Comedy plays an increasingly central role in British cultural life. Defying the recent economic downturn, it has grown into a booming multi-million pound industry, both on TV and on the live circuit. The few studies that exist disregard the problems: the adoption of assumptions which limit discussion, the inconsistent terminology, the lingering prejudice regarding comedy as inferior to tragedy.
