Abstract (sommario):
The research investigates the bases of succession planning in family businesses (FB), especially the cultural background of the phenomenon. The significance of the issue under study comes from the importance of family business in every economy and the delicate matter of succession as an important business development element. The research is based on the observation that the succession determinants are still outside the mainstream of the research. In this study, it is hypothesized that succession planning is influenced by cultural background. The investigation is done by performing a comparative analysis of family businesses’ potential successors from the culturally distant countries: Poland and Indonesia. An empirical survey-based method is applied to investigate the younger generation’s involvement in preparations for the transfer of the family business. The differences in the approach to the younger generation’s succession identified in the survey are not related to such factors as age, size, or succession experience of the business. Instead, there are premises to say that the differences come from the family and business culture based on national specificity. First-hand support for the cultural embeddedness of FB succession planning was found. Furthermore, the results also reaffirm the doubts concerning the importance of post-communist countries’ economic transformation for succession planning. The empirical study confirms the expectations that the specificity of cultural background in Poland could be especially harmful to succession planning in the family business.

Abstract (sommario):
Family business studies have focused on succession because of the incidence of family business failure and the importance of family businesses within the US economy. This study furthers the understanding of family business failure by making the distinction between succession planning (the management task of transitioning leadership) and estate planning (the task of transitioning financial assets and managing federal estate tax obligations) and using this distinction to better understand family business discontinuance. This study of 749 heirs of failed family businesses demonstrates that inadequate estate planning is more often associated with family business failure than is poor succession planning.

Abstract (sommario):
With the inception of a two-step forestry plan, forest management planning takes on a new, more important, meaning. The new plan aims to optimise production performance in forestry enterprises and is strongly oriented towards economic considerations. In the medium term the emphasis is on strategic planning and operative planning takes place within the annual plan. The content of modern forest management planning is very different to prevailing management plans and calls for new solutions. The examples of forest enterprises of the City of Winterthur(2000 ha) and the Exchequer of Württemberg (5200 ha) serve to show how – apart from traditional policies – a business plan in accordance with modern management doctrine becomes the main steering instrument. In smaller forest enterprises it probably makes good sense to convert the business plan into a strategic planning instrument with a strong economic orientation which, in addition to sovereign considerations, strongly builds on the goals of ownership. Strategic planning will be an important task for the manager. The influence of the state is limited to those aspects which concern binding regulations in the public interest. The supply of information needs to be partially re-regulated with regard to survey levels, accuracy, repartition of coasts and responsibilities.

Abstract (sommario):
Financial planning has become an integral part of corporate development strategy in businesses in developed and emerging economies. Despite the rapid spread of advanced business practices, enterprises in transition and developing economies still have been lagging behind in absorbing some elements of modern business conduct skills and methods. This weakness is visible in corporate planning and forecasting practices. Although key elements of the market economy have already been introduced and a business environment is functioning favorably, enterprises in transition economies of the post-Soviet area are facing difficulties in applying and adapting changeable and regularly updating economic climate due to changing business psychology in the society and ongoing gradual structural reforms. Entrepreneurs and finance officers possess basic knowledge and understanding of income-cost and input-output planning. But corporate and business expansion planning, forecasting and risk analysis skills are out of their capabilities when it comes to applying in decision-making processes. It should be admitted that people’s business mind changed significantly and nowadays business sector is a backbone of any post-communist or transition economy. However, it does not suffice to run the business, to stay active in the market and to keep the stable financial structure. In this paper, we examined the attitudes of decision-makers of 24 enterprises in Uzbekistan towards financial planning and its possible benefits for enterprises they are running. The Likert scale-based survey showed that attitudes towards the financial planning are positive since its effect on corporate policy matters is treated comparatively less favorable.

Abstract (sommario):
Strategic planning is a business tool that small and medium businesses need in todays dynamic and highly competitive business environment. It has a potential to cushion these enterprises from such unpredictable harsh business conditions. The purpose of this paper was to establish the relationship between strategic planning practices and business performance among SMEs in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Data were analysed from 200 useable questionnaires that were distributed to SME owners/managers. Factor analysis, correlations, and regression techniques were used in order to extract the dimensions of strategic planning and their relationships with business performance. Environmental scanning, business mission and vision, formality of strategic plans, evaluation and control, informing sourcing, strategy implementation incentives, employee participation, and time horizons emerged as strategic planning dimensions. The results confirm that strategic planning has a positive association and predictive relationship with the performance of SMEs. The results of this study can serve as a guide to SME owners and managers to properly implement strategic planning practices which will enable them to propel and sustain their businesses in turbulent and uncertain business environments.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose- There is a need to develop a framework that will improve the understandings of business planning and performance and its effects on growth particularly during the stages of small business development. The study attempted to fill in the gap stated. Design - The single case qualitative study relates small business growth with strategic planning where financial performance, market share, sales, and profits or instead return on investment is used to measure the growth. Existing literature fails to establish a concrete relationship between strategic planning and growth of small businesses which indicates a gap in the literature that will help understand the steps of managing the organizational transition of small business growth. Findings - The study fails to establish a significant relationship between formal planning and transitional growth, but instead found the influence of the planning process in communication the owner’s goals, vision, mission, and intentions to both internal and external stakeholders of small businesses. The study influence of the shared vision with customers on making them loyal and advertisers through word of mouth. The study revealed how customers’ word of mouth increased the customer base of small businesses thereby increasing the product demand and eventual expansion of capacity leading to the growth of small businesses. The growth of small businesses will result in an increased reduction in the unemployment rate which will reduce the poverty rate in the Nigerian economy. Practical Implications- Answering the primary and supporting questions will help small business owners to understand how strategic planning is essential in the transitional growth of their businesses.

Abstract (sommario):
Western research suggests that family business owners must prepare for leadership succession in a systematic manner to ensure continuity. A review of the succession experiences of eight family businesses in the Southeast Asian country of the Philippines seems to indicate that the key to smooth succession for group-oriented families is not entirely dependent on succession planning. Rather, a family business's smooth succession depends on the succession process being consistent with family values. In fact, valuing the preservation of the family unit helps to avoid the ill effects that normally accompany the absence of succession planning.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of preparation level of heirs and the relationship between family and business members on the performance of family business in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative research design involving the use of a survey questionnaire was implemented to investigate the influences of succession planning factors on the performance of family business in SMEs. The survey was conducted on 50 family business successors in Malaysian SMEs. Findings The result showed that the two studied factors – preparation level of heirs and the relationship between family and business members – have a positive impact on the performance of family business. Research limitations/implications The research concentrated on the performance of family business in SMEs in Malaysia’s southern region. The generalization therefore must be made very cautiously to the overall Malaysian SMEs. Practical implications The findings help family businesses to better understand the importance of the preparation level of heirs and the relationship between family and business members on business performance. This study shows the importance of key factors influencing succession planning so that the successor to the family business can bring the family firm to the next stage of success. Strategic Vision and a clear definition of Business Success are vital elements of strategic planning for all creative businesses and cultural enterprises. A Vision sets out the aspirations for the future of a creative business or cultural enterprise. This Strategic Vision is the ‘dream’ of the future, a picture painted in words, which is intended to inspire people by appealing to the heart as well as the head. One of the leader’s main functions is to inspire people towards a vision. This is ‘Inspirational Leadership’. A Strategic Vision must be a Shared Vision, embraced by everyone in the business or organisation - not only the leader, the senior management team and key staff.

This article is about an inexpensive and easily adaptable inventory maintenance system developed specifically for small business using the commonly available Microsoft Office Excel program. This paper discusses a new system for inventory management that was developed in conjunction with a small business to determine the value, volume, and contribution margins of the product mix. Other entrepreneurs have subsequently used this system for decision-making concerning the allocation of scarce resources, inventory items stocked, determination of the profitability of individual businesses, and the future potential of the business. Inventory in small business is a concern for a number of reasons including: existing management systems are expensive; turnover is a major factor in profitability; and profitability is directly attributable to stocking a saleable product mix. Entrepreneurs must optimize their resources to engender profitability and stability by selling sufficient quantities of desirable products at acceptable prices.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examined a variety of predictors as they related to survival of small businesses and their perceived success. Specifically, we assessed the relationships of perceptions of success and survival of small businesses with the motivational sources to begin the business, the four requirements cited by Drucker (1985), marketing and business planning activity, financial base, handling of business problems and identified sources of assistance with those problems, and demographics or business backgrounds of the small business owners. 128 small business owners representing the service, manufacturing, and retail sectors were interviewed. The marketing variables were the only ones that were predictive of success, suggesting the need for a more comprehensive framework to assess success of small businesses.

Abstract (sommario):
In order to solve environmental problems, a transition from conventional business to environmentally conscious business (eco-business) is urgently needed. Support for finding eco-business ideas will help to promote this transition. As a step in this direction, this paper takes an approach that provides a business designer with general rules and prerequisites extracted from existing eco-businesses. This paper collects 130 examples of eco-businesses in Japan and then investigates and classifies them to develop general guidelines and checklists for success. As a result, four kinds of customer value provided by eco-businesses, eight rules that couple the the reduction of environmental load of society with the four customer values, and eight rules for cutting business costs are derived. A tool for planning a new eco-businesses is also proposed.

Abstract (sommario):

Nowadays, family businesses are of high number in countires and contribute to the development of the economy. This research was conducted due to the importance of family business survival and it focuses on factors that affect their performance. Recently, family businesses have been identified as one of the concerns in the global entrepreneurial development agenda. This is because of the existing problem which is caused by family business owners avoid planning and treat succession as a problem instead of an opportunity. This impacts the continuity of the family-owned business. This research is made to emphasize the importance of planning and the drawbacks of negative bias in viewing succession as a problem. This study is expected to make family business owners understand the importance of planning and treating succession as an opportunity to achieve continuity. Qualitative research method was chosen as the method of the research with first generation family business owners as the key informants. Three key informants are chosen; Mr. Untoro A. Suryadi, Mr. IS and Mr. AS. In conclusion, family business should stop strategizing succession and treat succession as a practice.

Abstract (sommario):
Four general stages appear to be common in the organisational life-cycle of small businesses in Papua New Guinea (PNG): Formation, Early Growth, Later Growth and Maturity. Owner/managers confront different set of problems as the life-cycle of their businesses progressed inevitably shifting their operational and management priorities, degree of involvement in running the business, and the scope of management. External environmental problems appear predominant over the life-cycle particularly in the formation and survival stages. Internal problems predominate the late growth and maturity stages. Planning emerged as the biggest problem of small businesses in PNG. At the formation stages, developing a viable business plan for the sourcing of funds and establishing a direction for the business was the major planning problem. Marketing planning problems were more prevalent in the growth stages, and financial planning problems appeared at both the formation and maturity stages. Other problems, such as poor customer contact and weak and fragmented market, spanned the life cycle stages. The organisational life-cycle concept was shown to be adaptable across cultures but problems at different stages of the organisational life-cycle differed across cultures and level of economic development of nations.

Abstract (sommario):
Subject area Strategic Planning for family businesses. Study level/applicability MBA family businesses courses and/or executive education courses that focus on family businesses. The case can be used in introductory sessions related to family business strategy. Case overview This case tells the story of two generations of coffee plant growers at Hacienda Flandes in Colombia’s coffee region. It describes external and internal factors that affected the family business from 1970 to 2013. The case presents antecedents and consequences of environmental circumstances and family members’ decisions that drive this business from boom to decline and later on to its potential reinvention. Through an analysis of this family-owned coffee plantation across generations, students are expected to understand the importance of strategic planning in family businesses, in a changing and competitive environment. Family businesses in emerging economies are the most common type of businesses. In Latin America, most of family businesses might be younger than those in Europe and even in North America. Therefore, family businesses in these economies can be going through or will soon go through a succession. Succession success rate is low, regardless of the culture or country in which the family business develops. This case deals with the preparation (or lack of preparation) of the next generation in family businesses management and its consequences and helps students suggest alternatives and better decisions to run family businesses in an emerging economy. Expected learning outcomes Students will be able to know and explain the concept of a family business as a dynamic system: firm, family and individuals, each one with actions and outcomes; analyze opportunities for and threats to family businesses across generations; and formulate strategies that balance business and family demands. Supplementary materials The teaching note has specific reading materials to support class discussion.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Substantial evidence shows that strategic marketing planning leads to increased small business performance, yet most small business owners do not draw up a plan for their businesses. This paper presents the results of a secondary research survey on strategic marketing planning of SMEs in South Africa. They indicate that while the higher performing SMEs give a higher priority to marketing than to other business functions, they are still sales- or production-oriented. The higher performing SMEs are more aware of strategic planning tools. They compete with value-added products and good buyer-seller relationships. The findings suggest that broad, small business marketing principles to some extent contribute to the success of SMEs.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess the resilience of tourism businesses in a coastal city in the USA to coastal hazards and severe weather events. The researchers developed a framework for assessing the resilience of coastal tourism businesses and demonstrated the applicability of the framework using the case study of Virginia Beach. Design/methodology/approach Researchers conducted structured, face-to-face interviews with tourism business owners and managers, using an instrument based on an assessment framework with five components: vulnerability, business planning and operations, preparation and recovery planning, communications and workforce. In total, 32 participants representing 42 businesses in the accommodations, restaurants, retail and activities sectors at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront were interviewed. Findings Many participants did not feel highly vulnerable due to structural mitigation efforts taken by the city. Larger businesses undertook more strategic planning, preparedness and recovery planning. All businesses had effective ways of communicating with staff and customers, and through membership in local organizations, had access to resources. While not all businesses prioritized training for employees, they recognized the importance of providing support for staff during severe weather events. Originality/value As one of the few studies on tourism resilience in the USA, this study highlights the variability of resilience among tourism businesses within a destination.

Abstract (sommario):
Environmental education is seen as a key driver of small business environmental management, yet little is known about the activities small business owner-managers are undertaking to reduce their environmental impact or in what areas they may need education. Therefore, research that can identify environmental management activities being undertaken in small businesses may provide potential targets for education. As intention to behave in a particular way is often predicated on some sort of planning, extending the research questions to ascertain if planning is occurring and its impact on environmental behaviour in small businesses is also seen as critical. The results revealed that, overall, the level of environmental activity in small business was low and that less than a quarter had an environmental plan. In addition, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and purchasing green energy are not areas of engagement for most small businesses and are recommended as potential targets for education.
