Abstract (sommario):
Various reasons caused the demand for tax practitioners to increase, creating a need for specialised tax education and training. Since the tax profession is not currently regulated in South Africa, educators receive little input from employers on their expectations regarding formal tax qualifications. This causes uncertainty as to whether or not employers are satisfied with tax education in South Africa. This article reports on the current and preferred composition of tax departments, considering South African employees qualifications. The article also highlights employers current views and preferences regarding theoretical knowledge and practical skills included in these qualifications. Any agreements between the employees current views and preferences are indicated. Data was gathered by using questionnaires and the population on which it was tested comprised partners of the tax departments of certain financial consulting firms. The results show that there is not a fundamental difference between the current and preferred composition of tax departments. There is also evidence that employers preferences regarding theoretical knowledge and practical skills differ from their current views. It is therefore recommended that tax education in South Africa is regulated to ensure that employers can provide input on the curricula included in tax qualifications.

Abstract (sommario):
The emphasis has been placed on the fact that the number of recent cases of violation of labor rights of employees working for employers being individuals has significantly increased, which, in turn, necessitates effective supervision and control in this area. Based on the analysis of scientific views, the author has provided own definition of supervision and control as special forms of protecting labor rights of employees working for employers being individuals. It has been emphasized that the control within the framework of the considered issues ensures observance of the law in the sphere of labor, allows to reveal and eliminate certain shortcomings in time, as well as to take measures to prosecute employers who have violated current labor legislation. Features of this scientific category have been outlined. It has been stated that the control and supervision activity acts as a kind of guarantee of the realization of the right of employees to fair and safe working conditions, proper equipment of workplaces and compliance with the law by employers while concluding an employment contract with an employee. It has been argued that the implementation of control and supervisory activities in the studied area relies on various public authorities, where their main functions should include the detection of violations of labor rights of employees by employers, development of propositions to prevent violations of labor laws, monitoring the compliance with regulations issued in regard to employer in the result of inspections by the competent authorities, development and approval of the annual plan for scheduled inspections; drawing up minutes on administrative offenses against employers who have violated labor legislation; organization and monitoring of the compliance with labor legislation, including the collection, processing and analysis of information, operation of an automated information system for control and supervision.

Abstract (sommario):
There are several variants and various modifications of forms of work outside the office. Some companies use, enable or even prefer working from home in the form of a home office. In practice, we often encounter different views on this form of work, both in terms of positive benefits and negatives and risks. In practice, there is probably no uniform view of this issue, both on the part of employers and management and employees. Working from home in the form of a home office shows certain specifics and places specific and different demands on both employees and employers compared to "traditional" work in the office or in another place designated by the employer to perform work. The problem may be not only the decision itself whether to allow and whether to use work from home for employees, but also the decision on which job positions and with what job description are suitable for the mentioned form of work performance. The place of work most likely has a significant effect on the motivation of employees and management. The question is whether and under what conditions positive motivation prevails, or negative motivation, i.e. demotivation. In the presented work, we focus on the advantages and disadvantages, i.e. the risks of the mentioned type of work, especially in the area of employee motivation. In this paper we summarize the development and current theoretical information on this issue and then compare it with current practice. In the following practical part, we will examine the perception of differences in employees, between working in the office and home office, focusing on the mentioned area of motivation. Keywords: Demotivation, Home Office, Leadership, Management, Motivation.

Abstract (sommario):
Satisfying the need for human resources in the organization, results from the employment plan. When it turns out that there is a vacancy in a particular position, either newly created or already existing, the recruitment procedure begins. A very important element in the recruitment of employees is the selection, which is understood as a series of actions taken to fill the vacant positions with suitable employees. The company can carry out the entire recruitment process on its own, by its Social Media in the Employee Recruitment Process own specialists, as well as may use the help of employment offices or personnel consulting. The current reality of the global economy gives many opportunities for both employees and employers. One of these opportunities is the recruitment through social media. Communication medium in the form of the Internet, defines new standards of information transfer. Candidates have the opportunity to exchange views about the company and the proposed position, while employers can learn through social networking sites something about potential candidates.

Decisions regarding curricular direction are often made by departmental committees comprised of faculty who are most closely associated with the curriculum. While knowledgeable about current direction, these faculty may not be positioned to accurately forecast future shifts in industry focus. By including employers, potential employers, alumni, students, and representatives from similar programs in the process, alternative views and opinions critical to the visioning process are generated. Penn State's recent efforts in program assessment will be outlined.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the increasing use of data monitoring of employees by companies. As companies gather data on employees’ keystrokes and mouse clicks, as well as data on employees’ movements and interactions during the work day, they have an opportunity to strengthen the relationship of trust between employer and employee or weaken it. This viewpoint attempts to lay out some opportunities to have a positive outcome in this changing relationship. Design/methodology/approach The viewpoint looks at current practices in the monitoring of employees through secondary research into published sources to arrive at some hypotheses about how companies could create value for employees with the data they are gathering. Findings The viewpoint concludes that the dangers of poisoning the employer/employee relationship through intrusive monitoring and abuse of the data collected are very real. However, there is also an opportunity to empower employees with the very data being gathered on their behaviors and activities. Research limitations/implications The findings are based largely on anecdotal insights and the views of individual corporate leaders and proponents of monitoring software. Primary research will be required to assess the actual opinions of employees about the monitoring software being used by their employers. Practical implications Those companies that embrace the empowerment of employees through the sharing of data being gathered and practice transparency about its gathering will gain competitive advantage as a favored employer. Originality/value Although there have been a significant number of articles describing the expansion in the digital monitoring of employees, the author is not aware of any discussion of the potential of this data gathering to produce positive results for employees.

Abstract (sommario):
The relevance of the study of issues related to improving the quality of education in current realities is not in doubt. One may note a wide range of opinions regarding the content and essence of this concept, its structure, ensuring the quality of the educational process, in particular, in educational institutions of higher education, and understanding of the quality of existing education by the educational process participants (teachers and students) as well as parties concerned (employers, parents, etc.). Improving the quality of education is a multifaceted and continuous process that requires careful attention from the scientific community. The authors consider the main definitions of the concept of quality of education and uncover its content. To study different views on the quality of contemporary education, several surveys of the main participants in the educational process, i.e. teachers and students, were conducted. The authors revealed the opinions of employers and graduates regarding the quality of domestic higher education and, based on these qualities, created a profile of contemporary graduates (young professionals) who have received a high-quality education. As a result of the conducted research, the conclusion is confirmed that quality is understood by each person according to their accumulated experience and the subjective idea of this category, and changes according to the requirements that are dictated by society and the state in a particular historical period, as well as depending on the conditions of the surrounding reality (a clear example is a current situation with coronavirus which shows that the main skills for employees are the skills and abilities to perform work remotely, which also become key ones when making a decision by the employer about hiring an employee).

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This paper aims to determine current views of educators and practitioners regarding forensic accounting education, given the recent dramatic growth in the number of colleges and universities offering such education. Design/methodology/approach Survey, with statistical analysis of responses. Findings Results find that while both groups agree the demand for forensic accounting services will increase in the near future and that they prefer a separate course or degree be offered at the graduate and undergraduate levels, there are several significant differences between the educators’ and practitioners’ opinions on forensic accounting content and preferred teaching techniques. Practitioners consider topics outside traditional accounting as more important to include in forensic accounting education, and more highly value teaching techniques that add an experiential learning component. Practical implications Results can be useful to educators who have not considered offering forensic accounting courses or who wish to refine or update their existing forensic accounting education. Students seeking a career in forensic accounting can also use these results to facilitate their course choices to develop skills that employers value. Social implications These results find that practitioners value some nontraditional accounting skills, such as in forensic technology and interviewing, more highly than academics, which suggests accounting educators may need to develop interdisciplinary approaches to forensic accounting education. Originality/value As the number of institutions offering forensic accounting education has dramatically increased, current views of forensic accounting educators and practitioners are needed.

Abstract (sommario):
This exploratory research aims to provide an overview of employees’ current views regarding their organisations, with a focus on evaluating their trust in their workplace. A quantitative approach was applied to a dataset collected from Japanese businesspeople. From the analysis, it was found that the respondents’ perspectives differed depending on three demographic variables: gender, education, and annual income. Descriptive analysis results indicate that males express more positivity and support for the organisational directions in the new lifestyle phase resulting from the COVID-19 impact, that more highly educated respondents are more positive than other cohorts, and that higher-income respondents are more positive than others. These findings imply that organisations need to design different communicative approaches with different employee groups if they are to establish sustainable relationships with employers and cope with the disruptive environment.

De, Abreu Tracy. "Perceptions of large South African companies on the skills of tax graduates". Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/36772.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Today‘s changing business environment versus the change in curricula creates a potential shortfall in the competencies gained by the students who complete their degree course against the expectations of prospective future employers. The universities however endeavour to teach a tax syllabus that will equip the students with sufficient information and skills to be able to provide tax compliance on a corporate and personal level without much learning subsequent to university level. To some it would appear that the dominant guideline for universities as to what level of knowledge is required of graduates, is what is considered by regulatory bodies to be sufficient. It would follow then, that future employers may require a more technical and detailed knowledge of tax for their type of business than what the graduate would have been taught as a result of a curricula suited to professional bodies. In addition to a potential disconnect in theoretical knowledge, the dynamic working environment requires graduates to be adaptable and maintain a skill set that will aid them more than their theoretical knowledge. Using a questionnaire, data was obtained from the senior personnel employed in the tax departments of the top 30 listed companies of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (―JSE‖) in South Africa. The results showed that there is a variation between the current views and preferences of employers in respect of the theoretical tax knowledge of certain topics listed in the study, as well as in all the types of practical skills listed in the study.

As the mean age of global population increases, life after retirement becomes an important issue. In Taiwan, the introduction of the Labor Pension Act fixed previous problems addressed in the Labor Standard Act, making the Act more suitable to the labors’ demands. However, due to fact that the Farmers Association is a party organization for the farmers, is deemed not suitable for the Labor Standard Act. Members of the Farmers’ Association are therefore protected by a complete different Act called the Farmers’ Association Management Act to protect their rights after retirement. This study will focus on views the members of the Farmers’ association have on the current retirement system, investigating preferences of the members based on their personal characteristics. The research will be conducted in the form of surveys, analyzed using statistical means. Evidences show that opinions on the retirement system vary depending on age, annual incomes, and monthly incomes. Members serving between 11 to 20 years, with a monthly income of approximately TWD$40, 000 to $50,000, have very different views on the current retirement system. In addition, the views on the introduction of portable account also be modified. People who served for a longer time will worry about their pension and are not supportive. Therefore, adjustments must be made on pension application systems and some key elements, to encourage members of the Farmers’ Association, so as to be more enthusiastic in their jobs, while also able to pass on their experiences to others, thus increasing the efficiency of the whole team.

Abstract (sommario):
The view that China has become increasingly assertive under President Xi Jinping is now a common trope in academic and media discourse. However, until the end of Xi Jinping’s first term in March 2018, China had been relatively restrained in its use of coercive economic measures. This is puzzling given the conventional belief among scholars and practitioners that sanctions are a middle ground between diplomatic and military/paramilitary action. Using a wide range of methods and data — including in-depth interviews with 76 current and former politicians, policy-makers, diplomats, and commercial actors across 12 countries and 16 cities — Sanctions with Chinese Characteristics: Rhetoric and Restraint in China’s Diplomacy examines the ways in which China had employed economic sanctions to further its political objectives, and the factors explaining China’s behaviour. This book provides a systematic investigation into the ways in which Chinese decisionmakers approached sanctions both at the United Nations Security Council and unilaterally, and shows how China’s longstanding sanctions rhetoric has had a constraining effect on its behaviour, resulting in its inability to employ sanctions in complete alignment with its immediate interests.

Abstract (sommario):
The development of workplace technology has tended to reflect the interests of employers in promoting profitability, whereas worker concerns have been acknowledged in legislation that restricts the most egregious of employer practices. This chapter explores that history and the current legal and regulatory framework, which is explicable with reference to resistance. However, it is suggested that we could also view technology in the workplace as potentially enabling of workers, enhancing their capabilities in overcoming disability, building voice, and accessing learning opportunities. Extending the agenda for regulation in this way has the potential to offer a more positive picture of possibilities in relation to technology in the workplace and more could yet be done to realize these.

Slingerland, Edward. Mind and Body in Early China. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190842307.001.0001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Drawing upon cutting-edge knowledge and techniques from the sciences and digital humanities, Mind and Body in Early China employs the lens of mind-body concepts to critique Orientalist accounts of early China. Views of China as the radical, “holistic” Other are unsupportable for a variety of reasons. The idea that the early Chinese saw no qualitative difference between mind and body (the “strong” holist view) has long been contradicted by traditional archaeological and qualitative textual evidence. New digital humanities methods, such as large-scale textual analysis, make this position even less tenable. Finally, a large body of empirical evidence suggests that “weak” mind-body dualism is a psychological universal, and that human sociality would be fundamentally impossible without it. More broadly, this book argues that the humanities need to move beyond social constructivist views of culture and embrace instead a view of human cognition and culture that integrates the sciences and the humanities. Methodologically, it attempts to broaden the scope of humanistic methodologies by employing team-based qualitative coding and computer-aided “distant reading” of texts, while also drawing upon current best understanding of human cognition to transform the basic interpretative starting point. It has implications for anyone interested in comparative religion, early China, cultural studies, digital humanities, or science-humanities integration.

Abstract (sommario):
Hedge funds represent discretionary pools of capital that have very flexible investment strategies. Some funds allocate capital to derivative-based strategies on a global basis, loosely referred to as global macro funds. These investments are typically high-level, directional views on exchange rates, volatility, interest rates and other macro-related factors. In short, this “go anywhere” strategy often uses futures, forwards, and options on equities as well as interest rates and currencies. The investment manager employs top-down investments by placing high-level bets at the country level as well as taking positions in stock, currency, and derivatives on particular countries based on economic views. Many global macro funds increasingly use systematic managed futures, although fewer funds follow a discretionary managed futures strategy.

Abstract (sommario):
Online panels (OPs) are an important form of web-based data collection, as illustrated by their widespread use. In the classical sense, a panel is a longitudinal study in which the same information is collected from the same individuals at different points in time. In contrast to that, an OP has come to denote a pool of registered people who have agreed to occasionally take part in web-based studies. Thus with OPs, the traditional understanding of a panel as a longitudinal study is broadened because an OP can be employed as a sampling source for both longitudinal and cross-sectional studies. This article gives an overview of the current state of use of OPs. It discusses what OPs are, what type of OPs there are, how OPs work from a technological point of view, and what their advantages and disadvantages are. The article reviews the current body of methodological findings on doing research with OPs. Based on this evidence, recommendations are given as to how the quality of data that are collected in OPs can be augmented.

Abstract (sommario):
This volume of the ‘Symposium Aristotelicum’ constitutes a running commentary of the first book of Aristotle’s Physics, a central treatise of the Aristotelian corpus that aims at knowledge of the principles of physical change; it establishes that there are such principles and determines what they are and how many. After a general introduction, the ten chapters of the volume, written by distinguished scholars of ancient philosophy, comment on the entirety of the Aristotelian text and deal in detail with the philosophical issues raised in it. Aristotle is here in dialogue with the divergent doctrines of earlier philosophers, namely with the Eleatics’ monism, with Anaxagoras’ theory of mixture, and finally with the Platonist dyadism that posits the two principles of Form and the Great and Small. He employs the critical examination of his predecessors’ views in order to present and formulate his own theory of the principles of natural things, which are fundamental for the entire Aristotelian study of the natural world: form, privation and the substratum that underlies them. Moreover, Aristotle provides us with his own solution to the problem about coming to be and passing away, by distinguishing between coming to be in actuality and in potentiality. The exhaustive analysis of the Aristotelian doctrines as well as the critical discussion of the prevailing current views on their interpretation make this volume an obligatory reference work for Aristotle studies.

Giunti, Marco. Computation, Dynamics, and Cognition. Oxford University Press, 1997. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195090093.001.0001.

Abstract (sommario):
Currently there is growing interest in the application of dynamical methods to the study of cognition. Computation, Dynamics, and Cognition investigates this convergence from a theoretical and philosophical perspective, generating a provocative new view of the aims and methods of cognitive science. Advancing the dynamical approach as the methodological frame best equipped to guide inquiry in the field's two main research programs--the symbolic and connectionist approaches--Marco Giunti engages a host of questions crucial not only to the science of cognition, but also to computation theory, dynamical systems theory, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science. In chapter one Giunti employs a dynamical viewpoint to explore foundational issues in computation theory. Using the concept of Turing computability, he precisely and originally defines the nature of a computational system, sharpening our understanding of computation theory and its applications. In chapter two he generalizes his definition of a computational system, arguing that the concept of Turing computability itself is relative to the kind of support on which Turing machine operate. Chapter three completes the book's conceptual foundation, discussing a form of scientific explanation for real dynamical systems that Giunti calls "Galilean explanation." The book's fourth and final chapter develops the methodological thesis that all cognitive systems are dynamical systems. On Giunti's view, a dynamical approach is likely to benefit even those scientific explanations of cognition which are based on symbolic models. Giunti concludes by proposing a new modeling practice for cognitive science, one based on "Galilean models" of cognitive systems. Innovative, lucidly-written, and broad-ranging in its analysis, Computation, Dynamics, and Cognition will interest philosophers of science and mind, as well as cognitive scientists, computer scientists, and theorists of dynamical systems. This book elaborates a comprehensive picture of the application of dynamical methods to the study of cognition. Giunti argues that both computational systems and connectionist networks are special types of dynamical systems. He shows how this dynamical approach can be applied to problems of cognition, information processing, consciousness, meaning, and the relation between body and mind.

Abstract (sommario):
These Guidelines are one of the results of the four-year research project “Open Online Learning for Digital and Networked Society” (2017-2021). The project objective was to enable university teachers to design open and online learning through open and online learning curriculum and environment applying learning analytics as a metacognitive tool and creating open and online learning assessment and recognition practices, responding to the needs of digital and networked society. The research of the project resulted in 10 scientific publications and 2 studies prepared by Vytautas Magnus university Institute of Innovative Studies research team in collaboration with their international research partners from Germany, Spain and Portugal. The final stage of the research attempted creating open and online learning assessment and recognition practices, responding to the learner needs in contemporary digital and networked society. The need for open learning recognition has been increasing during the recent decade while the developments of open learning related to the Covid 19 pandemics have dramatically increased the need for systematic and high-quality assessment and recognition of learning acquired online. The given time also relates to the increased need to offer micro-credentials to learners, as well as a rising need for universities to prepare for micro-credentialization and issue new digital credentials to learners who are regular students, as well as adult learners joining for single courses. The increased need of all labour - market participants for frequent and fast renewal of competences requires a well working and easy to use system of open learning assessment and recognition. For learners, it is critical that the micro-credentials are well linked to national and European qualification frameworks, as well as European digital credential infrastructures (e.g., Europass and similar). For employers, it is important to receive requested quality information that is encrypted in the metadata of the credential. While for universities, there is the need to properly prepare institutional digital infrastructure, organizational procedures, descriptions of open learning opportunities and virtual learning environments to share, import and export the meta-data easily and seamlessly through European Digital Hub service infrastructures, as well as ensure that academic and administrative staff has digital competencies to design, issue and recognise open learning through digital and micro-credentials. The first chapter of the Guidelines provides a background view of the European Qualification Framework and National Qualification frameworks for the further system of gaining, stacking and modelling further qualifications through open online learning. The second chapter suggests the review of current European policy papers and consultations on the establishment of micro-credentials in European higher education. The findings of the report of micro-credentials higher education consultation group “European Approach to Micro-credentials” is shortly introduced, as well as important policy discussions taking place. Responding to the Rome Bologna Comunique 2020, where the ministers responsible for higher education agreed to support lifelong learning through issuing micro-credentials, a joint endeavour of DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion and DG Research and Innovation resulted in one of the most important political documents highlighting the potential of micro-credentials towards economic, social and education innovations. The consultation group of experts from the Member States defined the approach to micro-credentials to facilitate their validation, recognition and portability, as well as to foster a larger uptake to support individual learning in any subject area and at any stage of life or career. The Consultation Group also suggested further urgent topics to be discussed, including the storage, data exchange, portability, and data standards of micro-credentials and proposed EU Standard of constitutive elements of micro-credentials. The third chapter is devoted to the institutional readiness to issue and to recognize digital and micro-credentials. Universities need strategic decisions and procedures ready to be enacted for assessment of open learning and issuing micro-credentials. The administrative and academic staff needs to be aware and confident to follow these procedures while keeping the quality assurance procedures in place, as well. The process needs to include increasing teacher awareness in the processes of open learning assessment and the role of micro-credentials for the competitiveness of lifelong learners in general. When the strategic documents and procedures to assess open learning are in place and the staff is ready and well aware of the processes, the description of the courses and the virtual learning environment needs to be prepared to provide the necessary metadata for the assessment of open learning and issuing of micro-credentials. Different innovation-driven projects offer solutions: OEPass developed a pilot Learning Passport, based on European Diploma Supplement, MicroHE developed a portal Credentify for displaying, verifying and sharing micro-credential data. Credentify platform is using Blockchain technology and is developed to comply with European Qualifications Framework. Institutions, willing to join Credentify platform, should make strategic discussions to apply micro-credential metadata standards. The ECCOE project building on outcomes of OEPass and MicroHE offers an all-encompassing set of quality descriptors for credentials and the descriptions of learning opportunities in higher education. The third chapter also describes the requirements for university structures to interact with the Europass digital credentials infrastructure. In 2020, European Commission launched a new Europass platform with Digital Credential Infrastructure in place. Higher education institutions issuing micro-credentials linked to Europass digital credentials infrastructure may offer added value for the learners and can increase reliability and fraud-resistant information for the employers. However, before using Europass Digital Credentials, universities should fulfil the necessary preconditions that include obtaining a qualified electronic seal, installing additional software and preparing the necessary data templates. Moreover, the virtual learning environment needs to be prepared to export learning outcomes to a digital credential, maintaining and securing learner authentication. Open learning opportunity descriptions also need to be adjusted to transfer and match information for the credential meta-data. The Fourth chapter illustrates how digital badges as a type of micro-credentials in open online learning assessment may be used in higher education to create added value for the learners and employers. An adequately provided metadata allows using digital badges as a valuable tool for recognition in all learning settings, including formal, non-formal and informal.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Punzi and Werner offer an incisive analysis of the role of social entrepreneurs in the so-called ‘period revolution.’ The authors explore not only the market strategies and social media messaging of social enterprises, but also how other activists in the menstrual equity movement question or support their work. Building on interviews with 35 social entrepreneurs, communication with current and former Femcare employees, and participant observation of menstrual activists, this study provides a 360-degree view of the surprising number of social entrepreneurs who have entered the menstrual products space, their efforts to innovate and disrupt the industry, and the opportunities and potential pitfalls they face.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractAs demonstrated in the previous chapters, land in Morocco is mainly used for farming and pastoral activities. These activities are more vulnerable to the consequences of increased precipitation and drought due to climate change. Various modern and traditional adaptation strategies – among which migration to urban centres or abroad – have been used to deal with environmental changes. This suggests that a large share of inhabitants are in some way aware of the changes in their natural environment and already familiar with adaptation strategies (Schilling et al. 2012; Mertz et al. 2009). However, in most studies, researchers focusing on this topic do not relate this to people’s overall views on environmental change and the adaptation strategies employed by the actors involved. When they do, they hardly focus on people living in the MENA region (Nielsen and D’haen 2014); West-Africa (Mertz et al. 2010, 2012; Afifi 2011; De Longueville et al. 2020); DR Congo (Bele et al. 2014; Few et al. 2017); and India (Howe et al. 2014). The only exception is the study on Morocco by Nguyen and Wodon (2014); Wodon et al. 2014). Hence, it is unclear how these environmental changes are actually perceived and how they influence the ways people view and respond to them, and (actively) develop adaptation strategies to deal with such changes (cf. Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-61390-7_6). This is especially important since perceptions of environmental changes and the risks associated with them vary across and within cultures (Vedwan 2006; Mertz et al. 2009, 2010; Leclerc et al. 2013). Furthermore, there is a perception bias with regard to the perceived environmental changes, as some types of changes, such as rainfall patterns, are more easily noted and compared to others, such as temperature changes (Howe et al. 2014; Few et al. 2017; De Longueville et al. 2020; Bele et al. 2014). Additionally, people mainly remark on changes when these apply to their livelihood activities (Bele et al. 2014; Howe et al. 2014; Wodon et al. 2014; De Longueville et al. 2020). In current research and policymaking, ongoing debates on environmental migration and displacement too frequently assume that everyone perceives environmental change in a similar fashion. This becomes problematic in debates on environmental migration or climate refugees when environmental changes are assumed to automatically result in some kind of (forced) migration, leaving little space for the views and agency of the people involved (Stern 2000; McLeman and Gemenne 2018; Khare and Khare 2006; Rigby 2016).

Abstract (sommario):
Western ideas about work have developed as macro and micro level changes continue to shape the social relations of work. As anywhere working developed as an alternative to traditional work arrangements in the 1990s, a system of checks and balances ensured the work practice delivered customer service and product quality. Western low-context work cultures situated the work practice as a logical development in the chronology of the social relations of work. With its tipping-point in the West reached, anywhere working received less attention in high-context work cultures. Specifically, this chapter investigates how the concept of “national culture” impacts thinking about anywhere working. In the high-context work cultures of East and South East Asia, employers, employees, and the stakeholders of organizations and governments have divergent views about the legitimacy of this work practice. The chapter discusses the influence of national culture on thinking about anywhere working in high-context work cultures, drawing on current data concerning anywhere working in selected Asian economies.

Abstract (sommario):
The ambition of this chapter is to pay some attention to more obvious, as well as more subtle, methods for organizations to become independent of the individual’s subjective knowledge, from the employees’ point of view. Terms such as ‘knowledge sharing’, ‘knowledge transfer’, and ‘learning for all’ are almost always seen as being positive for both employers and employees. However, this chapter will critically examines those terms. Three popular management ideas relating to knowledge and/or learning have been analysed from a ‘knowledge control’ perspective: knowledge management, organizational learning, and the learning organization. The main conclusion of this conceptual and elaborating chapter is that the more current and less academic ideas of the learning organization and knowledge management contain the same tools as the idea of ‘old’ organizational learning as regards gaining control over knowledge, but that these two ideas additionally contain other knowledge control measures, which are more refined, in the sense that they are less obvious as knowledge control measures. The idea of ‘new’ organizational learning, however, is less suited to knowledge control, since it implies that knowledge is not storable. In other words, the chapter’s contribution is an analysis of some of the most popular management ideas that deal with knowledge and/or learning relating to the organizational/employer independence of subjective knowledge, from the employees’ point of view, something which is rarely seen.

Abstract (sommario):
Welfare, in general, refers to both economic and social prosperity of individuals. From an economic point of view, individuals are very important actors of the labour market in the production process. This chapter focuses on employees and attempts to offer a valuable insight into the concept of welfare, its measurement, and its potential impact on the national product. Measuring welfare is not straightforward due to its multidimensional concept. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a way of measurement of employee welfare through an index that combines selected welfare components of employees. In the process of building that index, principal component analysis (PCA) was applied. Preserving variability and reducing dimensionality, this method is a very functional tool to represent multidimensional variables such as welfare in this case. Eurostat data for the period of 2008-2018 were utilized to explain the impact of employee welfare on the GDP per capita for 32 European countries. Findings revealed that employee welfare is a significant indicator of the national product.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter argues that current attempts in employment law to distinguish volunteers from employees on the basis of volunteer work’s civic, humanitarian, or charitable character are premised on overly narrow views of the moral significance of work. The chapter proposes that the law distinguish volunteer work from employment on the basis of the work’s merit inclusivity—inclusivity with respect to skill and ability. By offering people access to a broader range of social projects than their skills might offer in the labour market, merit inclusive volunteering opportunities can lessen the risk that skill and ability will confine people to particular social roles. Distinguishing volunteers from employees on the basis of merit inclusivity can thus create a more principled volunteer–employee legal boundary and can preserve legal space for work that lessens inegalitarian effects of the labour market on opportunities to participate in social life.

Abstract (sommario):
The philosophy of employee experience has been advocated as an effective tool to achieve the highest level of employee engagement in a business environment characterized by increased dynamism in workforce demography, psychography, competencies, and expectations. Employee experience encapsulates the overall journey of an employee in an organization from hire to exit, encompassing their experiences, what they feel, do, and achieve from the company. It is a comprehensive view of the relationship shared and experienced between the individual and the organization right from the application stage to stage they join the alumni group after their exit. The chapter explores this new philosophy in current human capital management practices that aims at revamping the HR practices and policies so as to create an experience that provides the highest level of engagement. Based on content analysis qualitative survey of various HR managers, opinions and new age thoughts in HRM practices has been highlighted in this chapter, giving an innovative dimension to HRM.

Abstract (sommario):
People have become accustomed to changes in their environment with every new generation of technology. It is through the shift in technology that people are seeing the world through new views and paradigms. We see these paradigm shifts in phases, such as when our parents went from listening to radio to watching television. We have seen the shift in the paradigm when our generation went from stand-alone personal computers to retrieving information off the Internet (Singh, 2003). But the latest shift in paradigm is the explosive developments of the mobile devices and the applications that are constantly being expanded upon to further the potential use of these devices from everyday personal needs to strategic business processes. People today are reeling from the benefits of mobile devices through increased productivity. The people that are benefiting the most are the mobile workers, especially the executives, middle management managers, and salespeople who are not bound by a desk or specific work locations (Cozza, 2005). Mobile devices have given added levels of service to people by allowing them to stay on top of customer support through improved customer care that has increased the company return on investment (Cozza, 2005). Employees can now access their email, contacts, corporate data and up to date meeting schedules by proving invaluable asset information to the corporate employee of today.

Abstract (sommario):
The change in business terrain is accelerated by globalization, which has opened many avenues of growth. To survive in this environment, the organization requires alignment of its strategic goals and available human resources. The need is to manage the performance of the employee, who is the most important resource of the organization. The focus has now shifted to the highly skilled workforce in order to leverage technology. This chapter highlights the studies conducted on the factors affecting the people in the workplace. While some researchers have defined what it means to be a skilled employee, other researchers have provided their views on the inequity, identity, compensation, meaning of work and international policy and approach of various countries for workers. This study also came across various aspects of migration of skilled workers studied by number of researchers. The current research provides solutions in the form of requisites to improve performance of skilled employees, which will be especially useful to multinational corporations operating in the hi-tech sector. The validity of the factors can be judged from the research conducted across the continents that includes major industrialized countries in the world. It looked into the work practices followed in these countries. The chapter provides research propositions based on the literature reviewed.

Abstract (sommario):
The present paper is founded on two pillars. Firstly, it is one of the current trends in education worldwide, i.e. to connect theory and practice. Secondly, it is the need to be interculturally competent speakers of a foreign language in today’s globalized world of massive migration flows and signs of increasing ethnocentrism. Based upon these two requirements, the ability to communicate in a FL effectively and interculturally appropriately in the tourism industry is a must, since being employed in whichever of its sectors means encountering other cultures on a daily basis. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to find out undergraduate tourism students’ opinion on the importance of intercultural communicative competences for their future profession as well as their self-assessment in the given field. The findings of the research, which are to be compared to employers’ needs, revealed that there is considerable difference between the respondents’ views on the significance of the investigated issues and their self-esteem.

Abstract (sommario):
The importance of information technology (IT) for modern business and, indeed, research in general cannot be questioned, as its sheer pervasiveness adequately attests. However, simplistic views of technological utopianism are now being offset by accounts of technological dystopianism. Clearly organizational management have wholeheartedly subscribed to an IT future as a staggering 41 percent of total capital expenditure in US organizations currently goes on IT. However, organizations face enormous difficulty in trying to achieve successful training programmes in the use of IT. This research study involved the construction and implementation of an IT training programme for mid-career employees in a large multinational organization. Davis (1989) identified two constructs as relevant to user acceptance of technology, namely ease of use (EOU) and perceived usefulness (PU). These constructs were operationalised into a set of principles to underpin the training programme which was delivered in two phases, each specifically addressing one of Davis’ constructs.

Abstract (sommario):
The internationalisation of studies is one of the most current trends in higher education, aimed at improving the quality of higher education and preparing students for the global labour market. Student mobility is one of the most common forms of internationalisation. As part of the given study, an interview with the groups of exchange and local students at a regional university has been conducted in order to clarify their views on the role of internationalisation in the educational process, general cultural literacy, promoting intercultural cooperation and building a global world view. The study took place in a bachelor's degree-level programme at a regional university in Latvia, using the qualitative method. A thematic analysis of the interviews was undertaken using an iterative, inductive approach to the generation of codes and themes. Coding was established using NVivo 12. In general, the internationalisation of studies (particularly student mobility) has been evaluated very positively by both local and exchange students. The advantages of internationalisation are associated with the possibility of obtaining specific cultural expertise and learning life-friendly soft skills. In the future, the respondents see themselves employed in international teams taking as an advantage the experience gained in the internationalisation process. In addition, exchange students have pointed out that the mobility experience specified in Curricula vitae could be considered by an employer as added value thus enhancing the opportunities to get a better job.

Abstract (sommario):
The objective of this work is to propose a methodology for assessing the fatigue life of dented pipelines according to the current high cycle fatigue theory. The proposed methodology employs S-N curves obtained from tensile test material properties and includes an expression to estimate stress concentration factors for spherical dents. Finite element analyses are carried out to determine stress concentration factors for different pipe and dent geometries. Using the numerical results, an expression to estimate stress concentration factors of dented pipelines is developed. Additionally, fatigue tests are conducted with the application of cyclic internal pressure on small-scale dented steel pipe models. Different pressure levels are employed, resulting in failures ranging from around 6000 to more than 106 cycles, enabling the determination of the endurance limit and of the finite life behavior of dented pipes. Furthermore, the Goodman and Gerber criteria to account for the mean stress are evaluated in view of the experimental results. The fatigue test results are used to validate the proposed assessment methodology for the analyzed conditions.

Abstract (sommario):
The vertical co-current downward air-water two-phase flow was studied under adiabatic condition. In view of studying the effect of flow area on interfacial structure and regime transition, round tubes of 25.4-mm ID and 50.8-mm ID were employed as test sections. The flow regime map was constructed for each test section by employing a newer approach. Unlike the conventional flow visualization method, the present approach minimizes the subjective judgment in determining the flow regimes. It was found that the flow regime in the co-current downward flow strongly depend on the channel size. The local two-phase flow parameters were acquired by the multi-sensor miniaturized conductivity probe in bubbly flow. They include: the local time-averaged void fraction, interfacial area concentration, bubble velocity and bubble Sauter mean diameter. The area-averaged data acquired by the impedance void meter were analyzed by the drift flux model. Three different distributions parameters were developed for the different ranges of non-dimensional superficial velocity, defined by the ration of total superficial velocity to the drift velocity. The new correlations can be applied to a co-current downward two-phase flow in a wide range of flow regime spanning from bubbly to annular flow.

The volumetric heat dissipated by computer equipment at each level of the package from the chip to the chassis is having a tremendous impact on the thermal management of computer equipment. Because of the consumer’s insatiable desire for increased performance the competitive pressures are driving the computer manufacturer to pack as much processor/memory performance within the smallest volume possible. The consumer views high performance in a compact package as a benefit. These market pressures seem to be in direct conflict with the desire to continue to provide air cooling solutions for the foreseeable future. Because of these trends in power and package design other cooling technologies beside air are now becoming viable techniques but each must be weighed with many other factors that influence the cooling technology selected. These factors will discussed along with two specific IBM server packages and their associated cooling technology employed. Finally a microprocessor liquid cooled minichannel heat sink will be described and its performance presented as applied to a current microprocessor (IBM Power4) chip.

Abstract (sommario):
Generating proper feeding currents for entraining prey is one of the important features in the grazing behavior of (∼1mm) copepods. These feeding currents vary with the copepod species, as well as with the species or strains and concentration of prey (∼10 μm) dinoflagellates. Calanoid copepods also hover for a while, while slowly sinking, and then intermittently jump to a different location. In our study, we employed high speed digital holographic cinematography to measure elements of the flow field around copepods in an environment seeded with dinoflagellates. In most cases, the flow field and feeding currents were characterized based on the trajectories of the dinoflagellates. However, in some of the tests we also added neutrally buoyant 20 μm particles as independent flow tracers. At low magnifications, we simultaneously recorded two perpendicular views to obtain the same spatial resolution in all directions. Data were recorded at varying magnifications and frame rates. In recent experiments, we exposed the copepods to different strains of the same dinoflagellate species that have varying levels of toxicity, and measured the resulting changes to the grazing behavior of the copepods. Here we present results from two of these experimental setups: Acartia tonsa with Karlodinium veneficum (non toxic strain) and Acartia tonsa in particle seeded flow. Issues such as swimming characteristics, feeding classification (raptorial vs. filter feeding approaches) and copepod response to different environmental settings were addressed.

Abstract (sommario):
In the current paper the oscillatory nature of nonsuspended vehicles is examined with special reference to skid steer vehicles. For this type of application the oscillations represent one of the main difficulties to be overcome in order to increase marching speed. The basic idea of the control strategy is to accelerate the vehicle when it is pitching forward and vice versa with a view to keep the derivative of the pitch angle substantially zero. Physically, the traction system is employed as the controlling system with the developed torque as the manipulated variable. An accelerometer provides the signal related to the controlled variable. The overall control strategy is evaluated by a scale model that is driven by means of two permanent magnet dc-motors, and then applied to a hydraulically driven skid steer loader.

Abstract (sommario):
" From the Executive Summary: ""The purpose of the World Leadership Survey (WLS) is to provide a window into how professionals, managers, and executives view their life within the organization. This view of the employee experience will help leaders of organizations understand what employees experience, and what the organization can do to improve commitment and reduce turnover. The good news for organizations in the United States and Canada (the sample for this report) is that respondents are mostly committed to their organizations, satisfied with their jobs and their pay, work more than the typical 40-hour workweek, and do not currently intend to leave their jobs. The professionals, managers, and executives surveyed feel supported by their organization and by their direct supervisor, and think that their organizations are economically stable. Unfortunately they also feel overloaded, with their work disproportionately interfering with the rest of life, and that there is a high level of political behavior within their organization. Both overload and overt political behavior can reduce individual and organizational effectiveness. This report describes the current employee experience, and what organizations can focus on to maintain and improve commitment and engagement."

Abstract (sommario):
Since the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) opened for signature in 1972, biology and other converging disciplines have advanced considerably. These changes could have profound implications for a science-based disarmament agreement like the BWC. To address changes in biology and biotechnology, BWC States Parties have established processes to review developments in science and technology (S&T), including annual expert meetings on this topic. However, shortcomings are evident in the current approaches and many BWC States Parties have expressed support for a more systematic review of science and technology under the Convention. This study seeks to inform discussions on establishing a dedicated and systematic S&T review process under the BWC through an examination of existing S&T review-type mechanisms employed in different regimes beyond the BWC, a survey of States Parties views on a possible review mechanism and a study of past and present discourse on this issue in the BWC. Based on the analysis conducted, this study also presents options for BWC States Parties to consider ahead of the Ninth BWC Review Conference.

Bao, Jieyi, Xiaoqiang Hu, Cheng Peng, Yi Jiang, Shuo Li e Tommy Nantung. Truck Traffic and Load Spectra of Indiana Roadways for the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide. Purdue University, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317227.

Abstract (sommario):
The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) has been employed for pavement design by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) since 2009 and has generated efficient pavement designs with a lower cost. It has been demonstrated that the success of MEPDG implementation depends largely on a high level of accuracy associated with the information supplied as design inputs. Vehicular traffic loading is one of the key factors that may cause not only pavement structural failures, such as fatigue cracking and rutting, but also functional surface distresses, including friction and smoothness. In particular, truck load spectra play a critical role in all aspects of the pavement structure design. Inaccurate traffic information will yield an incorrect estimate of pavement thickness, which can either make the pavement fail prematurely in the case of under-designed thickness or increase construction cost in the case of over-designed thickness. The primary objective of this study was to update the traffic design input module, and thus to improve the current INDOT pavement design procedures. Efforts were made to reclassify truck traffic categories to accurately account for the specific axle load spectra on two-lane roads with low truck traffic and interstate routes with very high truck traffic. The traffic input module was updated with the most recent data to better reflect the axle load spectra for pavement design. Vehicle platoons were analyzed to better understand the truck traffic characteristics. The unclassified vehicles by traffic recording devices were examined and analyzed to identify possible causes of the inaccurate data collection. Bus traffic in the Indiana urban areas was investigated to provide additional information for highway engineers with respect to city streets as well as highway sections passing through urban areas. New equivalent single axle load (ESAL) values were determined based on the updated traffic data. In addition, a truck traffic data repository and visualization model and a TABLEAU interactive visualization dashboard model were developed for easy access, view, storage, and analysis of MEPDG related traffic data.
