Abstract. Automatic bin filling is needed for apple harvest and in-field sorting. A commercially viable bin filler for in-field use should be simple, compact, low in cost, and be able to distribute apples evenly in the bin without causing bruising damage. An innovative bin filling technology was developed for incorporation with the new apple harvest and in-field sorting machine recently developed by our group. Field tests of the first version of the bin filler in the 2016 harvest season showed relatively high bruising rates and uneven fruit distributions. Subsequently, a second version of the

The bin filler, which is used for filling the fruit container or bin with apples coming from the sorting system, plays a critical role in the self-propelled apple harvest and in-field sorting (HIS) machine that is being developed in our laboratory. Two major technical challenges in developing the bin filler are limited space in the HIS machine and high throughput. A literature review showed that despite many different types of bin fillers currently available for in-field use, none of them is suitable for the HIS machine because of their large size, use of the bin rotating design conc

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Soon, the National Weather Service’s Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) network will be upgraded to allow dual-polarization capabilities. Therefore, it is imperative to understand and identify microphysical processes using the polarimetric variables. Though melting and size sorting of hydrometeors have been investigated, there has been relatively little focus devoted to the impacts of evaporation on the polarimetric characteristics of rainfall. In this study, a simple explicit bin microphysics one-dimensional rainshaft model is constructed to quantify the impacts of eva

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The computation of hydrometeor sedimentation in one-moment, two-moment, and three-moment bulk microphysics parameterizations is examined in the context of a 1D model, with no other microphysical processes active. The solution from an analytic bin model is used as a reference against which the bulk model simulations are compared. Errors in the computed (nonprognostic) moments from 0 to 7 from the bulk model runs are examined. In addition to the commonly used predicted variables (number concentration, mass, and reflectivity), bulk scheme configurations with alternative combinations of p

Abstract The 3D Goddard Cumulus Ensemble model is used to simulate two convective events observed during the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Large-Scale Biosphere–Atmosphere (TRMM LBA) experiment in Brazil. These two events epitomized the type of convective systems that formed in two distinctly different environments observed during TRMM LBA. The 26 January 1999 squall line formed within a sheared low-level easterly wind flow. On 23 February 1999, convection developed in weak low-level westerly flow, resulting in weakly organized, less intense convection. Initial simulations captured the b

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Rapid advances in genomics discovery tools and a growing realization of microRNA’s implication in intercellular communication have led to a proliferation of studies of circulating microRNA sorting and regulation across cells and different species. Although sometimes, reaching controversial scientific discoveries and conclusions, these studies have yielded new insights in the functional roles of circulating microRNA and a plethora of analytical methods and tools. Here, we consider this body of work in light of key computational principles underpinning discovery of circulating microRNAs

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract B cells develop from hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) in the bone marrow (BM) through a number of distinct stages before they migrate to the periphery as naïve mature B lymphocytes. These developmental stages can be identified by expression of cell surface antigens and Ig gene rearrangement status. The aim of this study was to characterize the earliest steps of normal human B cell development by gene expression profiling. Immunomagnetic selection and subsequent fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) were used to isolate five populations from adult human BM: CD34+CD38− (HSC), CD34+C

Abstract (sommario):
In the avian embryo, the wall of the aorta is a site where haemopoiesis occurs in large diffuse foci from day 3 to day 10. In contrast to haemopoiesis in other organs of the embryo, para-aortic haemopoiesis is sustained by stem cells, which emerge in situ. Previous studies have demonstrated that the para-aortic region from the day-4 chick embryo harbours committed myeloid progenitors and committed erythroid progenitors. The present paper reports the in vitro development of para-aortic progenitors with both myelomonocytic and erythroid potentialities. Three types of myelo-erythroid progenitors

Abstract (sommario):
In October 2012, symptoms of cavity spot (1) were observed on roots of two 50 ha, Red Core Chantenay processing carrot (Daucus carota L. subsp. sativus (Hoffm.)) crops in the Columbia Basin of central Washington. Symptoms consisted of sunken, elliptical lesions (3 to 15 mm long) on the root surface. Approximately 6% of the roots in each crop were affected, which was sufficient to present sorting problems for the processor. Symptomatic roots were washed thoroughly in tap water, and then small sections of tissue from the lesion margins were removed aseptically and plated onto water agar (WA) wit
