Testo completoAs students progress through adolescent development, researchers have observed a lack of male participation in choral music activities. This male to female imbalance is often attributed to a perception that singing is a feminine activity and results in a lack of balance in choral music ensembles. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore adolescent gender identity as it relates to singing interest and choral music participation. An explanatory sequential mixed methods design was used, in which quantitative data were collected and analyzed followed by in-depth qualitative interviews. A group of 9th grade students (n=174) completed the Children’s Sex Role Inventory and the Singing Interest Inventory to gauge their self-perceived levels of masculinity and femininity along with their level of singing interest. Information from the quantitative portion of this study indicated that girls had both a higher interest in singing and a higher rate of participation in choral music ensembles than their male peers. A significant contribution of this study was that although singing is often perceived as feminine, no significant differences were found between categorized gender groups and singing interest.
Qualitative interviews were conducted with two groups of male students who were not enrolled in choir: low singing interest scores (n=4) and high singing interest scores (n=4). Transcribed and coded interviews resulted in the following themes: low singing interest, Guys are physical, Girls are feminine, Shared perceptions, Guys don’t sing, and Calling them names; high singing interest, Men want muscles, Girls are expressive, Shared perceptions, Choir is for girls, Get made fun of, and No labels. The shared theme Shared perceptions suggests that participant perceptions are the same as their parents and friends. The theme No labels was unique to the high singing interest group. Participants in that group demonstrated a higher level of acceptance for atypical gender behavior.

The purpose of the current study was to test the effects of participation in a treatment grief choir vs. standard care grief group (verbal) on bereaved persons’ perceived grief, coping, energy, social support and health and to examine the experiences of those participating in both groups. In this mixed-methods study, the results from the qualitative phenomenological focus groups were used for explaining and interpreting the findings of the Randomized Control Trial (RCT). Within the RCT, five people completed the treatment grief choir and four completed the standard care grief group (N=9). A repeated-measures ANOVA was employed to detect any statistical significance among the adult grievers. A significant within-subjects effect was found in both groups for the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) start-of-session grief, NRS end-of- session grief, Hogan Grief Reaction Checklist (HGRC), and NRS end-of-session coping measures. These results indicate that both groups showed significant improvement over time in these areas. A between-subjects effect was found for the NRS end-of-session grief and for the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) with the standard care grief group scoring significantly better over time than the treatment grief choir. Finally, one interaction effect was found for the NRS end-of-session health scores at week sixteen, with a significant gain for the standard care grief group. For the qualitative portion of this study, five members of the treatment grief choir and three of the four members from the standard care grief group participated in separate focus group interviews. A seventeen-step analysis of the interview data was employed to discover meaningful descriptions and experiences while maintaining validity and integrity of the process. The following categories emerged from the analysis of the treatment grief choir interview: The Grief Choir Did Help; Songs were Important in Grief; Making Musical Connections Helped; Interactions with Grievers were Valued; The Music Therapists Influenced the Experience; and Gained Insights about Grief. The following categories emerged from the standard care grief group: Standard Care Did Help; Timing and Composition of Group Mattered; Standard Care was a Complex Experience; and The Experience of Being in Research. Recommendations for future grief choirs and standard care grief groups are discussed.

Testo completoAbstract : Choir singing is known to be beneficial : this study chose to measure its impacts on elderly people. The quantitative and quasi-experimental design included three groups : the Choir, Hebdo-Bistro (conference workshops), the comparison group, and the Control group. This longitudinal, intergenerational study lasted for three seasons. Cognition (Mattis, 3MS, Trail Making, Numeral WAIS Scale, Formal and Categorical Fluences), humor (Psychological Well-being of American Adults, Geriatric Depression Scale), self-efficacy (Schwartzer), and autonomy (QAF questionnaire) were administered three times (pre, post, 2nd post). In addition, weekly measurements were administered on health related topics (medical consultations, medication, falls) and social participation (activities). The analyses showed no significant differences between groups. However, the intra-group analyses showed a significant improvement for the Choir (3MS, social activities), and a tendency for improvement (Formal Fluence) for the Choir and Hebdo-Bistro groups. The small sample (n =21) excludes any generalization, but the results are promising in today’s aging context.

Testo completoProstate cancer screening is highly controversial because of the benefit risk ratio. An issue is to support men susceptible to perform this screening towards informed choice and shared decision-making. The aim of this doctorate is to understand why men adhere to prostate cancer screening, and in a second time to improve their support. We interviewed men about their knowledge, their information seeking behaviour, and their implication in prostate cancer screening decision. This highlighted the necessity to create a new information tool to improve men’s knowledge, in particular regarding risks of the screening procedure. Finally, we investigate benefit risk trade-off with and without our information tool access. Results of this work shows that men are less favourable to a screening option after taking into account our information tool. However, benefit and risk of this screening appreciation was not changed. We need to continue efforts to allow men to make an informed choice

Testo completoThis thesis is based on a series of qualitative and quantitative surveys. It provides a systematic analysis of French upper classes’ attitudes towards politics. I argue that behaviors that do not fit with the usual description of upper classes as politically competent, committed and well-represented should be taken into account. This approach allows a better understanding of how upper classes actually participate, make electoral choices and defend their interests. The thesis develops as follows. First, I show that investigating why bourgeois occasionally abstain from voting or avoid talking politics leads to a thorough comprehension of the link between social status and participation. Second, I provide evidence that the analysis of uncommon trajectories of members of the bourgeoisie who support left-wing parties indirectly reveals what makes the former more likely to be conservative voters. Third, I study how upper classes members use their proximity to politicians as a resource, and the risks they run by doing so. Finally, I study what happens when upper classes attempt to control space, but are deprived of politicians’ support

Testo completoThis thesis aims at verifying the effect of consumer's participation level to a virtual brand community on his brand loyalty intentions. The concept of commitment is introduced as mediator of the relationship between consumer participation to virtual brand community and brand loyalty intentions. Given the particularity of communities, two aspects of commitment are considered: brand commitment and community commitment. The theoretical model is tested on a sample of 1065 participants to a virtual community of "Nikon France". Results support a double and successive mediation of community commitment and of brand commitment in the relationship between community participation and brand loyalty. Moreover, three moderators are identified in the model: membership length, expertise and community participation benefits

Testo completoOur research focuses on the emotional and axiological determinants of investment choice in equity crowdfunding. We defend the thesis of a projects choice determined in part by the values and emotions of the individual investor. Our literature review is transversal to several fields of social sciences. Thus, the established theoretical framework articulates finance, marketing, HRM and psychology. An explanatory model using structural equations is proposed and tested empirically using data from a laboratory experiment. Our results confirm that values and interest in the project, an affective variable, have a significant effect on investor choices and dominate analytical judgment in the absence of real and virtual social interactions. An original theory is proposed to improve the understanding of the studied phenomenon, beyond the contributions of the signal theory. This theory, emotional matching, personalizes behaviors and offers a prism of reading based on the congruence between characteristics of the project and investor preferences. Its implementation by a model derived from the explanatory model associated with an ad hoc similarity measure produces encouraging predictive results. Our work ends with a set of managerial suggestions arising from our findings

Brownfields are often contaminated yet. Therefore, it creates numerous obstacles to reuse them.Firstly, brownfields redevelopment’s benefits areunderestimated whereas costs are overestimated bydevelopers. Secondly, brownfields are plagued with thestigma effect. This effect persists even after remediationprocess (e.g., individuals may not use facilities on aformer contaminated brownfield). Thirdly, new uses cancause conflicts between the stakeholders. As such, thisthesis deals with contaminated brownfieldredevelopment taking into account both themultidimensionality of stakeholders, their preferencesand their perceptions. developers. In a first part, we study barriers to brownfieldredevelopment and how to tackle them using a surveyamong 76 French developers. In a second part, weanalyse the importance of the stigma associated withcontaminated brownfields. A first survey (803observations), conducted at national level, investigatesindividuals’ perceptions, representations and preferencesregarding brownfield redevelopment. A second survey(338 observations), conducted among five municipalitiesimpacted by such sites, specifies their preferences usinga discrete choice experiment. In the third part, we applya participatory multicriteria decision aid. It determinesthe most consensual projects in the case of acontaminated site. Testo completoThis thesis consists of four stand-alone essays in 'the field of the economics of education. The first part comprises three chapters which analyse the interactions of parents and schools. The central questions here are: Why do parents become involved in their children's school-education? Can and should schools increase the levels of involvement by parents? Who benefits, and to what extent, from parental involvement programmes? To answer these policy-relevant questions empirically, l draw on a Iiterature review and on results from two randomized control trials which l helped design and run. These experiments prove that schools are able to increase parents' awareness and that parental inputs have strong effects on pupil behavior. Result also show the existence of important positive spillover effects beyond the targeted populations. Part II explores how employers perceive the education a qualifications of their workers. According to human capital theories, the output of education is a productive asset, a bundle of knowledge and skills to which economists refer as "human capital". In contrast, screening theories of education view information about the quality of workers (about their skills, knowledge, and attitudes) as the primary product of educational services. In this part, l show that employers' information about employees' educational. Qualifications is highly noisy. This suggests that the information contained in educational certificates is often of limited interest to employers

Testo completoThe objectives of this work were to assess and compare the efficiency (survival, quality of life and cost) of patients initially treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD) or hemodialysis (HD), to search determinants that guide the initial choice towards either dialysis techniques and to assess the trajectory between dialysis modalities. The first part of this thesis was to analyze the database, from the PACA region (2004 – 2014), issue from the French REIN registry. This analysis was descriptive and focused to analyze main characteristics and outcome (survival) of dialysis patients (initial dialysis and switching) and to identify risk factors. The second part of this thesis was to measure and compare dialysis patient quality of life and health’s care costs between dialysis modalities (HD and PD). Database was issued from PHRC. The third part was to search the factors related to the initial choice of dialysis technique, PD or HD. This work was the subject of a targeted survey of patients and neurologists in a dialysis structure. The survival and the quality of life were similar between hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Switching to HD may improve positively the survival compared to those who remained on PD, whereas, switching to PD was not. The DP is less expensive than HD. Medical contraindications to the PD were for 26.7%. In the absence of contraindications, patient preference and professional practices (information and practical center) are the two main factors related to the initial choice of dialysis technique, in particular to choice of PD. Better information could help to increase the choice of DP

Take choir members of Singing Singer in Taichung as subjects, the study aims to investigate their motivation for leisure participation, obstruction to leisure participation as well as the relationship between the leisure participation and the obstruction. Data is collected by means of in-depth interview. Eight choir members of Singing Singer in Taichung are selected as subjects due to their major in music. The result of the research shows: (i) Motivation for leisure participation: interpersonal relationship is the only one factor included in all the participants. An interest in and an capability of singing are also two factors for leisure participation among the subjects. (ii) Obstruction to leisure participation: the accessibility of the destination as well as the time spent in the chore are two main factors for a breakdown in leisure participation. Time as well as work are factors difficult to overcome and easily result in obstruction. Other factors such as money, family and work are three factors also cause obstruction for part of the subjects. (iii) The relationship between the leisure participation and the obstruction is shown in three ways: (1) the obstruction factors such as time, work, money, tiredness and climate has a significant effect in the leisure participation; (2) health condition has an insignificant effect in the leisure participation; (3) the obstruction factors such as family, traffic and pressure has a significant effect in the leisure participation only for some subjects.

This study aimed to explore the participatory attitude of Taiwanese Presbyterian Church choir members. Researcher reviewed relevant academic discourses and refereed to the outcomes of pre-interviews with 21 choir members. In addition, a self-designed questionnaire was carried out to investigate the opinions of choir members. All data was collected from 124 churches and 1150 members with 735 responded questionnaire, and analyzed by software SPSS 14.0 for Windows. Analysis methods used through this software included frequency distribution, percentage, mean, standard deviation, T test and One-way ANOVA. Finally, quantitative and qualitative data were compared and conclusions were drawn from the survey result and documentary analysis: I. All the Taiwan Presbyterian Church choir members in different positions retain positive and active participatory attitude. II. The participation attitudes of the Taiwanese Presbyterian Church choir member vary by gender, religious belief, age, the length of becoming a Christian, the length of joining church choir, and different positions in choir. A. The primary factor determining the participation attitude is religious belief. B. The length of becoming a Christian has a considerable impact on the participation attitude. C. The length of joining church choir is positively correlative with the participation attitude. D. Senior members retain higher participation attitude than the younger. E. In terms of different positions in choir, the conductor has better participation attitude than the persons in other positions. F. Female members in the church choir are statistically significant higher than male members concerning the participation attitude. III. With respect to the viewpoints on current choir situation of the church choir members: A. Age has been identified as the important factor in determining viewpoints. B. Other variables such as gender, religious belief, the length of becoming a Christian, the length of joining church choir and different positions in the choir make no differences in terms of statistical significance. Finally, according to the research findings, some suggestions are proposed for the Taiwanese Presbyterian Church and relevant institutions, church choir members and the later researchers. In this study, researcher collected the data through acoustic analysis, aerodynamic analysis and MC-VAPP scales of the subjects, compared the differences in the voice function and voice quality of life between 63 young women, aged between 20 and 29, with and without choir participation. Independent Samples t Test was used to analyze the differences between the two young-women groups. The results showed that choral group had significant lower levels of Noise-to-Harmonic ratio, significant higher levels of mean speaking fundamental frequency and highest speaking fundamental frequency, and significant lower levels of Mandarin Chinese Version of the Voice Activity and Participation Profile (MC-VAPP) score regarding ”the effect of speaking in quiet environments”. On the other hand, the average of jitter and shimmer of choir group were both lower than that of non-choir group, but there were no significant differences between the two groups. The average of lowest speaking fundamental frequency, speaking fundamental frequency range, speaking fundamental frequency standard deviation of choir group were all higher than non-choir group, but there were no significant differences between the two groups. There were no significant differences of mean speaking intensity, highest speaking intensity, lowest speaking intensity, speaking intensity range, speaking intensity standard deviation between two groups. This study showed that choir participation can maintain the voice stability of young women and increase the sensitivity of young women to the change in their voice, avoiding the occurrence of further voice damage. The above results can provide as a reference for clinicians in planning voice care programs.

Christian music has played an important role the development of Taiwan music history, especially in the areas of contemporary Western music. Through the introduction of Christian missionaries in the 19th Century as well as advocate of western music during the period of Japanese colonization, Christian music has had profound influence to Taiwan society since. However, through out past one hundred more years, the transformation of political, social, economic, and cultural environment, Christian music is no longer in a leading role of the music society in Taiwan, and Taipei YMCA Oratorio Choir has testified the evolution of the history. The main purposes of this research are to understand the history of development of the oldest Choir, to investigate its relationship with the society of Taiwan as well as to know how it impacted the development of the Taiwanese music society. Since its establishment in 1947, Taipei YMCA Oratorio Choir has involved in society music activities and has had weekly practices since then. Of its public performances, the Christmas charity performance of “Messiah” is the most important and well-known activity to people. Being the 57th year performance of “Messiah” in this year of 2003, Taipei YMCA Oratorio Choir earned its reputation as the “Messiah” Oratorio Choir in Taiwan. Yet, another main topic of this research is to disclose the evolution of functions and the role of the Choir under the transformation of music society. Through collection of historical data, interviews with the Choir members, and recording of practices, the thesis has re-exhibited the contribution of those senior members to Taiwan’s music society development. Taipei YMCA Oratorio Choir was not only one of the most important Christian Choir groups but also a key pusher to the development of social music activities. However, viewing from the missions of the Choir: evangelism, charity in music concert, and sacred music promotion, the importance of Taipei YMCA Oratorio Choir in the social community in such functions has diminished during recent years. Some critics are made and suggestions are proposed in terms of music talent development, sacred music education, compositions been performed, and forms of Messiah charity music concert.

Testo completoWe are focusing on the study of citizenship as seen by a group of influential Muslim people, extensively involved in public affairs in various fields: social, religion, politics, community and academic. This group of thirteen persons has been questioned in an open interview manner about citizenship with a goal to understand how they perceive their citizenship and which social experiences influence that vision and shape their position. The qualitative analysis using a discourse analysis methodology brings out a “Muslim Quebecers theory of citizenship” based on different definitions of citizenship: a "global citizenship" that is "full" at odds with one another labeled as "second class citizenship", both defined by a set of rights and duties. This logic of definition is defined by a set of identities cumulated during their personal experience and shaped by their current priorities as social actors. It has its roots in Islam as a spiritual referential. In other cases the citizenship is defined by the completion of the local Canadian/Quebecer nationality by Islam as a lifestyle within a Canadian nationalist ideology.
