Dessì, Giuseppe, e Mario Pinna. Tre amici tra la Sardegna e Ferrara. A cura di Costanza Chimirri. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-6655-478-3.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The chapter deals with the distinction between continuity and contact. Two objects are in contact if they have their boundaries in the same place. Two parts of a single object are continuous if they share a boundary. The topological difference between continuity and contact‐‐‐the number of boundaries involved‐‐‐is grounded in the ontological difference between ontologically independent objects and parts of a single object that are not ontologically separate. Continuity is thus connected to the unity of an object. The spatial wholeness and continuity of an object is explained by its form. The chapter provides an account of how the study of bodies relates to an overarching analysis of physical substances.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter investigates the relationship between monologue and dialogue in Cuban revolutionary discourse. It proposes to attend to the “mono-logic”—the semiotic and ideological forces designed to compel alignments toward unity, coherence, and continuity, that are, asymptotically, never quite reached. Cuba’s political leaders have for decades insisted that citizens undergo a continual process of conscientization in which inner selves and outer displays jointly cultivate commitment to revolutionary principles. There are two semiotic calibrations of such discourse: (1) the charismatic, in which heroic figures such as José Martí and Fidel Castro speak with overwhelming authority; and (2) the nomic, in which slogans on banners and in graffiti present universalized Truths voiced by no one and therefore, potentially, by everyone. Inevitably, heteroglossic criticism of the mono-logic surfaces in irony, parody, and even silence. The chapter argues that the monologic drive for unity across psyche, self, society, and history co-constitutes and reframes the dialogic.

Schmitt, Stéphane. Serial Homology as a Challenge to Evolutionary Theory. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199377176.003.0011.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The problem of the repeated parts of organisms was at the center of the biological sciences as early as the first decades of the 19th century. Some concepts and theories (e.g., serial homology, unity of plan, or colonial theory) introduced in order to explain the similarity as well as the differences between the repeated structures of an organism were reused throughout the 19th and the 20th century, in spite of the fundamental changes during this long period that saw the diffusion of the evolutionary theory, the rise of experimental approaches, and the emergence of new fields and disciplines. Interestingly, this conceptual heritage was at the core of any attempt to unify the problems of inheritance, development, and evolution, in particular in the last decades, with the rise of “evo-devo.” This chapter examines the conditions of this theoretical continuity and the challenges it brings out for the current evolutionary sciences.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This chapter includes some additional material on homotopies. In particular, for a smooth variety V, there exists an “inflation” homotopy, taking a simple point to the generic type of a small neighborhood of that point. This homotopy has an image that is properly a subset of unit vector V, and cannot be understood directly in terms of definable subsets of V. The image of this homotopy retraction has the merit of being contained in unit vector U for any dense Zariski open subset U of V. The chapter also proves the continuity of functions and homotopies using continuity criteria and constructs inflation homotopies before proving GAGA type results for connectedness. Additional results regarding the Zariski topology are given.

VanCour, Shawn. Making Radio Genres. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190497118.003.0003.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This chapter addresses processes of genre formation, exploring the role that concepts of radiogénie played in developing new programming forms and a larger sound-mindedness in period producers and audiences. Beginning with a survey of early radio genres and debates surrounding their sonic appropriateness, the chapter then pursues a more detailed case study of the period’s dominant genre, musical variety. Responding to pressures for programming with unity and distinction while ensuring varied content with broad appeal, producers pursued three key strategies for this genre: (1) inclusion of a program host as central unifying figure, (2) interstitial continuity uniting musical selections around a common theme, and (3) the “continuity program,” with weak dramatic frame stories linking otherwise diverse musical offerings. Fulfilling larger economic imperatives without compromising aesthetic potential, this third format was championed as proof of radio’s capacity to offer unique and valued contributions to an expanding field of modern sound art.

Abstract (sommario):
Chapter 2 reviews research and theory on the life story and its development and relations to other aspects of personality. The authors introduce the integrative framework of McAdams and Pals, who described three levels in a broad model of personality: personality traits; personal goals, values, and projects; and the unique life story, which provides a degree of unity and purpose to the individual’s life. This narrative, which develops in late adolescence and emerging adulthood, as individuals become able to author their own stories, includes key scenes of emotional and personal importance to provide a sense of continuity, while remaining flexible and dynamic in incorporating changes in the self over time. The chapter ends with a description of Alison, an emerging adult from our Canadian Futures Study, who illustrates these levels and what they tell about personality development during this period.

Abstract (sommario):
Kant is committed to the reality of a subject self, outside time but active in forming experience. Timeless activity is problematic, but that can be dealt with. But he holds that the subject of experience is not an object of experience, so nothing can be known about it; this raises a problem about the status of his own theory. But he ought to allow that we can know of its existence and activity, as preconditions of experience: the Critique allows that synthetic a priori truths can be known in this way. However, its identity conditions remain unknowable. Kant’s unity of apperception shares much with Locke’s continuity of consciousness, but does not determine the identity of a thing. Personal identity is bodily identity. Only Kant’s moral philosophy justifies recognizing other selves; it could warrant ascribing a similar status to animals.

Arthur, Richard T. W. Passive Force and Corporeal Substance. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198812869.003.0007.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This chapter treats various issues concerning Leibniz’s accounts of force and of corporeal substance: the status of passive force, given that substance is a thing that acts, how extension is founded in force, and the issue of substantial bonds. It is argued that Leibniz’s position is that an entelechy can never act in isolation: its action must always take into consideration the actions of the other created substances with which it coexists. Extension arises from the resistance to penetration resulting from the diffusion of entelechies and passive forces throughout matter, while the unity and continuity of body is relative to the observer. Leibniz does not propose substantial bonds out of dissatisfaction with this standard account, but in an attempt to satisfy the Jesuits’ demand for the real union of body and soul, which ultimately conflicts with the actuality of subordinate forms implicit in his own position.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This chapter breaks dissenting church practice down into basic units in order to analyse the basis for understanding the ‘protean organizational creativity and adaptability’ of dissenting Protestantism. The chapter uses this framework to point to drivers for ‘malformation’ and some of the less fortunate outcomes of dissenting change and expansion. The denomination, it notes, is one of the most distinctive forms of D/dissenting trans-congregational organization, while the development of trans-congregational organizations has in part been driven by a distinctive understanding of the catholicity and unity of the church, and of the authority (and thus exercise of power) that most faithfully enables fuller embodiment of catholicity and unity so understood. Another key element has been the emphasis Protestants place upon personal conscience, and so individual choice. While there has been a vast proliferation of dissenting protestant forms, the basic building blocks are recognizably there, providing the basis for continuing mutual recognition and action.

Griffiths, Paul, e Karola Stotz. Developmental Systems Theory as a Process Theory. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198779636.003.0011.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Paul Griffiths and Russell D. Gray have argued that the fundamental unit of analysis in developmental systems theory should be a process—the life cycle—and not a set of developmental resources and interactions between those resources. The key concepts of developmental systems theory, epigenesis and developmental dynamics, also suggest a process view of the units of development. This chapter explores in greater depth the features of developmental systems theory that favour treating processes as fundamental in biology and examines the continuity between developmental systems theory and ideas about process in the work of several major figures in early twentieth-century biology, most notably C. H. Waddington.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This chapter describes the “rescue work” (Conrad) practiced by the three exemplars of recuperative modernism: James, Conrad, and Faulkner. Each asserts the continuing power of past ideals as a strategy for claiming continuity with a future readership. The thematic parallels and historical connections that unite these authors show that they consistently evoke the possibility of a disordered, meaningless existence in order to license the artistic task of attempting to make sense of the world. Rather than reflecting the slow victory of modernist skepticism over Victorian ideals, these authors become more experimental precisely in order to seek out what seems enduring through the onslaught of historical change. The narrative forms of these writers provide not training in suspicious reading, but an invitation to commitment and belief.

Abstract (sommario):
Successful transitioning involves input from both paediatric and adult multidisciplinary teams with overlap between the two services and tailored to the needs of each individual. This includes varying the duration of the preparatory phase and the timing of transition and eventual transfer based on the chronological and developmental age, maturity, medical stability, and psychosocial issues of each individual patient. Buddy systems and peer support may aid smooth transitioning for some, with the promotion of patients attending a clinic with similar age groups, which can include the formation of a young adult clinic. Effective collaboration between children’s and adult services is required to obtain successful transition of adolescent patients. Moving from one paediatric hospital to different adult specialists in different hospitals requires excellent communication between various teams. Some staff members from each adult nephrology unit should specialize in adolescent medicine and construct their own transitional care pathways to ensure effective communication and collaboration with appropriate paediatric units and facilitate continuity of care with ongoing educational and social programmes.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This chapter introduces the space unit vector V of stably dominated types on a definable set V. It first endows unit vector V with a canonical structure of a (strict) pro-definable set before providing some examples of stably dominated types. It then endows unit vector V with the structure of a definable topological space, and the properties of this definable topology are discussed. It also examines the canonical embedding of V in unit vector V as the set of simple points. An essential feature in the approach used in this chapter is the existence of a canonical extension for a definable function on V to unit vector V. This is considered in the next section where continuity criteria are given. The chapter concludes by describing basic notions of (generalized) paths and homotopies, along with good metrics, Zariski topology, and schematic distance.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Military strategy is the practice of reducing an adversary’s physical capacity and willingness to fight, and continuing to do so until one’s aim is achieved. It takes place in wartime and peacetime and may involve using force, directly or indirectly, as a threat. Military strategy is often divided into four components: ends (objectives), ways (courses of action), means (resources), and risk. The practice of military strategy is described along with military power, which is augmented by nine “principles of war”: objective, maneuver, surprise, mass, economy of force, offensive, security, simplicity, and unity of command. A general will likely use combinations of military strategies, linking them into a series of operations or campaigns.

Abstract (sommario):
Although the reporting of Anglican Communion and sexuality has been disproportionate and often ill-informed, debates about sexuality, including homosexuality, have been and will remain a major area of crisis and controversy, continuing to make an impact on the unity and structural development of the Communion and worldwide Anglicanism for several years. This chapter explores the range of political and cultural factors, especially the impact of globalization, which have increasingly divided the Anglican Communion, particularly the Lambeth Conference, over the subject of sexuality. It highlights that the current crisis will not be resolved until deeper theological issues, particularly in relation to the Bible, are more fully addressed by Anglicans as has been attempted in the Anglican Covenant.
