Abstract (sommario):
The shortwave channel reciprocity is important for shortwave channel simulation and shortwave real-time frequency-selection. In order to study the reciprocity of shortwave channel. This paper analyzed experimental results on shortwave reciprocity between Wuhan and Wanning in March 2009, the experimental results obtained by the WIOBSS. The experimental results of the contrary paths shortwave propagation displays that the mean difference value of MUF is small, and the scattering function and Doppler shift are similarsim. Removing the inaccuracy of measurement, we can get that the two propagation paths basically satisfy the reciprocity.

Abstract (sommario):
The reciprocity of the atmospheric turbulence channel in the bidirectional atmospheric laser propagation link is experimentally tested. The bidirectional transceiving coaxial atmospheric laser propagation link is built by using a hot air convection-type atmospheric turbulence emulation device with adjustable turbulence intensity. The influence of different turbulence intensities on the instantaneous-fading correlation of channel is analyzed by the spot characteristics. When there is no atmospheric turbulence in the bidirectional transceiving coaxial atmospheric laser propagation link, the value of channel instantaneous fading correlation coefficient was merely 0.023, which indicates we did not find any reciprocity in the optical channel. With the increment in turbulence intensity, the channel instantaneous fading correlation coefficient presented a constant increasing trend and then tended to be stable around 0.9 in the end. At this moment, the similarity of the instantaneous change trends for these two receiving terminal optical signals, and the consistency of their probability density function, indicates that there is good reciprocity between the bidirectional atmospheric turbulence optical channels. With the increase in the optical signal scintillation factor, we can obtain the result where the correlation coefficient value decreases accordingly.

Abstract (sommario):
This research discusses the infiltration of furrow irrigation invarious forms of irrigation channels in homogeneous soils. The governing equation of the problems is a Richard’s Equation. This equation is transformed using a set of transformation including Kirchhoff and dimensionless variables into Helmholtz modified equations. Furthermore with Dual Reciprocity Boundary Element Method (DRBEM), numerical solution of modified Helmholtz equation obtained. The proposed method is tested on problem involved infiltration from periodic flat channels, non-flat channels without impermeable and non-flat channels with impermeable. The greatest value of suction potential and water content is located below the channel surface. The most water consecutively is a non-flat channel without impermeable, non-flat channel with impermeable and flat channel on Lakish Clay soils.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractA time-division duplex (TDD) two-way channel exploits reciprocity to estimate the forward channel gain from the reverse link. Many previous works explore outage probabilities in the TDD system, based on the reciprocity property. However, a frequency-division duplex (FDD) system has no reciprocity property. In this letter, we investigate the impact of CSI estimation error on the performance of non-orthogonal and orthogonal analog network coding protocols in an FDD two-way system, where channel gains are independent of each other. Considering imperfect CSI, the closed-form expressions of outage probabilities by two protocols are derived in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, respectively. It is shown that the derived outage probabilities match results of Monte Carlo simulations in different communication scenarios. It is interesting that ANC in the FDD two-way channel is proved to outperform that in the TDD channel by the computer simulation.

Abstract (sommario):
A Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) time-varying flat fading channel is considered. The transmitter obtained the channel state information (CSI) relying on the reciprocity principle or by the feedback from the receiver. Thus, channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is outdated due to the delay between the estimation of the channel and the transmission of the data. In order to achieve the maximum channel capacity, the transmitter linearly precoded the signal before transmission based on the outdated CSIT. Under the assumptions of wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering Rayleigh fading channels and Jake’s model, the instantaneous mutual information and ergodic capacity is derived for MIMO channels with outdated CSIT. The information outage probability of MIMO channel with outdated CSIT is also presented.

This project's goal was to develop a simulation model to conduct design analysis and to illustrate the positive and negative aspects of utilizing channel reciprocity versus interleaving. There were three project objectives. The first was to create a numerical model of a laser communications system that included either channel reciprocity or interleaving to mitigate the effects of atmospheric turbulence. This model was implemented in MATLAB* and Simulink*. The second task integrated the model with a graphical user interface (GUI), which provides the user a choice of different configurations and solutions based on the user's design specifications. For example, the user may elect to sweep the scintillation index to see the impact that a variety of turbulence levels have on the bit error rate (BER). The user has the ability to sweep each variable and observe the performance. With this model, the user objectively compares optical communication systems with and without the utilization of channel reciprocity. Scenarios may be run to determine which settings provide the most optimized quality of service (QoS) metrics. The third goal was to test the QoS of both cases against theoretical values in order to check the validity of the MATLAB and Simulink models. These three objectives were met, and channel reciprocity techniques were determined to be an excellent choice for specific conditions. Given the same transmit power, channel reciprocity with and without forward error correction (FEC) achieves a far lower BER than a system that utilizes interleaving and FEC. This low BER is achieved by setting the gating threshold for the transmission of information well above the signal to noise (SNR) requirement. Latency issues could arise, but they are managed in this model by setting the buffer input to output ratio such that the output is always at least twice the input. Although reciprocity without FEC is not a viable solution for all scenarios, it was found that it makes sense to utilize reciprocity without FEC for some cases. However, reciprocity with FEC is recommended for all cases that have round trip durations that are less than the coherence time.

Abstract (sommario):
The spectacular growth of wireless communications systems has led to a sharp increase in data traffic, which should continue to grow over the next few years. The future generation of cellular networks (5G) must be able to support this growth of traffic, while presenting reduced energy consumption compared to existing networks. Among the different studied technologies, time reversal (TR) is a serious candidate to meet these constraints. Indeed, the numerous theoretical studies on the subject have shown that the combination of TR and OFDM has interesting performance, specifically thanks to its temporal compression and spatial focusing properties. However, the assumptions made in the theoretical studies are not always compatible with the practical implementation of a real system. The objective of this thesis is to propose solutions to unrealistic theoritical hypotheses, in order to implement them in a real hardware prototype combining TR and OFDM in a MISO context. First, the implementation of the channel estimation at the transmitter side, and the synchronization of the MISO TR-OFDM system is studied. Then, a calibration solution at the transmitter is proposed to compensate for the non-reciprocal nature of the baseband propagation channel. All these solutions as well as the focusing properties of TR are validated by experimental measurements using the developed prototype. Finally, the implementation of the first TR prototype of spatial modulation at the receiver side is presented

Abstract (sommario):
Since the early 1990s, institutional approaches to organizations have increasingly focused on explaining the role of agency in processes of institutional creation and transformation. The paradox of embedded agency, the question of how actors can become motivated and enabled to transform supposedly taken-for-granted practices, structures and norms has become the fundamental puzzle of contemporary institutional theory. Recent attempts to resolve this puzzle under the label of “institutional work” focus on practices aimed at creating, maintaining, and disrupting institutions, but portray them as planned, discrete episodes that unfold in isolation from everyday organizational or social life. Thereby, the label highlights institutionalists’ current neglect of work in its literal meaning as actors’ everyday occupational tasks and activities. The detachment of institutional work from practical work constitutes a significant blind spot in institutionalists’ understanding of agency and calls for research that examines the reciprocity of institutions and work. Drawing on illuminating constructs from theories of practice, this study extends existing field-level approaches to the paradox of embedded agency. It argues for a practice-based institutionalism that focuses on individual actors and the role of their collective micro-level praxis in constituting macro-level institutions. It re-connects institutional arguments to every-day activity rather than organizational or managerial action, unpacks the micro-practices and micro–politics by which actors negotiate institutional contradictions and demonstrates the reciprocity of institutions and work. The research addresses the detachment of institutional and practical work through a single-case study of a global law firm’s banking group. It explores what banking lawyers do when they ‘do deals’ and how their practical work may attain institutional relevance. Positioned at the intersec-tion of local laws, international financial markets, commercial and professional logics, banking lawyers operate across multiple institutional frameworks. Observations and accounts of their work provide particularly rich insights into the dynamics of institutional persistence and change, because they illustrate empirically how contradictory institutionalized concepts, practices and logics are experienced, negotiated, and constituted at work.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis shows how democratic politics requires a commitment to pluralism as engagement and encounter of the other in their otherness. I contend that it is necessary to commit to such an idea of pluralism because of the problem of incomplete understanding. I establish this premise by drawing on Hans-Georg Gadamer’s account of human finitude. Based on this premise, I argue that the instantiation of Gadamer’s principle of openness leads democratic politics to pluralism as engagement and encounter of the other. Further, I develop accounts of asymmetric reciprocity, reflexivity, and agonism as modes of democratic politics that instantiate the principle of openness. In chapter 1, I establish discourse as a necessary element for democratic politics by drawing from the way Jurgen Habermas uses ‘discourse ethics’ to address the problems of understanding in plural societies. In chapter 2, I demonstrate how incomplete understanding poses a problem for discourse and gives rise to interpretive conflicts by drawing from Gadamer’s account of human finitude. Here I also develop an account of openness as a suitable principle for beings with incomplete understanding based on Gadamer’s idea of hermeneutical experience. In chapters 3-5, I develop accounts of asymmetric reciprocity, reflexivity, and agonism as modes of democratic politics that instantiate the principle of openness. I do so by drawing from Iris Young’s, John Dryzek’s, and Chantal Mouffe’s approaches to the problems that plurality poses to discourse ethics and democratic politics.

Abstract (sommario):
This synthesis article joins the authors of the special issue "Gender perspectives in resilience, vulnerability and adaptation to global environmental change" in a common reflective dialogue about the main contributions of their papers. In sum, here we reflect on links between gender and feminist approaches to research in adaptation and resilience in global environmental change (GEC). The main theoretical contributions of this special issue are threefold: emphasizing the relevance of power relations in feminist political ecology, bringing the livelihood and intersectionality approaches into GEC, and linking resilience theories and critical feminist research. Empirical insights on key debates in GEC studies are also highlighted from the nine cases analysed, from Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Pacific. Further, the special issue also contributes to broaden the gender approach in adaptation to GEC by incorporating research sites in the Global North alongside sites from the Global South. This paper examines and compares the main approaches adopted (e.g. qualitative or mixed methods) and the methodological challenges that derive from intersectional perspectives. Finally, key messages for policy agendas and further research are drawn from the common reflection.

Abstract (sommario):
What would happen if, the systems we deal with everyday, and the situations we find ourselves in, could trigger us to give something to someone else? This work started by exploring the theme of  money systems and social structures and the ambition to find alternatives for our current economic system, which has failed in several ways. People all over the world are already coming up with alternatives that can supplement and stabilize our money-monoculture and that give new meaning to currency. This research investigates a particular alternative economic system called the gift economy, which has great potential to build meaningful relations and re-establish a sense of  community. Since the gift economy has been mainly researched by anthropologists and ethnographers in the last century, my focus is on implementing its principles in society today. Through literature review, case studies and a series of  design projects, this thesis articulates possible ways of  triggering a gift economy. With a special coin, a concept for a bar and by linking the local bakery to Konstfack, we may start to understand what giving really means, how it can benefit us, in what way it can build more meaningful relationships and how it can offer an alternative way of  thinking than what currently drives our economic system

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation is an analysis of the relations between reindeer herding Sami and settled non-Sami in Gällivare parish, Swedish Lapland, 1898-1940. The focus of the dissertation is on the system of skötesrenar, the practice of reindeer belonging to non-Sami being herded by Sami and the subsequent contacts between the two groups. The results presented demonstrate the transformation of the relations between the two groups from mutuai interdependence to mutuai self-sufficiency, and the swiftness with which this change took place. In order to analyse the transformation, reciprocity theory is used. Reciprocity theory concerns the Constitution of relations between different groups, and the basis for such relations. In the early 1900's, the practice of skötesrenar was a well-developed system contributing to the good relations between Sami and non-Sami, as well as to the improvement of the material conditions of those involved. The skötesrenar were important both socially and economically for the persons participating in the system. The huge societal changes that took place during the 20th Century resulted in painful consequences for the relations between the groups. Industrialisation multiplied the number and types of jobs available for the settled non-Sami, while the Sami to a large extent were prevented from partaking of the new opportunities. Industrialisation also caused the decline of the subsistence economy and made the market economy dominant in the locai community. The foundation of the system with skötesrenar had been the mutuai need to meet and exchange goods and services not available within each group; the growth of the market economy altered that. The laws concerning skötesrenar were also changed repeatedly - in 1898, 1917, and 1928 - without regard for the fears by the local community concerning the negative consequences for inter-group relations. Significant changes also took place within Sami society affecting the skötesrenar; the transformation of herding from the intensive to extensive type decreased the participation of women and children in herding, and subsequent erection of permanent residences for Sami families, as well as large annual fluctuations in herd sizes. The present dissertation demonstrates from reciprocity theory that a mutual concern - in this case the skötesrenar - can contribute to the maintenance of a low level of conflict between two ethnically and culturally different parties. Mutual interdependence is a significant factor in upholding a feeling of solidarity. The parties were eager to preserve good mutual relations as conflicts could severely hurt their material conditions. The societal changes taking place meant that by the 1930's the old institutionalised interdependency had ceased to exist. Older people continued the exchanges across group boundaries, but for the rising generation mutuai interaction was replaced by alienation.

Abstract (sommario):
Time Division Duplexing (TDD) Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MaMIMO) with a massive number of base station (BS) antennas relies on channel reciprocity to obtain Channel State Information at Transmitter (CSIT). However the overall end to end digital channel is not reciprocal due to the presence of Transmit (Tx) and Receive (Rx) chains which need to be corrected using calibration factors. Our work provides a simple and elegant expression of the Cramer Rao Bound (CRB) for calibration parameter estimation. We provide analysis for the existing least squares approaches and propose optimal algorithms to estimate the calibration parameters. We also consider beamforming for a rapidly time-varying point to point MIMO link. In an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) sytem, this results in inter-carrier interference (ICI). With an assumption of linear channel variation across the OFDM symbol, it is observed that the beamformer design problem is similar to that of a MIMO Interfering Broadcast Channel (IBC) beamforming design. The beamformer design takes into account receive windowing using the excess cyclic prefix and the window is jointly designed with the Tx beamformer. In addition to full CSIT, we also investigate partial CSIT approaches that maximize Expected Weighted Sum Rate (EWSR) where the Tx has only partial knowledge of the channel. First, we use a large system approximation that also works well for a small number of Tx and Rx antennas to derive the beamformers. In our work, we also analyze the possibility of using the Expected-signal- expected-interference-WSR metric instead of the EWSR. Finally, experimental results on the Eurecom MaMIMO testbed are presented

Abstract (sommario):
Over the past fifty years, (financial) capitalism has brought about an enormous growth in wealth. Millions around the world have been lifted out of poverty. However, the downsides of the present global economic constitution are rapidly becoming evident as well. Rising inequality, soaring debt levels, and repeated cycles of boom and bust have proven to be some of its key characteristics. After the 2008 crisis brought the financial system to the brink of collapse, new regulations, stricter supervision, higher capital requirements, and ethical codes were introduced to the sector. Today we find ourselves in the middle of another economic boom. Yet one pressing question remains: has anything changed? Have the (necessary) repairs fixed the flaws in the system? Or do we require even more fundamental reforms? This volume builds on the observation that society has co-evolved with the financial sector. We cannot simply claim that 'finance' was the sole instigator of the 2008 crisis. Society itself has become financialized; the process of replacing relations, structures of trust and reciprocity, by anonymous and systemic transactions. The volume poses vital questions with regard to this societal development. How did this happen? And more importantly: is change possible? If yes, how? This volume contains 21 essays on the themes mentioned above. Authors include Jan Peter Balkenende, Wouter Bos, Lans Bovenberg, Govert Buijs, and Herman Van Rompuy. A recommendation by Dutch Minister of Finance Wopke Hoekstra is also included.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter examines captivity in the first two wars against Russia fought by the new Ottoman Regular army, in 1828–29 and 1853–56 (the Crimean War). We will see that the Ottoman prisoner-of-war system changed in response to the new incentives and interests created by the forces, as the Porte took conscious efforts to improve prisoners’ treatment in several ways. The result was that during the Crimean War, when the Ottoman alliance with France and Britain brought these three states’ captivity systems into contact with each other, all appeared roughly comparable in their basic structure. Both changes and continuities in this era drew on the Law of Release and the prisoner-of-war system established over the preceding century. Thus, while there were important changes, and convergences with European practices, Ottoman state interests and Russo-Ottoman legal traditions still remained paramount in governing captivity (with one major exception, to be discussed in Chapter 10).

This chapter discusses how perspectivism is the device through which each one of us, who first and foremost sees the world from his point of view, is able to recognize that precisely as just one point of view, and thereby to change it. A healthy mental condition implies the ability to change one’s point of view and temporarily take the perspective of another person. The stronger the reciprocity of perspectives between my former and my present ego, and between my own vantage and the Other’s, the weaker the tendency to perceive my motivations as absolutely necessary. Perspectivism allows me to see myself as not strictly determined by the past and by the involuntary, and may restore a sense of agency. This explains why the reciprocity of perspectives is a therapeutic goal and perspectivism—the attempt to see things from the point of view of the Other—is a therapeutic device.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter reviews the literature on compliance, a type of social influence that occurs when a person changes their behavior in response to a direct request. Specifically, I review research on compliance organized by the six classic principles of social influence (Cialdini, 2009)—reciprocity, commitment and consistency, authority, social validation or social proof, and liking and similarity, and examine how they are used to change peoples’ behaviors. Furthermore, this chapter reviews the mechanisms that underlie these principles, particularly mindlessness. Finally, this chapter concludes by examining whether this framework for understanding compliance applies to the new realm of social influence—social media—and calls for more research on the effectiveness of the principles of influence when the mode of interpersonal interaction is software based rather than in person.

Thompson, William R. Constructing a General Model Accounting for Interstate Rivalry Termination. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acrefore/9780190228637.013.291.

Abstract (sommario):
Unlike many topics in international relations, a large number of models characterize interstate rivalry termination processes. But many of these models tend to focus on different parts of the rivalry termination puzzle. It is possible, however, to create a general model built around a core of shocks, expectation changes, reciprocity, and reinforcement. Twenty additional elements can be linked as alternative forms of catalysts/shocks and perceptual shifts or as facilitators of the core processes. All 24 constituent elements can be encompassed by the general model, which allows for a fair amount of flexibility in delineating alternative pathways to rivalry de-escalation and termination at different times and in different places. The utility of the unified model is then applied in an illustrative fashion to the Anglo-American rivalry, which ended early in the 20th century.

Abstract (sommario):
The Crimean War was a watershed event in Russia; it transformed government and society and ushered in the Great Reforms. Russian subjects mobilized to support the home front came out of the war with an expectation of reciprocity; serfs wanted their freedom, while other social estates saw the potential of civil society. In Crimea and the larger province of Tauride, the war created profoundly negative change. Violence disassembled landscapes and altered topography. It remapped roads, and communication networks. War destroyed industry and agriculture. Most significantly, punitive civilian policies combined with the failure of recovery programs led the mass migration of Nogai and Crimean Tatars. The Russian government resettled Christian populations in the spaces vacated by emigrating Tatars and remade the distant borderland into its own image. Crimea never recovered from the Crimean War. Rather, mass scale violence transformed Crimea.

Abstract (sommario):
This survey of economic history emphasizes American Indians’ varied and varying responses to profit-oriented economic practices introduced by non-Indians. It depicts aboriginal Indian economies as diverse and dynamic though modeled on kin relations and reciprocity. European colonial settlements and Euro-Americans’ ultimate hegemony, fueled by commercial market relations and capitalist development, eventually undermined every indigenous population’s self-sufficiency. Most Indians consequently fell into poverty, but not for lack of strategic and sometimes rewarding engagement with the new market economy. Indians’ many adaptive strategies have included participation in commercial trade, wage labor, and manufacturing, often in order to supplement traditional subsistence practices and further Indian ideals. The chapter stresses that United States policies and law first facilitated the massive transfer of Indian land and resources to non-Indians, but that more recent policy changes and court rulings have enabled some Indians to recoup wealth by operating tribe-owned enterprises.

Abstract (sommario):
Traditional society is modernity’s “other”—that against which we moderns identify ourselves as modern. We believe that we live in a world of extraordinary dynamism unlike any other, while other societies honor their traditions and change very little. If modernity gets its start in the Renaissance, as Foucault held In The Order of Things, then, by his account, the Renaissance was still a traditional society and remained so. In such societies, similarities among things-as-they-seem are always significant; similitudes make their appearance in and as normatively potent signs. Just as children learn cause and become agents by launching objects, people routinely give valued things away without expectation of return; reciprocity is secondary in social relations, even if it appears to define modern life. Instead the asymmetries of giving and receiving result in social distance, which rules of hospitality and appropriate conduct codify behind the screen of innumerably many exchanges.

Abstract (sommario):
Processes associated with the formation of child-headed households (CHH) are complex. Findings are mixed with regard to the impact of living in CHHs on children. On the one hand, children in CHHs do not necessarily have more unmet basic needs than do peers in adult-headed households and, in fact, have more opportunities to develop self-esteem and care for others. Nonetheless, children in CHHs confront specific challenges to their well-being. This chapter summarizes the state of the literature pertaining to CHHs, with a particular focus on CHHs as indicators of “the breakdown of the extended family” as a safety net. The authors present two case studies from Namibia that illustrate changes in children’s relationships and other aspects of the CHH experience and explore immediate and deferred reciprocity as a measure of accessibility and strength of their relationships and as an indicator of the changing status of children and family dynamics.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIn my chapter I analyze, first, the social elements explaining the hospitable, and not hostile, attitude Lampedusa inhabitants have shown over the years toward migrant people. I argue hospitality cannot be understood as a cultural element or an intrinsic characteristic of the Mediterranean identity. This attitude is mostly linked to historical dynamics and structural factors that characterize this Italian borderland. As the concept of reciprocity suggests, the fact that Lampedusa has historically been a place of emigration to Sicily and other Italian or Northern Africa regions led to a sort of identification with migrant people. At the same time, foreign migrants have always been temporary guests on this island. This situation facilitated, I suggest, the perception of migrants as non-dangerous visitors, unable to change the social landscape. Secondly, I explore the negative effects the transition in the perception of migrants from guests to take care to people the Italian state is entitled to manage has produced on the island. The replacement of a local model of hospitality based on informal practices and spontaneous places with an institutional model characterized by bureaucratic procedures and militarized sites led to a forced separation between local and migrant people.

Abstract (sommario):
Transmit beamforming improves the performance of multiple-input multiple-output antenna system (MIMO) by exploiting channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. Numerous MIMO beamforming schemes are proposed in open literature and standard bodies such as 3GPP, IEEE 802.11n and 802.16d/e. This chapter describes the underlying principle, evolving techniques, and corresponding industrial applications of MIMO beamforming. The main limiting factor is the cumbersome overhead to acquire CSI at the transmitter. The solutions are categorized into FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) and TDD (Time Division Duplex) approaches. For all FDD channels and radio calibration absent TDD channels, channel reciprocity is not available and explicit feedback is required. Codebook-based feedback techniques with various quantization complexities and feedback overheads are depicted in this chapter. Furthermore, we discuss transmit/receive (Tx/Rx) radio chain calibration and channel sounding techniques for TDD channels, and show how to achieve channel reciprocity by overcoming the Tx/Rx asymmetry of the RF components

Abstract (sommario):
This Conclusion reiterates the central argument of the book and ties each chapter to that argument: Paul’s practices of divination and wonderworking are easily and naturally contextualized within his ancient Mediterranean milieu. This milieu includes widespread practical understandings of the gods’ interest in human affairs, the human ability to discern divine messages, the human ability to channel divine power, and reciprocity as a central feature of the human–divine dynamic. The chapter observes that the mode of religiosity favored by most New Testament scholars has generated a kind of blind spot toward the evidence that contextualizes Paul in this milieu. That is, the mode of the literate cultural producer looks askance at practical, mundane attitudes toward reciprocity and divination. Thus, Paul’s emphasis on reciprocity and his consistent participation in forms of divination and wonderworking have largely gone ignored.

Abstract (sommario):
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  HUMANITY The Panel recommends recognition that research in this field should be geared towards the development of critical understandings of self and society in the modern world. Archaeological research into the modern past should be ambitious in seeking to contribute to understanding of the major social, economic and environmental developments through which the modern world came into being. Modern-world archaeology can add significantly to knowledge of Scotland’s historical relationships with the rest of the British Isles, Europe and the wider world. Archaeology offers a new perspective on what it has meant to be a modern person and a member of modern society, inhabiting a modern world.  MATERIALITY The Panel recommends approaches to research which focus on the materiality of the recent past (i.e. the character of relationships between people and their material world). Archaeology’s contribution to understandings of the modern world lies in its ability to situate, humanise and contextualise broader historical developments. Archaeological research can provide new insights into the modern past by investigating historical trends not as abstract phenomena but as changes to real lives, affecting different localities in different ways. Archaeology can take a long-term perspective on major modern developments, researching their ‘prehistory’ (which often extends back into the Middle Ages) and their material legacy in the present. Archaeology can humanise and contextualise long-term processes and global connections by working outwards from individual life stories, developing biographies of individual artefacts and buildings and evidencing the reciprocity of people, things, places and landscapes. The modern person and modern social relationships were formed in and through material environments and, to understand modern humanity, it is crucial that we understand humanity’s material relationships in the modern world.  PERSPECTIVE The Panel recommends the development, realisation and promotion of work which takes a critical perspective on the present from a deeper understanding of the recent past. Research into the modern past provides a critical perspective on the present, uncovering the origins of our current ways of life and of relating to each other and to the world around us. It is important that this relevance is acknowledged, understood, developed and mobilised to connect past, present and future. The material approach of archaeology can enhance understanding, challenge assumptions and develop new and alternative histories. Modern Scotland: Archaeology, the Modern past and the Modern present vi Archaeology can evidence varied experience of social, environmental and economic change in the past. It can consider questions of local distinctiveness and global homogeneity in complex and nuanced ways. It can reveal the hidden histories of those whose ways of life diverged from the historical mainstream. Archaeology can challenge simplistic, essentialist understandings of the recent Scottish past, providing insights into the historical character and interaction of Scottish, British and other identities and ideologies.  COLLABORATION The Panel recommends the development of integrated and collaborative research practices. Perhaps above all other periods of the past, the modern past is a field of enquiry where there is great potential benefit in collaboration between different specialist sectors within archaeology, between different disciplines, between Scottish-based researchers and researchers elsewhere in the world and between professionals and the public. The Panel advocates the development of new ways of working involving integrated and collaborative investigation of the modern past. Extending beyond previous modes of inter-disciplinary practice, these new approaches should involve active engagement between different interests developing collaborative responses to common questions and problems.  REFLECTION The Panel recommends that a reflexive approach is taken to the archaeology of the modern past, requiring research into the nature of academic, professional and public engagements with the modern past and the development of new reflexive modes of practice. Archaeology investigates the past but it does so from its position in the present. Research should develop a greater understanding of modern-period archaeology as a scholarly pursuit and social practice in the present. Research should provide insights into the ways in which the modern past is presented and represented in particular contexts. Work is required to better evidence popular understandings of and engagements with the modern past and to understand the politics of the recent past, particularly its material aspect. Research should seek to advance knowledge and understanding of the moral and ethical viewpoints held by professionals and members of the public in relation to the archaeology of the recent past. There is a need to critically review public engagement practices in modern-world archaeology and develop new modes of public-professional collaboration and to generate practices through which archaeology can make positive interventions in the world. And there is a need to embed processes of ethical reflection and beneficial action into archaeological practice relating to the modern past.
