AbstractStudies have indicated that built environments affect all aspects of human life such as emotion, perception, behavior, health, and well-being (Cooper et al. 2011). Built environments are formed from the combination and juxtaposition of visible and invisible environmental variables. In recent years, common techniques such as virtual reality, augmented reality, digital twins, and artificial intelligence have enabled researchers in the field of architecture and urban design to simulate environmental conditions to investigate the impacts of environmental variables on humans. However, the studies conducted in this field of human comfort are mostly focused on the impact of environmental variables such as form, temperature, humidity, and sound, and in fewer studies, up-to-date methods and technologies have been used to simulate and investigate the impact of smell on humans. Most of the studies that have investigated the effect of ambient smell on humans, carried out in the discipline of architecture and urban design, have used traditional tools and methods (questionnaire, interview, observation) rather than advanced technology and tools drawing on neuroscientific knowledge and technique to measure the effectiveness of the ambient smell on human. They have used unmasked scents or real-world environments rather than being able to simulate environmental conditions. This article highlights the significance and necessity of employing simulation methods to investigate the impact of environmental smells on humans. Additionally, it presents the methodology of an experiment for studying the effect of indoor environment smells (with a case study of an office environment in the initial phases) on human emotions, utilizing a mixed-method approach. Analysis of some parts of the data from this experiment showed that exposure to the fragrance of the jasmine flower pleasant (flower) and the odor of the rotten orange peel (unpleasant) can cause changes in the electroencephalography (EEG) power across different bands among participants.

AbstractOur present era asks architecture to confront new questions; visions and scenarios that project social, economic, and environmental issues toward that particular intersection between the green transition and the prefiguration of housing solutions for the city of tomorrow. In this drive toward a sociocultural renewal, digital architectural tools play a crucial role in the optimization of resources, customization of building components, and promotion of participative designing-building processes. As an innovative technique of digital fabrication, Additive Manufacturing makes this mass production economically accessible, also on-site, and using local materials. While the topic of a ‘home for everyone’ has started to be addressed, experiments and applications often focus primarily on technical aspects. To be understood, controlled, and aimed at truly improving quality of life, these innovations require a reflection on the paradigms that inspire digital design. Can the adoption of 3D Printing change design theory and the ways of conceiving the spaces of the habitat of tomorrow? More in detail, is it already possible to identify some particular architectural features? Using a selection of case studies, this paper critically interprets and analyzes these questions. The return of recurring architectural themes—the concept of instant architecture, the relation between natural–digital ecosystems, or the issue of self-determination—offers different ways of looking at ‘printed’ architecture.

AbstractSeveral analyses and reports on sustainable design are pointing worldwide in the direction of what is known as the ‘Green Building’ approach: an integrated, multi-sectoral approach to the implementation of improvements that aim to increase levels of well-being, social inclusion and long-lasting development in cities, on the basis of most urgent aspects of environmental quality, efficiency and circularity of resources, in a climate change scenario. In Italy, in 2017, the ‘Future City Manifesto’ was launched as part of the initiatives of the Italian General States of the Green Economy in Architecture, aiming at mainstreaming the Green Building approach within the international Green City Network. The objective of this chapter is to present and discuss recent initiatives in the field of sustainable architecture and green economy in Italy, pointing at innovative processes, strategies, methods and tools in a Green Building approach, suitable to activate policy actions and foster significant results as regards future green growth and urban development.

AbstractFor some time, we have been witnessing a series of alarms that warn us that our wealth is leading to an exaggerated and increasing use of energy and resources, as well as the deep and irreversible transformation of natural systems and social inequality, causing a continuous growth of the overall impact of the human species. “Ecology” and “environment” have become the key words of the third millennium: a media bombardment that has helped to overcome the insurmountable barrier of indifference and insensitivity. Everything that has to do with architectural design, from the choice of materials to the technologies used, has been confronted with the term “sustainability,” whose meaning, despite the attempt to place it in a univocal definitional apparatus, always takes on different nuances and meanings. The text defines the complex system of principles that animate architecture today whether those aimed at greater attention to and protection of the health of users and the environment or also concerns social and economic issues when it is proposed as a cultural, social, ecological and economic change necessary to safeguard future generations. Today, we are often witnesses of an inadequacy and poor quality that concerns precisely the aspects of health and safety. The origin of this failure is attributable to attitudes, indifferent to housing needs, easily found in the majority of designers: the environmental scale of the project intended mainly as morpho-typological abstraction, the superficiality in technological choices, and the poor verification of interactions between technical elements and housing needs.

AbstractIn these historic times, when there is a crucial shift in the way we consider the cultural and architectural aspects of learning spaces, it is important to investigate the role this spatial resource plays in the urban context. This, so we can understand the need to break with the outdated ideas about school that are deeply rooted in our society. There is common ground between architecture and pedagogy, a possible dialogue between space and knowledge, which can generate new explorations into the ordinary meaning of educational spaces and landscapes of knowledge, as a chance to expand the concept of inhabiting a space and how that impacts the world, and to devise a new urban condition. By first considering cities as a broad, extended learning space, we provide a chance and an incentive to reflect on the role of spatial design. The city is an important educational tool, since it represents a space of discovery, growth, socialization, tension, conflict and adventure. AbstractOur research focuses on the reutilization of construction materials and how we could foster growth in this sector. It deals with the specific case of the re-use sector around Strasbourg, France, providing a comprehensive overview of the local landscape. Indeed, the research was conducted in partnership with the School of Architecture of Strasbourg, the City of Strasbourg, and an engineering consultant called “BOMA” specialized in circular building. This project is supported by the “Campus des Métiers et des Qualifications Eco-construction et Efficacité Energétique Grand Est”, the Grand Est Region, the “Région Académique Grand Est” and the “Banque des Territoires”. To encourage innovative programs around circular economy, we gave particular attention to analysing feedbacks from pilot projects. In addition to the interview with key local stakeholders, a literature review focusing on assessment of circularity in buildings was carried out. Through a methodology developed in a separate scientific paper, we selected 10 key indicators adapted to the area to measure the circularity of a building, focusing mostly on social, environmental, and economical aspects of the project. Thanks to these indicators, a digital tool was developed to calculate the relevant data concerning the circularity of the project, creating analysed feedback of the construction. Five of those indicators have been implemented in this tool, although suggestions have been made to cover more topics. Moreover, in the future, there is the possibility for it to be transformed into a decision-making tool in order to boost the structuration of the re-use sector around Strasbourg.
