This essay locates the exhibition within the tradition of international exhibitions of the period 1850 to the inter-war twentieth century. It explores the tension in the 1938 Exhibition between the traditional view of Scotland as rural utopia and its current industrial ambitions as expressed in the modernist vocabulary of much of the exhibition’s architecture. It also notes the overarching discourse within which the 1938 Exhibition (and other national exhibitions) is constructed – imperialism.
