Abstract (sommario):

After two lost decades of economic stagnation and faced with rising neighbors such as South Korea and China, soft power has been touted by politicians and academics alike as a means for Japan to maintain its global profile and influence. "Soft power" is a concept coined by Harvard professor Joseph Nye to maintain American preponderance in the post-Cold War era, but what does it mean in the Japanese context? This paper suggests that there are three discernible faces to Japanese soft power. First, there is a conventional emphasis on promoting pop cultural assets overseas such as manga (comic books); anime (animated cartoons) and cosplay (costume play). Second,Japan may also seek to project influence by aligning with international norms on freedom of maritime navigation or combating climate change. Third is a somewhat more unconventional use of Japanese military assets in a non-threatening manner to attract others into supporting Tokyo's policies through, for example, providing humanitarian assistance. The paper concludes by evaluating the impact and limitations of this Japanese traid in attaining desired goals through soft power.

Abstract (sommario):

This research discusses persona EMIYA in the anime fate/stay night unlimited blade works by Takahiro Miura. The purpose of this research is to describe the persona of EMIYA's character such as the source, development, and persona transformation experienced by EMIYA. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The data collection technique used the note-taking technique. The theory used is Carl Gustav Jung's personality theory regarding persona archetypes. The results of EMIYA's persona analysis brought destruction upon itself. EMIYA is too busy with his own world, following his own impulses, hopes, desires, and fantasies to realize his ambition, the idealism of the hero of justice. EMIYA also over-identifies with persona, adapts and satisfies the social world such as helping people around him with the idealism of his justice hero persona so that he believes that the image he builds is his true personality which ends in his regrets because reality, destiny slaps, the situation he faces changes.

ResumoDesde a década de 2000, o mercado de mangás no Brasil conta com um relevante fandom consumidor que discute e organiza eventos. Contudo, com o advento da internet, as opiniões e ações destes fãs passaram a interferir, de forma cada vez mais incisiva, nas decisões de mercado de grandes editoras. Narrativas que antes dependiam de grandes emissoras e editoras para adentrar o mercado nacional, hoje são acessíveis graças à livre tradução e distribuição de fãs no espaço virtual. Este artigo resulta de uma breve investigação de viés exploratório e alicerçada no levantamento de dados bibliográficos sobre esta nova dimensão na distribuição de mangás. O evento para fãs Anime Friends e as atividades do blog MBB Anikenkai ilustram e confirmam a existência deste novo cenário. Abre-se um novo horizonte de investigações: o da análise da distribuição dos mangás e das suas diferentes faces midiáticas, levando em conta a interação entre fãs e editoras de mangá.Palavras-chaveMangás. The present study addresses the status and use of irony in Japanese popular culture by closely examining its’ cultural variations on a corpus consisting of ironic utterances and situations from three popular culture media: Japanese drama, anime, and manga. While it is likely that Western popular culture abounds in ironic aesthetics and standpoints, the concept of “irony” faces cultural reconstruction within Japanese culture and society, a fact easily reflected in national media and cinematographic productions. In such cases, the cultural and linguistic distance between Japanese and English, and the striking difference, which exists between these two geographical and cultural contexts, increase the challenge interposed by the understanding and interpreting of irony. Moreover, on a conversational level, ironizing one’s communication partner is considered socially unacceptable and penalised accordingly. It stands against the much-expected politeness and traditional Japanese concepts such as “honne” and “tatemae,” which, if preserved, can create harmony in communication. In conclusion, the ambiguous definition of irony, together with the negative perception and reluctance of Japanese people towards its usage, has contributed to frequently branding irony strictly as a Western phenomenon. However, as the present research attempts to demonstrate, the usage of irony in Japanese popular culture embraces multifarious approaches, and it extends to reach the borders of semantics.

Introduction: According to criminal codes of most Western countries, possessing, producing and disseminating of fictional paedopornography is a crime. In light of these laws, the shotacon/lolicon (popular and widely available Japanese animations or comic books showing minors in a sexual context) seems to deserve special mention. There have been several convictions for violations of these laws, however, the methodology of a depicted person’s age estimation is still unestablished. The aim of this study was to assess the suitability of anthropometrical prediction of age to the analysis of characters animated in the Japanese style. Material and methods: The metric (distance between facial landmarks) and non-metric (type of chin shape) features of 173 animated characters’ faces were obtained. Material was collected from 90 most popular Japanese anime series. Measurements were conducted in ImageJ software. The correlations of age and standardized measurements: en-ex, en-en, eye height, pu-prn, pu-sto, pu-gn were examined. The chin shape was described by three independent ‘judges’. Results and conclusions: Correlations for pu-prn, pu-sto, pu-gn and eye height in females and in all males were statistically significant. Age prediction was made using linear regression equations. Good prediction (± 1 year) was obtained for 44% males and 17% females. Prediction within the acceptable range (± 2 years) was achieved for 23% of males and 18% of females. In total, the prediction with an error of no more than ± 2 years was obtained for 67% of males and 35% from females, which is comparable to the results obtained in the study of real children. Moreover, triangular or rounded chin shape was significantly more frequent in boys aged 10–12 years, and square in older boys 16–18 years. Current research provides a basis for developing a methodology for assessing the age of animated characters. There is a need for further research in this area.

This research discusses on the issue of reducing Indonesian migrant workers by cultivating local and natural sources. Data were collected from interview and participative observation. This is a case study based on qualitative approach. In Kudus, some Indonesian migrant workers faced problems in the countries where they worked. In some cases families are lost contact with the workers, some workers were sent back home dying or in critical health condition while some other are sent back home in a coffin. Those who came back healthy faced other problems such as adultery, divorce, or father raped his daughters. There are also who came back in a good health and wealth. Discussing this matter, the government together with the society need to identify and cultivate local sources to help and empower those immigrant workers to find and establish their economic sources in their home town.

Abstract (sommario):

O objeto deste artigo é o conceito aristotélico de verdade no domínio da intelecção, conforme o De Anima. O problema que se apresenta neste conceito diz respeito à oposição entre a verdade e a falsidade no âmbito dos pensamentos divisíveis e à atribuição única da verdade a pensamentos indivisíveis. Para isso, recorre-se à Metafísica IX, 10, em que a verdade, considerada em si mesma, só se encontra em seres separados de outros seres, à medida que a verdade em oposição ao falso só ocorre em uma relação efetiva entre seres distintos. Também, recorre-se ao estatuto da verdade segundo o De Interpretatione, em que a oposição entre verdade e falsidade se encontra na composição e divisão dos termos da linguagem. Portanto, será tratado aqui como Aristóteles pensou uma concepção de verdade que se comporta em relação a referentes de natureza distinta e como este aspecto influi na constituição de objetos do pensamento.

Abstract (sommario):

Background. This issue is important today due to the growth of production in film industry and the necessity to translate Asian animes and doramas which are very popular among the Russian audience. Purpose. The difficulties which a translator faces while working with subtitles to Asian films are analyzed. Material and methods. The article studies the Netflix subtitle styleguide and doramas and animes, their distinctive features, the most famous directors and peculiarities of creating subtitles to them. It is the descriptive method that was used. Results. Subtitles are in demand nowadays and this type of audiovisual translation is more economically advantageous than dubbing or voice-over. While creating subtitles one should consider a number of technical requirements, which lead to necessity to apply linguistic transformations. Given the lack of translators who know Asian languages the subtitles are translated from English into Russian. While working the translator should keep the consistency of terms and proper names, consider cultural features, transliterate names correctly. Practical implications. The results received can be used in teaching audiovisual translation. The results can be of use for audiovisual translators.

Abstract (sommario):

The first book of the De anima contains Aristotle’s psychological doxography. It is usually divided into two sections: the mere listing of the previous theories on the soul (I.2) and their critical examination (I.3–5). Despite such apparent neatness, various discrepancies emerge and the structure of the doxography remains obscure. To account for such problems and for the general agenda of the psychological doxography, I shall propose a tripartite model, arguing that Aristotle’s grouping of his predecessors’ theories is based on three criteria (motion, cognition and incorporeality), all of which are to be referred back to one overarching criterion (primacy). After collecting some textual evidence in favour of this interpretation, I shall deal with an apparent difficulty faced by the suggested model, namely chapter 4. Based on the results thus reached, I conclude that the doxography of De anima i significantly contributes to the development of Aristotle’s own psychological theory and to defining its role within his wider philosophical project.

In the present article we discuss three studies aimed at better understanding elitism in the context of fan groups. The studies assess different facets of elitism, predictors of elitism and the potential outcomes associated with holding elitist beliefs. The survey studies were conducted on members of three distinct fan groups: furries (fans of media featuring anthropomorphized animal characters), bronies (adult fans of the television series My Little Pony) and anime fans (fans of Japanese animation). Elitism was found to include both self-inflation and other-derogation and is predicted by two components of fan identity (fanship and fandom). Elitism was also significantly associated with pro-gatekeeping attitudes and behaviours. Practical and theoretical implications for fan culture are discussed. We also discuss the limitations of the studies and their ability to contribute to a discussion about creating inclusive fan spaces.

This article aims to analyze the important part of the poetry of Anica Savić Rebac which reveals the image of a woman who emerges from her personal, poetic garden, and transforms in front of her reader not into a silent figure, but into the one who owns her authentic voice. The article emphasizes the cultural and historical importance of the language of flowers and its phallogocentric use for such a long time. The language of flowers became a particularly important way of expressing female inner voices with female authors such as Anica Savić Rebac. The first section draws attention to the poetry of Savić Rebac and the hardships she faced on her creative path - some of her male colleagues tried to sabotage the printing of her poetic work. The theoretical views of Anne Carson and Cindy Moore are applied in analyzing the authentic female voice and its importance in Savic Rebac's poems. The poetess wrote her poetry at the beginning of the twentieth century, and her contemporaries were Desanka Maksimović, Milica Kostić Selem, Isidora Sekulić, Jela Spiridonović Savić, and others. However, Anica Savić Rebac remained invisible for a while. For instance, Miloš Crnjanski thought her poetry was worthless and did not recommend it to a well-known publisher in Belgrade. At the end of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first century, the poetical work of Anica Savić Rebac underwent fairer readings, interpretations, and evaluation, due to the great efforts of certain writers, critics, historians (Nada Marinković, Svetlana Slapšak, Ljiljana Vuletić, Žarka Svirčev, Laura Barna). The results of this analysis indicate that Anica Savić Rebac creates a new meaning for flowers and herself without the fear of the possible consequences in the patriarchal world. By using the language of flowers, the poetess offers a feminist reinterpretation of different ancient myths. Of great importance for understanding the poetic voice of Anica Savić Rebac were the biography of Anica Savić Rebac written by Ljiljana Vuletić in 2002, as well as the feminist and psychoanalytic reading of her poetry by Žarka Svirčev from 2018.

Four types of gums were developed (Strawberry & Anise, Strawberry & Mint, Raspberry & Mint, Blueberry & Mint) and their texture was evaluated through two types of tests (compression with a 75 mm probe and puncture with a 2 mm probe) allowing to calculate several textural properties. The results showed some differences between the two faces of the jelly gums analysed, i.e. on the top and on the bottom. As for the compression test, the Strawberry & Anise gums were among the softer (25.6 N) and with lower resilience (36.3%) and chewiness (16.9 N), despite being more adhesive (−0.5 N s). As for the puncture test, the sample Strawberry & Mint had the highest adhesiveness (−2.0 N s) but the lowest stickiness (−0.38 N). Additionally, very strong correlations were encountered between some of the properties studied (r = 0.861 or r = 0.822), and the factor analysis allowed defining three factors, the first clearly associated with the puncture properties while the other two were related to the compression properties. This work allowed concluding that the jelly gums presented different textural properties, particularly when assessed through different types of measurements. Hence, the use of different types of tests for texture analysis is recommended, since the results are complementary. This is relevant when developing food products intended for industrial production and commercialization.

Aristotle thought that phantasia (imagination), perception, and mind were equally important. In one of his works, Aristotle described imagination as “that virtue of which an image occurs in us.” (De Anima iii 3 – 428aa1-2) The notion of what Cicero called “the mind’s eye” has recently been researched quite extensively as a “transdisciplinary project” in a solid and elegant collection of essays entitled Imagination and Art: Explorations in Contemporary Theory (2020) edited by Keith Moser and Ananta Ch. Sukla, who worked with an eclectic group of international researchers to compile a comprehensive study of the various facets of imagination. Organized in nine parts and presenting 38 essays, this collection is the most comprehensive contribution to the contemporary concept of imagination to date.

O trabalho procura enfrentar o tema do julgamento moral e sua relação com ações políticas e jurídicas através da filosofia de Aristóteles. De acordo com sua Metafísica da forma e matéria, exploro a interpretação aristotélica da constituição psíco-material do homem, exposta no De anima. Com base nessas considerações iniciais, a “obra do homem” é estudada no horizonte da Ética a Nicômacos. As virtudes éticas e intelectuais formarão o juízo moral do homem, na medida em que ele gradualmente tome posse de sua alma racional, a medida especificamente humana. Embora uma qualidade da alma, o agir moral não pode, contudo, simplesmente negligenciar as circunstâncias corpóreas da vida humana. Finalmente, a Política tematiza o contexto sócio-político-jurídico (as várias formas de constituição e suas bases sócio-econômicas) em que a vida moral alcança seu pleno florescimento ou se defronta com obstáculos que a desviam de sua estrutura racional.Abstract: Taking as a guide Aristotle’s philosophy, this paper seeks to address the issue of moral judgement and its relationship with political and juridical actions. According to the philosopher’s Metaphysics of form and matter, I investigate the Aristotelian idea of the psycho-material constitution of man, as presented in De anima. Based on the above mentioned considerations, “the function of man” is studied within the horizon of the Nicomachean Ethics. Moral and intellectual virtues form man’s moral judgement as he gradually gets possession of his rational soul, the human measure par excellence. Although it is a quality of the soul, the moral deed cannot, however, neglect the corporeal condition of human life. Finally, Aristotle’s Politics deals with the social, political and juridical context (the several forms of constitution and their socio-economic bases) in which moral life reaches its full unfolding or faces obstacles that deviate it from its rational structure.
