Eloquin, Xavier. "The container contained : biography and role as factors in managing stress for secondary head-teachers : a psychosocial analysis". Thesis, University of Essex, 2018. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/21740/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This research explored the experiences of three secondary headteachers and the way in which role conception, informed by unconscious processes, functions as a mechanism for managing the stresses and demands of said role. The research was underpinned by a psychosocial framework and used an explicitly psychoanalytic epistemology. The research used semi-structured interviews to explore influential biographical factors, which were then explored using a psychoanalytic lens. This produced a series of themes used to thematically analyse their accounts of their jobs and the stresses and strains within it. The ensuing analysis revealed that the unconscious patterns, implicit in their narratives, influenced both role conception and the way they perceived and related to the organisations they led. In discussing these findings, links were made to relevant psychoanalytic and systems-psychodynamic theory; especially Bion's work on containment and alpha function, as well as Rice's seminal thinking about the way in which the unconscious influences role acquisition and task engagement. Further applications to both theories are suggested. A central argument is that working with school leaders has a systemic impact on schools and school populations, something well within the remit and consultative skill-set of Educational Psychologists. This research concludes that unconscious patterns and processes are involved in the management of stress and anxiety and that this is done through unconsciously "shaping" the way headteachers conceive of the role and the schools they lead.

ABSTRACT: This study aims to explicate the intersubjective relational dynamics of a mother dyad foster mother - adopted daughter, in its various forms. Based on a psychoanalytic conception of the subject and through the articulation of Bion's ideas, the objective of this work was made: to understand how the subjective processes and dispersion / integration of subjectivities are interconnected, enabling a new beginning with the integration of old transformed and (re) meaning, framed in intersubjective dialectic, accessed through the Rorschach method. The starting point of this study was the theoretical conceptions of Bion on the container-contained relation, α function, rêverie, and how the projective identification serves the intersubjective communication. To access the dimensions of psychic reality under study, specific procedures were created to analyse the Rorschach narratives, and equipping the instrument of a greater sensitivity towards the object of study. The analysis of a joint application protocol to a foster mother and adoptive daughter was conducted using the established procedures in order to learn and understand how transformation, (re)creation and (re)significance is processed in the intersubjective dialectic, extending the capabilities of the instrument in this regard.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT: Relying on an adolescent’s Rorschach protocol, the author of this work tried to study, in a comprehensive view, the nature and the quality of mental space in adolescence. Following in the wake of a conceptualization that pierces through the construction, development, structures and functions of mental space, this work is based on the adolescence period where a greater appeal to negotiation between past and present, inner and outer reality, and between the Other and I leads to the relational reconstruction and transformation of mental space. This projective methodology seems the most adequate since it allows the expression of that commitment between the inner and outer reality in an intersubjective context where several expressions of adolescence can be disclosed and signified. As the adolescence unstable identity includes an oscillation between regressive and progressive movements, this work will enhance the elements that are a result of a creative process rather than a pathologic one.

Abstract (sommario):
Transient laminar free convection in a water-filled rectangular enclosure has been studied experimentally and numerically. The study aimed at gaining an insight into the physical phenomena, illustrated by the flow patterns and the temperature stratification, from the initial stage of a homogeneous fluid through the transient evolving process. The experimental setup consisted of two rectangular water-filled enclosures: the smaller one contained a heat source and was centrally immersed in the larger one. Dye was injected for visualization of the rising boundary layer over the inner container walls, and the accumulation of the colored layers in the upper zone of the outer container. Simultaneously, the temperature measurements, by thermocouples and an infra-red camera, displayed the formation of a stratified structure. The numerical study was conducted three-dimensionally, using the Fluent 6.3 software. The stratified temperature field, observed experimentally, was well-predicted by the numerical model. The heat transfer rates and the transient averaged Nusselt numbers were compared with the data in the literature. The current, constant power input yielded Nu/Ra0.25∼0.7 in the range of Fo/Ra0.25 = 0–3.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A high-quality precision-controlled turntable apparatus was fabricated to probe the dynamic behavior of a viscous fluid contained in a cylindrical container. Vortex breakdown(s) produced by a rotating endwall disk was visualized by using a fluorescent dye injection technique, and its flow field was measured by using a particle image velocimetry. This flow is characterized by two non-dimensional parameters, i.e., the height-to-radius ratio H/R and the rotating Reynolds number Re = Ω2/v. Limiting boundaries for single, double and triple vortex breakdowns in steady flow were re-plotted to compare with the previous visualization studies of Escudier. The locations of stagnation points of the vortex breakdown bubble(s) in steady flow were measured quantitatively. The overall experimental results in the steady flow were in excellent agreement with Escudier’s data. In unsteady flow, the amplitude and time period of periodic axial oscillation, and the polar angle and time period of precession, were measured. The domains for periodic axial oscillation and for precession in unsteady flow were delineated.

We report measurements of the torque required to restrain a polycarbonate spindle surrounded by ferrofluid in a cylindrical container and subjected to the rotating field generated by a two-pole magnetic induction motor stator, as a function of applied field amplitude and frequency, and for various values of the geometric aspect ratios of the problem. Simultaneously, an ultrasonic method was used to measure the azimuthal velocity profiles in the ferrofluid contained in the annular gap of our apparatus. These measurements are compared to a rigorous regular perturbation solution in the small parameter Ωτ (Ω = frequency and τ = ferrofluid magnetic relaxation time) of the ferrohydrodynamic flow problem in the zero spin viscosity and linear magnetization limits.

Abstract (sommario):
The results of an experimental investigation of natural convection driven flow of liquid gallium are presented. The gallium contained by a rectangular box with two opposite ends held at different temperatures and is subject to a uniform horizontal magnetic field. The objective of this study was to examine the damping effect of a magnetic field on the natural convection in a liquid metal. A hot film anemometry was used to measure the velocity profile and a thermocouple was used to measure the temperature field. The hot-film probe was calibrated over a narrow range of temperatures in a rotating container fill with liquid gallium. The velocity and temperature profiles are compared with previous numerical simulations and reasonably good agreement was found. The damping effect of the external magnetic field was observed in both the temperature and the velocity profiles and found to increase as the strength of the magnetic field increases.

Abstract (sommario):
Carbon nanofibers in polymer-based composites reduce the electrical resistivity of the composite but can be up to 100 times more expensive than the bulk polymer. This work uses acoustic focusing to organize and compact carbon nanofibers in a mineral oil mixture. The result is a decrease in the composite electrical resistivity without an increase in the global volume fraction of the fibers in the composite and associated material cost. The composite consisted of Pyrograf PR-19-LHT carbon nanofibers mixed in light mineral oil at 1.6% volume fraction carbon nanofibers. The mixture was contained in a 1 cm × 1 cm × 4 cm glass cuvette. A PZT-4 piezoelectric transducer, epoxied to the external face of one of the sidewalls, generated the acoustic radiation forces in the container. A 1.179 MHz sinusoidal signal powered the transducer, producing a standing wave with 27 nodes and 13 antinodes in the container. A digital multimeter performed the 2-wire resistance measurement before, during and after focusing. Settling of the filler due to gravity resulted in an initial drop in the electrical resistance. Once the mixture reached steady state, toggling the signal power off and on also toggled the approximate electrical resistance between the 19.2 MOhms and 11.5 MOhms respectively. This work also presents a simple volume fraction model, which predicted that the focused resistance would be 34% of the unfocused value. In the experiment, acoustic focusing reduced the electrical resistance to 60% of the resistance in the unfocused mixture, demonstrating acoustic focusing as a method for reducing electrical conductivity within a composite.

Abstract (sommario):
Rapid solutions are needed throughout the world to meet electrical demands for disaster relief, stabilizing development, industrial or research centers, exploratory drilling and mining, military stationing, and other off-grid or weak-grid applications. This need for on-demand power requires a mobile, modular, and self-sufficient power system designed for rapid deployment and seamless integration. This paper describes a mobile power solution specifically designed for disaster response situations like the Haiti earthquake in 2010, the primary motivating case for this work. A public-private partnership between Arizona State University and NRG Energy was formed to complete the use-inspired design. The mobile system was scoped to meet electricity requirements for a command center, clinic, cellular communications, kitchen, short-term lodging and public lighting, and other critical loads needed to stabilize development in the wake of natural or anthropogenic disaster that destroys the local electrical infrastructure. Deploying modular and self-contained micro-grids has the potential to reduce human harm following disaster by providing a decentralized network of electrical generation assets designed to meet critical loads for human survival and well being. In addition, since no two emergency situations are alike, the proposed solution provides flexibility and scalability to meet constraints for local renewable resources, fuel availability, and physical deployment space. The final system includes a 20 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) array, 10 kWh of lithium-ion battery storage, a 10 kW inverter system, a control computer, and a 20 kW diesel generator for supplemental power. The solar array is packed within a 20’ steel shipping container for ease and safe transport, thereby making the solution “containerized.” Components must be firmly mounted or secured to the walls and floors of the container for transport via a cargo freighter or helicopter. A second room was created inside the container to separate the generator from the batteries for safety purposes. The prototype can be fully deployed and functional in less than one hour’s time, and was tested against a load bank during various times of the day to illustrate how the power system controls shift operation between batteries, solar PV, and the generator. Sustainability, ethics, health, and safety features were considered in relation to the design specifications, manufacturability, and design scalability. These considerations included the lifecycle of the container, maintenance, modularity, intuitive operation, accessibility, and component temperature regulation, among others. Integration of other technologies such as wind power generation and water purification have the potential to bring further benefit through the plug-and-play containerized micro-grid solution.

Abstract (sommario):
Two cans containing plutonium bearing materials were found during radiography surveillance activities to be bulged. The cans had been stored in DOT 6M shipping containers at the Savannah River Site. The material in the first can (Item CZA96-179) was packaged can/bag/can configuration with the inner and outer cans being crimp sealed. The crimp sealed innermost can was clearly deformed from the radiography picture taken for surveillance purposes. This material had been stored in the shipping container since the mid 1970’s. The second can (Item 50014440) contained plutonium bearing material of a different origin. The material had been repackaged at the Savannah River Site in the mid 1990’s, and the repackaged can was stored in a 6M shipping drum. A special puncturing tool, which secured the can and allowed for a very controlled puncture of both outer and inner cans was used in a glovebox. The glovebox has a dry air system and an argon supply. The puncturing tool utilized a non-sparking punch and an argon purge. The cans were repackaged into filtered outer cans. A description of the puncturing tool, repackaging activities, and of the materials will be provided.

In an exploratory experiment, utilizing a flow visualization technique, a droplet of water was supplemented with fiber and released into a container of liquid. The liquid inside container consisted of a thin layer of oil laid on top of the water, in which a small amount of bromothymol-blue indicator was added. The liquid droplet also contained a dilute solution of NaOH along with the small amount of fiber supplement. Thus, as the droplet dived through the two immiscible layers, the path of the diffused droplet exhibited a dark blue color due to its greater pH. It was found that due to the weight of the added fiber, the drop began to form an inverted mushroom. Then, the weight continues to pull the droplet to the bottom of the container where the fiber-enhanced liquid rotates in a circular path. A portion of fiber remains latched onto the oil layer, which sustains the diffusing fiber stretching into a single, straight line filament. Yet, over time the straight filament began to buckle and bend. Over time, the droplet became increasingly unstable prior returning to a single filament once more. This transformation was evidenced until the deep blue faded as the pH level diffused. An additional experiment was carried out using a larger droplet. The droplet with a larger surface area reacted similarly, but passed the oil/ water interface at multiple contact points, as opposed to a sole point. Subsequently, multiple bending filaments appeared in the liquid. In time these filaments combined into a distinct, deformed, filament. After which, the continued instability of the filament broke into two segments, that with time became orderly. In the end, a pair of filaments was formed from the larger fiber-laced droplet. The idea of controlling drug delivery has been studied from a plethora of angles, however, how a drug diffuses with the addition of fiber has not often been visualized. This visual investigation will establish the fundamental physics that is a critical first step in the ability to understand, predict and control the motion of a fiber enriched liquid droplet releasing into another liquid. It is of fundamental importance to the medical field and beyond if the addition of a fiber solution can influence medicine, or a solution, to reach a particular location. Further research on this topic would involve the effect of fluid viscosity and surface tension to improve drug delivery.

Abstract (sommario):
A shielded cask is used to move welded containers whose contents are liquid. The requirement controlling the design of the shielded cask was the 9-meter drop. Since the orientation of the cask is arbitrary, it is required to assume an orientation which would result in the most damage to the cask. For such drops the target is usually considered to be an unyielding surface. The shielded cask of interest is not designed with components to mitigate the damage due to such drops. The shielded cask contains a thick shell of lead which is considered to move and deform during the 9-meter drop. Additionally, the container of liquid is not physically attached to the cask, and is free to move within the confined space during the event as well. Each component has its own unique stiffness and mass characteristics which could result in a different dynamic response. Since the dynamic response of each component is different, the most damage to a particular component may be sensitive to the boundary conditions. The unyielding surface would maximize the damage to the impact surface of the cask, but as a result, could mitigate the maximum loading applied to other components of the cask. Most actual targets are comprised of concrete. The evaluations are performed using an explicit finite element computer code. Consequently, it is necessary to monitor certain energies, such as the hourglass energy or a sliding energy indicating the behavior of the contact surface associated with the target. These parameters confirm the accurate behavior of the elements comprising the finite element model. Given that components can have a different response, the hourglass energy may also vary. Varying the boundary conditions will affect these types of parameters. In this paper, the authors present the results of a study of the effect of the boundary conditions on the shielded cask components response to the 9-meter drop. The primary orientation of interest is the end drop. The end drop maximizes the axial loading to the container. It is this orientation which could result in the most compression of the lead shield leading to increased radiation exposure. The container is considered as a pressure vessel and its integrity would be evaluated using the plastic strain based criteria contained in Section III, Division 3. The shielded cask, however, is not a pressure vessel and was evaluated using Section VIII, Division 2, Part 5. Both evaluations used the plastic strains and triaxiality factors determined from the drop evaluations.

Abstract (sommario):
An attractive product successfully attracts people when it is first introduced. More importantly, it maintains people’s interest throughout its lifetime. A product’s ability to maintain attractiveness is an important factor in the design of a long-life product. Yet, what specific product qualities provide this aspect of attractiveness and what specific design attributes affect quality. People perceive product quality by the use of different sensory modalities such as vision and touch. The dominance of a particular sensory modality and perception of product quality may change over time during product use. Two aspects are involved in this type of time-series change: (1) physical changes in the product (e.g. deterioration) and (2) users’ psychological changes during their experiences with a product. In this paper, we propose an experimental methodology that can be used to quantify the effects of design characteristics in relation to certain sensory modalities on users’ appraisals of product quality and on the customers’ beliefs during continued product use. The methodology analyzes changes in effects with respect to design parameters in relation to certain sensory modalities and in relation to two aspects of change. We applied the methodology to the design of a face lotion container. Qualities perceived by both vision and touch exerted significant effects on participants’ decisions to purchase a product and continue its use. We asked 30 female participants aged between twenty and thirty years to use a sample daily for one month. Participants were required to record their opinions of the samples (online assessment). On the first day, one week, and one month later, we invited participants to visit the laboratory. During those visits, they were asked to assess 24 samples that contained different visual designs, varied surface finishes, differing amounts of lotion, and different surface conditions (offline assessment). Based on these results, we demonstrated that the significance of design factors that participants perceived by different sensory modalities qualitatively and quantitatively changed over time. In this case study of lotion container design, we discovered that the potentially significant effect of a delicate surface finish that provided comfortable tactile sensations regardless of surface conditions on quality perception during long-term product use.
