Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Double-descent curves in neural networks describe the phenomenon that the generalisation error initially descends with increasing parameters, then grows after reaching an optimal number of parameters which is less than the number of data points, but then descends again in the overparameterized regime. In this paper, we use techniques from random matrix theory to characterize the spectral distribution of the empirical feature covariance matrix as a width-dependent perturbation of the spectrum of the neural network Gaussian process (NNGP) kernel, thus establishing a novel connection between the NNGP literature and the random matrix theory literature in the context of neural networks. Our analytical expressions allow us to explore the generalisation behavior of the corresponding kernel and GP regression. Furthermore, they offer a new interpretation of double-descent in terms of the discrepancy between the width-dependent empirical kernel and the width-independent NNGP kernel.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractManifera talaris, a voltzian conifer from the late early to middle Permian (ca. 270 Ma) of Texas, is the earliest known conifer to produce winged seeds indicative of autorotating flight. In contrast to autorotating seeds and fruits of extant plants, the ones ofM. talarisare exceptional in that they have variable morphology. They bore two wings that produced a range of wing configurations, from seeds with two equal-sized wings to single-winged specimens, via various stages of underdevelopment of one of the wings. To examine the effects of various seed morphologies on aerodynamics and dispersal potential, we studied the flight performance of paper models of three morphotypes: symmetric double-winged, asymmetric double-winged, and single-winged. Using a high-speed camera we identified the mode of descent (plummeting, gliding, autorotation) and quantified descent speed, autorotation frequency, and other flight characteristics. To validate such modeling as an inferential tool, we compared descent of extant analogues (kauri;Agathis australis) with descent of similarly constructed seed models. All three seed morphotypes exhibited autorotating flight behavior. However, double-winged seeds, especially symmetric ones, failed to initiate slow autorotative descent more frequently than single-winged seeds. Even when autorotating, symmetric double-winged seeds descend faster than asymmetric double-winged ones, and descent is roughly twice as fast compared to single-winged seeds. Moreover, the relative advantage that (effectively) single-winged seeds have in slowing descent during autorotation becomes larger as seed weight increases. Hence, the range in seed wing configurations inM. talarisproduced a wide variation in potential dispersal capacity. Overall, our results indicate that the evolutionarily novel autorotating winged seeds must have improved conifer seed dispersal, in a time when animal vectors for dispersion were virtually absent. Because of the range in wing configuration, the early evolution of autorotative flight in conifers was a functionally imperfect one, which provides us insight into the evolutionary developmental biology of autorotative seeds in conifers.

Abstract. In situ upper-air measurements are often made with instruments attached to weather balloons launched at the surface and lifted into the stratosphere. Present-day balloon-borne sensors allow near-continuous measurements from the Earth's surface to about 35 km (3–5 hPa), where the balloons burst and their instrument payloads descend with parachutes. It has been demonstrated that ascending weather balloons can perturb the air measured by very sensitive humidity and temperature sensors trailing behind them, particularly in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS). The use of controlled balloon descent for such measurements has therefore been investigated and is described here. We distinguish between the single balloon technique that uses a simple automatic valve system to release helium from the balloon at a preset ambient pressure, and the double balloon technique that uses a carrier balloon to lift the payload and a parachute balloon to control the descent of instruments after the carrier balloon is released at preset altitude. The automatic valve technique has been used for several decades for water vapor soundings with frost point hygrometers, whereas the double balloon technique has recently been re-established and deployed to measure radiation and temperature profiles through the atmosphere. Double balloon soundings also strongly reduce pendulum motion of the payload, stabilizing radiation instruments during ascent. We present the flight characteristics of these two ballooning techniques and compare the quality of temperature and humidity measurements made during ascent and descent.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Purpose To report a case of double descemet membrane forming a double anterior chamber following ‘Big bubble’ DALK converted to PKP. Results A 52-year-old man with keratoconus underwent DALK operation converted to PKP due to macro perforation of the descemet membrane. On the postoperative evaluation a remnant of the host's descemet membrane formed a double anterior chamber. After a few months with no intervention, an attempt to deflect a thickened descemet membrane had failed, making entrance into the anterior chamber in order to excise the membrane inevitable. Two years following the second surgery a graft endothelial failure and cataract formation was documented, leading to a second corneal transplantation and lens implantation. Conclusion Double DM is an unusual condition following a DALK procedure which was converted into PKP. In the above case this complication resulted in multiple procedures and graft failure. We believe that early interventions such as gas injection or YAG laser could have resulted in a more favorable outcome. How to cite this article Graffi S, Naftali M. Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, new variations of some well-known permutation statistics are introduced and studied. Firstly, a double-descent of a permutation π is defined as a position i where πi ≥ 2πi+1. By proofs by induction and direct proofs, recursive and explicit expressions for the number of n-permutations with k double-descents are presented. Also, an expression for the total number of double-descents in all n-permutations is presented. Secondly, a double-inversion of a permutation π is defined as a pair (πi,πj) where i<j but πi ≥ 2πj. The total number of double-inversions in all n-permutations is presented.

Abstract (sommario):
The functioning of machine learning algorithms relies heavily on the structure of the data they are given to study. Most research work in machine learning focuses on the study of homogeneous data, often modeled by independent and identically distributed random variables. However, data encountered in practice are often heterogeneous. In this thesis, we propose to consider heterogeneous data by endowing them with a variance profile. This notion, derived from random matrix theory, allows us in particular to study data arising from mixture models. We are particularly interested in the problem of ridge regression through two models: the linear ridge model and the random feature ridge model. In this thesis, we study the performance of these two models in the high-dimensional regime, i.e., when the size of the training sample and the dimension of the data tend to infinity at comparable rates. To this end, we propose asymptotic equivalents for the training error and the test error associated with the models of interest. The derivation of these equivalents relies heavily on spectral analysis from random matrix theory, free probability theory, and traffic theory. Indeed, the performance measurement of many learning models depends on the distribution of the eigenvalues of random matrices. Moreover, these results enabled us to observe phenomena specific to the high-dimensional regime, such as the double descent phenomenon. Our theoretical study is accompanied by numerical experiments illustrating the accuracy of the asymptotic equivalents we provide

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
“Croaks into Song” puts Sondheim’sFrogsinto the context of his other work. His music adds informed commentary. Sondheim is the most modern and insightful of present-day composers of musicals, skillfully reflecting not only the blackness of the times, but adding doubts about the future. Sondheim often turns to the classics, so Aristophanes’sThe Frogs, with its descent into Hades, was a natural choice. His work concludes with a hymn to death and praise for the way of life in Hades. There is political criticism, like the Aristophanic original: disparaging the insanity of war and know-nothing politicians, along with their followers who, like frogs, sing repetitious choruses. Rather than Aeschylus competing against Euripides, as in Aristophane’ play, here Shakespeare debates Shaw, yet some of the same artistic issues are raised.

Abstract (sommario):
‘Can we doubt … that individuals having any advantage, however slight, over others, would have the best chance of surviving and of procreating their kind?’ In the Origin of Species (1859) Darwin challenged many of the most deeply held beliefs of the Western world. His insistence on the immense length of the past and on the abundance of life-forms, present and extinct, dislodged man from his central position in creation and called into question the role of the Creator. He showed that new species are achieved by natural selection, and that absence of plan is an inherent part of the evolutionary process. Darwin's prodigious reading, experimentation, and observations on his travels fed into his great work, which draws on material from the Galapagos Islands to rural Staffordshire, from English back gardens to colonial encounters. The present edition provides a detailed and accessible discussion of his theories and adds an account of the immediate responses to the book on publication. The resistances as well as the enthusiasms of the first readers cast light on recent controversies, particularly concerning questions of design and descent.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter adopts a desktop review of diverse literature to understand the legal, cultural and religious underpinning of sustainable soil governance in Africa. The role of traditional knowledge systems in achieving sustainable soil governance in Africa will also be evaluated. The African Union recognises five geographic regions on the continent namely, North, South, West, East and Central. A sixth region consisting of people of African descent living outside the continent is also categorized but it is not materially relevant for the present analysis. The countries highlighted in this chapter are only used representatively of the entire continent to the extent possible. Africa is a large continent with diverse traditions, cultures and religions upon which the legal systems responsible for natural resources and environmental protection are anchored. It is therefore impossible to discuss any issue pertinent to the continent with homogeneity. Africa is no doubt one of the most resource-abundant continents. Natural resources such as gold, diamond, oil, natural gas, copper, uranium, among others are mined in different parts of the continent. Almost every country in Africa has a deposit of natural resources because the continent is endowed with about 97% of the world’s chromium, 90% of the world’s cobalt, 85% of the word’s platinum, 70% of the world’s cocoa, and 60% of the world’s coffee. Despite this abundance of natural resources, Africa is also among the poorest continents. One of the factors that has led to the continent’s extreme poverty levels is that the extraction of land or soil based natural resources is minimally utilised to the benefit of the African countries themselves. The process of natural resources extraction causes immense damage primarily to land and soil as well as the general environment. Against this background, this chapter assesses how culture, traditional norms and religion have shaped sustainable soil governance in Africa.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The sociological make-up of descent groups, both unilineal and non-unilineal, in Nusa Tenggara Timur is extraordinarily various, ranging from fairly straightforward patrilineal or matrilineal air angements, through a combination of patrilineal and matrilineal clans and lineages in a configuration of so-called double descent, toward more complex mixtures of unilineal principles and cognatic practices in places on Timor and the islands to the east of Timor. Scattered here and there are communities lacking unilineal descent groups of any kind (for a survey see R. H. Barnes 1980a).

Abstract (sommario):
A high fidelity engineering simulation model has been developed in FLIGHTLAB for a Sikorsky production helicopter to support future design modifications. The simulation model consists of major subsystems for main rotor, tail rotor, fuselage, empennage, landing gear, flight control system, and propulsion system. As the manufacturer of the aircraft, Sikorsky is able to provide a complete and validated set of model data required for a high quality engineering model. A large database of flight test records was used to conduct a comprehensive validation effort to ensure the model quality and fidelity. The trim tests include hover (both in and out-of-ground effect), lateral and longitudinal low-speed flight, level flight, vertical climb, forward climb and descent, and autorotation. The dynamic response tests include longitudinal, lateral, collective, and pedal step and doublet control responses in both hover and cruise. The model predictions satisfactorily correlate with the test data in most of the test cases covering a broad range of configurations and flight conditions. For the most challenging low-speed flight regime, a set of customized modeling enhancements were implemented via the "user-defined subsystems" in FLIGHTLAB. These enhancements allow for more sophisticated adjustment of some semi-empirical corrections to address certain model limitations in the main rotor ground effect, the main rotor inflow and interference, and the tail rotor inflow and interference. The model-data correlation in low-speed flight was significantly improved by implementing these model enhancements, resulting in a high fidelity engineering simulation model.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper explores minimax approximation methods as a tool for overcoming the double descent phenomenon in machine learning. Double descent is an important issue that arises when models begin to demonstrate improved results after overfitting. This phenomenon is observed when training complex models with a large number of parameters, which increases the risk of overfitting. Minimax approximation allows for the reduction of maximum losses that occur during training and stabilizes model results even in situations where data may be noisy or unpredictable. The paper describes the main strategies for minimizing maximum losses, optimizing model complexity, controlling overfitting, and implementing regularization. Special attention is given to identifying the optimal point of the second descent, which enhances the generalization capabilities of models and reduces their susceptibility to overfitting. The research shows that using minimax approximation can significantly improve the effectiveness of model training, especially in conditions where data has a high level of noise or when models have a large number of parameters. The obtained results may be beneficial for researchers and practitioners in the field of machine learning, as they demonstrate new approaches to improving overall model performance and enhancing their reliability.

Abstract (sommario):
Recent theoretical studies illustrated that kernel ridgeless regression can guarantee good generalization ability without an explicit regularization. In this paper, we investigate the statistical properties of ridgeless regression with random features and stochastic gradient descent. We explore the effect of factors in the stochastic gradient and random features, respectively. Specifically, random features error exhibits the double-descent curve. Motivated by the theoretical findings, we propose a tunable kernel algorithm that optimizes the spectral density of kernel during training. Our work bridges the interpolation theory and practical algorithm.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: High-dimensional learning models exhibit phase transitions, where small changes in model complexity, data size, or optimization dynamics lead to abrupt shifts in generalization, efficiency, and computational feasibility. Understanding these transitions is crucial for scaling modern machine learning algorithms and identifying critical thresholds in optimization and generalization performance. This research explores the role of high-dimensional probability, random matrix theory, and statistical physics in analyzing phase transitions in neural networks, kernel methods, and convex vs. non-convex optimization. Key focus areas include the computational-to-statistical gap, double descent phenomena, and spectral phase transitions that impact model efficiency. The study also investigates the scaling limits of iterative optimization methods, highlighting when gradient-based learning succeeds or fails in high-dimensional regimes. By integrating theoretical analysis and empirical validation, this report provides a structured framework for designing scalable, efficient, and robust AI systems that can adapt to phase transitions and scaling laws in high-dimensional learning. Keywords: Phase transitions in learning, high-dimensional probability, scaling laws, statistical physics in AI, random matrix theory, computational-to-statistical gap, neural network overparameterization, double descent phenomenon, convex vs. non-convex optimization, spectral phase transitions, kernel methods in high dimensions, scaling limits in deep learning, gradient-based optimization, iterative learning algorithms, eigenvalue distributions in machine learning, large-scale AI efficiency, threshold effects in generalization, scaling-aware machine learning, AI robustness in high dimensions.
