Abstract (sommario):
The article focuses on Mate Zorić’s scientific production dedicated to Manzoni and to the reception of The Betrothed among Croatian writers and readership. His critical interest is due to Manzoni’s close ties to Marko Kažotić and Niccolò Tommaseo, writers amply studied by Zorić since the 1950s. A third reason of his critical interest, discussed in this article, is Manzoni’s popularity among the Croatian readership through the translations of his works. The merit of Zorić is not only that of having identified the first attempt at translating Manzoni’s masterpiece in the archives of the National and University Library in Zagreb, but also of having applied the results of the studies of Croatian and Comparative Literature to the studied material. Attributing (along with the literary critic Emil Štampar) the translation published in 1875-1876 to the Croatian writer and translator Josip Eugen Tomić, Zorić also illustrates “the echoes of Manzoni” in the formation and flourishing of the Croatian historical novel. Mate Zorić’s work continues to stimulate further research on the subject from the perspectives of Comparative Literature and Translation Studies.

Abstract (sommario):
It was a foreign critic, ironically, who grasped the insurmountable national challenge that alessandro Manzoni posed to himself and to Italy's future authors with his monumental novel I promessi sposi (The Betrothed [1827, rev. ed. 1840]). Manzoni's basic theme, Georg Lukács writes, is “much less a given, concrete, historical crisis of national history” than it is “the tragedy of the Italian people as a whole” (70). This eternal plight—distilled into the story of the courtship and separation of two peasants in seventeenth-century Lombardy during plague, riots, and Spanish occupation—encompassed Italy's perpetual struggle against foreign rule, its lack of a unifying language and polity, and its reticent modernity, especially its tensions between religious tradition and secular progress. According to Lukács, the universality of the text combined with the abiding, unchanging nature of the problems it fictionalized essentially exhausted the genre of the historical novel that it introduced to Italy. Posterity has vindicated this assessment. Manzoni abandoned the genre soon after I promessi sposi to dedicate himself to historical writing proper, and his novel remains ensconced in the Italian public imaginary, just behind Dante's Commedia, as the towering, mythic work that helped occasion Italy's belated unification in 1861.

Abstract (sommario):
In the early 19th century, the Italian literature did not have a mature novel, as is known today. The Italian novelist, Manzoni, and his masterpiece The Betrothed, set a solid basis for the contemporary Italian novel; thanks to its’ narrative characteristics that helped the novelist in achieving different reformative goals, woven stupendously with fictional, historical and realistic threads. The main purpose of this study is to apply an analytical and thematic approach on the structure and narrator of the novel. Furthermore, the research aims to distinguish the main artistic characteristics adopted from the European historical novel. The study then focuses on analyzing the function of the anonymous author’s fictional frame and how it created a diversity in the narrative levels. The research also highlights the importance of the omniscient narrator, the strong relations between the narrator and the narratee, the different narrative perspectives, and finally the polyphony: techniques that enhanced the realistic dimension of the novel.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACTThis article addresses the early Italian reception of Verdi's Messa da Requiem (1874), premièred in Milan on the first anniversary of the death of the novelist Alessandro Manzoni. Previous literature has focused on issues of musical genre and the work's political implications (particularly its connections with Manzoni and with late nineteenth-century Italian revivals of ‘old’ sacred music). The article examines, instead, the curiously pluralistic concerns of contemporary critics, as well as certain aspects of Verdi's vocal writing, with the aim of destabilizing traditional dichotomies such as old/new, sacred/operatic, vocal/instrumental and progress/crisis. It argues for more broad-ranging political resonances of Verdi's work, suggesting that the negotiation of a variety of boundaries both in Verdi's music and in its contemporary discussion made the Requiem dovetail with wider cultural attempts to define Italian identity.

Abstract (sommario):
In 1823, Alessandro Manzoni engaged a continuing debate over the merits of ‘Aristotelian’ unities of time and place with his Lettre à M. C*** sur l'unité de temps et de lieu dans la tragédie, a manifesto that synthesises and amplifies earlier polemics by Berchet, Pellico and Visconti. Dramatic expression, coherence and realism, Manzoni argued, are best served by giving priority to unity of action while ignoring the traditional restrictions of time and setting. Although discontinuities might occur between adjacent scenes, the focus on cause and effect and the exclusion of unrelated incidents would provide a coherence that had previously depended on physical and temporal proximity. Manzoni suggested that formal preconceptions be set aside and the action allowed to shape dramatic design. Characters could be introduced throughout a play rather than together in the first act, their motivations and goals allowed to evolve as the situation unfolds. These shifts would encourage writers to cultivate motifs other than love intrigues, which had traditionally held sway because they took little time to develop. In particular, historical plays could enact all important events instead of only the climax, and depict true causes and resolutions rather than ones invented to fit conventional constraints.

Abstract (sommario):
‘La sventurata rispose’ [the poor wretch answered]. This sentence, among the most famous of Italian literature, appears in chapter 10 of Alessandro Manzoni's I promessi sposi (The Betrothed, first published in 1827 and revised in 1840), where it functions as stitches trying to heal the deep wound caused by a radical surgical intervention, the excision of pages and pages devoted to a description of seduction. In the best Gothic tradition, the first version of the novel, entitled Fermo e Lucia (1821–23), contained a long account of the seduction of the Nun of Monza by a young libertine, but religious and, apparently, aesthetic considerations convinced Manzoni to cut this episode and replace it with those three words. The rhetorical figure of reticence, so prominent in chapter 10 of I promessi sposi, dominates the tradition of Italian ‘high’ Classicist and Romantic literature, which seems to have considered seduction unfit as a literary theme, to be left to the gutter of the popular novel.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This article analyzes the problem of referentiality in the historical novel, based on a comparison between its classic and contemporary forms. The first section addresses the “mixture of history and invention” that, following Alessandro Manzoni, was the foremost characteristic of the realist historical novel. The next section discusses how the meta-historical novel of the second half of the 20th century - for example, Disgrace (J. M. Coetzee) and El entenado (Juan José Saer)-eclipsed the problem of referentiality by assuming that the historical novel should operate by its own procedures, and not those of history. The following sections discuss the referential turn in 21st century literary narratives, focusing on three novels: El material humano, by Rodrigo Rey Rosa; K. Relato de uma busca, by Bernardo Kucinski, and Jan Karski, by Yannick Haenel. The article concludes that the inversion of these two poles—from non-referentiality to the predominance of referentiality—is an unexpected facet of the elasticity of the concept (and practice) of fiction, which by denying itself ultimately enriches itself.

Abstract (sommario):
In his film The Wedding Director (2006), Marco Bellocchio expresses his view of the ‘Italian difference’ that demarcates this national tradition from others with the refrain ‘In Italy the dead rule.’ This adage is repeated throughout his film and provides the motivation behind it. For Bellocchio, the dead in question belong primarily, though not solely, to the Italian parochial heritage exemplified by Alessandro Manzoni’s The Betrothed (1840), and in particular by Mario Camerini’s film adaptation of the same novel (1941). In The Wedding Director, Bellocchio enacts yet another, albeit eclectic, adaptation of these palimpsests, desecrating them and the values they supposedly stand for. Crowned by a happy ending, The Wedding Director surpasses its targets, advocating for their visual and conceptual inadequacy. This essay analyzes Bellocchio’s film using a theoretical approach that I see articulated in two critical texts and four creative instances. Firstly, I analyze The Wedding Director in light of the concepts that Gilles Deleuze used for Carmelo Bene’s adaptations of classic works; secondly, through Richard Neer’s 2007 reflections on Jean-Luc Godard’s Histoire(s) du cinéma. My analyses result in a dual interpretation of Bellocchio’s film. I argue that in The Wedding Director Bellocchio enters into conversation with and implements the ideas of the intellectuals and artists mentioned above. He sets off from the conclusion of Federico Fellini’s 8 1/2. Nevertheless, The Wedding Director is also marred by ambiguities that, although perhaps unavoidable, detract from his accomplishments. Those ambivalences involve the issue of gender relations, which – as Bellocchio himself declares – are at the core of his concerns in The Wedding Director. I argue that on the one hand Bellocchio’s film is an empowering Deleuzian or Godardian adaptation of Manzoni’s source text. On the other, it may also be construed as professing an opportunistic, if not downright cynical, view of gender relations. While the film presents the audience with a principled Deleuzian becoming-minority as a becoming-woman, it nonetheless declines the responsibility of distinguishing victim from perpetrator. By leaving this issue an open question for the audience to decide, the film renders the question ultimately insoluble. The goals that Bellocchio professes and the diagnosis he offers in The Wedding Director are valuable and deserve credit. Without question, the film is a stunning cinematographic feat. However, a self-indulgent streak undercuts the viewer’s satisfaction. Unless we surpass irony (as the film attempts), we, regardless of our gender, will hardly be free from the hold of the dead, be they Italian or of any other nationality.

Abstract (sommario):
To date, the pandemic spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has involved over 100 countries in a matter of weeks, and Italy suffers from almost 1/3 of the dead cases worldwide. In this report, we show the strategies adopted to face the emergency at Centro Cardiologico Monzino, a mono-specialist cardiology hospital sited in the region of Italy most affected by the pandemic, and specifically we describe how we have progressively modified in a few weeks the organization of our Heart Failure Unit in order to cope with the new COVID-19 outbreak. In fact, on the background of the pandemic, cardiovascular diseases still occur frequently in the general population, but we observed consistent reduction in hospital admissions for acute cardiovascular events and a dramatic increase of late presentation acute myocardial infarction. Despite a reduction of healthcare workers number, our ward has been rearranged in order to take care of both COVID-19 and cardiovascular patients. In particular according to a triple step procedure we divided admitted patients in confirmed, suspected and excluded cases (respectively allocated in “red”, “pink” and “green” separated areas). Due to the absence of definite guidelines, our aim was to describe our strategy in facing the current emergency, in order to reorganize our hospital in a dynamic and proactive manner. To quote the famous Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni ‘It is less bad to be agitated in doubt than to rest in error.’

Abstract (sommario):
Carmelo Psaila (1871–1961), officially known as Dun Karm, has been acknowledged as Malta's national poet long before his death. He embodies the close relationship prevailing for long centuries between Italian culture and Maltese Literature. This essay seeks to unearth the basic characteristics of Dun Karm's poetry, in both Italian and Maltese, in the light of the Italian tradition, ranging from Dante to Monti and Manzoni. His initial identity is neoclassical, and as he moves ahead and gets more aware of his own environment, he assumes an ever growing romantic character. Various aspects of his style (vocabulary, rhythmic patterns, grammatical nuances) and metaphorical language show that there is a profound continuity between his writings in Italian and the subsequent ones in his own native tongue. Through a comparative analysis of his more typical poems, and with specific reference to Vincenzo Monti and Alessando Manzoni, the cultural personality of Dun Karm is identified and illustrated with numerous examples.

Abstract (sommario):
This article focuses on narrative features of Alessandro Manzoni's masterpiece I Promessi Sposi and indicates their relevance for translation The central concern is whether the translation of narrative issues, as parts of the récit, can alter the narrative content of the novel, the histoire, as Genette suggests With reference to examples from Manzoni's work, there follows a discussion of such issues as paratextual features, syntactic aspects, tempus changes, free indirect speech, and forms of address and the way translators have dealt with them in various target languages The rendering of these aspects in translation, which is affected by typological aspects of the respective target language, turns out to have an important impact on the kind of ’story‘ told by the novel and is thus a decisive criterion for translation quality

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Many scientific studies showed that the carcinogenic effects of environmental contamination of several metal and metalloids on bone marrow stem cells of human body. These carcinogens include, Cadmium, Mercury, Chromium, Aluminum, Nickel and Arsenic. However, there was no such analysis for elucidating the mechanism of carcinogenic effects and epigenetic reprogramming of human bone marrow stem cells. In this study, we analyzed the carcinogenic effects of mentioned carcinogens, and the mechanism of epigenetic reprogramming using NIH Toxicology Data Network (TOXNET), Comparative Toxico-genomics Database (CTD), AACR Genomics Evidence Neoplasia Information Exchange (GENIE) database, database of Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP), National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), and other bioinformatics database. We found from CTD analysis that the chemical gene interactions showed highly expressed of 272 common genes with miR140 by Cadmium, Mercury from total 3704 genes (approximately 7% affected genes). The AACR GENIE database analysis showed CDKN3, is associated with bone cancer (2 clinical data), HDAC7, TP53, MAPK3K1, MAP2K2 (8 clinical data) found among 272 genes regulated by Cadmium and Mercury. The CTD analysis showed the chemical gene interactions of highly expressed of 102 common genes with miR140 by Chromium, Mercury from a total of 1406 genes; 268 common genes with CD84, CD226 by Mercury, Nickel from a total of 5032 genes; 103 common genes with CD226 by Aluminum, Mercury from a total of 2556 genes; 248 common genes by Arsenic, Mercury from total 5508 genes. Among these 5508 genes, 248 common genes with ALDHA1, 247 common genes with CD40, 248 common genes with CD44, 247 common genes with CD423, 247 common genes with miR10A by Arsenic, Mercury from total 2556 genes. The epigenetic mechanisms of histone modifications (H3K9me3, H3K27me3, H3K27ac, H3K36me3, H3K4me1, H3K4me3 of B cells, hemopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal bone marrow, and chondrocyte stem cells and miRNAs) and these carcinogens have been revealed by the database of EHP, NIEHS, the NIH Roadmap Epigenomics Mapping Consortium, the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), and U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) database. Our previous study reported that the regulation of epigenetic bivalent histone modifications at transcript starts sequences (TSS) of target genes for heterogenic adult stem cells (CSCs)reprogramming and our current bioinformatics analysis revealed that TP53 is epigenetically reprogrammed with close interaction of thirteen genes by these carcinogens. Therefore, it is important to find the actual epigenetic mechanism both genomic and epigenomic transcriptional regulation and carcinogenic effects of these carcinogens on bone marrow stem cells, and our current study revealed this important relationship.
