Abstract (sommario):

Resolvers are widely used in electric vehicles, trains, and other harsh fields because of their robustness. However, the resolver outputs two orthogonal analog signals, which make the resolver decoding either high hardware cost or poor decoding accuracy. A noise robust resolver decoding method using Hilbert transform and angle-tracking observer (ATO) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, Hilbert transform is employed to obtain the modular envelopes of resolver signals. Next, the modular envelopes are filtered, and their quadrants are recognized by the polarity relation of the resolver signals and the modular envelope extreme point. Then, the ideal demodulating signals are gained through the linearization of the envelope zero point. Finally, the improved ATO is used to obtain the rotor angle by iteratively calculating the demodulating signal. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by experiments under various rotor speed conditions and compared with other methods in noise immunity. The results show that the proposed method can control the decoding error within 0.5° when the SNR is 30 dB, which provides a high-precision and low-cost decoding scheme for practical applications.

Given a set of desired joint torques in an n-DOF tendon-driven manipulator with n + 1 control tendons, the determination of tendon forces is an indeterminate problem. Usually, the pseudo-inverse technique is used to solve for such a problem. In this paper, rather than using the pseudo-inverse technique, an efficient methodology for transforming joint torques (n elements) to motor torques (n + 1 elements) has been developed. This technique, called “torque resolver,” utilizes two circuit-like operators to transform torques between the two different vector spaces. It can be easily programmed on a digital computer or implemented into an analog-circuit system. It is hoped that this technique will make real-time computed-torque control feasible. The technique has been demonstrated through the dynamic simulation of a three-DOF manipulator.

Recently, it has been shown that temporal metamaterials based on impulsive modulations of the constitutive parameters (of duration much smaller than a characteristic electromagnetic timescale) may exhibit a nonlocal response that can be harnessed so as to perform elementary analog computing on an impinging wavepacket. These short-pulsed metamaterials can be viewed as the temporal analog of conventional (spatial) metasurfaces. Here, inspired by the analogy with cascaded metasurfaces, we leverage this concept and take it one step further, by showing that short-pulsed metamaterials can be utilized as elementary bricks for more complex computations. To this aim, we develop a simple, approximate approach to systematically model the multiple actions of time-resolved short-pulsed metamaterials. Via a number of representative examples, we illustrate the computational capabilities enabled by this approach, in terms of simple and composed operations, and validate it against a rigorous numerical solution. Our results indicate that the temporal dimension may provide new degrees of freedom and design approaches in the emerging field of computational metamaterials, in addition or as an alternative to conventional spatially variant platforms.

Computing transient CFD simulations of turbocharger compressors is computationally very demanding. It is of fundamental importance to resolve turbulent structures at the location of their generation and to establish a fine enough grid to allow propagation of the resolved structures. This results in high-resolution grids, existing of more than 20 million cells. Applying Lighthill's analogy, it is possible to only resolve turbulent structures at their location of generation and compute the pressure propagation by using an additional, not that demanding, acoustic grid. This allows using coarser CFD grids in the inlet and outlet section. For transferring Lighthill's source terms from the CFD to the acoustic grid, advanced interpolation algorithms are used. The simulation results are validated by measurements of a cold gas test rig are considered.

ABSTRACT Two distinct mechanisms can be envisioned for resistance of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) reverse transcriptase (RT) to nucleoside analogs: one in which the mutations interfere with the ability of HIV-1 RT to incorporate the analog, and the other in which the mutations enhance the excision of the analog after it has been incorporated. It has been clear for some time that there are mutations that selectively interfere with the incorporation of nucleoside analogs; however, it has only recently been proposed that zidovudine (AZT) resistance can involve the excision of the nucleoside analog after it has been incorporated into viral DNA. Although this proposal resolves some important issues, it leaves some questions unanswered. In particular, how do the AZT resistance mutations enhance excision, and what mechanism(s) causes the excision reaction to be relatively specific for AZT? We have used both structural and biochemical data to develop a model. In this model, several of the mutations associated with AZT resistance act primarily to enhance the binding of ATP, which is the most likely pyrophosphate donor in the in vivo excision reaction. The AZT resistance mutations serve to increase the affinity of RT for ATP so that, at physiological ATP concentrations, excision is reasonably efficient. So far as we can determine, the specificity of the excision reaction for an AZT-terminated primer is not due to the mutations that confer resistance, but depends instead on the structure of the region around the HIV-1 RT polymerase active site and on its interactions with the azido group of AZT. Steric constraints involving the azido group cause the end of an AZT 5′-monophosphate-terminated primer to preferentially reside at the nucleotide binding site, which favors excision.

Background: Putative adverse effects of prostaglandin analogs in patients treated for glaucoma include periocular skin darkening, herpes simplex keratitis, cystoid macular edema, iritis, and headaches. Here, we report a case of migraine headache after a travoprost administration and discuss the role of prostaglandin analogs in migraine-like headaches. Case Presentation: A 70-year-old man visited the hospital complaining of pain, redness, and sensitivity to light for 1 week associated with gradual loss of vision in the right eye after cataract surgery, which had been performed 2 years prior. After the examination, the patient was diagnosed with pseudophakic bullous keratopathy and advised to undergo optical penetrating keratoplasty of the right eye. On postoperative day 3, his intraocular pressure (IOP) was 30 mmHg at 10:00 AM in the right eye. A single dose of 0.004% travoprost was instilled in the right eye on the same day. His IOP decreased to 16 mmHg at 2:00 PM. The next day, he presented with migraine-like headache that had started within 1 h after the instillation the previous night. Unremarkable neurological examination and neuroimaging suggested that travoprost had caused the migraine. Although the headache gradually resolved, it reappeared after the administration of other prostaglandins. Trabeculectomy was performed on the right side. The IOP was controlled, and the headache was resolved. Conclusions: This case indicates a potential causal relationship between topical prostaglandin analogs and migraine-like headaches, as evidenced by symptom resolution upon discontinuation. However, large-scale studies including control groups are required to prove a causal relationship between topical prostaglandin analog administrations and headache development.

Time-resolved confocal microspectrofluorometry and fluorescence microimaging were used to monitor how the model antisense oligonucleotide is transported into 3T3 living cells and distributed inside them. Phosphorothioate analog of 15-mer oligothymidylate labeled by ATTO 425 was complexed with Zn(II) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-N-methylpyridyl) porphyrin as an uptake-mediating agent. Homodyne phase-resolved technique based on a high frequency analog modulation of both exciting diode laser and detector image intensifier was used for time-resolved measurements. Decay-time data obtained within a broad range spectral region have provided unique information about the fate of both fluorophores inside the cell.

Abstract Time-resolved emission (TRE) systems are used in many FA labs for internal timing analysis of digital ICs. In this article, the authors explain how they use TRE systems to diagnose analog circuit failures as well. The key to their success is the use of an asynchronous trigger on the emission detector, which eliminates measurement error due to nonlinear distortion. A case study of an analog amplifier failure caused by a polysilicon short demonstrates the effectiveness of their technique.

Abstract Background: The addition of rituximab to combination chemotherapy has improved treatment outcomes of indolent lymphomas. Combination therapy with purine analogs, akylating agents, and monoclonal antibodies is a promising approach for treating indolent B-cell lymphoma. Nucleoside analog-based regimens selectively target lymphoid cells, making them attractive drugs for lymphoid cancers. Pentostatin is a nucleoside analog that compared with other nucleoside analogs is reported to have less bone marrow cell toxicity. The combination of pentostatin, cyclophosphamide, and rituximab (PCR) is an effective regimen for relapsed chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Methods:In this study, we examined the efficacy of pentostatin, cyclophosphamide, and rituximab for the treatment of B-cell lymphoma. Pentostatin (4 mg/m2), cyclophosphamide (600 mg/m2), and rituximab (375 mg/m2) were given on day 1 of a 21-day cycle with planned 6 or 9 cycles and restaging after every 3 cycles. Patients received prophylaxis with acyclovir 400 mg/po bid and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole 3 times per week. Small lymphocytic lymphoma/chronic lymphocytic leukemia (SLL/CLL) tissues were stained for ZAP70 protein. Results: At the time of abstract submission, 80 patients with a median age was 60 years were treated, 43 patients with follicular lymphoma, 27 with SLL/CLL, and 9 with mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue. We observed an overall response of 77 out of 80 (96%), CR/CRu in 65 out of 80 (81%), PR in 12 out of 80 (15%), and mixed response or progression in 3 out of 80 (4%). Neutropenia (49% < 1000/uL), thrombocytopenia (2% < 100,000/uL), nausea (15% grade 3), fatigue (37% grade 3 and 4), and muscle pain (21% grade 3) was observed. ZAP70 staining and response will be reported. Two patients experienced prolonged pancytopenia that resolved and no cases of myelodysplasia were observed. Conclusions: PCR therapy is an effective regimen in indolent B cell lymphoma with tolerable toxicity.

Hypothalamic hamartomas (HHs) are benign lesions that are often associated with central precocious puberty and may present with gelastic seizures. Treatment modalities for HH include medical therapy with long-term gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs or resection. The authors report the case of a 7-year-old girl who was diagnosed with an HH due to precocious puberty and was treated medically with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog for 3 years. Despite normalization of her plasma levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and estradiol and arrest of her precocious puberty, the patient developed progressive weight gain associated with extreme hyperphagia and morbid obesity by the age of 10 years. Her compulsive eating patterns were refractory to counseling and other interventions attempted by her parents and physicians. After resection of the HH, her hyperphagia resolved and her weight stabilized. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report describing resection of an HH for the purpose of treating hyperphagia and obesity.

AbstractThere is a family of questions in relativized complexity theory—weak analogs of the Friedberg Jump-Inversion Theorem—that are resolved by 1-generic sets but which cannot be resolved by essentially any weaker notion of genericity. This paper defines aw2-generic sets, i.e., sets which meet every dense set of strings that is re. in some incomplete r.e. set. Aw2-generic sets are very close to 1-generic sets in strength, but are too weak to resolve these questions. In particular, it is shown that for any set X there is an aw2-generic set G such that NPG ∩ co-NPG ⊈ PG⊕x. (On the other hand, if G is 1-generic, then NPG ∩ co-NPG ⊆ PG⊕SAT, where SAT is the NP-complete satisfiability problem [6].) This result runs counter to the fact that most finite extension constructions in complexity theory can be made effective. These results imply that any finite extension construction that ensures any of the Friedberg analogs must be noneffective, even relative to an arbitrary incomplete r.e. set. It is then shown that the recursion theoretic properties of aw2-generic sets differ radically from those of 1-generic sets: every degree above 0′ contains an aw2-generic set: no aw2-generic set exists below any incomplete r.e. set: there is an aw2-generic set which is the join of two Turing equivalent aw2-generic sets. Finally, a result of Shore is presented [30] which states that every degree above 0′ is the jump of an aw2-generic degree.

Context. HD 95086 (A8V, 17 Myr) hosts a rare planetary system for which a multi-belt debris disk and a giant planet of 4–5 MJup have been directly imaged. Aims. Our study aims to characterize the global architecture of this young system using the combination of radial velocity and direct imaging observations. We want to characterize the physical and orbital properties of HD 95086 b, search for additional planets at short and wide orbits and image the cold outer debris belt in scattered light. Methods. We used HARPS at the ESO 3.6 m telescope to monitor the radial velocity of HD 95086 over two years and investigate the existence of giant planets at less than 3 au orbital distance. With the IRDIS dual-band imager and the IFS integral field spectrograph of SPHERE at VLT, we imaged the faint circumstellar environment beyond 10 au at six epochs between 2015 and 2017. Results. We do not detect additional giant planets around HD 95086. We identify the nature (bound companion or background contaminant) of all point-like sources detected in the IRDIS field of view. None of them correspond to the ones recently discovered near the edge of the cold outer belt by ALMA. HD 95086 b is resolved for the first time in J-band with IFS. Its near-infrared spectral energy distribution is well fitted by a few dusty and/or young L7–L9 dwarf spectral templates. The extremely red 1–4 μm spectral distribution is typical of low-gravity objects at the L/T spectral type transition. The planet’s orbital motion is resolved between January 2015 and May 2017. Together with past NaCo measurements properly re-calibrated, our orbital fitting solutions favor a retrograde low to moderate-eccentricity orbit e = 0.2+0.3−0.2, with a semi-major axis ~52 au corresponding to orbital periods of ~288 yr and an inclination that peaks at i = 141°, which is compatible with a planet-disk coplanar configuration. Finally, we report the detection in polarimetric differential imaging of the cold outer debris belt between 100 and 300 au, consistent in radial extent with recent ALMA 1.3 mm resolved observations.

Objective: To report a case of foscarnet-induced penile ulcerations and review literature related to this adverse effect. Data Sources: Case reports and review articles identified by a computerized search (MEDLINE) and manual search (Index Medicus). Data Synthesis: Foscarnet is a pyrophosphate analog antiviral agent that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treating cytomegalovirus retinitis in patients with AIDS. It also is used investigationally for other indications and human herpesvirus infections. Adverse effects include nephrotoxicity, anemia, ionized calcium abnormalities, and penile ulcerations. The majority of penile ulcers have developed within two weeks following initiation of foscarnet therapy with dosages of 180–200 mg/kg/d. Most cases required discontinuation of foscarnet to resolve the penile lesions. A postulated mechanism for this effect is inflammatory contact dermatitis from exposure to urine with elevated concentrations of foscarnet. We report a case of foscarnet-induced penile ulcerations that resolved after discontinuing this agent. Conclusions: Foscarnet can induce penile ulcerations. Increased awareness of this phenomenon, along with meticulous genital hygiene and urination practices, are required for its prevention.

An applied hardware circuit for detecting the AGC signals isolated with DSP is designed based on a high-linearity analog optocoupler. The problem of narrow measuring scope, low linearity and instability which caused by noisy signals is resolved when collects industrial analog signals into DSP. The practical circuit with proper design of components is designed through repeated experiments. The experiment data are analyzed by the method of least-square. The analyzed results show this circuit has the high accuracy and good linearity.

Abstract. A new data set of 88 marine surface sediment samples and related oceanic environmental variables (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a, oxygen, etc.) was studied to quantify the relationship between assemblages of coccolithophore species and modern environmental conditions in the western Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, west of the Strait of Gibraltar. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed that coccolithophore species were primarily related to sea surface salinity (SSS), explaining an independent and significant proportion of variance in the coccolithophore data. A quantitative coccolithophore-based transfer function to estimate SSS was developed using the modern analog technique (MAT) and weighted-averaging partial least square regression (WA-PLS). The bootstrapped regression coefficient (R2boot) was 0.85MAT and 0.80WA-PLS, with a root-mean-square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 0.29MAT and 0.30WA-PLS (psu). A new dataset of 88 marine surface sediment samples and related oceanic environmental variables (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a, oxygen, etc.) was studied to quantify the relationship between assemblages of coccolithophore species and modern environmental conditions in the Western Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, west of the Strait of Gibraltar. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed that coccolithophore species were primarily related to the sea surface salinity (SSS) gradient, which explains an independent and significant proportion of variance in the coccolithophore data. A quantitative coccolithophore-based transfer function to estimate SSS was developed using the Modern Analog Technique (MAT) and weighted-averaging partial-least square regression (WA-PLS). The bootstrapped regression coefficient (R2boot) was 0.85MAT and 0.80WA-PLS, with root-mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 0.29MAT and 0.30WA-PLS (psu). Although the function of liver fatty acid binding protein in hepatic fatty acid metabolism has been extensively studied, its potential role in hepatic cholesterol homeostasis is less clear. Although hepatic cholesterol accumulation was initially reported in L-FABP-null female mice, that study was performed with early N2 backcross generation mice. To resolve whether the hepatic cholesterol phenotype in these L-FABP−/− mice was attributable to genetic inhomogeneity, these L-FABP−/− mice were further backcrossed to C57Bl/6 mice up to the N10 (99.9% homogeneity) generation. Hepatic total cholesterol accumulation was observed in female, but not male, L-FABP−/− mice at all (N2, N4, N6, N10) backcross generations examined. The greater total cholesterol was due to increased hepatic levels of both unesterified (free) cholesterol and esterified cholesterol. Altered hepatic cholesterol accumulation correlated directly with L-FABP's ability to bind cholesterol with high affinity as shown by direct L-FABP binding of fluorescent cholesterol analogs (NBD-cholesterol, dansyl-cholesterol), a photoactivatable cholesterol analog [free cholesterol benzophenone (FCBP)], and free cholesterol (circular dichroism, isothermal titration microcalorimetry). One mole of fluorescent sterol was bound per mole of L-FABP. This was confirmed by photo-cross-linking studies with the photoactivatable cholesterol analog FCBP and by isothermal titration calorimetry with free cholesterol, which showed that L-FABP bound only one sterol molecule per L-FABP molecule. In contrast, the hepatic phenotype of male, but not female, L-FABP−/− mice was characterized by decreased hepatic triacylglycerol levels at all backcross generations examined. Taken together, these data support the hypothesis that L-FABP plays a role in physiological regulation of not only hepatic fatty acid metabolism, but also that of hepatic cholesterol.

Abstract The chemistry of phosphorus in star- and planet-forming regions is poorly understood, despite the central role of phosphorus in terrestrial biochemistry. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array band 3 and 4 observations of PO and PN toward the Class I protostar B1-a, representing the first spatially resolved observations of phosphorus carriers toward a solar-type star-forming region. The phosphorus molecules emit from two distinct clumps, which coincide with regions where the protostellar outflow (traced by SiO) interacts with a filament of dense gas (traced by CCS). Thus, the gas-phase phosphorus seems to originate from the shocking of dense interstellar clumps. Based on the observed emission patterns, PO and PN appear to be daughter products of a solid phosphorus carrier with an intermediate volatility between ices and silicate grains. Interstellar shocks may therefore play an important role in converting semi-refractory phosphorus to a more volatile form prior to incorporation into cometary ices. Indeed, the (PO+PN)/CH3OH ratio is similar in B1-a and comet 67P, implying a comparable reservoir of volatile phosphorus. The PO/PN ratio ranges from ∼1–8 across B1-a. The northern emission clump exhibits a lower PO/PN ratio and weaker 13CH3OH emission than southern clump, indicating distinct shock physics and chemistry at the two positions. Resolved observations of P carriers toward additional sources are needed to better understand what regulates such variations in the PO/PN ratio in protostellar environments.

Being able to accurately control the interaction of spin waves is a crucial challenge for magnonics in order to offer an alternative wave-based computing scheme for certain technological applications. Especially in neural networks and neuromorphic computing, wave-based approaches can offer significant advantages over traditional CMOS-based binary computing schemes with regard to performance and power consumption. In this work, we demonstrate precise modulation of phase- and amplitude-sensitive interference of coherent spin waves in a yttrium–iron–garnet based magnonic analog adder device, while also showing the feasibility of frequency-division multiplexing. Using time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy, the interference was directly observed, giving an important proof of concept for this kind of analog computing device and its underlying working principle. This constitutes a step toward wave-based analog computing using magnons as an information carrier.

We study lattice constructions of gapped fermionic phases of matter. We show that the construction of fermionic Symmetry Protected Topological orders by Gu and Wen has a hidden dependence on a discrete spin structure on the Euclidean space-time. The spin structure is needed to resolve ambiguities which are otherwise present. An identical ambiguity is shown to arise in the fermionic analog of the string-net construction of 2D topological orders. We argue that the need for a spin structure is a general feature of lattice models with local fermionic degrees of freedom and is a lattice analog of the spin-statistics relation.

An efficient synthesis of rac-6-desmethyl-5β–hydroxy-d-secoartemisinin 2, a tricyclic analog of R-(+)-artemisinin 1, was accomplished and the racemate was resolved into the (+)-2b and (−)-2a enantiomers via their Mosher Ester diastereomers. Antimalarial activity resided with only the artemisinin-like enantiomer R-(−)-2a. Several new compounds 9–16, 19a, 19b, 22 and 29 were synthesized from rac-2 but the C-5 secondary hydroxyl group was surprisingly unreactive. For example, the formation of carbamates and Mitsunobu reactions were unsuccessful. In order to assess the unusual reactivity of 2, a single crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed a close intramolecular hydrogen bond from the C-5 alcohol to the oxepane ether oxygen (O-11). All products were tested in vitro against the W-2 and D-6 strains of Plasmodium falciparum. Several of the analogs had moderate activity in comparison to the natural product 1. Iron (II) bromide-promoted rearrangement of 2 gave, in 50% yield, the ring-contracted tetrahydrofuran 22, while the 5-ketone 15 provided a monocyclic methyl ketone 29 (50%). Neither 22 nor 29 possessed in vitro antimalarial activity. These results have implications in regard to the antimalarial mechanism of action of artemisinin.

The frequency and algebraic directions of researches of robust stability are considered. Frequency or Tsypkin-Polyaka’s direction is considered briefly in a survey order. The algebraic or Kharitonov’s direction is considered more more widely, namely basic provisions and results of the Algebraic method of robust stability of interval dynamic systems developed within development algebraic or Kharitonov’s direction of robust stability are presented. Fundamental works of V. L. Kharitonov since issue have caused a huge flow of the publications connected with extreme relevance of the solution of problems of a robustness of systems. So far from a circle of problems of a robustness many issues of robust stability are resolved. Discrete analogs and versions of theorems of Kharitonov are received. Frequency conditions of robust stability are considered and solved in Ya. Z. Tsypkin, B. T. Polyak, Yu. I. Neymark works. However in a problem of robust stability not all issues are so far resolved, especially big contradictions have arisen in a continuous case. Also the tasks considered here for interval matrixes and polyhedrons of matrixes haven’t been solved. In work the theorem like the third theorem of Kharitonov which cancels counterexamples to former known results in this direction is formulated and proved and also on its basis the costal theorem for polyhedrons of matrixes is proved. The new costal theorem also cancels counterexamples for this case. To the main theorem of the considered algebraic method the specifying remark is formulated that in the absence of a full set of four angular polynoms of Kharitonov of a condition of this theorem are necessary, but can be insufficient for stability of system. Determination of angular separate coefficients of a characteristic polynom of system is generally carried out by means of use of methods of nonlinear programming. For a discrete case the discrete analog of the theorem of Kharitonov which is received on the basis of Schur’s theorem is presented. At the same time, the concepts of points and intervals of a variabless used for the theorem of an analog of a continuous case are entered. The algorithm of definition of a robustness of discrete systems is formulated. The main results, the Algebraic method of robust stability developed by the author are illustrated with cancellation of the counterexamples widely known from scientific literature.

Thomas de Vio Cajetan produced a highly influential Thomistic treatise on analogy entitled De nominum analogia. The merits of this work have been contested since the sixteenth century. Notable twentieth-century Thomists who adopted many of the teachings of De nominum analogia include Jacques Maritain and Yves Simon. Joshua Hochschild’s The Semantics of Analogy highlighted the significance of chapter ten, where Cajetan applies his theory to resolve the problem of demonstrations that use analogous terms, with the explicit purpose of addressing a serious challenge from Scotists regarding the use of analogy in metaphysics. This paper examines the criticism of Cajetan’s way of using analogous terms in demonstrations by the seventeenth-century Franciscan Scotist Bartolomeo Mastri. It shows how the Thomist differs from the Scotist and analyzes these rival positions.

Abstract A time-resolved pulsed fluorescence immunometric assay (TR-PFIA) for carcinoembryonic antigen is described in which either Eu(III) or Tb(III) chelate is used as label. Described in detail is the assay involving the well-documented format of microtiter matrix and Eu(III) fluorescence enhanced with a beta-diketone and quantified in a commercial time-resolving fluorometer. We have also used the same basic assay, but one with a Tb(III) chelate as label, and we read the fluorescence signal directly off a surface without the application of enhancement solution. The Tb(III) fluorescence is then brought into solution by using an analog of dipicolinic acid in an enhancement solution. The latter approach demonstrates the scope of the methodology, which invokes the extra complexity of enhancement only when increased sensitivity might be required. The power and versatility of the enhancement methodology are demonstrated.

The type of protein kinase A (PKA) responsible for cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) activation was determined with adenosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate analogs capable of selectively activating type I or type II PKA. The type II-selective pair stimulated chloride efflux in airway, pancreatic, and colonic epithelial cells; the type I-selective pair only stimulated a calcium-dependent efflux in airway cells. The type II-selective analogs activated larger increases in CFTR-mediated current than did the type I-selective analogs. Measurement of soluble PKA activity demonstrated similar levels stimulated by type I- and type II-selective analogs, creating an apparent paradox regarding PKA activity and current generated. Also, addition of forskolin after the type I-selective analogs resulted in an increase in current; little increase was seen after the type II-selective analogs. Measurement of insoluble PKA activity stimulated by the analogs resolved this paradox. Type II-selective analogs stimulated three times as much insoluble PKA activity as the type I-selective pair, indicating that differential activation of PKA in cellular compartments is important in CFTR regulation.

Abstract Previous studies of the exoplanet LTT 1445Ac concluded that the light curve from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) was consistent with both grazing and nongrazing geometries. As a result, the radius and hence density of the planet remained unknown. To resolve this ambiguity, we observed the LTT 1445 system for six spacecraft orbits of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) using WFC3/UVIS imaging in spatial scan mode, including one partial transit of LTT 1445Ac. This imaging produces resolved light curves of each of the three stars in the LTT 1445 system. We confirm that the planet transits LTT 1445A and that LTT 1445C is the source of the rotational modulation seen in the TESS light curve, and we refine the estimate of the dilution factor for the TESS data. We perform a joint fit to the TESS and HST observations, finding that the transit of LTT 1445Ac is not grazing with 97% confidence. We measure a planetary radius of 1.07 − 0.07 + 0.10 R ⊕ . Combined with previous radial velocity observations, our analysis yields a planetary mass of 1.37 ± 0.19 M ⊕ and a planetary density of 5.9 − 1.5 + 1.8 g cm−3. LTT 1445Ac is likely an Earth analog with respect to its mass and radius, albeit with a higher instellation, and is therefore an exciting target for future atmospheric studies.

Outcrop analogs play a central role in understanding subseismic interwell depositional facies heterogeneity of carbonate reservoirs. Outcrop geologists rarely utilize near-surface seismic data due to the limited vertical resolution and difficulty visualizing seismic signals as “band-limited rocks.” This study proposes a methodology using a combination of forward modeling and conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN) to translate seismic-derived acoustic impedance (AI) into a pseudo-high-resolution virtual outcrop. We tested the methodology on the Hanifa reservoir analog outcropping in Wadi Birk, Saudi Arabia. We interpret a 4 km long outcrop photomosaic from a digital outcrop model (DOM) for its depositional facies, populate the DOM with AI properties, and forward calculate the band-limited AI of the DOM facies using colored inversion. We pair the synthetic band-limited AI with DOM facies and train them using a cGAN. Similarly, we pair the DOM facies with outcrop photos and train them using a cGAN. We chain the two trained networks and apply them to the approximately 600 m long seismic-derived AI data acquired just behind the outcrop. The result translates AI images into a virtual outcrop “behind-the-outcrop” model. This virtual outcrop model is a visual medium that operates at a resolution and format more familiar to outcrop geologists. This model resolves subseismic stratigraphic features such as the intricate downlap-onlap stratal termination at scales of tens of centimeters and the outline of buildup facies, which are otherwise unresolvable in the band-limited AI.

Resolution of inflammation is an active process driven by several new families of endogenous lipid mediators collectively coined specialized proresolving mediators (SPM). Here, we report a synthetic analog of resolvin D1 (RvD1) and aspirin-triggered RvD1, benzo-diacetylenic-17 R-RvD1-methyl ester (BDA-RvD1), which was prepared using fewer steps than required for total organic synthesis of natural SPM. BDA-RvD1 was resistant to further metabolism by human recombinant 15-prostaglandin dehydrogenase, a major inactivation pathway for RvD1. In ischemia-reperfusion-initiated second organ injury, BDA-RvD1 intravenously (1 μg) reduced neutrophil infiltration into the lungs by 58 ± 9% and was significantly more potent than native RvD1. BDA-RvD1 at 100 ng/mouse also shortened the resolution interval, Ri, of Escherichia coli peritonitis with a similar potency as RvD1, by ∼57%, from Ri 10.5 h to 4.5 h. With isolated human phagocytes, BDA-RvD1 at picomolar concentrations (10−12 M) stimulated phagocytosis of zymosan A particles. BDA-RvD1 activated human recombinant G protein-coupled receptor 32/DRV1, an RvD1 receptor, in a dose-dependent manner. These results indicate that, both in vivo in mice and with isolated human cells, BDA-RvD1 shares defining proresolving actions of RvD1, including inhibiting leukocyte infiltration and stimulating phagocytosis. Moreover, they provide evidence for a new analog mimetic and example of an immunoresolvent, namely an agent that stimulates active resolution of inflammation, for a potential new therapeutic class.

The single-particle spectral function measures the density of electronic states in a material as a function of both momentum and energy, providing central insights into strongly correlated electron phenomena. Here we demonstrate a high-resolution method for measuring the full momentum- and energy-resolved electronic spectral function of a two-dimensional (2D) electronic system embedded in a semiconductor. The technique remains operational in the presence of large externally applied magnetic fields and functions even for electronic systems with zero electrical conductivity or with zero electron density. Using the technique on a prototypical 2D system, a GaAs quantum well, we uncover signatures of many-body effects involving electron-phonon interactions, plasmons, polarons, and a phonon analog of the vacuum Rabi splitting in atomic systems.

Fluorescence microimaging and homodyne phase-resolved confocal microspectrofluorimetry were used to monitor the transport of antisense oligonucleotide into cancer MCF7 cells and the subsequent intracellular distribution. Phosphorothioate analog of 15-mer oligoadenylate (dA15) labeled by ATTO 425 was complexed with 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (1-methyl-4-pyridyl) porphyrin (H2TMPyP4) as an uptake-mediating agent. Fluorescence lifetime data within a broad spectral range have revealed properties of both components inside the cell. H2TMPyP4 lifetime inside the cell is not influenced in this malignant cell line, while the lifetime of modified oligonucleotide was found to be slightly shortened.

The paper considers the history and current state of the process of digitization of analog documents in the Russian Federation. A comparative analysis of the current issues of digitization of analog documents in foreign countries and in Russia is carried out. The basis for the research is composed by the articles of Russian and foreign experts, which highlight the experience of archives in digitizing analog documents. The author comes to the conclusion that it is necessary to conduct a largescale discussion by the archivists of federal state archives and the archives of the subjects of the Russian Federation of the current issues connected with the process of digitization of analog documents. The accumulated experience of digitizing analog documents in Russia shows that the most important issues for activating the process of high-quality digitization of analog documents, directly related to the possibility of their subsequent use, are the issues related to the creation of a unified state digitization program, among the tasks of which there can be: the need to summarize the work done in that direction in the regions; the identification of the “pain points” (in particular, the need to create a unified regulatory and methodological framework); the consideration of financing issues that will allow the archives to be provided with qualified IT specialists and the necessary equipment; the possibility of concluding contracts with the third-party organizations that might be responsible for the digitization entrusted to them; etc. Archives for the most part have not yet faced the issues of accepting initially digital documents for state storage. It is necessary to use the existing situation to resolve the accumulated difficulties with digitization that require the discussion at the all-Russia level. After all, until now, an average of about 5% of documents in need of digitization have only been digitized in the archives. Thus, if one proceeds from the number of digitized analog documents indicated by the regional archives, the challenges of digitization have not lost their relevance

Context. Spectroscopy across spatially resolved stellar surfaces reveals spectral line profiles free from rotational broadening, whose gradual changes from disk center toward the stellar limb reflect an atmospheric fine structure that is possible to model by 3D hydrodynamics. Aims. Previous studies of photospheric spectral lines across stellar disks exist for the Sun and HD 209458 (G0 V) and are now extended to the planet-hosting HD 189733A to sample a cooler K-type star and explore the future potential of the method. Methods. During exoplanet transit, stellar surface portions successively become hidden and differential spectroscopy between various transit phases uncovers spectra of small surface segments temporarily hidden behind the planet. The method was elaborated in Paper I, in which observable signatures were predicted quantitatively from hydrodynamic simulations. Results. From observations of HD 189733A with the ESO HARPS spectrometer at λ/Δλ~ 115 000, profiles for stronger and weaker Fe I lines are retrieved at several center-to-limb positions, reaching adequate S/N after averaging over numerous similar lines. Conclusions. Retrieved line profile widths and depths are compared to synthetic ones from models with parameters bracketing those of the target star and are found to be consistent with 3D simulations. Center-to-limb changes strongly depend on the surface granulation structure and much greater line-width variation is predicted in hotter F-type stars with vigorous granulation than in cooler K-types. Such parameters, obtained from fits to full line profiles, are realistic to retrieve for brighter planet-hosting stars, while their hydrodynamic modeling offers previously unexplored diagnostics for stellar atmospheric fine structure and 3D line formation. Precise modeling may be required in searches for Earth-analog exoplanets around K-type stars, whose more tranquil surface granulation and lower ensuing microvariability may enable such detections.
