Abstract (sommario):

Purpose – In many European countries labor markets became more and more demand oriented. However, the average use of recruiting abroad is still low. From a firm perspective, recruiting abroad comes at substantial costs and risks. The purpose of this paper is to identify mechanisms leading to the use of recruiting from abroad. Design/methodology/approach – Effects are retrieved from simple OLS regressions as well as from demand-sided instrumental variable specifications applied to a large German establishment-level dataset. Findings – The share of foreign workers in the contemporary work force enhances recruiting abroad, which is in line with theoretical considerations that foreigners indicate of successful international assignments. The results also indicate that internationally operating businesses more likely recruit from abroad. Furthermore, the author finds that market forces are relevant for the strategy to recruit abroad. Both, the regional scarcity of labor and a high demand for skilled labor affect the employer’s decision to recruit abroad. Social implications – The results indicate that internationally oriented businesses more likely recruit abroad. Furthermore, labor market mechanisms, such as scarcities, are functional and foster the use of foreign labor markets. Originality/value – This study adds to the literature by providing first empirical evidence on recruiting abroad, which is the use of foreign labor markets.

Abstract (sommario):

The majority of empirical studies of tourism analysis use a static single equation approach to model the demand for tourism of one origin for one or more destination countries. The examination of such studies generally shows that the economic interpretation and policy implications drawn as conclusions are based on mis-specified models, invalid estimation and inference procedures, inconsistent estimates and poor forecasting performance. Static single equation models of tourism demand tend to neglect interdependencies among destinations, ignore nonstationarity, overlook dynamics and, generally, disregard economic theory. Empirical specifications constrained by these flaws are bound to generate biased and inconsistent estimates upon which no reliable economic analysis or policy implication can be based. In an analytical context that focuses on the UK tourism demand for France, Spain and Portugal in the period 1969-1997, the main objective of this thesis is to demonstrate that consistent elasticities' estimates and reliable forecasts can be obtained from empirical models which are based on the principles of economic theory, and specified and rigorously tested within the rules of sound econometric methodology. The alternative models estimated in chapters 4 to 7 include error-correction autoregressive distributed lag models (ARDL), static and dynamic almost ideal demands systems (AIDS) and cointegrated vector autoregressive models (VAR). The main findings that emerge from the study are as follow. The battery of diagnostic tests applied to the dynamic error-correction ARDL models provide sufficient evidence to classify them as statistically robust, structurally stable and well-defined specifications. The evidence obtained for the AIDS and VAR systems indicates them as data-coherent and theoretically-consistent models, complying with the utility maximisation hypotheses. The similarity, across models, of the estimates of the long-run structural parameters and the accuracy of the forecasts they provide further support the reliability of these models for explaining and predicting the UK tourism demand behaviour, in contrast to the static single equations estimated in chapter 3. The specifications of chapters 4 to 7 can easily be extended, without loss of generality, to more origins and destinations and can be adapted to alternative contexts such as the demand for specific regions within a country, specific resorts within a region or even specific types of tourism products such as accommodation or leisure facilities, within a local area.

Abstract (sommario):

Using a variety of techniques, this doctoral thesis seeks to estimate the demand for key utilities such as electricity and residential water supply in Ghana. This thesis comprises of four chapters that estimate demand for electricity and residential water supply in Ghana. Chapter one is a joint paper published in the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews journal with Justice Tei Mensah and George Marbuah as co-authors. Although we all worked together from the introduction to the end of the paper; my principal role was writing literature review, sections of the data and discussion. The key idea was to disaggregate the energy sector and individually estimate the demand for each type of energy in Ghana. Chapter two estimates household demand for electricity in Ghana. We use the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) to estimate the demand for a 24-hour electricity service among households in Ghana. In response to the current CVM debate, this study investigates critical issues such as hypothetical bias, WTA&WTP convergence/divergence, and scope sensitivity that can easily invalidate our estimates. Chapter three seeks to estimate demand for piped-water services in urban Ghana. The paper applies three different valuation methods to estimate demand, thus providing validity checks for our estimates using competing methods. Chapter four is a single authored paper published in Water Policy Journal. This chapter seeks to estimate demand for domestic water from an innovative borehole system in rural Ghana using stated and revealed preference approaches. First, the study investigates demand for domestic water supply from an innovative borehole system using the CVM. We further estimate demand for current service of domestic water supply in residences using the Hedonic Pricing Method (HPM). This is achieved through a survey from rural districts in the Greater Accra Region, Ghana. Interval regression and ordinary least squares (OLS) are applied to investigate the determinants of willingness-to-pay (WTP). The main findings of this thesis may be summarised as follows: 1. Our results show that energy prices, income, urbanization and economic structure are significant demand drivers of the different energy types in Ghana with varying estimated elasticities. We find that there is a high degree of responsiveness of electricity demand to income changes by mainly the industrial sector relative to households. 2. Households are willing to pay between 7% and 15% of their income to have a 24hour supply of electricity in the GAR of Ghana. However, our cost & benefit analysis show a net cost of GHS567.52million ($146.97million) per annum. 3. The average amount that a household is willing to pay per month for a reliable piped-water services is GHS 44.73 or US$14.27 (HPM), GHS 22.72 or US$7.25 (TCM) and GHS 47.80 or US$15.25 (CVM) respectively. These amounts are equivalent to 3%-8% of households’ income. We find evidence of a positive net benefit of GHS 486.78million (US$155,49million) per annum. 4. Finally, regarding water supplied from the innovative borehole system and current improved water services, we find evidence that monthly WTP values are GHS35.90 (US$11.45) and GHS17.59 (US$5.61) in the CVM and HPM, respectively. These values represent approximately 3%-6% of household monthly income which is consistent with earlier studies. By way of conclusion, the author follows these empirical findings and prescribe several policy recommendations to inform policy direction in the utility sector(s) in Ghana and other developing countries with similar characteristics.

Abstract (sommario):

The monograph attempts to identify and substantiate the content and complex of spelling teaching tools for younger schoolchildren with a pronounced general underdevelopment of speech with the simultaneous development of their academic independence. To solve the problem, both theoretical research methods (analysis of psychological and pedagogical literature, generalization of scientific data) and empirical (observation, conversation, testing, analysis of student activity products) were used. The theoretical basis of teaching and development of students with mild speech underdevelopment in inclusive education classes is information about the cognitive, regulatory and speech features of this category of children; ideas of the development of younger schoolchildren in the learning process; the provisions of linguistics and psycholinguistics on the structure of spelling skills and the patterns of its formation, including in children with speech pathologies. It can be in demand in the professional training of future primary school teachers, in the practice of primary school teachers of inclusive education and speech therapists who assist primary school students with speech underdevelopment in mastering the school curriculum.

This chapter examines the impact of legal status on versatility and efficiency in prostitution markets. Focusing on the massage-parlor sector of the prostitution market in the northwest of England, it considers heterogeneity in consumer preferences and whether there exists a perfectly competitive market model with homogeneous sellers. It first provides an overview of the economics of prostitution before discussing the role of variety seeking in the demand for prostitution services. Drawing on consumer-oriented data from massage parlors in the northwest of England, it argues that economies-of-scope conditions have failed to develop to satisfy demand for variety in the area. It also sees the predominant concentration of massage-parlor sex work in England to be of low quality, reflecting a declining influence of the traditional firm-based sex work there.

Air Transportation, which is a sector ever-increasing its volume and importance because of requiring infrastructural investments, providing fast and reliable transportation facilities, offering employment and its the positive effects on the other sector activities. The demand, for air transportation which is appeared in development goals of many countries and the development indicators of the World bank, is constituted one of the most important components. The aim of this study is estimated of the sensitivity to income and price, air transportation demand in Turkey. In this direction, it is estimated the price and income elasticities in the short and long term by the FMOLS and VEC method for the air passenger demand using the data of GSYH, flight ticket price index and the number of passengers in Turkey in the period of 2007Q1-2016Q1. The results obtained, consistent with expectations, are indicated that the price inelasticity of the air passenger demand in Turkey is high and according to the income elesticity parameter is luxury good.

This paper extends to different indicators of labor underutilization the Updated Okun Method (UOM) for estimation of potential output proposed in Fontanari et al (2020), which, from a demand-led growth perspective, regards potential output as an empirical approximation to full-employment output, as in A.M.Okun’s (1962) original method. Based on the apparent incapability of the official rate of unemployment to fully account for labor underutilization, in this paper we offer estimates of Okun’s law both with broad unemployment indicators and with an indicator of ‘standardized hours worked’ which we propose as a novel measure of the labor input. The paper reflects on the possible different empirical measures of full employment. The various measures of potential output that we extract from our analysis show greater output gaps than those produced by standard methods, thus highlighting a systematic tendency of the latter to underestimate potential output. Output gaps that underestimate the size of the output loss or that tend to close too soon during recovery, may produce a bias towards untimely restriction.

Abstract The debate about whether to reduce import barriers on fresh produce in order to decrease the cost of living and increase welfare or to continue protecting the local agricultural sector by imposing import duties on fresh vegetables and fruits has been part of the Israeli and the US political dialog. The alternative of building a strong local brand that will direct patriotic feelings to support of the agricultural sector has been previously discussed in the literature as a non-tax barrier to global competition. The motivation of consumers to pay more for local fresh fruits and vegetables are better quality, environmental concerns, altruism, and ethnocentrism. Local patriotic feelings are expected to be stronger among national-religious consumers and weaker among secular left wing voters. This project empirically analyzes consumers’ attitude toward local agricultural production, perceptions of the contribution of the agricultural sector to society and how these perceptions interact with patriotic beliefs and socio-political variables perhaps producing an ethnocentric preference for fruits and vegetables. This patriotic feeling may be contrasted with feelings toward rival (or even politically opposing) countries competing in the same markets. Thus geo-political landscape may help shape the consumer’s preferences and willingness to purchase particular products. Our empirical analysis is based on two surveys, one conducted among Israeli shoppers and one conducted among US households. We find strong influences of nationalism, patriotism and ethnocentrism on demand for produce in both samples. In the case of Israel this manifests itself as a significant discount demanded for countries in conflict with Israel (e.g., Syria or Palestine), with the discount demanded being related to the strength of the conflict. Moreover, the effect is larger for those who are either more religious, or those who identify with right leaning political parties. The results from the US are strikingly similar. For some countries the perception of conflict is dependent on political views (e.g., Mexico), while for others there is a more agreement (e.g., Russia). Despite a substantially different religious and political landscape, both right leaning political views and religiosity play strong roles in demand for foreign produce.

In this paper we investigate how the fiscal authorities, through tax policies or fiscal incentives, can play an important role in supporting digitalisation of the economy (digital transformation) to exploit its opportunities. Our approach is to track the influence of these policies indirectly through relevant determinants of internet adoption (connectivity and user enablers). Hence, we first establish empirically the influence of these enablers on internet use by estimating a reduced form equation of determinants of internet adoption (both demand- and supply-side factors). Then we assess the influence of a country’s fiscal policy stance on some of these enablers or determinants (direction and extent) throughout the internet value chain. Using these transmission mechanisms, we estimate the influence of the fiscal regime on digitalisation. We draw on our own empirical analysis and other relevant studies to support our recommendations to the fiscal authorities. Our findings emphasise the importance of trade-offs between short-term revenue objectives and the longer-term opportunity costs of higher revenue, enabled by the large positive externality effects of the sector, generating higher social returns than those accruing privately.

The original proposal has three main objectives: a conceptual framework on willingness to pay (WTP) for fruits and vegetables, the introduction of branding and sampling in fresh food, and empirical applications to the United States and Israel. We modified our research plan over time based on availability of data and emergence of new problems. We expanded the range of products to include poultry and the range of techniques to use real experiments as well as more traditional surveys. We expanded the range of problems to understand attitudes toward genetically modified (GM) food. There is a growing interest in introduction of marketing tools like demonstration sampling, money-back guarantees, labeling, and brands in agriculture. These marketing tools are important for enhancing demand for agricultural products and food safety. However, the methodology needed to assess the effectiveness of these tools and understand their performance in different agricultural sectors is limited. Our analysis demonstrated the importance of brands as a marketing tool in agriculture. In particular, we showed conceptually that strong brands can be substitutes for other marketing tools like sampling or demonstration. We were able to conduct real experiments for the demand for safe chicken and show that consumers are willing to pay significantly more for products branded as more safe. Yet, using experiments in Israel and the United States, we found that WTP for brands of fresh fruits and vegetables is smaller than in other product categories. Warning labels are a sort of negative branding. The GM-free labeling is particularly important since it serves as a trade barrier to U.S. crops exports. Our analysis of acceptance of GM products found that WTP for GM products in Israel and the United States depends on framing of information about the impact ofGM and the quantity of information disclosed. Finally, in analyzing the evolution of support for Proposition 37 that aimed to introduce mandatory labeling of GM in California, we found that support for mandatory labeling ofGM products is broad as long as it is not perceived to be costly. Our project demonstrates the feasibility of conducting real experiments to assess consumer demand in agriculture. When looking at interdisciplinary groups, one can design new products and assess the WTP for their characteristics. We also show that, while branding is a very strong marketing tool, its use in fresh fruit and vegetables is likely to be limited. However, brands can be important with processed food. Furthermore, we have proven that, while some consumers strongly object to GM products, most consumers in the United States and Israel would be willing to buy them for a discount, and some would pay extra if they are associated with improved characteristics. Finally, we expanded the notion of warning labels to calorie information and showed that the response to calorie information depends on gender, education, and how the information is presented.

Improvements in instructional coherence have been shown to have large impacts on student learning, yet analysis of such coherence, especially in developing countries and at a systems level, is rare. We use an established methodology, the Surveys of Enacted Curriculum (SEC), and apply it to a developing country context to systematically analyze and quantify the content and coherence of the primary curriculum standards, national examinations, and actual teaching delivered in the classroom in Uganda and Tanzania. We find high levels of incoherence across all three instructional components. In Uganda, for example, only four of the fourteen topics in the English curriculum standards appear on the primary leaving exam, and two of the highest-priority topics in the standards are completely omitted from the exams. In Tanzania, only three of fourteen English topics are covered on the exam, and all are assessed at the “memorization” level. Rather than aligning with either the curriculum standards or exams, teachers’ classroom instruction is poorly aligned with both. Teachers tend to cover broad swathes of content and levels of cognitive demand, unrelated to the structure of either the curriculum standards or exams. An exception is Uganda mathematics, for which standards, exams, and teacher instruction are all well aligned. By shedding light on alignment deficits in the two countries, these results draw attention to a policy area that has previously attracted little (if any) attention in many developing countries’ education policy reform efforts. In addition to providing empirical results for Uganda and Tanzania, this study provides a proof-of-concept for the use of the SEC methodology as a diagnostic tool in developing countries, helping education systems identify areas of instructional (in)coherence and informing efforts to improve coherence for learning.

Topicality of the material, highlighted in this article is stipulated by the need to ensure effectiveness of educational process while preparing mining engineers. System of competencies for future mining engineers, taken as basis for high school sectoral standard for Mining 6.050301 update is theoretically substantiated and developed. Sources of state-of-the-art foreign educational system and technologies as well as scientific research results of local teachers have been analyzed, enabling development of new sectoral standard. Switching to new high school competencies-based sectoral standards is the necessary step in high education reforming in Ukraine, while the application of competencies-based approach to high school sectoral standards development facilitates tuning of education towards labour market’s requirements and demands, further development of educational techniques and educational system as a whole. Objective of the article: to project system of competencies and to define components of environmental competencies for mining engineers. Methods: – theoretical: analysis, generalization, systematization of legislative framework, educational standards, Internet - sources in order to distinguish theoretical basis of research, develop system of competencies for future mining engineers. – Empirical – improvement of system of competencies for future mining engineers. Scientific novelty is represented with structured system, consisting of 49 competencies, comprising the core of new sectoral standard for mining engineers preparation; Practical importance of the outcomes is related to developments: separate constituents of high school draft sectoral standard for Mining engineers bachelors’ preparation 6.050301 Mining (system of social & personal, general scientific, tool-based, general professional and special professional competencies. Research outcomes can be used while developing educational qualification profile and training program for Mining bachelors 6.050301 education field, in course of geoinformational technologies review by ecology, land survey and geography bachelors.
