Abstract (sommario):

This study aims to identify the diversity and distribution of birds species for bird watching ecotourism development in the Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park. Field works was conducted in three months, from October to in December 2012. Data collection, was done with line transect method at Leang-Leang, Pattunuang, and Karaenta. Geographical position of transect line (traces) was recorded by using GPS then processed with GIS in order to produced bird watching maps tourist track. Result soft his study showed that, there are 47 species of birds found in the three lines of observation track, and 23 of them (48.9%) was endemic to the island of Sulawesi. Diversity indices of birds on the observation track at Leang-Leang is 3.02, in Pattunuang 2.78, and in the Karaenta 2.25. Among the three lines of observation, the highest population abundance is at Leang-Leang tracking line. It’s equal to 29 individuals /ha while the lowest population abundance are on the Karaenta track with 9 individuals /ha. Key words: Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park, Bird Watching, Ecotourism

This article explores ornithology as a hidden resource in anthropological field work. Relating experiences among the Penan forest nomads of Sarawak, Borneo, the author describes how his personal knowledge of bird life paved the way for good working relations, and even friendship, with the Penan. Representing two very different cultures simple communication between the scholar on duty and the Penan community was difficult indeed, but the birds provided a common ground that enabled the two parties to exchange experiences, knowledge and skills. In certain ways the author's fieldwork-based project relates to the Penan’s religious interpretation of birds, but the article is primarily concerned with the fact that a mutual understanding was created from this common ground, and that our thoughts on fieldwork preparations may be taken further by such experiences.

Bird watching is one of the attractive ecotourism activities for travelers and nature enthusiasts, which rapidly growing in Thailand. This study aims to: (1) explore bird diversity in various green spaces in ValayaAlongkorn Rajabhat University (VRU); and (2) examine which bird species dominates the study areas. Bird data were collected using point count techniques in two sessions; early morning, and late afternoon, at VRU from May 2020 to April 2021. Frequency of occurrence value (FQ) was analyzed for classifying status groups of birds in the VRU. Order Passeriformes was numerically the dominant order in our study area, with 22 species (47.7% of total represented species), while the other bird orders were the least dominant, represented by 1 to 5 species in range. A total of 47 species of birds belonging to 29 Families and 12 Orders were recorded. During this study, significantly, the highest bird richness was recorded in agriculture areas (35 ± 2.3 SD), followed by the species from recreation areas (27 ± 1.8 SD) and natural wetland (17 ± 1.7 SD) (P>0.05). Five migrant bird species and 35 resident species were observed, and 10 bird species were recorded in both the seasonal status as migrant and resident species. Most of the bird species are listed as of least concern, while only one species, Mycteria leucocephala, are listed as near-threatened. Nine bird species are classified as common species in the VRU with > 80 % of frequency of occurrence. The pattern of bird diversity in the VRU in general follows the natural condition of green area space in the VRU. Typical characteristics of birds, their habitat and appearing period can develop bird-watching objects, which become interesting attractions for travelers and nature enthusiasts, promoting ecotourism development and efforts to conserve bird diversity.

Perhutani area in Poncokusumo is inhabited by endemic and protected mammals and birds. However the data of the species are still lacking while the wildlife is threatened by forest conversion and hunting activities. Â This study aims to determine mammals and bird conservation strategies through wildlife watching ecotourism based on community. The objectives are survey mammals and birds species in the Perhutani area in Poncokusumo, analyze the perception and knowledge of the community and visitors toward wildlife, analyze local people and visitors perception on idea to develop wildlife watching ecotourism and conducted SWOT analysis to formulate mammals and birds conservation strategy through wildlife watching ecotourism based on local community. The results showed that the Perhutani forest in Poncokusumo has 13 species of mammals and 54 species of birds and included in the category with very good quality of fauna diversity. Local people and visitor perceptions towards mammals and birds are vary, but most of the respondents are support the idea of developing wildlife watching ecotourism. From the SWOT analysis result, there are 5 strategic recommendations. This study suggest that mammals and birds conservation through idea in developing wildlife watching ecotourism based on community in perhutani area of Poncokusumo is possible to be applied.

Avitourism has now become the most ideal alternative for local community-based bird conservation to be developed. The aim of this research is to analyze the potential of birds as objects for birdwatching in the forest of Masihulan Village, the data collection method uses the point count method. Stillulan Village Kematan Seram Utara has quite a lot of bird species and some of them are protected by the Indonesian state, so it has the potential for developing bird watching tourism. The total number of bird species that can be found in Stillulan Village is 32 bird species from 18 families. The type of bird that dominates is the Maluku Parrot with the highest number of individuals, namely 80 individuals. The bird community on route 1 has a diversity index (H') = 2.82, an evenness index value (E) = 0.86. On line 2 with a total of 24 birds, it has a diversity index (H') = 2.90, an evenness index value (E) = 0.91. And on line 3 with a total of 24 birds, it has a diversity index (H') = 2.81, an evenness index value (E) = 0.89Avitourism saat ini telah menjadi alternatif konservasi burung berbasis masyarakat local yang paling ideal untuk dikembangkan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menganalisis potensi satwa burung sebagai objek birdAwatching di hutan Desa Masihulan, metode pengumpulan data menggunakan metode point count. Desa Masihulan Kematan Seram Utara memiliki jenis burung yang cukup banyak dan beberapa di antaranya termasuk dilindungi oleh negara Indonesia, sehingga berpotensi untuk pengembangan wisata bird watching. Total jenis burung yang dapat ditemukan di Desa Masihulan ada 32 jenis burung dari 18 famili. Jenis burung yang mendominasi adalah burung Nuri Maluku dengan jumlah individu paling banyak yaitu 80 individu.Komunitas burung pada jalur 1 memiliki indeks keanekaragaman (H’) = 2,82, nilai indeks kemerataan (E) = 0,86. Pada jalur 2 dengan jumlah burung sebanyak 24, memiliki indeks keanekaragaman (H’) = 2,90, nilai indeks kemerataan (E) = 0,91. Dan pada jalur 3 dengan jumlah burung sebanyak 24, memiliki indeks keanekargaman (H’) = 2,81, nilai indeks kemerataan (E)= 0,89.

Abstract HCV (High Conservation Value) areas in oil palm plantations has a potential to become an ecotourism destination, particularly where bird watching is concerned. However, the potential of HCV to become an ecotourism area has not yet been explored. The study aims to identify diversity of bird in different characteristic of HCV in oil palm landscape and to analysis which characteristic of HCV prospect to develop for bird watching ecotourism site. Data were collected using the line transect method in fourteen HCV areas in different plantation estates at different three provinces in Sumatera. The result showed about 87 bird species and 42 families were identified. Number of species recorded ranged from 10 species to 34 species each site. Based on species conservation status of IUCN, three species were listed as Vulnerable, according to CITES list, three species were classified in Appendix II. Eleven species were listed as protected species in Indonesia. The existence of these protected birds might be regarded as the iconic species of HCV areas, attracting tourists for birding. The HCV areas have a diversity of birds with different ecological roles which are thought to be related to the characteristics of the HCVs. The characteristics of HCV areas are; forest cover, riparian forest, or shrub, located in the middle of oil palm plantation had higher diversity of birds. Those kind of HCV characteristics is suitable to be developed as an ecotourism area. The management may utilize this study to design and manage ecotourism interventions, especially for birdwatching action.

Outdoor recreational activities (e.g., bushwalking and bird-watching) can increase participants? environmental awareness, but can also cause environmental damage and impact negatively on wildlife if conducted irresponsibly and/or in large numbers. A field experiment with a before-after-control-impact design conducted in Wyperfeld National Park, Victoria determined whether simulated bushwalking by researchers over a 4-week period had an immediate impact on the composition of breeding bird assemblages on ten 1-ha mallee plots. Birds were surveyed with point counts preand post-intrusion. Species richness, diversity and composition of bird assemblages were unaffected by the pedestrian traffic regime imposed. Results suggest that normal pedestrian traffic in spring and summer may not influence ?bush bird? assemblage composition very markedly in the short-term in Victorian parks. However, the birds could have responded to intrusion, but less dramatically than by leaving the plots. That bushwalking and allied activities may have other adverse effects on the behaviour and physiology of Australian ?bush birds? still needs to be investigated.

Certain technologies—optics (binoculars), field guides, and later, automobiles—helped to enable this pursuit. In the twentieth century, bird watching became an immense industry. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, one report claims that in America "an estimated 70.4 million people now go out-of-doors to watch birds one or more times per year" (Cordell & Herbert, 2003, p. 3). Space satellites are invisible instruments of globalization that influence governmental policies. This paper examines remote sensing satellites as optical devices capable of redefining human cognition. They represent accessibility and openness through the more agreeable paradigm of transparency. However, transparency, like surveillance, is based on the interconnection between power, knowledge and perceptual experience. Artists use a variety of tactical practices, including amateurism, to tease apart these connections. Amateurism dedicates itself to the politics of knowledge. The author concludes, based on examples of her work and that of others, that the potential for political intervention exists when knowledge is paired with action.

PELATIHAN IDENTIFIKASI DAN PENGAMATAN BURUNG BAGI PEMANDU WISATA ALAM TANGKOKO DI KOTA BITUNG ABSTRAK Telah dilakukan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat tentang pelatihan identifikasi dan pengamatan burung bagi pemandu wisata alam Tangkoko Kota Bitung dengan tujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan dalam pengamatan dan identifikasi burung. Kegiatan dilaksanakan di Cagar Alam Tangkoko-Batuangus dan Taman Wisata Alam Batuputih Kota Bitung. Kegiatan dilaksanakan selama 10 bulan dari Januari sampai dengan Oktober 2010. Peserta kegiatan berjumlah 52 orang yang terdiri dari pemandu wisata alam dan calon pemandu yang berdomisili di sekitar kawasan konservasi di Kota Bitung. Kegiatan yang telah dilaksanakan meliputi Kegiatan yang telah dilakukan adalah pelatihan tentang birdwatching yang meliputi kegiatan-kegiatan: pemberian teori tentang metode pengenalan dan identifikasi burung dan praktek lapangan dalam penggunaan alat-alat birdwatching dan pengenalan serta identifikasi burung. Evaluasi dilaksanakan dengan metode pre-test dan pos-test untuk mengukur pengetahuan dasar tentang birdwatching dan uji keterampilan dengan parameter: kemampuan mengunakan binoluler, pembuatan sketsa burung, dan ketepatan identifikasi. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan: pre-tes rata-rata dari seluruh peserta adalah 4,8 dan hasil post-test rata-rata adalah 7,4; dan pengamatan penggunaan binoluler, pembuatan sketsa burung, dan ketepatan identifikasi rata-rata dari seluruh peserta adalah 90% kategori cukup dan 10% kategori baik. IDENTIFICATION AND OBSERVATION OF BIRDS FOR TANGKOKO ECOTOURISM GUIDES AT BITUNG CITY ABSTRACT A public service about training in identification and observation of birds for Tangkoko ecotourism guides at Bitung City. The aims of this activity were to improve their knowledge and skill in bird identification and observation. The activity was taken place at Tangkoko-Batuangus Nature Reserve and Batuputih Ecotourism Park, Bitung city during 10 months from January to october 2010.paricipants consisted of 52 members of ecotourism guides and candidates surrounding the conservation areas. asi di Kota Bitung. Kegiatan yang telah dilaksanakan meliputi training activities consisted of teaching in method on introduction and identification of birds, field practicing on bird-watching equipments, observation and identification of birds. Evaluation was done using pre-test and post-test method, and skills in bird-watching skill in using binocular, drawing bird morphology, and identification precisely. Results showed that: average of pre-test was 4.8 while the post-test was 7.4, the score of using binocular, drawing bird morphology, and identification precisely was 90% in moderate category and 10% in good category. AbstractWild bird conservation in the UK is a widely regarded as a success story. The populations of many endangered species have grown or at least stabilised, birds that were last seen in the UK over 100 years ago have been successfully re-introduced, and bird watching makes an increasingly important contribution to the rural economy in terms of employment and income. Nevertheless, some wild birds also generate costs and some deep rooted conflicts persist with other rural activities such as farming and game shooting. This paper describes a conceptual framework for understanding the costs and benefits of wild birds and, using wild goose conservation in the island of Islay as a case study, explores whether continued public investment in wild goose conservation is worthwhile from an economic perspective. The paper concludes with a discussion about future options for integrating wild bird conservation with sustainable rural development.

However, a bird pecking the feathers of another seldom gains obvious extrinsic reinforcement for this behaviour (the feather is not always eaten, or material pecked from the plumage). Two aspects of social learning that have received little attention are whether reinforcement of the bird performing the behaviour (the demonstrator) is required for the watching bird (the observer) to learn, and in addition, whether single or multiple exposures to the behaviour are required. In two experiments we used a model behaviour - operant key pecking - to examine the effects of reinforcement of demonstrators (experiment 1) and the effectiveness of repeated demonstrations (experiment 2) on social learning by domestic hens.

The present study comprises the biodiversity of birds in Gorewada International bio-park situated at north-west of Nagpur city with geographical location 21°11′N 79°2′E and a good habitat for avian biodiversity. Bird watching and recording were done from March 2011 to February 2014, in the morning and evening hours during Sunday and holidays. 190 species belonging to 128 genera, 51 families and 17 orders (Podicipediformes, Pelecaniformes, Ciconiiformes, Anseriformes, Falconiformes, Galliformes, Gruiformes, Charadriiformes, Columbiformes, Psittaciformes, Cuculiformes, Strigiformes, Caprimulgiformes, Apodiformes, Coraciiformes, Piciformes and Passeriformes) were recorded. The order Passeriformes is the largest order belonging to 20 families and 75 bird species. Out of total bird species, 89 (46.84%) are resident, 77 (40.53%) are resident migrant and 24 (12.63%) are migratory species. Forest region of this bio-park provides heterogeneity in vegetation and lake is rich in aquatic fauna and other food for avian species. Therefore, this region is well suitable for feeding, resting and roosting site for aves. The report obtains information regarding resident birds, migratory birds and resident migratory birds of Gorewada bio-park.

The aim of this study was to determine the ‘’ relative influence of habitat modification on bird assemblage’’. To estimate the ecological interest of reforestation on the Campus of Notre Dame du Kasaï site, the birds were photographed, identified and then compared to all species listed in Avibase of the region. The site hosts about 12.4% of species identified throughout the region. The following birds would be new to the Kananga area compared to Kasaï-Central bird Checklist: Bubulcus ibis, Upupa africana, Lanius collaris, Terpsiphone rufocinerea and Camaroptera brevicaudata. This study consists in demonstrating the impact of reforestation on wildlife, particularly birds. This aspect of applied biology is therefore part of the context of conservation biology. The publication of the species is a strategy for their visibility to lovers of eco-tourism based on bird watching. This could attract them and thus contribute to the economy of the region. It is on the basis of all this information that on the one hand, eco-tourism based on bird observations could develop throughout the Kasaï-Central province and on the other hand, strategies for the protection of vulnerable species will be proposed.

Knowing birds by their genies is a very difficult task for common people and it is also time-consuming work. Without any specific technology this work is as compared to impossible but by using deep machine learning all the tasks have become simpler. All the challenges are getting better with technology used, as we are using deep learning algorithms, with the help of it we can recognize different bird species using mobile application. The purpose of this mobile application is to recognize the bird images clicked by the user using CNN and give appropriate information about the bird to the user. This user-friendly application allows the user to upload an image of a bird and provides the user with real time species identification results. In this study, a total of 25 species are included.

The bird-watching community has activities to record and manage observation data. So far, important observational data has only been written in personal notes. These notes have the potential to be lost and not even published. This method, which is still done manually, must be more consistent in detailed information shared with various bird-watching communities. To solve this problem, it is necessary to develop a website-based bird observation community information system to make it easier for admins to manage bird data and for bird watchers to manage observation data. The information system was developed using the PHP programming language with the help of the Laravel framework and using the Bootstrap framework to implement the program code developed. A website-based bird observation community information system has been successfully developed and used to make it easier for admins to manage bird data and manage observation data. Based on the results of the system evaluation by users, overall users were satisfied using the bird watching community information system that was built. Komunitas pengamatan burung memiliki kegiatan mencatat dan mengelola data pengamatan. Data penting pengamatan tersebut selama ini hanya tertulis dalam catatan pribadi. Catatan tersebut berpotensi hilang bahkan tidak terpublikasi. Cara yang masih dilakukan secara manual tersebut menyebabkan kurangnya konsistensi detail informasi yang dibagikan ke berbagai komunitas pengamatan burung. Sebagai penyelesaian masalah tersebut, perlu dikembangkan sistem informasi komunitas pengamatan burung berbasis website yang digunakan untuk memudahkan admin melakukan pengelolaan data burung serta memudahkan para pengamat burung melakukan pengelolaan data pengamatan. Sistem informasi dikembangkan menggunakan bahasa pemrograman PHP dengan bantuan framework Laravel dan menggunakan framework Bootstrap untuk implementasi kode program yang dikembangkan. Sistem informasi komunitas pengamatan burung berbasis website berhasil dikembangkan dan digunakan untuk memudahkan admin melakukan pengelolaan data burung dan pengelolaan data pengamatan. Berdasarkan hasil evaluasi sistem oleh para pengguna, secara keseluruhan pengguna sudah merasa puas menggunakan sistem informasi komunitas pengamatan burung yang dibangun.

Joint with variety of birds, diversity of flora was also found in the protected area of village forest and these resources are main tools to attract the tourists. One of the basic elements cultural tourism is the availability of cultural facility, such as gallery or shows room. The availability of galleries or showrooms are the basic elements needed for this cultural tourism. The purpose of this training is to introduce the diversity of plant through collection of herbarium around the village. The PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) methods are used in this course, which is the local community become the main actors. The result showed that local people can make dry herbarium through the process such as pressing, drying, and handling. Herbs that can be made herbarium is consists of 17 family and 9 species, grouped into 4 species group of Liliopsida, and 13 species group of Magnoliopsida. Purpose Birds are biological indicators for environment health in which their sightings and abundance could reflect a certain situation or become evaluation tool for co-existence of another species. Here, the study aims to observe urban settlements with substantial forestation, may it be artificial or natural, and the occurrence of bird assemblage across time. Considering the foraging activity of birds hardcoded with sustainability, their spatial overlap resultant into service provision, which can mean, baseline occurrence or an expected encounter equates to support system for ecological vigour. Design/methodology/approach From this, birds could indicate external environment vulnerability related to climatic fluctuations, whereby documentation of their arrival across spatial-temporal regimes allowed us to understand their distribution between residential and forested areas. Findings Though urban birds are abundant and viewed less important for conservation, the existence of certain species such as long-tailed shrike and little green pigeon disclose the types of food they consume and, the other types of birds attracted to their prey. With regard, the sightings of these birds would mean an encounter with 20 or more other species at a bird watching occasion, though it is limited to the sightings of urban birds. Originality/value Subject to criteria for green space, attaining plenty of bird species provides understanding of food availability, the support services and opportunity for urban birds to thrive in midst the opportunity for resources such as food, perching grounds and sufficient numbers of counterparts to reproduce into healthy urban bird populations.

A total of 159 species of birds under 102 genera, 36 families and 13 orders were observed. Among the non-passerines (83 species) maximum number of species is under the family Ardeidae. Three species remained unidentified. Lowland Forest at the complex of Bulusaraung mountain in the Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park is one of important habitat of birds in South Sulawesi. This study aimed to identify bird’s diversity in the Lowland Forest of Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park for ecotourism purposes. This research was carried out for 2 months between April and May 2018. The data were gathered by using line transect method. The data were analyzed by using Shannon-Weiner diversity index, Evenness index, Margalef species richness index, and Sorensen Similarity index. The result of the study showed that, there were 23 species of birds found in the three lines of observation tracks. There were 19 species found in Balleanging, 12 species in Kattokaddaro and 15 species found in Tompobulu.The highest value of bird diversity index was found in Tompobulu (H '= 1,73) followed by Balleanging (H' = 1,54) and Kattokaddaro routes (H '= 1,43). Therefore, the diversity of bird species in the three observation pathways can be used as objects and attractions in the development of ecotourism based on bird watching in wildlife conservation efforts.

It is a good habitat for birds and herpetofauna biodiversity. Bird watching and recording were done from January 2014 to December 2017. 241 species belonging to 152 genera, 46 families and 17 orders (Podicipediformes, Pelecaniformes, Ciconiiformes, Anseriformes, Falconiformes, Galliformes, Gruiformes, Charadriiformes, Columbiformes, Psittaciformes, Cuculiformes, Strigiformes, Caprimulgiformes, Apodiformes, Coraciiformes, Piciformes and Passeriformes) were recorded. The order Passeriformes is the largest order belonging to 16 families and 90 bird species. Out of total bird species, 109 (45.23%) are resident, 95 (39.42%) are resident migrant and 37 (15.35%) are migratory species. Wainganga Valley is of critical importance for Maharashtra to preserve its forests, wildlife, and tribal population dependent on it. Present investigation carried out to prepare an inclusive checklist of bird species and their ecological status in the study area.

Birdwatching is a very popular and increasing leisure activity, and the study and observation of birds is more popular in the morning due to the greater activity among birds at that time of day. The aim of our study was to find out whether there was a relationship between the circadian preference of observers and their favourite bird species and whether it was influenced by such factors as professional status, age and gender. In an e-mail survey we asked a total of 433 Polish ornithologists (professionals) or birdwatchers (non-professionals) for their morningness–eveningness preferences (four categories) and favourite (open choice) bird species and received 143 responses. The temporal (circadian) preferences of respondents declined from early morning (35.7%) to evening/nighttime (11.4%). Circadian preference categories differed significantly by age, with early morning respondents significantly older. These preference categories did not differ significantly in terms of response time to the survey invitation or in the percentage of their favourite birds that were categorised as daytime birds. A total of 204 species were identified as favourite birds of which 34 species were mentioned by five or more respondents, with only two, the common crane Grus grus and the Eurasian pygmy owl Glaucidium passerinum mentioned by more than 10% of respondents. The white stork Ciconia ciconia was more popular with professionals than non-professionals and the swift Apus apus less popular. A significant gender × circadian preference interaction was detected for the percentage of favourite birds categorised as daytime birds, with fewer daytime birds among early morning female recorders. The presented results are obviously of a correlative nature, but open the door for further, more advanced study and suggest there may be a need to investigate temporal biases when analysing citizen-based data.

Ethnic people throughout the globe are engaged in the conservation of biodiversity. The objective of this study was to measure the avifaunal diversity in heterogeneous forest and paddy fields surrounding the Barachaka tribal village of West Bengal, India and the prospect of development of ecotourism spot in this area. The study was conducted during June and July of 2019 and 2020. A total of 47 bird species belonging to 27 families were identified and recorded during the span of study. Among these bird species, Asian open bill stork (Anastomus oscitans) is predominant in the heterogeneous forest of this village and they usually used this place as a breeding ground during the rainy season. The study reveals that the safety and food security provided by the villagers encourage these birds to prepare colonial nests in trees very near to the human habitation. Shannon-Wiener diversity index value was recorded 2.49 within village forest and 2.33 in the paddy field during June 2019 and July 2019 and 2.62 within village forest and 2.47 in the paddy field during June 2020 and July 2020. Results obtained from the questionnaire survey revealed that tribal people of this village are directly attached to bird conservation in their area and these tribal people protect the bird generation after generation through their traditional knowledge. The community-based bird monitoring programs may protect birds as well as wildlife and encourage researchers who may gather scientific knowledge from these ethnic people. The village under study has the prospective to develop into a good bird watching site, where bird lovers may watch the birds in nature and thereby helping the socio-economic development of the tribal people of this village.

Abstract (sommario):

It’s Saturday night, I’m ten or eleven years old and I’m watching the film To Kill a Mocking Bird on our old TV in the basement. My family is upstairs watching Hockey Night in Canada on the new TV — the one that comes with a turntable and AM/FM radio, all wrapped up in an oak cabinet the size of a coffin. I follow the film pretty well for someone who doesn’t understand yet what rape is. Racism — another of the film’s big themes and also a concept that is new to me — is easier to grasp. The story of this film is complicated but clear, and the experience of watching it — it’ll be another three years before I read the novel in high school — contains everything that I now want children watching theatre to experience.
