Abstract (sommario):
This paper intends to validate the application of magnetic techniques, particularly magnetic susceptibility, as sampling tools on a copper tailings terrace, by correlating them analytically. Magnetic susceptibility was measured in both the field and laboratory. Data obtained allowed for designing spatial magnetic susceptibility distribution maps, showing the horizontal variation of the tailings. In addition, boxplots were used to show the variation of magnetic susceptibility and the concentration of the elements analyzed at different depths of the copper tailings terrace. The degree of correlation between magnetic and chemical variables was defined with coefficient R2. The horizontal and vertical variations of magnetic susceptibility, the concentration of elements, and the significant correlations between them show a relationship between magnetic susceptibility and the chemical processes occurring in the tailing management facility, such as pyrite oxidation. Thus, the correlation functions obtained could be used as semiquantitative tools to characterize tailings or other mining residues.

Abstract (sommario):
An alternative approach to the study of the relationship between methodology and management theory has been presented. Based on the classical understanding of the categories under consideration, a new format for constructing scientific representations has been proposed, in which the theory is necessarily based on the formulation and application of a certain methodology. The format presented by the publication allows us not only to substantiate fundamentally the theory of management, but also to ensure its constructive positioning in the general system of knowledge based on the universality of the methodology. The development of the research presented by the publication will enable to discover fundamentally new opportunities for scientific substantiation and construction in management and other swiftly developing areas of knowledge and activities.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This non-experimental correlational study extends previous research investigating the relationship between project management methodology and reported project success, as well as the moderating variables of industry and project manager experience. The sample included North American project managers with five years’ experience, 25 years of age or older, and experience with multiple project management methodologies. The survey instrument consisted of 58 questions, utilizing a 5-point Likert scale to record responses. The survey contained three sections, including demographic information, questions related to a successful project, and questions related to a less-than successful (failed / challenged) project. 367 usable responses were received. The examination of the constructs included Pearson’s correlation coefficient as well as linear regression to determine the impact of moderating variables. Results indicated that project management methodology has a weak correlation with reported project success, and this correlation is not moderated by industry nor project manager experience. The results did not align with previously conducted studies, illustrating a need to continue the study of methods impacting success including investigating additional moderating variables.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper investigates the synchronization of fixed income markets within Eurozone countries using the new wavelet based methodology. Conventional wavelet methods that use multivariate set of variables to calculate pairwise correlation and cross correlation lead to spurious correlation due to possible relationships with other variables, amplification of type-1 errors, and results, in the form of large set of erroneous graphs. Given these disadvantages of conventional wavelet based pairwise correlation and cross-correlation method, we avoid these limitations by using wavelet multiple correlation and multiple cross correlations to analyze the relationships in Eurozone fixed income markets. Our results based on this methodology indicate that Eurozone fixed income markets are highly integrated and this integration grows with timescales, and hence there is almost no scope for independent monetary policy and bond diversification in these countries.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine whether people who engage in religious activities are more generous in terms of both religious and secular giving. Design/methodology/approach Bivariate probit (BVP) and bivariate tobit (BVT) analyses show that religious people have a greater propensity to give and higher levels of giving to both religious and secular charitable organizations. The bivariate systems permit a test of the correlation across the different giving decisions, and the correlation between religious and secular giving is found to be highly significant. Findings Religiosity positively influences both religious and secular donations. After controlling for this correlation, the impacts of religiosity on religious and secular giving are more efficient estimates but smaller than expected. Originality/value As a result of these methodological shortcomings, the causal relationship between religiosity and charitable giving is far from clear. To overcome those problems, this study uses BVP and BVT models to control for the potential correlation between religious giving and secular giving by the same individual and then draws appropriate interpretations. This study adds a firmer theoretical foundation to the existing literature.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: The use of remote sensing is increasing in agriculture and this raises questions about its efficiency over other usual methods. Thus, the purposes of this study were to compare methodologies for soil mapping, using field samplings and spectral data (from laboratory and from a simulated Landsat-TM), and to estimate their correlation. The soil samples were collected in a wetland with a great variety of soil classes. The distribution of soil classes in the maps was based on independence analysis by the Chi-square. Ten soil classes were determined in the study area, 6 in the first category level. The map of laboratory spectral data showed low correlation with conventional data. The map of spectral data that simulated wavelenghts corresponding the spectral bands of Landsat-TM sensor showed the same behavior of the previous map, with lower correlation with the conventional data. Thus, we verified that the mapping of paddy soils with spectral data shows low correlation with conventional data, however, still rather positive.

Abstract (sommario):
The improvement of ceramic synthesis and processing methodology based on digital image processing and analysis of ceramic samples is in its initial stage. The main reason is that the models are based on poorly obtained data from sample’s digital image processing. The lack of a solid statistical analysis and digital-imaging setup standardization make the method less useful that it should be if set in a sound basis. Therefore the importance of setting a new methodology in digital image processing for data acquisition on ceramic morphology analysis is essential for setting new models for customized ceramic synthesis and processing. The present paper shows results based on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) from Al2O3 ceramics obtained by starch consolidation method. Observation of different sample’s regions allowed a more accurate description of ceramic morphology. Plots of resistance to flexion versus porosity and its correlation with the grain size and shape allowed one to choose the best model for representing ceramic’s morphology. Correlation of starch percentage with sample’s porosity and mechanical resistance allowed the best experimental conditions for customized ceramic’s performance.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The purpose of this paper was to construct a canonical correlation analysis (CCA) model for the Zimbabwe stock exchange (ZSE). This paper analyses the impact of macroeconomic variables on stock returns for the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange using the canonical correlation analysis (CCA). Design/methodology/approach – Data for the independent (macroeconomic) variables and dependent variables (stock returns) were extracted from secondary sources for the period from January 1990 to December 2008. For each variable, 132 sets of data were collected. Eight top trading companies at the ZSE were selected, and their monthly stock returns were calculated using monthly stock prices. The independent variables include: consumer price index, money supply, treasury bills, exchange rate, unemployment, mining and industrial index. The CCA was used to construct the CCA model for the ZSE. Findings – Maximization of stock returns at the ZSE is mostly influenced by the changes in consumer price index, money supply, exchange rate and treasury bills. The four macroeconomic variables greatly affect the movement of stock prices which, in turn, affect stock returns. The stock returns for Hwange, Barclays, Falcon, Ariston, Border, Caps and Bindura were significant in forming the CCA model. Research limitations/implications – During the research period, some companies delisted due to economic hardships, and this reduced the sample size for stock returns for respective companies. Practical implications – The results from this research can be used by policymakers, stock market regulators and the government to make informed decisions when crafting economic policies for the country. The CCA model enables the stakeholders to identify the macroeconomic variables that play a pivotal role in maximizing the strength of the relationship with stock returns. Social implications – Macroeconomic variables, such as consumer price index, inflation, etc., directly affect the livelihoods of the general populace. They also impact on the performance of companies. The society can monitor economic trends and make the right decisions based on the current trends of economic performance. Originality/value – This research opens a new dimension to the study of macroeconomic variables and stock returns. Most studies carried out so far in Zimbabwe zeroed in on multiple regression as the central methodology. No study has been done using the CCA as the main methodology.

Abstract (sommario):
On the basis of quantitative and qualitative analysis of twenty two dissertations for PhD degree, we studied the methodology-related problems in scientific research. Our study included the following analyses of the empirical sources: estimating the quality of the methodology description in the introduction of dissertations; analysing the correlation between proposed methodology and tasks of the dissertations; estimating the relevance of methodology with the objectives; studying the correlation between the methods indicated in the introduction and the methods actually applied in the main text of dissertations; analysing the relevance of the research procedure; estimating the reliability of the research results. For better indication of the whole situation the outputs of our study were presented in a table. Conclusions were made on the correspondence of the analysed dissertations with the scientific criteria of objectivity, validity, rationality, systematic and methodological relevance. Based on our research, we indicated the following methodology-related problems in scientific research: insufficient description of the relevance of chosen methodology; in some cases the total lack of section with description of the applied methodology; the lack of correlation between tasks and methods; inappropriate use of methods; the lack of correlation between methods described in the introduction and those applied in the main text of the dissertations; the complete or partial absence of the description of research procedure that makes impossible to reproduce the research; the undifferentiated use of terms “method”, “reception”, and “approach”. The presence of these problems makes it difficult to meet the basic requirement for the scientific research, and the objectivity, validity, rationality, systematic and methodological relevance of such research remains questionable. In our view, a scientist who begins the research should already possess certain skills, knowledge and competencies in methodology. The development of these competences lies within the responsibility of the higher educational institutions, but should be also included in students’ and postgraduate/doctoral students’ self-education. Our work is the first empirical-based study that examined the validity and reliability of the methodology applied in scientific research in the field of social communications. It results proves that scientific research in this field need significant improvement in use of methodology.

Abstract (sommario):
Queue time (QT) between consecutive process-steps is one of the factors affecting the quality of current products in semiconductors industry. Identification of process steps with queue time sensitivity is not an easy and quick analysis, and it requires a high number of lots. An effective tool for a quick identification of sensitivity of a specific operation to a queue time was developed at Micron Israel and it is applied on production material. The algorithm calculates the average absolute delta of responses between consecutive step QTs, where a minimal value is accepted in steps with a linear correlation between the QT and the response. This calculation results in a snap-shot of the impact of QT for specific responses, or failures modes, for the entire production line, where the step with minimal value of this parameter is easily detected. This algorithm was used on production material and indeed helped to detect a new QT dependency in specific process steps. The Queue Time Sensitivity Analysis (QTSA) algorithm is a novel methodology to detect correlation of QT in a single process step to a certain electrical EOL failure. It can be easily implemented in a fabrication site by the IT team. QTSA methodology is very efficient in detecting QT related issues and it can be used both in routine mode on baseline material and during significant elevation in EOL or in-line failures.

Abstract (sommario):
In many areas of finance and of risk management it is interesting to know how to specify time-dependent correlation matrices. In this work we propose a new methodology to create valid time-dependent instantaneous correlation matrices, which we called correlation flows. In our methodology one needs only an initial correlation matrix to create these correlation flows based on isospectral flows. The tendency of the time-dependent matrices can be controlled by requirements. An application example is presented to illustrate our methodology.

AbstractThe aim of this research is to find the correlation between chemical compositions of biomass, including cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin, and kinetic rates of biomass combustion. The combustion behavior of biomass constituent was studied by thermogravimetric analyzer. The correlations were generated by means of using Response Surface Methodology based on Simplex-Lattice experimental design. The results obtained from statistical analysis can be used to generate mathematical models and also contour plots which exhibited the relationship between biomass composition and its combustion kinetic. From the observation, the models and contour plots indicated the complexity of combustion mechanism. The correlations proposed by this research were expected to be potentially used to predict combustion behavior in case of real biomass.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper aims to study the relationships between chromosomal DNA sequences of twenty species. We propose a methodology combining DNA-based word frequency histograms, correlation methods, and an MDS technique to visualize structural information underlying chromosomes (CRs) and species. Four statistical measures are tested (Minkowski, Cosine, Pearson product-moment, and Kendallτrank correlations) to analyze the information content of 421 nuclear CRs from twenty species. The proposed methodology is built on mathematical tools and allows the analysis and visualization of very large amounts of stream data, like DNA sequences, with almost no assumptions other than the predefined DNA “word length.” This methodology is able to produce comprehensible three-dimensional visualizations of CR clustering and related spatial and structural patterns. The results of the four test correlation scenarios show that the high-level information clusterings produced by the MDS tool are qualitatively similar, with small variations due to each correlation method characteristics, and that the clusterings are a consequence of the input data and not method’s artifacts.

This paper establishes limits on piping material strains for ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Level D loadings that ensure a limitation of deformation and provide suitable safety margins. In establishing the strain limits, potential piping failure modes due to compressive wrinkling and low-cycle fatigue are considered. A stress-strain correlation methodology to convert linear, elastically calculated Code Class 2 and 3 equation (9)-Level D stresses to strains is established. This correlation is based on the fatigue evaluation procedure of the Code and is verified by comparison with test results. A detailed discussion of test results compared with the stress-strain correlation methodology is also presented.

Abstract (sommario):
A novel methodology based on a combination of experimental and analytical methods is used for monitoring the stress intensity factor in fatigue cracks subjected to constant amplitude loads. Full-field displacement information is fitted, following a multi-point over-deterministic approach, to an analytical model. This is developed from Muskhelishvili’s complex formulation. The methodology allowed accurate monitoring of the stress intensity factor during three fatigue cycles when small-scale yielding conditions were achieved. Moreover for larger loads where important plastic deformation occurs around the crack tip, Dugdale’s correction accounted for the differences between theoretical and calculated stress intensity factors. Accordingly the tool provides an indirect approach for measuring crack tip plasticity. Due to the fact that image correlation is relatively simple to use and is a non-contacting technique, the approach pioneered in this work seems ideal for monitoring fatigue cracks in industrial applications.

Abstract (sommario):
The introduction of fiscal policy transparency practices in the contemporary local financial management system is one of the prerequisites for increasing the socio-economic development of regions. Creating a transparent budget environment contributes to a faster and more effective solution to the region’s current problems. The lack of a sufficient level of budgetary transparency is a consequence of poor public interest consideration, which impedes the people’s realization of their own democratic aspirations and freedoms. The article is aimed at developing scientific and methodological approach to assessing the state of social and economic development of a region and comparing the estimates with the regions’ transparency levels for 2016–2018. Integral assessment of socio-economic development consists of four stages. It has been found out that the level of socio-economic development of regions does not correlate with the transparency level of regional policy. Public finance transparency assessment of Sumy city has shown that its population needs a higher level of information disclosure, use of the latest information channels, and creation of convenient forms of involvement in the budget process. The transparency evaluation results in the areas of budgeting, public procurement, disposal of property of the territorial community, etc. have been investigated. Besides, directions for improving Sumy local authorities’ information policy are proposed to increase its transparency.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – Hybrid methods, wherefore numerical and experimental data are used to calculate a critical parameter, have been used for several years with great success in Experimental Mechanics and, in particular, in fracture mechanics. The purpose of this paper is to report on the comparison of the strain field from numerical modelling forecasts against the experimental data obtained with the digital image correlation method under Mode II loading in fatigue testing. The numerical dual boundary element method has been established in the past as a very reliable method near singular regions where stresses tend to grow abruptly. The results obtained from the strain data near the crack tip were used in Williams expansion and agree fairly well with both the numerical results and the analytical solution proposed for pure Mode II testing. Design/methodology/approach – The work presented in this note is experimental. The proposed methodology is of an hybrid experimental/numerical nature in that a numerical stress intensity factor calculation hinges upon a stress field obtained with an image method. Findings – The obtained results are an important step towards the development of a practical tool for crack behaviour prediction in fatigue dominated events. Research limitations/implications – The results also stress the necessity of improving the experimental techniques to a point where the methods can be applied in real-life solicitations outside of laboratory premises. Originality/value – Although several research teams around the globe are presently working in this field, the present research topic is original and the proposed methodology has been presented initially by the research team years ago.

Abstract (sommario):
A generalized solder joint fatigue life model for surface mount packages was previously published in [1,2]. The model is based on correlation to measured crack growth data on BGA joints during thermal cycling. It was subsequently discovered by Anderson et al. that the ANSYS™1 5.2 finite element code used in the model had an error in its method for calculating plastic work [3]. It was shown that significant error in life prediction could result by using a recent version of the code where the bug has been fixed. The error comes about since the original crack growth constants were derived based on plastic work calculations that had the bug. In this paper, crack initiation and growth constants are recalculated using ANSYS™ 5.6. In addition, several other model related issues are explored with respect to the crack growth correlations. For example, 3D slice models were compared to quarter symmetry models. Anand’s constitutive model was compared with Darveaux’s constitutive model. It was shown that the crack growth rate dependence on strain energy density always had an exponent of 1.10+/−0.15. This is in the range of the original correlation. The model was applied to several data sets of tape-based and laminate-based BGAs. The accuracy of absolute predictions is mostly within +/−2X. The accuracy of relative predictions is within +/−25%. However, the accuracy of absolute predictions could be off by a factor of 7 in the worst case, if the analyst uses a modeling procedure that is not consistent with that used for the crack growth correlation. The key to good accuracy is to maintain consistency in the modeling procedure.

Abstract (sommario):
To solve the problem of collaborative engineering changes of models distributed in heterogeneous design platforms, a “model to model” perception methodology is proposed in this paper. A self-management collaborative architecture is presented by peer to peer architecture and multiagent system. The network addresses correlation between heterogeneous platforms is built up by the perception router ontology. In the same way, the correlation between design models is described by the feature relation ontology. The design changes are encapsulated by the model modification ontology. Along with the ontology above, the design change search method is devised to catch the geometric changes; the influence search method is proposed to discover the influenced design feature and the design change adapting method is used to preserve the correlation coherence after perception. Through the work, the conventional design perception mode among designers has transformed into direct perception among models instead.

Abstract (sommario):
This article describes a methodology to characterize the failure limits by necking and fracture, and to determine the critical value of ductile damage in tube forming. The methodology makes use of digital image correlation, thickness measurements and force–displacement evolutions to obtain the strain loading paths and the strain values at the onsets of failure by necking and fracture. The onset of failure by necking is determined by a new technique that combines the strain and force–displacement evolutions whereas the fracture strains at the cracked regions of the tubes are obtained by a similar technique utilized by the authors in sheet metal forming. Transformation of the strain loading paths from principal strain space into the space of effective strain versus stress-triaxiality allows determining the critical experimental value of ductile damage at the onset of failure by necking. The methodology is applied to tube expansion with circular, elliptical and square cross-section punches and results confirm its importance and helpfulness for researchers and engineers involved in the development and optimization of industrial tube forming processes.

Abstract (sommario):
Reservoir bitumen is a highly viscous, asphaltene-rich hydrocarbon that can have important effects on reservoir performance. Discriminating between producible oil and reservoir bitumen is critical for recoverable hydrocarbon volume calculations and production planning, yet the lack of resistivity contrast between the two makes it difficult, if not impossible, to make such differentiation using conventional logs. However, the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) response in bitumen-rich zones is dominated by short transverse relaxation times ([Formula: see text]) and a low apparent fluid hydrogen index ([Formula: see text]), providing an opportunity to identify the presence of reservoir bitumen. Therefore, NMR logging technology becomes crucial in the characterization of reservoirs in which the presence of bitumen may be of concern. We used NMR and other log data to identify and quantify the occurrence of reservoir bitumen in a carbonate reservoir. A thorough petrophysical evaluation was performed using a full suite of logs, formation pressure measurements, and laboratory core analysis data. We discuss several quick methods to identify intervals with a higher chance of reservoir bitumen presence. The short transverse relaxation times ([Formula: see text]) and consequently lower [Formula: see text] logarithmic mean time values are characteristics of bitumen-rich zones. Another characteristic is low [Formula: see text] in these zones and consequently lower NMR porosity estimates when compared to porosity estimates from the density and neutron tools. We analyzed 2D longitudinal-transverse relaxation time ([Formula: see text]) maps for core samples at different depths to confirm the presence of reservoir bitumen in some wells using laboratory low-field NMR data. We observed a high [Formula: see text] ratio at various depths, which is an indication of high-molecular-weight hydrocarbons. The presence of bitumen at the same depths was confirmed by thin section analysis, and it is the likely cause for failed formation pressure testing attempts at those depth intervals. Partial cleaning of reservoir bitumen-rich core plugs results in helium-injection porosity estimates that are too low, and they are closer to the NMR porosity than to density porosity, the latter being more consistent with actual values. In addition, the grain density (GD) calculated by He injection is significantly lower than the GD estimated from elemental capture spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. Disregarding these effects complicates the core to log correlation, which is common practice for porosity calculations using the density log. A volumetric rock model was used to reconcile core and log data as well as to calculate the saturation of reservoir bitumen. The methodologies for reservoir bitumen characterization introduced here can be applied successfully in different reservoirs for more reliable and precise reservoir evaluation and production planning.
