Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. An explicit learning culture can help to systematize learning in small companies with a high degree of informal human resource development. The Dimensions of the Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ; Marsick & Watkins, 2003 ) has already been used to assess learning culture in many international studies mainly with large organizations. However, the multidimensional structure of the DLOQ was criticized in the past. Therefore, this study (N = 856) investigated the dimensionality of a German translation of the DLOQ in the German crafts sector and the effect of the DLOQ dimensions on two criterions (i. e., commitment, job satisfaction). The results confirm the expected seven-factor structure of the German DLOQ (21 items) with good psychometric characteristics that were stable in different subsamples (i. e., different work levels and sectors). The correlations with the criterions confirm the external validity of the DLOQ. Furthermore, leaders rated all seven DLOQ dimensions higher than nonleaders did.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this meta-analysis study is to examine the correlations between the Dimensions of Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ) and frequently examined outcomes including organizational performance and employee attitudes. Positive relationships were found between the DLOQ and organizational performance (e.g., financial, knowledge, and innovative performance) and employee attitudes (e.g., organizational commitment and job satisfaction) and the sub-dimensions (e.g., affective, continuance, and normative commitment), with a notable exception of a negative relationship between the DLOQ and turnover. Because the DLOQ has been used in many countries over the years, this study also examined the influence of national culture on the outcomes. Power distance moderated the relationship between the learning organization and overall organizational performance. Our meta-analytic review makes substantive contributions to the literature on the learning organization concept and the study of national culture as a significant moderator. Implications of these findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
PurposeThe purpose of this research is to assess the validity and reliability of the measurement scores related to the learning organization culture, the Dimensions of Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ), in an Iranian context. This research can contribute to the growing literature of learning in organizations.Design/ methodology/approachThe data were collected through distributing questionnaires to 54 service firms and manufacturing companies in ten major cities of Iran during the third quarter of 2010. Rigorous translation procedures, including both forward and backward processes, have been used to guarantee the relevance of this instrumentation in different cultural contexts. Confirmatory factor analysis, simple item‐internal consistency estimates, and item inter‐correlation analysis were performed to test the validity of DLOQ.Research limitations/implicationsThere are five positional limitations. First, this study relies on self‐report and different perceptions of questions can bring about percept‐percept bias. Second, the nature of this research is cross‐sectional which may cause causality among variables. Third, the various organizational levels in the questionnaire can render some misinterpretations while answering the questions. Furthermore, the length of the original questionnaire (43 questions) could cause lack of concentration and boredom, which in turn, can impact the results. Last, two constructs related to performance (knowledge and financial performance) in the questionnaire were omitted.Originality/valueThis study confirms, according to some statistical results, that the Iranian version of DLOQ has produced reliable measurement scores with the construct validity sufficient to measure the learning organization culture in the Iranian context.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This study aims to address the reliability and validity of the shortened versions of the Arabic dimensions of the learning organization questionnaire (DLOQ) to provide evidence on the learning organization (LO) concept in Lebanon and to draw attention to the applicability of the LO concept to facilitate the development and operationalization of the LO in the Lebanese context. Design/methodology/approach A total of 298 cases from five Lebanese firms were analyzed. Rigorous translation procedures have been applied to ensure the relevance of this instrument in the Arabic context. Confirmatory factor analysis, item-internal consistency estimates and item intercorrelation analysis showed that the 21- and the seven-item versions of the Arabic DLOQ have produced reliable measurement scores with a construct validity adequate to measure the LO culture in the Lebanese context. Findings The results of the current study confirmed that the shortened 21- and seven-item versions of the Arabic DLOQ are reliable, validated and applicable in the Lebanese context. This study also added to the stability of this foundation and pointed out weak areas that can be addressed by refining and developing the research, theory and practice of the LO. Research limitations/implications The results of this study based on the shortened versions contributed to operationalizing a conceptually developed LO theory, which is an appropriate example of theory building in an applied discipline. The results also suggest that the LO comprised interdependent building blocks that need to be integrated at the individual, team and organizational levels to promote change and development in a system. Practical implications This study provides managers and HR practitioners, especially in the Lebanese context, with a sound model of the LO theory to be applied in their organizations. Originality/value This study provides scholars with an understanding of the potential value of the LO in the Lebanese context. The results present evidence of the cultural impact on the perceptions of the LO in the Lebanese context, confirm the applicability of the shortened Arabic DLOQ and provide HR practitioners in Lebanon with a tool to diagnose LO characteristics accurately and consistently and to determine if there is a link between the LO and organizational performance.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Converting the healthcare delivery system into a learning organization is essential for improving health outcomes. As nurses are the forces that implement changes to meet organizational objectives, they are continuously involved in the learning process. This study aims to explain the learning organization dimensions as perceived by Nursing staff in Saudi Arabia. This is a descriptive study that uses a convenience sample of 550 nurses. Data was collected using The Dimensions of the Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ). The questionnaire consists of seven dimensions of learning organization. The DLOQ is based on a six-point Likert scale which was scored from 1-6. The study found the highest perceived dimension was “Embedded Systems.” While the lowest perceived dimension was “Empowerment.” The study concluded that while some dimensions were perceived highly by nurses like embedded systems, some dimensions, like system connections and empowerment, were perceived lowly which indicates areas of weaknesses in the organization.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This paper aims to measure the organizational learning in two of Estonia’s Higher Education Institutions (HEI) and identify connections between the organizational learning and various characteristics of HEI, such as ownership form and market participation rate. Design/methodology/approach Watkins and Marsick’s learning organization questionnaire, the Dimensions of the Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ), as one of the most popular organizational learning measurement instruments, was taken to measure the organizational learning of HEIs. Employees from a total of two Estonian HEIs, which differ in several characteristics, completed the Watkins and Marsick’s questionnaire. To identify the dependence of organizational learning on two observed HEIs’ characteristics, the ordinary least squares (OLS) regression analysis method was used. The analysis was performed at the DLOQ dimensions level. Findings The average organizational learning rate of the two universities under study was over average (3.72 on six-point Likert scale) which allows arguing that both observed institutions are learning organizations. The organizational learning rate based on samples of employees from two HEI-s depends on the institution`s market participation on the 90 per cent level in the first dimension, 95 per cent in the second dimension and 90 per cent in the sixth dimension. Correlation between the HEI ownership form and any of the DLOQ dimensions is weak. Research limitations/implications The study is based on two universities. The sample size is insufficient; therefore, the results cannot be generalized to HEIs as a whole. Originality/value The relationship between higher education institutions’ organizational learning and higher education institutions’ characteristics has not been investigated before. The results of this paper allow a better focus on different aspects of organizational learning in HEIs’ development and relate to their specific development needs.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to contribute to research on learning organizations in higher education institutions (HEIs), by researching the role of individual, group, and organization competencies and skills that support the (NUB) Al Nahda University in Egypt toward becoming a learning organization.Design/methodology/approach: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight executive academics and researchers in (NUB) Al Nahda University in Egypt. Questions emphasised leadership competencies, including those at individual, group, and organizational level, for utilising their skills in creating, sharing and transferring knowledge for modifying and changing their behaviour to achieve a learning organization.Findings: Leadership competencies emerged as a complementary component to the DLOQ framework and it was found that the Seven Characteristics (7Cs) proposed by Watkins and Marsick (2003) did not lead to being a learning organization, nor did being a learning organization lead to knowledge performance and financial performance by itself unless fully supported by leadership competencies, as was confirmed in the case of the Al-Nahda University operating in Egypt.Originality/value: There is still a lack of investigation and global response to the question of how leadership competencies can support learning inside higher education institutions. The outcomes of this research allow a better understanding of how leadership competencies can support the process of becoming a learning organization in HEIs, via a qualitative investigation of the DLOQ framework.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this research is to evaluate the Dimensions Of Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ) framework from the perspective of public sector organizations. We have used performance indicator data after organizational learning inspired intervention in a semi-autonomous network of public sector organizations. Design/methodology/approach This study used original administrative data to track the learning progress, as measured by a ratio of access to funding sources. The study also collected survey data using tailored DLOQ instruments and then determined the efficacy of DLOQ framework for public sector organizations. Several data analysis techniques were used to specify a final set for the learning organization instrument with construct validity and instrument reliability. Confirmatory factor analysis was selected to test the construct validity for the measurement of the dimensions of the learning organization and to verify the adequacy of the item to factor associations and the number of dimensions underlying the construct. Findings We found evidence that confirms that the organizational level (particularly the system connection) has a positive impact on organizational performance and a mediating effect on the relationships between the individual/group levels of learning organization characteristics and organizational performance. This study extends the Watkins and Marsick’s (1993, 1996) learning–organization framework that helped to produce case-specific outcomes such as the extent of error reduction. This framework provides a useful structure for other researchers to study learning dimensions and their relationships with other organizational performance variables. The results also show evidence of internal consistency and the construct reliability of the dimensions of the learning organization. Research limitations/implications Care should be taken in generalizing the structural equation model identified in this study. Because of the multidimensional and complex nature of the learning organization, the research setting for this study might be only one of the possible settings that specify the relationships among different levels of the learning organization and performance outcomes. There are rather complicated interactions among these dimensions and in each attribute of a learning organization. Originality/value This study theoretically confirms that the organizational level (particularly the system connection) has a positive impact on organizational performance and a mediating effect on the relationships between the individual/group levels of learning organization characteristics and organizational performance. This study also methodologically shows evidence of internal consistency and the construct reliability of the learning organization measures along with significant efficiency gain in theory.

Abstract (sommario):
When conducting canonical correlation analysis, researchers generally rely on function and structure coefficients when interpreting noteworthy canonical functions. This article describes how human resource development (HRD) researchers can use canonical commonality analysis to interpret their canonical functions more completely and thereby inform theory. Using the correlation matrix, we conducted a secondary analysis of data from the Dimensions of Learning Organizational Questionnaire (DLOQ) to illustrate the utility of canonical commonality analysis. Researchers will see how canonical commonality analysis can bring to light theoretically relevant relationships in canonical functions that might be left undetected by only examining function and structure coefficients.

Abstract (sommario):
SUMMARYDeformable linear objects (DLOs) have a wide variety of applications in a range of fields. Their key characteristic is that they extend much further in one of their dimensions than in the other two. Accurate motion planning is particularly important in the case of DLOs used in robotics applications. In this paper, a new strategy for planning the motions of DLOs under multiple constraints is proposed. The DLO was modeled as Cosserat elastic rods so that the deformation is simulated accurately and efficiently. The control of the motion of the DLO was enhanced by supplementing one gripper installed at each end with additional supports. This allows DLOs to undergo complex deformations, and thus avoid collisions during motion. The appropriate number of supports and their positions were determined, and then a rapidly exploring random tree algorithm was used to search for the best path to guide the DLO toward its target destination. The motion of the simulated DLO is described as it is controlled using two grippers and specific numbers of supports. To prove that the proposed DLO motion planning strategy can successfully guide relatively long DLOs through complex environments without colliding with obstacles, a case study of the strategy was conducted when guiding a DLO through a puzzle.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between perceived learning organization culture and core job characteristics in a sample of 264 knowledge workers from four organizations in South Korea. The dimensions of the learning organization questionnaire (DLOQ) and the job diagnostic survey (JDS) were used as measures. The result of a canonical correlation analysis indicated that the composite of learning organization culture (i.e., continuous learning, dialogue and inquiry, team learning, embedded system, empowerment, system connection, and strategic leadership) was modestly but significantly related to the composite of core job characteristics (i.e., variety, identity, significance, autonomy, and feedback), accounting for 34 percent of the shared variance between the two variable sets. More specifically, the effects of dialogue and inquiry, team learning, and system connection in learning organization culture were greater on feedback, autonomy, and task significance in job characteristics for knowledge workers in South Korea.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Earlier studies of social capital have focused on its influence on various aspects of business. There is substantial void in the literature on how social capital enables learning culture in organizations. The purpose of this paper is to explore direct and indirect relations between dimensions of social capital and learning culture in the organizational context. Design/methodology/approach A survey-based research was conducted in which the questionnaire based on the Dimensions of Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ) and social capital was used. Participants in this study were employees from an IT organization based in India. Data was subjected to structural equation modeling to understand causal relations between social capital and learning culture. Findings This empirical study emphatically shows that parameters of social capital positively influence individual learning. Results show that shared vision, shared narratives in the cognitive dimension; trust and identification in the relational dimension; and mutual confiding in the structural dimension have a positive influence on individual learning. Originality/value Findings in this paper indicate that a culture of learning in organizations starts with individuals and it can be fueled and sustained by social capital embedded within the organization if managers focus on enabling the factors identified in this study through policies and practices.

Gilchrist, Laura S. and Karen A. Mesce. Coactivation of putative octopamine- and serotonin-containing interneurons in the medicinal leech. J. Neurophysiol. 78: 2108–2115, 1997. Possible interactions between octopamine-immunoreactive (IR) and serotonergic neurons in the CNS of the medicinal leech were investigated. Simultaneous intracellular recordings of serotonin-containing neurons (either the Retzius neuron or cell 21) and the dorsolateral octopamine-IR (DLO) neuron demonstrated that both sets of neurons are coactive at times. Depolarization of either serotonergic cell 21 or the Retzius neuron did not alter the membrane potential of the DLO. Similarly, depolarization of the DLO did not affect the serotonergic neurons examined. Because it was found that the DLO and either the serotonergic cell 21 or Retzius neuron were at times coactive, we looked for possible sources of common excitatory inputs. The centrally located pressure (P)- and touch (T)-sensitive mechanosensory neurons excited the DLOs through a polysynaptic pathway. Stimulation of nociceptive (N) mechanosensory neurons did not cause a measurable depolarization in the membrane potential of the DLO. Through simultaneous recordings of the DLO, cell 21, and a particular identified mechanosensory neuron, it was demonstrated that activity in the T or P cells can excite both serotonergic cell 21 and the octopamine-IR DLO. These findings indicate that, in many instances, both serotonin and octopamine, biogenic amines with neuromodulatory actions in many different invertebrates, may be released simultaneously in the leech.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractOver the past few decades, organizational learning has become a significant concept for the development of organizations. Numerous scholars and experts in librarianship have advocated the importance of creating a learning library for handling various challenges, such as the rapid development of the Internet and digital technology. However, an effective learning organization relies on a positive learning culture and starts with an individual’s commitment to learn. This study investigated the learning methods that are commonly adopted by staff in Taiwan’s university and college libraries, measuring their values regarding the organizational learning culture and knowledge performance, and exploring the relationships among individual learning methods, organizational learning culture, and knowledge performance in these libraries. Based on the Dimensions of the Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ) and previous studies, this study designed and conducted a questionnaire survey of 478 library employees in 162 universities and colleges across Taiwan. Some key findings of this study included: (1) the individual learning method of “self-learning by using Internet resources” is adopted most frequently by library staff in Taiwan’s universities and colleges; (2) the overall values of staff members regarding their organizational learning cultures are not strong; (3) the two dimensions “creating continuous learning opportunities” and “creating systems to capture and share learning” can influence the methods of library staffs’ learning formally and informally, and they can positively contribute to enhance the knowledge performance of the library. In addition, informal learning methods are likely to enhance organizational knowledge performance.

Abstract (sommario):
(1) Background: A learning organizational culture is crucial to the safety of patients and the quality of public health care. The aim of this study was to assess the learning organizational culture and capacity of Greek public hospitals. (2) Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was carried out in six public general hospitals and stratified sampling was used as the sampling technique. A total of 480 questionnaires were distributed to health care professionals and 380 valid questionnaires were returned (78% response rate). The comprehensive form of the Dimensions of Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ), which was adapted and translated into Greek, was used for data collection in this survey. (3) Results: The level of learning organizational culture and capacity in the health units are very low. All seven dimensions of the learning organizational instrument are lower than the theoretically neutral median (3.0). Health care employees believe that the hospital’s existing culture and management practices do not foster and contribute to continuing learning, which is the fundamental aspect of self-development, department development and performance improvement. (4) Conclusions: Greek public hospitals need to adopt different types of leadership practices and culture in order to be able to facilitate organizational learning. Organizational learning (OL) is based on collaborative working, a culture that encompasses learning as participation in the organizational work practice. This transformation of culture should take place at all levels of learning to enhance results.

Abstract (sommario):
The COVID-19 pandemic situation forced to look for other ways to provide continuous education around the world, which highlighted the importance and necessity of online education platforms and digital learning object (DLO) while going through this shift (Zhou et al., 2020; Viner et al., 2020; Wang et al., 2020). Teachers, in primary schools as well, had to reorganize completely their curriculum and assignments to adapt them to the virtual environment. This paper, based on the experiences of primary school teachers, aims to reveal the challenges faced by the teachers when within two weeks all Lithuanian schools and universities had to switch to remote education from face-to-face education and when the adoption of DLOs moved from optional to compulsory ‘mode’ as learning process became remote. The research problem is analyzed primarily by revealing the theoretical aspects of the research, i.e., the concept of the DLO, the specifics of the adoption of DLOs in primary education and the challenges considered through the types of barriers. The findings indicate that teachers experienced challenges of practical training, issues in pupils’ assessment due to the lack of participation in the process of assignment completion, time constrain, different computer systems used, issues of online security, internet access and support. The study also identified the challenges of practical origin, namely, difficulties in keeping pupils’ concentration and attention throughout the lesson, lower level of teacher’s control during lessons as well as differences in pupils’ technical skills to use computers. Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is a common cause of otitis media and respiratory tract infections. Outer membrane proteins (OMP) and lipooligosaccharide (LOS) are major surface antigens of NTHi and potential vaccine candidates. De-O-acylated LOS (dLOS) or oligosaccharide (OS) was coupled to total OMP to form dLOS-OMP and OS-OMP conjugates, while a dLOS-tetanus toxoid (TT) was synthesized for comparison. These conjugates were evaluated in mice and rabbits for immunogenicity. dLOS-OMP elicited a better boostable antibody response against LOS than did dLOS-TT, while OS-OMP was not immunogenic. Formulation of the conjugates with Ribi adjuvant significantly enhanced the immunogenicity of dLOS-OMP and dLOS-TT but not that of OS-OMP. In addition, rabbit antisera elicited by dLOS-OMP but not dLOS-TT (or OMP alone) demonstrated bactericidal activity against 40% of the NTHi strains tested. These results indicate that dLOS is a better derivative of LOS than OS and that OMP is a good carrier for NTHi LOS-based conjugate vaccines.

Abstract (sommario):
Although lung diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DlCO) is a widely used test of diffusive O2 transfer, few studies have directly related DlCO to O2-diffusing capacity (DlO2); none has used the components of DlCO, i.e., conductance of alveolar membrane and capillary blood, to predict DlO2 from rest to exercise. To understand the relationship between DlCO and DlO2 at matched levels of cardiac output, we analyzed cumulative data from rest to heavy exercise in 43 adult dogs, with normal lungs or reduced lung capacity following lung resection, that were studied by two techniques. 1) A rebreathing (RB) technique was used to measure DlCO and pulmonary blood flow at two O2 tensions, independent of O2 exchange. DlCO was partitioned into CO-diffusing capacity of alveolar membrane and pulmonary capillary blood volume using the Roughton-Forster equation and converted into an equivalent DlO2, [DlO2(RB)]. 2) A multiple inert-gas elimination technique (MIGET) was used to measure ventilation-perfusion distributions, O2 and CO2 exchange under hypoxia, to derive DlO2 [DlO2(MIGET)] by the Lilienthal-Riley technique and Bohr integration. For direct comparisons, DlO2(RB) was interpolated to the cardiac output measured by the Fick principle corresponding to DlO2(MIGET). The DlO2-to-DlCO ratio averaged 1.61. Correlation between DlO2(RB) and DlO2(MIGET) was similar in normal and post-resection groups. Overall, DlO2(MIGET) = 0.975 DlO2(RB); mean difference between the two techniques was under 5% for both animal groups. We conclude that, despite various uncertainties inherent in these two disparate methods, the Roughton-Forster equation adequately predicts diffusive O2 transfer from rest to heavy exercise in canines with normal, as well as reduced, lung capacities.

We develop a systematic DLCQ perturbation theory and show that DLCQ S-matrix does not have a covariant continuum limit for processes with p+=0 exchange. This implies that the role of the zero mode is more subtle than ever considered in DLCQ and hence must also be treated with great care in nonperturbative approach. We also make a brief comment on DLCQ in string theory.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Moraxella catarrhalis strain 25238 detoxified lipooligosaccharide (dLOS)-protein conjugates induced a significant rise of bactericidal anti-LOS antibodies in animals. This study reports the effect of active or passive immunization with the conjugates or their antiserum on pulmonary clearance of M. catarrhalis in an aerosol challenge mouse model. Mice were injected subcutaneously with dLOS-tetanus toxoid (dLOS-TT), dLOS–high-molecular-weight proteins (dLOS-HMP) from nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae(NTHi), or nonconjugated materials in Ribi adjuvant and then challenged with M. catarrhalis strain 25238 or O35E or NTHi strain 12. Immunization with dLOS-TT or dLOS-HMP generated a significant rise of serum anti-LOS immunoglobulin G and 68% and 35 to 41% reductions of bacteria in lungs compared with the control (P < 0.01) following challenge with homologous strain 25238 and heterologous strain O35E, respectively. Serum anti-LOS antibody levels correlated with its bactericidal titers against M. catarrhalis and bacterial CFU in lungs. Additionally, immunization with dLOS-HMP generated a 54% reduction of NTHi strain 12 compared with the control (P < 0.01). Passive immunization with a rabbit antiserum against dLOS-TT conferred a significant reduction of strain 25238 CFU in lungs in a dose- and time-dependent pattern compared with preimmune serum-treated mice. Kinetic examination of lung tissue sections demonstrated that antiserum-treated mice initiated and offset inflammatory responses more rapidly than preimmune serum-treated mice. These data indicate that LOS antibodies (whether active or passive) play a major role in the enhancement of pulmonary clearance of different test strains of M. catarrhalis in mice. In addition, dLOS-HMP is a potential candidate for a bivalent vaccine against M. catarrhalis and NTHi infections.

Abstract (sommario):
e17552 Background: Multiple treatments with similar efficacy exist for mPC, leaving patients (pts) with complicated treatment choices. Shared decision-making (SDM) can facilitate treatment decisions. The extent to which SDM is used in mPC is unknown. We assessed mPC pt, caregiver, and physician perceptions of decision locus of control (DLOC) (SDM vs. physician- or pt-directed decisions), and the degree of agreement between groups. Methods: Pt/caregiver/physician triads completed surveys of decision-making practices between 12/2016 and 11/2017 after a clinic visit in which a decision occurred. Pts were included only if they had a caregiver present. To evaluate the degree of agreement between pt, caregiver, and physician perceptions of DLOC, we used the quadratic-weighted kappa coefficient (κ). Agreement was evaluated on an overall basis and by pt age group (5-year increments). Results: 50 pt/caregiver/physician triads participated, with median pt age of 72 yo. Most pts were white (96%) and married (90%). A majority of pts, caregivers, and physicians reported SDM (66%, 56%, and 52%, respectively). No group reported completely pt-directed decisions. Pts and physicians demonstrated agreement about DLOC for most encounters (weighted κ = 0.35; P = 0.01). Overall, pts and physicians agreed on the DLOC in 44% of cases, and SDM was the most common agreed-upon DLOC (36%). Relative to physicians, 34% of pts reported more pt influence on DLOC, and 22% of pts reported less pt influence on DLOC. In contrast, caregiver reports of DLOC were independent of physician reports (weighted κ = 0.23; P = 0.55). Overall, caregivers and physicians agreed on DLOC in 38% of cases, and SDM was the most common agreed-upon DLOC (32%). Relative to physicians, 46% of caregivers reported more pt influence on DLOC and 16% of caregivers reported less pt influence on DLOC. There was a statistically significant difference in the degree of agreement by pt age group between pts and physicians (P = 0.045) and caregivers and physicians (P = 0.002), although no specific pattern according to pt age was noted. Conclusions: A majority of pts, caregivers, and physicians reported SDM occurring in routine clinical visits for mPC. Pts reported a higher degree of agreement with their physicians in DLOC than caregivers. Both pts and caregivers perceived greater pt influence on treatment choice than physicians. Efforts to explore the association between SDM, pt satisfaction, and quality of life are ongoing.

Abstract (sommario):
Background Various digital learning objects (DLOs) are available via the World Wide Web, showing the flow of clinical procedures. It is unclear to what extent these freely accessible Internet DLOs facilitate or hamper students’ acquisition of clinical competence. Objective This study aimed to understand the experience of undergraduate students across clinical disciplines—medicine, dentistry, and nursing—in using openly accessible Internet DLOs, and to investigate the role of Internet DLOs in facilitating their clinical learning. Methods Mid-year and final-year groups were selected from each undergraduate clinical degree program of the University of Hong Kong—Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), and Bachelor of Nursing (BNurs). All students were invited to complete a questionnaire on their personal and educational backgrounds, and their experiences and views on using Internet DLOs in learning clinical procedures. The questionnaire design was informed by the findings of six focus groups. Results Among 439 respondents, 97.5% (428/439) learned a variety of clinical procedures through Internet DLOs. Most nursing students (107/122, 87.7%) learned preventive measures through Internet DLOs, with a lower percentage of medical students (99/215, 46.0%) and dental students (43/96, 45%) having learned them this way (both P<.001). Three-quarters (341/439, 77.7%) of students accessed DLOs through public search engines, whereas 93.2% (409/439) accessed them by watching YouTube videos. Students often shared DLOs with classmates (277/435, 63.7%), but rarely discussed them with teachers (54/436, 12.4%). The accuracy, usefulness, and importance of Internet DLOs were rated as 6.85 (SD 1.48), 7.27 (SD 1.53), and 7.13 (SD 1.72), respectively, out of a high score of 10. Conclusions Self-exploration of DLOs in the unrestricted Internet environment is extremely common among current e-generation learners and was regarded by students across clinical faculties as an important supplement to their formal learning in the planned curriculum. This trend calls for a transformation of the educator’s role from dispensing knowledge to guidance and support.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Moraxella catarrhalis is an important human mucosal pathogen. This study investigated the effect of intranasal immunization with a detoxified-lipooligosaccharide-cross-reactive mutant of diphtheria toxin (dLOS-CRM) vaccine candidate on pulmonary clearance following an aerosol challenge of mice with M. catarrhalis. Intranasal immunization with dLOS-CRM plus cholera toxin induced a significantly dose-dependent increase of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and IgG in the nasal wash, lung lavage fluid, saliva, and fecal extract. In addition, serum IgG, IgM, and IgA against LOS of M. catarrhalis were detected. LOS-specific antibody-forming cells were found in the nasal passages, spleens, nasally associated lymphoid tissues, cervical lymph nodes, lungs, and Peyer's patches using an enzyme-linked immunospot assay. The dLOS-CRM vaccine induced a significant bacterial clearance (70 to 90%) of both homologous and heterologous strains in the lungs compared to that observed in the controls (P < 0.01). Intriguingly, intranasal immunization with dLOS-CRM showed a higher level of bacterial clearance compared with subcutaneous injections with dLOS-CRM. These data indicate that dLOS-CRM induces specific mucosal and systemic immunity through intranasal immunization and also provides effective bacterial clearance. On the basis of these results, we believe that dLOS-CRM should undergo continued testing to determine whether it would induce protective immune response in humans.

Abstract (sommario):
Objectives. This study attempts to introduce the Driving Locus of Control (DLoC), a method focused on the internal or external source of attribution of the driving behaviour, to the Czech context. This study also relates DLoC to attitudes towards autonomous vehicles (AVs). Participants and setting. Out of the general population, 59 inquirers personally interviewed (CAPI) 1 065 respondents (49% women) in the age range between 15 and 92 years (M = 50, SD = 17). The respondents were sampled via multistage random sampling procedure, based on the list of addresses in the Czech Republic. Hypotheses. The authors hypothesised to replicate the original two-factor structure of the DLoC Scale and that the higher levels of internal DLoC result in not considering the improvement in traffic safety as the AVs replace human drivers. Statistical analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to analyse the factor structure of DLoC Scale. Hypotheses related to the empirical validity of the method were assessed via structural equation modelling. The reliability of DLoC Scale was calculated in terms of internal consistency (McDonald coefficient). Results. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed reasonably good support for structural validity of the one-dimensional DLoC-CZ15 factor model (χ2 = 426.967, df = 90, CFI = 0.964, TLI = 0.958, SRMR = 0.066, RMSEA = 0.065). In addition, the one-dimensional DLoC-CZ15 factor model showed acceptable internal consistency - ω = 0.9 (95% CI [0.89, 0.91]). The structural equation modelling found a relationship between DLoC and some of the items capturing attitudes towards AVs, too. Study limitations. The analysed data were obtained via interviews between respondents and inquirers. As a result, the study does not contain indicators of empirical validity measured by a methodologically different approach, such as an observation of driving behaviour.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Recent studies have shown that atmospheric mass-loss powered by the cooling luminosity of a planet’s core can explain the observed radius valley separating super-Earths and sub-Neptunes, even without photoevaporation. In this work, we investigate the dependence of this core-powered mass-loss mechanism on stellar mass (M*), metallicity (Z*), and age (τ*). Without making any changes to the underlying planet population, we find that the core-powered mass-loss model yields a shift in the radius valley to larger planet sizes around more massive stars with a slope given by dlog Rp/dlog M* ≃ 0.35, in agreement with observations. To first order, this slope is driven by the dependence of core-powered mass-loss on the bolometric luminosity of the host star and is given by dlog Rp/dlog M* ≃ (3α − 2)/36 ≃ 0.33, where (L*/L⊙) = (M*/M⊙)α is the stellar mass–luminosity relation and α ≃ 4.6 for the CKS data set. We therefore find, in contrast to photoevaporation models, no evidence for a linear correlation between planet and stellar mass, but cannot rule it out either. In addition, we show that the location of the radius valley is, to first order, independent of stellar age and metallicity. Since core-powered mass-loss proceeds over Gyr time-scales, the abundance of super-Earths relative to sub-Neptunes increases with age but decreases with stellar metallicity. Finally, due to the dependence of the envelope’s cooling time-scale on metallicity, we find that the radii of sub-Neptunes increase with metallicity and decrease with age with slopes given by dlog Rp/dlog Z* ≃ 0.1 and dlog Rp/dlog τ* ≃ −0.1, respectively. We conclude with a series of observational tests that can differentiate between core-powered mass-loss and photoevaporation models.

Abstract (sommario):
In the present study, we tried to find possible obstacles that Primary and Secondary education teachers face when managing Digital Learning Objects (DLOs) and/or Digital Simulation Tools (DST) in Science. One hundred seventy-six teachers from all over Greece answered the questionnaire. The results showed that the main reason for refusing to deal with DLOs and DSTs is the technological equipment. Also, the lack of adequate training level B 'results in about 25% of teachers not knowing the DSTs and 30% not knowing the DLOs. Factors such as the teaching experience, the specialty, the Pan-Hellenic examinations, the classes they teach, and the number of students they have per class negatively affect the teachers' attitude to get involved with the DLOs the DSTs. Finally, the negative attitude seems to be related to the lack of trust in the curriculum content as teachers prefer to search DLOs and DSTs on the internet connection. Further research with mixed methods of analysis would help to obtain satisfactory results.

Abstract (sommario):
Mathematics classrooms have a long history of what has been termed ‘unidimensional' character: a proclivity for student practice routines and teachers as experts and keepers of knowledge. This study investigates affordances of student-created digital learning objects (SC-DLOs) as transformative, design-for-learning practices in the hands of students. Historical distinctions are drawn between digital learning objects (DLOs) and digital learning artefacts (DLAs) primarily for teacher assessment of student learning. SC-DLOs are conceived as students' design for learning for the peer learning community. Hence, SC-DLOs have additional and different learning potential that aligns with 21st century skill development. A corpus of mathematics SC-DLOs (n=155) were analysed from learner blogs (Year 7-8) in a 1:1 digital initiative in New Zealand. A mixed-methods approach was used to investigate features of students' multimodal design for learning. A framework of implications informs and problematises understandings of transformative digital creation by students in mathematics.

Abstract (sommario):
Aims The purpose of this study was to clarify the clinical behaviour, prognosis, and optimum treatment of dedifferentiated low-grade osteosarcoma (DLOS) diagnosed based on molecular pathology. Patients and Methods We retrospectively reviewed 13 DLOS patients (six men, seven women; median age 32 years (interquartile range (IQR) 27 to 38)) diagnosed using the following criteria: the histological coexistence of low-grade and high-grade osteosarcoma components in the lesion, and positive immunohistochemistry of mouse double minute 2 homolog (MDM2) and cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) associated with MDM2 amplification. These patients were then compared with 51 age-matched consecutive conventional osteosarcoma (COS) patients (33 men, 18 women; median age 25 years (IQR 20 to 38)) regarding their clinicopathological features. Results The five-year overall survival (OAS) rates in the DLOS and COS patients were 85.7% and 77.1% (p = 0.728), respectively, and the five-year progression-free survival (PFS) rates were 57.7% and 44.9% (p = 0.368), respectively. A total of 12 DLOS patients received chemotherapy largely according to regimens for COS. Among the nine cases with a histological evaluation after chemotherapy, eight showed a poor response, and seven of these had a necrosis rate of < 50%. One DLOS patient developed local recurrence and five developed distant metastases. Conclusion Based on our study of 13 DLOS cases that were strictly defined by histological and molecular means, DLOS showed a poorer response to a standard chemotherapy regimen than COS, while the clinical outcomes were not markedly different. Abstract (sommario):
It is becoming increasingly important to understand the mechanism of regulatory elements on target genes in long-range genomic distance. 3C (chromosome conformation capture) and its derived methods are now widely applied to investigate three-dimensional (3D) genome organizations and gene regulation. Digestion-ligation-only Hi-C (DLO Hi-C) is a new technology with high efficiency and cost-effectiveness for whole-genome chromosome conformation capture. Here, we introduce the DLO Hi-C tool, a flexible and versatile pipeline for processing DLO Hi-C data from raw sequencing reads to normalized contact maps and for providing quality controls for different steps. It includes more efficient iterative mapping and linker filtering. We applied the DLO Hi-C tool to different DLO Hi-C datasets and demonstrated its ability in processing large data with multithreading. The DLO Hi-C tool is suitable for processing DLO Hi-C and in situ DLO Hi-C datasets. It is convenient and efficient for DLO Hi-C data processing.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Moraxella catarrhalis is an important bacterial cause of otitis media in children and respiratory tract infections in the elderly. Lipooligosaccharide (LOS), a major surface antigen of this bacterium, is a potential vaccine component against the organism. There are three major LOS serotypes (serotypes A, B, and C) in clinical isolates of M. catarrhalis. Our previous studies demonstrated that serotype A and B LOS-based conjugates were immunogenic in animals and elicited bactericidal antibodies. In this study, LOS from serotype C strain 26404 was isolated, detoxified, and conjugated to tetanus toxoid (TT) or the cross-reactive mutant (CRM) of diphtheria toxin to form detoxified LOS (dLOS)-TT, dLOS-CRM-1, and dLOS-CRM-2 vaccine candidates. The molar ratios (dLOS/protein) of the resulting conjugates were 47:1, 19:1, and 32:1, respectively, while the weight ratios were 0.94, 0.84 and 1.44, respectively. All conjugates were highly immunogenic in both mouse and rabbit models. Three subcutaneous injections of each conjugate formulated with the Ribi adjuvant elicited >700-fold increases in serum anti-LOS immunoglobulin G levels in mice (5 μg of dLOS) and >2,000-fold increases in rabbits (50 μg of dLOS). The resulting mouse and rabbit antisera showed complement-mediated bactericidal activity against the homologous strain. In addition, a representative rabbit antiserum showed bactericidal activity against 14 of 18 testable strains, and this bactericidal activity could be 100% inhibited by the serotype C or A LOS but only 30% inhibited by the serotype B LOS. These results indicate that the serotype C LOS-based conjugates can be used as vaccine components for further investigation in humans.

Abstract (sommario):
The network hub nodes consumed excessive energy and failed prematurely, thus it reduced the network lifetime. In order to solve the problem, distributed lifetime optimized routing algorithm (DLOR) for wireless sensor networks was proposed. Energy for transmitting data and neighbor node residual energy were considered comprehensively. Then new weight function was introduced and distributed asynchronous Bellman-Ford algorithm was also used to construct the shortest routing tree. Finally, data were gathered along the shortest routing tree to sink node. Simulation results show that DLOR algorithm can extend network lifetime and enable cost-effective energy consumption. Under certain conditions, DLOR algorithm outperforms PEDAP, GreedyDijkstra, LET, Ratio-w and Sum-w algorithms.
