Abstract (sommario):
The goal of Synthetic Biology is to engineer systems from biological parts. One class of systems are those whose purpose is to process information. My work seeks to build transcription-based devices for use in combinational digital logic. Preliminary characterization experiments show that existing devices fall short of desired device behavior. I propose to develop a novel implementation of transcription-based logic by designing synthetic transcription factors from well-characterized DNA binding and dimerization domains. Initial modeling work serves to inform design of these devices.

Abstract (sommario):
This research is in the field of document security and the investigation of existing security devices. Security documents can be of two types; those that have commercial value, namely currency, articles of value and those that have legal value, namely, passports, identification cards etc. It is of vital importance in today's world, where fraud and counterfeiting are the order of the day, to protect any article or document of aesthetic importance and value. After the tragic events of September 11th 2001, security and the lack of security in every sense of the word is a much talked and researched subject. The literature review in Chapter Two will reveal that there are many security devices being currently used for various applications and each of them has many advantages and disadvantages. Devices such as magnetic cards, chip cards, biometric technology, optically variable devices, holograms and kinegrams and others have been described and their uses explained. Chapter Three is a continuation of literature review on Digital Watermarking and the available Digimarc technologies and applications in the field of security. Digimarc Corporation, based in Tualatin, Oregon, United States has been the pioneer in the field of Digital Watermarking. Microbar Security Limited, a subsidiary company of Durand Technology Limited, based at the Shrivenam 100 Business Park, Shrivenam, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom has developed its own watermarking technique, which has many advantages in comparison to the Digimarc Technology has also been described here.In Chapter Four, an optical variable device, namely, the Lippmann Optical Variable Device, named after the nineteenth century scientist Gabriel Lippmann (1845-1921), has been studied in thorough detail. Much work has been done to prove it and to understand the principle behind the theory he proposed. Currently, this type of technique based on interferential photography can be applied as a unique security device on passports, identification cards etc. The principles and theory of Lippmann photography has been explained in considerable detail. Experimental work done using various methods and using different photographic materials has also been described along with the results obtained. The application that has been emphasized here, is for passports for which this research was conducted in collaboration with Holographic Dimensions, Florida. Chapter Five, explains the principle of Covert Bar Coding which is the basis of the Microbar Watermarking Technique. Experimental results have been presented, these have been obtained using the MATLAB software. Finally, Chapter Six gives some ideas that can be pursued for future work. This work has produced two papers on Lippmann Photography and the mathematical evaluation of the emulsion co-authored by the author of the thesis. Abstracts from the papers have been used in this thesis. Also, it has produced two patents, one by `Holographic Dimensions', Florida on the Lippmann Photography and second, `Microbar Security Limited' on the `Covert Bar Coding Technique'.

Abstract (sommario):
The Internet of Things (IoT) has evolved to be an important part of modern society. IoT devices can be found in several environments such as smart homes, transportation, the health sector, smart cities and even facilitates automation in organisations. The increasing dependence on IoT devices increases the possibility of security incidents in the physical or cyber environment. Traditional methods of digital forensic (DF) investigations are not always applicable to IoT devices due to their limited data processing resources. A possible solution for conducting forensic investigations on IoT devices is to utilise a proactive approach known as digital forensic readiness (DFR). This dissertation firstly aims to conduct a thorough review of the available literature in the current body of knowledge to identify a clear process that can be followed to implement DFR tailored for IoT devices. This dissertation then formulates requirements for DFR in IoT based on existing forensic techniques. The requirements for DFR in IoT give rise to the development of a model for DFR in IoT, which is then implemented in a prototype for IoT devices. The prototype is subsequently tested and evaluated on IoT devices that conduct proactive DFR in a simulation of a smart home system. Finally, the dissertation illustrates the feasibility of the DFR processes for IoT and serves as a basis for future research with regards to DFR in IoT. This dissertation will impact future research with regards to developing a standard for DFR in IoT.

Abstract (sommario):

Wearable computers are becoming a widespread reality. Driven by a quest for sensorial ultrability (ultra-ability) and control of our environment and bodies, we search for ever more intimate solutions to increase our innate physical capacities using technology. Finger-wearable devices for augmentation are nowadays part of the mainstream wearable fashion and research agenda, because of their uniquely convenient placement on the human body and proximity to the most expressive of limbs - the fingers. This thesis proposes a consideration of finger augmenting devices as a new class of instruments, rather than an opportunistic approach for positioning sensors and actuators. Out of a comprehensive survey of the work on finger augmentation, I put forward a definition for finger augmentation, a classification framework, and design guidelines for creating new finger-worn devices. I present four designs of finger-augmenters, their technical underpinnings, evaluation methods and theoretical contributions. Assistance is ubiquitous throughout the spectrum of technological benefit, advancing those with specific needs for recovery or rehabilitation, as well as those looking to go beyond human ability. This cross-cutting design principle for human-computer interfaces is uncontested yet underutilized. This thesis conceptualizes the Assistive Augmentation spectrum as a metaphor for the flexible interpretability of technology to simultaneously help many communities. The concrete prototypes I hereby present: EyeRing, FingerReader, Mobile-FingerReader and MusicReader, exemplify this idea and suggest an inclusive path of technology development.

Abstract (sommario):
U.S. advertisers spent over $2 billion on sporting events in 2014 directing advertisements towards consumers through digital devices used such as televisions, computers, smartphones, and tablets. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to identify motivation factors that predict the intention to view sports content on digital devices. Knowing such factors is important for advertisers to prioritize distribution channels. Uses and gratification theory formed the theoretical framework for the study. The methodology adapted a survey that encapsulated 9 motives. The research questions examined what motives influenced sports viewership, what motives predicted the intention to view specific sports content, and the differences in viewing intention across sports content types. Data were collected through a survey administered to a qualified random sample of U.S. respondents with 525 responses received. Data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis to group the questions into motivation factors, multiple linear regression to determine the significance of these factors in predicting viewership intent, and nonparametric Friedman testing to determine what demographics influenced viewership. Findings included: (a) 8 factors explained 76% of the variance; (b) 8 motives were significant in predicting viewership intention, with Escape (β = .714) ranking the highest; and (c) younger viewers had a greater intent to consume content on digital devices other than television, with smartphones (M = .73) ranking the highest. Social change benefits include: (a) sports content providers and advertisers could target the right content and advertisement to maximize viewership retention and revenue, and (b) users could view their desired sports content on their chosen device.

Abstract (sommario):

Digital literacy is fast becoming a necessary skill for mediating life in the 21st century. Digital technologies, digital media, and digital devices have become ubiquitous and intrinsic in modern society and using one to interact with the others requires specific skills—digital literacies—be learned. The purpose of this research was to understand the extent to which Baby Boomers are digitally literate, the digital devices they understand and use, and the purposes for which they are using them.

Residents living in a specific group of age-restricted communities comprised of people 55 years of age and older were e-mailed requests to participate in an online survey. More than 8,200 homes received the invitations and 659 people agreed to participate. The survey consisted of 17 three-part, forced-choice questions and five demographic identifiers. To analyze the data, the researcher used SPSS and ran chi-square tests on each response comparing Older Boomers to Younger Boomers regarding specific digital activities in which they engaged, the device(s) they used, and the frequencies with which they engaged in those activities.

The results of this study indicate that the Baby Boomers in the study possess basic functional digital literacies. They use the Internet daily to read news, check weather, and look up recipes, directions, and medical information. While participation in the various activities was fairly even between both Boomer groups, Younger Boomers tend to send and receive text messages, bank online, pay bills online, search for recipes, save online bookmarks, visit social networks, read blogs, and take online classes more than Older Boomers. The majority of respondents were women, college educated, with annual household incomes of $75,000.00 or more. The most popular digital devices used were laptops, desktops, tablets, and smartphones, respectively and respondents averaged using three different digital devices while engaging in their digital activities. The trend is toward decreasing use of desktop and laptop computers and a corresponding increase in the use of tablets and smartphones.

Abstract (sommario):
The scaling of MOS transistor has been the main manufacturing strategy for improving integrated circuit (IC) performance. However, as the device dimensions shrink, the scaling becomes harder to be achieved. In this context, much effort has been done in order to develop alternative devices that may allow further progress in computation capability. Among the promising emerging technologies is the multiple independent-gate field effect transistors (MIGFETs). MIGFETs are switch-based devices, which allow more logic capability in a single device. In general, switch networks built through MIGFET devices tend to be more compact than the traditional switch networks. However, there is a tradeoff between the number of logic switches merged and the area and performance of a given MIGFET. Thus, we aim to explore such a tradeoff in order to evaluate the MIGFET impacts in the building digital integrated circuits. To achieve this goal, in this work, we present an area and performance evaluation based on digital circuit built using MIGFET devices, where each MIGFET is represented through RC modelling. In particular, such an evaluation is applied on full-custom design of binary adder circuits and on standard-cell design flow targeting in a set of benchmark circuits. Through the experiments, it is possible have an insight, even superficial and pessimist, about how big can be the layout of a given MIGFET than the single-gate FinFET and still show a reduction in the final circuit area due to the logic compaction.

Abstract (sommario):
While electronics has prospered inexorably for several decades, its leading source of progress will stop in the next coming years, due to the fundamental technological limits of transistors. Nevertheless, microelectronics is currently offering a major breakthrough: in recent years, memory technologies have undergone incredible progress, opening the way for multiple research venues in embedded systems. Additionally, a major feature for future years will be the ability to integrate different technologies on the same chip. new emerging memory devices that can be embedded in the core of the CMOS, such as Resistive Random Access Memory (RRAM) or Spin Torque Magnetic Tunnel Junction (STMRAM) based on naturally intelligent inmemory-computing architecture. Three braininspired algorithms are carefully examined: Bayesian reasoning binarized neural networks, and an approach that further exploits the intrinsic behavior of components, population coding of neurons. Each of these approaches explores different aspects of in-memory computing

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The principle of operation dictates that the output of a cycloconverter contains some harmonics. For drive applications, the harmonics at best increase losses in the motor and may well cause instability. Various methods of analysing the output waveform have been considered. A Fortran 77 program employing a modified Fourier series, making use of the fact that the input waveforms are sinusoidal, was used to compute the individual harmonic amplitudes. A six pulse three phase to single phase cycloconverter was built and a Z-80 microprocessor was used for the control of firing angles. Phase locked loops were used for timing, and their effect upon the output with changing input frequency and voltage were established. The experimental waveforms are analysed by a FFT spectrum analyser. The flexibility of the control circuit enables the following investigations not easily carry out using traditional analog control circuit. The phase relationship between the cosine timing and reference wave in the cosinusoidal control method was shown to affect the output waveform and hence the harmonic content. There is no clear optimum value of phase and the T.H.D. up to 500Hz remains virtually constant. However, the changes of individual harmonic amplitudes is quite significant. In practice it may not be possible to keep the value of phase constant but it should be considered when comparing control strategies. Another investigation involves the changing of the last firing angle in a half cycle. It shows that the value of firing angles produced by the cosinusoidal control method is desirable. Operation at theoretical maximum output frequency was also demonstrated.

Abstract (sommario):
The biomedical devices often operate only with a battery, e.g., blood glucose monitor, pacemaker. Therefore, it is desirable to fully utilize the energy without sacrificing the performance of the system. The Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), as a key component of most of the biomedical devices, needs to be designed for minimum power consumption by exploring various techniques from system level to circuit level. In addition, the nature of bio-signal provides more alternatives to reduce the power. In this thesis work, an 8 bit 11 kS/s modified algorithmic analog-to-digital converter for biomedical applications is proposed. All analog components are designed at circuit level using a 90 nm CMOS technology and digital components are implemented using Verilog-A language in Cadence. The ADC is operating in current mode at sub-threshold region with only 0.5 V supply voltage with an input current from 0 nA to 512 nA. The ADC is designed based on a top-down design with bottom-up verification approach. The system level model is described using top level language and then the circuit level is created and verified using Cadence tools according to the system level model. The INL and DNL obtained from simulation is -1/+0.8 LSB and -0.9/+1 LSB respectively. The SNDR is 47 dB (7.5 ENOB) for a -0.2 dBFS at 1 kHz sinusoidal signal. The power consumption is 2.83 μW without biasing and 4μW with biasing.

Dumas, Kuchling Janine. "1:1 Digital devices and preparatory school teachers’ classroom practices". Diss., University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/80435.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In this study, the influence of a 1:1 digital device on South African preparatory school teachers’ perceptions regarding their classroom practices is described. The focus is on the Chromebook as an ‘artifact’ of learning. Digital technology is becoming prevalent in all education spheres and, subsequently, interest in this topic is growing. In order to create an environment where optimal learning takes place, teachers and pupils should adapt their learning and teaching methods to embrace the effects of technology. Teachers are at the forefront of education and education trends involving digital devices are becoming a reality across all grades. Qualitative research was conducted to gain insight into eight teachers’ perceptions on using a 1:1 digital device (the Chromebook) for teaching and learning in a private Gauteng school. The major findings were that teachers had to adapt their preparation, facilitation and assessment strategies to accommodate the use of the Chromebook in the classroom. This was mostly done successfully by the participants. The teachers realised that the Chromebook is a useful learning and teaching artifact or learning and teaching support material as a tool in the classroom. It enhances multimodal learning, encourages the inclusion of multiliteracies, and creates a third space of learning, where teachers and pupils cooperate in constructing new knowledge. A concern addressed by the teachers was that digital learning would have a negative impact on writing skills. They also stated that there should be a balance between technology and traditional teaching methods. The most important recommendations are that teachers should change their attitude and their preparation and implementation of lessons when using the digital device in the classroom. Teachers should realise that pupils whose parents have the financial means and who have access to trending technology, today’s digital natives, have instant access to information and this has changed the way learning takes place. Although new to some teachers, the use of digital devices is second nature for many pupils of the 21st century. Teachers should embrace opportunities for professional development so that the digital device can be effectively incorporated in the learning process in the classroom.

Television has always had a relevant place in the Brazilian everyday life, and new possibilities of consumption may influence the way viewers relate with television content. The influence of television on the Brazilian everyday life and the spreading of mobile telephony among the lower income classes have established favorable conditions for the introduction and later adoption of portable TV for mobile phones, which was made possible by the introduction of digital TV technology in Brazil. The theory of learning by analogy was used as theoretical basis to analyze the process of absorbing this technology, which, although new from a delivery point of view, is already well known and considered by Brazilians, as we can see when we consider its large stand in popular preference. The contextualizing of the introduction conditions is thus tied to the understanding of the dimensions, characteristics and meanings obtained by TV in everyday life. The option for lower classes as an object of study stems from the fact those classes represent the larger consumption of television programs. The results of the exploratory research shows a great interest in watch TV anywhere, even outside home. This may indicate new commercial opportunities based that new form of media consumption. It also indicates that the weight of TV in everyday life may be significant towards the intention of adopting the portable TV as an alternative to TV content consumption in public places.

The technology of cognitive radio has been researched for more efficient use of spectrum, since it allows the use of under-utilized frequency bands. Cognitive radio devices operating in the digital TV frequency band are known as White Space Devices (WSD) and use free channels under the condition of not causing interference above the limit set by the regulator. The UK regulatory authority, Office of Communication (Ofcom), published in February 2015, the first European regulation allowing WSD systems in the digital TV band through the support of geo-database systems. The Ofcom regulation defines a methodology to calculate the maximum WSD transmission power through a single-entry method for the maximum intersystem interference. Due to this, the aggregate interference of cochannel WSDs operating in the same region may exceed this maximum intersystem interference. In addition to this problem, it is verified that the Ofcom methodology does not define maximum intersystem interference by the same criterion of intrasystem interference as was defined by the primary TV system planning. This thesis develops a new methodology for calculating the transmission power of WSDs that solves the problems identified in the Ofcom methodology. The proposed methodology guarantees the protection of the digital TV receiver through a multiple-entry approach of the WSDs interference and, additionally, increases the WSD system capacity when compared to the Ofcom methodology.

Heath, Daniel. "Digital micromirror devices and femtosecond laser pulses for rapid laser micromachining". Thesis, University of Southampton, 2017. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/417275/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Laser machining techniques are almost ubiquitous in industry for micro- to nanoscale fabrication. It is essential for the advancement of the field that faster, cheaper processes be developed. Enhancements in speed and fidelity of production can be made to both additive and subtractive writing techniques by using Digital Micromirror Devices (DMD), particularly when coupled with femtosecond laser pulses. The objective of this thesis is the demonstration of DMDs used in conjunction with ultrafast laser pulses for both novel and rapid machining applications; primarily image-projection based techniques, using DMDs as dynamic intensity masks, will be used for subtractive patterning, laserinduced transfer, multi-photon polymerisation and centimetre-scale micro-machining. The dynamic nature of the DMD enables its application to the field of multiple exposures, and the centimetre-scale machining is applied to functional biological assays. Adaptive mask techniques are used to enhance the image reproduction achieved, correct for positional errors introduced by translation stages, as well as to attain greyscale intensity control with a DMD in single ultrashort pulses. A new technique for producing digital holograms is developed, and will form the basis of future work. Image projection-based patterning using DMDs as dynamic intensity masks is shown via ablation, multiphoton polymerisation and Laser-Induced Transfer (LIT). Ablation was achieved in a range of materials (including, but not limited to: gold, graphite, diamond, bismuth telluride and antimony telluride, glass, nickel, glucose, and gelatin), with 2 micron resolutions in samples and overall sizes of 1cm2. A multiple exposure technique reduced final structure resolution by 2.7 compared to the diffraction limit possible in a single exposure – from 1m to 370nm on one experimental setup, and from 727nm to 270nm on a second setup. The first demonstration of shaped, solid-phase LIT deposits has been made, both in forward and backward directions of transfer. Adaptive optics techniques have been developed for DMD mask corrections, and have reduced the positional error of samples introduced by translation stages. Greyscale intensity patterns have been projected at samples using the strictly binary-style DMD display technology, and the loss of intensity in high spatial frequencies at the sample has been addressed. A novel method for the generation of binary holograms is introduced, which allows for several additional degrees of control over spatial intensity patterns when using DMDs, such as the effective mask position relative to imaging optics, greyscale control, the formation of images at multiple planes, phase control, and overall lateral shifts of the intensity distribution below a single DMD pixel width.

Jani, Dhanendra Dinesh. "An efficient test generation algorithm for behavioral descriptions of digital devices". Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53723.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
An efficient test generation algorithm for behavioral descriptions is discussed. It generates tests for behavioral dataflow descriptions of digital circuits written in VHDL. The algorithm accepts input descriptions containing multiple process statements and concurrent signal assignment statements. The fault model based on previous research includes micro-operation and control faults. The test generation algorithm uses artificial intelligence techniques of goal trees and rule databases and it can make use of human understanding of the device model to generate more efficient tests. An improved timing model helps detect conflicts more quickly and improves the speed performance of the algorithm. The test generation algorithm has been used to generate tests for complex circuits. Results of fault coverage experiments for some of these circuits is presented.

This thesis investigates the characterization (and modeling) of devices that perform the interface between the digital and analog domains, such as the output buffers of the Integrated Circuits (ICs). Modern wireless transceivers are moving towards the software-defined radio (SDR) concept proposed by Mitola. The ideal architecture makes use of powerful digital signal processors (DSP) and extends the digital blocks’s operation as close as possible to the antenna. In this way, it is not surprising that there is a growing concern regarding the characterization of the blocks that perform the interface between the analog and digital domains, being the analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters (ADCs/DACs) two good examples of these circuits. Within the high speed digital circuits, such as Flash memories, a similar role is played by the output buffers. They act as an interface between the digital (logic core) and the analog radio frequency domains (package/printed circuit board), determining the signal integrity of the transmitted data. In order to speed up the signal integrity analysis, at the design stage, it is fundamental to have models that are simultaneously computationally efficient and accurate. Typically, the extraction/validation of models for output buffers is performed by using characterization data obtained from either the simulation of the transistor level model (if available) or from measurements. The latter approach is not sensitive to intellectual property issues but is rarely addressed in literature referred to output buffers’ characterization. Therefore, this thesis addresses the development of a novel measurement setup for the characterization and modeling of high speed output buffers, naturally extendable to switched-mode RF-CMOS amplifiers. Based on a welldefined experimental procedure, a state of the art model is extracted and validated. The developed measurement setup addresses not only the integrity of the output signals (signal integrity) but also of the power supply voltages (power integrity). In order to determine the sensitivity of the estimated quantities (voltage and current) to the errors in the different variables of the experimental procedure, an uncertainty analysis is presented.

Abstract (sommario):
In the last decades, the technological revolution that hit the world completely transformed the way of doing business. Digital technology has been changing the business strategy, products and services across many industries and sectors. In order to maintain competitive advantage and capture new growth opportunities, companies should change and adapt their business models. For this reason, most companies are moving towards the platform business model. Digital platforms, in fact, are becoming more and more established in the digital age. They are referred to as digital as they can be accessed only through the Internet, making use of different devices, such as desktop, mobile, tablet and console. This dissertation analyzes digital platforms in a theoretical framework, explaining the shift from the traditional model to the platform business model and conducts then a longitudinal multi-country analysis on the devices where platforms are used.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis describes research which explores the importance and feasibility of involving older people as equal partners in the creative design of digital devices for an ageing population. In exploring this topic, I have carried out two preliminary studies, a pilot study and a major empirical study. Firstly, I invited three groups of people, including very old people, active older people and postgraduate students, to evaluate a mock-‐up model of an interactive device intended for older people that was designed using a standard design process. The results of this study suggested that products without an adequate contribution from older people would not always meet their needs. Secondly, I carried out observations of very old people, active older people, and young designers to identify factors that influence the way in which both older people and young designers can be involved in the creative design process. These factors included experiences with technology, processes and approaches currently applied with older people and designers, factors that stimulate or inhibit creativity, and practical constraints such as health issues. The results of these observations fed into the design of a pilot study, where I tested the content of a creative design process and a procedure for analysing data for the main empirical study. The main study involved three creative workshops where the same creative methods were employed with different sets of people: young designers, mixed groups (with older people and designers) and older people only. The results show that older people are able to participate in a creative design process; however, certain practical constraints have to be taken into account. Also, older people perform better when they work together with designers. Finally, the mixed groups with older people, who have relevant life experiences, and designers, who are familiar with the newest technology, may be more suitable for designing appropriate products for the older population.

The rapid pace of technical innovation highlights the issues of the relationship between users, digital objects and environments, and, in the context of graphical interfaces, shows the existence of Visual-Digital Literacy. The digital medium, built by the intersection of different media that mix distinct visual genres, requires people to have a specific set of skills, since the instability of digital interactions defines a unique dynamic between designers, platforms and users. Hence, it becomes of the utmost importance to research on the different skills and processes of literacy developed by technology users when interacting in the digital sphere. This master s research proposes as an overall intention to investigate the impact of Visual Literacy, through the acquisition of repertoires, in users access to mobile devices. To that effect, the research hypothesis is that a limited visual repertoire is a direct cause of users deficiency in Digital Literacy skills. For a theoretical basis, the evolution of technologies and graphical user interfaces (GUIs) were raised; as well as outlined the concepts of Visual and Digital Literacy. Succeeding this review, two evaluation techniques were defined: an Iconographic Comprehension Test and a Usability Test. The final results of both applied techniques showed that Visual Literacy does influence on the performance of users in the interaction with devices, proving that Digital Literacy relates to people visual repertoires.

Gutiérrez, Campo Ana María. "Development of integrated silicon photonics modulation devices for digital and analog applications". Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de València, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10251/33330.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Silicon photonics is one of the most exciting and fastest growing photonic technologies in recent years. The salient feature of this technology is its compatibility with the mature silicon IC manufacturing based on complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) processes widely used in microelectronic industry. Another motivation is the availability of high-quality silicon-on-insulator (SOI) planar waveguide circuits that offer strong optical confinement due to the high index contrast between silicon (n=3.45) and SiO2 (n=1.45). This opens up miniaturization and very large scale integration of photonic devices allowing photonic integrated circuits for a wide range of applications and markets, from optical telecommunications to bio-photonic devices or precise fibre sensors. Optical modulators are key building-blocks for high speed signal transmission and information processing in any photonic interconnection solution. The work developed in this thesis, as part of the objectives of the European project HELIOS in which it is framed, is essentially focused on realizing compact and efficient modulators integrated on silicon chips. The thesis consists of three main chapters as well as the concluding section on the work accomplished. Chapter one is aimed at giving a general description of the benefits of using silicon photonics, showing its challenges and opportunities as well as at giving a deeply overview of all issues related to the electro-optic modulation. Chapter two is devoted to develop silicon modulators with high features for digital applications. Specifically, new optical structures different to the conventional ones are presented with the aim of enhancing the modulation performance or at least several critical parameters in the modulation. Chapter three is dedicated to the analog applications. The concept of microwave photonics is described as well as different researches carried out in the analog scope for application in the field of integrated microwave photonics, all of them using CMOS-compatible electro-optic silicon modulators which validate the potential of silicon photonics as a promising approach for enabling the development of integrated microwave photonics applications. Finally, conclusions on the work realized are provided in Chapter 4.

Nowadays the computational thinking is one of the most important skills a person should develop to be more well prepared for the near future. By the middle of this century, this ability will probably have the same level of importance of fundamental skills like reading and writing, and people will need to learn programming and problem solving with computational thinking from an early age. Studies are trying to stimulate the introduction of this skill set to young children, and this has been done since 1967 when the Massachusetts Institute of Technology created the first language aiming this kind of public called LOGO. Although the studies in the area of developing computational thinking on children started almost six decades ago, the importance of teaching programming in schools is not widely spread, in places like Brazil, this skill is starting to be introduced to children older than 10 yearsold. In contrast, the United States and some european countries are using a variable set of approaches to introduce these concepts to young children varying from 4 to 12 years old, usually by creating toys and games which these concepts can be developed within them. Unfortunately most of approaches are aimed for already literate children, very few of them do not require reading skills, limiting the minimum age of users to approximately 6 years old. This work has the intention to argue that toddlers are not only able to develop algorithms and initiate the development of computational thinking skills, but also this practice will be quite profitable for their future. A survey involving 9 children with between 4 and 6 years old is presented, where the selected children played a game developed specially for this work, and their performance was able to produce data that is going to be analyzed further to test the main hypothesis which is " Toddlers can develop algorithmic thinking by playing programming games ", additionally, while reviewing the literature, problems related to the effects of letting children use smart devices and internet without supervision were identified, in order to advocate the usage of this technology by young children, possible causes and risks of these problems are presented and ways to avoid them as well, the results of this work are encouraging, all toddlers involved were able to play the game developed.

Abstract (sommario):
Portable and wearable computing devices such as smart watches, navigation units, mobile phones, and tablet computers commonly ship with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) supported locational awareness. Locational functionality is no longer limited to navigation specific devices such as satellite navigation devices and location tracking systems. Instead the use of these technologies has extended to become secondary functionality on many devices, including mobile phones, cameras, portable computers, and video game consoles. The increase in use of location aware technology is of use to forensic investigators as it has the potential to provide historic locational information. The evidentiary value of these devices to forensic investigators is currently limited due to the lack of available forensic tools and published methods to properly acquire and analyse these data sources. This research addresses this issue through the synthesis of common processes for the development of forensic procedure to acquire and interpret historic locational data from embedded, locationally aware devices. The research undertaken provides a framework for the generation of forensic procedure to enable the forensic extraction of historical locational data. The framework is device agnostic, relying instead on differential analysis and structured testing to produce a validated method for the extraction of locational history. This framework was evaluated against five devices, selected on a basis of market penetration, availability and a stage of deduplication. The examination of the framework took place in a laboratory developed specifically for the research. This laboratory replicates all identified sources of location data for the devices selected. In this case the laboratory is able to simulate cellular (2G and 3G), GNSS (NAVSTAR and GLONASS), and Wi-Fi locationing services. The laboratory is a closed-sky facility, meaning that the laboratory is contained within a faraday cage and all signals are produced and broadcast internally. Each selected device was run through a series of simulations. These simulations involved the broadcast of signals, replicating the travel of a specific path. Control data was established through the use of appropriate data recording systems, for each of the simulated location signals. On completion of the simulation, each device was forensically acquired and analysed in accordance with the proposed framework. For each experiment carried out against the five devices, the control and experimental data were compared. In this examination any divergence less than those expected for GNSS were ignored. Any divergence greater than this was examined to establish cause. Predictable divergence was accepted and non-predictable divergence would have been noted as a limitation. In all instances where data was recovered, all divergences were found to be predictable. Post analysis, the research found that the proposed framework was successful in producing locational forensic procedure in a non-device specific manner. This success was confirmed for all the devices tested.

Abstract (sommario):
For users away from the office or home, there is an increasing demand for mobile solutions that offer effective collaborative facilities on the move. The mobile cellular device, or “smart phone”, can offer a ubiquitous platform to deliver such services, provided that its many physical and technological constraints can be overcome. In an effort to better support mobile collaboration, this thesis presents a contributing Mobile Exchange Architecture (MEA) designed to improve upon the capabilities provided by mobile devices to enable synchronous exchange of digital media during a phone conversation using wireless networks and cellular devices. This research includes the design and development of one such MEA in the form of a fully functional Photo-conferencing service, supporting shared remote interaction techniques, simultaneous voice communication and seamless digital media exchange between remote and collocated mobile users. Furthermore, through systematic design, experimental evaluations and field studies we evaluate the effects of different shared remote interaction techniques – 'pointing', 'scaling', 'mixed' and 'hybrid' – assessing the task effort required by users when interacting around shared images across resource constrained mobile devices. This thesis presents a direction for the future development of technologies and methods to enable a new era of scalable always-to-hand mobile collaborative environments.

Abstract (sommario):
The business drivers within managed care are mandating that physicians have point-of-care access to medical reference data, patient specific data, formularies, treatment protocols, and billing/coding information. One emerging technology that has the potential to provide this access with little economic investment is the mobile Personal Digital Assistant. The authors address a variety of wireless technologies and security concerns regarding real-time access to patient data. The family practice staff at the Naval Hospital Lemoore explored and contrasted the capabilities of commercially available PDAs, wireless interfaces, and medical software applications to ascertain their value within the Military Health System. A production-ready interface between the Composite Health Care System and the Nutrition Management Information Server demonstrates the potential for eliminating the difficulties associated with documenting patient encounters and capturing charges. Survey tools generate a requirements standard for deployment of this technology within the Military Health System on an enterprise-wide scale with a hybrid approach to packaging based on functionality. The authors recommend the Military Health System embrace this technology as a means to realize its vision of best value health services.

Abstract (sommario):
Physics
Ph.D.
While magnesium diboride (MgB2) was first synthesized in the 1950s, MgB2’s superconductive properties were not discovered until 2001. It has the highest superconducting transition temperature of all the metallic superconductors at ~39 K at atmospheric pressure. MgB2 is also unique in that it has a two superconductive gaps, a pi gap at 2 meV and a sigma gap at 7.1 meV. There are a theoretical models discussing the inter- and intra- gap scattering of the superconductivity of MgB2 and the Josephson transport of MgB2 Josephson Junctions. The focus of this work is to further the study of all-MgB2 Josephson junctions and quantum interference device technology. This work discusses the transport in all-MgB2 Josephson junctions and designing, fabricating, and measuring multi-junction devices. The junctions studied include all-MgB2 sandwich-type Josephson junctions (one with TiB2 normal conducting barrier and another with an MgO insulating barrier). The junction MgB2 films were deposited by hyprid physical-vapor deposition and the junction barrier were deposited by sputtering. The junctions were patterned and etched with UV photolithography and argon ion milling. With the TiB2 barrier we studied Josephson transport by the proximity effect. With these junctions, we also observed complete suppression of the critical current by an applied magnetic field showing for the first time a leakage free barrier in an all-MgB2 Josephson junction with a single ultrathin barrier. We also studied junctions utilizing MgO barrier deposited by reactive sputtering which gave a larger characteristic voltage of 1-3 mV compared to TiB2 barriers. By connecting several SQUIDs with varying loop areas we developed of two types of superconducting quantum interference filters (SQIFs). The first SQIF designed with 21 SQUIDs connected in parallel and the SQUID loops are sensitive to magnetic fields applied parallel to the substrate. The SQUID loop areas were designed to vary in such a way that the voltage modulation gave a unique peak corresponding to the absolute value of the applied magnetic field. The SQIF shows an antipeak height of 0.25 mV with a transfer function of 16 V/T at 3 K. The lowest noise measured for this SQIF is 110 pT/Hz1/2. The second SQIF is designed with 17 SQUIDs in parallel and the SQUID loops are sensitive to magnetic field perpendicular to the substrate. This SQIF has shown improved voltage modulation with a peak height of 1 mV and a transfer function of 7800 V/T. The noise sensitivity was measured at 70 pT/Hz1/2. The sensitivity of the SQIF shows MgB2 potential superconductor to improve performance of current superconductive electronics. Utilizing known all-MgB2 junctions and SQUID parameters two rapid single flux quantum (RSFQ) circuits were designed and tested. A toggle flip flop (TFF) operating as a frequency divider was developed. The TFF design consisted of a Josephson transmission line, a splitter, and an interferometer (a DC SQUID). The TFF utilized an improved designed, compared to previous all-MgB2 TFFs, and showed operation up to 335 GHz at 7 K and operation up to 30 K. A low frequency set-reset flip flop (SRFF) was also developed to demonstrate RSFQ digital logic. The SRFF design includes a DC-SFQ converter, a Josephson transmission line, and an inductively coupled readout SQUID. The SRFF demonstrates proper digital logic by toggling between a high and low voltage state with a sequential set and reset input. While these developed devices are not close to the potential that MgB2 allows, they do show the promise MgB2 based devices have in making more sensitive and faster superconductive logic devices.

Abstract (sommario):
The Programmable Logic Devices, PLO, have caused a major impact in logic design of digital systems in this decade. For instance, a twenty pin PLO device can replace from three hundreds to six hundreds Transistor Transistor Logic gates, which people have designed with since the 60s. Therefore, by using PLD devices, designers can squeeze more features, reduce chip counts, reduce power consumption, and enhance the reliability of the digital systems. This thesis covers the most important aspects of logic design using PLD devices. They are Logic Minimization and State Assignment. In addition, the thesis also covers a seldomly used but very useful design style, Self-Synchronized Circuits. The thesis introduces a new method to minimize Two-Level Boolean Functions using Graph Coloring Algorithms and the result is very encouraging. The raw speed of the coloring algorithms is as fast as the Espresso, the industry standard minimizer from Berkeley, and the solution is equally good. The thesis also introduces a rule-based state assignment method which gives equal or better solutions than STASH (an Intel Automatic CAD tool) by as much as twenty percent. One of the problems with Self-Synchronized circuits is that it takes many extra components to implement the circuit. The thesis shows how it can be designed using PLD devices and also suggests the idea of a Clock Chip to reduce the chip count to make the design style more attractive.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents the possibility to transfer Musical Instrument Digital Interface messages overBluetooth Low Energy. The main problem was to transmit the messages between two computers inless than 10 milliseconds. Anything above 10 milliseconds could be noticed as a delay by the personplaying or listening to the music. A prototype was written which could transfer Musical InstrumentDigital Interface messages over Bluetooth Low Energy between two Linux-computers together with atesting framework which was used to make measurements. The prototype was written in the languageC++ with the BlueZ library. The time it took for one packet to travel back and forth from the computerswas clocked to get an estimation of the time it took for a packet to travel from one computer to theother. The measured results showed that it was possible to reach the desired time of 10 milliseconds. The results can also be used when considering development of other kind of equipment and/or applicationsthat implements the use of Bluetooth Low Energy.
