Abstract (sommario):
African American adolescent males are at increasing risk for mental health challenges. Statistics indicate that depression and anxiety are of primary concern. Historical and social conditions, including institutionalized racism, produce stressors for Black males and propel negative public attitudes. The responses of healthcare professionals and school personnel to the mental health needs of Black adolescent males are generalized with limited focus on this specific population and effective interventions. The authors identify and describe predominant mental health conditions in Black male adolescents and describe the current landscape of emotional health impacting this population. They identify determinant factors that lead to poor mental health. Activating a social-constructivist approach, the authors recommend culturally responsive approaches to address the problem and improve outcomes, along with future directions.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter presents information for counselors who work with students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ). These students experience increased discrimination, victimization, and bullying in schools, which can lead to mental health and academic problems. The chapter provides definitions for basic terminology related to sexual and gender identity, summarizes research on the development of sexual and gender identity, and briefly addresses changing personal attitudes and public policies that affect LGBTQ individuals. It stress that counselors who work with LGBTQ students need to be thoughtful about ethical considerations, such as maintaining confidentiality, and employ an affirmative counseling approach that supports positive identity development and decreases suicide risk. Specific counseling strategies discussed include LGBTQ-affirmative counseling and LGBTQ-affirmative cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter is a critical review of the complexities of breastfeeding and its attending effects on the health of the Mother and Child. The researcher employs a historical research approach to gather both theoretical and empirical facts on this issue. It was discovered that in spite of the pragmatic and frantic efforts by different individuals, organizations, governments and non-governmental bodies in establishing a universal, healthy and safest method of breastfeeding through research, publications, workshops and so on, based on the unavoidable and uncompromising importance and benefits to maternal and child health, it is on record that the maternal behaviour is still obviously at variance to the acceptability of full breastfeeding as promulgated and declared by World Health Organization (WHO). A serious, dedicated, pragmatic and coordinated counseling approach is therefore recommended to be adopted to revive and strengthening a positive behaviour in women to foster positive attitude towards breastfeeding to guarantee 100% morbidity and mortality rate in Maternal and Child health.

Abstract (sommario):
Depression treatment that is coordinated with care for comorbid chronic conditions improves control of both the depression and the chronic medical disease. Interpersonal counseling (IPC) and briefer forms of IPT for depression have been introduced in medical practice and primary care to accommodate providers’ time constraints and different levels of training of mental health care providers. IPC is best used with patients who have low levels of depressive symptoms, or distress, and where more highly trained therapists are not available but health personnel are interested in providing counseling. There is high interest in developing briefer approaches for depression treatment in medical patients, a wealth of evidence-based choices, and much work to be done. A case example is given of a college student with comorbid depression and diabetes.
