L'œuvre de Erri De Luca s'insère dans le mouvement de la Littérature napolitaine de l'après-guerre, mouvement qui se caractérise par la présence récurrente de la ville de Naples. La ville y est souvent traitée comme un des protagonistes à part entière de la narration, ville effrayante et monstrueuse qui phagocyte ses enfants. Erri De Luca nous plonge dans la ville de son enfance, ravagée par la guerre et la misère, et dans l'histoire de sa famille. Il brosse ainsi une série de tableaux polyédriques et réalistes de la cité parthénopéenne où sont tour à tour évoqués l'extrême indigence des bassi, la froide luminosité d'une Mergellina américanisée, ou bien la mythique île de Ischia. En quittant Naples, l'écrivain semble vouloir se couper de ses origines. Pourtant, une grande partie de son œuvre témoigne de la présence obsessionnelle de la ville, dans une éternelle quête à la retrouver. A travers le parcours de l'homme, son engagement politique dans un groupe d'extrême gauche, son travail de maçon, ses voyages à l'étranger en tant que bénévole, ses lectures et traductions de la Bible, va se construire l'identité de l'écrivain. Ainsi, en cherchant à décrire Naples dans sa réalité, Erri De Luca finit, par la force de l'imaginaire, à produire à la fois d'autres images, signes de sa réconciliation avec la ville et d'autres mythes, expressions métaphoriques de l'acte d'écriture. C'est cette transcription de l'imaginaire fantasmé qui le singularise par rapport à ses contemporains
Erri De Luca's works could fit into the post-war Neapolitan literature movement, a movement characterized by the recurrent presence of the city of Naples. The city is there often treated as a full part protagonist of the narration, a monstrous and frightening city, overwhelming its children. Erri De Luca plunges us in the city of his childhood, prostrated by war and extreme poverty, and in the story of his family. He thus gives us a series of polyhedric and realistic pictures of the Neapolitan city, evoking by turns the extreme destitution of the bassi, the cold luminosity of an Americanized Mergellina or else the mythic island of Ischia. As he leaves Naples, he seems to be willing to go away from his origins. And yet a major part of his works bears witness of the obsessional presence of the city, in an eternal quest of finding it again. All through the man's evolution, his political commitment to an extreme left-wing group, his job as a bricklayer, his trips abroad as a benevolent, his readings and translations of the Bible will the writer's identity build up. Thus, trying to describe Naples in his reality, Erri De Luca finally produces, through the power of imaginary, both other pictures - signs of his reconciliation with the city, and other myths - metaphoric expressions of the act of writing. This transcription of imaginary makes him conspicuous from his contemporaries

El trabajo se asienta sobre en el estudio y la edición de un libro de contabilidad del siglo XV Libre de la magnifica señora Caterina Llull començat el 2 de jener de 1472 compilado por una mujer catalana Caterina Llull y Çabastida que vivió entre Siracusa y Barcelona y que se conserva en el Archivo del Centro Borja de S. Cugat del Vallès dentro del fondo archivístico privado de la familia Requesens. La investigación de la fuente mencionada se ha completado con otros documentos del mismo archivo familiar y con la documentación de otros archivos catalanes permitiendome, además, profundizar en algunos aspectos económicos y sociales de la Sicilia oriental del siglo XV, y llevar a cabo un análisis más amplio de las características y de los diferentes aspectos del así llamado "Medioevo en femenino". La tesis està dividida en tres partes: estudio paleografico-codocologico, socio-economico y transcripciòn completa del manuscrito con indice onomàstico.
The work is based on the study and the edition of a 15th century's account book, the Libre de la magnifica señora Caterina Llull començat el 2 de jener de 1472, written out by Caterina Llull y Cabastida who lived halfway between Siracusa and Barcellona. The manuscript is kept in the Borja Centre Archives in S. Cugat del Valles into the Requenses family's private records. The research of the above-said book has been enriched by other documents coming from the same family archives and from other catalan archives, and this has allowed me to investigate some economic and social aspects related to the eastern Sicily during the 15th century and, moreover, to carry out a wider analysis of the distinctive and different sides of the so-called "Woman's Middle Ages". The thesis is divided into three parts: the paleographic and codicological study, the social-economic examination, and the complete transcription of the manuscript with onomastic index.

This thesis seeks to trace the unique journey of Cater in a da Siena (1347- 1380) from a venerator of saints to a venerated saint. In doing so, the thesis presents a detailed case study of the importance of the cult of saints in medieval Europe. In order to do this, the thesis looks first at Caterina's relationship with the cult of saints through her veneration of Paul, Mary Magdalen and the Virgin Mary. This allows for a close case study of Caterina as a venerator through an examination of her own testimony in the Letters, Dialogo and her Prayers. The second section focuses on the creation of her own cult by Raimondo da Capua (1330-1399) and Tommaso Caffarini (1350- 1434). This section examines particular events and qualities such as Caterina's mystical death and her reception of the stigmata. These events were included by Raimondo and Caffarini in their hagiographies of the saint: Legenda Jvfaior, the Leggenda Minore and the Libellus. The final section explores Caterina's role as a venerated saint by examining the lives ofChiara Gambacorta (1362-1420), Giovanni Dominici (1356-1419) and Lucia Brocadelli da Narni (1476- 1544). Each life reveals a particular connection that led these venerators to Saint Caterina

Caterina Percoto, auteure de nouvelles champêtres, est née et a passé l'essentiel de sa vie à San Lorenzo di Soleschiano, village du Frioul, à un moment crucial de l'histoire de l'Italie, le Risorgimento, qui aboutit à l'unification italienne. L'objet de cette thèse est de faire découvrir, à travers sa biographie et son oeuvre, cette écrivaine qui reste encore largement méconnue en dehors de sa région d'origine, en la replaçant en particulier dans le contexte historique du Risorgimento. Dans une première partie, les éléments proposés pour une biographie de Caterina Percoto permettent d'éclairer sa personnalité et son oeuvre. Il s'agit en particulier de montrer la tension constante entre les aspirations de cette femme au tempérament rebelle et les contraintes sociales, familiales et matérielles qui s'y opposent. La prise de conscience précoce de la condition subalterne de la femme, la nécessité de vivre à la campagne et de gérer la propriété agricole familiale, la rencontre avec les milieux libéraux et patriotes du Royaume de Lombardie-Vénétie, sont autant d'éléments qui trouvent une résonance dans son oeuvre. Dans une deuxième partie, l'étude des nouvelles italiennes de Caterina Percoto, met en évidence l'attention portée aux problématiques de son époque et l'engagement de l'écrivaine dans l'élaboration d'une nouvelle société italienne. Son oeuvre reflète en effet sa prise de position pour une réforme sociale qui conduise à une société plus juste et solidaire, intégrant dignement tous ses membres, femmes et paysans inclus, ainsi que sa dénonciation de la domination autrichienne dans la Péninsule et sa revendication patriotique d'un État italien indépendant et unitaire
Caterina Percoto, writer of countryside short stories, was born and spent most of her life in San Lorenzo di Soleschiano, a village of Frioul, at an essential moment in the history of Italy, the Risorgimento, which resulted in the Italian unification. The purpose of this thesis is, through her biography and works, to make discover this writer who remains largely unknown out of her region of origin, notably with placing her back in the historical context of the Risorgimento. First, the elements proposed for Caterina Percoto's biography enable us to highlight her personality and works. The purpose is more specifically to show the constant tension between the aspirations of this reckless woman and the social, family, and material constraints which stand in opposition. The early awareness of the inferior position of women, the necessity to live in the countryside and manage the family farm, her meeting with the liberal and patriotic circles of the Lonbardy-Venetia Kingdom, all these elements find an echo in her works. Second, studying Caterina Percoto's Italian short stories draws attention to the great issues of her time and the commitment of this writer in creating a new Italian society. Indeed her works reveal her engagement in favour of a social reform which would end up in a society with more justice and solidarity, a society where all members, peasants and women included, would stand together with dignity. But they also illustrate her denouncing of Austrian dominion over the Peninsula and her patriotic claim for an independent and united Italian state

Il progetto di ricerca ha come oggetto il "Guta lag" e lo "Statuto della gilda di Santa Caterina". Databile al XIII secolo il primo e al 1443 il secondo, sono i due testi di carattere legislativo più estesi scritti in gutnico, la lingua parlata nel Medioevo sull’isola svedese di Gotland. La tesi fornisce una nuova edizione di entrambi i testi nonché la loro prima traduzione italiana, volta ad ampliare il quadro delle leggi nordiche tradotte in italiano. Un riguardo particolare è stato rivolto all’analisi delle affinità linguistiche tra i due testi e, soprattutto, al lessico conservato nello "Statuto della gilda di Santa Caterina", studio che ha consentito di proporre nuove ipotesi etimologiche per alcuni lessemi gutnici.

Leonardo's Virgin of the Rocks (or Madonna of the Rocks, c.1486) is a masterpiece. Scholars have been unclear, however, about the unconventional cave setting and where Leonardo's inspiration came from. The Song of Songs mentions a beautiful bride being invited to come "into the wall of rocks," and the apocryphal Gospel of James (written around 150 A.D.) tells the story of Jesus being born in a cave outside of Bethlehem. But Leonardo's own personal cave experience in 1481 spurred his desire to find literature that placed Jesus' birth in a cave, or a "wall of rocks." This thesis focuses on a specific discourse prominent in Leonardo scholarship which has taken place over the years, chiefly concerning Leonardo's strange cave background in the Virgin of the Rocks.

La tesi si occupa della narrativa rusticale friulana di Caterina Percoto ed Ippolito Nievo. Allo stato attuale, non si possiedono cognizioni incontrovertibili per stabilire se i due scrittori si conoscessero personalmente, tuttavia, nei loro scritti incentrati sulla vita di campagna è possibile riscontrare numerose affinità tematiche che l’elaborato si propone di indagare. Innanzitutto, sono fornite alcune informazioni sul genere rusticale, sviluppato in Europa a partire dagli anni Quaranta del XIX secolo. Successivamente, si entra nel merito della produzione letteraria di Percoto e Nievo, saggiando i punti in comune nella rappresentazione del paesaggio, delle tradizioni, del dialetto e nell’acuto ritratto del tessuto sociale regionale. Tali elementi consentono di evidenziare delle convergenze ideologiche tra i due autori, come la funzione civile della letteratura e l’idea che le realtà locali fornissero un contributo essenziale per l’Italia in fieri. Infine, nella tesi si ritiene che tra le pagine rusticali di Percoto e Nievo vi siano dei rapporti di intertestualità, tali da permettere di ipotizzare che i due scrittori si leggessero, traendo reciprocamente feconde suggestioni per la loro narrativa.

Caterina Sforza, Countess of Forlì from 1480 to 1500, was an intrepid and shrewd ruler, a mother, a lover, a woman with an eager interest in every field of knowledge, especially in science and experiments. Throughout her whole life, she devoted herself to experimenting and collecting hundreds of alchemical, cosmetic and medical recipes in a manuscript today known as “Experimenti”. This paper will include two chapters: in the first one, a biography of Caterina Sforza will be presented, together with a paragraph dedicated to her passion for botany and chemistry, which represent the foundation for her collection of recipes. Then, the reader will find a narration of the many changes of ownership and adventurous vicissitudes her manuscript experienced, thanks to which it is today possible to access Caterina’s remedies. The second chapter will contain the translation into present-day English of six recipes found in “Experimenti”. Each translation will be followed by the historical-linguistic analysis of some key words extracted from the original recipes: the analysis will base on the comparison between their Renaissance Italian translation and their current English meaning and spelling. An essential tool for this will be John Florio’s dictionary, first published in 1598 and considered the first extensive Italian-English dictionary. The aim of this paper is not only to make Caterina’s experiments accessible to an English public, but also to explore the development of the English language on different levels. Firstly, its evolution in time, from Early Modern English to today’s English. Secondly, its evolution in space, taking into consideration its immense spread all over the world through colonization (which, at the time Caterina Sforza and John Florio were alive, had only just begun), and the consequent many varieties of English existing now. Thirdly, its evolution with regard to the Italian language and culture.

L’obiettivo di questa tesi è l’analisi dell’intervento di restauro del Convento delle Sante Caterina e Barbara a Santarcangelo di Romagna eseguito tra aprile 2011 e il novembre 2013. Il Convento si trova in pieno centro storico ed è il risultato di una lunga serie di modifiche e ampliamenti che hanno portato alla sua completa integrazione con il tessuto circostante. L'intervento di restauro analizzato ha come obiettivo l'apertura di una parte del Convento al contesto urbano, con funzione di struttura ad uso ricettivo. La sua funzione non riesce più ad essere mantenuta a causa del sempre più ridotto numero di religiosi, che rischia di condannarlo all’abbandono, dopo che per secoli è stato luogo di formazione e di custodia della storia locale. Nel Capitolo 1 si percorre la storia del convento e delle sue modifiche, avvenute dagli inizi del 1500. Nel Capitolo 2 verranno esposti gli interventi di restauro attuati sull’Ala Ovest (Foresteria), prendendo in considerazione le lavorazioni sulla copertura, le modifiche degli interni e degli impianti. Verranno poi elencate diverse soluzioni ancora non attuate per il restauro scientifico della Chiesa annessa. Nel Capitolo 3 verranno citate le normative di riferimento sul quale si basano gli interventi di restauro. Nel Capitolo 4 si formuleranno le conclusioni relative alle lavorazioni attuate per la Foresteria.

Abstract: This study investigates the conservation status, previous intervention, executive techniques and pigment materials of the painting “SPOSALIZIO DI S. CATERINA”, attributed to Adriaen Isenbrant back to 16th century. The analysis was carried out based on the combination of scientific examination and restoration exploration. The scientific examination includes both in-situ non-invasive techniques and laboratory micro-destructive techniques. Non-invasive examination consists of the application of ultraviolet fluorescence (UVF), infrared reflectography (IRR), infrared false color (IRFC) and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF), whereas micro-destructive analysis comprises optical microscope (OM). The obtained results revealed that the painting was in a relatively good condition with several times of previous restoration, it was painted with typical Flemish painting techniques and materials in 16th century: a panel made of chestnut wood, a preparation layer composed of lead white colored in pale grey and brownish-orange, few of underdrawings and some pentimenti, with the palette composed of cinnabar and red ochre for red, verdigris or malachite for green, azurite for blue and yellow ocher for yellow. Moreover, this study provides an evidence that restoration, in particular during the cleaning of the painted surface and panel restoration process, is also acting as a very useful tool for painting investigation, being complementary with scientific examination, therefore it is of necessity to correctly and timely gather the information during the restoration process.

El Convent de Santa Caterina, dels dominics, va ser un dels més importants de Barcelona. Fundat l’any 1219, va ser enderrocat per ordre del municipi el 1836, tot i que ja es trobava en molt mal estat i desocupat després de la bullanga del 25 de juliol del 1835, que el va cremar parcialment. Tot i calcular que la meitat del fons de la seva biblioteca es va destruir o dispersar, actualment s’han identificat prop de 6.000 edicions que en procedeixen, dipositades al CRAI Biblioteca de Reserva de la Universitat de Barcelona arran de la desamortització. Va ser una característica singular del convent el fet de trobar-se estretament vinculat a la ciutat, a través no només de la seva activitat pastoral i de predicació, sinó també de les institucions d’ensenyament i acadèmiques que s’hi trobaven, així com de les diferents confraries que l’havien elegit com a seu. La biblioteca va constituir una basa important en la destacada participació de Santa Caterina en la vida cultural barcelonina, i en el programa de reivindicació del paper del convent dut a terme a través del mecenatge exercit per fra Tomàs Ripoll (1653-1747). Amb residència gairebé permanent a Roma des de l’any 1702 –primer com a soci del Mestre de l’Orde i a partir de 1725 en la cúspide dels dominics– es va dedicar a beneficiar substanciosament i sense treva la seva comunitat d’origen, i molt especialment la biblioteca. Una acció duta a terme al llarg de pràcticament mig segle, amb la inspiració de les riques col·leccions romanes i el concurs de diversos col·laboradors, i que va suposar l’ingrés d’una gran quantitat de llibres. La col·lecció reunia 15.000 volums, segons una font de la segona meitat del set-cents. Un cabal bibliogràfic les matèries del qual havien de satisfer tant el carisma de l’orde com el públic forà usuari de la biblioteca, que va esdevenir una de les principals de la ciutat. El paper que va complir al servei de la comunitat de Santa Caterina ha estat estudiat a la llum de la tradició i de la normativa de l’Orde dels Predicadors, per a què la biblioteca era una peça essencial. Si la missió principal dels dominics, des dels orígens, era la defensa de la fe catòlica enfront de l’heretgia i la predicació per a la salvació de les ànimes, aquesta només podia ser acomplerta a través de l’estudi i dels llibres. Hem descobert, així, l’afany que es va produir per constituir biblioteques estables a cada un dels cenobis, dotades d’un bibliotecari, i la preocupació per evitar la fuga de llibres. A la vegada, els dictats emanats dels capítols generals respecte a la necessitat d’estudiar, conservar i difondre els escrits necessaris per a la construcció d’una memòria i d’una identitat dominiques també troben un correlat diàfan en la biblioteca. Al seu torn, la qualitat de pública de la biblioteca cateriniana -va obrir oficialmente les seves portes el 1736- és un dels seus aspectes més interessants. Es revela tant en les matèries contingudes com ens els testimonis del seu ús per part d’estudiosos aliens al cenobi : religiosos i seglars, tant autòctons com estrangers. Però res hauria estat possible sense l’acció dels bibliotecaris, que van dur a terme una tasca que es manifesta sobretot en els catàlegs manuscrits que han sobreviscut. L’estudi dels produïts durant l’etapa objectiu del nostre treball ens han permès establir algunes línies fonamentals d’una biblioteconomia cateriniana, en un moment en què, degut principalment a la incessant arribada de llibres comprats per fra Ripoll, la construcció d’un nou espai per a la col·lecció, i l’obertura d’aquesta al públic, ens trobem davant d’un període d’autèntica efervescència catalogràfica. Bona part dels aspectes ja citats, i encara d’altres, han pogut ser determinats gràcies a la identificació i registre dels llibres marcats amb una nota de compra manuscrita reveladora del mecenatge de fra Tomàs Ripoll. La descripció d’aquest grup d’edicions constitueix l’apèndix principal del treball, mentre que la descoberta d’un elevat nombre de llibres procedents de la biblioteca de Pau Ignasi de Dalmases i Ros (1670-1718) –adquirida en part pel convent– ha esdevingut un resultat inesperat i valuós.
The library of the Dominicans of Saint Catherine of Barcelona was one of the most important collections of the city, until July of 1835, when the convent was burnt during a riot. The intervention of Tomàs Ripoll (1653-1747) in favour of the library was essential during the first half of the eighteenth century. Ripoll lived for almost fifty years in Rome, first as an assistant to the Master General and then as Master General himself. From his residence in Santa Maria sopra Minerva and with the help of several collaborators, he patronized Saint Catherine, where he had started his religious life, by giving considerable amounts of money for the reconstruction of the building after the destruction caused by wars, and by buying a huge quantity of books for the library. His principal aim was to restore the prestige and influence of his Catalan community of friars. This PhD thesis gives an overview of the history of Saint Catherine, and concentrates on the role played in the cultural and social life of eighteenth century Barcelona by the Dominicans. It also offers a biography of Tomàs Ripoll and explores the mechanisms and resources dedicated to the promotion of the library, as well as the inspiration he drew from the rich Roman libraries of the time, specially the Casanatense. As far as the collection is concerned, emphasis is given to the vision of the Order of Saint Dominic regarding libraries. One of the main objectives of this research has been to determine a Saint Catherine’s librarianship. A key element in this approach has been an in-depth exam, description and interpretation of the surviving manuscript catalogues, as well as the analysis of a variety of evidences on a group of ca. 2.500 books, representing almost 2.000 editions, which constitutes the so called “Ripoll collection”. The professionalisation of the librarians has also been discussed, and special attention has been paid to the learned public that used the library, as the collection opened its doors officially to the city in 1736. Finally, the acquisition by the Barcelona Dominicans of a part of the important library of Pau Ignasi de Dalmases i Ros (1670-1718) has become an unexpected but most relevant matter.

The focus of this dissertation is the Franciscan church of Santa Caterina (ca.1385-1391) at Galatina in the Salento, an area of Italy characterised by the presence of Greek language and/or rite communities. Scholars have described it as an emblematically 'Latin' church, decorated with 'Giottesque' frescoes, commissioned by a ruthless and ambitious signore, built with the papacy's approval, donated to the Franciscan order and founded with the aim of providing mass in Latin for those who did not speak Greek. This dissertation argues that that view needs to be considerably nuanced, if only because the relationship between the Graeci and the Latini in late-medieval Salento is much more complex than often acknowledged. I place Santa Caterina in its context, exploring how the frescoes themselves are evidence for transculturation and how the experience of both communities must be re-centred in order to fully understand the creation and reception of the fresco programme. Before doing this, however, this PhD focuses on the history of the foundation by restoring agency to two of the three main patrons: Raimondello del Balzo Orsini (d.1406) and his wife Maria d'Enghien (d.1446). I argue that the foundation of Santa Caterina was the first sign of Raimondello's interest in south-eastern Italy, which would allow him to become the first person outside of the royal family to be crowned Prince of Taranto in 1399. I explore the possibility the church may have been built ad instar of St Catherine's on Mt Sinai, and how this may in turn explain some of its unusual architectural features. This dissertation then takes on the second phase of the church's history, during which Maria, now Queen of Naples, commissioned the extensive mural decoration. I date the fresco decoration ca.1415-23/5, discuss in detail their iconography, reconstruct lost scenes, and present - for the first time - a holistic interpretation of the mural programme.

La tesi presenta un projecte poc conegut d'Enric Miralles a partir de l'anàlisi dels documents originals i de la contextualització d'aquest en la renovació dels centres històrics de les ciutats europees i, concretament, de Barcelona. A través del projecte reconeixem trets característics que ens apropen a la importància de l'obra de Miralles. Al projecte, l'arquitecte ofereix una lectura sobre el barri amb la que ens mostra les deficiències que l'urbanisme barceloní presentava en un aquest entorn històric de gran complexitat. Amb la investigació descobrim un Miralles molt complexe i atent a les influències del lloc que, en un exercici minuciós i molt personal, ofereix una alternativa als models habituals de intervenció alhora que ens apropa a una vessant menys impostada de la seva obra. D’una manera semblant, apropar-se al barri de Santa Caterina a través d’aquest projecte permet conèixer i ser conscient de la gran riquesa urbana i arquitectònica d’aquesta part de la ciutat de Barcelona. This thesis dissertation introduces an approach to Enric Miralles' work through one of his most unknown projects. The architect's lecture about Santa Caterina's neighbourhood shows to us the deficit that Barcelona's urban planning had in relation with the complexity of the older part of the city. This project allows us discover a small but very important area of Barcelona and also a new way to work with these parts of the cities. The investigation has been done analysing some Enric Miralles graphic documents extracted from his archive

Ad oggi, l’inchiostro versato per le poco note Storie di santa Caterina di Jacomo, Domenico Tintoretto e bottega risulta essere sorprendentemente cospicuo. Ma come tristemente ormai (quasi) di norma, la seppur ricca bibliografia è, con rarissime eccezioni, sempre uguale a sé stessa, ripetitiva, cantilenante e statica: meramente ed esclusivamente incentrata sulle questioni della qualità esecutiva, dell’attribuzione e della datazione. Volutamente e fortemente distante da questa limitata (e limitante) “tradizione” storico- artistica si pone invece il presente studio, il cui obiettivo è l’andare oltre gli aspetti sovraesposti, pur senza eluderli totalmente, per cercare di recuperare il senso delle nostre immagini. Finalità che si è tentato di conseguire adottando la metodologia storico-artistica dell’iconologia contestuale, ivi associata alla ricerca archivistica. Si è così iniziato a ricostruire il contesto, a riportare alla luce le storie e i nomi delle personalità legate alle nostre opere. Una riscoperta doverosa e imprescindibile, che ha consentito di “vedere” e sciogliere le metafore figurate, di giungere alla riscoperta del senso del ciclo della vergine alessandrina del genio inventore (e aiuti) del tardo Cinquecento veneziano.

Abstract (sommario):

This thesis analyses four European writers, whose common denominator is that they have moved to Sweden from other European countries and chosen to write in Swedish: Caterina Pascual Söderbaum, Theodor Kallifatides, Gabriela Melinescu and Sigrid Combüchen. Focus lies on novels published by the authors in the 21st century. The thesis builds upon theories on memory by Pierre Nora and on imagined communities by Benedict Anderson, Chiara Bottici and Benoît Challand. In Imagined Communities, Anderson shows the effects of the emerging nation states on the modern novel in the 19th century. The hypothesis of this study is that the emergence of the European Union and the resulting European movement will affect narratives in a similar way, but on a European rather than national level. The main finding seems to confirm this, showing that an imagined European community takes shape in the studied novels, surpassing that of the nation state’s borders. All writers focus on memories, but in two different ways: Kallifatides and Melinescu depict long memories, starting in ancient times and with a positive view on remembrance as a focus on what is in common for Europeans. Pascual Söderbaum and Combüchen, on the other hand, depict memories from the dark 20th century and the importance of forgetting and moving on in order to give future generations freedom. In most novels, however, there are examples of lieux de mémoire (sites of memory), with Nora’s terminology, expanding towards a common European identity, in spite of the plethora of myths and languages.
Den här uppsatsen analyserar fyra europeiska författare vars gemensamma nämnare är att de har flyttat till Sverige från andra europeiska länder och valt att skriva på svenska: Caterina Pascual Söderbaum, Theodor Kallifatides, Gabriela Melinescu och Sigrid Combüchen. I fokus är romaner som givits ut av författarna under 2000-talet. Uppsatsen bygger på teorier om minne av Pierre Nora och föreställda gemenskaper av Benedict Anderson, Chiara Bottici och Benoît Challand. I Imagined Communities visar Anderson vilken påverkan de framväxande nationalstaterna hade på den moderna romanen under artonhundratalet. Den här uppsatsens hypotes är att framväxten av EU och den europeiska rörlighet som EU resulterat i påverkar narrativen på ett liknande sätt, men på en europeisk snarare än nationell nivå. De viktigaste resultaten tycks i huvudsak bekräfta denna hypotes, och visar på hur en föreställd europeisk gemenskap tar form i de studerade romanerna, en gemenskap som överskrider nationalstatens gränser. Samtliga författare fokuserar på minnen, men på två vitt skilda sätt: Kallifatides och Melinescu skildrar långa minnen med början i antiken och en positiv syn på hågkomst som det som förenar européer. Pascual Söderbaum och Combüchen, å andra sidan, skildrar minnen av det mörka nittonhundratalet och vikten av att glömma bort och gå vidare för att ge framtida generationer frihet. I de flesta romaner finns det dock exempel på lieux de mémoire (minnesplatser), med Noras terminologi, som vidgar sig mot en gemensam europeisk identitet, trots den stora mångfalden av myter och språk.
