Le changement climatique et l'urbanisation accroissent la vulnérabilité des villes. La (ré)intégration de la nature peut atténuer ces effets en renforçant le bien-être à travers des mécanismes comme la biophilie, la restauration de l’attention, la réduction du stress, et la connexion à la nature. Cette thèse vise à confirmer les effets de la nature urbaine sur le bien-être, explorer les processus psychologiques associés, analyser les impacts psychophysiologiques, et évaluer l'influence des spécificités environnementales à travers trois études auprès de citadins. La première étude, avec 479 participants, montre que la qualité et la quantité perçues de nature urbaine augmentent les affects positifs, surtout chez ceux ayant une forte connexion à la nature. La deuxième étude, menée avec 104 participants en réalité virtuelle (RV) utilisant des vidéos à 360°, montre que des environnements plus naturels réduisent l’effort cognitif, comme le suggèrent les mouvements oculaires. La troisième étude, impliquant 83 participants en RV, compare un environnement urbain standard à une version enrichie en nature après une tâche stressante. Elle associe des mesures subjectives et objectives (variabilité de la fréquence cardiaque et conductance électrodermale) du stress, tout en mettant en lumière l'importance du sentiment de présence pour maximiser les bienfaits des expériences en RV. Les résultats montrent que la nature urbaine améliore le bien-être, bien que ses effets sur l’attention et le stress soient nuancés. La discussion met en avant l'importance de la nature pour atténuer les impacts du changement climatique et l’utilité de la RV dans la recherche en psychologie environnementale Climate change and urbanization increase the vulnerability of cities. The (re)integration of nature can mitigate these effects by enhancing well-being through mechanisms such as biophilia, attention restoration, stress reduction, and a sense of connectedness to nature. This thesis aims to confirm the effects of urban nature on well-being, explore the associated psychological processes, analyze psychophysiological impacts, and assess the influence of environmental specifics through three studies involving city dwellers. The first study, involving 479 participants, shows that perceived quality and quantity of urban nature increase positive affects, especially among those with a strong connectedness to nature. The second study, conducted with 104 participants using 360° virtual reality (VR) videos, reveals that more natural environments reduce cognitive effort, as indicated by eye movements. The third study, with 83 participants in VR, compares a standard urban environment to a nature-enriched version after a stressful task. It combines subjective and objective measures (heart rate variability and electrodermal conductance) of stress, highlighting the importance of the sense of presence to optimize the benefits of VR experiences. The results demonstrate that urban nature enhances well-being, although its effects on attention and stress are more nuanced. The discussion highlights the importance of nature in mitigating the impacts ofclimate change and the usefulness of VR in environmental psychology research

Abstract (sommario):

The story of how a particular place came to be is more than the knowledge of a chronology of events; it is intimately part of our experience of that place. By knowing even a little of the history of a place, our perception of that place is transformed. In Historical Ground, John Dixon Hunt uses the term historical ground to refer to the notion that memories, tales, myths, and historical artefacts adhere to a place. The question Hunt then asks is how an existing site, and its tales, may be told through the medium of architecture, or landscape architecture. The idea that each site accumulates histories which may be revealed through architecture, is the basis for my own investigation. In the context of the Cape Peninsula mountain range, I am interested in seeking out and revealing particular historical narratives through the medium of architectural intervention. This report traces the journey of my design research project from my broader interests in the history of the mountain range; through the clarification of my architectural intentions; to my initial siting and programming strategies; and finally to my first ideas about making architecture in this context. I would describe this process as one of walking, finding, linking, and ultimately responding. This report introduces several key elements which underpin my research project. These elements (or layers) are: mountain (my general site of inquiry); pathways (how movement is linked to memory and meaning); earth (a technical study of the encounter between earth and architecture); fire (and its effects on the landscape); water (a resource with a story); and the wall (an historical piece of infrastructure). Each of these elements guides the reader through my research process and highlights certain found histories and artefacts along the way. As each element is presented, my research hones in on one particular place in the landscape, which is ultimately the site of my design investigation. This site, with the addition of a final artefact (a found brief), becomes the site of an architectural proposition which seeks to engage and link all of these elements together.

Abstract (sommario):

Les travaux de cette thèse se situent dans le cadre de l'élargissement du périmètre des impacts estimés par le modèle inondation de la Caisse Centrale de Réassurance (CCR). Le premier chapitre nous a permis de comprendre les différents impacts d'une inondation, leurs interdépendances et d'en conclure une classification des impacts. A partir de cela, nous proposons un modèle global construit par chaînage de modélisation des impacts où les outputs des différents modèles servent d'inputs pour les modèles suivants. Cette démarche permettra d'avoir une répartition des impacts par poste et une compréhension des effets en cascade des dommages directs vers les effets macro-économiques. Le chapitre 2 s'intéresse à la modélisation des dommages aux véhicules sous le cahier des charges de CCR. Les différentes conditions à respecter sont : la modélisation pour le péril inondation seul et du risque automobile seul, la modélisation pour un événement particulier et pour la charge totale annuelle. L'étude de ce risque, nous a permis de décrire, d'implémenter, d'identifier les problèmes et possibles améliorations de différentes approches de modélisation, à savoir : - une régression linéaire, la méthodologie aujourd'hui utilisée par CCR, - une modélisation fréquence x sévérité associée à la théorie des valeurs extrêmes, très utilisée dans le monde de l'assurance, - une modélisation physique sur exposition, démarche déjà adoptée à CCR pour les dommages au bâti. Nous nous sommes donc appuyés sur le modèle d'aléa inondation CCR et avons développé les modules de vulnérabilité et de dommages propres à ce risque. CCR étant chargée de la gestion comptable et financière du Fonds National de Gestion des Risques en Agriculture pour le compte de l'Etat, les travaux se sont poursuivi, dans le chapitre 3, par la modélisation du risque agricole. A partir d'un état de l'art sur la modélisation des conséquences agricoles des inondations, une modélisation de ce risque est proposée et implémentée. Le modèle s'intègre dans la démarche de modélisation physique sur exposition développée à CCR. Le travail a porté sur le développement des modules de vulnérabilité et de dommages spécifiques à l'agriculture. Le modèle de vulnérabilité a été développé à partir du registre parcellaire graphique et le module de dommages a été développé à partir des courbes de dommages à l'agriculture développées par le groupe de travail national Analyse Multi-Critères inondation à travers les travaux de l'IRSTEA. Le modèle d'aléa utilisé est le modèle développé par CCR depuis 2003. Le dernier chapitre est pensé comme une base technique pour CCR afin de pouvoir continuer les travaux d'élargissement du périmètre des impacts modélisés. Tout d'abord, un état des lieux des travaux réalisés (risques automobile et agricole) et en cours (pertes d'exploitations consécutives à un dommage direct) est réalisé et replacé dans le contexte de la modélisation globale des impacts proposée à CCR. Pour les impacts non traités, nous présenterons les problématiques de modélisation, un court état de l'art et les conclusions que nous en avons tirées en terme de modé This research was conducted within the framework of the Caisse Centrale de Réassurance's (CCR) R&D objective - to widen the scope of impacts estimated by its flood impact model. In chapter one, we study the various impacts of a flood and their interdependencies in order to create a classification of impacts. This classification allows us to design the architecture of a global impact model built from linking specific impacts models where the outputs of one model are the inputs of the following one. This approach generates an estimation with a breakdown by type of impact. It also allows us to understand the domino effects from the direct damage to the macroeconomic impacts. In chapter two, we study models for car damages according to CCR's specifications. The requirements are: the model should be independent from other natural catastrophes and impacts estimations and it should be able to model both a specific event and the total annual load. Through this work we describe, implement, and identify issues with possible improvements of three modelling approaches: - a simple linear regression, CCR's presently used method, - a frequency x severity model associated to the extreme value theory, widely used in the insurance business sector, - a model that pairs a physical model with exposure through damage curves. CCR already uses this approach to estimate damage to buildings. Hence, we are using CCR's flood hazard model and develop an exposure model and a damage model specific to cars. CCR is in charge of the accounting management of the Agricultural National Risk Management Fund on behalf of the State. Hence, chapter three contains state of the art modeling solutions for this risk and description of the designed model and its implementation. A vulnerability model and a damage model specific to the agricultural risk are developed and paired with CCR's flood hazard model. The vulnerability model uses the Graphic Parcel Register database. The damage model is based on the damage curves developed by IRSTEA for the national think tank on flood cost-benefit analysis. Chapter four is a technical document that will allow CCR to continue the development of the global model. It presents a situational analysis of what has been done (cars and agricultural risks) and of ongoing works (business interruption due to direct damage). For the remaining impacts, it presents the modeling issues, a short research review and the conclusions reached in terms of modeling

Les reflux laryngo-pharyngés acides, très fréquents en période néonatale, sont la remontée du contenu gastrique jusqu'au niveau du pharynx. Le contact entre un liquide (ex : liquide gastrique acide) et le larynx déclenche chez un nouveau-né à terme et en santé des mécanismes de défense (toux, déglutition, réaction d'éveil) appelés chémoréflexes laryngés, dont l'objectif est d'empêcher l'aspiration dans la trachée. Malheureusement, chez certains nouveau-nés, le contact entre le liquide et la muqueuse laryngée déclenche des réflexes délétères comprenant des apnées, des bradycardies et désaturations. Ces réflexes délétères sont impliqués dans les apnées du prématuré, les malaises graves du nourrisson et probablement dans certains cas du syndrome de mort subite du nourrisson.Les observations cliniques suggèrent que certaines conditions néonatales, dont la prématurité et une exposition post-natale à la fumée secondaire, favorisent la survenue de ces réflexes délétères. Ainsi, mon projet de doctorat consiste à étudier l'influence de la prématurité et l'influence d'une exposition à la fumée secondaire sur les CRL chez l'agneau nouveau-né. L'influence de la prématurité a été effectuée en utilisant un modèle d'agneau prématuré à 132 jours de gestation (terme = 147 jours). L'influence d'une exposition à la fumée secondaire post-natale, a, quant à elle, été effectuée en utilisant un modèle d'agneau exposé à la fumée secondaire durant les 16 premiers jours de vie à raison de 20 cigarettes/jour. Dans chaque étude, les agneaux ont été instrumentés pour enregistrer l'activité du muscle constricteur du larynx (muscle thyroaryténoidien), l'électroencéphalogramme, la fréquence cardiaque, la respiration et la saturation. Un cathéter supra-glottique a été utilisé pour l'injection de 0.5 ml de différentes solutions (modèle de prématuré : injection de sérum physiologique, d'eau distillée et HCl, pH 2; modèle d'exposition à la fumée secondaire : injection de sérum physiologique, d'eau distillée, HCl pH 2, lait) durant les différents stades de conscience. Le modèle d'agneau prématuré a permis de démontrer qu'une stimulation laryngée soit par l'eau distillée ou HCl à 7 jour post-natal induit des apnées prolongées, des bradycardies et des désaturations, lesquels sont potentiellement dangereuses. À l'inverse, une stimulation laryngée à 14 jours post-natals n'induit pas d'évènement cardiorespiratoire cliniquement significatif. Le modèle d'exposition à la fumée secondaire a, quant à lui, permis de démontrer qu'une exposition post-natale à la fumée secondaire induit une inhibition cardiorespiratoire plus importante et diminue les mécanismes de protection suite à une stimulation laryngée. Par contre, aucune stimulation n'entraîne d'évènement pouvant mettre en péril la vie de l'agneau. En conclusion, la survenue de réflexe potentiellement dangereux suite à une stimulation laryngée semble survenir en présence de certaines conditions néonatales. La prématurité semble être une de ces conditions.Les évènements potentiellement dangereux observés chez les agneaux prématurés montrent que les CRL sont probablement impliqués dans la pathogénèse des apnées/bradycardies du prématuré, phénomène fréquemment retrouvés en clinique. Quant à l'exposition à la fumée secondaire, elle est une condition néonatale qui modifie les réflexes obtenus suite à une stimulation laryngée sans induire de réflexes potentiellement dangereux.Les modifications observées suggèrent fortement que la fumée secondaire est un facteur de risque des malaises inopinés du nouveau-né et du syndrome de mort subite du nourrisson.

Chez les mammifères, le système olfactif principal est fonctionnel dans le dernier tiers du stade gestationnel. Le fœtus est donc capable de détecter avec sensibilité, discriminer, et mémoriser les odorants présents dans le liquide amniotique dans lequel il baigne. Chez le rongeur, ces odorants mémorisés in utero sont fondamentaux pour la survie du nouveau-né à la naissance en lui permettant de s’orienter vers la mamelle et de déclencher la tétée. Par la suite, ces odorants vont guider le nouveau-né dans ses choix olfactifs et alimentaires et favoriser ses apprentissages ultérieurs. Or, on sait que l’alimentation de la mère fait varier les clés olfactives des fluides biologiques (liquide amniotique, lait) et donc modifie la nature des sources olfactives rencontrées par le fœtus, puis le nouveau-né dans la période périnatale. Dans le but d’évaluer l’impact d’une exposition odorante périnatale sur le fonctionnement et la maturation du système olfactif en relation avec le développement de préférences médiées par l’olfaction et la modulation du stress au moment du sevrage, nous avons mis en place un modèle d’exposition odorante périnatale via l’alimentation maternelle dans une lignée transgénique murine exprimant le récepteur olfactif I7 couplé à une protéine fluorescente, dont l’odorant préférentiel est l’heptanal. Après validation de la présence d’heptanal dans le liquide amniotique et le lait de ces souris par GC-MS-MS, nos résultats montrent que l’exposition périnatale à l’heptanal entraine une augmentation significative du nombre de glomérules I7 présents au niveau du bulbe olfactif à PN12 par rapport aux animaux contrôles sans modification notable de l’homéostasie tissulaire ou de la transcription du gène I7 au niveau de la muqueuse olfactive. Ce changement structural important au niveau des projections axonales du bulbe olfactif s’accompagne d’un faible effet sur le comportement olfactif des souriceaux dont les capacités de discrimination ne sont que très faiblement améliorées par rapport aux souriceaux non exposés. A PN21, l’effet de l’exposition odorante sur le nombre de glomérules I7 est atténué, mais reste significatif. A ce stade, les souriceaux odorisés montrent une attraction olfactive pour l’heptanal par rapport au groupe contrôle non exposé, bien que l’effet sur un choix entre aliment odorisé ou pas soit plus contrasté. D’un point de vue moléculaire, ces effets sont associés à une diminution de l’expression du récepteur I7, et de gènes de la signalisation neuronale pouvant traduire une modification de la dynamique cellulaire. Et comme le montrent les résultats obtenus en électro-olfactogramme à cet âge, la sensibilité de la muqueuse olfactive vis-à-vis de l’heptanal est diminuée alors qu’elle ne l’est pas pour d’autres composés odorants. Ces travaux montrent que l’exposition périnatale à un odorant s’accompagne d’effets précoces sur le système olfactif qui impactent son organisation et d’effets sur les choix olfactifs qui se renforcent au cours du développement. Enfin, l’effet d’une exposition périnatale à l’heptanal sur la réponse à des conditions stressantes après séparation maternelle au moment du sevrage a été évaluée en enregistrant des souriceaux CD1 élevés dans les mêmes conditions d’odorisation que les souriceaux mI7-GFP adoptés, en open-field odorisé ou non. Nous avons montré que la réaction de stress des souriceaux à PN21, exposés en périnatal à l’heptanal, dans l’open field, est atténuée lorsque l’heptanal est présent dans l’environnement, comparé à la réaction des souriceaux non exposés qui affichent un comportement d’anxiété. Dans l’ensemble, cette étude a donc permis de mettre en évidence les conséquences en terme d’effets comportementaux (préférences médiées par l’olfaction et diminution du stress), structuraux et moléculaires, d’une exposition odorante périnatale chez le jeune, à l’aide d’une lignée transgénique pour laquelle nous disposions de peu de données In mammals, the main olfactory system displays all the structural and functional characteristics at the last third of the gestational stage. Thus, the fetus is able to detect, to discriminate, but also to memorize the odorants present in the amniotic fluid in which it bathes. In the rodent, these odors memorized in utero are fundamental for the survival of the newborn at birth by allowing it to trend itself towards food sources. Afterwards, odorants are guiding the newborn to olfactory and food choices and are promoting subsequent learning. It is known that the mother's diet varies the olfactory keys of the biological fluids (amniotic fluid, milk) and thus modifies the nature of the olfactory sources encountered by the fetus and then the newborn in the perinatal period. The neuroanatomic and functional consequences of this impregnation are the subject of recent studies. The objective of this thesis was to characterize the effects of perinatal odor exposure on the maturation and functioning of the olfactory system in relation to the development of olfactory preferences and to a stressing challenge at weaning. For that, we set up a model of perinatal odor exposure through maternal feeding in the mI7-GFP murine transgenic strain expressing the olfactory receptor I7 coupled with the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). We evaluated the neuroanatomic, molecular and behavioral consequences on the pups before weaning, and their evolution over time by focusing our efforts on the postnatal stages 3 (PND3), PND12-14 and PND21. Due to the fragility of the transgenic strain, we worked on mI7-GFP mice pups crossfostered by CD1 mice mothers raised under the same conditions after having validated the presence of heptanal in the amniotic fluid of mI7-GFP mice and the milk of CD1 mice by GC-MSMS. We characterized the effects of perinatal odor exposure on the maturation and functioning of the olfactory system in relation to the olfactory preference until weaning (mI7-GFP mice pups under CD1 adoptive mothers) and on the stress reaction to maternal separation at weaning (CD1 mice pups under biological mother). Our results show that perinatal exposure to heptanal leads to a significant increase in the number of I7 glomeruli in the olfactory bulb (OB) associated to a slight modification of the tissue homeostasis in the olfactory mucosa (OM) and to subtle differencies in heptanal sensitivity and preferences, that are amplified at PND21. From a molecular point of view, these effects are associated to a down-regulation of the expression of the I7 receptor and genes of neuronal signaling and an odorantspecific decrease in EOG response which may highlight a modification of the cellular dynamics. Finally, the effect of perinatal exposure to heptanal on the response to stressing conditions after maternal separation was assessed by recording CD1 mice pups grown under the same conditions than fostered mi7 mice on odorized and non odorized open-field. We showed that the reaction of odorized mice in the open field at PND21 is attenuated when the odorant is present in the environment, compared to non odorized mice that display anxiety-like behavior. Overall, this study demonstrates the consequences of a perinatal odorant exposure in the young, in terms of behavior (olfactory preference and anxiety), structural and molecular plasticity of the olfactory system, on a transgenic strain for which we had little available data

La prise volontaire de nicotine augmente l'excitabilité de la voie ILCx-BNST, entraînant une hyperactivité des neurones DA de l’ATV. Dans une première partie, l'objectif était d’étudier les neuroadaptations de la voie ILCx-BNST induites par l'auto-administration intraveineuse (AAIV) de nicotine. Les récepteurs cannabinoides CB1 contrôlent les propriétés renforçantes de la nicotine. Par conséquent, nous avons examiné le rôle des récepteurs CB1 du BNST. Nous montrons que l'acquisition de l’AAIV de nicotine est associée à une facilitation persistante de l'induction d’une potentialisation à long terme (LTP) CB1-dépendantes des synapses ILCx-BNST. La stimulation électrique du ILCx favorise également la persistance du comportement de recherche de nicotine pendant les périodes où la drogue n'est pas disponible. En outre, en utilisant la pharmacologie intra-BNST, nous montrons que la stimulation des récepteurs CB1 du BNST au cours de l’acquisition de lAAIV augmente la sensibilité aux stimuli associés à la nicotine. L’idée qu’il existe un appétit incontrôlable pour les aliments palatables, en dépit des conséquences négatives. Dans une seconde partie, notre projet a porté sur le rôle des neurones dopaminergiques (DA) de l’ATV dans la perception d’un stimulus aversif chez l’animal exposé au sucrose. Nos résultats indiquent que le sucrose augmente l'activité spontanée des neurones DA de la VTA. En outre, si un choc électrique provoque une inhibition presque complète de l'activité de VTA neurones DA chez les rats témoins, le sucrose perturbe la signalisation d'un stimulus aversif, indépendamment de l’état calorique du rat Learning mechanisms associated with active responding for nicotine enhanced the excitability of the ILCx-BNST pathway. The objective of this project was to better understand the involvement of the ILCx-BNST pathway in nicotine self-administration. Since the endocannabinoid system controls nicotine reinforcement and nicotine-induced synaptic modifications, we examined the role of CB1 receptors in the BNST. We showed that acquisition of nicotine IVSA was associated with a persistent facilitation of LTP induction at ILCx-BNST synapses. Behaviorally, electrical stimulation temporarily increased excessive responding to nicotine when nicotine was not available. Moreover, using intra-BNST pharmacology, we revealed that stimulation of BNST CB1 receptors enhanced sensitivity to nicotine-paired cue. In contrast, after a prolonged history of nicotine intake, it blocked drug-seeking in a reinstatement model of relapse. Drug addiction is partly due to the inability to stop using despite negative consequences. The hypothesis that palatable food induces similar uncontrolled consumption is becoming more widespread. As drug addiction is known to increases activity of VTA DA neurons, we aimed to examine whether exposure to sucrose would induce similar neuronal modifications and impair the capacity to respond to an aversive stimulus. We found that sucrose enhanced spontaneous activity of DA VTA neurons. In addition, while a footshock caused a nearly complete inhibition of activity of VTA DA neurons in control rats, sucrose disrupted signaling of an aversive stimulus. These modifications were independent from the caloric state of the rats

Disposer de marqueurs pour l’étude de l’autisme permettrait d’améliorer la compréhension de la physiopathologie, de compléter les arguments cliniques diagnostiques et de proposer des voies de recherche thérapeutiques ou préventives. Notre hypothèse est que certaines modifications du système sérotoninergique peuvent être des marqueurs potentiels de l’autisme. Pour tester cette hypothèse, nous avons eu recours à deux modèles : la plaquette sanguine humaine et un modèle animal, le rat exposé en prénatal à l’acide valproïque. Nous avons montré : - que le taux de sérotonine intraplaquettaire et la densité de transporteurs de la sérotonine peuvent être analysés chez l’homme. Ces paramètres ne diffèrent pas entre les groupes de témoins, autistes et apparentés du premier degré, - que le taux de sérotonine est abaissé de 46% dans l’hippocampe des rats exposés à l’acide valproïque, sans modification de la densité de transporteurs. Ces études renforcent l’intérêt de réaliser, chez des sujets avec autisme, des explorations centrales de ces potentiels marqueurs sérotoninergiques, et notamment à l’aide d’outils d’imagerie moléculaire Development of markers of pathogenesis for autism would improve understanding of the pathophysiology, would complete clinical arguments for diagnosis and would propose preventive or therapeutic research pathways. Our hypothesis is that modifications to the serotonergic system may be potential markers for autism. To test this hypothesis, we used two study models : the human blood platelet and an animal model, rats prenatally exposed to valproic acid. We have shown that: - platelet serotonin levels and serotonin transporters density may be jointly tested in humans. These parameters do not significantly differ between groups of controls, patients with autism and first-degree related, - serotonin levels were decreased by 46% in the hippocampus of rats exposed to valproic acid, and no significant modification was observed in serotonin transporters density. These results reinforce the interest of central explorations.These studies reinforce the interest of central exploration of serotonergic potential markers in patient with autism and especially with molecular imaging tools

Contexte : Les phtalates et les phénols sont des perturbateurs endocriniens. Les données concernant leurs effets sur la croissance fœtale et durant l'enfance sont limitées et suggèrent un effet dépendant du sexe de certains phénols sur le poids de naissance. Une des limites de ces études est l'estimation de l'exposition, basée sur la mesure de leurs concentrations dans un petit nombre d'échantillons d'urine maternelle. En raison de la faible persistance de ces composés chimiques dans l'organisme, les concentrations urinaires varient dans le temps. Les concentrations dosées dans d'autres matrices comme le liquide amniotique pourraient être pertinentes pour estimer l'exposition fœtale.Objectifs : Les objectifs de la thèse étaient : 1) d'étudier les impacts potentiels de l'exposition prénatale aux phénols et aux phtalates sur la croissance du fœtus et de l'enfant ; 2) de caractériser la variabilité des concentrations urinaires de phénols au long de la grossesse et de comparer les concentrations de phénols dosées dans le liquide amniotique et l'urine maternelle recueillis le même jour ; 3) de caractériser le biais et l'impact sur la puissance statistique de l'utilisation d'un faible nombre d'échantillons urinaires pour estimer les expositions. Méthodes : Les associations entre les phénols, les phtalates et la croissance ont été étudiées parmi un sous-effectif de la cohorte mère-enfant EDEN ayant accouché de garçons (n =520). La croissance fœtale a été estimée à l'aide d'échographies réalisées pendant la grossesse et de mesures à la naissance. La croissance postnatale a été modélisée à partir de mesures répétées normalisées, réalisées entre la naissance et 3 ans. Les biomarqueurs d'exposition aux phtalates et phénols ont été dosés dans les urines maternelles recueillies une fois pendant la grossesse. La variabilité des concentrations urinaires de phénols et la correspondance avec les concentrations mesurées dans le liquide amniotique ont été étudiées chez 71 femmes enceintes recevant une amniocentèse au centre médical Mount Sinaï (NY, États-Unis). Un échantillon d'urine maternelle a été recueilli le jour de l'amniocentèse, et à deux autres reprises pendant la grossesse. L'étude concernant les biais est basée sur des données simulées. Résultats : Les concentrations de triclosan étaient négativement associées à tous les paramètres de croissance mesurés à la troisième échographie (p ≤ 0,16) et avec la périmètre crânien à la naissance (β = - 1,4 mm, IC 95%; -2.8; 0.0). Les parabènes étaient associés positivement avec le poids à la naissance (p < 0,05). Le méthyle et propyle parabènes étaient aussi positivement associés au poids et à la circonférence abdominale à 3 ans (p-valeurs comprises entre 0,02 et 0,14). En ce qui concerne la variabilité des concentrations urinaires pendant la grossesse, les coefficients de corrélation intra-classe (ICC) variaient entre 0,48 et 0,62 pour l'ensemble des phénols sauf le bisphénol A (ICC = 0,11). Seuls la benzophénone-3 et le propyle parabène ont été détectés dans au moins 50 % des échantillons de liquide amniotique. Pour ces composés les concentrations dosées dans l'urine maternelle et le liquide amniotique, recueillis le même jour, étaient positivement associés. Dans le cadre d'une simulation, nous avons estimé que 5 échantillons d’urine étaient nécessaires pour estimer correctement l’exposition aux produits chimiques ayant un ICC de 0,6, tandis que pour des produits chimiques avec un ICC de 0,15, environ 25 échantillons étaient nécessaires.Conclusion : Un seul échantillon d'urine était disponible pour évaluer les expositions des femmes de la cohorte EDEN et nos résultats peuvent être affectés d'un biais résultant d'erreurs de classification des expositions, notamment pour le bisphenol A pour lequel nous avons observé une variabilité importante des concentrations. Because of their low persistence in the organisms and the likely episodic nature of the exposures, urinary concentrations of these chemicals are likely to vary. Chemical concentrations measured in alternative matrix, such as amniotic fluid, might be a relevant dosimeter of fetal exposure.Objectives: Objectives of the thesis were: to study the potential effects of prenatal exposures to phenols and phthalates on pre- and early post-natal growth; to characterize variability in maternal urine concentrations of phenols throughout pregnancy and to compare phenol concentrations in amniotic fluid to those measured in maternal urine collected same day; to characterize the impact of increasing the number of measurements to estimate exposure on bias and statistical power of epidemiological studies.Methods: Associations between phenols, phthalates and growth were studied among a subsample of pregnant women of the French EDEN cohort delivered boys (n =520). We measured fetal growth with ultrasound (three times during pregnancy) and birth measurements. We used standardized measures acquired between birth and 3 years of age to model postnatal growth. We measured biomarkers of phthalates and phenols in maternal urines collected once during pregnancy: 191 women were assessed in 2008 and 410 other women in 2012 (ntot = 601). Variability in phenol urine concentrations and relationship between concentrations measured in amniotic fluid and maternal urine collected on the same day were studied among 71 pregnant women presenting for an amniocentesis at the Mount Sinai Medical Center (NY, USA). Maternal urine was collected at the time of the amniocentesis appointment, and on two subsequent occasions. Urine and amniotic fluid were analyzed for nine phenols.The study aiming at characterizing bias was based on simulated data. Results: Among the subsample of 191 pregnant women from the EDEN cohort, we observed a negative association between dichlorophenols and birth weight and a positive association between benzophenone-3 and birth weight. The associations with dichlorophenols were not replicated in the larger subsample of the EDEN cohort (n = 520). Triclosan concentration was negatively associated with all of the growth parameters measured at the third ultrasound examination (p ≤ 0.16) and with head circumference measured at birth (β = - 1.4 mm, 95% CI; -2.8; 0.0). All of the parabens were positively associated with weight at birth (p < 0.05). These associations remained in childhood for methyl- and propyl-parabens. Regarding the variability in phenol urinary concentrations during pregnancy, the intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) ranged between 0.48 and 0.62 for all phenols except bisphenol A (ICC = 0.11). Only benzophenone-3 and propylparaben were detectable in at least half of the amniotic fluid samples; for these phenols, concentrations in maternal urine and amniotic fluid were positively associated. In a simulation study, we estimated that 5 samples will be needed to correctly estimate exposure to chemicals with ICC of 0.6, while for chemicals with ICC of 0.15 around 25 samples would be needed.Conclusion: We only had spot urine sample to assess exposure in the EDEN cohort and findings may be affected by exposure misclassification, especially for bisphenol A for which we observed high variability in urine concentrations. Nevertheless, our study lends support to a potential effect of prenatal exposure to some phenols on pre- and early post-natal growth

Les activités de plein air et la randonnée pédestre en particulier comptent de plus en plus d’adeptes au Québec comme partout dans le monde. Alors que les randonneurs cherchent souvent à se rapprocher de la nature à travers cette activité et malgré son aspect minimaliste, celle-ci peut considérablement dégrader les milieux traversés. Le Parc d’Environnement Naturel de Sutton (PENS) est gestionnaire d’un réseau de 52 km de sentiers dont une partie se situe à l’intérieur de la Réserve Naturelle des Montagnes Vertes (RNMV). Avec plus de 37 000 visiteurs en 2013, il est le troisième réseau de sentiers le plus fréquenté des Cantons-de-l’Est. Cependant, depuis plusieurs années, une dégradation de son réseau est observée. Afin de lutter contre cette dégradation, ce projet avait pour objectif de développer un outil de suivi participatif de la condition des sentiers exploitable par un organisme tel que le PENS. Dans un premier temps, ce projet a commencé par un diagnostic du réseau pour lequel les données ont été récoltées selon un échantillonnage ponctuel et un recensement continu ainsi qu’une analyse des facteurs influençant sa dégradation. Cette première étape a permis d’apporter de nouvelles connaissances pour améliorer la durabilité d’un sentier. Ainsi, le rôle de la pente, de l’angle d’alignement du sentier, de l’orientation du versant, du type de forêt, de la densité de végétation, de la texture et de l'épaisseur des formations meubles ainsi que de l’envasement ont été évalués à l’aide de séries régressions linéaires pour tenter d’expliquer l’exposition des racines, la présence de sentiers informels et l’incision ou l’élargissement des sentiers. De plus, elle a permis d’acquérir les données de références pour la deuxième partie du projet. Dans un deuxième temps, un protocole de mesure simple, prévu pour être appliqué par des personnes bénévoles sans expérience dans l’aménagement de sentiers a été testé sur une portion des sentiers. Au total, 6 équipes de 2 ou 3 bénévoles ont appliqué ce protocole de mesure sur un tronçon expérimental de 750 m. La qualité de mesures réalisées a été évaluée avec le coefficient Kappa de Fleiss et celui de Spearman. En dépit d’un effectif relativement faible, l’expérimentation du protocole de suivi montre qu’un protocole de mesures simple selon un échantillonnage ponctuel permet d’évaluer efficacement la condition de sentiers. En revanche, la technique de recensement continu ne semble pas adaptée, car les occurrences détectées présentent trop de disparités entre les équipes. Le diagnostic du territoire a permis de dresser le portrait de la condition des sentiers. Quant à l’analyse des facteurs de dégradation, elle a permis d’établir une grille multicritère des caractéristiques à rechercher ou au contraire à éviter pour l’aménagement de sentiers durables.

A number of exciting recent developments in the field of sieve theory have been done concerning bounded gaps between prime numbers. One of the main techniques used in these papers is a modified version of Selberg's Sieve from the 1940's. While there are a number of sources that explain the original sieve, most, if not all, are quite inaccessible to those without significant experience in analytic number theory. The goal of this exposition is to change that. The statement and proof of the general form of Selberg's sieve is, by itself, difficult to understand and appreciate. For this reason, the inital exposition herein will be about one particular application: to recover Chebysheff's upper bound on the order of magnitude of the number of primes less than a given number. As Selberg's sieve follows some of the same initial steps as the more elementary sieve of Eratosthenes, this latter sieve will be worked through as well. To help the reader get a better sense of Selberg's sieve, a few particular applications are worked through, including an upper bound on the number of twin primes less than a number. This will then be used to show the convergence of the reciprocals of the twin primes.

This dissertation consists of two parts. Part I examines three historical attempts at explaining colour on the basis of Goethe's Farbenlehre. Schopenhauer, Hegel and Wittgenstein each give successful explanations of some but not all colour phenomena. As they succeed and fail in the same areas in which more recent subjectivist and objectivist accounts succeed and fail it must be concluded that the nature of colour does not allow for reduction to subjective states of mind or to objective physical processes. Part II examines colour itself: The first three chapters establish internal colour relations. Colour language and colour blindness re-introduce the human subject whose importance is most evident in the contemplation of paintings. As paintings cannot only represent three dimensional objects but can also evoke feelings through mere colour effects, colour is an important medium for the communication of subjectivity and ideality. The conclusion is twofold. First, we have to strictly differentiate between the ontology and epistemology of colour: Colour exists objectively and hence independently of observers, but internal colour relations are nevertheless determined by human thought. Secondly, colour is irreducible: although science can explain most of its aspects the nature of colour itself can only be understood through the irreducible variety of colour effects.

Die Akkumulation von lipophilen und biologisch persistenten Chlorkohlenwasserstoffen in der Nahrungskette und die infolgedessen auftretende relativ hohe Belastung gestillter Säuglinge hat zu Besorgnissen hinsichtlich möglicher negativer Folgen für die Gesundheit dieser Kinder geführt. Ein Fokus der Arbeit ist Frage, ob der Kontamination von Humanmilch mit polychlorierten Dibenzo-p-dioxinen (PCDDs, 'Dioxine'), Dibenzofuranen (PCDFs, 'Furanen') und Biphenylen (PCBs) in Deutschland zu messbaren Veränderungen sensibler biologischer Parametern führt. Blut wurde im Alter von 11 Monaten von gestillten (für mindestens 4 Monate, n=80) und nicht gestillten Kindern (n=21) entnommen zur umfangreichen Untersuchung des Immunsystems, von biologischen Parametern im Plasma und von Parametern der Schilddrüsenfunktion. Die direkte Messung von PCDDs, PCDFs und PCBs im Plasma bei den Kindern und deren Müttern konnte die erwartete Akkumulation dieser Verbindungen bestätigen, die etwa 4-fach höheren Werten beim Kind (im Vergleich zu mütterlichen Werten) nach einer langen Stillperiode vom 40 Wochen entspricht. Es konnte keine signifikante Korrelation von den untersuchten biologischen Parametern mit den Fremdstoff-Konzentrationen gefunden werden. Somit konnten keine biologischen Effekte dieser in der Muttermilch ungewünschten Verbindungen nachgewiesen werden, und die bestehende Stillempfehlung konnte bekräftigt werden. Der zweite Fokus der Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Frage von biologischen Wirkungen bei zwei Frauen, die gegenüber der am meisten toxischen Dioxin-Verbindung exponiert wurden: 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlordibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). Diese Frauen hatten die höchsten je beim Menschen gemessenen Konzentrationen, eine der beiden leidet unter einer schweren Chlorakne. Es wurde ein breites Spektrum immunologischer Parameter untersucht sowie die Aktivität der Cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) Aktivität in der Leber, die mit dem Koffein-Test gemessen wurde. Zum Vergleich wurden zwei Kontrollgruppen bestehend aus 30 Nichtrauchern bzw. 20 starken Rauchern untersucht unter Verwendung der gleichen Methoden. Die Ergebnisse des Koffein-Tests zeigen eine ca. 10-fach höhere CYP1A2-Aktivität bei den hoch TCDD-exponierten Frauen, während Tabakrauch (durchschnittlich 28 Zigaretten pro Tag) zu einem maximal 1,8-fachem Anstieg führte. Die immunologischen Untersuchungen zeigten keine Hinweise auf einen starken Einfluss von TCDD bei den hochexponierten Frauen. Es bestätigte sich, dass der Mensch relativ wenig sensibel ist in Hinblick auf die toxischen Effekte von TCDD. The accumulation of lipophilic and biologically persistent chlorinated hydrocarbons in the food chain and the following relatively high exposure of breast-fed infants has caused concern about possible negative health effects in these children. One focus of the document is the question whether the contamination of human milk with polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs, 'dioxins'), dibenzofurans (PCDFs, 'furans') and biphenyls (PCBs) in Germany leads to measurable changes of sensitive biological parameters. Blood was taken from breast-fed (for at least four months, n=80) and formula-fed infants (n=21) at the age of 11 months for extensive investigations regarding the immune system and biological parameters in plasma including those of the thyroid function. From direct measurements of PCDDs, PCDFs and PCBs in plasma of the children and their mothers, the expected accumulation of the compounds was confirmed, corresponding to about 4-times higher values in the infant (compared to maternal values) following a long duration of breast-feeding of 40 weeks. For the different biological parameters investigated, no significant correlation with concentrations of the xenobiotics was found. Therefore, biological effects of these unwanted compounds in human milk. could not be detected, and the existing recommendation for breast-feeding was emphasized. The second focus of the document is the investigation of biological changes in two women exposed to the most toxic dioxin: 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). These women had the highest concentrations of this compound ever measured in adults, one of them suffering from severe chloracne. A broad panel of immunological parameters was measured as well as hepatic cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) activity using the caffeine test. For comparison, two age-matched control groups of 30 non-smokers and 20 heavy smokers were studied using the same methods. Results of caffeine tests showed an about 10-fold increase of CYP1A2 activity in the highly TCDD-exposed women, whereas tobacco smoke (28 cigarettes per day on average) was found to increase the activity 1.8-times maximally. Immunological investigations did not reveal a strong impact of TCDD in these highly exposed women. These results confirm that humans are relatively insensitive to the toxic effects of dioxins.

This thesis is a context-sensitive study of key epistemological commitments and concerns presented in Philo’s two series of exegetical writings. The major conclusion advanced in this thesis is that two theological epistemologies, distinct yet related, can be detected among these writings. The first epistemology is specific to the Allegorical Commentary. The second epistemology is specific to the ‘Exposition of the Law.’ The epistemology of the Allegorical Commentary reflects a threefold conviction: the sovereignty of God, the creaturely contingency of the human mind and its inescapable limitations. In conversation with key epistemological notions of his day, Philo develops this threefold conviction in exegetical discourses that are grounded in Pentateuchal texts portraying the God of Moses as both possessing epistemic authority and aiding the aspiring mind to gain purification and perfection in the knowledge of God. Guided by this threefold conviction, Philo enlists key metaphors of his day – initiation into divine mysteries and divine inspiration, among others –in order to capture something of the essence of Moses’ twofold way of ascending to the divine, an approach which requires at times the enhancement of human reason and at other times the eviction of human reason. The epistemology of the ‘Exposition’ reflects Philo’s understanding of the Pentateuch as a perfect whole partitioned into three distinct yet inseverable parts. Philo’s knowledge discourses in the ‘creation’ part of the ‘Exposition’ reflect two primary movements of thought. The first is heavily invested with a Platonic reading of Genesis 1.27 while the second invests Genesis 2.7 with a mixture of Platonic and Stoic notions of human transformation and well-being. Philo’s discourses in the ‘patriarchs’ segment reflect an interest in portraying the three great patriarchs as exemplars of the virtues of instruction (Abraham), nature (Isaac), and practice (Jacob) which featured prominently in Greek models of education. In the ‘Moses’ segment of the ‘Exposition,’ many of Philo’s discourses on knowledge are marked by an interest in presenting Moses as the ideal king, lawgiver, prophet and priest who surpasses Plato’s paradigm of the philosopher-king. L'hypoxie intermittente (HI) est une composante majeure du syndrome d'apnées obstructives du sommeil (SAOS). Cette pathologie affectant 5% de la population générale, correspond à des épisodes répétitifs de collapsus du pharynx pendant le sommeil, à l'origine d'une hypoxie. Le SAOS est associé à une augmentation du risque cardiovasculaire. Le but de ce travail est de caractériser d'une part, les effets sur la fonction cardiaque d'une exposition aiguë chez le rat, et d'autre part, les conséquences inflammatoires, marqueurs précoces de l'athérogenèse, d'une exposition chronique chez la souris. 24 h après une exposition aiguë à l'HI (4 h à 10% d'O2) une récupération fonctionnelle post-ischémique et une réduction de la nécrose cellulaire sont observées suite à une séquence d'ischémie-reperfusion dans un modèle de cœur isolé. Ces évènements reflètent un phénomène de protection myocardique retardée, encore appelé préconditionnement (PC) myocardique. Ce PC induit par l'HI, semble impliquer divers acteurs, la p38 MAP kinase et Erk1/2 comme initiateurs, la PKC, la iNOS et les canaux KATP mitochondriaux comme médiateurs. La compréhension du rôle de chacun de ces acteurs permettrait d'utiliser ces cibles potentielles afin de prévenir les maladies cardiovasculaires. L'exposition chronique à l'HI (5, 14 et 35 jours à 5% d'O2), induit une augmentation de la prolifération cellulaire, des taux de chimiokines inflammatoires ainsi que du phénomène de «rolling» leucocytaire. L'analyse approfondie de ce phénotype inflammatoire chez l'animal, permettrait de comprendre dans une perspective thérapeutique, l'athérogenèse développée par les patients porteurs de SAOS.

Ce travail de thèse propose une monographie de l’Exposition internationale du surréalisme qui se déroula à Paris en janvier-février 1938. Cette manifestation qui marque une date importante dans l’histoire des dernières véhémences du surréalisme sera étudiée dans une réflexion contextualisée du point de vue historique, idéologique et iconologique reposant prioritairement sur la base des archives, correspondances, témoignages, articles de presse et photographies de l’époque. La première partie de ce travail est consacrée à la reconstruction historique de cet événement, de sa genèse, aux préparatifs jusqu’à la visite de l’exposition, telle que les visiteurs purent la vivre le soir du vernissage à la Galerie Beaux-Arts le 17 janvier 1938. La seconde partie est dédiée aux œuvres et aux artistes. Cette recherche a pour objectif de proposer un catalogue au plus près de la réalité des œuvres ayant été exposées à la Galerie Beaux-Arts (voir Annexes II). Mais aussi d’aborder la volonté rétrospective de cette manifestation ainsi que le développement de l’internationalisation du mouvement au travers des nationalités représentées.La dernière partie de cette recherche s’attache à l’analyse des intentions avouées et inavouées de l’exposition de 1938 et à sa réception. Notamment à l’étude des enjeux de pouvoir historique, politique et artistique sous-jacents, qui permettent d’interpréter cette manifestation sous un angle différent, non pas celui d’un bilan du surréalisme, mais bien plutôt celui d’une revanche éclatante face à ses détracteurs et d’une réaffirmation de la suprématie du groupe parisien dans l’exposition du surréalisme This thesis dissertation propounds a monograph of International Exhibition of Surrealism, which was held in Paris in the months of January-February 1938.This event, which was an important landmark in the history of the last vehemences of Surrealism will be analysed in an outlook contextualized from an historical, ideological and iconological points of view. This research will be based primarely on archives, letters, testimonies, newspapers articles, photographs of the era. The first part of this work is devoted to the historical reconstruction of this event, from its genesis to the preparations until the visit of the exhibition, as the visitors were able to experience it on the opening evening at the Galerie Beaux-Arts on January 17, 1938. The second part is dedicated to the works and artists.The purpose of this research is to present a nearest catalogue of works exhibited in the Galerie Beaux-Arts (see Annex II).This research also analyzes the will of the surrealists to present a retrospective exhibition, as well as the development of the internationalisation of the movement. The last part of this research focuses on the analyses of the intentions spoken and unspoken of the exhibition of 1938 and its reception.Specially in regards to the study of underlying issues of powers, from an historical, political and artistic point of view. The Macintosh Hierarchical File System Plus, HFS+, or as it is commonly referred to as the Mac Operating System, OS, Extended, was introduced in 1998 with Mac OS X 8.1. HFS+ is an update to HFS, Mac OS Standard format that offers more efficient use of disk space, implements international friendly file names, future support for named forks, and facilitates booting on non-Mac OS operating systems through different partition schemes. The HFS+ file system is efficient, yet, complex. It makes use of B-trees to implement key data structures for maintaining meta-data about folders, files, and data. The implementation of what happens within HFS+ at volume format, or when folders, files, and data are created, moved, or deleted is largely a mystery to those who are not programmers. The vast majority of information on this subject is relegated to documentation in books, papers, and online content that direct the reader to C code, libraries, and include files. If one can't interpret the complex C or Perl code implementations the opportunity to understand the workflow within HFS+ is less than adequate to develop a basic understanding of the internals and how they work. The basic concepts learned from this research will facilitate a better understanding of the HFS+ file system and journal as changes resulting from the adding and deleting files or folders are applied in a controlled, easy to follow, process. The primary tool used to examine the file system changes is a proprietary command line interface, CLI, tool called fileXray. This tool is actually a custom implementation of the HFS+ file system that has the ability to examine file system, meta-data, and data level information that isn't available in other tools. We will also use Apple's command line interface tool, Terminal, the WinHex graphical user interface, GUI, editor, The Sleuth Kit command line tools and DiffFork 1.1.9 help to document and illustrate the file system changes. The processes used to document the pristine and changed versions of the file system, with each experiment, are very similar such that the output files are identical with the exception of the actual change. Keeping the processes the same enables baseline comparisons using a diff tool like DiffFork. Side by side and line by line comparisons of the allocation, extents overflow, catalog, and attributes files will help identify where the changes occurred. The target device in this experiment is a two-gigabyte Universal Serial Bus, USB, thumb drive formatted with Global Unit Identifier, GUID, and Partition Table. L’art est depuis toujours un moyen possible pour surmonter des problèmes personnels. En cherchant une expérience partageable avec les autres, nous bénéficions de l’utilité de l’art pour sublimer la difficulté de la vie.Le monde caractérisé par sa nature « mobile » et « liquide », donne naissance à l’art contemporain qui met souvent en lumière la question de l’intimité. The economic crisis has affected the airline industry as much as it has affected all other industries in the world. The small airlines and maintenance organisations must find new opportunities and options in order to survive the harsh crisis. Priority Aero Maintenance is now an approved maintenance organisation performing maintenance on aircrafts, engines and components. The company sees economic gains in the future by becoming an approved organisation that follows the European Aviation Safety Agency guidelines (EASA) and meets the requirements outlined in the rules of Part-M. In order for the company to become an approved organization, responsible for continuing airworthiness of aircraft, a handbook should be presented to the local authority. This handbook describes the company’s responsibility for the continuing airworthiness in order for the authorities to get an insight into the company and its work. This thesis resulted in a draft of CAME (Continuing Airworthiness Management Exposition) and this draft has been approved by Priority Aero Maintenance. The CAME will in the future be used by the company as a basis for developing a more detailed manual to be presented to and approved by the Swedish Aviation Authority (Transportstyrelsen).

A large portion of decision analysis lies in a decision maker’s uncertainty about an outcome and what they perceive is the chance (probability) of that outcome occurring (in other words, an individual’s “degree of belief” that an outcome will occur). However, thinking probabilistically can be difficult and we rely on “rather primitive cognitive techniques to make” such assessments (these techniques are termed heuristics) (Clemen & Reilly, 2001 p.311). Heuristics are simple and intuitive but tend to result in probabilities that are biased. This thesis will connect the literature available from both the psychology behind the biases and the mathematical problems associated with the probability elicitation itself. Additionally, this thesis will present a better understanding of the biases that distort the probability elicitation for the decision maker along with suggestions for improving such assessments.

While the concept of the fictional character has been widely discussed at an interdisciplinary level, a foundational theory of character creation in Creative Writing is yet to follow. As a result, Creative Writing students refer to post-construction analysis in Literary Theory, or even the formulaic advice often suggested by popular writing manuals. Aiming to fill this gap, and at the same time reconcile the chasm between Literary Theory and Creative Writing, my thesis shall initiate a paradigm of character creation, by combining creativity with craftsmanship. More specifically, my approach consists of two interrelated stages: Conceptualisation entails the conception of the character by means of authorial perception, imagination and judgement, which precedes her textual birth; and Exposition, which pertains to the conveyance of such a priori knowledge on paper. My research is conducted through both synthesis and critical analysis. I will be presenting, analysing and thus substantiating my own method of work and at the same time I will examine existing theories I wish to encompass or challenge. My sources are interdisciplinary: Literary Theory and Criticism, Cognitive Psychology, Theory of Mind, Theory of Person and Linguistics are some of them. Examples from Rick Moody’s The Ice Storm (1994), J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace (1999) and Sarah Waters’ Fingersmith (2002) will be used to support my hypotheses. I will not be presuming upon the novelists’ original intentions, but rather testing my own method against their texts.

Die Zielsetzung dieser Studie war es, für digitale Panoramaschichtaufnahmen die Relation der subjektiven Bildqualität zur Exposition zu bestimmen. An Hand von Humanpräparataufnahmen konnten bei Standardwerten sowie experimentellen Variationen der Expositionsdaten weiterhin Effekte der intentionellen Unterexposition sowie der Strahlenaufhärtung auf die subjektive Bildqualität quantifiziert werden. Die Herstellung der Aufnahmen erfolgte auf einem Sirona Orthophos DS. Dabei wurden 37 Aufnahmen mit Expositionswerten von 60 kV/9 mA - 84 kV/13 mA aus dem Herstellerprogramm erzeugt und mit Hilfe einer modifizierten Steuerungssoftware zusätzliche PSA mit experimentellen Einstellungen von 60 kV/3 mA - 90 kV/11 mA hergestellt. Für die Beurteilung und Auswertung der subjektiven Bildqualität wurde eine individuelle Software (Eldoredo V2.2) entwickelt. 39 Zahnärzte und 5 MTRA beurteilten die Aufnahmen damit an einem Monitor unter standardisierten Bedingungen. Ein iterativer Beurteilungsprozess erlaubte, eine Serie von 1369 (37 x 37) PSA-Abbildungspaaren darzustellen. Für jedes Paar entschieden die Untersucher an Hand definierter Kriterien, ob eine PSA hinsichtlich der subjektiv beurteilten Bildqualität vorzuziehen oder Äquivalenz gegeben sei. Nach statistischer Aufarbeitung der Einzelentscheidungen ließ sich damit für jede Expositionsstufe ein Index der Bildqualität berechnen. Bei Expositionswerten in einem Bereich von 60 kV/9 mA - 69 kV/15 mA der Herstellersoftware und 60 kV/5 - 15 mA sowie 70 kV/5 - 15mA der experimentellen Software fanden sich dabei keine signifikanten Verteilungsunterschiede der Bildqualität. Eine intentionelle Unterexposition bei digitalen PSA-Geräten, etwa bei Kindern oder häufigen Wiederholungsaufnahmen, kann nach den vorliegenden Ergebnissen vertreten werden, ohne dass es dabei zu einer signifikanten Verschlechterung der Bildqualität kommt. Damit ist im Gegensatz dazu bei einer Strahlenaufhärtung in dem untersuchten digitalen System stets zu rechnen. Insgesamt zeigen die Ergebnisse, dass auch digitale PSA-Systeme beachtliche Reserven hinsichtlich der Dosisminimierung aufweisen können. The aim of this study was to describe the relation of the subjective image quality of digital panoramic radiographs in relation to exposure. In addition, variations of exposure were compared to standard settings, thus evaluating the effects of intentional underexposure on the achievable image quality. A Sirona Orthophos DS unit was used to produce 37 digital panoramic images of a human skull. Exposure values ranged from 60 kV/9 mA to 84 kV/13 mA in the conventional and 60 kV/3 mA to 90 kV/11 mA in the experimental setting. Assessment and evaluation of the subjective image quality were performed with an HTML-based protocol. 39 dentists and 5 radiographic assistants had to assign their preference of an image or equality in 1,369 (37x37) image pairs. The decisions were computed to a quality index for each exposure setting. Statistical analysis demonstrated no significant differences of image quality between 60 kV/9 mA - 69 kV/15 mA in the conventional and 60 kV/5 to15 mA as well as 70 kV/5 to 15 mA in the experimental setting. Following these results, a considerable dose reduction by the means of intentional underexposure can be achieved without any loss of image quality. By reducing the absorbed doses, an increase of kV values up to 80 kV and more is also correlated with dose reduction. However, those images showed high significant loss of quality. In summary, the results demonstrate an equivalent image quality of digital panoramic images over a very wide range of exposure values. The feasible dose reduction might be of interest not only in individuals (minors, repeated images), but also in defining general principles of panoramic imaging.

L'objectif de cette thèse est double. Premièrement, elle vise à proposer une revue de la littérature économique s'intéressant à l'exposition au taux de change de la profitabilité des entreprises non-financières, et à fournir de nouveaux enseignements sur son hétérogénéité intra et inter-sectorielle. Deuxièmement, cette thèse analyse les stratégies de production et de produits mises en œuvre par les firmes pour se prémunir des effets de ces variations de change. Puisque l'éventail de telles stratégies est large, le dernier chapitre se concentre sur la stratégie de montée en gamme This thesis follows a dual objective. First, it aims to summarize previous evidence on the magnitude and channels underpinning a non-financial firm’s operating exposure, i.e. the extent to which currency fluctuations can alter a company's future operating cash flow, and to provide new highlights on the heterogeneity of this exposure across firms. Second, this thesis investigates the product and production strategies that are appropriate for coping with the economic consequences of exchange rate changes on firms’ operating profits. Since the range of these strategies is large, it focuses on providing theoretical and empirical evidence for the strategy of up-market positioning

Le risque de tsunami en mer d'Alboran est peu médiatisé et méconnu du grand public. Dans ce bassin occidental de la mer Méditerranée, le contexte géologique est propice à l'occurrence de glissements sous-marins pouvant être à l'origine de tsunamis. Les conséquences de ces événements puissants et soudains pourraient être désastreuses pour les littoraux marocains et espagnols compte tenu du temps de réaction très court dont disposent les populations et du caractère extrême des catastrophes de 2004 (océan Indien) et 2011 (Japon). Le besoin d'anticiper leurs conséquences potentielles sur le littoral nord marocain en phase de développement socio-économique intense est donc justifié par le poids de cette menace latente et l'importance des enjeux qui y sont exposés. Dans un contexte de renforcement de la gestion des risques naturels au Maroc, aussi bien sur le volet de prévention que celui de gestion de crise, calibrer adéquatement les moyens pour répondre au risque de tsunami nécessite d'évaluer la vulnérabilité de la société marocaine. Choisi comme cas d'étude, la ville de Martil reflète les mutations territoriales et les dynamiques socio-économiques du littoral nord marocain, où un tsunami aurait des conséquences dramatiques.L'étude évalue l'aléa d'inondation par tsunami et la vulnérabilité de Martil à travers un atlas cartographique, premier du genre pour le littoral méditerranéen du Maroc. Elle analyse l'inondation pour deux scénarios de tsunamis générés par des glissements sous-marins de 0.9 km³ et 3.8 km³ en utilisant des méthodes SIG et de modélisation numérique. Martil, située dans une plaine littorale, est particulièrement sensible aux inondations, surtout en front de mer et dans les zones basses. En confrontant les résultats des modèles avec le plan d'aménagement local, il apparaît que la progression urbaine incontrôlée et axée sur l'accueil touristique augmente la vulnérabilité de la ville. Le système de gestion de crise de Martil montre une capacité limitée à gérer une catastrophe, avec des dysfonctionnements potentiels majeurs de ses activités sociales, culturelles, éducatives, religieuses et économiques. En utilisant des bases de données nationales, l'étude estime les pertes potentielles des entreprises pour chaque scénario, montrant que la concentration économique vers les services du secteur touristique exacerbe la vulnérabilité d'une ville souffrant déjà de disparités socio-économiques. Cette étude ouvre des perspectives pour appliquer cette méthodologie à d'autres communes du littoral nord marocain pour lesquelles une évaluation du risque de tsunami apparaît également nécessaire The risk of tsunamis in the Alboran Sea receives little media coverage and is little known to the general public. In this western basin of the Mediterranean Sea, the geological context is conducive to the occurrence of submarine landslides that has the potential to cause tsunamis. The consequences of these sudden, powerful events could be disastrous for the Moroccan and Spanish coastlines, given the short reaction time that such an event provides and the extreme nature of the disasters in 2004 (Indian Ocean) and 2011 (Japan).The need to anticipate their potential consequences on the northern Moroccan coastline, which is currently undergoing intense socio-economic development, is therefore justified by the weight of this latent threat and the importance of the issues at stake. In a context of strengthening natural risk management in Morocco, both in terms of prevention and crisis management, adequately calibrating the means to respond to the risk of a tsunami requires an assessment of the vulnerability of Moroccan society. Chosen as a case study, the town of Martil reflects the territorial changes and socio-economic dynamics of Morocco's northern coastline, where a tsunami would have dramatic consequences.This study assesses the tsunami inundation hazard and vulnerability of Martil using a cartographic atlas, the first of its kind for Morocco's Mediterranean coastline. It analyses inundation for two tsunami scenarios generated by submarine landslides of 0.9 km³ and 3.8 km³ using GIS and numerical modelling methods. Martil, located on a coastal plain, is particularly susceptible to flooding, especially on the seafront and in low-lying areas. A comparison of the results of the models with the local development plan shows that uncontrolled urban growth focused on tourism is increasing the town's vulnerability. Martil's crisis management system shows a limited capacity to deal with a disaster, with major potential dysfunctions in its social, cultural, educational, religious and economic activities. Using national databases, this study estimates potential business losses for each scenario, showing that the economic concentration on services in the tourism sector exacerbates the vulnerability of a city already suffering from socio-economic disparities. This study opens the possibility of applying this methodology to other towns on the northern Moroccan coast, where a tsunami risk assessment would also appear to be necessary

Eine kürzlich durchgeführte klinische Studie (MAC-Studie) lieferte Hinweise auf ein günstigeres Behandlungsergebnis bei Therapeutenbegleitung. Fragestellung: Wie lassen sich Effekte therapeutenbegleiteter Exposition (T+) im Vergleich zu Exposition ohne Therapeutenbegleitung (T–) erklären? Methode: Daten von 301 Patienten, die eine expositionsbasierte KVT mit bzw. ohne Therapeutenbegleitung erhalten hatten, wurden analysiert. Untersucht wurden der Einfluss der initialen Störungsschwere, des Sicherheitsverhaltens sowie differenzielle Effekte der Bedingungen auf die Angst vor der Angst. Zusätzlich wurde überprüft, inwieweit die Übungshäufigkeit in den Behandlungsbedingungen variiert und einen Mediator des Behandlungserfolgs darstellt. Ergebnisse: Störungsschwere und Sicherheitsverhalten zeigten keine differenziellen Effekte zwischen den Bedingungen; die T+ Bedingung führte jedoch zu stärkeren Reduktionen der Angst vor der Angst im Angstsensitivitätsindex. Patienten der T+ Bedingung führten häufiger selbständig Expositionsübungen durch, während Patienten in T– im Durchschnitt länger übten. Die Übungshäufigkeit stellte dabei einen Mediator des Behandlungserfolgs dar. Schlussfolgerungen: Günstigere Effekte einer therapeutenbegleiteten Exposition gehen auf stärkere Reduktionen der Angst vor der Angst sowie auf eine höhere Übungshäufigkeit im Selbstmanagement zurück Theoretical background: There is a paucity of studies examining the role of therapist guidance during in-vivo exposure for panic disorder with agoraphobia (PD/AG). Methods: Data from 301 patients with PD/AG who received either CBT with therapist guidance during in-vivo exposure (T+), or CBT with programmed exposure practice (T–) were analysed in regard to effects of initial symptom severity, subtle avoidance behaviours, reductions in fear of fear, and frequency of exposure homework. Results: There were no interaction effects between symptom severity or subtle avoidance and outcome. T+ was associated with higher reductions in fear of fear as well as with higher frequency of exposure homework. Frequency of exposure homework mediated the effect of group on outcome. Conclusion: Advantages of therapist-guided exposure as well as frequency of self-exposure might be attributed to higher reductions in fear of fear

L'objectif général de ce travail était d'étudier la relation entre exposition professionnelle maternelle aux solvants organiques et malformations congénitales.Ce projet s'est appuyé sur les données de la cohorte PELAGIE. Il s'agit d'une cohorte mère enfant avec inclusion de 3 421 femmes en début de grossesse en population générale en Bretagne. L'exposition aux solvants était définie par différentes méthodes (expositions déclarées, matrices emplois-expositions, dosages urinaires de métabolites de solvants chlorés et d'éthers de glycol).Nous avons mis en évidence une relation entre l'exposition aux solvants mesurée par des méthodes indirectes et les malformations congénitales. Puis, pour un échantillon aléatoire de451 femmes, nous avons étudié les déterminants de la détection urinaire des métabolites de solvants. Enfin, dans le cadre d'une étude cas-témoins dans la cohorte, la relation entre métabolites urinaires de solvants et malformations congénitales a été étudiée.
