Lombardo, Luca. Albertino Mussato, Epistole metriche Edizione critica, traduzione e commento. Venice: Fondazione Università Ca’ Foscari, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.30687/978-88-6969-436-3.

Abstract (sommario):
The Metric Epistles of Albertino Mussato (1261-1329) are a collection of 20 compositions in Latin verse (of which, 12 in elegiac couplets, 8 in hexameters, for a total of 1,570 verses) composed between 1309 and 1326 and addressed to different recipients. The list of recipients includes friends of the author and representatives of the Paduan political and intellectual élite of the early 14th century such as the judges Rolando da Piazzola, Giovanni da Vigonza and Paolo da Teolo, the notary Zambono d’Andrea and Marsilio Mainardini; masters of grammar and rhetoric such as the Venetian Giovanni Cassio, Bonincontro from Mantua and Guizzardo from Bologna; religious personalities such as the Dominican friars Benedetto and Giovannino da Mantova, respectively lecturer and professor of theology at the Studium Generale of the convent of S. Agostino in Padua; collective recipients, such as the College of Artists and fellow citizens of Padua. After an editio princeps was printed in Venice in 1636 on the basis of a now lost manuscript, a critical edition of the Epistles is published here for the first time, including the complete corpus of the texts in the light of their entire manuscript tradition. The texts are accompanied by an Italian translation and a detailed commentary, which mainly aims to bring to light and analyse the dense intertextuality of Mussato’s poem (in particular classical Latin sources), reconsidering the cultural background of the author and his contemporaries in the context of the so-called ‘Paduan prehumanism’ and an ideal dialogue with Dante’s coeval biographical and literary experiences.

Abstract (sommario):
This book uses concepts from optimization theory to develop an integrated analytic framework for treating consumer, producer, and market equilibrium analyses as special cases of a generic optimization problem. The same framework applies to both stochastic and non-stochastic decision settings, so that the latter is recognized as an (important) special case of the former. The analytic techniques are borrowed from convex analysis and variational analysis. Special emphasis is given to generalized notions of differentiability, conjugacy theory, and Fenchel's Duality Theorem. The book shows how virtually identical conjugate analyses form the basis for modeling economic behavior in each of the areas studied. The basic analytic concepts are borrowed from convex analysis. Special emphasis is given to generalized notions of differentiability, conjugacy theory, and Fenchel's Duality Theorem. It is demonstrated how virtually identical conjugate analyses form the basis for modelling economic behaviour in each of the areas studied.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter introduces the geometric preliminaries needed to analyze generalized Kimura diffusions, with particular emphasis on Wright–Fisher geometry. It begins with a discussion of the natural domains of definition for generalized Kimura diffusions: polyhedra in Euclidean space or, more generally, abstract manifolds with corners. Amongst the convex polyhedra, the chapter distinguishes the subclass of regular convex polyhedra P. P is a regular convex polyhedron if it is convex and if near any corner, P is the intersection of no more than N half-spaces with corresponding normal vectors that are linearly independent. These definitions establish that any regular convex polyhedron is a manifold with corners. The chapter concludes by defining the general class of elliptic Kimura operators on a manifold with corners P and shows that there is a local normal form for any operator L in this class.

Abstract (sommario):
Neuroethics is concerned with the ethical, legal, and policy issues raised by the neurosciences and their applications in medicine and society. However, neuroscience sometimes involves other emerging biomedical technologies, such as genetics, regenerative medicine, and synthetic biology, which generate their own ethics and policy conundrums. When emerging biomedical technologies converge or collide in a single project, application, or product, challenges are compounded. These challenges may be mitigated by the development of shared models for ethical analysis focused not on the details of a particular technology but rather on the nature of the class of technologies, such as whether they are emerging, rapidly evolving, and ethically contentious. These challenges and characteristics, and a framework approach to managing them, are the focus of this chapter.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter analyses the position of ‘administrative law’ vis-à-vis ‘constitutional law’, and vice versa, from a comparative and historical perspective. Its primary aim is to get an exact view of how far the national legal systems in Europe converge, or diverge, with respect to the relationship between constitutional and administrative law. However, pleading the thesis of an Ius commune Europaeum (i.e., the existence of a common legal view in Europe) requires an in-depth analysis of all European countries, without excluding individual cases that do not fit into the mainstream (particularly the United Kingdom and Sweden). Only then can any thesis of unity amongst diversity be truly persuasive. In addition, the secondary aim of this chapter's investigation is to get a better theoretical understanding of administrative law in general.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter analyses India’s prospects as a rising power by asking what kind of power India has the potential to be, given its military, economic, and institutional capacities and the economic and geostrategic constraints it faces. It argues that while sustained high growth is a necessary condition it is not a sufficient condition since economic growth does not necessarily convert smoothly into greater power. Due to such conversion problems India, like some other powers, might not be able to exercise commensurate regional, extra-regional, and global influence as might appear to follow from the revival of sustained high growth and increased economic weight. The more achievable and likely alternative is that of a coalitional or bridging power that can play the role of an effective partner in the security and other spheres to a range of powers, principally to the United States and in the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter begins the book’s analysis of gratitude. The fundamental religious attitude as the poem conveys it is life lived as experiencing a gift. Gratitude is the response this experience calls for. However, for gratitude to acquire value, it must be tested in various ways. To fall is to avoid gratitude. Three such avoidances—Satan’s, Adam’s, and Eve’s—are presented. A connection with contemporary gift-theory is also made in this chapter. Derrida and Jean-Luc Marion have claimed that the notion of the gift is paradoxical. Inspired by Mauss, both assert that gifts do not transcend the sphere of exchange. Milton’s Satan enables us to pinpoint their mistake.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter focuses on personal obligations. As has been described, one of the reasons contractual burdens are generally unassignable is because the beneficiary of the promise cannot, without his consent, be deprived of his rights as against his contractual counterparty. Here the concern is with the converse situation, where the beneficiary of a right wishes to transfer that right to someone else. The chapter then considers the reasons for the rule that a personal contractual obligation should not be assignable to a third party, analyses the test established by the relevant case law for determining whether a particular obligation is indeed a personal obligation, and sets out a number of the ways in which this test has been applied to specific factual scenarios.

Abstract (sommario):
Active microrheology uses external forces (most typically magnetic or optical) to force microrheological probes into motion. These techniques short-circuit the Einstein component of passive microrheology. Active microrheology provides an additional handle to probe material properties, and has been used both to extend the range of materials amenable to microrheological analysis, and to examine material properties that are inaccessible to passive microrheology. Three main topics are presented: the use of active microrheology to extend the range of passive microrheology, while maintaining many of the advantages (small sample size, wide frequency range, etc.); its use to complement passive microrheology in active systems, which convert chemical fuel to mechanical work, in order to elucidate the power provided by molecular motors, for instance; and its application (and potential limitations) to investigate the non-linear response properties of materials, including shear thinning and yielding.

Abstract (sommario):
In an era of mass mobility, those who are permitted to migrate and those who are criminalized, controlled, and prohibited from migrating are heavily patterned by race. By placing race at the centre of its analysis, this volume brings together fourteen essays that examine, question, and explain the growing intersection between criminal justice and migration control. Through the lens of race, we see how criminal justice and migration enmesh in order to exclude, stop, and excise racialized citizens and non-citizens from societies across the world within, beyond, and along borders. Neatly organized in four parts, the book begins with chapters that present a conceptual analysis of race, borders, and social control, moving to the institutions that make up and shape the criminal justice and migration complex. The remaining chapters are convened around the key sites where criminal justice and migration control intersect: policing, courts, and punishment. Together the volume presents a critical and timely analysis of how race shapes and complicates mobility and how racism is enabled and reanimated when criminal justice and migration control coalesce. Race and the meaning of race in relation to citizenship and belonging are excavated throughout the chapters presented in the book, thereby transforming the way we think about migration.

Abstract (sommario):
In this chapter the author examines the forces shaping state polices, some of which create great diversity among them. He outlines a framework for analysis that focuses on four types of contextual factors: external constraints, resources, preferences, and institutions. Although some evidence indicates that resources, preferences, and at least one type of policy output—the scale of state government spending—did converge during the 1960s and 1970s, little or no further convergence has occurred since about 1980. The author then discusses each set of factors in turn, seeking to identify reasons for continued diversity in state policy outputs. The final section identifies areas where further research might be particularly useful and interesting.

This chapter delves into Jane Bolin's tenure on the bench and analyzes her public and professional voice against social injustice. A sample of Bolin's judicial decisions that were selected for publication due to their usefulness as precedent, along with her speeches and letters of communication, convey the determination of an ardent integrationist and the immense compassion and intellect that endeared her to La Guardia and her judicial peers. Judge Bolin was committed to making the law an instrument of fairness but did not confine her activism to the physical halls of justice. A staunch integrationist, she confronted discrimination throughout municipal government and the private sector without regard for the security of her reappointment.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter analyzes the food passions of Meiji-era poet and inventor of the modern haiku Masaoka Shiki (1867–1902). Bedridden for his final five years, he continued to obsessively consume and write about choice morsels he demanded from his family and disciples although his body was no longer capable of digesting them. The chapter illustrates the deceptive simplicity in Masaoka’s poetry and prose on food, and how his use of descriptive minimalism, lists, and personification worked to impart the “essences” of food and the (homo)social relationships evoked by eating. It suggests that Masaoka employed minimalism because language was insufficient to wholly convey one individual's sensual experience to another.

Duffley, Patrick. Linguistic Meaning Meets Linguistic Form. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198850700.001.0001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This book steers a middle course between two opposing conceptions that currently dominate the field of semantics, the logical and cognitive approaches. It brings to light the inadequacies of both frameworks, and argues along with the Columbia School that linguistic semantics must be grounded on the linguistic sign itself and the meaning it conveys across the full range of its uses. The book offers 12 case studies demonstrating the explanatory power of a sign-based semantics, dealing with topics such as complementation with aspectual and causative verbs, control and raising, wh- words, full-verb inversion, and existential-there constructions. It calls for a radical revision of the semantics/pragmatics interface, proposing that the dividing-line be drawn between semiologically-signified notional content (i.e. what is linguistically encoded) and non-semiologically-signified notional content (i.e. what is not encoded but still communicated). This highlights a dimension of embodiment that concerns the basic design architecture of human language itself: the ineludable fact that the fundamental relation on which language is based is the association between a mind-engendered meaning and a bodily produced sign. It is argued that linguistic analysis often disregards this fact and treats meaning on the level of the sentence or the construction, rather than on that of the lower-level linguistic items where the linguistic sign is stored in a stable, permanent, and direct relation with its meaning outside of any particular context. Building linguistic analysis up from the ground level provides it with a more solid foundation and increases its explanatory power.

Ibrahim, Ayman S. Conversion to Islam. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197530719.001.0001.

Abstract (sommario):
Why did non-Muslims convert to Islam during Muhammad’s life and under his immediate successors? How did Muslim historians portray these conversions? Why did their portrayals differ significantly? To what extent were their portrayals influenced by their time of writing, religious inclinations, and political affiliations? These are the fundamental questions that drive this study. Relying on numerous works, including primary sources from over a hundred classical Muslim historians, this investigation is the first scholarly study to detect, trace, and analyze conversion themes in early Muslim historiography. It emphasizes how classical Muslims remembered conversion, and how they valued and evaluated aspects of it. This study examines the interplay between history and historiography, as it scrutinizes the influence of religio-political and sociocultural contexts on historical narratives. While this study focuses on historical accounts, its conclusions are contrasted with recent findings of non-historiographical research on conversion to Islam. Readers will join an intellectual journey, exploring numerous early Muslim sources and wrestling with critical observations regarding the sources’ reliability. They will question whether Islam actually spread by the sword and deduce unconventional meanings of conversion. They will unearth the hidden link between historical narratives and historians’ religious sympathies and political agendas. This study leads readers through a complex body of literature, provides insights regarding historical context, and creates a vivid picture of conversion to Islam as early Muslim historians sought to depict it.

Abstract (sommario):
With “Phantoms,” the second solo piano piece from her Four Sketches op. 15 (1892), American composer Amy Beach adopts a “strategic” approach to tonality that manipulates formal, harmonic, and linear closure. The analysis presented in this chapter demonstrates, through a close reading of the phrase structure, harmonic vocabulary, textures, motivic design, and voice leading of the piece, Beach’s aptitude for tonal obfuscation, which she employs to convey a sense of the epigraph she borrowed from Victor Hugo: “Toutes fragiles fleurs, sitôt que nées” (“Such fragile flowers, as soon as they are born”). The melody she constructs is indeed fragile, floating as it does over various “misharmonizations,” and including not one but two gaps in its descent from ‸5 to the tonic. By avoiding explicit melodic reference to ‸4 and ‸2 and making abundant use of registral coupling, Beach compellingly captures the ethereal quality of the flowers described by Hugo.

Walter, Anke. Time in Ancient Stories of Origin. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198843832.001.0001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Greek and Roman stories of origin, or aetia, provide a fascinating window onto ancient conceptions of time. Aetia, which pervade ancient literature at all its stages, are inherently about time: they connect the past with the present by telling us which aspects of the past survive “even now” or “ever since then”. Yet while the standard aetiological formulae remain surprisingly stable over time, the understanding of time that lies behind stories of origin undergoes profound changes. By studying a broad range of texts and by closely examining select stories of origin from archaic Greece, Hellenistic Greece, Augustan Rome, and early Christian literature, this book traces the changing forms of stories of origin and the underlying changing attitudes to time: to the interaction of the time of gods and men, to historical time, to change and continuity, as well as to a time beyond the present one. The book provides a model of how to analyse the temporal construction of aetia, by combining close attention to detail with a view towards the larger temporal agenda of each work. In the process, the book provides new insights both into some of the best-known aetiological works of antiquity (e.g. by Hesiod, Callimachus, Vergil, Ovid) and lesser-known ones (e.g. Ephorus, Prudentius, Orosius). Aetia, it is shown, do not merely convey factual information about the continuity of the past, but they implicate the present in ever new complex messages about time.

Macak, Kubo. Internationalized Armed Conflicts in International Law. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198819868.001.0001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This book examines and analyses the concept, the process, and the consequences of conflict internationalization from the perspective of international law. In a world defined by the twin forces of globalization and fragmentation, very few armed conflicts remain isolated from foreign involvement and confined to the territory of one state. Instead, many begin as internal conflicts that gradually acquire international characteristics of varying degree and nature. This holds true for nearly all major conflicts that have shaped the post-Cold War era: ex-Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Ukraine, Syria, Yemen, and so on. Accordingly, this book searches for the tipping points that convert non-international armed conflicts into international armed conflicts. On that basis, it argues for a specific conceptualization of ‘internationalized armed conflict’ in international law, understood to comprise prima facie non-international armed conflicts, whose legal nature has transformed, thus triggering the applicability of the law of international armed conflict to them. The book then puts forward a comprehensive catalogue of modalities of the process of internationalization that includes outside intervention, state dissolution, and recognition of belligerency. Turning to the consequences of internationalization, the book highlights that the intra-state origin of internationalized conflicts provides for an uneasy match with many of the precepts of the law of international armed conflict, which has historically evolved as a regulatory framework for inter-state wars. Of those, the regulation of combatancy and the law of belligerent occupation are where the principal legal questions lie and which are examined in depth in this book.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Why do governments in some developing countries implement international standards, while others do not? Focusing on the politics of bank regulation, this book develops a new framework to explain regulatory interdependence between countries in the core and the periphery of the global financial system. Drawing on in-depth analysis of eleven countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, it shows how financial globalization generates strong reputational and competitive incentives for developing countries to converge on international standards. Regulatory interdependence is generated by relations between regulators, politicians, and banks within developing countries, and international actors including investors, peer regulators, and international financial institutions. We explain why it is that some configurations of domestic politics and forms of integration into global finance generate convergence with international standards, while other configurations lead to divergence. This book contributes to our understanding of the ways in which governments and firms in the core of global finance powerfully shape regulatory politics in the periphery, and the ways in which peripheral governments and firms manoeuvre within the constraints and opportunities created by financial globalization.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter integrates three approaches to the question of why successful identities—individual and organizational—generally involve a balance between conformity to others’ practices and differentiation from them. An entertaining model is employed to highlight the limitations of the “optimal distinctiveness” and the “different audiences” approaches. A third approach—“two-stage valuation”—is then shown to address these limitations. It is also demonstrated that this approach provides a general foundation for understanding the balance between conformity and differentiation. The advantages of this framework are (a) parsimony, as it requires no unnecessary behavioral assumptions; (b) generality, as it applies at both the individual and organizational levels of analysis and is capable of incorporating the distinctive observations of the other two approaches; and (d) extensibility, as it is capable of illuminating outstanding puzzles, such as why closely resembling others may sometimes convey legitimacy but may sometimes be a problematic sign of inauthenticity.

Southgate, Laura. ASEAN Resistance to Sovereignty Violation. Policy Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1332/policypress/9781529202205.001.0001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This book investigates the history of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) stance on external intervention in regional affairs. It asks when has ASEAN state resistance to sovereignty challenges succeeded, and when have they failed? ASEAN’s history of (non)resistance is understood in terms of a realist theoretical logic, focusing on the relationship between an ASEAN ‘vanguard state’ and selected external powers. A ‘vanguard state’ is defined as an ASEAN state that comes to the fore of the Association when it has vital interests at stake that it wishes to pursue. Whilst a state’s interests may vary, vital interests relate to state survival and the preservation of state sovereignty. Once a vanguard state has come to prominence, it will perform two major functions, which reflect an external balancing logic. The vanguard state will actively seek out an external power whose interests align with its own, and will seek to portray a united ASEAN front in support of its interests. Using case study analysis and drawing on a large amount of previously unanalysed material, this book contends that when an ASEAN vanguard state has interests that converge with those of an external power, it has an active and substantial role in resisting sovereignty violation.

Abstract (sommario):
Heroism is usually associated with great deeds, and heroes are regarded as superior and powerful individuals who take action. This opinion has dominated Western tradition since ancient times. At the same, the ability to bide one’s time was and is equally classed as a heroic quality because it is an ‘inner form of action’ (M. Weber). Fabius Cunctator was heroicised for tactically biding his time during the Second Punic War, as were the front-line soldiers during the First World War, who held out for so long in the trenches. Moreover, the Christian notion of salvation, the heroic, eremitical act of waiting in this life for the next, or the prophetic, messianic constellations of the 1920s also spring to mind in this context. The essays collected in this book examine ‘heroic waiting’ as a literary phenomenon. They not only provide in-depth analyses of how biding one’s time is conveyed as a heroic act, but also focus above all on how it is staged. The book’s introduction, which was written by the editors, is based on a collective set of descriptive tools with which ‘heroic waiting’ can be defined and understood in terms of its typological characteristics on the one hand and as a relational structure on the other.

Abstract (sommario):
Many studies of the monster and monstrosity have focused on women, and most do so (at least in part) in relation to some type of visual culture. However, few have examined the appearance of monstrous women in comics in particular. Like horror films, sequential art has an abundance of monsters and fantastical beings. No less important to this volume than the sheer abundance of monsters within comics is the fact that they are often marked by gender, race, and disability in complex ways. Each chapter provides a text-critical analysis of a particular (or perhaps several) comic, manga, or graphic novel in order to ask how the monster makes meaning within the text(s) and, what it means for the monster to be coded as a woman. Further, building on the work of monster studies scholars, such as Jeffrey Jerome Cohen, Barbara Creed, Margrit Shildrick, and Julia Kristeva, each author also reflects on the various ways their analysis of the comic, and the meaning made by the monstrous woman therein, connects to the broader cultural context in question. In order to further converse with existing scholarship on monsters, on gender, and to further enable dialogue between chapters, this book is organized along a number of common themes: power, embodiment, child-bearing, childhood, and performance. Women are often called monsters. With this collection, authors use comics to try to figure out what that monstrosity means and what women, scholars, and comics have done and should do about it.

Gisborne, Nikolas, e Andrew Hippisley, a cura di. Defaults in Morphological Theory. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198712329.001.0001.

Abstract (sommario):
Default-based analyses of linguistic data are most prevalent in morphological descriptions because morphology is pervaded by idiosyncrasy and irregularity, and defaults allow for a representation of the facts by construing regularity not as all or nothing but as a matter of degree. Defaults manifest themselves in a variety of ways in a group of morphological theories that have received much attention in the last few years, and whose main ideas and claims have been recently consolidated as important monographs. In May 2012 a workshop was convened at the University of Kentucky in Lexington to show-case default usage in four prominent theories of morphology. The presenters were key proponents of the theories, in most cases a theory’s author. The role of defaults was outlined in Construction Morphology, Network Morphology, Paradigm Function Morphology, and Word Grammar. With reference to these theories, as well as the lexical syntactic framework of HPSG, this book addresses questions about the role of defaults in the lexicon, including: (1) Does a defaults-based account of language have implications for the architecture of the grammar, particularly the proposal that morphology is an autonomous component? (2) How does a default differ from the canonical or prototypical in morphology? (3) Do defaults have a psychological basis? (4) How do defaults help us understand language as a sign-based system that is flawed, where the one to one association of form and meaning breaks down in the morphology?

Abstract (sommario):
This book lays out and explores a new ‘metaperformative’ approach to scenes of divine viewing, counsel, and intervention in the Iliad. Critics have often described the gods’ activities in terms of attendance at a ‘show’ and have suggested analogies to theatre and sports, but have done little to investigate the particular strategies by which the poet conveys the impression of gods attending a live, staged event. This book’s analysis of those strategies points to a ‘metaperformative’ significance to the motif of divine viewing: the poet is using the gods, in part, to model and thereby manipulate the ongoing dynamics of performance and live reception. The gods, like the external audience, are capable of a variety of emotional responses to events at Troy; notably pleasure, pity—and also great aloofness. By performing the speeches of the provocative, infuriating, yet ultimately obliging Zeus, the poet at key moments both challenges his listeners to take a stake in the continuation of the performance, and presents a sophisticated critique of possible responses to his poem. The result is a conception of epic not only as song that will transcend time through re-performance—as famously evinced in the Iliad’s meditations on kleos—but also as raw spectacle, in which audience ‘participation’, and complicity, magnify and complicate the emotional impact of the devastation at Troy.

Abstract (sommario):
This book is a study of the historical development and impact of John Calvin’s doctrine of baptismal efficacy. The primary questions it addresses are (1) whether Calvin taught an “instrumental” doctrine of baptism, according to which the external sign of the sacrament serves as a means or instrument to convey the spiritual realities it signifies, and (2) whether Calvin’s teaching on baptismal efficacy remained constant throughout his lifetime or underwent significant change. Secondarily, the work also examines whether such spiritual blessings, in Calvin’s view, are conferred only in adult (believer) baptism or also in the baptism of infants, and what impact Calvin’s doctrine of baptismal efficacy had on the Reformed confessional tradition that followed him. The book examines all of Calvin’s writings on baptism—his Institutes, commentaries on Scripture, catechisms, polemical writings, and consensus documents—chronologically through five stages of his life and then analyzes the doctrine of baptismal efficacy in eight of the major Reformed confessions and catechisms from the age of confessional codification. It concludes that Calvin did indeed hold to an instrumental view of baptism; that this doctrine underwent change and development over the course of his life but not to the extent that some in the past have suggested; that his view of the efficacy of infant baptism was consistent with his doctrine of baptism in general; and that versions of Calvin’s teaching can be found in many, though not all, of the major Reformed confessional documents of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Rigolio, Alberto. Christians in Conversation. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190915452.001.0001.

Abstract (sommario):
Christians in Conversation: A Guide to Late Antique Dialogues in Greek and Syriac deals with a particular form of writing by Christians in late antiquity, the prose dialogue. To study late antique dialogues means to recognize that the dialogue form, notably employed by Plato and Aristotle, did not exhaust itself with the philosophical schools of Classical and Hellenistic Greece, but emerged transformed and reinvigorated in the religiously diverse world of late antiquity. The Christians’ use of the dialogue form within religious debate resulted in a burgeoning activity of composition of prose dialogues, which often opposed a Christian and a Jew, a Christian and a pagan, a Christian and a Manichaean, an Orthodox and a heretic, or, later, a Christian and a Muslim. The present work offers the first comprehensive analysis of Christian dialogues in Greek and in Syriac from the earliest examples in the second century up to the end of the sixth century. It shows that several Christian authors chose the dialogue form to convey fundamental theological views, and argues that dialogues were intended as tools of opinion formation in late antique society, thus opening up this vast strand of literature to the interests of the cultural and intellectual historians. Most Christian dialogues are little studied, and often in isolation, but they vividly evoke the religious debates of the time, and embody the cultural conventions and refinements that late antique men and women expected from such debates.
