Paz Encina became a public figure in Paraguay after her first film, Hamaca Paraguaya (Paraguayan Hammock, 2006), won major awards and put Paraguayan cinema back on the international map for the first time in decades. In 2012, she was invited to “do something” visual with the Archivos del Terror (Archives of Terror) to mark the twentieth anniversary of the discovery of the heinous archives. Abstract The introduction provides an overview of the historiography and chronology of Stalin’s Great Terror, exploring in particular the “purge of the purgers” or the “Beria Purge.” This purge began at the end of 1938 and targeted select NKVD operatives for arrest and trial, continuing into the war years. Stalin scapegoated these NKVD operatives for the “excesses,” or atrocities, of the Great Terror, a policy that he himself had created. Daughter Zion (Lam 1–2) is often read as a rape victim. Furthermore, and unlike most biblical victims of sexual violence, she has a voice in the text. As a result, there is a pronounced tendency in the scholarship to treat Daughter Zion as an ideal and praiseworthy victim/survivor. However, this representation is both problematic and contradicted by Daughter Zion’s own speech in Lamentations 1–2.
