This essay is about the significance of Mary Lamb’s portrayal of a child reading from a gravestone in the short story ‘Elizabeth Villiers; or The Sailor Uncle’ from Mrs. Leicester’s School (1809). Maybe the most famous tomb-reading scene in literature is that of Pip divining the personalities of his immediate family from their gravestone at the opening of Great Expectations (1860–1). However, a similar scene had been used previously by Mary Shelley in Falkner (1837) and earlier still by Lamb in ‘Elizabeth Villiers; or The Sailor Uncle’. My argument is that Lamb’s text continued to have a hidden, posthumous existence as Shelley and Charles Dickens went on to translate that image of a child reading from their parent’s gravestone. Each author also records and transmits a practice used by poor children to gain an education. Furthermore, the grave acts as a childhood home where dead parents continue to educate their children.

Sailan-ur-reham(Leucorrhoea) is a common gynaecological disorder. Almost 20% of the patients attending gynaecological clinics complain of vaginal discharge indicating some form of infection. In 90% of cases the inflammation is usually relatively mild and the remaining 10% are more serious. Married women are at greater risk to suffer from leucorrhoea as these women are exposed to sexual activity and frequent child bearing which may lead to vaginal infections like –cervicitis, cervical erosion and pelvic inflammatory disease causing leucorrhoea. In literature of Unani Medicine discharge from uterus, cervix and vagina other than blood are described under the heading of sailan-ur-reham. Hence sailan-ur-reham may be compared to leucorrhoea in modern system of medicine. In Unani system of medicine, the basic causes of disease are related with the concept of Akhlat (humour) as described by Buqrat, (Hippocrates 360-470 B.C.). According to the theory of akhlat veginal discharge can be Damvi (Sanguine), Balghami (Phlagmatic), Saudawi (Malencholic) and Safrawi(choleric) depending upon the dominance of akhlat.

Angelo Petraglia, born in 1876 in the Salerno Province of Italy, the first child of Nicola and Carmela Petraglia, spent his first five years in Piaggine, a small mountain village, and in 1881 sailed to New York City with his mother, his uncle, and a younger sister. His father had preceded them to America to find work and a place to live. The family name was changed to Patri, perhaps by immigration authorities. The sister died shortly after their arrival in America, but three other sisters were born soon after.

Chile has sailed in troubled waters in recent months. The effects of the social crisis at the end of 2019 were not yet fully evident, when the Covid-19 pandemic forced the government to take drastic measures to try to slow down the advance of the virus. The restrictions imposed on displacement, dynamic quarantines and the suspension of non-essential activities had a strong impact on the employment and economic conditions of the inhabitants of Chile, and more dramatically on the migrant population. This article aims to make visible the vulnerability and precariousness of the migrant population in Chile in this context of a pandemic, as well as the need to generate situated and inclusive social policies.

The first short story in the volume Mondo and Other Stories serves as a model for the other stories in the collection in terms of the themes, the representation of the child’s portrait and the stylistic peculiarities of the text. More exactly, the story describes the world of “children seen as kings” (Brée, 1990: 100) where everything is dominated by goodness, purity, beauty and magic. As the reference to Sinbad the Sailor at the beginning of the book suggests, the story depicts a moving journey in pursuit of a dream. This is the journey of a child who, refusing the adult world from which he feels alienated, is in search of himself and the unknown. As an image of the viator child, can we consider Mondo a new type of vagabond? Why is he emblematic of the author’s fictional universe and of universal literature? By answering these questions, the purpose of the paper is to demonstrate the originality and uniqueness of Le Clézio’s writing.

In the North-Eastern Mediterranen coast of Morocco, the establishment of seaside resorts built as part of the Plan Azur, substantially degraded the coastal matorral of Juniperus phoenicea L. Nonetheless, the species remains an important resource for the ecological balance. The estimation of the changes in land cover is a suitable method to evaluate the degradation rate of the matorral. The aim of the current study is to warn about the degradation of J. phoenicea in Saidia coastline by quantifying the inter-years dynamic of J. phoenicea matorral in 1965 (before the Plan Azur) in 2004 and 2021(after the Plan Azur). Estimation of changes in matorral cover rate was achieved by photo-interpretation. Analysis indicates that J. phoenicea matorral ecosystem of Saidia has been affected by a drop of 63% in land area, over a period of time not exceeding 17 years. Currently the picture of the coastal matorral of J. phoenicea is rather bleak; the vulnerability of this valuable resource has prompted us to raise the alarm in order to preserve remaining up shrubs to the present time.

David Phillips was born on 7 March 1924 in Ellesmere, Shropshire, a small country town with a population then of 2000, on the border between England and Wales. His father, Charles Harry Phillips, was a Master Tailor and a Wesleyan Methodist local preacher. His mother, Edith Harriet Phillips (née Finney), was a London-trained midwife, the organist at Ellesmere Methodist Church and a member of the Ellesmere Urban District Council. She was the daughter of Samuel Finney, who was one-time secretary of the Midland Miners' Federation, a Member of Parliament 1916-22, and also a Primitive Methodist local preacher. David's unusual middle name is the maiden surname of his mother's great-grandmother and it was a reminder that the family was supposed to be related to the Pilgrim Father James Chilton, who sailed on the Mayflower. David was known as Chilton Phillips in Ellesmere. There was one sister who was four years older than David. She left home at fourteen to train as a child nurse, later became a telephonist and married. Tragically, she died in 1942 from diabetes.

Abstract. In the OOMPH (Ocean Organics Modifying Particles in both Hemispheres) project a ship measurement cruise took place in the late austral summer from 1 to 23 March 2007. The French R/V Marion Dufresne sailed from Punta Arenas, Chile (70.85° W, 53.12° S) to La Reunion island (55.36° E, 21.06° S) across the southern Atlantic Ocean. In-situ measurements of hydrogen peroxide, methylhydroperoxide and ozone were performed and are compared to simulations with the atmospheric chemistry global circulation model EMAC. The model generally reproduces the measured trace gas levels, but underestimates hydrogen peroxide mixing ratios at high wind speeds, indicating too strong dry deposition to the ocean surface. An interesting feature during the cruise is a strong increase of hydrogen peroxide, methylhydroperoxide and ozone shortly after midnight off the west coast of Africa due to an increase in the boundary layer height, leading to downward transport from the free troposphere, which is realistically reproduced by the model.

‘We seafarers … who share the seas’ is the expression of a collective identity and mutual responsibility. This article examines that collective identity among members of the Seamen’s Union of Australia and asks, what did internationalism mean in practice to seafarers themselves? Employing an oral history method, coupled with a reading of the union’s own printed media, it explores the seafarers’ understanding of internationalism that they claimed was ‘the language of seafarers’. It was grounded in the nature and reality of their work, and became their politics. The article takes as a case study the campaigns to restore democracy in Greece and Chile after military coups in 1967 and 1973 respectively, and the longer campaign against apartheid in South Africa, which began earlier, before 1960, and ended later, in 1990. These campaigns were conducted alongside many other trade unions, both in Australia and overseas, but maritime workers brought a unique inflection to activism as their internationalism expressed their connectedness across the oceans on which they sailed.

Allergic disease has risen to epidemic proportions during recent years. Evidence shows that prenatal events play a critical role in determining disease susceptibility via environmental influences on placental function and fetal programming. We hypothesised that childhood susceptibility to allergy is increased through significant alterations in placental gene expression involved in regulating immune system development. Furthermore, we hypothesised that products of altered placental genes are indirect measures of altered protein concentrations in the saliva of children with allergies. The aim of this PhD thesis was to identify proteins associated with childhood allergy using two sources of biological tissue: placental tissue and child saliva. The long term objectives were to identify proteins that could be measures of allergic risk in placenta and saliva, develop an assay for detection of allergic risk in newborns and target proteins for interventions that prevent allergy onset. Placental tissue and child saliva samples were examined using a proteomic approach involving quantitative label-free comparative mass spectrometry. Data analysis were performed using Mascot database and MaxLFQ software. Placental tissue and saliva from children with no allergy were compared with children with allergic diseases (placenta, n= 16; saliva, n= 18). Using placental samples, 1223 proteins were identified from MaxLFQ analysis. Nineteen proteins were significantly altered in allergic male placentae and 21 proteins were altered in allergic female placentae, relative to non-allergic children. Of these proteins, five candidate placental proteins associated with allergic diseases were validated with Western blot (n=68), which include chloride intracellular channel protein 3, peroxiredoxin-2, haptoglobin and complement C3. Moreover, 14-3-3 protein had very high expression in allergic children and very low expression in the non-allergic group. Using child saliva samples, 177 proteins were identified from MaxLFQ analysis. Of these proteins, six candidate proteins with significant ratio in specific allergic phenotypes were validated with Western blot (n=62). These proteins include salivary 14-3-3, cornulin, involucrin, transferrin, haptoglobin and desmoglein 1. Based on Western blot findings, 14-3-3, cornulin and involucrin proteins were further validated using the Blitz system that uses crude saliva sample for rapid identification and quantitation as a potential non-invasive bedside allergy biomarker screening (n=126). Blitz results demonstrated that these proteins were significantly altered in allergic children with asthmatic mother (high risk of allergy), as compared to non-allergic children with asthmatic mother. Only salivary cornulin was significantly altered in allergic children as compared to non-allergic children regardless of maternal asthma status. Findings revealed that in both placental and saliva samples, 14-3-3 proteins were significantly altered in female allergic children as compared with female non-allergic children. Interestingly, altered expression of some proteins varies in a sex-specific manner, such as observed in haptoglobin and involucrin, and in relation to presence or absence of maternal asthma. In conclusion, our findings indicate that protein expression can be altered in-utero in children who subsequently develop an allergy and altered expression of these proteins is detectable in saliva in early life.Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Adelaide, Adelaide Medical School, 2018

This chapter details the early life of Anna Howard Shaw. Anna was born on St. Valentine's Day in 1847 to Thomas and Nicolas Shaw, in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in northeast England, the sixth child and the third daughter of a bankrupt Scottish family. While all members of such struggling families in the mid-nineteenth century faced bleak and limited futures, girl-children, if they survived, had even fewer opportunities. In 1849, her father Thomas sailed for the United States, and in August 1851 Nicolas and her six children boarded the Jacob A. Westervelt in Liverpool for what was to be a seven-week passage to New York. The family made their first American home in the old whaling town of New Bedford, Massachusetts. They then moved to a new mill town, Lawrence, in the North on the Merrimac River, which would be their home for the next seven years, during the nation-changing decade of the 1850s. When the Civil War started in April 1861, Anna's two brothers and father volunteered. At only sixteen, Anna shouldered the responsibility for her family's survival.

The study investigates the extent and characteristics of the phenomenon of Child Language Brokering (CLB) in the Italian school system, namely the linguistic mediation of foreign students for their relatives and the institutions of the host country. A questionnaire administrated to 347 students of 36 nationalities of two secondary high schools of Perugia, detected the characteristics of CLB, foreign students’ attitude towards their language and culture of origin and those of the host country, and their relationship with the mediation practices. After an introduction and an overview of the literature on CLB, paragraphs 3 and 4 describe the materials and methods used and the results obtained. Finally, conclusions concern the enhancement of CLB in an inclusive perspective.

This chapter focuses on the poem, “Casabianca,” by Felicia Hemans, which presents the spectacle of a child sailor who is blown to pieces because his sense of duty keeps him standing on deck during the bombardment of his ship. This poem is used as a lens to examine the processes whereby the performance of poetry in Britain's elementary schools forged short-term and long-term bodily relationships between individuals and measured language. Looking, among other things, at the history of corporal punishment within mass education, the chapter considers not only what happened to children, but also to poems with regular rhythms, during the process of enforced recitation. The fragmented survival of “Casabianca” in popular consciousness today, this chapter argues, is the last remaining trace of its pedagogical past, of a time when poetry was experienced in and through the body.

After avoiding attacks from corsairs, they arrive safely in the port of Candia, only to find half-finished city walls and many buildings partially in ruin from a recent earthquake. They soon obtain rental housing and insert themselves into a community of Latins and Greeks. Giulia gives birth to their first child, Lodovico, who dies two weeks later. A healthy second son, Sigismondo, is born, albeit with difficulties. With the Della Torre line now assured, the couple move within a complicated social hierarchy of elites and settle into the rhythms of colonial life. Girolamo collects rents for a Farnese cardinal and is granted permission to carry arms for his defence. The search for his brother’s assassins continues back in Italy, and Bishop Michele becomes a leading figure at the Council of Trent.

My story begins in the early nineteenth century when Romantic Grand Tourists began to make Greece part of their itinerary, and began looting in the name of the nascent discipline of archaeology. There was a brief window—between 1803 when Napoleon closed the Italian peninsula to enemy tourists, and 1821 when the War for Independence against the Ottomans broke out—when Greece became an important travel destination. Byron’s epic, Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage (1812) set the Romantic taste for Greek travel and his caustic poem, “The Curse of Minerva” (1811), roundly condemned the activities of Lord Elgin’s men on the Athenian Acropolis. When Byron departed from Athens at the end of his tour in April of 1811, he did not know that the last of Elgin’s loot was in the hold of his ship. That same day, four friends from the winter circuit in Athens (Charles Cockerell and John Foster from Britain, Jakob Linckh and Carl Haller von Hallerstein from Bavaria) sailed past Byron’s boat, boarded for a farewell drink, then crossed overnight to the island of Aegina. Two days later they were on the mountaintop site of the Temple to Aphaia which they intended to sketch. Instead, they were to spend the next six weeks pulling an impres- sive cache of some sixteen statues out of the ground. In this presentation, I will trace the long, strange course of the Aegina Marbles from their rediscovery (1811), auction (1812), restoration (1816–1818), installation (1830), Nazification (1934), de-Nazification (1948), de- restoration (1966), and reinstallation (1972). Religion, as I hope to show, was a very complex register in this story, due in large part to the long reach of Romantic neopaganism.

Ever since the speculations of the Victorians about the inexorable progress of Man from the savagery of foraging to agriculture and civilization, Europe has been one of the main theatres of debate about transitions from foraging to farming (Chapter 1). The dominant model in the twentieth century, first developed explicitly by Gordon Childe in The Dawn of European Civilization (1925) and The Danube in Prehistory (1929), has been that of ex oriente lux, ‘light from the Near East’. According to this theory, farming began in Europe because it was introduced by Neolithic farmers from South-West Asia, who brought with them domesticated plants and animals together with a new technology that included pottery and polished stone tools. They colonized a land thinly occupied by Mesolithic foragers except at the coastal margins. In southern Europe, the first farmers would have ‘taken to their boats and paddled or sailed on the alluring waters of the Mediterranean to the next landfall—and the next’ (Childe, 1957: 16). In temperate Europe, expansion was facilitated by ‘slash-and-burn’ (swidden) agriculture practised by the first farmers: they arrived at a particular location, cleared the forest, burnt the cut timber, and planted their crops, and then moved on after a few years. The first suite of 14C dates from European Neolithic sites obtained in the 1960s astonished archaeologists, because the (uncalibrated) dates of c.6000 bc from Greek Neolithic settlements such as Nea Nikomedeia and Knossos (Fig. 9.1) were 3,000 years older than Childe’s suggested date for the beginning of the European Neolithic: c.3000 BC. He established the latter by an elaborate process of cross-dating European prehistoric sites with historically dated cultures in the eastern Mediterranean, in turn dated by links to Pharaonic Egypt. At the same time, the 14C data appeared to confirm Childe’s ex oriente lux theory, because there was a clear trend of increasingly younger dates with distance from South-West Asia (J. G. D. Clark, 1965; Fig. 1.7). The dates of c .6000 BC in south-east Europe were in the same time-frame as dates for PPNB Neolithic settlements in South-West Asia, dates in central Europe and the Mediterranean were of the order of 4500 BC, and dates from Early Neolithic sites on the Atlantic margins of Europe were nearer 3000 BC.

The discovery of Argon is a great example of how little bitty precise measurements of stuff everyone knows sometimes lead to tremendous leaps of basic knowledge, because we don’t always know what we think we know. The story has a long and meandering lead-in, beginning with Aristotle’s idea that “air” was one of the four earthly primeval elements, an idea which lasted some two thousand years—until the eighteenth century, when an Englishman named Joseph Priestley began to fool around in his homemade laboratory next door to a brewery. Though he supported the American Revolution, he made no enemies in England for that, for there was as large a proportion of Englishmen as Americans who believed that the colonists were in the right. But when, a few years later, he sounded loud public hurrahs for the French Revolution, applauded the beheading of King Louis, and called for the same action against King George, he went a shout too far. Members of parliament called for action against the seditious minister, a mob broke into his home and ravaged it, and all in all he decided it might be time to sail away. He was welcomed in America, where he was honored more for his theology than his scientific work (an opinion which he shared), until his thoughts evolved to the realization that the Christ story was simply an old superstition dressed up in Hebraic dress: God—Zeus, Wotan, Jupiter, Jehovah, take your pick—impregnates a human woman and the resulting child is less godly than the godfather but more so than the human mother. Jesus was only the most recent incarnation of the tale; Pythagoras, Alexander the Great, and a whole host of others share the same superstitious glory. But trying to convince his new compatriots was a losing game; his popularity waned, and the model community he planned was never populated. Never mind.
