Abstract (sommario):
Marketing information system (MIS) enables data processing and transformation of data into valuable information that results in a more effective decision-making from which companies benefit. However, human aspect is still an influential factor in the decision-making process. We conceptualize a connection between decision-making styles of employees, inherent in their habits and practices, and marketing innovation system based on the decision-making process. Through a detailed literature review, a link between spontaneous, individual, rational and dependent decision-making styles with quality and speed of MIS decision-making has been conceived and constructed. We suggest that decision-making styles influence both quality and speed of the decision-making process. Furthermore, quality and speed of MIS decision-making have a positive influence on radical and incremental marketing innovation. This study enriches the body of literature that focuses on the human-technology interaction and is valuable for companies implementing and using MIS to make business decisions.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Endodontically treated teeth may be moved, as endodontic treatment is not a contraindication for orthodontic treatment. Apical periodontal repair begins when the periapical or pulp lesion has completely resolved. This may happen immediately after treatment if the filling material causes little or no irritation of periapical tissues, and particularly if the material is fully contained within the canal. When it leaks, a foreign body granuloma forms and persists for some months or indefinitely, depending on the composition of the filling material. Materials containing calcium hydroxide with no resin components undergo phagocytosis and disappear in some months, as macrophages gradually remove them. Materials containing resins, silicone, ionomers, zinc oxide-eugenol, bioceramics or gutta-percha remain in the site and induce the formation of foreign body granulomas. Although this does not preclude tooth movement, patients should be followed up every three months using periapical images to control the position of the material in relation to the tooth apex. “Pseudo” overfilling may be avoided if permanent filling is delayed until the time when orthodontic treatment is completed.

Abstract (sommario):
Decision-making is one of the most crucial cognitive processes in daily life. An adaptable, rapid, and flexible decision requires integration between brain and body. Heart rate variability (HRV) indexes this brain–body connection and appears to be related to cognitive performance. However, its relationship with decision-making is poorly analyzed. This study investigates the relationship between HRV and the decision-making process, assessed through the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). One hundred and thirty healthy university students (mean age = 23.35 ± 2.50) participated in the study. According to IGT performance, they were divided into high decision-makers (n = 79) and low decision-makers (n = 51). Heart rate variability was measured in the resting, reactivity (i.e., during IGT), and recovery phases. Higher vagally mediated HRV (vmHRV; indexed in frequency domain measures) was evidenced in good decision-makers in the resting, reactivity, and recovery phases. During the task, a higher vagal modulation after a first evaluation was highlighted in good decision-makers. In conclusion, HRV proves to be a valid index of inhibitory circuit functioning in the prefrontal cortex. The relationship with cognitive functions was also confirmed, considering the ability to inhibit disadvantageous responses and make better decisions.

Abstract (sommario):
Collective decision making at the level of a politeia requires a collective body. The ancient Athenian concept of the ecclesia of demos was one such body as was the apella in the ancient city-state of Sparta. Qualified members of demos met at a specific place and venue to make decisions. At the level of a small polis (city-state), such gatherings were easily organized. In such cases, the power (-κρατέω -κράτος) belonged to people. If this power was exercised by the majority (πλείονας) and not by few (μὴ ἐς ὀλίγους) then this system of political organization was called (κέκληται) democracy (δημοκρατία = δῆμος + κράτος) as Thucydides so eloquently wrote in his Peloponnesian War [2.37.1] for all future generations to cherish which was his wish. Democracy can be considered as the end of a long process (voyage) of developing the art of collective decision making. It is the "Ithaca" of humanity’s expedition to discover an ideal political system. This article attempts to shed some (historical) light on this journey by looking at collective decision-making cases in Homer’s Odyssey. I was able to pinpoint ten such meetings of interest during which a sort of a collective decision was taken. Three of these meetings were held by immortals and seven by mortals. Some are described in detail while others in a few verses. All these are discussed in some detail in the different sections of the paper. Keywords: demos, democracy, Homer, Odyssey, collective decision making

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Changes in understanding and interpretation of decision-making processes have shed more light on complex interplay given the different settings, and different actors. The limitations in human decision-making and their significance and long-term implications on organizational management or policy making inspired a large body of evidence and research. Exploration of decision-making processes spans over decades, and is closely connected to the role of power; the amount of power in organizations is usually joined by the knowledge and prior experience, which together play a significant role in decision-making process, as well in selection of candidates for the job. However, there is an evident void concerning publications on decision-making processes in academic institutions, and it rapidly becomes the focus of interest due to a specific opposition contained in its core; positions of high level administrators are held by the university professors with no mandatory previous experience and/or knowledge in organisational management.

Abstract (sommario):
Humankind is facing global ecological problems and resulting from these social issues, while continually destroying the ecosystems which are the life-support mechanisms of the planet and human civilization. The socio-economic system is largely influenced by top-down decision making. Political decisions are a high leverage in sustainability issues, but contemporarily they are conducted in the reductionist way, focusing on short-term profit and jeopardizing the planet and people in the long run. The thesis explores the ways of integrating more holistic approach into political decision making. The study describes the connection between cognitive processes (e.g. learning or decision making) and somatic experiences: human decisions are considered a dynamic product of interaction between the cognition, body and environment. The theory of deep learning helps to understand how decision making can be transformed, and embodied cognitive science explains what facilitates the process of deep learning. The study develops the concept of “body-environment dialogue” — the somatic and cognitive integration of an agent and the context through which the agent receives non-verbal information processed then into the agent’s inner knowledge. The way of processing the information, unlike analytical thinking, is grounded into mindfulness and reflection. It results in the holistic insight about the global socio-ecological system and its interconnections, awakes intrinsic values and causes the change in one’s decisions and actions. Embodied experiences and connection with natural environment are considered the ways to facilitate deep learning which, in turn, affects decision making. The empirical part of the research tests the possibility to affect decision making through embodied contact with nature and the local context. The experimental study project based on 3-day outdoor experiential course demonstrates a certain change in the participants’ decision making as well as illustrates the challenges and drawbacks of such approach.

Abstract (sommario):
Dopamine has an important role in normal cognition and reward processing, both of which are impaired in disorders involving dopamine dysfunction such as addiction, schizophrenia, and Parkinson's disease. However, our understanding of the interplay between different aspects of the dopamine system and reward-guided behavior in humans is limited. Food is an important type of reward that is critical for survival and impacts the decisions we make every day. Here, we characterize the relationship between two food-reward related phenotypes and dopamine synthesis capacity (related to tonic dopamine) as well as dopamine D1 and D2 receptor availability in healthy humans. First, we examined the link between dopamine synthesis and receptor availability and body mass regulation in 117 individuals with body mass index (BMI) values ranging from normal to obese. We found that current BMI was related to a pattern of increased dopamine synthesis in the hypothalamus, a region important for homeostatic control of appetite, but decreased dopamine D2 receptor availability in the midbrain, where D2 autoreceptors regulate dopamine release throughout the brain. This suggests that increased BMI is related to a dopamine imbalance between homeostatic drivers of appetite and reward system regulatory control mechanisms that could result in an overactive, unregulated intake of food. Building on this finding, we studied the link between dopamine synthesis capacity and receptor availability and an important food-reward related behavior, foraging. Fifty-seven healthy volunteers completed a computer-based foraging task where we measured their threshold for leaving one group of rewards to search for another in four different reward environments varying from a low to high rate of reward receipt. We found that two particular patterns of dopamine synthesis and receptor availability in the anterior cingulate cortex and basal ganglia were linked to the amount that individuals changed their threshold based on the reward rate of the environment. Finally, since the prefrontal cortex is known to be important for reward-guided behavior, we implemented two methodological advancements aimed to address limitations that make it difficult to measure cortical dopamine in humans with PET imaging. The first method involves partial volume correction and surface-based smoothing in order to increase the signal to noise in the cortex. The second method is a data-driven PET data parcellation and automated reference region selection algorithm to optimize the voxels included in the reference region. In conclusion, we have characterized the dopaminergic contribution of two different foodreward guided phenotypes and have developed two techniques that will aid future research on the role of cortical dopamine. Understanding the neural mechanisms underlying these rewardguided behaviors helps us to not only understand normal behavior, but also serves as a reference for comparison when studying related pathological states.

Abstract (sommario):
Urban Bioethics
M.A.
A main challenge in medicine concerns questions of how to integrate the context and values of patient perspectives with general conceptions of illness and treatment. With medicine increasingly focused on patient-centered and individualized care, approaches to medicine must find ways to gain access to and understand the patient in such a way that recognizes her story as real while at the same time maintaining the value of medicine as an objective practice. Adding to this is the reality that under current models of medicine and decision-making in medicine, healthcare disparities persist for persons belonging to marginalized and vulnerable populations, including racial and ethnic minorities, women, and LGBTQ persons, amongst others. I argue that an approach integrative of shared decision-making built upon a phenomenological framework is a good alternative on which to try and understand questions like these and begin to address disparities in healthcare.

Abstract (sommario):
Although the health benefits of mindfulness are clearly established, the question of the cognitive mechanisms underlying these benefits remains poorly understood in neuroscience research. Among the potential mechanisms, the quality of body awareness is central. Body awareness results from the processing and integration of interoceptive and exteroceptive information at the cerebral level. Our first two experiments focus on the physiological evaluation of body awareness. The initial step was to study the Heartbeat Evoked Potential (HEP). This electro-neurophysiological signal, which reflects the integration of the cardiac signal at the cerebral level, has been proposed as a marker of the quality of interoception. Our first study focused on evaluating relationships between HEP amplitude, the quality of interoception and trait mindfulness. The results showed that HEP amplitude is unrelated to trait mindfulness, and does not account for the high interoceptive sensitivity associated with it.The second step focused on the physiological, postural signal. Specifically, we addressed the following question: Does the analysis of the postural signal, particularly in the closed eyes condition where body awareness plays a determinant role in postural control, help us to evaluate trait mindfulness? We demonstrated that numerical models are able to estimate trait mindfulness based on the characteristics of the postural signal. These models are most accurate when they are developed from data collected with eyes closed. These results confirm that the body awareness mechanism plays a part in mindfulness, and that posture provides information about the level of mindfulness.Furthermore, data reported in the literature show that the processing of body information impacts how the individual interacts with the environment. In the third experiment reported in this thesis, we evaluated the effect of the variation in vestibular information on the cognitive functions of inhibition and decision-making. We observed that the perturbation of vestibular information degrades the inhibition function, and that this degradation is a function of the relevance of vestibular information. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the processing of exteroceptive body information accelerates the decision-making process, due to a less conservative decision threshold, which degrades cognitive performance.Overall, our findings suggest that exteroceptive bodily information, relative to the position of the body in the environment, is a key element in body-brain interactions and shapes the adaptation of the individual to changes in the environment. Moreover, our findings highlight that posture is a useful biomarker when assessing body awareness, and could guide interventions aimed at improving mindfulness and body awareness

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractPhysarum polycephalum is a protist slime mould that exhibits a high degree of responsiveness to its environment through a complex network of tubes and cytoskeletal components that coordinate behavior across its unicellular, multinucleated body. Physarum has been used to study decision making, problem solving, and mechanosensation in aneural biological systems. The robust generative and repair capacities of Physarum also enable the study of whole-body regeneration within a relatively simple model system. Here we describe methods for growing, imaging, quantifying, and sampling Physarum that are adapted for investigating regeneration and repair.

AbstractRisk governance is used to refer to a body of scholarly ideas and concepts for collective decision making involving uncertain consequences of events or actions. The risk governance concept developed by the International Risk Governance Council in Geneva provides guidance for constructing comprehensive assessment and management strategies to cope with risk. Its crafters integrate three types of scientific input: classic, curiosity-driven research; strategic, goal-oriented research: and catalytic, process-related investigations. In this paper, I demonstrate how these three knowledge pools can assist risk assessors and managers to improve their understanding of complex risk situations.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This chapter discusses how regular farm walks and inspections are critical to efficient management as one farmer, Ben, clearly recognizes. One needs to know the current state of affairs to enable making the decisions appropriate for the current situation. Both farm walks and reviewing the outside world for situations that influence decisions (e.g. world markets, government/local body rules and regulations) require keen observation skills. Through being part of a group of farmers who meet to review decisions and accordingly help each other, with the support of professionals, Ben learnt a lot about the many principles of making good decisions. With practice these principles became part of his inherent thinking. This led to improved decision intuition. The core of the lessons learnt by the farmers, as concluded by the farmers, is listed in this chapter.

Abstract (sommario):
A number of studies conducted since the turn of the millennium have identified several deficits in engineering education; the most widely cited are deficits in critical analysis, systems thinking, and visualizing non-linear cause-effect chains. The field of engineering education has undergone a number of notable changes in response to such identified deficits but recent field studies such as Vision 2030 identified remaining shortfalls in engineering competencies as well as significant discrepancies in the perception of the severity of these deficits. While academic engineering programs feel that their programs adequately prepare engineering students for the practice of engineering, entry-level hiring managers disagree. In the practice of medicine, decision-making in practicing physicians is a critical competency which can make the difference between appropriate and incorrect diagnoses, and may affect the patient’s well-being or his life. Making a decision for an appropriate treatment plan in the face of insufficient or contradicting data points often times is compounded by the fact that time-scales can be significantly shorter than in the case of a machine design project. And while the majority of patients is discharged from hospital care in better health, medical professionals and educators are questioning their own approach to decision making in light of technological advances affecting their disciplines, and because of an improved understanding of the biochemistry and opportunities of genetic manipulations of the human body. Therefore, the field of medical decision making is also undergoing an overhaul in the education and training of medical students. This paper contrasts the current decision-making competencies that are imparted as part of the respective fields’ academic education, identifies the challenges in each discipline, and identifies opportunities for cross-pollination of better practices to develop decision-making competencies.

Abstract (sommario):
The importance of the aerodynamic performance, specifically meaning reducing both drag coefficient (CD) and lift coefficient (CL), is a growing issue in the modern automotive industry. The former is to improve fuel efficiency whereas the latter is to improve driving stability. These characteristics are quite associated with the geometric details of the external car body such that many studies are putting a lot of efforts to understand the contribution of geometrical details to the aerodynamic performance. For the design point of view, the comparison among local shape factors and the following trade-off study are essential during the early stage of the exterior design. In this paper, the qualitative and quantitative contribution of local shapes to overall aerodynamic performance is explored with a simplified vehicle model, especially the Ahmed body, by performing a multi-objective design optimization in a high-speed cruising condition. To achieve the goal of this research, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis is incorporated with various state-of-the-art design methodologies such as Design of Experiments (DOE), surrogate modeling, sensitivity analysis, Pareto-Optimum decision making, etc. Six design variables around the rear shapes of the Ahmed body are parameterized and populated into design space via a hybrid DOE method combining Central Composite Design (CCD) and Latin Hypercube. For CD and CL, corresponding Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are created for the surrogate model. Then, the individual and collaborative contributions of design variables are scrutinized. For further detailed analysis, a Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) is performed so that the empirical joint probability distribution is calculated to explore the feasible and optimum design space. Based on the simulation and analysis results, Pareto frontier is identified and multi-objective optimization is conducted to seek the best appropriate vehicle shapes for different design goals between CD and CL, which weigh on fuel efficiency and driving stability, respectively.

Abstract (sommario):
This research project was a collaboration of several research organizations, product manufacturers and fire service representatives to examine hazards associated with residential flooring systems to improve firefighter safety. Funding for this project was provided through the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Grant Program. The main objective of this study was to improve firefighter safety by increasing the level of knowledge on the response of residential flooring systems to fire. Several types (or series) of experiments were conducted and analyzed to expand the body of knowledge on the impact of fire on residential flooring systems. The results of the study have been prepared to provide tactical considerations for the fire service to enable improved decision making on the fire scene. Experiments were conducted to examine several types of floor joists including, dimensional lumber, engineered I-joists, metal plate connected wood trusses, steel C-joists, castellated I-joists and hybrid trusses. Experiments were performed at multiple scales to examine single floor system joists in a laboratory up through a full floor system in an acquired structure. Applied load, ventilation, fuel load, span and protection methods were altered to provide important information about the impact of these variables to structural stability and firefighter safety. There are several tactical considerations that result from this research that firefighters can use immediately to improve their understanding, safety and decision making when sizing up a fire in a one or two family home. This report summarizes the results from each of the experimental series and provides discussion and conclusions of the results.
