Abstract (sommario):

Abstract. The proliferation of machine learning applied to 3D computer vision tasks such as object detection has heightened the need for large, high-quality datasets of labeled 3D scans for training and testing purposes. Current methods of producing these datasets require first scanning the environment, then transferring the resulting point cloud or mesh to a separate tool for it to be annotated with semantic information, both of which are time consuming processes. In this paper, we introduce Augmented Annotations, a novel approach to bounding box data annotation that solves the scanning and annotation processes of an environment in parallel. Leveraging knowledge of the user’s position in 3D space during scanning, we use augmented reality (AR) to place persistent digital annotations directly on top of indoor real world objects. We test our system with seven human subjects, and demonstrate that this approach can produce annotated 3D data faster than the state-of-the-art. Additionally, we show that Augmented Annotations can also be adapted to automatically produce 2D labeled image data from many viewpoints, a much needed augmentation technique for 2D object detection and recognition. Finally, we release our work to the public as an open-source iPad application designed for efficient 3D data collection.

Abstract (sommario):
Augmented reality technology is very important in visualizing real objects or concepts. The advancement of computing equipment enables 3D modelling to be performed virtually with relatively easy processes. The appearance of 3D models in virtual is very interesting because it can be combined with interactive multimedia applications so that users can control the course of the application as needed. This augmented reality application has been through process testing, system testing on different mobile devices, and marker testing. The results of process testing indicate that every process on the application goes according to existing model design. Test results show that applications created using the library vuforia and Unity can run well. High school students show that as many as 84.6% who agree with using this application is more interesting than the usual method of learning so as to be able to recognize compound bonding using this application well.

Abstract (sommario):
This account of practice focuses on an augmented Customer Development methodology which the author adopted for a module in a Master’s program in Entrepreneurship at a Swedish business school. The article details the techniques underlying this augmented methodology, and the journey toward its implementation. By conceptualizing “hypotheses” as testable statements linking together blocks of the Business Model Canvas, and “assumptions” as students’ assessments of the contents of each block at the outset of the process, the author provides a more pedagogical as well as a more scientifically and theoretically consistent model. Its effectiveness was assessed through discussing these changes with students who had recently taken the course prior to the author’s appointment as teacher. Adaptations such as this could provide an effective method for teachers who want to update an existing course, or who have recently been appointed to a new course focusing on practical aspects of entrepreneurship. Alternatively, it could help to inspire teachers who wish to augment course content to draw more on coherent theory building and good scientific practice, as are most often suited to Master’s level studies, but without radically altering the lesson plan, syllabus or reading material.

Abstract (sommario):
As augmented reality (AR) technology offers enhanced capabilities for medical simulation training, research is required to understand how to best leverage the strengths of AR. We describe a literature review that will provide the foundation for articulating and testing candidate principles for AR adaptive training design. Our goal is to articulate and test design principles for designing recognition skills training as described in the recognition-primed decision model (Klein, 1997). We identified seminal articles from the the Naturalistic Decision Making literature, and used those to seed a systematic review of the medical education and combat medic training literatures. Findings from the literature review suggest three categories of candidate design principles: 1) fidelity and realism, 2) engagement, and 3) scaffolding. Next steps will include articulating specific design principles and designing a series of studies to test them using the VPIT AR training platform.

Abstract (sommario):
The potential of renewable energy sources is enormous as they can make a major contribution to the future of energy needs. The ocean has a great potential to become a practical and predictable energy source compared to other energy resources such as solar, wind, and nuclear. It offers different sources of energy which can be utilized namely wave, tidal, offshore wind, thermal, and tidal current. Among these sources, marine tidal current has major advantages such as higher power availability and predictability. The main objective of this research work is to design and develop a horizontal axis marine current turbine (HAMCT) that suitable for operating within Malaysian ocean, which has low speed current (0.5 – 1 m/s average). A prototype of augmented diffuser 4-bladed HAMCT applying NACA 0014 was proposed in the current study. The turbine model has 0.666 m diameter, and it was designed to produce as much as power from flowing water current. Model was constructed and tested at Marine Technology Center (MTC) in three conditions, namely, free tow testing, ducted tow testing, and ducted diffuser tow testing in order to predict the power and efficiency of the turbine system. The results showed that the application of duct was significant to concentrate the flow and diffuser arrangement was effective when it was placed behind of the rotor in this condition of low water current speed. The maximum efficiency Cp obtained in the current system was 0.58.

Abstract (sommario):
We investigate the stationarity property of the accumulated Ethernet traffic series. We applied several widely used stationarity and unit root tests, such as Dickey-Fuller test and its augmented version, Phillips-Perron test, as well as the Kwiatkowski-Phillips-Schmidt-Shin test and some of its generalizations, to the assessment of the stationarity of the traffic traces at the different time scales. The quantitative results in this research provide evidence that when the time scale increases, the accumulated traffic series are more stationary.

This paper analyzes financial markets in four developing countries (Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia) using daily returns of their respective stock market indices from January 1, 2006 till December 31, 2016, timeframe which was rarely analyzed. Analysis was conducted by various statistical tests, more precisely serial correlation test, runs test, Augmented Dickey-Fuller test, unit root test, variance ratio test and test of January effect. Results suggest that all analyzed indices, except BelexLine (Serbia), confirm weak form of efficient market hypothesis, while the results on the index BelexLine are mixed and it can be concluded that it does not follow weak form of efficient market hypothesis. Given these results, it can be said that not only passive approach to portfolio management is more appropriate on all indices, except BelexLine, but also additional test and more complex models are necessary in order to confirm this conclusion.

Abstract (sommario):
OBJECTIVEPlacement of a ventricular drain is one of the most common neurosurgical procedures. However, a higher rate of successful placements with this freehand procedure is desirable. The authors’ objective was to develop a compact navigational augmented reality (AR)–based tool that does not require rigid patient head fixation, to support the surgeon during the operation.METHODSSegmentation and tracking algorithms were developed. A commercially available Microsoft HoloLens AR headset in conjunction with Vuforia marker-based tracking was used to provide guidance for ventriculostomy in a custom-made 3D-printed head model. Eleven surgeons conducted a series of tests to place a total of 110 external ventricular drains under holographic guidance. The HoloLens was the sole active component; no rigid head fixation was necessary. CT was used to obtain puncture results and quantify success rates as well as precision of the suggested setup.RESULTSIn the proposed setup, the system worked reliably and performed well. The reported application showed an overall ventriculostomy success rate of 68.2%. The offset from the reference trajectory as displayed in the hologram was 5.2 ± 2.6 mm (mean ± standard deviation). A subgroup conducted a second series of punctures in which results and precision improved significantly. For most participants it was their first encounter with AR headset technology and the overall feedback was positive.CONCLUSIONSTo the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report on marker-based, AR-guided ventriculostomy. The results from this first application are encouraging. The authors would expect good acceptance of this compact navigation device in a supposed clinical implementation and assume a steep learning curve in the application of this technique. To achieve this translation, further development of the marker system and implementation of the new hardware generation are planned. Further testing to address visuospatial issues is needed prior to application in humans.

Abstract (sommario):
An integrated multi-sensor vehicle navigation system is presented that uses a low-cost rate gyro and differential odometry to supplement GPS under signal masking conditions such as tree foliage and urban canyons. Signal masking is often accompanied by extreme multi-path in urban centres with tall buildings, and is also found in wooded areas, enclosed car parks, tunnels, etc. The purpose of the system tested is to provide an accuracy of better than 20 metres almost 100% of the time throughout these interruptions, which are assumed to last up to a few minutes. The equipment used is discussed in detail, as is the method used for filtering measurements. Results are presented from tests carried out in an urban core with relatively long periods of signal loss – up to several minutes over a 6-km test circuit. Tests in urban canyons demonstrate that it is difficult to reach the above specifications with aiding from differential odometry alone due to the high precision of the wheel-scale factor required. However, with the use of a rate gyro and odometry, RMS errors are below 20 metres while availability is nearly 100%. Some of the large deviations could probably be better controlled if GPS multi-path errors were detected before they are allowed to corrupt the filtered solution.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examines the empirical evaluation of the six-factor asset pricing model that augments the Fama-French (2015) five-factor asset pricing model with liquidity factor. Using data from July 2010 to June 2017 of non-financial firms listed on PSX, a 2x3 sort approach is used to construct six left-hand side portfolios, and a 2x2 approach is used to construct right-hand side factors namely, SMB, HML, RMW, CMA, and IML. Time series regression is used to analyze the data to obtained results. The empirical evidence illustrates that in PSX the six-factor model has efficient and better outcomes. Furthermore, the liquidity factor has a strong role in improving the performance of the asset pricing model.

Abstract (sommario):
The value-added method of Haberman is arguably one of the most popular methods to evaluate the quality of subscores. According to the method, a subscore has added value if the reliability of the subscore is larger than a quantity referred to as the proportional reduction in mean squared error of the total score. This article shows how well-known statistical tests can be used to determine the added value of subscores and augmented subscores. The usefulness of the suggested tests is demonstrated using two operational data sets.
