Abstract (sommario):
Optimal growth and development in the first thousand days of life (1000 HPK) can be achieved by starting complementary feeding (CF) for infants aged 6-23 months to fulfill nutritional needs and prevent nutritional disorders such as stunting. CF noodle products with local food substitutions are cowpea and snakehead fish which are high in protein, soft textured, and without chemical additives for children aged 12-23 months. This study aimed to determine the effect of wheat substitution with cowpea and snakehead fish on the physical properties (water absorption, elasticity, color) in wet noodle CF. This research used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments namely F0 (0%), F1 (20%), F2 (40%), F3 (60%). The parameters analyzed included physical properties of water absorption, elasticity, and color properties (L, a, b). Data were analyzed using One Way ANOVA test and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) to know the differences in all samples. Statistical test results indicated a significant effect of substituting wheat with cowpea on elasticity and color (L*, a*, b*). The more composite flour added, the elasticity of the wet noodles decreased, and the L* (brightness) tended to be darker, the a* (redness) greener, and the b* (yellowness) yellower. Meanwhile, there was no significant effect on the water absorption of wet noodle CF. Increased substitution of cowpea and snakehead fish flour affected elasticity and color (L* darker, a* greener, b* yellower), although there was no significant effect on the water absorption of wet noodles.

Abstract (sommario):
We generalize the normalized constant elasticity of substitution (CES) production function by allowing the elasticity of substitution to vary isoelastically with (i) the relative factor share, (ii) the marginal rate of substitution, (iii) the capital–labor ratio, (iv) the capital share, (v) the capital’s rate of return, or (vi) the capital–output ratio. Ensuing isoelastic elasticity of substitution (IEES) functions have intuitively and analytically desirable properties, for example, self-duality. Empirically, for the post-war US economy we robustly reject the CES specification in favor of the IEES alternative. Assuming the IEES production structure we find that the capital–labor elasticity of substitution has remained around 0.8–0.9 from 1948 to the 1980s, followed by a period of secular decline.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper characterizes the elasticity of factor substitution in one-sector convex growth models with a general production function. It shows that an elasticity of substitution that is asymptotically greater than unity is a sufficient (but not a necessary) condition for the existence of a lower bound on the marginal product of capital, which in turn can lead to unbounded endogenous growth. Hence, an elasticity of substitution that eventually becomes greater than unity can counteract the role of diminishing returns to capital. This renders factor substitution a powerful engine of growth.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, we examine the influence of monetary policy on the speed of convergence in a standard monetary growth model à la Sidrauski allowing for differences in the elasticity of substitution between factors of production. The respective changes in the rate of convergence and its sensitivities to the central model parameters are derived both analytically and numerically. By normalizing the constant elasticity of substitution (CES) production functions both outside the steady state and within the steady state, it is possible to distinguish between an efficiency and a distribution effect of a change in the elasticity of substitution. We show that monetary policy is the more effective, the lower is the elasticity of substitution, and that the impact of monetary policy on the speed of convergence is mainly channeled via the efficiency effect.

Abstract (sommario):
We consider endogenous changes of inputs from labor to capital in the production of intermediate goods, i.e., a form of mechanization. We derive complementary relationships between capital accumulation and mechanization by assuming a Cobb–Douglas production function for the production of final goods from intermediate goods. A constant-elasticity-of-substitution production function in which the elasticity of substitution exceeds unity can be endogenously derived as the envelope of Cobb–Douglas production functions when the efficiency of inputs is assumed in a specific form. The difficulty of mechanization represents the elasticity of substitution.

Abstract (sommario):
<p>The common production functions include the Leontief production function, the Cobb-Douglas (C-D) production function, the constant elasticity of substitution (CES) production function, the variable elasticity of substitution (VES) production function and so on. With different elasticity of substitution of factor, the production functions have different ranges of applications. In the production functions, the C-D production function is used the most widely because of its simple form, while the CES production function and the VES production function have limitations in applications due to their complicated forms. However, the C-D production function has the elasticity of substitution of factors of 1, and the CES production function has the elasticity of substitution of factors which is not 1 but a constant, so the two production functions both have limitations in applications. The VES production function with the variable elasticity of substitution is more practical in some application cases. This paper studies the applications of the VES production function model and gives a method of calculating the contribution rates of economic growth factors scientifically. As for the parameter estimation of the model, this paper gives an improved Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA) to enhance the convergence rate and precision. Finally, the paper makes an empirical analysis on the contribution rates of economic growth factors of Shanghai City, China, using the method proposed.</p>

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation estimates the elasticity of intertemporal substitution (EIS) of consumption using the Nielsen Consumer Panel. The Nielsen Consumer Panel is built from transactional data that follows households in the United States and their grocery purchases from 2004 to 2014. Because of the transactional nature of the dataset, there is a low source of measurement error in consumption, and aggregation bias can be minimized. Due to changes in the economy during this timeframe, the data is examined for structural breaks. The data suggests evidence for two structural changes in the U.S. economy leading to three regimes. The first regime, 2004 to 2006, was a period of economic expansion, while the second regime, 2007 and 2008, was a period of recession. Lastly, during the third regime, 2009 to 2014, the economy exhibited quantitative easing. Chapter 1 introduces the EIS and provides an overview of the literature. In Chapter 2, the EIS is estimated for each regime using expected utility with linearized Epstein-Zin preferences and by the use of fixed effects and instrumental variables. In order to estimate the EIS, consumption is aggregated weekly, and consumption growth is measured over a four-week time period in order to match four-week Treasury bills. This study adds to the literature by examining individual EIS during different periods of economic activity. With a more complete dataset that has less measurement error and aggregation bias than the existing literature, this study gives evidence of a small and negative EIS during a period of expansion, a small and positive EIS during a period of recession, and a large and positive EIS during quantitative easing. Lastly, Chapter 3 extends Chapter 2 by assuming quantile utility preferences instead of the expected utility framework. The quantile EIS is estimated by the use of a smooth instrumental variables method of moments estimator. Estimates give evidence of heterogeneity of the EIS in the periods of expansion and quantitative easing. These quantile results can be used to inform the theory behind the EIS and quantile models of rational behavior.

Abstract (sommario):
Standard models used to analyze business-cycle fluctuations rely on the Cobb-Douglas production function. In their paper, Cantore et al. (2015) (CLPY in the following) analyze if and to what extent the use of a Constant Elasticity of Substitution (CES) production function improves a standard medium-size Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) model. Extending a model similar to Christiano et al. (2005) and Smets and Wouters (2007) with the CES production function, they show that allowing for non-unitary elasticity of substitution (i.e., non-Cobb-Douglas production function) between inputs has a significant improvement in terms of second moments and posterior marginal likelihood. Our research builds upon the results of CLPY and is carried out in two chapters, each inspecting the implications of CES production function on a different definition of investment; in particular, the first chapter considers investment in physical capital, the second investment in firm creation.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents a translog model designed to estimate the elasticity of substitution between capital, non-production workers, and production workers using U.S. manufacturing data for the period 1988 to 1997. The elasticity of substitution estimates derived from the translog model suggest that production workers and capital are substitutes, as well as non-production and production workers. Although the estimates do not provide conclusive evidence regarding the degree of substitutability between non-production workers and capital, they do indicate that the degree of substitutability between production workers and capital is greater than it is between non-production workers and capital.<br>Master of Arts

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis uses alternative approaches to the modelling of technology and preferences to examine several macroeconomic issues. The diverse explorations carried out in the thesis make a novel contribution to the macroeconomics literature by providing interesting insights into the underlying factors that determine the manner in which growth, inequality, and political economy outcomes evolve in an economy over time. The results show that the degree of substitutability between resources in an economy is a major determinant of long-run economic outcomes, and hence carry some important implications for government policies relating to economic growth and human capital accumulation.

Mao, Qi. "The elasticity of substitution for US energy price changes between 1947 and 2010." Thesis, Kingston University, 2017. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/41957/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Since energy price changes have been studies by much literature, this thesis tries to discuss it through the elasticity of substitution. More importantly, this thesis finds that the substitution effect itself cannot completely interpret the phenomenon of energy price changes. This is based on the results of the estimation of the AES, the MES and the CES, as well as some previous studies' results of negative substitution elasticities. This thesis adopts VECM, ADL and panel data as methodologies. Different data is also colelcted and analyzed. Most of the AES estimates are negative and the CES estimation shows many negative elasticities as well. The estimated elasticities from the MES and the Panel dta CES are positive. Out positive elasticities from the MES may are consistent with the previous literature that finds the MES estimation method is better than AES. The negative elasticities of susbtitution as the substitution effects are usually followed by income effects. Based on literature view, if income effects are involved in the energy price changes between energy exporting and importing countries, it may lead to new policy making and application. In addition, there are some other findings: (1) an application approach is used to test the cointegration when variables include I(0), I(1) and share variables. This approach is different from Pesaran, Shin and Smith's (2001) ARDL method which is involved I(0) and I(1) variables. However, in the application, the data being used covers share variables. Share variables sum to unity so they have collinearity. New procedures (ADL) are adopted to solve the problem of collinearity in econometric application. This then allows to analyze I(0), I(1) and share variables together in the model. This is one of our contributions in econometric VECM application. (2) By the literature review in Chapter 4, it's found that the elasticities of substitution vary from economies. Since some economies do not share free flow of capital, labor or energy, their substitution elasticities cannot be estimated as a whole. The different sustitution elasticities in each country show that, when selecting the data, we may refer to a region or a country with a common free flow market for capital, labor and energy. (3) Different data is used in the application. Previous literature uses the data of the UK or other countries to analyze the Allen's elasticity of substitution (AES), or the US data in the period different from that in this study, or uses the familiar data but in technology forecasting. Importantly, the empirical analysis uses the US data to test the Allen's elasticity of substitution (AES) and the constant elasticity of substitution (CES), in order to explore negative estimates of the substitution elasticity.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper reviews the status quo of the empirical and theoretical literature on the determinants of the elasticity of substitution between capital and labor. Our focus is on the two-input constant elasticity of substitution (CES) production function. By example of the U.S., we highlight the distinctive heterogeneity in empirical estimates of σ at both the aggregate and industrial level and discuss potential methodological explanations for this variation. The main part of this survey then focuses on the determinants of σ. We first review several approaches to the microfoundation of production functions, especially the CES production function. Second, we outline the construction of an aggregate elasticity of substitution (AES) in a multi-sectoral framework and investigate its dependence on underlying sectoral elasticities. Third, we discuss the influence of the institutional framework on the determination of σ. The concluding section of this review identifies a number of potential empirical and theoretical avenues for future research. Overall, we demonstrate that the effective elasticity of substitution (EES), which is typically estimated in empirical studies, is generally not an immutable deep parameter but depends on a multitude of technological, non-technological and institutional determinants.

Abstract (sommario):
Master of Science<br>Agricultural Economics<br>Jason S. Bergtold<br>The use of elasticities of substitution between inputs has become the standard method for addressing the effect of a change in the mix of input used for production from a technological or cost standpoint. (Chambers 1988) A researcher that wants to estimate this elasticity, or some other comparative static, typically would do so using parametric production or cost function (e.g. translog or normalized quadratic) with panel data. For a study with only cross-sectional data, the construction of such a function may be problematic. Using a dual approach, a nonparametric alternative in such a situation may be the use of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Cooper et al. (2000) provided a methodology for estimating elasticities of substitution for the technical production problem using DEA. To our knowledge, this has not been extended to the cost efficiency problem, which would be equivalent to estimating Allen partial or Morishima elasticities of substitution between inputs using a cost function (or cost minimization framework). The purpose of this thesis is to show how elasticities of substitution can be derived and estimated for the technical production and cost (overall economic) efficiency DEA under variable returns to scale. In addition, an empirical example using Kansas Farm Management Association (KFMA) data is presented to illustrate the estimation of these elasticities. The results showed that input substitutability is relatively limited at the enterprise level

Abstract (sommario):
This study aims to investigate currency substitution and financial dollarization in Turkey. The extend of dollarization in Turkey appears to be very high according to both the conventional currency substitution and the recently developed financial dollarization measures. This has serious policy implications as a source of financial fragility through currency/maturity mismatches and balance sheet effects. The empirical part of this study contained an investigation of the long run relationships between the variables in a system containing currency substitution ratio, expected exchange rate change and rates of return on domestic and foreign currency denominated assets. The results of the Johansen cointegration analysis based on quarterly data for the 1987-2004 period appeared not to be strongly supporting the General Portfolio Balance Model (GPBM). The theoretical part of this study suggests that the GPBM can be reduced to the Sequential Portfolio Balance Model (SPBM) under the uncovered interest parity (UIP) hypothesis. Consequently, the GPBM may be misleading under UIP. The Johansen cointegration results suggested the validity of the UIP for the Turkish data. The estimation of the SPBM suggested that there is a long-run relationship between currency substitution and expected exchange rate change in Turkey. The elasticity of currency substitution appeared to be high but consistent with those estimated for other high inflation developing countries. The results further supported the presence of a ratchet/hysteresis effect proxied by a trend variable. All these results are consistent with the argument that currency substitution and financial dollarization are important especially in high inflation countries.

Abstract (sommario):
This experimental work evaluates the relationship between compressive strength and modulus of Elasticity of self-consolidating High performance concrete (SCHPC) containing high volume of Groundnut Shell Ash (GSA) up to 40% substitution as SCM. A total of 210 specimens of the GSA blended SCHPCs comprising 105 cubes (100 x100 mm) and 105 cylinders (150x300 mm) were cured in water for 7,14,28 ,56, 92,120 and 180 days hydration periods and the compressive strength and Modulus of elasticity determined. The linear relationships were studied with regression analysis. The findings revealed that all the mixes met the Modulus of Elasticity values requirement of 18,000N/mm2 to 42,000N/mm2 and the compressive results show that three substitution levels of 0%, 10% and 20% attained the proposed design strength (40-130 Mpa) and also satisfied the requirement for self-consolidating and high strength concretes. In conclusion, 0%-20% GSA substitutions (SCHPCA0-SCHPCA20) indicated a strong linear relationship with regressions values obtained varies between 0.842 and 0.954 for the two variables. Addition of GSA as SCM has improved the mechanical properties of SCHPC and creates a strong relationship between the compressive strength and Modulus of Elasticity.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this research was to study the effect of fine dune sand on the mechanical performance of Eco-Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC). For that, the fine dune sand of the Western erg (Taghit -Algeria) was being like mineral addition to formulate the SCC, and a comparison was carried out on their effect on the properties of SCC. Our study also showed that the substitution of fine dune sand (DS) by cement in the composition of the SCC, contributes to a slight variation of workability in the fresh state parameters still remaining in the field of SCC required by the AFGC recommendations. The experimental results show that the compressive strengths and modulus of elasticity of SCC improved by substituting of 20% cement by DS.

Abstract (sommario):
This study presents experimentally the collective consequence of using nano silica (NS) on mechanical properties of tough concrete. NS is cast-off as partial cement substitution by 1,1.5,2 wt% . Mechanical properties of hardened concrete are assessed expending different mixtures between NS. Important enhancement in the mechanical properties of concrete is experiential with NS due to its high pozzolanic activity approving the creation of advanced quantity of C–S–H gel in the existence of nanoparticles. Employing 2 wt% NS due to to improves properties of hardened concrete in increasing compressive strength, splitting strength, modulus of elasticity and flexural strength compared to samples without either NS

Abstract (sommario):
This article presents the results of a research dealing with the use of construction and demolition waste - recycled concrete in the production of fresh concrete, as a partial substitute for natural aggregate. It describes the properties of concrete recyclate that is used for the proposed recipe of fresh concrete. The properties include the results of grain size analysis, bulk density and water absorption capacity. 2 recipes of fresh concrete were prepared for the research. Recipe 1 based on recycled concrete combined with natural aggregate fraction (fr.) 8/16 mm. Recipe 2 based on natural aggregate, which also served as the comparison recipe to demonstrate the effect of recycled concrete fr. 0/16 mm on the physical-mechanical and deformation properties of concrete. The presented results show that the substitution of natural aggregate fr. 0/16 mm with recycled concrete has caused: a reduction of cubic strength by about 12%, crushing strength of cylinders by about 7%, and static and dynamic modulus of elasticity values by about 22% and 25%.

Abstract (sommario):
The effect of using Portland cement, nano silica (NS) and /or micro silica on the mechanical and physical properties of concretes containing fine aggregate only is investigated. Two groups divided into five series each have been designed and tested. The first group was containing the nano-silica only, while the second group contained different ratios of nano silica and a constant content of 8 % of silica fume (SF) (by weight) as partial replacement of cement. Water cementations ratio (w/c) of all mixtures was constant and equal to 0.22. The cement content in all series was 800 kg/m3. Commercially available nano silica (NS) was used in the mixture for the partial substitution of cement at ratios of 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2 and 3% by weight. It was found that the addition of nano –silica is significantly enhance compressive, tensile and modulus of elasticity of concrete. From the test results obtained it has been noted that the mix containing 2 % possess significantly improved mechanical properties, furthermore, the group samples of concrete containing binary cementations nano-silica and silica fume showed better results than concrete containing nano silica only.

Abstract (sommario):
We use variation in marginal tax rates and in tax bracket thresholds at which they apply in order to identify the substitution and income effects of tax reforms. We use a triple-difference estimator that exploits variation from subnational tax reforms, for which behavioral responses to taxes are identified e ven i n t he p r esence o f unobservable shocks to the income distribution. While high-income taxpayers respond more to tax changes, our results suggest this reflects much more the income or salience effects of tax reforms, rather than inherent heterogeneity in substitution effects. We discuss the implications for optimal redistributive tax policies.

Abstract (sommario):
Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models have been widely used for quantitative analysis of global economic issues. However, CGE models are frequently criticized for resting on weak empirical foundations. This paper builds on recent work in macro-econometric estimation, developing an approach to parameter estimation for a widely employed global CGE model, the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) model. An approximate likelihood function is developed and the set of optimum elasticity values is obtained by maximizing this approximate likelihood function in the context of a back casting exercise. In addition, two statistical tests are performed. The first of these tests compares the standard GTAP elasticity vector with the estimated trade elasticity vector. It rejects the null hypothesis of equality between the two sets of trade elasticities. The second test examines the widely maintained hypothesis known as the “rule of two”, by which the elasticity of substitution across imports by sources is set equal to twice the elasticity of substitution between domestic goods and imports. We fail to reject this common rule of thumb. We conclude that there is much to be gained by nesting CGE models within an estimation framework as this opens the way for formal evaluation of model performance and parameterization.
