Abstract (sommario):
Background : Factors of education and knowledge mothers of toddlers can influence nutritional status. One effort to improve nutritional status is to increase knowledge about nutrition with nutrition counseling. Knowledge can be influenced by education, people who are highly educated will have broader knowledge and have openness to accept new things. While people with low education tend to have old thinking patterns and are less open to new things including a strong area of customs and traditional. One of the ways to influence the mindset of community with these condition is to use a communication facilitator who is believed to be a role model for the community. So, in this reseach the role of cultural figure was used, so that people receive more material. Objectives : Knowing the influence of educatuin by cultural figure on knowledge of mothers of toddlers about balance nutritional massages. Methods : This Research is pre-experimental study. Which allows testing of changes that occur after the intervention. This research design was used one grup pretest-posttest design. Results : there is an increase in knowledge in the form of difference in scores from pretest to posttest. Based on the result of the analysis using wilcoxon, the influence of education by cultural figure on the knowledge of mothers of toddlers about balance nutritional massages obtained p=0.00 atau p<0.05 meaning there is influence. Abstract (sommario):
The cochleovestibular system is unique in that the peripheral labyrinth subserves two senses, hearing and balance, while the central auditory and vestibular connections diverge within the central nervous system and interact with a multiplicity of information from other sensory inputs. During the seventh decade of life, approximately 40% of people in Great Britain have a significant hearing impairment while in the eighth decade of life this figure rises to 60%. By the age of 65, 35% of people have experienced episodes of dizziness and by the age of 80, two-thirds of women and one-third of men have suffered episodes of vertigo. The elderly population is reported to be increasing by approximately 30% every 20 years and the prevalence of vertigo and hearing loss has been reported to rise in parallel with advancing age.

Abstract (sommario):
In the present study, we have newly developed an artificial bone substitute, which is unidirectional porous β-tricalcium phosphate (UDPTCP). The objective of this study was to examine the effects of high and low porosity substitutes on the balance between new bone formation and β-TCP absorption. Materials and MethodsSix male Japanese white rabbits (weight 3.1–3.5 kg, approximately 18– 21 weeks old) were used for this study. Intra-venous injection of pent barbiturate was administered and the both medial and lateral femoral condyle were exposed. A hole of 5 mm diameter was drilled to a depth of 12 mm in the metaphysis, perpendicular to the long axis of the femur. (Figure 1) Figure 1. Operation procedureIn the next step, a cylindrical UDPTCP test piece measuring 4.8 × 11 mm was implanted in the holes. Within the bone substitute, unidirectional pores ranging from 100 to 300 μm in diameter were made. This unique architecture fostered transmission of fluids and cells into the piece. In this case, the test piece was implanted into the bone perpendicular to the long axis of the femur, and the orientation of uni-directional pore was parallel to the long axis of femur. We prepared two different test pieces having low (69%) and high (74%) porosities. Half of the animals were sacrificed at 3 weeks after the operation and the remaining half at 6 weeks. After removal of the femoral condyle, the specimen was fixed in formalin and demineralized. Specimens were obtained from the central axis of the cylindrical piece as well as from the lateral or medial surfaces at a distance of 4 mm from midline. The histological samples were prepared for H&E and TRAP staining. Results and Discussion At 3 weeks interval, woven bone, which was formed along the wall of the substitute, could be observed by H&E staining in both low and high porosity substitutes (Figure 2a, 2b). In addition, there were osteoblast-like cells lining the newly formed bone surface with extensive capillary formation (Figure 3). At 6 weeks, the β-TCP walls had thinned and bone had matured in both the groups (Figure 4a, 4b). However, in the high-porosity group, β-TCP absorption tended to be more prominent (Figure 4). In addition, it was observed that at the center of the piece, β-TCP absorption was more prominent than that in the 4 mm-area obtained from the lateral or medial surfaces. At 3 and 6 weeks interval, activities of osteoclast-like multinuclear cells were seen on the surface of the pore wall as observed by TRAP staining. Figure 2a. Low porosity (69%) Figure 2b. High porosity (74%) Fig.2a and Fig.2b H&E staining (×12.5) after 3 weeks (center of the specimen)Figure 3. Formation of woven bone with osteoblast-like cells lining the low porosity specimen at 3 weeks. (H&E staining ×400) Figure 4a. Low porosity Figure 4b. High porosityFig.4a and Fig. 4b H&E staining at 6 weeks after implantation. In high porosity, dense-pink staining areas are located at peripheral in the field.Figure 5. TRAP-positive multinuclear cells (black arrow) were seen on the wall and in the capillaries. Conclusions The UDPTCP implanted in the medullar canal of the femur was absorbed by multinuclear cells and quickly replaced by the newly formed bone. Our results are consistent with those of other studies using porous β-TCP [1]. In our preparation, porosity had certain effects on the balance between bone formation and β-TCP absorption. Because of the unique architecture of unidirectional pores within the β-TCP specimen as well as easy formation of capillary network and access to osteoclasts may have accelerated absorption of the substitute. UDPTCP is very promising scaffolding material for bone regeneration. However, optimization of the porosity of UDPTCP in accordance with its application site is necessary before its clinical use. Abstract (sommario):
The growth in the number of wireless devices and applications underscores the need for characterizing and mitigating interference induced problems such as distortion and blocking. A typical interference scenario involves the detection of a small amplitude signal of interest (SOI) in the presence of a large amplitude interfering signal; it is desirable to attenuate the interfering signal while preserving the integrity of SOI and an appropriate dynamic range. If the frequency of the interfering signal varies or is unknown, an adaptive notch function must be applied in order to maintain adequate attenuation. This work explores the performance space of a phase cancellation technique used in implementing the desired notch function for communication systems in the 1-3 GHz frequency range. A system level model constructed with MATLAB and related simulation results assist in building the theoretical foundation for setting performance bounds on the implemented solution and deriving hardware specifications for the RF notch subsystem devices. Simulations and measurements are presented for a Low Noise Amplifer (LNA), voltage variable attenuators, bandpass filters and phase shifters. Ultimately, full system tests provide a measure of merit for this work as well as invaluable lessons learned. The emphasis of this project is the on-wafer LNA measurements, dependence of IC system performance on mismatches and overall system performance tests. Where possible, predictions are plotted alongside measured data. The reasonable match between the two validates system and component models and more than compensates for the painstaking modeling efforts. Most importantly, using the signal to interferer ratio (SIR) as a figure of merit, experimental results demonstrate up to 58 dB of SIR improvement. This number represents a remarkable advancement in interference rejection at RF or microwave frequencies.

Abstract (sommario):
The two case studies concern an approach of the strategic dashboard of a hospital and the reorganization of an IT department in a services company. We have, in this research, analyzed the brakes which appear in the technological and managerial change approaches. In the first study case, we have showed how the Balanced Scorecard model can be adapted to pilot a projects program and to promote a cooperative way of working, under the condition of an evolution of the managers role. In the second case we have shown how the quality approaches lock themselves in a counter-productive logical of quality-conformity which is not due to a lack of training or implication. In the both cases we have noticed that the insufficiency of methodological capacity of the managers strengthens their resistance to change and their difficulties in complex situation We have noticed that the organizational resistance express itself in two times : first level difficulties, nomopathic drifts, appear as a methodological impoverishment of the choosen model, then the corrective actions are followed by second level difficulties who form a phenomena of computo-cogitational deviancy, a kind of organizational resistance who transforms the awaited final state to a hybrid final state. These methodological grants, after a historical analysis of the evolution of quality concepts then of the evolution of the managerial roles, succeeded to meso level reports joining the macro-economic level (financial domination in companies, numeric revolution, bureaucratic revival) to the micro-economic level in companies (paradoxical orders, juridical transformation of society and generalized conformity). A last, several modellings are proposed, in particular the cyclic concept of information-value, and the three-pole figure of the engineer-strategist, towards the sketch of a future model of management of intangibles

Abstract (sommario):
Thousands of business failures end every year, which leads to consequences for both the company itself, stakeholders and society. The need to be able to detect warning signals before the bankruptcy is an actuality and the need to at least bate the negative consequences which follows due to the business ceases is huge. Swedish auditors have, according to the law, an obligation to evaluate a company’s going concern status. They also have the obligation to do a listing in the audit report if the company has a lack of capital. The going concern warning is the auditors warning signal for stakeholders and the governments warning signal is the requirement of balance sheet for liquidation purposes when a company has a lack of capital. Previous studies in the field has focused on financial warning signals and the reasons why the auditors’ accuracy in issuing the going concern warnings varies. This study focuses on going concern warnings and the listing about balance sheet for liquidations purposes. The purpose of the study is to identify the existence of going concern warnings and to increase the insight into the non-financial bases behind a going concern warning. The method of the study is of a quantitative nature and examined the last three audit reports of all companies which business failure ended in 2018. The content in the audit reports were studied to find going-concern warnings and listings about balance sheet for liquidation purposes, this information was later the basis for summaries, calculation and analyses. The study indicates that the presence of a listing regarding balance sheet for liquidation purposes are more frequent than the going-concern warnings from the auditor. The financial reasons behind a going concern warning is more frequent than the non-financial reasons. Going concern warnings and listing of balance sheet for liquidation purposes are in some cases visible as early as three years before the business ceases.

Abstract (sommario):
Article 10 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights is devoted to the freedom of expression, which includes freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas. Article 8 of the Convention protects private and family life, home, correspondence of every individual. By implementing one Conventional right a problem of other right’s protection often occurs. It is a matter of great relevance while implementing Article 10 of the Convention which very often conflicts with Article 8 of the Convention. The fundamental principle which European Court of Human Rights invokes in his case- law is based on the view that freedom of expression which is guaranteed in Article 10 of the Convention, cannot violate the right to respect for one’s private life. European Court of Human Rights has not set down particular limits of the private life’s protection and freedom of expression. It means that in each case the Court has to examine the existing situation and its circumstances. So the principle of “interest balance” has to be applied while implementing Articles 8 and 10 of the Convention in practice. It is essential to find the “reasonable balance” and to decide, which right guaranteed under the Convention will have the priority over another in each case. Firstly, the Court has to analyze these criterions: whether the freedom of expression satisfy the public’s interest to get particular information about certain facts or situation, whether this public’s... In Art and Visual Perception - A psychology of the Creative Eye, Rudolf Arnheim said “Shape seems to influence weight. The regular shape of simple geometrical figures makes them look heavier. This effect can be observed in abstract painting , notable some of Kandinsky’ s works, in which circles or square provide remarkably strong accents within compositions of less definable shapes. Compactness - that is, the degree to which mass is concentrated around its center also seems to produce weight. Taken from the Graves test, shows a relatively small circle counterweighing a larger rectangle and triangle. Vertically oriented forms seem to be heavier than oblique one. Most of these rules, however; await verification by exact experiment.” The present researchers aimed to examine such claim and investigate its validity among present day Taiwanese respondents. Literature review, questionnaire and picture analysis were employed in the study. It was found that Arnheim’s particular observation was not strongly supported by the result of the present investigation.

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of 12-week plyometric training on jump and balance abilities in young figure skaters. Thirty subjects at Haidong Elementary School in Tainan City were assigned randomly to the experimental group or the control group, each group contained 15 children including 8 boys and 7 girls. Both the experimental and the control groups underwent figure skating training but the experimental group was added plyometric training 3 times a week. All the subjects were tested on vertical jump, broad jump, static balance, and dynamic balance abilities before and after training. Descriptive statistics and paired t test were used to express percent change and analyze the difference between pre and post test in each group. One- Way ANCOVA was conduced to compare the difference in post test among the groups. When the significant level was reached, LSD pairwise comparisons were adopted to compare among the groups. The significant level was set at α=.05. Compare to the control group, the experimental group improved significantly (p < .05) on vertical jump, broad jump, static balance, and dynamic balance tests after 12-week plyometric training. This study concluded low intensity of plyometric training could improve jump and balance abilities, it is suitable to be used for the training of young figure skaters.

Abstract (sommario):
My thesis concentrates on the problems of the banking fees of banks in Czech Republic and Germany. It aims to examine the bank fees from the bank customers{\crq} point of view, and witch regard to the importance of the bank{\crq}s profit formation by analyzing and comparing bank politics in the Czech Republic and Germany. This thesis consists of two parts: theoretical and practical one. The theoretical part focuses on analyzing different types of bank schemes, their advantages and disadvantages and various types of banks existing in the market, and also on the scope of integral rate license. Last but not least, it deals with the analysis of the new Basel II which supports the stability of the financial system and competitive environment. The theoretical part also informs about the structure of the bank system in Germany and the competence of various bank institutions. The practical part similarly concentrates on analyzing the level of costs and commissions in relation to pecuniary gain of banks in Czech Republic and Germany. It also compares the banks on the basis of various indicators, such as for example the total assets, capital assets, number of business opportunities and net profit. Besides, it contains the level and progression of various fees of specific services over the last years, the pricing of bank deals and also all sorts of surveys like the most ridiculous fee, the bank with the best provided service and the bank with the best arranged scale of charges. Apart from that, it looks into the consumers{\crq} awareness about tariff changes in Czech Republic as well as Germany and it also focuses on the rules of conduct that the banks agreed on in order to improve the quality of the services for their customers.

Still, in spite of an increasing number of HE and research institutions committed to make science more equal and some positive trends in figures on Gender equality in STEM research, it still appears to be difficult to prioritize gender equality. This is particularly true for disciplines such as ICT/IST where female representation at all levels is among the lowest ones among STEM topics and where a gender sensitive approach to ICT design and programming is far from being understood in its implications among computer and information systems scientist. H2020 (PGERI and SWAFS programmes in particular), promoted the concept of institutional change for gender equality, insisting on the need for merging change management and gender policies. The volume is focusing on a presentation and reflexive review of results and tools from the H2020 EQUAL-IST project to discuss opportunities to innovate and transform HR management and Institutional communication, research design, teaching & students services, via gender equality, and how such innovations could be multiplied and sustained with a focus on ICT and IST research organizations. The volume is complemented by contributions from other projects on institutional change in research.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter discusses figure skating in the twenty-first century. The popularity of figure skating grew steadily for more than half a century when the attack on Nancy Kerrigan and the unprecedented media coverage that followed thrust the sport into the limelight, if only briefly. However, by century's end, television ratings had declined substantially, and except for major competitions, most televised events had disappeared. Most touring shows disappeared as well. The two well-established companies, Champions on Ice and Stars on Ice, still tour in the United States, although their attendance has declined from that of the mid-1990s. Holiday on Ice still tours in Europe. The balance of athleticism and artistry that defines figure skating has been retained as the sport has entered the twenty-first century, although there has been some eroding of artistry since the mid-1980s, a result of the ever-increasing emphasis on athleticism, especially jumping.

Abstract (sommario):
Since the 1960s, televised World and Olympic competition brought figure skating into the homes of millions who discovered and enjoyed the perfect balance between artistry and athleticism that the sport offered. This developed an increasingly enthusiastic audience for the sport and led inevitably to a participatory role as converts filled ice rinks. Those new to skating discovered a recreational activity that persons of all ages could enjoy and that entire families could do together. Many, young and old, took lessons, and some became highly proficient. Not surprisingly, new competitive opportunities followed, which are the focus of this chapter. Adult skating is the most recent and fastest-growing area of competitive figure skating; collegiate and intercollegiate skating has become an available part of the college experience; and synchronized skating has evolved from an unpretentious beginning into a World championship sport that may become an Olympic sport.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter examines the Napoleonic subprefects who have been in office in the Netherlands and Northwest Germany. Within the prefectoral system, these sous-préfets were the highest officials at arrondissement (disctrict) level. Activities of subprefects, somewhat neglected by historians, give insight into how French tried to rally the locals, and how this affected the daily functioning of the Empire. Discussed are subprefects’ sociocultural backgrounds, imperial careers, and perception of Napoleonic governance. Subprefects had to balance national, local, and personal interest. Integration at district level was hard when the letter of the administrative legislation and the precise instructions from above were rigidly adhered to. Subprefects traveling the Empire linked events in the Netherlands and Northwest Germany to developments elsewhere, promoting integration into the Empire. Circulation patterns reflect different ideas on the required level of integration. It is argued that the figure of the subprefect was a potential ‘tool of integration’. That subprefects were close to the ground could contributed to the effectiveness of Napoleonic governance. But subprefects also coped with demanding prefects, and interference of other agents of the central state. Reversely, unwilling subprefects were in a position to hinder the integration process.

Abstract (sommario):
The acceleration of changes underlines the need to enhance our efforts to adapt education to the dynamics of the current economic situation and the issue of employment. In the framework of the circular economy, pedagogy, which is based on the educability of individuals, takes into consideration forms of educational planning to identify a long-lasting balance between economic prosperity, social wellness, and environmental development. The challenge of the future is the possibility of increasing youth employment; this calls for pedagogical expertise and organizational planning to ensure that everyone’s development is authentic and holistic. To this end, the MSc Degree programme in Educational Planning and Human Resource Development offered by the Catholic University trains graduates to become professional figures with expertise in coordinating and managing the development of human resources (guidance, selection, personal services); the professional training and retraining of project managers in social and educational contexts for both academic and corporate spheres. The guiding vision behind the MSc in Educational Planning and Human Resource Development is fully in line with the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart’s educational project, to support a culture of responsibility and creativity, entrepreneurism and collaboration, multi-disciplinary knowledge and skills, and scientific research for the purpose of holistic human development. Educational planning, in a period of socio-economic and social change, involving the whole planet in many respects, can relaunch an ‘integral model of development’, based on long-term wellbeing, technological innovation, ‘human development’, and the dignity of work

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractPrivate wealth is comprised in part of capitalized future land rents. The Golden Rule of Accumulation is preserved even if we introduce land into our meta-model. Urban land is far more valuable than agricultural land. The risk tied to land leads to a reduction in its value in the form of a “risk premium” α > 0. Land rents can be taxed without any possibility of the tax being passed on to tenants and without loss of efficiency. If the tax is offset by a reduction in income tax, their taxation can even give rise to efficiency gains and positive distributive effects. The possibility of government intervention in the residential rental market represents a further risk for landowners. The sensitivity of the value of land to changes in the interest rate and hence the risk premium α rise with falling interest rates. In light of these many different risks, land as investment can only to a limited extent be a substitute for government bonds and hence for increasing private wealth by way of public debt. We calculate the value of land as asset category in the OECD plus China region. To this end, we primarily rely on data from statistical offices that provide figures for land in their national balance sheets. Our calculations show that the value of land in the countries of the OECD plus China region is about twice annual consumption in the region.

Abstract (sommario):
Chapter one examines the existence of the Indian male body as an object of admiration and repulsion. On one hand, the Indian male body is glamorized as a specimen of Classical beauty, an ideal of physical and aesthetic form. On the other hand, that Indian body possesses the potential for danger and physical harm. Examples such as Tecumseh, Uncas, and Francis Parkman's descriptions of Native men demonstrate this contradictory balance of admiration and repulsion, a dynamic that both embodies and disembodies the Indian male figure. This chapter shows how American art and literature in the nineteenth century attempts to neutralize the perceived threat of the Indian male body through artistic objectification of that body, an objectification that aims to construct an ideal for white manhood.

Abstract (sommario):
Maintenance of normal cell function and structure requires some level of stability of the cell’s DNA—at least the DNA that makes up the genes of the cell. In most eukaryotes most of the DNA in the genome does not encode genes and has no known function beyond forming long spacers between successive genes. For example, the gene density in the germline (micronuclear) genome of stichotrich ciliates (formerly referred to as hypotrich ciliates) is very low; only a few percent of the DNA encodes the approximately 27,000 different genes, and more than 95% is spacer DNA. Powerful DNA repair systems guard the stability both of nongene and gene DNA in contemporary cells, protecting it against mutagenesis. Although species survival depends on DNA stability, cell evolution requires changes in DNA. Presumably, there is a balance between instability of DNA that allows evolution and a stability that protects species from mutational extinction. Could cells evolve strategies that change the balance, allowing a greater rate of DNA change (gene evolution) without jeopardizing species survival? The stichotrichs may, in fact, have evolved such a mechanism, dramatically modifying their germline DNA during evolution to facilitate creation of new genes without reducing the level of cell survival. The modifications of germline DNA in ciliates, in turn, require dramatic DNA processing to convert germline DNA into somatic DNA during the life cycle of the organisms. The ciliate strategy rests on the evolution of nuclear dimorphism: the inclusion both of a germline nucleus (micronucleus) and a somatic nucleus (macronucleus) in the same cell (Figure 9.1; for a general review, see Prescott [6, 7]). Like the example in Figure 9.1, most stichotrich species contain two or more micronuclei and two or more macronuclei per cell. The multiple micronuclei are genetically identical to each other, and the multiple macronuclei are genetically identical; these multiplicities of nuclei have no bearing on the issues addressed in this chapter. The micronucleus is used only in cell mating, and its genes are silent. Hence, micronuclear genes do not support the maintenance, growth, or division of the cell.

Abstract (sommario):
The new industrial revolution will encompass massive change. Manufacturing Companies are pursuing digitalization and trying to figure out how to implement collaborative robots, all the while trying to manage data safety and security. It is a big challenge to deal with all the needed infrastructures to handle the big data digitalization provides whilst having to account for the shielding of it. Even more so when one has to succeed at it while taking care of the workers, the sustainability of their jobs, the implementation of safe practices at work, based on the contributions of the whole, through efficient vertical communication, imbued with Safety Culture and aiming the sustainability of the Company itself. This chapter proposes to address the role of standardization in managing industry 4.0, where culture, Risk Management and Human Factors are key, and how the tools provided by these norms may contribute to nimbly balance each Company's needs.

Abstract (sommario):
The Air Injection (AI) Power Augmentation technology (HAI for humid Air injection and DAI for dry air injection) has primary benefits of increasing power of combustion turbine/combined cycle (CT/CC) power plants by 15–30% at a fraction of the new plant cost with coincidental significant heat rate reductions (10–15%) and NOx emissions reductions (for diffusion type combustors up to 60%) (See References 1, 2, 3): Figure 1A is a simplified heat and mass balance for the PG7241 (FA) combustion turbine with HAI. The auxiliary compressor supplies the additional airflow that is mixed with the steam produced by the HRSG and injected upstream of combustors. Figure 1B presents the heat and mass balance for the PG7142 CT based combined cycle power plant with HAI. It is similar to that presented on Figure 1A except that the humid air is created by mixing of steam, extracted from the steam turbine, with the supplementary airflow from the auxiliary compressor. The maximum acceptable injection rates are evaluated with proper margins by a number of factors established by OEMs: the compressor surge limitations, maximum torque, the generator capacities, maximum moisture levels upstream of combustors, etc.

Abstract (sommario):
Peripheral neuropathy (PN), commonly caused by diabetes mellitus, is a debilitating condition that currently affects approximately 20 million Americans. Chronic symptoms of PN often involve pain and weakness of the lower limbs, with eventual sensation loss on the plantar surfaces of the feet. According to epidemiological studies, reduced foot sole sensation has been linked to decreased standing stability [1] and an increased risk of falling [2]. Consequently, cost-effective interventions are needed to improve balance and mobility in this population. A growing body of research suggests that vibrotactile cues delivered to sensate areas of the lower limb may be an effective way to provide information about foot sole pressure to PN patients who experience poor balance control. Indeed, sensory substitution devices that provide vibrotactile feedback have been shown to aid in balance and improve postural control in various patient populations [3–7]. However, none of these technologies have been based on measurements of foot pressure nor have they been used as a balance prosthesis. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of a new external lower-limb sensory prosthesis, the Walkasins™, on the balance and gait of individuals with PN who experience balance problems [8]. Walkasins™ consist of two parts: a leg unit and a foot pad (Figure 1). The leg unit wraps around the lower leg of the user and contains electronics for reading foot pad pressure signals, a microprocessor, and four vibrating motors that provide gentle tactile sensory cues to the front, back, medial, and lateral surfaces of the user’s leg. These cues reflect real-time foot pressure information at a location above the ankle where skin sensation is still present. The leg unit has a power button, two status LEDs, and a reset button (not shown in Figure 1). Power is supplied by a rechargeable internal battery. The foot pad is a thin consumable sole insert that can be cut to size and fit into a regular shoe. The foot pad connects to the leg unit through a physical cable. In this study, subjects performed gait and balance assessments with and without the Walkasins™ turned on in order to determine its short-term effects.

Abstract (sommario):
The term tensegrity was first coined by Buckminster Fuller to describe a structure in which continuous tension in its members forms the basis for structural integrity. Fuller most famously demonstrated the concept of tensegrity in architecture through the design of geodesic domes while his student, artist Kenneth Snelson, applied the concept of tensegrity to create sculptures that appear to defy gravity (Figure 1). Snelson’s tensegrity sculptures have minimal components and achieve their stability through dynamic distribution of tensile and compressive forces amongst their members to create internal balance [1]. It was upon viewing Snelson’s sculptures that Donald Ingber became inspired by their structural efficiency and dynamic force balance to adopt tensegrity as a paradigm upon which to analyze cell structure and mechanics. It has been 30 years since the premier appearance of the cellular tensegrity model and although the model is still much under debate, empirical evidence suggests that the model may explain a wide variety of phenomena ranging from tumor growth to cell motility [1–4].

Abstract (sommario):
Total hip replacements restore pain-free mobility to approximately 200,000 patients in the U.S. each year [1]. A typical hip system comprises a metal alloy stem, a femoral head (ceramic or metal alloy), and a polyethylene acetabular cup fit into a metal alloy backing. A modular press-fit Morse taper is commonly used to attach the femoral head to the stem. There are also more recent designs that incorporate a second interface at the neck-stem junction (Figure 1). Increased modularity in total hip replacement design allows the surgeon to intraoperatively preserve patient anatomy such as leg length and femoral anteversion and better balance the surrounding soft tissue for optimal biomechanics. However, modularity also increases the number of mechanical junctions and interfaces in the device which may lead to complications such as corrosion, wear, and fracture.

Abstract (sommario):
One of the most commonly used microfluidic droplet generator designs is the T-junction as shown in Figure 1. In this design, the dispersed phase microchannel, usually containing an aqueous solution, perpendicularly intersects the main channel, which contains the continuous phase (oil). The T-junction design has been widely adopted because of its simplicity and the superior control it offers over droplet size. Two primary operational regimes have been identified where breakup is dominated by confinement of the emerging droplet within the microchannel, known as the squeezing regime (Ca<0.002), or by the balance of shear and surface tension forces known as the dripping regime (Ca>0.02). The operational mode of the T-junction generator is primarily characterized by the Capillary number (Ca = μU / γ), which describes the competition between the aforementioned forces. In between the two regimes exists the transition regime where both confinement and shear forces are important.

Abstract (sommario):
Influence of the sea level changes on the dynamics of accumulative coasts (in the region of the western Crimea) is considered. The data of observations shows that the greatest change of the beaches under the influence of the level changes by 1 cm can be 1, 3 m. However, the period for which it is determined (1989–2001) was characterized, firstly, by amplification of storm activity, and secondly, by substantial growth of deficiency in deposits. It has been caused by the new deep-water mooring in Eupatoria trading port, which has changed the local migration of deposits. The regular deepening of the waterway has resulted in change of their balance, adaptation of the coast to the changed conditions and, consequently, to acceleration of the coastal line abrasion. The weakest change of beaches under the influence of changes of the level by 1 cm, which is determined for the period 2006–2010, is 0,2–0,3 m. This period was characterized by relatively little changeability of storm activity and relative stabilization of anthropogenic influence, thus such figure seems to be more trustworthy.

Abstract (sommario):
Ultra-short pulsed lasers are known for their ability to precisely machine materials including human hard and soft tissues while minimizing the amount of thermal energy deposited to the surroundings. Non-thermal ablation produced by ultra-short pulsed lasers in the femtosecond to picosecond range is very effective for dental applications. As shown in Figure 1, most decay occurs in the dentin, which is found between the outer surface (enamel) and the inner region containing the nerve endings (pulp) [1]. Caries removal and the preparation of cavities in dentistry are primarily performed by the use of mechanical drills. The current techniques are invasive and cause patient discomfort. Due to the vibrations of the drills it is necessary to use local anesthetic for the majority of dental procedures. A continuous water spray is used in conjunction with the drills to balance the temperature rise produced by mechanical vibrations. Drills are somewhat limited in precision causing a large amount of healthy tooth to be lost during any restoration process. Replacing a multitude of mechanical tools with one non-invasive, accurate and painless laser treatment will be a huge advancement to the current dental techniques.

Abstract (sommario):
Air-fuel balance is the key to clean combustion. Coal-fired public utilities are under constant pressure to meet environmental air quality standards in reducing NOx emissions. Reduction of NOx is critically dependent, on controlled combustion conditions. Accurate measurement and control of the Primary and Secondary Air is an important factor in attaining this goal. Once the Primary Air can be measured accurately, the next variable to consider in the chain is the Secondary air. The actual “Burner Zone Stoichiometry” is the sum of the two air flows to any one burner plus the fuel flow. As shown in Figure 1 below, the Primary air conveys the fuel to the burner and supplies some of the combustion air. The Secondary air provides the oxygen to complete the combustion in the “Burner Zone” to the extent the burner is designed. On a typical burner, there is more combustion air delivered to the burner by the Secondary air than the Primary air generally by a factor of 2, depending on burner design. The additional air or Secondary air completes the combustion in the “Burner Zone”, based on optimizing a set of conditions such as NOx, CO, and boiler tube flame impingement. Maintaining desired stoichiometric ratio and Primary/Secondary air ratio to minimize emissions requires accurate measurement/control of the Primary and Secondary air.

Abstract (sommario):
Proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are becoming the center of attention as an alternative power source for automotive and stationary applications due to their ability to produce high power densities under rapid load changes. Even though a significant amount of research on PEMFCs has been conducted over the last few decades, the cost associated with platinum (Pt) catalyst remains a barrier for their commercialization. For instance, the US Department of Energy has a target to reduce the use of Pt in PEMFCs to 0.125 mg/cm2 or less, while maintaining rated stack power densities. A path to achieve this target is the use of thin catalyst-layers (CLs), such as nanostructured thin-film (NSTF) CLs [1]. Figure 1 shows a SEM image of NSTF CL showing the catalyst coated whiskers on a microstructured substrate after sputter coating with a PtCoMn alloy. The lengths of the whiskers are in the order of a few microns; however, the thickness of an NSTF CL inside a PEMFC sandwich is often in the range of 500 nm. Due to its submicron thickness, NSTF CL has low liquid-water capacity which can make low temperature operation a challenge. At low temperatures, NSTF CLs experience severe water flooding [2]. Unfortunately, sometimes low-temperature operation is unavoidable and for rapid startup relatively high current densities may be necessary. Therefore, a successful water balance is required to avoid water-flooding in the NSTF CLs.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This work presents a simplified approach to optimally designing a heat sink with metallic thermal conductivity enhancers infiltrated with phase change material for electronic cooling. In present study, thermal conductivity enhancers are in the form of a honeycomb structure. A benchmarked two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model was employed to investigate the thermal performance of the phase change material-metallic thermal conductivity enhancer composite heat sinks. Metallic thermal conductivity enhancers are often used in conjunction with phase change material to enhance the conductivity of the composite heat sink. Under constrained heat sink volume, the higher volume fraction of thermal conductivity enhancers improves the effective thermal conductivity of the composite, while it reduces the amount of latent heat storage simultaneously. The present work arrives at the optimal design of heat sink for electronic cooling by resolving the stated tradeoff. In this study, the total volume of the heat sink and the interfacial heat transfer area between the phase change material and thermal conductivity enhancers are constrained for all design points. Furthermore, assuming conduction-dominated heat transfer, an effective numerical model that solves the single energy equation with the effective properties of the phase change material- metallic thermal conductivity enhancer composite has been developed. The temperature gradient-time history is compared and matched for both the models to arrive at the accurate effective thermal conductivity value. The relationship of effective thermal conductivity as a function of metal volume fraction and thermal conductivity of metallic thermal conductivity enhancer is obtained. The figure of merit (FOM) is used to define the balance between effective thermal conductivity and energy storage capacity. The FOM is maximized to find the optimal volume fraction for the present design. The results from the study reveals that there exists an optimal metal volume fraction that maximizes the thermal performance of the composite.

Abstract (sommario):
Key Message Ontario long-term care (LTC) home residents have experienced disproportionately high morbidity and mortality, both from COVID-19 and from the conditions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. There are several measures that could be effective in preventing COVID-19 outbreaks, hospitalizations, and deaths in Ontario’s LTC homes, if implemented. First, temporary staffing could be minimized by improving staff working conditions. Second, homes could be further decrowded by a continued disallowance of three- and four-resident rooms and additional temporary housing for the most crowded homes. Third, the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection in staff could be minimized by approaches that reduce the risk of transmission in communities with a high burden of COVID-19. Summary Background The Province of Ontario has 626 licensed LTC homes and 77,257 long-stay beds; 58% of homes are privately owned, 24% are non-profit/charitable, 16% are municipal. LTC homes were strongly affected during Ontario’s first and second waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Questions What do we know about the first and second waves of COVID-19 in Ontario LTC homes? Which risk factors are associated with COVID-19 outbreaks in Ontario LTC homes and the extent and death rates associated with outbreaks? What has been the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the general health and wellbeing of LTC residents? How has the existing Ontario evidence on COVID-19 in LTC settings been used to support public health interventions and policy changes in these settings? What are the further measures that could be effective in preventing COVID-19 outbreaks, hospitalizations, and deaths in Ontario’s LTC homes? Findings As of January 14, 2021, a total of 3,211 Ontario LTC home residents have died of COVID-19, totaling 60.7% of all 5,289 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date. There have now been more cumulative LTC home outbreaks during the second wave as compared with the first wave. The infection and death rates among LTC residents have been lower during the second wave, as compared with the first wave, and a greater number of LTC outbreaks have involved only staff infections. The growth rate of SARS-CoV-2 infections among LTC residents was slower during the first two months of the second wave in September and October 2020, as compared with the first wave. However, the growth rate after the two-month mark is comparatively faster during the second wave. The majority of second wave infections and deaths in LTC homes have occurred between December 1, 2020, and January 14, 2021 (most recent date of data extraction prior to publication). This highlights the recent intensification of the COVID-19 pandemic in LTC homes that has mirrored the recent increase in community transmission of SARS-CoV-2 across Ontario. Evidence from Ontario demonstrates that the risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks and subsequent deaths in LTC are distinct from the risk factors for outbreaks and deaths in the community (Figure 1). The most important risk factors for whether a LTC home will experience an outbreak is the daily incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infections in the communities surrounding the home and the occurrence of staff infections. The most important risk factors for the magnitude of an outbreak and the number of resulting resident deaths are older design, chain ownership, and crowding. Figure 1. Anatomy of Outbreaks and Spread of COVID-19 in LTC Homes and Among Residents Figure from Peter Hamilton, personal communication. Many Ontario LTC home residents have experienced severe and potentially irreversible physical, cognitive, psychological, and functional declines as a result of precautionary public health interventions imposed on homes, such as limiting access to general visitors and essential caregivers, resident absences, and group activities. There has also been an increase in the prescribing of psychoactive drugs to Ontario LTC residents. The accumulating evidence on COVID-19 in Ontario’s LTC homes has been leveraged in several ways to support public health interventions and policy during the pandemic. Ontario evidence showed that SARS-CoV-2 infections among LTC staff was associated with subsequent COVID-19 deaths among LTC residents, which motivated a public order to restrict LTC staff from working in more than one LTC home in the first wave. Emerging Ontario evidence on risk factors for LTC home outbreaks and deaths has been incorporated into provincial pandemic surveillance tools. Public health directives now attempt to limit crowding in LTC homes by restricting occupancy to two residents per room. The LTC visitor policy was also revised to designate a maximum of two essential caregivers who can visit residents without time limits, including when a home is experiencing an outbreak. Several further measures could be effective in preventing COVID-19 outbreaks, hospitalizations, and deaths in Ontario’s LTC homes. First, temporary staffing could be minimized by improving staff working conditions. Second, the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection in staff could be minimized by measures that reduce the risk of transmission in communities with a high burden of COVID-19. Third, LTC homes could be further decrowded by a continued disallowance of three- and four-resident rooms and additional temporary housing for the most crowded homes. Other important issues include improved prevention and detection of SARS-CoV-2 infection in LTC staff, enhanced infection prevention and control (IPAC) capacity within the LTC homes, a more balanced and nuanced approach to public health measures and IPAC strategies in LTC homes, strategies to promote vaccine acceptance amongst residents and staff, and further improving data collection on LTC homes, residents, staff, visitors and essential caregivers for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. Interpretation Comparisons of the first and second waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in the LTC setting reveal improvement in some but not all epidemiological indicators. Despite this, the second wave is now intensifying within LTC homes and without action we will likely experience a substantial additional loss of life before the widespread administration and time-dependent maximal effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines. The predictors of outbreaks, the spread of infection, and deaths in Ontario’s LTC homes are well documented and have remained unchanged between the first and the second wave. Some of the evidence on COVID-19 in Ontario’s LTC homes has been effectively leveraged to support public health interventions and policies. Several further measures, if implemented, have the potential to prevent additional LTC home COVID-19 outbreaks and deaths.
