Platt, Kelsey Elyse. "Developing metacognitive and self-regulated learning skills through reflective writing prompts". Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/3164.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Effective practice determines the quality of a performance and it is essential to improving a musician's overall level of playing. Studies show that experts in the field of music display superior metacognitive skills, or the ability to think about one's thinking. Metacognition is an important skill that needs to be developed in order for a student to become a self-regulated, or independent learner. Effective practice can be improved by learning and developing metacognitive and self-regulated learning skills. An important component of self-regulated learning is reflective thinking. Reflective thinking is a mental process that contributes to deeper learning experiences, improves problem solving skills, and enhances creativity. Reflective thinking can be stimulated with writing activities. Research and theories of reflective practices informed the creation of the Reflective Writing Prompts. The Reflective Writing Prompts stimulate reflective thinking as they teach and develop metacognitive and self-regulated learning skills to make practice more effective. Each exercise prompts the student to think and write a response to questions focused on a specific skill. These prompts are based on research in music psychology and reflective thinking, with special focus on metacognition, self-regulated learning, practice habits, and reflective journaling. The pertinent studies and theories in these areas will be examined and explained in relation to each other. With this foundational knowledge in place, the Reflective Writing Prompts will be presented. The prompts are designed to support first or second year music students in their development as independent learners who practice effectively.

Villanueva, Borbolla Montserrat. "Understanding nurse practitioner-patient communication : reconceptualizing power and relationships through music metaphor". Thesis, Lethbridge, Alta. : University of Lethbridge, Faculty of Health Sciences, c2012, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10133/3247.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In nursing literature, power is conceptualized as an object transferred, distributed, controlled or conquered by empowerment. In this management care paradigm, the service of care provides power to achieve the product of health. The socio-philosophical framework proposes power as intra-interpersonal set of relationships. Interdisciplinary collaboration allowed discovering power-and-relationships as inseparable mind-body subunits constituting micro and macro health interactions, through a mixed methods instrumental case study. Control and power mechanisms were revealed analyzing body movements and conversations in Case A-15min- and Case B-16.10min- nurse practitioner-patient videotaped encounters. Catalyzed by a hermeneutical music metaphor this thesis proposes relational healing care. Despite interruptions and disruptive postures, nurse practitioners-patients reverse differentials by sharing potentials in simultaneous connections. Power balance is developed by equitable-inequitable communication. Like diverse related tones, nurse practitioner-patient is an Intermelody solving tension continuum in concordance. Health struggles in that way are nothing to be fixed, but healing cycles to be played.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
One of the principal purposes of Q’eros music is to actively regenerate and re-create good relationships with the cosmos and the spirit world they believe in. In this paper, I explore how both the Q’eros’ indigenous songs as well as their newly-adopted music and dance for Peru’s largest pilgrimage, Qoyllurit’i, achieve efficacy of purpose through similar techniques of sound production and aesthetics. Even though the specific musical traits (structure, scale, and instrumentation) of both musical styles are significantly different, I address how Q’eros’ musical production of both types share the same focus and serve the same end-goals, whether the ritual is an intimate one within the community or shared with thousands of other people from the greater region. In addition, the performance of both styles of music serve as specific identity markers for the Q’eros depending on their contextual use and the identity desired at the time. In other words, the Q’eros’ musical choices allow them to shift identities between traditional Q’eros in their home community and misti (mestizo) in Qoyllurit’i.

Veit, Andrew Gregory. "Developing a curriculum for the study of jazz vibraphone available through the online community, the vibesworkshop.com". Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/3208.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The vibraphone has been associated with improvisation since the beginning of the twentieth century. There have been many documents designed to guide students in both technical studies on the vibraphone and improvisational skills. This document includes three instructional courses dedicated to the teaching of those skills. It uses only materials found on the website vibesworkshop.com, which is curated by Philadelphia-based vibist Tony Miceli. These courses are designed for undergraduate college students through advanced amateurs or professionals. Many college curricula include insufficient vibraphone studies or do not include them at all. Currently, most college percussion studio professors specialize in areas other than vibraphone. Because of their lack of experience, professors supplement their teaching methods with materials that approach vibraphone in a subpar manner. Such materials instruct students to internalize and regurgitate bland materials instead of creating and developing their own ideas. The vibesworkshop.com courses aim to assist those professors and students by replacing older instructional materials with a system that cultivates students' affinity with the vibraphone, allowing them to continue contributing to the online vibes community after participation in these courses.

Horseman, Samantha Marie. "Dynamic relationships between the sonic artist, the sonic artwork and its audience : an investigation through theoretically informed creative practice". Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2012. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/18077/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The following portfolio of sonic artworks and accompanying commentary comprises creative and theoretical research undertaken between 2008 and 2012. Alongside a portfolio and commentary of sonic artworks, it will also feature an exposition of the theoretical concepts that have propelled and informed their creation. At the centre of the research is the development of an integrated theoretical and creative practice in sonic art. I will discuss the context that has led me, as a creative practitioner, to question the nature of the dynamic relationships that potentially operate between both sonic and physical media and the perceptive occupant that inhabits the artwork. The concept of a tri-polar dynamic forms the theoretical crux of this project. It outlines the potential for the perceptive occupant to play a completing role within the portfolio of sonic artworks: a kinetic activation of dormant syncretic potential held within the artistic materials. Influenced by the philosophical models of Nattiez, Kramer, Merleau-Ponty, Delueze and Guattari, the works also explore satellite topics of temporality, the internal monologue and phenomenology. The commentary outlines the creative processes involved in the development of the artworks focussing in particular on how they embody and activate aspects of the tri-polar dynamic. The overarching aim of the research is the development of an integrated approach of both a theoretical and creative exploration of a selfreferential theme: the dynamic relationships between myself as the sonic artist, the creative media with which I work and the perceptive occupant.

Nevins, Paul Leonard. "Trumpet in transition : a history of the trumpet and its players in the United Kingdom through the music and relationships of Sir Edward Elgar". Thesis, Birmingham City University, 2018. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.753299.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The life and career of Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) coincided with a period of significant change in the development of the trumpet and the music scored for it. A professional musician from the provinces, mostly self-taught, Elgar slowly gained recognition and ultimately international fame. In the United Kingdom for most of the nineteenth century the pre-eminence of the slide trumpet, which was not a fully chromatic instrument, made for a unique situation, leaving the ubiquitous cornet to fill the gap when a fully chromatic instrument was required. The valved trumpet, at first in the form of the large F trumpet, only gained a foothold in the last decades of the nineteenth century. This thesis examines the development in the trumpet and cornet scoring of Elgar throughout his career and correlates this with the trumpeters he worked with both in the provinces and in London. This is set in the context of the instruments that were available to, and promoted by, these trumpeters. The analysis leads to an original theory of Elgar being both a reflector and a driver of change in the turbulent world of the trumpet. A review of the trumpet writing of composers contemporary with Elgar from the United Kingdom corroborates this theory. The playing styles of Elgar’s trumpeters are investigated, and the sonic and playing qualities of the instruments explored. These qualities are related to the advocacies of the leading trumpeters and commentators of the time, and are illustrated on the accompanying CD which contains contemporary exercises and excerpts performed by the author on historic instruments with original, or copies of, contemporary mouthpieces. This study, relating the music, circumstances of composition, performers involved and the instruments available presents significant new knowledge of the trumpet world in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The conclusions challenge certain anecdotes that have been passed from generation to generation concerning trumpeters of Elgar’s generation. I draw attention to evidence suggesting a hitherto little-researched continental influence.

Wang, Tzu-ya (Lisa). "Action research : improving my music therapy practice with hospitalised adolescents through building relationships and meeting their developmental needs : a thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music Therapy". New Zealand School of Music, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10179/1115.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study examines the researcher's music therapy intervention with hospitalised adolescents within a paediatric hospital The hospital is located in a New Zealand city serving a broad multicultural population of mainly Pakeha, Maori and Pacific Island people. There is a large body of literature showing that experiences of hospitalisation are often unpleasant and that the challenges adolescents encounter during hospitalisation can also be detrimental to their development. The researcher employed an action research model of cycles of planning, action and reflection to explore the potential for practice improvement in meeting the needs of hospitalised adolescents. In addition, young people's feedback on the sessions and input from supervisors also contributed to the researcher's planning. Personal goals in clinical practice and specific planning for the needs of individual participants were the starting points of each cycle. Subsequently, each cycle had a learning analysis to relate planning to action and to collect the knowledge for the next cycle or future practice. The researcher found that through scrutiny of her clinical work she was able to improve her professional practice. The findings also showed that relationship-building through music therapy was able to support the developmental needs of hospitalised adolescents.

Tiran, Ilse. "Musicking through transition : first-year international students' experiences of creative improvisation in group music therapy sessions". Diss., 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/29254.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This qualitative study explores the experiences of creative improvisation in music therapy sessions of a group of 12 first-year international students. The students took part in a group music therapy process which consisted of eight sessions. Music therapy is explored as a possible approach for offering first-year international students valuable social, emotional and psychological support in light of literature findings that note the continuous struggles faced by international students in their transition to university. Data collection was in the form of a focus group interview, which was conducted after the final session, and two video excerpts from different sessions within the process. I drew on these data sources to explore how music is used as a medium for expressing and sharing first-year experiences, and how the group music therapy sessions afford students opportunities for the development of mutually supportive relationships. Data were coded, then categorised and in this process, themes emerged. The emergent themes suggest that creative improvisation in group music therapy sessions facilitates moving from disconnection to building more friendships and deeper relationships; creates a platform for increasing openness towards exploring, expressing and sharing experiences and emotions concerning being a first-year international student; and how music as an alternative medium to verbal and/or other expression for expressing and interacting, allows for this expression of emotions and experiences, and connection in the group. The findings indicate that it was in expressing and sharing their experiences with one another through musicking that students were able to develop mutually supportive relationships. Copyright

Richardson, Kaitlin. "Developing boundary-spanning relationships : learning through success stories". 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10170/439.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This research addresses the following questions: how do successful professionals cultivate boundary-spanning relationships to develop professional goods; and what lessons can be drawn from their successes? This study uses grounded theory to interpret qualitative interview data from four expert networkers to help demonstrate how successful people in various industries build relationships — and what characteristics these successful networkers have in common. Using grounded theory, five key themes emerged: uncertainty reduction, ingratiation, reciprocity, mentoring relationships and the importance of follow-up. The study of networks has a well-developed body of surrounding literature; however, the current research does little to address how individual actors successfully build the relationships upon which networks are based. Therefore, this qualitative research into the characteristics shared by successful networkers is a positive contribution to the body of knowledge concerning social network theory — and will serve as a guide for those wishing to expand their personal and business networks.

"The Voice Somatics Integration Lab: Developing Kinesthetic Connections Through Voice and Movement". Doctoral diss., 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.63063.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
abstract: Derived from the Greek word soma, meaning body, somatics is a field of movement methodologies designed to promote a greater sense of physical self-awareness through kinesthetic learning. Gaga Movement Language and Bartenieff Fundamentals, two methodologies based on somatic principles, offer unique processes to develop an individual’s movement vocabulary. By synthesizing Gaga Movement Language and Bartenieff Fundamentals with vocal pedagogy and vocal repertoire, singers can develop a kinesthetic awareness of their vocal technique that informs their artistic expression, movement vocabulary, and performance ability. This paper presents a model for a Voice Somatics Integration Lab (VSI Lab), geared toward voice performance majors and designed to bridge the gap between Gaga Movement Language, Bartenieff Fundamentals, and vocal pedagogy. The course will culminate in a performance of a song or aria that students have selected, staged, and choreographed in accordance with the lab curriculum, along with a brief three-to-five-minute presentation detailing their choreographic process. Complete with a detailed syllabus and lesson plans, the course will use movement philosophies and techniques to guide each student in developing their pieces. Ultimately, the VSI Lab will assist singers in more effectively blending the physical demands of staging and choreography with their singing technique and artistry.

Clements-Cortés, Amy. "Episodes of Relationship Completion Through Song in Palliative Care". Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/17744.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study utilized a combination of intrinsic and instrumental case studies to describe the experience of four dying persons and their significant relations, as they engaged in music therapy sessions designed with the goal of facilitating relationship completion. The four primary participants were inpatients of the Baycrest palliative care program who were diagnosed with a terminal illness and a life expectancy of less than six months. Two spouses who were involved in music therapy sessions were co-participants. I developed four case studies to represent each of the rich and detailed stories. Through the use of narrative research methods I was able to describe, interpret, and understand the complexity held within the multiple data sources that informed each case study. Data sources included: music created, utilized, recorded, and/or discussed in music therapy sessions; discussions during music therapy sessions; the researcher’s field notes; formal notes placed in the participant’s medical charts; the formal written assessment; transcriptions of audio-taped music therapy sessions; interviews; interview transcriptions; artistic pieces crafted by myself that emerged from the experiences of the participants as reflected in their interviews, and weekly participation in sessions which were verified by the participants; and other artistic material. The rich knowledge that emerged from the individual case studies informed a cross-case analysis where global themes were identified from a thematic analysis of participants’ experiences; and process motifs arising from the progression of participant engagement in music therapy are described. Global themes included: love; loss; gratitude; growth/transformation; courage/strength; and goodbye. The five process motifs that emerged were: (1) music therapy helps and was valued as a means of sharing the participants’ perceptions of their situation. (2) music therapy provides a safe place to become aware of, explore, and express feelings. (3) music enhances communication. (4) music therapy techniques provide creative avenues for self-expression. (5) music therapy provided a vehicle for revisiting and reminiscing. The thesis concludes with a summary of the knowledge revealed and a discussion of implications for music therapists and health care professionals, as well as a presentation of final thoughts and reflections on my role as researcher in this study.

Two of the greatest problems that the world is facing today are climate change around the world and environmental pollution, increasing with each and every passing year and causing irreparable damage to the earth. A concern for the environment from people gives rise to new economic opportunities and green industries. Green tourism (nature tourism, low impact tourism, ecotourism, bio-tourism, or ecologically responsible tourism), as one of green industries, typically involves travel to places where flora and cultural heritage are the primary attractions and focuses on socially responsible travel and sustainability. Taiwan nurtures a wide array of ecological resources and is suitable for the development of green tourism. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to investigate the development of green tourism in Taiwan with a focus on the relationships among service innovation, service quality, customer satisfaction, and business performance. A total of 154 usable samples were collected in this study. The results of the study indicated that a positive relationship was found between some parts of service innovation and customer satisfaction and between some parts of service quality and customer satisfaction. Further, a positive relationship was also found between customer satisfaction and business performance and between service innovation and business performance. Some parts of service quality are also positively related to business performance. Finally, no moderate effects of customer satisfaction on other variables were found.

Human, Werner J. "Three men's experience of their journey to and through divorce: the unheard songs". Diss., 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1196.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The psychological effects on, and the experience of divorce by women and children are widely researched. However little data is available on how divorce affects men and how they experience a marriage break-up. This study aims to explore and describe the `voices' (experiences) of divorce from three men's perspectives. The randomly selected sample for this study consisted of three participants'. Data was collected in the form of the participants own written testimonials. Out of the written testimonials themes were identified and explored by the researcher. This was done from an ecosystemic epistemological stance within the post-modern paradigm, with the symbolic use of music / popular songs to further `enhance' the exploration and description of the research participants' experiences of divorce. A qualitative methodological design was followed, allowing `unique' and personal `meaning' and experience to emerge. This study's results were presented in the form of `integrative' and descriptive text. Overall the study explicated unique descriptions of men's experiences of divorce with the creative application of music to enhance descriptions and experiences.
