Abstract (sommario):
This essay explores the utility of the formalist concept of motivation as a way to interrogate the textual and cultural operation of a TV character, Harley Watt from HBO’s Treme (2010–2013). Peeling the layers of character construction reveals how signs convey meaning and confine interpretation. This analytic process highlights how performers and character connect, in this instance, with how the casting of singer-songwriter Steve Earle as a musician with a social conscience imports knowledge of him, his music and history. Ultimately, this essay contributes to the body of research that explores

This chapter explores how the gendered character of the refrigerator mother offered an interpretive lens through which experts viewed autism when it was first identified as a unique disorder. Character sketches of these early “autism mothers” emerged from a set of topoi—culturally available ideas and images—about mothers in the 1960s and were found lacking compared to the standard of a warm, devoted, and loving mother. The chapter shows that typified gendered characters can be interpreted as explanations for autism, thereby functioning as heuristics for scientific theorizing. It then considers

Abstract SDF3 is a syntax definition formalism that extends plain context-free grammars with features such as constructor declarations, declarative disambiguation rules, character-level grammars, permissive syntax, layout constraints, formatting templates, placeholder syntax, and modular composition. These features support the multi-purpose interpretation of syntax definitions, including derivation of type schemas for abstract syntax tree representations, scannerless generalized parsing of the full class of context-free grammars, error recovery, layout-sensitive parsing, parenthesization and formatting, and syntactic completion. This paper gives a high level overview of SDF3 by means of examples and provides a guide to the literature for further details.

Grounded in positive psychology, this chapter focuses on constructs that increase well-being and may result in a flourishing emotional state. Within the PERMA framework, flourishing is reflected in positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. Specifically, this chapter takes an in-depth look into the constructs of positive emotions, character, and purpose. Information on measurement tools, correlates, and possible interventions for each of the three constructs is provided. An emphasis is also placed on promising positive psychology interventions, many of which utilize strategies involving character strengths as defined in accordance with the Values in Action (VIA) Classification of Character Strengths and Virtues. The chapter concludes with information on how a reader can implement various positive psychology activities, as well as different school based-programs that incorporate purpose and positive psychology interventions.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
We start with the basic stuff used to build EXPRESS: the characters you use to build ‘words’ and the different kinds of words that may appear in the source. Computer languages call these words tokens. You compose characters according to syntax rules to form different kinds of tokens. In turn, tokens are composed into statements and statements are composed into blocks (we will get to statements and blocks directly). The syntax alone does not define the language however — we also need to be concerned with semantics. Semantics deals with the meaning of well formed syntax. As an example, EXPRESS has tokens for identifiers and reserved words. Although they both look like ‘words’ they are different; an identifier cannot be the same as a keyword. EXPRESS expects to see identifiers and reserved words in specific places within statements. It is an error to put an identifier where a reserved word is expected and vice versa. EXPRESS is correctly written only when both the syntactic and semantical rules are observed. EXPRESS source is composed as a stream of characters. The source stream is decoded into tokens, statements and blocks according to the syntax rules. The source is typically broken into a number of physical lines, which is any number (including zero) of characters ended by a ‘newline.’ The source will be more attractive and easier to read when statements are broken into lines and whitespace is used to set off different constructs. The following declarations are the same to an EXPRESS parser, but give different impressions to human readers. The EXPRESS character set is easy to explain —just look at your computer keyboard. Most of the characters you see there are used to write EXPRESS. However, there is a more complicated explanation which follows: the EXPRESS character set is denned as cells 00-7F of plane 00 of group 00 of ISO 10646. Of those characters, cells 20-7E as shown in Table 9.1 are actually used to write EXPRESS. Any other character (cells 00-1F, 7F) is called a ‘rogue’ character, and if used is treated as a space unless it appears within a string literal or a remark.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter features a description of three contradictions (i.e., disconnects) in the activity system of international higher education students in online learning. These disconnects are interpreted in relation to the constructs of teaching presence, real presence, and social and cultural presence and analyzed in terms of their origins in face-to-face, time- and place-dependent contexts of learning. Teaching presence is the external (to the student) regulation and management of learning, real presence is the sensory-rich character of learning, and social and cultural presence relate to specific types of interactions and communication that occur in conjunction with learning. Learning presence reflects a constructivist perspective that values socially-constructed forms of knowledge and self-regulation. The chapter follows with a description of how the disconnects can be bridged and the activity system expanded.

Abstract (sommario):
The technological aspect of human relations, in the context of youth and adult partnerships, has not yet been addressed. For this reason, using the Youth-Adult Partnership (Y-AP) framework, this book chapter examines the role of mobile phone communications in the development of six constructs — authentic decision-making, natural mentors, reciprocal activity, character, compassion, and community connectivity. In this chapter, the Y-AP constructs, in tandem with the mobile phone, act as a series of human-technology interactions that can be used by youth workers to understand the dynamics of the relationship between youth and adults. The main role of this chapter is also to provide a structure that can provide guidance and understanding of the role of Malaysian youth workers when dealing with technology as a forum for collaboration between youth and adults.

Abstract (sommario):
This is the first of two chapters that examine ways Stein’s increasingly experimental writings during the first three decades of the twentieth century gradually work through dominant early twentieth-century genders, loosening up and ultimately rejecting the rigid constructs of masculinity she encountered in Otto Weininger’s misogynist Sex and Character. Chapter Two focuses on cross-gendered identification in Stein’s earliest literary efforts—the prose narratives Fernhurst (1904-5), Q.E.D. (1903), and Three Lives (1909). In these works, Stein rejects the category “woman” while questioning the limitations of patriarchal ideologies about masculinity and femininity alike.

Abstract (sommario):
Chapter four, “Unwilling Feeling,” reads John D. Caputo’s material theology and his conception of the insistence of God alongside Sara Ahmed’s work on what she names “affect aliens” and willfulness to offer biblical scenes of affect alien prophets. Jonah and Martha embody such moody prophecy in this scene. The chapter constructs and applies an affect hermeneutic to and with biblical texts in order to read for what might happen when we follow moodiness to unexpected theological conclusions. Jonah’s and Martha’s moodiness in their biblical tales reveal not what’s wrong with them, but rather serve as a lament against problematic theological interpretations and conscriptions of each character. These affect alien prophets exist as blockage; their existence stops up or slows down the normative flow. These biblical characters prophetically persist by remaining moody impediments to the story. To gravely attend to such prophets is to embrace alternate flows or undercurrents within the biblical story. Such an embrace invites us to look for alternate flows within our contemporary stories.

Abstract (sommario):
Present biologic models envision organisms behave like the character ‘Topsy’ in Gone with the Wind; they “just grew.” Modeled of Lego©-like components, the individual structures are linked together as if they are automobile parts that are manufactured at different plants and assembled at some central factory. For the most part, hexahedral finite element meshes are used to model structures. When tetrahedral modeling is used, no account is made of the different mechanical properties that are inherent in triangulated structures, (trusses), that make the structures behave very differently than hex

Abstract (sommario):
In a Collaborative Product Commerce (CPC) environment, it is necessary that the participants in a product life cycle should share semantics of terms although they may be represented differently. In order to manage this sharing of semantics, it is necessary to recognize automatically that two terms represented differently can have equivalent semantics. To this end, a semantic mapping logic that utilizes ontology and a Bayesian Network is proposed. The proposed approach consists of three phases: character matching, definition comparisons and similarity checking. First, character matching maps tw

Abstract (sommario):
Free-form surfaces are useful for modeling the external shape of industrial products but designers are still facing difficulty in designing high-quality aesthetic surfaces because commercial CAD systems currently available lack the required performance to support their design work. This has therefore led to the increasing need for design-aiding modeling systems to enhance the efficiency of high quality surface design processes. This paper proposes a method of redesigning aesthetic surface shapes by controlling unit normal vectors on the surface and discusses a fundamental system constructed ba

Abstract (sommario):
The Boundary Element Method is one of the most used techniques for the simulation of acoustic problems especially for external ones. However, it leads to large computational time because of the complex character of the resulting linear system and the calculation of its different terms by surface integration. In this paper, the Rayleigh method is used to calculate the acoustical pressure at any point in the space. This method is very fast since it does not need to construct and to solve a linear system.

Abstract (sommario):
The additional ship resistance due to water oscillations in an open moonpool as constructed in drillships can be obtained through model tests. The oscillation has a dominant frequency and character, and the amplitude increases with forward speed. The resonant oscillation mode can be piston or sloshing. Recent measurements show that both types of oscillation can increase ship resistance to the same magnitude. The sloshing mode dominates in longer moonpools, while piston mode oscillations are dominant in shorter moonpools. Based on two model tests series carried out at Delft University of Techno
