Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of storytelling in data interpretation, decision-making and individual-level adoption of business analytics (BA). Design/methodology/approach Existing theory is extended by introducing the concept of BA data-driven storytelling and by synthesizing insights from BA, storytelling, behavioral research, linguistics, psychology and neuroscience. Using theory-building methodology, a model with propositions is introduced to demonstrate the relationship between storytelling, data interpretation quality, decision-making quality, intention to use BA and actual BA use. Findings BA data-driven storytelling is a narrative sensemaking heuristic positively influencing human behavior towards BA use. Organizations deliberately disseminating BA data-driven stories can improve the quality of individual data interpretation and decision-making, resulting in increased individual utilization of BA on a daily basis. Research limitations/implications To acquire a deeper understanding of BA data-driven storytelling in behavioral operational research (BOR), future studies should test the theoretical model of this study and focus on exploring the complexity and diversity in individual attitudes toward BA. Practical implications This study provides practical guidance for business practitioners who struggle with interpreting vast amounts of complex data, making data-driven decisions and incorporating BA into daily operations. Originality/value This cross-disciplinary study develops existing BOR, storytelling and BA literature by showing how a novel BA data-driven storytelling approach can facilitate BA adoption in organizations.

Abstract (sommario):
Academic journal articles often do not embody the rich accounts of long-term qualitative field work, while creative storytelling offers researchers an alternative way to reflect upon and communicate their findings. Digital storytelling is an emerging research methodology increasingly used to gather qualitative data but not so often to communicate results. As part of the ICT4COP research project, which investigates community policing and police-reform in post-conflict settings, we decided to try out digital storytelling to communicate some of the findings from the research. During the process, we observed that the digital storytelling methodology led researchers to approach their data differently. This article explores our adapted digital storytelling methodology. We draw similarities with ethnographic storytelling and highlight the digital storytelling methodology both as a means of dissemination, as well as an alternative approach to data interpretation for qualitative researchers.

Abstract (sommario):
With the proliferation of big data and business analytics practices, data storytelling has gained increasing importance as an effective means for communicating analytical insights to the target audience to support decision-making and improve business performance. However, there is a limited empirical understanding of the relationship between data storytelling competency, decision-making quality, and business performance. Drawing on the resource-based view (RBV), this study develops and validates the concept of data storytelling competency as a multidimensional construct consisting of data quality, story quality, storytelling tool quality, storyteller skills, and storyteller domain knowledge. It also develops a mediation model to examine the relationship between data storytelling competency and business performance, and whether this relationship is mediated by decision-making quality. Based on an empirical analysis of data collected from business analytics practitioners, the results of this study reveal that the data storytelling competency is positively linked to business performance, which is partially mediated by decision-making quality. These results provide a theoretical basis for further investigation of possible antecedents and consequences of data storytelling competency. They also offer guidance for practitioners on how to leverage data storytelling capabilities in business analytics practices to improve decision-making and business performance.

Abstract (sommario):
This exploratory study identifies journalism students’ attitudes, level of cognition and proficiency in data journalism (DJ). A survey of 121 college journalism students in Hong Kong, combined with in-depth interviews, found that: (a) while journalism students are eager to understand what is DJ and its practice, they do not have comprehensive knowledge of data collection, data analysis and interpretation; (b) computational tools are absent from current journalism curricula, which leads to students’ misperception about data usage in news reporting; (c) while students have high willingness for learning DJ, about half of those surveyed expressed a dislike of data work. Gender, year in school and major course of study play a role in the students’ varied perceptions of DJ. Male students mastered more DJ-related knowledge than their female counterparts. Those majoring in Chinese journalism show the least interest in DJ or learning its substance.

Abstract (sommario):
With slogans such as ‘Tell the stories hidden in your data’ ( www.narrativescience.com ) and ‘From data to clear, insightful content – Wordsmith automatically generates narratives on a massive scale that sound like a person crafted each one’ ( www.automatedinsights.com ), a series of companies currently market themselves on the ability to turn data into stories through Natural Language Generation (NLG) techniques. The data interpretation and knowledge production process is here automated, while at the same time hailing narrativity as a fundamental human ability of meaning-making. Reading both the marketing rhetoric and the functionality of the automated narrative services through narrative theory allows for a contextualization of the rhetoric flourishing in Big Data discourse. Building upon case material obtained from companies such as Arria NLG, Automated Insights, Narrativa, Narrative Science, and Yseop, this article argues that what might be seen as a ‘re-turn’ of narrative as a form of knowledge production that can make sense of large data sets inscribes itself in – but also rearticulates – an ongoing debate about what narrative entails. Methodological considerations are thus raised on the one hand about the insights to be gained for critical data studies by turning to literary theory, and on the other hand about how automated technologies may inform our understanding of narrative as a faculty of human meaning-making.

Abstract (sommario):
Art, music, literature, and drama are acknowledged to have a place in the embodied experience of bereavement and increasingly are also utilized for the collection and presentation of data in the social sciences and humanities. Such work tells us much about ourselves as individuals and about our relationships with others. The concept of griefwork, which acknowledges and values the collective work the bereaved do with others, is one way to frame such endeavors during bereavement. Here, we outline some of our individual, and yet connected, creative work with reference to both our own experiences of loss and our relationship with each other. Specifically, we reflect on Deborah’s development of an online community for people with commemorative tattoos and Gayle’s exploration of new ways of writing (fiction or faction). We share examples from each project and reflect on their significance to the embodied experience of bereavement.

Abstract (sommario):
Character education implementation must be integrated with various life activities. Storytelling activities can be a medium for character education, both at school and outside school. This is in line with the benefits of storytelling, namely to sharpen the imagination and thought, instill values and ethics, and improve vocabulary. This study aimed to find out the steps of storytelling as a character learning strategy. The research method used was a qualitative case study approach. The collecting data process was through interviews, discussions, observations, and literature studies. Validity and reliability tests were through the process of data triangulation and source triangulation. Consideration of choosing this method was the research data nature, which could maintain the object integrity. This means that data relating to research was comprehended as an integrated whole. Descriptive data analysis was through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and concluding. Data sources in the study amounted to 7 people, consisting of community and religious leaders (3 people), manager of the ‘Saung Budaya Tatarkarang’ community reading park (2 people), and the education office (2 people). The results showed that storytelling activities at ‘Saung Budaya Tatarkarang’ were able to build children's character at the stages of socialization and internalization. This occurred due to the implementation of storytelling activities through the stages of setting goals and theme of the story, the form of storytelling, materials and tools, the design steps of storytelling activities, and the design of storytelling activities assessment. These five steps are carried out in stages in each event.

New technologies have allowed corporations to collect, store and manage huge quantities of data, being necessary in their daily management. Hence, business intelligence and data analytics have become an important and rapidly growing area of study that reflects the impact of data-related problems to be solved in business organizations. However, it is difficult to recognized patterns and draw conclusions from large amount of data and also, understand the stories of such information. We propose a methodology based on storytelling technique in order to improve the perception and interpretation of the data with the aim to make the information more memorable for people.

Abstract (sommario):
Many research methods emphasize procedures to minimize potential bias introduced by measurement tools, environmental factors, and researchers themselves. Using the example of digital storytelling, in which short films are cocreated between a researcher and participant, we examine the possibility of cocreated stories as data in philosophical hermeneutic (PH) health research. The etymological explication of the words “data” and “story” brings the meaning of these words closer together while an exploration of the ontological and epistemological assumptions of PH indicate that cocreated digital stories can be viewed as data in a similar way to traditional verbatim interview transcripts used in other types of qualitative health research. Using digital storytelling as a data generation tool in PH health research may help provide a deeper understanding of health-related phenomena by cultivating understanding through genuine conversation, addressing the challenges of language, and apprehending the immediacy of understanding.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract While overlap represents one of the major mainstays of conversation-analytic research, the phenomenon of overlap involving backchannels in TCU-initial position has largely gone unnoticed. This study addresses this gap focusing on backchannels occurring in overlap in storytelling interaction. The investigation combines both quantitative and qualitative methods and is based on small but representative samples drawn from the audio files available for the Narrative Corpus. The primary discovery of this study is that TCU-initial backchannel overlaps typically occur at points where the storytelling’s progressivity is decelerated, either due to delays in the backchannel’s production or to the teller interrupting the telling’s linearity to insert background information, upgrade references, or slip in digressions. An alternative environment for the occurrence of TCU-initial backchannel overlap is around the story climax. Data are in British English.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In this paper, we demonstrate how the collaborative and sequential unfolding of a story ties into the constitution of a membership categorization device which we have glossed as ‘us and them’. The data come from a focus group activity where first and second generation immigrants to Denmark have been asked to discuss their situation in Denmark. Using Ethnomethodological Conversation and Membership Categorization Analysis, we present one story which involves a story-teller and his family and an elderly Danish couple living in the same block of flats. In the telling of the story, co-participants align and affiliate, and disalign and disaffiliate, at sequentially relevant junctions. We will argue that not only do such phenomena indicate listenership and possible agreement to the moral of the story in its telling, but also to the morally implicative categorical work involved in the story’s telling.

Abstract (sommario):
Extant literature on organizational storytelling assumes storytelling to be context-bound, but does not empirically detail or theorize how storytelling might differ across organizational settings. In the context of members’ everyday work lives, organizational storytelling research tends to focus on the content of stories and not on the actual telling. By addressing this omission, this paper makes three contributions. First, we offer a generic framework for analysing storytelling in situ by zooming in on the situated occurrence of storytelling through a focus on four questions: (1) What makes an event tellable? (2) What triggers its telling? (3) What form does the storytelling take? (4) What work does it do? By using ethnographic data gathered on storytelling in everyday police work, we empirically substantiate this framework. Our second contribution, then, is to show how a setting-specific approach to studying storytelling may help to flesh out a fuller, more grounded account of story life in organizations. Finally, we propose a typology of different forms of setting-specific discourse – meeting-room talk, workstation talk, canteen talk and closed-door talk – which allows researchers to further sensitize organizational research to the situated nature of organizational discourse.

Abstract (sommario):
Storytelling is a process of conveying series of events and information in words, images, and sound. Conventionally, storytelling developers/writers will apply the linear narrative structure approach to deliver the stories. However, that approach has some limitations; users cannot determine the path to end the story. They have no option to choose how to end the story based on their way of storytelling. Therefore, this study is about applying an Interactive Story Graph Structure (ISGS) approach to storytelling. ISGS approach is a structure used in storytelling in which users can revert their decision when going through the storytelling application implemented during the development. After completing the storytelling prototype development, a survey was conducted to test users’ enjoyment level when using the prototype. The survey was divided into four constructs: expectation, ease of navigation, understanding, and satisfaction. There were 36 respondents, and the data were collected on a random basis. Based on the survey’s result, most users (90.28%) enjoyed the storytelling application. The storytelling prototype was developed using Adobe Animate Creative Cloud and has been distributed among the respondents randomly. The analysis was conducted to determine the findings, limitations, and recommendations for future project improvement based on the results obtained. This study’s outcome is the complete production of storytelling application, which is creative and interactive with ISGS.

Abstract (sommario):
In this article we explore visualization for personal storytelling and investigate techniques for communicating subjective experiences in personal visual narratives. Personal stories are often subjective and storytellers omit, make up, or embellish details to craft engaging stories or to communicate a perspective. As growing personal data collections allow individuals to leverage visualizations, we explore how personal visual narratives can express subjectivity. From an analysis of personal visualizations created by data enthusiasts, designers and artists, we collect techniques for deliberately expressing subjectivity during data collection, processing, visual encoding, and presentation. Our results prompt a discussion about the role and potential of subjectivity in personal visual storytelling.
