Recent research suggests that caregiver–child extratextual talk during shared book reading facilitates the development of preschool children’s oral language skills. This study investigated the effects of the amount of picturebook text on mother–child extratextual talk during shared book reading. Twenty-four mother–child dyads (children aged 3;01–3;11) were video-recorded as they read two books: low text and high text. Book reading interaction was transcribed, and mothers’ extratextual talk coded for level of abstraction, mean length of utterance and lexical diversity. The mean number of extratextual utterances was calculated for mothers and children, separately. Low-text books facilitated a similar amount of extratextual talk, but higher rates per minute because of their shorter reading durations. The amount of text did not affect the level of abstraction, mean length of utterance, or lexical diversity of maternal extratextual talk. The amount of picturebook text should be considered by those developing and implementing interactive reading interventions. Low-text books facilitate the same amount and quality of extratextual talk in shorter time periods.

En este episodio, el rey macedonio encuentra un árbol construido en oro que constituye, al parecer, un autómata, es decir una especie de robot o ente que se mueve por ciertas energías físicas. En este artículo, el autor trata de ahondar en este pasaje, revelando sus funciones intra y extratextuales, así como su relación intertextual y extratextual con otras obras y episodios o aspectos históricos.

Se analiza el recurso de las notas a pie de página insertas en la traducción independiente de literatura comercial en versión digital, de la trilogía Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker y Fifty Shades Freed, de E. L. James. Se examina el grado de influencia de esos elementos extratextuales, y se concluye que todos ellos, organizados en un complejo proceso de traducción, en especial los del contexto de llegada, condicionan la estrategia traductológica. Abstract This study examines the use of footnotes as a translation strategy in the independent translation of commercial literature in digital format, based on the trilogy written by E. L. James, Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. The analysis measures the influence of these extratextual elements within the complex translation process, specifically those of the target language context, and it is concluded that they condition the translation strategies used.

In this paper, we have made an attempt to portray a perceivable sketch of extratextual documentative annotation which, in the present frame of text annotation, is considered as one of the indispensable processes through which we can add representational information to the texts included in a written corpus. This becomes more important when a corpus is made with a large number of texts obtained from different genres and text types. To develop a workable frame for extratextual annotation, at each stage, we have broadly classified the existing processes of corpus annotation into two broad types. Moreover, we have tried to explain different layers that are embedded with extratextual annotation of texts as well as marked out the applications which can substantially enhance the accessibility of language data from a corpus for the works of text file management, information retrieval, lexical items extraction, and language processing. The techniques that we have proposed and described in this paper are unique in the sense that these are highly useful for expanding the utility of data of a written text corpus beyond the immediate horizons of language processing to the realms of theoretical, descriptive, and applied linguistics. In this paper, we have also argued that we should try to annotate all kinds of written text corpora so far developed in different natural languages at the extratextual level in a uniform manner so that the text samples stored in corpora can be uniformly used for various works of descriptive linguistics, theoretical linguistics, language technology, and applied linguistics including grammar writing, dictionary compilation, and language teaching. The annotation scheme proposed here is applied on a sample Bangla text corpus and we have noted that the accessibility of data and information from this kind of corpus is far easier than that of an un-annotated raw corpus.

This paper investigates the validity of André Lefevere’s assumption that “a canonized author is translated more on his own terms (according to his own poetics) than on those of the receiving system” (2000: 237) through a case study of Edgar Allan Poe retranslations in the Turkish literary system. The first part of the paper includes extratextual analysis carried out according to Gérard Genette’s categorization of “metatexts” and “paratexts,” and a further category which includes the social media. Poe’s poetics and the poetics of the Turkish literary system, as well as Poe’s reception in the system are explored through extratextual analysis to determine whether Poe gained more canonicity or reputation. The extratextual analysis reveals the author’s increasing influence, reception and reputation in the Turkish literary system over a time span of almost ninety years. The second part of the paper presents the textual analysis of Poe’s two tales, “Hop-Frog” and “The Masque of the Red Death”, in eight translations published between 1928 and 2002. Textual analysis serves to reveal whether Poe was translated more according to his own poetics as he became more reputable in the target literary system. The paper concludes that factors other than reputation of an author have also a role to play in translating an author according to his own poetics.

This article is based on a case study of intra- and extratextual voices in six different Finnish retranslations of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. Voice is understood here as the set of textual cues characterizing a subjective or collective identity in a text. The author focuses on what is special about voice in retranslation and how intratextual (a character’s voice) and extratextual voices (translators’ and publishers’ voices) might be related in retranslation. The analysis indicates that a character’s voice as a whole can reflect the retranslator’s voice and the purpose of his/her translation. In addition, translators’ voices can recirculate in retranslation, but they do not necessarily do so if the purpose of the translation, the translator’s choice of source texts, or translation ethics prevents this.

The paper focuses on the specificity of metatextual potential of John Madden’s fictional biopic “Shakespeare in Love” (1998), viewed as a complex metatextualintermedial construct. The metatextual resources of the film are being analysed on three key levels: intratextual (metatextual fragments), intertextual (allusions to the other works of the canon) and extratextual (text as an intersemiotic metatext). On the intratextual level four main forms of metatextual commentary are singled out: a) the paratextual commentary; b) the leitmotif; c) the self-referential fragments; d) the allusions to the present-day realia. In relation to the intertextual level of the film’s metatextual potential references to Shakespeare’s works are discussed as a metatext which offers an explanation of the sources of Shakespeare’s inspiration. Within the extratextual level, “Shakespeare in Love” is viewed as an intersemiotic metatext which comments upon two major semantic fields: the figure of Shakespeare and the epoch of the English Renaissance. The authors also put forward the suggestions for the practical application of the research results.

This study seeks to scrutinize extratextual discourses which frame the Turkish translations and post-translation rewritings of Hamlet as an instrument of national self-imagining and projecting Turkey’s self-image in different socio-political and historical contexts. The study points out that various discourses see image construction as the major motive behind the different versions of Hamlet in Turkey. It also underlines that the extratextual material surrounding the retranslations and rewritings focus on various contextual dynamics that reveal how Turkey is torn between dualities that frame its image in line with the narratives of modernity and tradition, secularism and religion, easternness and westernness. In this context, the study emphasizes that theatre translation, and particularly the translations of Hamlet, formed significant part of the late Ottoman Empire’s and modern Turkey’s westernization efforts. Ultimately, the study concludes that discourses on the Hamlet renderings have foregrounded what is and what is not part of Turkey’s historically constructed self-image by bringing the West alongside the East, centering on how the retranslations and rewritings promote Turkey’s Western (secular and modern) identity against a largely negative representation of its eastern cultural identity. Such a necessity is especially noticeable in the case of onomastics which constitutes a vital part of Olga Tokarczuk’s novel Primeval and Other Times. Short story theory in English allows for an analysis of certain particularities of the genre. This article addresses the story “Her Letters,” by Kate Chopin, from the perspective of textual framing: intratextual, extratextual, intertextual and circumtextual views. The recalcitrance resulting from the interplay of these frames produces a reading of the story from the subversive position of the female protagonist and the letters she leaves upon her death, letters that frame the binomial silence/word.

Agota Kristof y Katalin Molnár, dos autoras franco-húngaras del siglo XX, comparten la preocupación por utilizar un lenguaje que pueda expresar una cierta realidad y verdad. Para eso, se alejan de la lengua francesa normativa y escriben en un lenguaje incorrecto, más apto a representar su diferencia. Sin embargo, mientras que Kristof lo hace queriendo llegar a una máxima objetividad, Molnár escribe de forma exageradamente subjetiva. En el presente artículo examinamos la postura textual y extratextual de estas autoras respecto a la posibilidad de escribir, mediante el análisis del lenguaje en la trilogía d Molnár.

<p>Phanariot verses – poems and songs – of the eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth comprise perhaps the largest segment of Modern Greek literature of the Age of the Enlightenment. This article calls into question the widely held view that Phanariot verses make up a homogenized body of texts. Based on extratextual and intratextual criteria and comparing texts from different periods of time, it proposes a distinction between two groups, an earlier one that relates to the Phanariot milieu and a more recent one that provided an outlet for expression for the fledgling Greek bourgeoisie.</p>

The present article studies Shklovsky’s idea of emotional and cognitive renewal of the habitual – ostranenie – alongside cognate concepts in psychology and cognitive studies. It redefines ostranenie not as a device (as commonly accepted in literary studies), but as a cognitive/psychological effect, and suggests the term “extratextual ostranenie” to refer to the feeling one has when the usual becomes seemingly strange – and at the same time more rather than less emotionally relevant. As for literary ostranenie, even when it is created though characters who feel alienated or depersonalized, the readers’ experience is exactly the opposite experience – emotional reconnection to the world.

Abstract The German words in the title are taken from the first German translation of the Swedish children’s book Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige (Nils Holgersson’s wonderful journey throughout Sweden, Lagerlöf 1906-1907). In this translation Nils is said to land in Germany, which is never the case in the Swedish original. Presumably, the German translator Klaiber added this extra visit to oblige the German readers with a visit of Nils to their own country. Looking at some of the German versions of Nils Holgersson, this article addresses the influence of extratextual factors, i.e., different kind of norms, on the translating and rewriting process.

This paper seeks to destabilize the silent privilege given to the secured juridical‐political position of the citizen as the stable site of enunciation of the problem/solution framework under which the stranger (foreigner, immigrant, refugee) is theoretically located. By means of textual, intertextual, and extratextual readings of Antigone, the paper argues that it is politically and literarily possible to (re)invent her for strangers in the twenty‐first century, that is, for those symbolically produced as not‐legally locatable and who resignify their ambivalent ontological status between life and death as an alternative sociopolitical location of speech and action in equality with “others.”

This paper is ascribed to the conservative perception that Mario Vargas Llosa works for the discursive construction of The Time of the Hero. This political ideology characterized by its autonomy and impartiality will allow us to recognize the author’s purpose when addressing the mood of violence in the performance of the characters. For its effective fluctuation, this study will include three neuralgic and related treatments around this literary work: the extratextual contextualization, the epistemology of violence and the narratological analysis from the concomitant actants. This conventional taxonomy that is formulated will be useful to justify the extent to which violence acquires a core value for human development.

The present article considers such text categories as integrity and coherence. The latter is expressed by two different terms in English – cohesion and coherence. There are different approaches towards these two terms, which, however, lead to nearly the same conclusion. The former (integrity) is a means of combining intertextual units while the latter (coherence) is the category ensuring the unity of the text and establishing a link between both intertextual and extra-textual situations and environments. Integrity in its turn, is viewed as a means of integrating text elements into a whole and helping to create an intertextual and extratextual context that is closely related to the category of coherence.

Traditionally, there has been little intersection between cognitive film theory and documentary studies. This article initially outlines the main reasons for this lacuna, but it also highlights the few existing exceptions. While these remain too embryonic to initiate a large, overarching, and evolving discourse, they constitute seminal landmarks and stepping stones for the future of cognitive documentary studies, which, as we argue, needs to be a pragmatic endeavor. Based on this premise, we propose a research framework consisting of four areas of interest: the mediation of realities; character engagement; emotion and embodied experience; and documentary practice. This framework takes into account intratextual and extratextual aspects in relation to documentary production and reception, as well as potential social impacts.

A partir da noção de efeito de real, marca, segundo Roland Barthes (1971), essencial para os textos realistas, busca-se compreender como a narrativa Esfinge, do escritor caxiense Coelho Neto, utiliza estratégias de descrições do mundo extratextual para, aos poucos inserindo fatos sobrenaturais, construir o que pode se chamar de fantasticidade da obra. Assim, defendemos que a construção do fantástico na obra em análise está atrelada à forma como a narrativa utiliza as referências do mundo real e como elas, por se oporem aos fatos fantásticos da obra, impõem no leitor a solução de uma dúvida. A pesquisa segue os direcionamentos teóricos de Tzvetan Todorov (1975), Antonio Compagnon (2010), David Roas (2014) e Irlemar Chiampi (2015).

Drawing from urban and ontological perspectives on Joseph Conrad’s prose and schizoanalysis, this article examines the entanglement of urban spaces and unstable subjectivities in The Secret Agent. Conrad’s psychological realism and impressionistic depiction of London generate a sense of place, topophilia, which imbues the novel with an extratextual dimension that oscillates between textuality and spatiality. The novel foregrounds characters in the cityscape as they permeate setting and narrative with their subjectivities and vice versa; the unstable subjectivities and spaces generate affective resonances that fracture the narrative and implicate the reader. An accompanying narratological analysis demonstrates how Conrad’s narrative techniques facilitate the reader’s interpolation into the liminal, ontological dimension of text and place.

This article aims to find cultural equivalents for the Lithuanian mythological creature laumė in the English and Russian languages. Therefore, a comparative analysis of similar mythological creatures in Lithuanian, Russian and English languages and cultures was carried out. The results of the analysis have shown which names of these creatures might be considered cultural equivalents. Such information is useful not only when choosing a domestication strategy, but for a foreignization strategy as well because these equivalents can be used both in the translation text itself and in additional extratextual comments. The conclusions given at the end of this article may be of practical importance for translators or authors writing about Lithuanian mythology and folklore for English or Russian speaking readers.

Fourteen mother–child dyads were videotaped four times over 16 days as they repeatedly read an initially unfamiliar storybook. Videotapes were transcribed and a variety of discourse measures were coded for both mother and child. Principal components analysis was used to combine three maternal and three child variables into a single composite variable, engagement, which described levels and quality of maternal and child participation in extratextual interactions during the first reading session. Dyads with the highest levels of engagement during the first session showed the greatest rates of change for a number of discourse measures. Results are discussed in terms of maternal scaffolding approaches, child participation, the importance of context and the nature of the task, and implications for intervention.

Este trabajo busca, a partir de la lectura de dos cuentos del escritor Primo Mendoza Hernández recogidos en su libro Territorios (2009), reflexionar sobre la experiencia estética y la ironía como elementos que trascienden el texto ficcional y establecen una relación directa con la realidad extratextual. En este caso, el barrio del que proviene Mendoza Hernández y donde se sitúan sus relatos es Tepito, una zona del centro de la ciudad de México que se configura de manera clara como ejemplo cuando se busca describir un espacio conflictivo, con rasgos claramente identitarios. La ironía y la experiencia estética se reconfiguran en las ficciones como elementos que rompen el orden acostumbrado de un lugar consolidado en sus tradiciones, lo que hace posible su lectura y recomposición interpretativa.

Abstract This article opens with a reflection on the extrinsic and intrinsic causes of the neglect of Chinese prose in sinological literary studies, followed by the construction of a patterning-based scheme for codifying Chinese prose forms. An in-depth analysis of eight famous texts, drawn from antiquity through the Qing, reveals how continual innovations in extratextual patterning and textual patterning have given rise to manifold and inherently related prose forms over the millennia. The close reading also sheds light on these prose forms' distinctive artistic features, as well as their symbiotic relationships with the three types of genres (narrative, descriptive, and expository) and with broad sociopolitical and cultural developments. It is hoped that these findings will generate serious interest in prose studies among literary sinologists.

La traducción de una obra de teatro va mucho más allá de la traducción del texto escrito, puesto que la dimensión extratextual de un texto dramático incluye componentes culturales y semióticos, convenciones dramáticas, aspectos de la actuación y de la escenificación. De este modo, el traductor se enfrenta a una plétora de posibilidades, y sus elecciones se ven fundamentalmente condicionadas por el propósito y las circunstancias que en principio determinan la traducción. En este artículo se examinan primeramente cuáles son las principales dificultades que encuentran los traductores de textos dramáticos. A continuación se comparan tres traducciones al inglés de Bodas de sangre de Federico García Lorca, a fin de ejemplificar los problemas puntualizados, y de precisas y evaluar las estrategias que utiliza cada uno de los traductores de acuerdo con la naturaleza de cada traducción.

Abstract The present article attempts to analyze the particularities of the practice of literary translation from a language of peripheral culture to a language of central culture, based on the case of Korean literature. Because of the inequality that governs the relations between the two cultures involved, the transfer from one to the other raises extratextual problems. After briefly tracing the history of the translation of Korean literary works into widely spoken languages, especially in the French-speaking communities, this paper deals with the specific characteristics and modalities of this activity, as well as with their influence on the translations itself, focusing on the choice of works to be translated, the distinctive features of their translators, the translation processes they implement and the socio-cultural context in which the translation is done.

Translatorial agencies have gained wider currency in contemporary translation studies. Efforts have been made to delve into it from both translators' individual habits and the contextual elements of their work. But there is still relatively little work done on the variety of translatorial agencies exercised in different actual working conditions. Drawing on available studies and archival primary sources, this article tries to look into the development of translatorial agencies over time and space by uncovering the translator Sidney Shapiro's changeable textual, paratextual and extratextual agency in different translation networks in which he had been involved. The central argument of the article is that the extent to which translatorial agencies are influenced by other actors in the same network depends on whether the translator has the chance, ability, and willingness to negotiate with them.

Postmodernism charges that sociological methods project ways of thinking and being from the past onto the future, and that sociological forms of presentation are rhetorical defenses of ideologies. Postmodernism contends that sociological theory presents reified constructs no more based in reality than are fictional accounts. Kenneth Burke's logology predates and adequately addresses postmodernism's valid charges against sociology. At the same time, logology avoids the idealistic tendencies and ethical pitfalls of radical forms of postmodernist deconstruction, which acknowledge neither pre-textual and extratextual worlds nor the ways in which experience is embodied. While not fully articulated, Burke's logology gives primacy to an embodied, social world prior to text (Body-as-World). Sociology can strengthen both its theoretical arsenal and its response to postmodernism by reacknowledging and reclaiming Burke's logology.

The study examines how a Transylvanian nobleman, Gáspár Kornis of Göncruszka (1641–1683), created a narrative concerning four generations of his family. Though in his memoir, a patrilineal lineage scheme dominates, a close reading of scattered family documents also provides insights into the practices of horizontal bonding among relatives. The letters and last wills reflect the life cycle changes and represent emotional relationships among family members. By considering the act of writing as an emotional practice, the essay tests the claims of the memoir with the help of other archival and extratextual sources. What were the narrated roles of heroized protagonists, and what were the everyday duties of noble heads of family in the early modern period? The study depicts the transformations of the family network during crisis situations in the Transylvanian Principality.

Since the beginning of his writing career, John Updike has been considered by many as one of the most prominent American authors of our time and his language and subject matter have attracted many readers world wide. Notwithstanding, it appears that the Slovenes have failed to notice his literary merits as there has never been a real critical response to him or his work and as only a few works have been rendered into Slovene. One of the reasons which could account for the scarcity of translations and critical material is Updike's employment of extratextual information which is specific to the American milieu and thus to the Slovene society. Thiarticle offers an overview of the translations and critical material on Updike in Slovenia and highlights Updike's references to the USA on the examples taken from the translations of Rabbit, Run and Rabbit Redux.

The article examines lexical choices preferred by a noted Slovene translator of dramatic texts. It is based on the assumption that in spite of the fact that lexical choices offer much greater freedom in translation than, for instance, grammatical choices, they are subject to a number of intratextual and extratextual factors defining the genre, the kind of translation, and specific features of individual plays. Although examples are taken from only one set of translations of Tennessee Wiliams’s A Streetcar Named Desire, they also refer to other working and published versions of drama translations into Slovene, including Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Miller’s Death of a Salesman, Pinter’s plays, and Shaw’s Pygmalion. The shifts considered in the article relate to register, i.e. factors of language variation affecting lexical choices related to the field, mode, and tenor of discourse.

Although common sense and connotative knowledge come naturally to most people, computers still struggle to perform well on tasks for which such extratextual information is required. Automatic approaches to sentiment analysis and irony detection have revealed that the lack of such world knowledge undermines classification performance. In this article, we therefore address the challenge of modeling implicit or prototypical sentiment in the framework of automatic irony detection. Starting from manually annotated connoted situation phrases (e.g., “flight delays,” “sitting the whole day at the doctor’s office”), we defined the implicit sentiment held towards such situations automatically by using both a lexico-semantic knowledge base and a data-driven method. We further investigate how such implicit sentiment information affects irony detection by assessing a state-of-the-art irony classifier before and after it is informed with implicit sentiment information.

French banlieue literature written by immigrant and ‘post-migration’ writers often involves a paradoxical mix of both ‘high’ and ‘low’ language varieties – use of slang alternating with poetic utterances – as well as references to popular culture alternating with ‘high culture’, which may range from American movies to intertextual references to canonized authors. What is the extratextual message of this intriguing mix, what do the predominantly young writers aim at, and what audience do they address in this way? By distinguishing four different strategies, this article argues that this hybrid blend is intended to act as a signal to the French reader, and thus indirectly to publishers and critics, that the writers conform to national standards and values, show full integration into French society, and therefore are entitled to claim a legitimate place in the French literary field.
