David Matthews was born in Walthamstow, London, in 1943. He began composing – with an attempt at a full-scale symphony – at the age of 16 but, being self-taught and formally unqualified in music, went to study classics at Nottingham University (1962–65; the university awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Music in 1997). Starting in the early 1960s he was one of the musicians (along with his composer brother Colin and the composer and conductor Berthold Goldschmidt) who assisted Deryck Cooke in the preparation of what became Cooke's famous ‘Performing Version’ of the draft of Mahler's Tenth Symphony. Between 1966 and 1969 Matthews took lessons from Anthony Milner. During this period he was also working at Aldeburgh as an assistant to Benjamin Britten (1966–70); a few years later, it was to be in an improvised piano-duet version played by David and Colin Matthews that the partly paralysed Britten first heard his own Third String Quartet (1975).

I worked on Trio A alone for six months in 1965. The dance initially consisted of a five-minute sequence of movement that would eventually be presented as The Mind Is a Muscle, Part I at Judson Church (on January 10, 1966). There it was performed by me, David Gordon, and Steve Paxton simultaneously but not in unison. An interim version of an extended, but not complete, The Mind Is a Muscle (Judson Church, May 22, 1966) was performed by William Davis, David Gordon, and Steve Paxton. In the final section of this version, called “Lecture,” Peter Saul executed a balletic solo version—that is, with pirouettes and jumps. In the final version (Anderson Theater, April 11, 1968) Trio A was performed by me in tap shoes (without balletic furbelows) at the end of the evening while Paxton, Gordon, and Davis performed it as a trio at the beginning.The individual sequences last from four and a half to five minutes, depending on each performer's physical inclination. Two primary characteristics of the dance are its uninflected continuity and its imperative involving the gaze. The eyes are always averted from direct confrontation with the audience via independent movement of the head, closure of the eyes, or simple casting down of the gaze.

Of the works of David Tudor, none would seem to be better known than Rainforest IV, his large-scale performed installation of the 1970s. Although it has received widespread and well documented public performance, Rainforest's germination in the mid-1960s in elements of Bandoneon! (1966) and its evolution over a period of 10 years, from versions I (1968), II (1968–1969), III (1972) and IV (1973) through Forest Speech (1976), have not yet been adequately assessed. This paper follows Rainforest's trajectory chronologically: Matt Rogalsky focuses on the early versions of the work, and John Driscoll describes the collaborative development of Rainforest IV.

David Kasner, MD (1927–2001), used his extensive dissections of eye bank eyes and experiences in teaching cataract surgery to resident physicians to realize that excision of vitreous when present in the anterior chamber of eyes undergoing cataract surgery was preferable to prior intraoperative procedures. Noting that eyes tolerated his maneuvers, he then performed planned subtotal open-sky vitrectomies; first on a traumatized eye in 1961, then on two eyes of patients with amyloidosis (1966–1967). The success of these operations was noted by others, most particularly Robert Machemer, MD. Kasner's work directly led to further surgical developments, including closed pars plana vitrectomy.

Although the elaboration of bacteriocins by streptococci has been described previously (Brock & David, 1963; Kuttner, 1966; Kelstrup & Gibbons, 1969; Overturf & Mortimer, 1970; Kramer & Brandis, 1972), few attempts have been made to purify and characterize these bactericidal factors (Kramer & Brandis, 1972). Streptococcus sanguis (strain Challis) produces a streptocin which is lethal for Streptococcus sanguis (strain Wicky) and can be purified by ammonium sulphate fractionation and Sephadex G-100 column chromatography. We exposed sensitive strain Wicky cells to Challis streptocin and observed macromolecular synthesis and membrane permeability.

Stem bleeding of coconut caused by Thielaviopsis paradoxa (de Seynes) Von Hohnel is an important disease affecting coconut in many countries (Menon and Pandalai, 1958; Ohler, 1966, Nambiar and Sastry, 1988). lsolation of the pathogen from diseased tissues on different agar based media has given inconsistent results (Anon., 1976; Anon., 1986), None of the selective media reported for certain related fungi viz., T. basicola (Berk and Br.) Ferr. (David, 1978;Tsao and Bricker, 1966) and Ceratocystis wagnerii Goheen and Cobb (Hicks et al., 1980) proved useful for the isolation of T. paradoxa Since, standardization of an isolation method is a basic necessity for any study on plant pathogens, an attempt was made to improve upon existing methods.

Esta pesquisa intenciona investigar as contribuições de três fotógrafos norte-americanos David Zingg, George Love e Lew Parrella - para o fotojornalismo publicado na revista Realidade e de que forma seus trabalhos se diferenciam daquilo que se produzia no Brasil até o início da década de 1960. A importância da revista no período do regime militar, somada ao destaque que alguns dos fotógrafos contratados naquele momento pela Editora Abril obtiveram posteriormente em exposições de arte em museus e galerias, justificam este estudo, bem como a ausência de trabalhos sobre os três fotógrafos norte-americanos em questão. O recorte temporal desta dissertação vai desde a primeira edição da revista em abril de 1966 até a edição de dezembro de 1968 quando da homologação do Ato Institucional nº 5. Essa escolha deve-se ao fato de que ainda havia uma relativa liberdade de expressão, tanto no âmbito da fotografia quanto do texto, nesse período. Além disso, trata-se da fase de maior relevância social da publicação que em meio a ditadura militar levantou temas que confrontavam o regime. As principais fontes de pesquisa utilizadas foram os próprios exemplares da revista e a bibliografia recente produzida por ocasião do cinquentenário do Golpe de 1964. Embora a revista Realidade seja objeto de muitos estudos, o uso que fez da fotografia ainda não recebeu uma análise mais aprofundada, o que abre espaço para esta pesquisa, que se faz apoiada no cruzamento dos campos da história da fotografia e da política.
This research is intended to investigate the contributions of three American photographers - David Zingg, George Love and Lew Parrella - for the photojournalism published in Reality magazine, and in what way their jobs are different from what was produced in Brazil until the early 1960s. The importance of the magazine during the military dictatorship regime, added to highlight some of the photographers hired at the time by Editora Abril subsequently obtained in art exhibitions in museums and galleries are some of the elements that justify this study, as well as the lack of published researches focused on these three North American photographers. The time frame chosen for this dissertation is from the first issue of the magazine in April 1966 to the December 1968 edition, when the approval of the Institutional Act No. 5 is instituted in Brazil. This choice is due to the fact that during this period there was still a relative freedom of expression, both within the grafic as textual genres. In addition, it can be consdered the publication\'s biggest stage of social relevance, for during the military dictatorship it raised themes that confronted the regime. The main sources of research used were the copies of the magazine themselves and the recent bibliography on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the 1964 coup in Brazil. Although Reality magazine is already the subject of many studies, it makes room for this research, which is supported at the intersection of the fields the history of photography and politics.

Ultimement, il s’agit de certaines interactions entre les particules de mon orteil et de celles du mur, qui mènent à des interactions dans mon système nerveux, qui mènent à d’autres interactions dans mon appareil vocal, de façon à ce qu’on entende « Aïe! ». Je crois qu’il manque quelque chose d’important à cette histoire, en l’occurrence l’effet que cela fait de se cogner l’orteil : ma douleur phénoménale à l’orteil. Plus généralement, l’ontologie de la physique n’est pas suffisante pour rendre compte de la conscience phénoménale. La question est de savoir par quoi la remplacer. Dans ce mémoire, j’explore la possibilité d’une ontologie qui ne serait pas physicaliste, mais qui serait quand même naturaliste, c’est-à-dire qu’elle reposerait quand même sur les sciences naturelles. Après tout, la science n’a pas à se limiter à l’ontologie de la physique actuelle. Pour mener à bien cette exploration, je comparerai les deux possibilités qui me semblent les plus plausibles, c’est-à-dire le naturalisme transcendantal de Colin McGinn et le dualisme naturaliste de David Chalmers. McGinn affirme qu’il existe une réponse naturaliste au problème corps-esprit, mais qu’elle n’est pas cognitivement accessible à l’humain, de la même façon que la solution au problème de la gravité n’est pas accessible à l’écureuil par exemple. Chalmers croit au contraire qu’il est bien possible de répondre au problème, à condition d’introduire la conscience phénoménale dans notre ontologie comme une nouvelle entité, comme Newton l’avait fait avec la gravité. J’expliquerai qu’un compromis est en réalité possible entre McGinn et Chalmers. La position de Chalmers est menacée par des paradoxes et des problèmes qui ne seront ultimement réglés qu’en concédant beaucoup de terrain à McGinn.

L 'Art, la poésie c' est le précipité de la beauté dans l'émotion. II n’ y a jamais eu que deux émotions-moteurs : I' amour, la liberté : ainsi la Méthode rédigée en 1944 par le peintre Jacqueline Lamba pour sa première exposition à New York, pose les valeurs qui ont conduit sa vie et son oeuvre. Restituant la chronologie, notre thèse, relevant de la biographie et de l'esthétique, s'appuie sur des sources primaires et des entretiens. Avec André Breton, puis David Hare, elle épousa le surréalisme et partagea l'aventure collective menée dans les conflits sociopolitiques. Se détacher des emprises lui fut salvateur. Son retour en France, en 1951, est un commencement. La peinture claire de sa maturité s'exprime dans le paysage, dessin sur le motif l'été, « souvenirs» peints de Provence, à Paris. Sortie de l'oubli, Jacqueline Lamba apparaît aux prises avec son histoire et avec l'histoire, luttant, dans la transition du XXe siècle, pour l'accession de la femme à l'artiste.

This thesis discusses the role of the "false Messiah" in modern Yiddish Literature.
The figure of the Messiah in Jewish religious imagination signifies the prophetic yearning for redemption at the end of days, but it also provoked hopes in a strong leader who will bring about social and political redemption. Based on historical models, literature from the twelfth to the twentieth century addressed these "false Messiahs" and in the modern period used them to define and illustrate contemporary catastrophe.
Shlomo Molcho by American Yiddish poet Aaron Glanz-Leyeles and Prince Reuveni by Soviet Yiddish author David Bergelson are two twentieth century poetic historic dramas based on two messianic figures of the sixteenth century. These two modern works are compared in relation to the respective authors' life and times, political and aesthetic outlook, and dramatic powers. The comparison shows the usefulness of the "false Messiah" in dramatizing and expressing difficult contemporary issues.

Les annees soixante marquent dans le jazz un tournant radical dans l'histoire de cette musique. A travers ce demi siecle d'evolution, les principaux changements stylistiques se refleteront dans les extensions des ressources techniques des solistes et dans l'accroissement de la complexite des compositions, des arrangements et de l'improvisation. C'est en s'ouvrant sur de nouvelles cultures issues des autres continents, que les musiciens de jazz modifieront peu a peu leur langage. Les recherches harmoniques et melodiques seront egalement a l'origine des principaux changements rencontres dans le jazz de cette periode. A la fin des annees cinquante, plusieurs musiciens ont commence a etre convaincu que leur musique n'avait pas besoin d'etre confinee a l'interieure d'une structure, creant un nouveau traitement de la metrique et du rythme caracterise par la presence ou l'absence d'une pulsation reguliere. Sous l'apparition de cette nouvelle conception, les musiciens de jazz innoveront en matiere de structure sous la forme de deux tendances majeures : - la structure preparee : composition - la structure libre : improvisation. Le premier cas sera illustre par le mouvement third stream et le second par le free jazz. L'evolution du jazz au cours des annees soixante apportera des connotations extra-musicales a l'interieur des messages presents dans une composition ou une improvisation, laissant apparaitre des idees politiques, sociologiques, mais aussi exotiques ou romantiques. En seconde partie, nous presentons trois des musiciens fondamentaux de l'evolution du jazz de cette epoque,le trompettiste miles davis, le saxophoniste john coltrane et le pianiste bill evans. Leur itineraire retrace tout au long de cette periode aura pour but d'illustrer les principaux changements survenus dans le jazz des annees soixante. Cette decennie fut, comme aucune autre dans l'histoire du jazz, un courant dominant de la tradition du jazz. Chacun de ces elements musicaux que l'on pouvait rencontrer, comme la melodie, l'harmonie, la metrique, le rythme, la forme, le timbre, furent investis d'un nouveau potentiel expressif. Les annees soixante sont devenues une periode d'experimentation et d'enrichissement exemplaire pour l'histoire du jazz.

L'etude de l'industrie sur galet de la chaise, abris suard et bourgeois-delaunay, qui represente environ un tiers de l'assemblage lithique recolte, est inedite. Son objectif est de comprendre les raisons de l'utilisation de ce materiau pour la confection d'une partie de l'outillage. Grace a l'emploi d'une methodologie adaptee, la chaine operatoire menee par les hommes est reconstituee. De la mise en evidence de comportements techno-economiques differents entre les deux abris, gestion de la matiere premiere et du debitage notamment, decoule une importante discussion concernant les pratiques des hommes prehistoriques. Elle prend en compte divers facteurs susceptibles d'influencer le comportement des hommes selon les sites et les periodes. La qualite des resultats obtenus et la mise en evidence de concordances, mais aussi de divergences, selon le jeu des nombreux facteurs, engagent a poursuivre les recherches a partir de ce materiel et le travail en equipe interdisciplinaire
The study of la chaise's pebble industry, suard and bourgeois-delaunay refuges, who represent about one third of the lithic collection, is unpublished. Its objective is to understand the reasons of the use of this material for the preparation of part of the tools. Thanks to the use of an adapted method, humans' operating process is reconstituted. Different technical and economical behaviours, namely raw material and debitage management, are underlined between both refuges and lead to an important discussion about the prehistoric humans' practices. This study takes into account several factors which may had influenced humans' behaviour depending on considered sites and periods. The quality of the obtained results and the underlined similarities and divergences after computation of several factors, lead to continue researches on this material and proceed with interdisciplinary team

Abstract The worm and worm-gear tooth surfaces of existing design of Flender gear drive are in line contact at every instant and the gear drive is very sensitive to misalignment. Errors of alignment cause the shift of the bearing contact and transmission errors. The authors propose : (1) Methods for computerized simulation of meshing and contact of misaligned worm-gear drives of existing design (2) Methods of modification of geometry of worm-gear drives that enable to localize and stabilize the bearing contact and reduce the sensitivity of drives to misalignment (3) Methods for computerized simulation of meshing and contact of worm-gear drives with modified geometry The proposed approach was applied as well for the involute (David Brown) and Klingelnberg type of worm-gear drives. Numerical examples that illustrate the developed theory are provided.

As proven in the preceding pilot study the historical Viennese ground floor originally presented an intruiging and essential semi-public sphere with no clear-cut boundary between inside and out. Rather, doors and windows were left open most of the time so that there were many points that gave access to the ground-floor premises. Original photos from the period attest to this: the ground-floor facades were permeable; semi-public or even private uses of the ground floor extended to the street, and conversely, the premises were easily accessible to the “public flow.” In addition many of the ground-floor premises in the chosen research area were connected with basement floors or cellars underneath, which meant a further extension of the urban parterre. The (commercial) use of the street-facing premises in most cases also included the interior courtyard. Today, interior courtyards mostly accommodate garbage cans or dumpsters; more intensive, diversified uses of this part of the StadtParterre nowadays are rare. Thus the historical StadtParterre was a ramified, varied, much-used and hence engaging space. Permeable ground-floor facades provided a flexible interface between public and semi-public spaces; intensely interacting with one another. First and foremost, though, the point here is to acknowledge the significance of the urban parterre for the functoning of a city—a fact that has somewhat fallen into oblivion in the noughties of the 21st century ever since the emergence of 3D city modeling. The reason for this may be that conventional 3D city models canot really represent intricate, small-scale, multilayered, and ramified ground-floor structures und thus prevent us from perceiving them in a broader functional perspective.The paper discusses reasons and socio-urban effects of a dis-linked, malfunctioning urban parterre.References Anderson, S. ed. Via Gramsci, 53. 00100 Roma E-mail: roberta.gironi@gmail.com Keywords (3-5): Informal processes, dynamic transformation, new planning approach, flexible space, self-organization Conference topics and scale: Reading and regenerating the informal city Contemporary cities are affected by transformations that put in discussion the claim of control and stability to which the urban project aspires. All those gradual adjustments are manifested according to the demand, bring toward a less formal and more flexible spatial order, for which the traditional forms of the "static" city become the background of the "kinetic" landscape of informal cities. On the contrary of the formal processes of urban planning, informality process is configured as an organic development model and a flexible dynamic system opened to changes. The informal space is produced according to principles of spontaneity and self-organization. A consideration on the possibility to assume different approaches can be proposed. Those approaches should integrate in the design reasoning all the dynamics usually excluded by the discourse on the urban project, which processes can become catalysts to enrich the methods of planning and design of the urban space. Through the analysis of the case-study Previ Lima and the Living Room at the Border of St. Ysidro, the aim is to delineate in which way the contemporary architecture can absorb and metabolize these processes, triggering a different approach to a different method to intervene in the spaces of relationship among formal and informal. It is believed that the informal urban qualities cannot be eliminated and is impossible to ignore the inhabitants' practices, but rather to work on the intersection between collective and individual actions. The increasing advance of the new technologies applied in the retail market, make it common to sell products without the personal contact between seller and buyer, being the registration and payment of the products made in electronic equipment of self-checkout. The large-scale use of these devices forces the consumer to participate in the service process, which was previously done through interaction with the company's employees. The user of the self-checkout system thus performs all the steps of the purchase, from weighing the products, registering them and making the payment. This is seen as a partial employee, whose participation or performance in providing services can be used by the company to improve the quality of its operations (KELLEY, et al 1993). However this participation does not always satisfy the user, and may cause negative experiences related to usability failures. This article presents the results of the evaluation by the users of the self-checkout system. The data were collected in Portugal through a questionnaire to 400 users. The study analyzes the degree of satisfaction regarding the quality and usability of the system, the degree of motivation for its adoption, as well as the profile of the users. Analysis of the sample data reveals that users have basic or higher education and use new technologies very often. They also have a high domain of the system and an easy learning of its use. The reason for using self-checkout instead of the traditional checkout is mainly due to "queues at checkout with operator" and "at the small volume of products". In general, the sample reveals a high degree of satisfaction with the service and with quality, however, in comparative terms, self-checkout is not considered better than operator checkout. The evaluation of the interaction with the self-checkout was classified according to twenty-six attributes of the system. The analysis identifies five groups with similar characteristics, of which two have low scores. "Cancellation of registered articles", "search for articles without a bar code", "manual registration", "bagging area", "error messages", "weight sensor" and “invoice request "are seven critical attributes of the system. The results indicate that the usability analysis oriented to the self-checkout service can be determinant for the user-system interaction.
