Abstract (sommario):
Enos John Nganani Mabuza's life and work is used as a case study to highlight the conceptual and methodological theories and challenges in academic biographical writing regarding history, memory and legacies. This thesis answers the question: Who was Mabuza and what is his place or relevance in South Africa's history? We over-simplify and stereotype people because it is convenient. We judge others but there is no saint without a past or a sinner without a future. Mabuza reconciled with the main liberation movements and moved from a maligned position on the political fringes to a respectable one within the emerging black economic elite. History, like reference systems and values is not calcified or static. It is prone to interpretation, adaptation, modification, invention, manipulation, decomposition and re-composition. Bourdieu's habitus-field analysis, theory or logic of practice, notions of capital (symbolic, political, social, cultural and economic) is used together with Latour's actor-network theory as the basis of analysis of the social contracts and trust bonds that Mabuza was able to create and which enabled him to navigate South Africa's socio-political and economic milieus during apartheid and the transition in the early 1990s. As people or actors, we believe in the mantra, nothing ventured, nothing gained. We exercise agency and take risks every day. We make choices and those choices have consequences. Mabuza's choices in the fields of education, politics and business had implications for how he is perceived or has been written into history. His choices put notions of identity, citizenship, power, legitimacy, ambition, elite accommodation, class, personal and professional networks, popular struggles, agency and structure under the spotlight. Mabuza's involvement in Bantustan politics, for instance, is contextualised in terms of a historical overview of the unpopular role played by traditional authorities in South Africa before and during colonialism and apartheid. His later foray into the world of business, however, was facilitated in part, by the personal and professional contacts that he made whilst he was in politics and the opportunities which opened up during the country's political transition. Mabuza adapted to changing circumstances and demonstrated a level of versatility which other Bantustan functionaries did not or could not exercise.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is a study of the theological views of a leading Victorian evangelical Anglican, Bishop John Charles Ryle. The main sources for the study are the bishop's extensive writings, which run to some seven thousand pages. Ryle's writings, for the most part, are occasional, pastoral and evangelistic, but they are suffused with theological concern, to the extent that a "systematic theology" can almost be compiled from them. Because of this, the method adopted in this work is to study Ryle's writings according to the traditional theological "loci," and to analyse his understanding of each of them. The study also seeks to make the analysis in the light of the historical theological and ecclesiastical background to his writings, particularly as Ryle frequently interacted with the various disparate elements that comprised the Victorian religious scene. The most extensive studies in this thesis relate to Ryle's exposition of the distinctive emphases of Evangelicalism, viz. the Inspiration and Authority of Scripture, human depravity, the Atonement, and the saving and sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit. Other important areas are the sacraments, in which Ryle engages in a strong polemic against the Anglo-Catholics of his day, and the doctrine of the Church. The thesis emphasises some characteristics of Ryle's theology, in particular its biblical basis, traditional orthodoxy, evangelicalism and moderate Calvinism. An interesting feature of Ryle's work is his polemic, which is directed against the newly emerging liberals, and the increasingly influential Anglo-Catholics. We also take note of Ryle's style of presentation, including his simplicity of expression, strong pastoral application, and his didactic method of inculcation by repetition. The thesis concludes with a resume of his work, a description of its character, together with a constructive critique and evaluation, and an indication of Ryle's importance for our own day.

The present work approaches the matter of the Law of Property and its social function according to John Rawls theory of justice, having the intention to understand what the role of the property is to the author, the ways of property which are considered fair by him and, if it answers to the principles of justice and property which fitted with its social purpose. For such, it deals with, firstly, in chapter 1, the conteporary conception of law of property, which is inserted within a more humanitary, cooperative pespective of society and reciprocity, longing to a socialeconomical harmony and the effectiviness of certain human necesseties to improve the pespective of the citizens lives. Carrying on in this chapter, it is studied Locke s concept of private property to demonstrate the points where his theory disagree with John Rawls theory, thus it brings more individual view of property and it adopts a restricted conception of this right. Locke defends the unlimited accumulation of wealth, being the property turned, only, to the individual growth of the owner and to benefit the business, and then not existing a distributive and cooperative justice. Macpherson criticizes Locke s theory since it is extremely individualist. Chapter 2 aims to analyse the main ideas of Rawls theory of justice, seaching for the main and fundamental concepts so that chapter 3 is well-understood. Rawls supports the distributive justice and encourages the social cooperation. For this author, the basic liberties are inegotiable and the object of his theory is the basic structure of the society as an equitative system of social cooperation among free and iqual citizens. In order to reach this, the individuals make an agreement under the veil of ignorance to formulate the principles of justice which will run the institutions of a democratic constitutional fair society. Chapter 3 fights against the matter of the law of property for this author, a big suppoter of the distributive justice and of the social cooperation, which understands the law of property as basic good, because it helps to accomplish the expectations of the citizens lives, and it must also be capatible to the other rights and liberties which belong to a social system to provide a honored life. Rawls thought was a target for criticism by Robert Nozick, whom rescued Locke s theory of appropriation, not agreeing with the notion of distributive justice and of social cooperation, counteracting in several points to the Rawls theory of justice. However, according to the philosophers Álvaro de Vita, Will Kimlicka and Van Parijs, the defense of John Rawls theory was made, because they support the thought of this author, abova all objections shown by Nozick. Thus, the right of property must have a social mean to promote certain basic needs of the individuals, and this is clear in Rawls work so that he believes in social cooperation, in the effectiviness of human dignity, of self-respect, of self-steem and of their own citizenship, through a distributive justice.
O presente trabalho aborda a questão do direito de propriedade e sua função social a partir da teoria da justiça de John Rawls, com a intenção de compreender qual o papel da propriedade para o autor, as formas de propriedade consideradas justas para ele e, se atende aos princípios da justiça a propriedade que cumpre com uma finalidade social. Para tanto, trata-se, primeiramente, no capítulo 1, a concepção contemporânea de direito de propriedade, o qual está inserido numa perspectiva mais humanitária, cooperativa, de sociabilidade e reciprocidade, buscando a harmonia econômico-social e a efetivação de certas necessidades humanas para melhorar as perspectivas de vida dos cidadãos. Dando continuidade a este capítulo, é estudado o conceito de propriedade privada de Locke, com a finalidade de demonstrar os pontos em que sua teoria contrapõe-se à teoria de John Rawls, pois traz uma visão mais individualista de propriedade e adota uma concepção restrita deste direito. Locke defende a acumulação ilimitada de riquezas, estando a propriedade voltada, unicamente, para o crescimento individual do proprietário e para beneficiar o comércio, inexistindo uma justiça distributiva e cooperativa. Macpherson critica a teoria de Locke por ser extremamente individualista. O capítulo 2 intenciona analisar as principais idéias da teoria da justiça de Rawls, buscando-se os conceitos principais e fundamentais para que o capítulo 3 seja mais bem compreendido. Rawls defende a justiça distributiva e incentiva a cooperação social. Para este autor, as liberdades básicas são inegociáveis e o objeto de sua teoria é a estrutura básica da sociedade como um sistema equitativo de cooperação social entre cidadãos livres e iguais. Para que isso seja alcançado, os indivíduos realizam um acordo, sob o véu da ignorância , para formular os princípios da justiça que regerão as instituições de uma sociedade constitucional democrática justa. O capítulo 3 enfrenta a questão do direito de propriedade para o autor, grande defensor da justiça distributiva e da cooperação social, que entende o direito de propriedade como um bem básico, pois auxilia nas realizações das expectativas de vida dos cidadãos, devendo ser compatível com os demais direitos e liberdades pertencentes a um sistema social para proporcionar uma vida digna. O pensamento de Rawls foi alvo de crítica de Robert Nozick, o qual resgatou a teoria da apropriação de Locke, não concordando com a noção de justiça distributiva e de cooperação social, contrapondo-se em inúmeros pontos à teoria da justiça ralwsiana. Mas, com base nos filósofos Álvaro de Vita, Will Kymlicka e Van Parijs foi realizada a defesa da teoria de John Rawls, pois defendem o pensamento deste autor, acima das objeções apresentadas por Nozick. Asim, o direito de propriedade deve ter uma finalidade social para promover certas necessidades básicas dos indivíduos, e isso, percebe-se na obra de Rawls, pois ele acredita na cooperação social, na efetivação da dignidade humana, do auto-respeito, da auto-estima e da própria cidadania, por meio de uma justiça distributiva.

Peintre neo-classique, directeur du south kensington museum puis de la national gallery, president de l'academie royale et enfin theoricien de l'esthetique, e. J. Poynter etait, du fait de la multiplicite de ses fonctions et de ses talents, un membre influent dans le milieu artistique de la seconde moitie du xixeme siecle. Mettant l'accent sur le role de la tradition, une bonne education et une predisposition naturelle pour les arts, ses preceptes se manifestent de facon tres claire dans sa propre peinture, ou rigueur intellectuelle et imagination prolifique se melent pour aboutir a une oeuvre d'art telle que les maitres italiens du quattrocento pouvaient la concevoir. Par ailleurs, il developpe l'idee de fonctionnalisme dans la beaute des objets, soulignant que cette derniere n'existe pas a l'etat brut, mais se faconne grace au travail conjugue du corps et de l'esprit. L'art est donc le receptable des qualites superieures de l'homme, et aussi le lien entre son caractere fini, parce qu'il est mortel, et infini du fait de la perennite de l'oeuvre creee
A neo-classical painter, director of the south kensington museum and then of the national gallery, president of the royam academy and art theorist, e. J. Poynter was, because of the multiplicity of his functions and gifts, an infleuntial member in the artistic field during the second half of the nineteenth century. Putting the emphasis on the part played by tradition, a good education and a natural bent towards arts, his precepts are made obvious in the pictures he painted thankd to the fine mingling of both his intellectual exactness and his bright imagination, and thay come to a masterpiece such as concieved by the italian masters of the quattrocento. In other respects, he develops the idea of functionalism in the beauty of objects and underlines that the latter does not exist as such but is shaped thanks to the combined efforts of the body and the mind. Thus, art is the repository of the noblest qualities of man, as well as the link between his finite character because he is mortal, and his infinite one because of the perenniality of the created work

Abstract (sommario):
John Wilbur Chapman was one of the most prominent clergymen, church leaders and revivalists of the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. More than sixty million people attended his evangelistic campaigns worldwide. A study of his contributions shows that he dominated the evangelical landscape of America from 1906 to 1918. His campaigns in Canada and his subsequent world tours helped his fame spread internationally. The objective of the dissertation was to find out whether Chapman’s contributions to Evangelicalism were as strong as indicated by his reputation during his day and if he should be remembered only as a secondary figure in revivalism. Historians have treated Chapman mostly as one of Dwight L. Moody’s assistants and as a lesser colleague to some of Moody’s lieutenants. If Chapman was significant, why did his name disappear from historical research and why was he relegated to a lesser position than his accomplishments deserved? What were Chapman’s contributions and how far did he advance revivalism? The research conducted in this dissertation represents a decade of analysing archival materials, primary sources and secondary sources, including journals and newspaper articles. What was discovered was that J. Wilbur Chapman was more significant to the history of Evangelicalism than previously noted. An investigation of his work has reinforced an understanding of the concepts and techniques of later nineteenth-century evangelism and it has also revealed his contributions to the trajectory of revivalism. The study of Chapman's work also illuminates aspects of holiness, dispensationalism and social welfare during the Victorian and post-Victorian era.

This work presents and discusses the extension of traditional Aristotelian syllogistics carried out by John Neville Keynes in the beginning of the twentieth century, through the introduction of a notation for negative terms into logical theory. The primary bibliography used was the fourth edition, dated 1906, of the Keynes‟s textbook on Logic Studies and Exercises in Formal Logic . Keynes has an extensional interpretation of the use of negative terms: they are understood as an extensional complement of the corresponding positive terms relative the universe of discourse; in this sense, his conception of the negation of terms obeys the Principle of Excluded Middle. The extension of traditional syllogistics by the addition of negative terms also leads to an extension of the number logical relations among the categorical propositions, as well as the number of valid immediate inferences. The Square of Oppositions is transformed into an Octagon of Oppositions, to which three new logical relations between the categorical propositions are added, namely, complementarity, sub-complementarity and contra-complementarity; the validity of these new logical relations does not require existential presupposition of any of the involved terms. Regarding immediate inferences, besides the conversion process, three new types of formal processes are obtained: obversion, contraposition (partial and total) and inversion (partial and total). To prove the validity of these formal processes, as well as of any syllogistic inference, Keynes lays out a diagrammatic method based on the well-known Euler method; in Keynes‟s method, however, negative terms are represented. In Keynes‟s version of Euler‟s diagrammatic method validity is understood as preservation of information: a collection of basic diagrams, corresponding to elementary information, is assigned to categorical propositions; and an inference is valid if, and only if, the diagrams assigned to the premises are also assigned to the conclusion.
Este trabalho apresenta e discute a ampliação da silogística tradicional aristotélica, realizada por John Neville Keynes no início do século XX, mediante a introdução de uma notação para termos negativos na teoria lógica. A bibliografia primária utilizada foi a quarta edição, datada de 1906, do manual de Lógica de Keynes Studies and Exercises in Formal Logic. Keynes tem uma interpretação extensional acerca do uso dos termos negativos: eles são entendidos como o complemento extensional do seu correspondente termo positivo em relação ao universo do discurso; neste sentido, a sua concepção da negação terminística obedece ao Princípio do Terceiro Excluído. A ampliação da silogística tradicional pelo acréscimo dos termos negativos leva, também, a uma ampliação do número de relações lógicas entre as proposições categóricas, assim como do número de inferências imediatas válidas. O Quadrado de Oposições é transformado em um Octógono de Oposições, no qual são acrescentadas três novas relações lógicas entre as proposições categóricas, a saber, a complementaridade, a subcomplementaridade, e a contracomplementaridade; a validade destas novas relações lógicas não exige o pressuposto existencial de nenhum dos termos envolvidos. Quanto às inferências imediatas, além do processo de conversão, três novos tipos destes processos formais são obtidos: a obversão, a contraposição (parcial e total) e a inversão (parcial e total). Para provar a validade destes processos formais, assim como de quaisquer inferências na silogística, Keynes apresenta um método diagramático desenvolvido a partir do conhecido método de Euler; no método de Keynes, porém, há a representação de termos negativos. Na versão de Keynes do método diagramático de Euler a validade é entendida como preservação de informação: uma coleção de diagramas básicos, correspondentes às informações elementares, é atribuída às proposições categóricas; e uma inferência é válida se, e somente se, os diagramas atribuídos às premissas também estão atribuídos à conclusão.

Is hyper-sexuality intrinsically linked with leadership? Should there be a new category of leaders to include sexual compulsion as part of successful dominance? What about the leadership of these Presidents compensated for their hyper-sexuality and allowed them to rise to the most powerful position in the world? What does it say about our society when we accept, elect, and idealize this behavior? Does sexual compulsion inhibit leaders or are their benefits such as infusing them with confidence and gratification? Is it actually condemnable at all? Optant pour une perspective esthetique, l'analyse tente de montrer que le recit dramatique est concu pour la scene, et que le texte de theatre est plein de "lieux ouverts" qui en "compromettent" le sens. Elle definit ainsi : 1)le principe de la "sanction dramatico-estheti-que" 2)les "masses critiques" du dialogue (avec l'exemple de on the shadow of the glen) 3) l'aspect polemique et dialectique de cette "sanction" 4)le "losange esthetique" 5)une "complicite" entre actant et signe. Avec the well of the saints, nous nous interrogeons sur la relation entre le sens dit "profond" et les "valeurs sceniques". A survey of trends of today's criticism, as well as a detailed ana-lysis of jm synge's plays (with a line-by-line commentary of riders to the sea) and using semiotics, as a stepping-stone this thesis aims at defining, for dra-ma, a "special methodology". The perspective is definitely an aesthetic one, and we try to show that the text of a play is riddled with "blank spaces" which suggest that there is no finite meaning in a play. We come to define 1) the principle of the "dramatic and aesthetic sanction" 2) the "critical masses" of dialogue (from the example of in the shadow of the glen 3) both the polemic and the dialectic aspect of that "sanction" 4) the "aes-thetic lozenge" 5) some "complicity" between "actants" and signs. With the well of the saints, we try to examine the relationship between what is known as "deep sense" and the text's "stage-elements? does the director of a production "play" on the "mediate textuel meaning " ?shouldn't critics try to open the "textual stage and link it up with the theatrical one, in order to assess the "immediate effect" of a performance? the conclusion of this thesis deals with the critical reception and the public reception -semiotic binarity and the "strry-effeet" and "charcater-effect", the "aesthetic binarity" of the familiar and the strange. L’œuvre du romancier sud-africain J. M. Coetzee met en scène plusieurs aspects qui caractérisent la condition post-coloniale. Coetzee complexifie les catégories du centre et de périphérie, d’identité et de différence en proposant une lecture radicalement différente de l’altérité. Sa critique du discours identitaire, sa remise en question du concept de représentation, l’indétermination générique qui caractérise certains de ses romans, le décentrement de la subjectivité et de l’écriture sont autant de tentatives pour proposer une lecture originale et singulière de l’altérité. Une lecture qui ne fait pas violence à l’autre, mais qui se fait violence pour accueillir et faire advenir une altérité radicale. Cette thèse démontre comment le choix d’une poétique de la complexité chez Coetzee vise à proposer une écriture et une lecture éthique de l’altérité
J. M. Coetzee’s œuvre stages many aspects of the post-colonial condition. Coetzee renders complex the categories of centre and periphery, identity and difference by proposing a radically different reading of alterity. His critique of identitarian discourse, his questioning of the concepts of representation, the decentered writing and subjectivity and the generic indeterminacy that characterise many of his novels are all means of proposing an original and inimitable reading of alterity. A reading that does justice instead of doing violence to the other. This thesis demonstrates how Coetzee’s choice of a poetics of complexity aims at proposing an ethical writing and reading of alterity

A stylistic analysis of John Stevens' second brass quintet, Fabrics, which discusses the composer's use of orchestration, harmonic language, rhythmic activity, melodic and formal considerations, and performance practice issues. Collaboration between composer and performer is investigated, particularly through Stevens' status as member of the Wisconsin Brass Quintet, the ensemble for which Fabrics was composed. Biographical information about Stevens and the Wisconsin Brass Quintet is provided, with appendices providing information regarding Stevens' activities as composer and performer and the activities of the Wisconsin Brass Quintet. Stevens was extensively interviewed as source material for this dissertation.

The utopian picture of America presented in the first two-thirds of St. John de Crevecoeur's Letters from an American Farmer (1782) contrasts sharply with the description of southern slavery and the effects of the American Revolution given in the final third of the book. Critics of Letters often account for this change in tone by attributing the utopian vision to the narrator, James. In this view, the progression of the book results either from James's disillusionment at the failure of his utopian hopes, or from a process of education whereby he alters that vision or unrealistically reaffirms it. However, evidence in the text suggests that James used a utopian vision supplied by his minister as a contrast to his own more realistic vision in order to educate his European correspondent. James provides examples that illustrate the elements of his utopian vision and the threats to it. Letters thus reveals a narrator who is neither naive nor unrealistic.

La définition du terme rétribution qui a été retenue est celle du Vocabulaire de théologie biblique, à savoir le fait de « recevoir récompense ou châtiment selon ce qu’on a fait ». L’observation de la trajectoire des personnages–clés et des peuples permet de constater une grande cohérence dans le traitement de la rétribution, cohérence qui fait ressortir le soubassement profondément chrétien de l’auteur. Sont placées au cœur de cette étude ses œuvres majeures, Le Silmarillion, Bilbo le Hobbit et Le Seigneur des Anneaux, ainsi que les deux contes Feuille, de Niggle et Smith de Grand Wootton
The object of this thesis is to identify a retributive logic in the works of J. R. R. Tolkien. The definition adopted for the concept of retribution is that found in the Vocabulaire de Théologie Biblique, i. E. « receiving a reward or a punishment according to what has been done ». The observation of the key-characters and peoples shows great coherence in the treatment of retribution and highlights Tolkien’s Christian faith. The investigation mainly focuses on The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and also on the two short stories Leaf by Niggle and Smith of Wootton Major

Frontière de la colonisation (« frontier ») ou derniers retranchements de l’apartheid avant sa chute (« border »), mais aussi lignes de démarcation sociales, économiques et géographiques : la frontière est omniprésente dans les romans de Mark Behr et de J. M. Coetzee, écho et reflet d’une société obsédée par la division qui, à l’image des Etats-Unis de F. J. Turner, se choisit une identité nationale sur le mode exclusif reposant sur un mythe de la frontière. Le miroir du texte se fait toutefois déformant ; l’écho du discours plurivoque du roman fait subir au discours dogmatique de l’idéologie des modulations qui en sapent les fondements, en réalité labiles. On s’intéressera ainsi à l’élaboration du mythe de la frontière et au panorama historique qu’en dressent les romans, qui font jouer les différents termes renvoyant à la frontière pour souligner l’échec d’une stratégie de confrontation permanente. L’autre de la frontière ne saurait être effacé du territoire ni du texte. Il réapparaît aussi dans le paysage : à un imaginaire du pays qui veut imposer le cadre de la carte ou du tableau, les romans opposent une esthétique du décentrement des points de vue visuel et narratif. Ils font apparaître l’instabilité du sujet lui-même, qui doit se confronter à la « wilderness », désert de la perdition et du salut, contradictions intérieures au sujet. L’acceptation de l’altérité pour éviter l’altération est aussi, enfin, la voie du salut pour l’écriture qui se fait jeu, translation et traduction permanentes entre langues et modes de représentation : invitation au dialogue continué dans la lecture et dans d’autres écritures pour une Afrique du Sud véritablement « nouvelle »
Outmost line of an advancing colonial frontier, last border of the apartheid regime under attack from all sides, multifarious lines drawn by the social, economic and geographic segregation: the notion of frontier lies at the core of Mark Behr’s and J. M. Coetzee’s novels. They echo the obsession for division in a society which borrowed from F. J. Turner’s ‘Frontier Theory’ to build an exclusive sense of national identity. The warped mirror of the text, however, gives a distorted image of this myth of the frontier. The fixed, but unstable, discourse of ideology is undermined by the plurivocal discourse of the novel. Playing on the ambivalences between ‘frontier’ and ‘border’, the novels show how the history of permanent confrontation reconstructed by the myth can only lead to failure. The people on the other side of the frontier cannot be erased from either history, territory, imagination or text. They also reappear in the landscape: whereas the myth uses frames, maps, or pictures to exert control, the varying visual and narrative points of view in the novels promote a constant decentring of aesthetic perspective, which actually stems from the instability of the eye/I itself. On the frontier, the subject is indeed confronted to the ‘wilderness’, an ambiguous space of danger and loss, which also holds the promise of salvation—a space which, in fact, lies within the self. To write is therefore to welcome alterity: the text becomes a continual play with metaphors and modes of expression, a permanent translation between spaces and languages—and an invitation to the reader to pursue this dialogue further and to other writers to give voice(s) to a really ‘new’ South Africa

La solitude serait matérialisée dans une rhétorique, avec son inventio, sa dispositio, son elocutio, ses figures et articulations, instruments d'une poétique du sujet. Il s'agit de voir ici comment le sujet organise un monde poétisé dont la première nécessité serait de rythmer cette ouverture de soi, quête de l'identité. What does solitude in works from different genres an times mean ? Philoctetes by Sophocles, Tristia by Ovid, Eloges by Saint-John Perse exemplify human process. As it is archetypal, adventurous solitude could be a creative experience and for the individual, it could be an exhortation to self-exigency, which builds up identity. Solitude could materialize in rhetoric, its inventio, dispositio and elocutio, its figure and links, which are the tools of the individual's fulfilment. The question is to realise how the individual organizes a poetized world whose first aim could be to rhythm the individual's “opening out”, in a word their quest for identity. From the initial crisis i-e solitude, the individual could exist only in this aesthetics

This study investigated the contributions of John Nelson Darby to selected institutions of contemporary theological higher education. A qualitative approach to the investigation was employed. Archival foraging occupied a greater part of the research data and yielded rich returns as evidenced in the literature review. Purposeful sampling was also utilized. The faculty and administration of three institutions, Moody Bible Institute, Dallas Theological Seminary, and Emmaus Bible College, were mailed questionnaires comprising 22 questions to ascertain their opinions of Darby's contributions to their institutions. Of the 22 questions, 21 were of a Likert type scale offering 5 options: Strongly agree, Agree, Not sure, Disagree, and Strongly disagree; and 1 open-ended question. A response rate of 45% (N=27) was achieved. All results were statistically significant at the p=.05 level utilizing chi-square goodness-of-fit tests.

Resumo: A tese apresentada discute o pensamento de John Locke, eminente pensador inglês do século XVII, que influência toda a modernidade desde o final do referido século. Hayek attribue à Mill la confusion relative au sens du terme "libéral". C'est en réalisant un certain nombre d'erreurs intellectuelles que Mill aurait perverti le libéralisme originel. En termes hayékiens, c'est en introduisant des idées "rationalistes" au sein du "vrai libéralisme" que Mill a contribué au déclin de ce dernier. Hayek présente son projet comme la restauration de la pureté du libéralisme originel de Hume et de Smith. Ce projet, qui est présenté dans la première partie de ce travail, est ensuite analysé à l'aide de l'étude de la lecture hayékienne de Mill. Au fil du temps, Hayek est de plus en plus critique à l'égard de Mill. L'étude de cette évolution permet d'identifier les éléments théoriques correspondant à la radicalisation de la pensée de Hayek, c'est à dire à une conception de plus ne plus étroite du "vrai libéralisme". Nous distinguons deux grands axes au sein de la critique hayékienne. Le premier axe porte sur la notion de justice sociale ; il est étudié dans la troisième partie. L'objectif est d'étudier les idées "rationalistes constructivistes" identifiées dans la première partie afin de comprendre en quoi ces idées représentent, selon Hayek, un danger pour la liberté.

Il s'agit d'une lecture de l'oeuvre de Keynes s'efforcant de prendre en compte et de mettre en lumière ses fondements epistémologiques et philosophiques. Au-delà des impasses auxquelles conduisent une interprétation de la théorie générale comme fondée sur l'empirisme ou le rationalisme, les influences de Moore et de Russell éclairent le sens du traité des probabilités. Avec sa conception des probabilités, le réalisme analytique de Keynes représente un apport majeur à la philosophie de la connaissance des auteurs précédents. C'est cette philosophie de la connaissance qui permet de comprendre la conception de Keynes de l'économie, comme science qui traite de l'organique et qui fait usage de modèles. La question est alors de comprendre le message commun à l'oeuvre et les rapports entre le traité de la monnaie et la théorie générale. Le traité de la monnaie apparait comme un projet non mené à son terme mais, dans le modèle que Keynes, esquisse le niveau de l'activité est déterminé par le volume de l'investissement. It is a reading of Keynes's work, attempting to take into account and throw light upon its epistemological and philosophical foundations. Beyond the dead-ends where the interpretation of the general theory as empirist or rationalist leads, the influences of both Moore and Russell enlighten the meaning of a treatise on probability. With his conception of probability, Keynes's analytical realism represents a chief contribution to these very authors' philosophy of knowledge. That philosophy of knowledge allows us to understand Keynes's conception of economics as a science which deals with organic and uses models. The issue is then to understand the message of the whole work and connections between a treatise on money and the general theory. A treatise on money appears as a scheme that has not been fully carried out. But, in the model Keynes outlines, the activity-level depends on the investment-volume. Consequently, the antithesis between a model presented in terms of periods and gravitation in a treatise on money, and a model based upon anticipations, which is the model of the general theory, seems of minor importance. Both converge on making more probable a proposition about economic reality
