção do romance I Promessi Sposi (Os Noivos), de autoria de Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873), no Brasil. A narrativa tem como protagonistas os jovens Renzo e Lucia que enfrentam as maiores dificuldades de seu tempo (a carestia, a fome, o domínio estrangeiro, as guerras e a peste no norte da Itália durante o século XVII) para realizar seu matrimonio e é uma das obras-primas da literatura italiana e mundial. Este trabalho estuda as maneiras pelas quais o romance manzoniano aporta em terras brasileiras, é acolhido e permanece como argumento de debates críticos, desde o primeiro registro encontrado por esta investigação até o ano de 2012, data da publicação da última tradução brasileira. Neste sentido, estudaram-se as diversas traduções, edições e adaptações publicadas deste romance no Brasil, atentando seja para a forma como se dá o transporte do texto original italiano para a língua portuguesa, seja para as questões relacionadas ao paratexto, isto é, o cuidado editorial empregado nesses textos. Organizou-se a também a recepção da crítica brasileira a I Promessi Sposi que se deu em forma de livros, capítulos, artigos em jornais, revistas e periódicos científicos, verbetes de enciclopédias e nos Boletins do Instituto Brasileiro Estudos Manzonianos. Da coleta e análise desse material buscou-se traçar o perfil que a recepção a I Promessi Sposi conferiu a Manzoni e sua obra-prima no Brasil.
The present research has as the main objective of organizing the reception of the novel The Betrothed, from Alessandro Manzonis authorship (1785-1873), in Brazil. The narrative presents as protagonists the young Renzo and Lucia who encounter the greatest difficulties of their time (inflation, hunger, the foreigner domination, the wars and the plague in the north of Italy during the XVII century) to make their wedding happen and it is one of the masterpieces of the world and Italian Literature. This thesis studies the manners by which the Manzonian novel arrives in Brazilian lands, is accepted and remains as argument of critic debates, since the first record found by this investigation until the year 2012, the publishing date of the last Brazilian translation. In this sense, diverse translations, editions and adaptations published of this novel in Brazil were studied, noticing the way the original Italian text was transferred into the Portuguese language, and the issue related to the paratext, namely, the editorial care used in these texts. The Brazilian critic reception of the Betrothed that happened in book form, chapters, newspaper articles, magazines and scientific journals, encyclopedia entries and the newsletters of the Manzonian Studies Brazilian Institute were also organized. From the gathering and analysis of these materials we searched to outline the profile that the reception of The Betrothed granted Manzoni and his masterpiece in Brazil.

En accusant le théâtre de familiariser les consciences avec le « langage des passions », Pierre Nicolelançait une condamnation à laquelle Manzoni a pensé pendant longtemps. Le thème de la moralitélittéraire offre un point de vue intéressant sur le rapport dynamique – et largement inexploré – deManzoni à l’égard des auteurs reconnus de philosophie morale du XVIIe siècle français. En fortesyntonie avec ces derniers sur des contenus étiques et religieux, et des questions de méthode et delangue, Manzoni mena une analyse passionnée du statut moral des lettres, dans un dialogue directavec des censeurs qu’on n’avait jamais démenti. Cette étude porte donc à démontrer que sa réponse,esquissée dans un discours critique inachevé, arriva par le biais même de son oeuvre, par laquelle ilproposait une façon de représenter les passions comme une noble fonction cognitive, avec unvocabulaire qui se réfère largement au lexique des orateurs mêmes, dont les sermons conservés danssa bibliothèque montrent d’importants signes de lecture. Cette étude, qui commence avec unevérification documentaire, est structurée en deux parties. La première se compose d’un chapitre dédiéaux positions sur la moralité de la littérature entre le XVIIe et le XIXe siècle, suivi de trois autres oùnous analysons le langage manzonien des passions par mots clés (l’orgueil, l’amour-passion et lacolère), orientés par les traités du XVIIe siècle, les tragédies de Corneille, Racine et Shakespearecommentées par Manzoni, ainsi que les textes du dramaturge et romancier. By accusing the theatre of teaching the dangerous «language of passions», Pierre Nicole gave ajudgment of which Manzoni would have thought for a long time. The subject of literary moralityoffers an interesting view of Manzoni’s relationship – dynamic and largely unexplored – with thebeloved authors of the French 17th century moral philosophy. Being in strong syntony with them inethical and religious issues, as well as in questions of method and language, Manzoni carried out apassionate analysis on the role of literature, in a direct dialogue with censors, who, according to him,hadn’t received a convincing answer to that point of time. This study shows that Manzoni’s response,outlined in an unfinished speech, proposed a concrete way of representing passions, not as futile andtoxic divertissement, but with a noble cognitive function. We attempt to show that Manzoni’slanguage owes much to the moralists themselves, «deep and keen observers of the human heart»,whose sermons, stored on the shelves of Manzoni’s library, contain various signs of reading.Concieved as a philological and documentary analysis of these texts, the thesis is structured in twoparts. The first one consist of a chapter that deals with the 17th-19th centuries positions on literarymorality, and other three chapters which are dedicated to Manzoni’s vocabulary of pride, love-passionand anger. This analysis takes into account the 17th century moral treaties, the tragedies of Corneille,Racine and Shakespeare, all commented by Manzoni, and Manzoni’s playwright and novelist’sproduction. The second part consists of an essay dealing with a Manzonian lexicon of the words ofthe moral life
