ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Mixed flow fans find application in an operating region between that of axial flow and centrifugal fans. The candidate investigated the working of these mixed flow fans and formulated a design algorithm. The algorithm was based on work done by previous authors, most of which have tried to modify existing axial flow fan design methods to suit the mixed flow case. A fan was designed, built and tested. Tests showed that the fan did not perform as designed, producing a lower pressure rise at a lower flow rate. A five hole probe was used to measure the exit flow vector and the results showed that most of the work was done by the lower half of the blade. Based on this discrepancy between the designed and actual fan performance, a number of changes to the design procedure were recommended. Amongst other things: the use of numerical blade modelling procedures instead of modified cascade correlations and the disregard of the Coriolis work in the design of the blade shape.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The majority of power stations in South Africa are located in coal rich, but arid regions where wet-cooled condenser systems are not feasible from an environmental and economic perspective. Consequently the focus on power generation cooling has shifted towards dry-cooling systems using air-cooled steam condensers (ACSC). The steam passing through the ACSC units is cooled by an air-draught, mechanically induced by large diameter axial flow fans. Consequently the effectiveness of the cooling is impacted by the performance of these fans, which ultimately affects the overall efficiency of the power plant. However, due to the large diameters (> 10 m) of these fans, their performance is predicted based on small scale test results using the fan scaling laws. The objective of this project was to develop a methodology which accurately predicts the fan performance of more than one fan configuration using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and validating the results with experimental tests. Four fans were considered in this study of which three were scaled fan models of large air-cooled axial fans. The performance of the scaled fan models (L1-, L2- and N-fan) were measured in a type A, BS 848 standard fan test facility. The geometries of the fans were scanned three-dimensionally to obtain the models for simulation purposes. The other fan considered was an 8- bladed axial fan designed by Bruneau (1994) and referred to as the B-fan. Simulations were carried out for the L2-, N- and B-fan for different computational domains while implementing the multiple reference frames (MRF) and steady RANS approach. Three variations of the k-ε turbulence model were also investigated. Noticeable differences were found between the experimental and numerical results of the B-fan. Good correlations between the numerical and experimental fan static pressure, fan power and fan static efficiency were found for the two scaled model fans over a large operating range. The performance of the full scale fans, however, did not correlate well with the performance of the scaled models. It is concluded that accurate simulations of axial fans are possible although these domains require a large number of mesh elements. It is recommended that further research is carried out to investigate the relationship between full scale and small scale fan models.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die meerderheid steenkool kragstasies in Suid-Afrika is geleë in droë, maar steenkool ryke streke waar natverkoelde kondensor stelsels uit ʼn omgewings en ekonomiese perspektief nie geskik is nie. Die fokus in kragopwekking verkoeling het dus verskuif na droë-verkoelings stelsels en spesifiek die gebruik van lugverkoelde stoomkondensors (LVSKs). Die stoom in LVSK eenhede word verkoel deur atmosferiese lug wat meganies geïnduseer word deur groot aksiaalvloeiwaaiers. Die effektiwiteit van die verkoelingsproses word gevolglik beïnvloed deur die werksverrigting van hierdie waaiers wat uiteindelik die algehele effektiwiteit van die kragstasie beïnvloed. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Axial flow fans used in large-scale air-cooled steam condensers (ACSCs) may operate under distorted inflow conditions. These conditions occur due to the prevailing wind conditions, the presence of buildings, and the location of the fan within the ACSC. Fans located on the periphery of the ACSC are affected the most due to their exposure to strong winds and the inner fans drawing in air past them. Distorted inflow conditions cause varying fan blade and gearbox loading conditions. The purpose of the investigation was to simultaneously measure the inlet air flow and the resultant blade and gearbox loading conditions of a single fan located on the periphery of a large-scale ACSC. Inlet and heat exchanger bundle outlet air flow velocities were measured using a combination of ultrasonic and propeller anemometers while blade loading was measured with strain gauges attached at the neck of the specific blade being monitored. Strain gauges were also attached to the low-speed fan shaft to measure gearbox loading. Measurements were recorded over a period of 8 days where it was found that increased wind resulted in increased air flow in the axial direction of the fan, which then caused a reduction in average blade loading. This was due to a decreased static pressure rise over the fan. The fan blade was found to vibrate at its own natural frequency of 6 Hz when excited by the variable aerodynamic loading. The aerodynamic loading was extracted from the measured data and was found to correlate well with previous experimental work performed by Bredell et al. (2006a). Shaft bending stresses and torque were found to oscillate at the fan’s rotational frequency of 2Hz with a large torque exerted on the shaft during fan start-up.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Aksiaalvloeiwaaiers wat by groot lugverkoelde stoomkondensors gebruik word, werk dikwels onder verwronge inlaat lugvloei toestande wat geskied as gevolg van heersende winde, die teenwoordigheid van geboue en die posisie van die waaier in die kondensor. Waaiers wat geleë is op die rand van die kondensor word die meeste beïnvloed as gevolg van blootstelling aan die sterk winde en dwarsvloei wat deur die binneste waaiers geïnduseer word. Daar is ontdek dat die waaierlem teen ’n natuurlike frekwensie van 6 Hz vibreer wanneer dit opgewek word deur die wisselende aerodinamiese belasting. Die aerodinamiese belasting is verkry uit die gemete data en vergelyk goed met die numeriese werk van Bredell et al. (2006a). ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The ultimate goal of this project is to ensure a better understanding of the governing mechanisms present when flow distorting components are installed in close proximity of an axial flow fan. The effect of different parameters on the operation of axial flow fans is investigated. These parameters are divided into flow enhancing and flow reduction effects. The performance of an axial flow fan can be enhanced by changing the tip clearance, by adding a solid disc to the hub of the fan or by varying the number of fan blades. Flow reductions are caused by components such as inlet grids, walkways and their supporting structures, heat exchangers and windwalls. The effects of flow enhancing components are measured and compared to the results of other authors. The sensitivity of these effects to parameters such as the type of fan rotor and the specific system in which the rotor is installed is highlighted. The system effect (the interaction between the fan rotor and flow resistances in close proximity of each other) of individual components, as well as the combination of different components, is predicted both theoretically and experimentally. These predictions are compared to measured data relevant to the components in an installation where the system effects are present. The results are correlated to the kinetic energy flux coefficient of the flow at different locations within the installation. Experimental data obtained from a full scale unit (inlet shroud diameter of 9,216 m) are used to compare to scaled data from the model (inlet shroud diameter of 1,542 m). The hub to tip ratio of the axial flow fans investigated is 0,15. The most important conclusions are that the performance of the type of axial flow fan under investigation can be improved by reducing its tip clearance and by installing a solid disc to the downstream side of the rotor. An increase in the number of blades of the fan leads to only marginal improvements in the fan performance. The overall performance of the system can also be improved by removing some of the flow resisting components, or by changing their relative positions. All these conclusions are based on the assumption that the power input to the fan rotor remains constant.

The purpose of this research was a proof of concept using a fan motor stator as transducer to monitor motor rotor and attached axial fan for mechanical motion. The proof was to determine whether bearing faults and fan imbalances could be detected in vane-axial fans using Motor Electrical Signature Analysis (MESA). The data was statistically analyzed to determine if the MESA systems could distinguish between baseline conditions and discrete fault frequencies for the three test conditions: bearing inner race defect, bearing outer race defect, and fan imbalance. The statistical conclusions for these proofs of concept were that MESA could identify all three faulted conditions.

Fan vibration has become a significant issue in telecommunications environments due to increased performance and heat of internal components requiring greater airflow and higher speed fans. This thesis investigates fan vibration problems in telecommunications equipment and develops solutions to the problem in a retrofit scenario. A target value for vibration levels was determined by measuring vibration levels in an alternate existing product that exhibited no wear issues over a span of several years. Two successful vibration isolator designs were developed and implemented. The retrofit solution required minimal changes to the legacy design and achieved a large vibration reduction. The ultimate solution required extensive changes to the legacy design and achieved significant vibration reductions, with vibration levels below the target value in most scenarios. Both designs are Patent Pending.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A design routine was derived for designing a series of rotor-only axial flow fans. The routine was applied by designing two different series of axial flow fans. The first design was for a general application rotor-only axial flow fan. This fan series was designed, built and tested in co-operation with Howden Air Industries for both research and commercial purposes. The second design was for a low-noise fan series, which was designed, built and tested by the University of Stellenbosch for research purposes only. The design theory used the principle of blade cropping, meaning that one blade was designed to fit all the different fan sizes. The fan series was designed for diameters ranging from 3 15 mm to 1000 mm. The fan rotors were designed to conform to a velocity profile of minimum exit kinetic flux. The general application fan design was concentrated around the popular fan diameter sizes of 500 rnm, 560 mm and 630 mm and a rotor speed of 1440 rpm, using a commercially available fan series as reference. The low-noise fan design concentrated on one fan size only, namely 630 mm, while also making use of the principle of forward blade sweep. The remaining fan design principles stayed the same as for the general application fan design. The F-series airfoils were used as blade sections for both fan designs. Both fan series were tested for fan noise and performance in accordance with the BS 848 Standards part 1 (1980) and 2 (1985). A selection of fan diameter sizes was tested for the general application fan to verify its perfo!"mance over a range of fan sizes. This indicated a fan series with a wide range of efficient operation, including excellent noise characteristics. A 630 mm diameter fan was used to test the low-noise fan series. It showed both high efficiency and low noise characteristics. The reduction in fan noise achieved with the low-noise fan does not justi1)' the amount of work and costs involved in the designing process, compared to the general application fan.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A numerical procedure for predicting the effect of inlet flow distortions on the performance of axial flow fans is proposed. The study is aimed specifically at fans of low solidity and low hub-to-tip ratios, which have attained some importance with the advent of large directly air-cooled power stations in certain arid regions of the world. The numerical model is an extension to cylindrical polar coordinates of the SIMPLEN algorithm that has been developed by the author previously. The algorithm is implemented in a computer code, FLOVAX, which solves the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, augmented by the k-Ɛ model of turbulence, on a computational domain that is aligned with the cylindrical polar coordinate system. Several relatively simple flow problems are solved to verify the code: laminar stagnation flow, laminar flow near a rotating disk, turbulent flow near a propeller, turbulent flow through an abrupt axisymmetric expansion, and turbulent swirling flow in an annulus. Good agreement is obtained between the numerical solutions and the corresponding analytical, empirical or published experimental and numerical results. Some experimental results are also presented: measurements of shaft power, volume flow rate and static pressure rise were taken in a setup comprising an axial flow fan mounted in the wall of a wind tunnel. The wind tunnel was used to provide flow across the fan intake, thus establishing distorted inflow conditions. Detailed measurements of the velocity and static pressure distributions in the duct downstream of the fan rotor were also performed. It is clear from the results that flow across the intake of the test fan has a detrimental effect on its performance in that an increased amount of power is necessary to deliver the same flow rate as with no crossflow. In the numerical predictions, blade element theory is used to model the thrust and torque exerted by the fan blades on the air. The numerical results generally confirm the results of the experiment, although the increase in power is underestimated: an increase of only approximately half of the measured increase is predicted. Several recommendations for improvement of the numerical procedure are made.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: 'n Numeriese prosedure vir die voorspelling van die invloed van versteurings in inlaatvloei op die werking van aksiaalwaaiers word daargestel. Die studie is spesifiek gemik op waaiers van lae soliditeit en lae lempunt-tot-naafverhoudings. Waaiers van hierdie tipe het belangrikheid verwerf sedert die onlangse totstandkoming van groot lugverkoelde kragstasies in sekere droe werelddele. Die numeriese model is 'n uitbreiding na silindriese poolkoordinate van die SIMPLEN-algoritme wat voorheen deur die skrywer ontwikkel is. Die algoritme word geimplementeer in 'n rekenaarkode, FLOVAX, wat die onsamedukbare Navier-Stokes-vergelykings, aangevul deur die k-Ɛ-turbulensiemodel, oplos op 'n berekeningsgebied wat saamval met die silindriese poolkoordinaatstelsel. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The causes of disturbances in the flow patterns at the inlets of axial flow fans that are used in mechanical draft cooling towers and the effects of these disturbances on the fans, were investigated. A scale model of a part of a mechanical draft cooling tower used at a power station was built for the purpose of this study. In the cooling tower the axial flow fans are arranged in a matrix configuration. It was noted from the scale model that the boundary fan was subjected to the worst inlet disturbances and this had an adverse effect on the flow it produced. Geometric alterations like the use of guide vanes and rounded inlets improved the flow through the boundary fan considerably. It was found that the performance of the fans is a function of the number of fans used and the elevation of the fans. Several tests to determine the performance of the cooling tower confirmed the results obtained from the experiments on the scale model. It was also found that the speed and direction of the prevailing wind have a significant effect on the cooling tower. Experiments to investigate the effects of cross-flow at the inlet of a fan indicated an increased flow through the fan at low cross-flow velocities and that the flow decreased at high cross-flow velocities.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die invloed en oorsake van versteurde inlaatvloeipatrone op aksiaalwaaiers wat in meganiese-trek koeltorings gebruik word is ondersoek. 'n Skaaimodel van 'n deel van 'n meganiese-trek koeltoring wat by 'n kragstasie gebruik word is gebou vir die doel van die studie. Die aksiaalwaaiers wat in die koeltoring gebruik word is in 'n matrikskonfigurasie gerangskik. Vanaf die skaalmodel is waargeneem dat die randwaaier die ergste versteuring by die inlaat ervaar, en gevolglik minder vloei as die res van die waaiers in die opstelling lewer. Die vloei deur die randwaaier is verbeter deur verskillende geometriese wysigings soos leilemme en inlaatafrondings aan te bring. Daar is gevind dat die werking van die waaiers in die opstelling 'n funksie van die hoeveelheid waaiers asook die grondvryhoogte is. Om die werking van die koeltoring te bepaal is verskillende toetse daarop uitgevoer. Die resultate het die geldigheid van die skaalmodel bevestig. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this project is to investigate the method and accuracy of simulating axial ow fans with three-dimensional axisymmetric CFD models. Two models are evaluated and compared with experimental fan data. Veri cation data is obtained from a prototype fan tested in a facility conforming to the BS 848 standards. The ow eld over the blade surfaces is investigated further with a visualization experiment comprising of a stroboscope and wool tufts. Good correlation is found at medium to high ow rates and recommendations are made for simulation at lower ow rates as well as test guidelines at the fan test facility. The results and knowledge gained will be used to amend currently used actuator disc theory for axial ow fan simulation.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van hierdie projek is om die metode en akkuraatheid om aksiaalvloeiwaaiers met drie-dimensionele BVM modelle te simuleer, te ondersoek. Veri- kasie data is verkry vanaf 'n prototipe waaier wat in 'n fasiliteit getoets is en wat aan die BS 848 standaarde voldoen. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The use of air-cooled steam condensers (ACSCs) is the preferred cooling method in the chemical and power industry due to stringent environmental and water use regulations. The performance of ACSCs is however highly dependent on the influence of windy conditions. Research has shown that the presence of wind reduces the performance of ACSCs. It has been found that cross-winds (wind perpendicular to the longest side of the ACSC) cause distorted inlet flow conditions, particularly at the upstream peripheral fans near the symmetry plane of the ACSC. These fans are subjected to what is referred to as '2-D' wind conditions, which are characterised by flow separation on the upstream edge of the fan inlets. Experimental investigations into inlet flow distortion have simulated these conditions by varying the fan platform height. Low platform heights resulted in higher levels of inlet flow distortion, as also found to exist with high cross-wind speeds. This investigation determines the performance of various fan configurations (representative of configurations used in the South- African power industry) subjected to distorted inlet flow conditions through experimental and numerical investigations. The similarity between platform height and cross-wind effects is also investigated and a correlation between system volumetric effectiveness, platform height and cross-wind velocity is found.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die gebruik van lugverkoelde stoom kondensors (LVSK's) word verkies as 'n verkoelingsmetode in die chemiese- en kragvoorsieningsindustrie as gevolg van streng omgewings- en waterverbruiksregulasies. Die werkverrigting van LVSK's word egter grootliks beïnvloed deur die teenwoordigheid van wind. Navorsing het gewys dat die teenwoordigheid van wind die werkverrigting van LVSK's verminder. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A design methodology for low pressure rise, rotor only, ducted axial flow fans is formulated, implemented and validated using the operating point specifications of a 1/6th scale model fan as a reference. Two experimental fans are designed by means of the design procedure and tested in accordance with British Standards 848, Type A. The design procedure makes use of the simple radial equilibrium equations, embodied in a suite of computer programs. The experimental fans have the same hub-tip ratio and vortex distribution, but differ in the profile section used. The first design utilises the well known Clark-Y aerofoil profile whilst the second takes advantage of the high lift characteristics of the more modern NASA LS series. The characteristics of the two designs are measured over the entire operating envelope and compared to the reference fan from which the utility and accuracy of the design procedure is assessed. The performance of the experimental fans compares well with both the reference fan as well as the design intent.

Le développement de machines à forte vitesse spécifique et de taille réduite en régime subsonique suscite actuellement une forte demande dans de nombreux domaines industriels. Les machins à rotors contrarotatifs largement étudiées en aéronautique constituent une alternative efficace aux machines conventionnelles offrant de nombreux avantages : réduction de la vitesse de rotation, de l'encombrement radial et une grande flexibilité d'utilisation. Cependant, leur utilisation dans des applications subsoniques courantes nécessite une meilleure compréhension de leur fonctionnement et notamment de l'interaction inter-rotors pour mieux les concevoir. Ce travail a pour objectif d'étudier et de caractériser expérimentalement un étage contrarotatif fonctionnant en conduit, conçu avec le code de conception et d'analyse pour rotor et rotor-stator, MFT auquel on a implémenté une méthode de conception simple et rapide pour dessiner le rotor aval. On analyse en particulier l'effet de la distance axiale entre les rotors et l'effet du rapport de leur vitesse. Il met en évidence une nette amélioration des caractéristiques et du rendement global par rapport à une machine conventionnelle. Par ailleurs, plusieurs aspects de l'interaction entre les rotors sont constatés à travers des mesures locales à proximité des rotors. Le présent mémoire s'articule autour de quatre parties : conception d'un étage rotor-stator et d'un étage contrarotatif ; conception du dispositif expérimental normalisé, AERO²FANS pour les mesures de performances globales et locales instationnaires ; caractérisation et comparaison des deux étages et validation de la conception de MFT; enfin, étude des effets de la distance axiale et du rapport des vitesses sur les performances globales et locales.

As building codes and green building programs require tighter home construction, the need for outdoor air ventilation to improve indoor air quality increases. Major improvements in building envelopes and duct systems have led to decreases in heating and cooling loads causing fewer HVAC system run-time hours, and increasing the probability for air stagnation within homes with poor outdoor air ventilation. ASHRAE Standard 62.2 quantifies the amount of whole-house ventilation required based on the number of occupants and the square footage of conditioned space, but leaves the design of the ventilation system up to the mechanical engineer or HVAC contractor. In 2010, ASHRAE began requiring flow testing for confirmation of outdoor air ventilation rates, yet few municipalities and green building programs have adopted the new standard. Builders in mixed-humid climates are forced to balance the need for outdoor air ventilation with the upfront costs for mechanical ventilation systems, and the potential for increased humidity loads and energy costs associated with mechanical ventilation strategies. One common solution employed in the southeastern United States involves a central fan integrated supply (CFIS) ventilation system controlled with an air-cycler for minimum run-time to meet ASHRAE Standard 62.2. While this system has been tested and proven to meet design ventilation rates, those tests were often conducted on homes constructed by well trained builders receiving strong oversight from building scientists and the design ventilation rates were not always ASHRAE compliant. The following report analyzes whether the CFIS ventilation system with air-cycler controller provides ventilation meeting ASHRAE Standard 62.2 when employed by builders with minimal training and support.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Large air‐cooled heat exchangers and condensers make use of fan arrays to provide cooling. The performance of the fan arrays are however negatively affected by distorted inlet conditions. Given the size of these fans, quantifying exactly what the detrimental effects are is practically impossible. This serves as motivation for developing a scaled multi‐fan testing platform that is able to mimic the behaviour of a full‐scale array but at a more measureable and manageable scale. This investigation was conducted in two parts. A Reynolds number investigation was conducted to determine what effect incorporating Reynolds number effects will have on the scaled fan performance. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to determine where turbulent transition onset occurs on the full‐scale fan blades and trip wires were then sized and positioned appropriately to recreate the same transition effect. From this initial investigation it was found that the trip wires have an allround negative impact on fan performance but when compensated for by increasing the blade angle, the tripped fan static pressure rise performance is comparable with the non‐tripped fan performance. This suggests that the Reynolds number effects may be ignored for this scaled fan testing investigation. Scaled equivalents of the fans in cooling arrays were tested in a three row multi‐fan array which, using symmetry, represents a typical bay in a full‐scale installation. Various platform heights were simulated and the corresponding decrease in system performance was compared to a model formulated to predict how fan volumetric effectiveness decreases with platform height. The model deviated from the test data at very low platforms heights. A replacement fan for the scaled equivalent fan was tested while installed as the edge fan of a multi‐fan array, the fan worst affected by any inlet disturbance, and was found to perform similarly to the scaled equivalent fan for most platform heights but exceeded the scaled equivalent fan’s performance for the lowest platform height and the most adverse conditions. This proves the effectiveness of the replacement fan as an edge fan.

Gelykwaardige skaalwaaiers van die wat in bedryf is in volskaal opstellings was getoets in ‘n drie ry multi‐waaier opstelling wat, deur simmetrie, verteenwordigend is van ‘n tipiese straat in ‘n volskaal opstelling. Verskeie platformhoogtes was gesimuleer en die ooreenstemmende afname in stelsel verrigting was vergelyk met ‘n model wat geformuleer is juis om te voorspel hoe die volumetriese effektiwiteit afneem met platformhoogte. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation is basically a summary, with some interpretation, of published research by the author. The scope is limited to the fields of turbo-machinery, computational fluid dynamics and solar chimney power plants. The main contribution in the field of turbo-machinery in general is in the development of a through-flow method that automatically satisfies mass conservation. Concerning fan design, the contributions are the realization of the importance of the exit kinetic energy in the determination of the efficiency of rotor-only axial flow fans, and the quantification of the effect of off-axis inflow into cooling system fans on their performance. In the field of centrifugal fans and compressors an original, unifying model for the prediction of slip factor was developed. To investigate accident scenarios in closed cycle gas turbine nuclear reactors, all possible operational modes of multi-stage axial compressor operation caused by flow and rotation direction were investigated experimentally and computationally. Spanning the fields of turbo-machinery and solar chimneys, the basic theory of solar chimney turbines was developed, showing that high turbine efficiency was possible. In the field of solar chimneys, an original thermodynamic approach was developed to predict the main relationships that govern solar chimney performance, and to solve the through-flow equations for non-ideal systems with losses. Equations for the accurate determination of all the thermodynamic variables in a solar chimney as dependent on chimney height, wall friction, additional losses, internal drag and area change were derived and solved. Coefficients of wall friction, bracing wheel loss and exit kinetic energy were determined experimentally, and empirical equations were developed to predict the loss coefficient of the collector to turbine transition section and and the turbine inlet flow angle. A simple power law approach allowed the calculation of the optimal turbine pressure drop in solar chimney power plants. A comparison of two sets of equations used to calculate the heat fluxes into, inside and leaving the solar collector, resulted in similar air temperature rises in the collector, and similar produced power. It turned out however that the optimal flow for minimal turbine pressure drop was dependent on the heat transfer models. Investigation of the performance of various solar chimney turbo-generator layouts using analytical models and optimisation techniques showed that the optimal number of turbines varies with plant size, but the individual turbine size, the number of blades and even the efficiency remains close to constant. It was found that the cost of a turbogenerator system, however, varies significantly with size. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie verhandeling is basies ’n opsomming, met interpretasie, van gepubliseerde navorsing deur die outeur. Die omvang is beperk tot die gebiede van turbomasjinerie, berekeningsvloeidinamika en sonskoorsteenkragstasies. Die hoof bydrae op die gebied van turbomasjinerie in die algemeen is in die ontwikkeling van ’n deurvloeimetode wat outomaties massabehoud bevredig. Wat waaierontwerp betref is die bydrae die besef van die belangrikheid van die uitlaat kinetiese energie in die bepaling van waaierbenuttingsgraad, en die kwantifisering van die effek van af-as invloei in verkoelingswaaiers op hulle gedrag. Op die gebied van sentrifugaalwaaiers en -kompressors is ’n oorspronklike, samevattende model vir die voorspelling van glipfaktor ontwikkel. Om ongeluk-scenario’s in geslote kringloop gasturbine kenreaktors te ondersoek is al die moontlike werksmodusse veroorsaak deur vloei en rotasie rigting van ’n multistadium aksiaalkompressor eksperimenteel en numeries ondersoek. As brug tussen turbomasjinerie en sonskoorstene is die basiese teorie van sonskoorsteenturbines ontwikkel met die aanduiding dat hoë turbine benuttingsgraad moontlik is. Op die gebied van sonskoorstene is ’n oorspronklike termodinamies benadering ontwikkel om die hoofverwantskappe te voorspel wat sonskoorsteen gedrag bepaal, en om die deurvloei vergelykings op te los vir nie-ideale stelsels met verliese. Vergelykings vir die akkurate bepaling van al die termodinamiese veranderlikes in ’n sonskoorsteen soos afhanklik van skoorsteenhoogte, wandwrywing, bykomstige verliese, interne sleur en oppervlakte verandering is afgelei en opgelos. Koëffisiënte vir wandwrywing, verstywingswiel-verlies en uitlaat kinetiese energie is eksperimenteel bepaal, en empiriese vergelykings is ontwikkel om die verlieskoëffisiënt van die kollektor-tot-skoorsteen oorgang en die turbine inlaatvloeihoek te bepaal. ’n Eenvoudige magswet benadering het dit mootlik gemaak om die optimum turbine-drukval in sonskoorsteen aanlegte te bepaal. ’n Verglyking van twee stelle vergelykings om warmtevloede in, binne en uit die sonkollektor te bereken het gelei na soortgelyke temperatuurstygings en gelewerde drywing. Die optimale vloei vir maksimum drywing was egter afhanklik van die warmteoordrag modelle. Ondersoek van die gedrag van verskeie turbo-generator uitlegte, deur gebruik van analitiese modelle en optimeringstegnieke het getoon dat die optimale aantal turbines wissel met aanleg grootte, maar die individuele turbine grootte, die aantal lemme en selfs die benuttingsgraad bly feitlik konstant. Daar is egter gevind dat die koste van ’n turbogenerator stelsel beduidend wissel met grootte. ’n Gesamentlike artikel met verskeie Duitse universiteite en instansies het ’n vergelykende koste analise van sonskoorstene gedoen.

The motivation for this research is the need to improve performance of the autonomous flight of a tailsitter UAV. Tailsitter aircraft combine the hovering and vertical take-off and landing capability of a rotorcraft with the long endurance flight capability of a fixed-wing aircraft. The particular aircraft used in this research is the V-Bat, a tailsitter UAV with a conventional wing and the propeller and control surfaces located within a ducted-fan tail assembly. This research focuses on identifying the models and parameters of the V-Bat in hover and level flight as a basis for the design of the control systems for hover, level, and transition modes of flight.Models and parameters were identified from experimental data. Wind-tunnel tests, bench tests, and flight tests were performed in a variety of flight conditions. Wind tunnel tests yielded force and moment coefficients over the full flight envelope of the V-Bat. Models and parameters for longitudinal, lateral, and hover flight are presented. Bench tests were conducted to enhance understanding about the ducted-fan propulsion system and the effectiveness of the control surfaces. The thrust characteristics of the ducted fan were measured. Control derivatives were derived from force and moment measurements. Flight tests were completed to obtain dynamic models of the V-Bat in hover flight. Using frequency-domain system identification methods, frequency-response and transfer function models of roll, pitch, and yaw responses to aileron, elevator, and rudder control input were derived.The results obtained from these experimental tests were used to identify models and parameters of the V-Bat aircraft, giving insight into its behavior and enhancing the control analysis and simulation capabilities for this aircraft, thus providing the increased levels of understanding needed for autonomous flight.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Air-cooled steam condensers (ACSCs) are used in the power generation industry to directly condense turbine exhaust steam in areas where cooling water is expensive or unavailable. Large axial flow fans force ambient air through A-frame heat exchanger bundles made up of a number of rows of finned tubes through which the steam is ducted and consequently condensed during the heat transfer process to the air. The heat rejection rate or performance of an ACSC is proportional to the air mass flow rate, determined by fan volumetric performance, and the temperature difference between the finned tubes and the air. The air flow through a 30 fan ACSC (termed the generic ACSC) operating under windy conditions is solved using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT and the required data is extracted from the solution to calculate performance trends. It is found that fan performance is reduced due to a combination of factors. The first is additional upstream flow losses caused by separated flow occurring primarily at the leading edge of the ACSC and secondarily at the fan bellmouth inlets. The second factor leading to reduced fan performance is the presence of distorted flow conditions at the fan inlets. Hot plume air recirculation is responsible for decreased ACSC thermal performance due to increased fan inlet air temperatures. It is found that reduced fan performance is the greater contributor to reduced ACSC performance. The performance effects of varying two geometrical parameters of the generic ACSC, namely the fan platform height and the windwall height, are investigated under windy conditions. It is found that each parameter is linked to a specific mechanism of performance reduction with the fan platform height affecting fan performance and the windwall height affecting recirculation. The respective platform and windwall heights specified for the generic ACSC are found to provide acceptable performance results. To mitigate wind induced performance reductions a number of modification and additions to the ACSC are investigated. These primarily aim at improving fan performance and included the addition of walkways or skirts, the addition of wind screens beneath the fan platform, removing the bellmouth fan inlets, using different types of fans and increasing fan power. The addition of a periphery walkway and windscreens is considered to be the most practical methods of improving ACSC performance under windy conditions. The generic ACSC is modified to include both modifications and under high wind conditions the performance is found to increase measurably. The modifications also resulted in the ACSC performance being less sensitive to wind direction effects.

Die warmteoordragkapasiteit van die lugverkoelde stoom kondensator is eweredig aan die massavloei-tempo van die lug, wat bepaal word deur die waaierwerkverigting, en die temperatuur verskil tussen die vinbuise en die lug. Daar word ook bevind dat die onderskeie waaierplatform- and windwandhoogtes van die generiese lugverkoelde stoom kondensator, van so 'n aard is dat dit aanvaarbare werkverrigting tot gevolg het. Om verlaging in werksverrigting in winderige toestande te verminder is verskeie modifikasies en byvoegings tot die lugverkoelde stoom kondensator ondersoek wat primêr gemik is op verbetering in waaierwerkverigting. Die ondersoek dek die byvoeging van 'n loopvlak, die byvoeging van windskerms onder die waaierplatform, verwydering van die klokvormige waaier-inlate, die gebruik van verskillende waaiers en die verhoging van waaierdrywing. Daar was besluit dat die byvoeging van 'n loopvlak rondom die rand van die lugverkoelde stoom kondensator en die byvoeging van windskerms die mees praktiese manier was om die lugverkoelde stoom kondensator verigting te verbeter. In this study a centrifugal fan is studied for noise characteristics and measurements in a semi- anechoic room. A semi-anechoic room is constructed inside Fluid Mechanics Laboratory of Mechanical Engineering Department has been qualified with respect to ISO 3745 standard. The fan characteristic is obtained as proposed in AMCA standards 210-75, by simply measuring the voltage and current of the motor during operation and calculating the power consumption of the assembly. Noise measurements are taken using two microphones attached to a multi-channel data acquisition and processing system in the semi anechoic room. Several different configurations of the vacuum cleaner with some parts removed or replaced systematically are considered during the noise measurements. Some of the results showed that the damping material placed inside the motor cover is proved to be very effective in noise reduction. Two different damping materials are examined for comparative evaluation.

Multiple fans are sometimes used in an array configuration to cool various types of electronic equipment. In addition to adding another noise source, using two fans with closely spaced blade passage frequencies (BPF) can create an annoying beat frequency. A two fan array with each fan having a different BPF was considered. The fans were theoretically modeled at the BPF and first harmonics. Each fan has two acoustic paths to the far field. Thus, each fan was modeled as a two source array. The first control configuration consisted of one control filter using six control sources and six error sensors in a fully coupled control system designed to control both fans simultaneously. The second configuration used two independent controllers with three control sources and three error sensors, one controller per fan. Experimentally, the averaged narrow band reduction of the BPFs and the second harmonic of the two independent controllers were 15.6 and 7.4 dB respectively, compared to a reduction of 14.4 and 5.7 dB at the two frequencies using a single control loop. The results suggest that independent controllers perform better than the single control loop for the fan array studied. Optimization of active noise control systems has increased performance but sometimes with decreased robustness. Two control source configurations for the sound power reduction of a simple source were analyzed by modeling the control systems. The two control source configurations were four symmetric control sources surrounding the noise source and an optimized linear array of four control sources. Simulation results show the linear array control source configuration is more sensitive to microphone placement errors, with a 20-33 dB reduction in attenuation for a microphone placement error of 2 mm compared to a 0.8 dB drop in attenuation for the symmetric case. The linear array configuration was found to be more sensitive to the microphone placement errors compared to the symmetric configuration. A 2.5 mm change in one microphone position causes an average of 6 dB loss in attenuation for the linear array configuration compared to a 0.6 dB loss for the symmetric configuration.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Axial flow fan arrays form part of air-cooled steam condensers in direct drycooled power plants. This dissertation investigates the performance of axial flow fans when located at the perimeter of a fan array. The perimeter (or edge) fans may experience a reduction in air flow through the fan due to the prevalence of distorted inlet conditions upstream of the fan. The reduction in air flow leads to a reduction in the heat transfer capability of the steam condenser and a consequent reduction in the electricity output of the power plant. Due to the physical size of an air-cooled condenser, full-scale experiments are often impractical and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to model its performance under various conditions. To limit the size of the CFD model the axial flow fans in the CFD analysis are represented by means of simplified methods. Three different simplified methods are presented and applied to a CFD model of a single axial flow fan, namely the pressure jump method (PJM), actuator disc method (ADM) and extended actuator disc method (EADM). The results are compared to experimental values. The comparison highlights the limitations of the models: The ADM fails to model fan performance correctly at low flow rates, while the PJM ignores the variation in fan blade properties at different locations within the fan rotor. The EADM is presented as an improvement on both the other two models. A multiple fan test facility is constructed, consisting of three 630 mm diameter fans extracting air from a common inlet chamber. The inlet chamber is constructed in such a way that one of the three fans act as the perimeter (edge) fan. The floor of the inlet chamber can be adjusted to increase or reduce the inlet flow distortion experienced by the edge fan. Six different fan configurations are tested in the position of the edge fan and an empirical method is derived by which the volumetric effectiveness of an edge fan can be predicted. The experimental results are compared to CFD results for the same facility using the three different simplified simulation methods investigated previously. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements are also performed upstream of the edge fan and the velocity profiles at the inlet of the fan are compared to the profiles obtained numerically. The comparisons show that the EADM predicts the performance of the edge fan more accurately than the ADM en PJM. The effect of adding a walkway and removing the bell mouth upstream of the edge fan was investigated using the EADM. The results are used to show the location of the loss mechanisms upstream of the edge fan. The addition of a walkway moves the location of the pressure loss away from the edge fan bell mouth towards the edge of the walkway. Consequently the distortion directly upstream of the edge fan is reduced and its volumetric effectiveness increased. The effect of removing the edge fan’s bell mouth is similar to the effect of adding a walkway upstream of the edge fan.

Hierdie verhandeling ondersoek die werkverrigting van aksiaalwaaiers wat geleë is op die rand van ‘n groot waaiermatriks. Die randwaaiers kan ’n vermindering in deurvloei ondervind as gevolg van versteurde inlaattoestande stroom-op vanaf die waaier. Die vermindering in lugvloei lei tot ’n vermindering in die warmetoordagvermoë van die stoomkondensor en ’n gepaardgaande afname in die elektrisiteitslewering van die kragstasie. As gevolg van die fisiese grootte van die lugverkoelde kondensor is volskaalse eksperimente gewoonlik onprakties en word berekeningsvloeimeganika (BVM) gebruik om die werking van die aanleg onder verskeie toestande te modelleer. Ten einde die grootte van die BVM model te beperk, word die aksiaalwaaiers in so ‘n BVM analiese voorgestel met behulp van vereenvoudigde metodes. The noise (unwanted sound) from fans of all sizes, operating in close proximity to people, can be a design constraint due to annoyance or, in the worse cases, health damage. Of the total noise, aeroacoustic noise - produced by unsteadiness in the air - often represents a significant source and is intrinsically linked to the aerodynamic features of the flow field. In this work, the aeroacoustics of low-speed fans are investigated using a compact mixed-flow fan as a test case. The low-speed regime is less developed compared to large-scale, high-speed machines and is increasingly relevant to applications such as micro air vehicles, small wind turbines, and other environmental comfort technologies found in buildings or vehicles. The test case fan Reynolds number is of the order of 104 which is a couple of orders lower than those generally found in gas turbines. Its main sources are therefore best identified experimentally in the absence of proven alternative methods. In order to do this, a way of quantifying fan noise is developed in tandem with control of the aerodynamic operating point. Following a study of sources of the significant broadband and tonal noise, a low-order noise prediction scheme is developed and applied to predict tonal noise with reference to Reynolds number effects. The new, duct-based rig and method has several advantages over the existing sound power measurement rig built to the ISO 5136 standard at Dyson. The approach, which makes no assumptions about the relative power of different modes, has resulted in a rig that is much shorter. Unlike the ISO rig, it is capable of accurate narrow-band tone measurements with sources which excite strong non-plane-wave duct modes (as the modal structure of the sound is determined) for the frequencies of interest. Tests have been carried out at different operating points with a range of geometry modifications produced with 3D printing techniques. In terms of tonal sources which particularly impact sound quality, the mixed-flow impeller alone produces tones due to very high sensitivity to inflow distortion of the mean flow (giving unsteady blade loading). This means that the product inlet must be designed very carefully to optimally condition the flow. Periodicity in the impeller outlet flow produces rotor-stator interaction tones even with a number of guide vanes chosen to satisfy the Tyler-Sofrin theory cut-off criteria. This is thought to be due to abrupt radius change after the guide vanes in the rig (while the theory assumes constant radius). In the product, abrupt radius change also occurs. The sensitivity of the broadband level to inflow turbulence was confirmed to be low in the rig, although the in-product inflow appears much less ideal. The main broadband noise source in rig tests is suggested to be impeller self-noise as only small reductions in rotor-stator interaction noise are achieved with far fewer vanes. The low-order modelling scheme to understand the fundamental unsteady loading noise mechanism compares well to experiments for sample rotor-stator interaction tones. The velocity fluctuations which induce this noise, measured experimentally with a 2D hotwire, are shown to increase in intensity as Reynolds number is reduced towards 104. This is due to a higher importance of viscosity which can give boundary layers that are thicker and liable to laminar separation. Surface treatments such as boundary layer trips could be used to prevent such separation and potentially reduce noise. Based on the thesis findings, further tests, simulations and possible design modifications are suggested to understand and reduce the important noise sources.

För att identifiera komponenterna och deras vikter vägdes alla delar var för sig. Värdena visade att trumhus, lagerhus, axel och lagerpaket stod för ca 75 % av motorns totala vikt. Arbetet koncentrerades därför på att reducera vikten på dessa delar. Flera koncept togs fram med lägre vikt och bibehållen prestanda. Vissa delar kontrollerades mot hållfasthet med handberäkningar och FEM-analyser. Enligt beräkningarna finns möjlighet att reducera vikten med 45 %. Om hydraulmotorn konstrueras enligt koncepten, bör det framtida målet kunna nås, till-verkning av en lättviktsmotor som är betydligt lättare än dagens hydraulmotor.
The weight reducing possibilities for a hydraulic motor, produced by Parker Hannifin AB in Trollhättan, have been investigated. The goal was to provide suggestions for weight optimization to offer customers a light weight motor (LWM) that is well suited as a fan motor. The mass of each part was determined and their functions were identified. The result showed that the housings, shaft and bearings represented 75% of the motor’s total mass. The work was thus concentrated to these parts. Multiple suggestions were generated where weight and performance were taken into consideration. Some parts were analyzed with the aid of FEA-software and hand calculations. The result indicates that a weight reduction of 45% is possible. If the hydraulic motor is redesigned according to the concepts, the goal of a light weight motor can be achieved.

Avsikten med denna avhandling är att utvärdera den FE-modell som använts i modalanalyser av komponenten fan booster spool, framtagen och tillverkad av Volvo Aero Corporation, Trollhättan. Detaljen ingår i den civila flygplansmotorn GEnx som är utvecklad för flygplanet Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Inledande tester av spolen påvisade en mycket god korrelation mellan analys och test men när spolen senare provkördes i en komplett monterad motor noterades en uppenbar skillnad i resultat. Den andra noddiameterns egenfrekvenser indikerade att spolen i test hade ett något styvare beteende än vad som beräknats i analys.

En teori utvecklades som byggde på att en initiell kontakt mellan rotor och ett slitskikt på statorn kunde framkalla en förstyvande effekt på spolen när rotorn på grund av rotationslaster expanderar radiellt. Detta examensarbete initierades då för att undersöka om denna kontakt kunde inkluderas i FE-modellen och för att utreda om kontakten har en möjlighet att förstyva spolen.

Avhandlingen utvärderar FE-modellen med avseende på randvillkor, laster och modelleringsteknik i FE-programmet Ansys 10.0. En grundlig kartläggning av spolens känslighet påvisar en robust komponent med hög motståndskraft mot yttre och inre störningar.

En förstyvande effekt relaterad till en initiell kontakt mellan slitskikt och spole bekräftas i denna avhandling. Kontakten har visat sig ha särskild inverkan på den andra noddiametern och dess egenfrekvenser. Ett förslag på modelleringsteknik där den förstyvande effekten inkluderas har däremot inte föreslagits i detta arbete då effekten enligt uppgift går förlorad efter en inkörningsperiod.

Det har i detta arbete visats att det kommando som i Ansys tidigare använts för att kompensera för så kallade spin softening-effekter, kspin, resulterar i konservativa värden för spolens egenfrekvenser. En rekommendation baserad på de resultat som framkommit är därför att utesluta funktionen kspin i modalanalyser för denna komponent. Valet av sektorstorlek och kopplingsmetod mellan masselement och spole har också visats ha en tydlig inverkan på de beräknade egenfrekvenserna.

Spolens radiella förskjutningar har analyserats som funktion av rotationshastigheten. Resultatet visar att den hastighet då kontakt mellan tätningständer och spole etableras är nästintill identisk med den hastighet då töjningar först börjar uppträda i spolen enligt testdata från töjningsgivarprov.

Global challenges such as increasingly competitive markets, low-cost competition, shorter lead time demands, and high quality/value output are transforming the business model of the company to focus beyond the performance requirements. In order to meet these challenges, companies are highly concerned with the customer perceived value, which is to connect the product with the customer in a better way and become more proactive to fulfil the customer needs, via function-oriented business models and Product-Service Systems. In literature, the conceptual phase is distinguished as the most critical phase of the product development process. Many authors have recognized the improvement of design in the conceptual phase as the mean to deliver a successful product in the market. At the decision gate, where concepts are selected for further development, the design team needs knowledge/data about the long-term consequences of their early decision, to see how changes in design propagate to the entire lifecycle of the product. The main goal of the thesis is to describe how the design of Product-Service Systems in the conceptual phase can be improved through the use of a data-driven approach. The latter provides an opportunity to enhance decision making and to provide better support at the early development phase. The study highlights how data are managed and used in current industrial setting and indicates the room for improvement with current practices. The thesis further provides guidelines to efficiently use data into the modelling and simulation activities to increase design knowledge. As a result of this study, a data-driven approach emerged to support the early design decision.  The thesis presents initial descriptive study findings from the empirical investigations, showing a model-based approach that creates awareness about the value of a new design concept, thus acting as a key enabler to use data in design. This will create a link between the product engineering characteristic to the high-level attributes of customer satisfaction and provider’s long-term profitability. The preliminary results indicate that the application of simulation models to frontload the early design stage creates awareness about how performance can lead to value creation, helping multidisciplinary teams to perform quick trade-off and what-if analysis on design configurations. The proposed framework shows how data from various sources are used through a chain of simulations to understand the entire product lifecycle. The proposed approach holds a potential to improve the key performance indicators for Product-Service Systems development: lead time, design quality, cost and most importantly deliver a value-added product to the customer.

The diploma thesis deals with the analysis of problems of unevenly stratified air flow in air handling units and subsequent optimization with respect to speed ratios, energy efficiency and legislative requirements. Methods of solving the problem are theoretical and experimental, while the theoretical part deals with air distribution by means of air-conditioning fans with a focus on their aerodynamics, pressure conditions and other requirements, which are an integral part of properly designed equipment. In the experimental part of the thesis was applied a proposal of an innovative technical approach to a specific model of air conditioning assembly, which was implemented in the laboratories of the Institute of Building Services.

Owing to the ever-changing developments of battery and electric powertrain, vehicle electrification is the trend in the future. Without the presence of a combustion engine, masking effect from it reduces and noises from other components become perceivable. Among all, the cooling fan is one of the major noise sources. The design of cooling fan modules is usually carried out in the early stage before building prototype vehicles. Therefore, it is essential to come up with a method for selecting optimal fan design without performing complete vehicle testing. This is a Master's degree project in collaboration with Volvo Cars, with a focus on cooling fan noise at the charging state of electric vehicles. The main objective of this thesis is to understand the effects of fan installation. Three different setups of acoustic measurement are carried out, namely free-space, wall-mounted, and in-vehicle measurement. Correlations of these measurements are investigated through comparisons of the measurement results and the installation effects are identified through spectrum difference between free-space and in-vehicle measurement. Moreover, the implementation of spectral decomposition method enables the separation of source strength and propagation effect. Analyses of sound pressure levels are studied by looking into tonal and broadband components. In addition, sound power levels are determined by following ISO standards. Finally, a subjective rating session is held to understand the human perception of cooling fan noise.
Med anledning av den pågående utvecklingen mot elektrifiering där bilarna går mot batterier och elmotorer för framdrivning så ändras ljudbilden. Utan förbränningsmotorer som tidigare maskerade mycket av ljudet från bilarna så framträder nya ljudkällor. En sådan är kylfläkten som allt mer blir en störningskälla. Vanligtvis sker designen av kylfläktsmodulen i en tidig fas innan det finns någon prototypbil att tillgå. Detta gör att det är viktigt att utveckla metoder för att i tidig fas kunna optimera designen av kylfläkten.  Detta är ett examensarbete i samarbete med Volvo Cars med fokus på det ljud som uppstår vid laddning av eldrivna bilar. Uppsatsens huvudsakliga mål är att förstå fläktinstallationens påverkan på ljud genom att korrelera olika typer av mätningar. Detta genomfördes m.h.a tre separata konfigurationer, fritt-upphängd mätning, väggmonterad och installerad i bil. Korrelation undersöktes genom att jämföra mätresultat och analys av spektrumet. Analysen av ljudtrycksnivåerna genom att titta på dels de tonala komponenterna men också på bredbandsnivåerna. Utöver detta fastställs även ljudeffekten genom att följa gängse ISO standard. Slutligen så gjordes en subjektiv utvärdering för att få en förståelse av upplevelsen av ljudet från en kylfläkt.

Purpose - This master thesis evaluates the hybrid-electric aircraft project E-Fan X with respect to its economical and environmental performance in comparison to its reference aircraft, the BAe 146-100. The E-Fan X is replacing one of the four jet engines of the reference aircraft by an electric motor and a fan. A turboshaft engine in the cargo compartment drives a generator to power the electric motor. --- Methodology - The evaluation of this project is based on standard aircraft design equations. Economics are based on Direct Operating Costs (DOC), which are calculated with the method of the Association of European Airlines (AEA) from 1989, inflated to 2019 values. Environmental impact is assessed based on local air quality (NOx, Ozone and Particulate Matter), climate impact (CO2, NOx, Aircraft-Induced Cloudiness known as AIC) and noise pollution estimated with fundamental acoustic equations. --- Findings - The battery on board the E-Fan X it is not necessary. In order to improve the proposed design, the battery was eliminated. Nevertheless, due to additional parts required in the new configuration, the aircraft is 902 kg heavier. The turboshaft engine saves only 59 kg of fuel. The additional mass has to be compensated by a payload reduced by 9 passengers. The DOC per seat-mile are up by more than 10% and equivalent CO2 per seat-mile are more than 16% up in the new aircraft. --- Research limitations - Results are limited in accuracy by the underlying standard aircraft design calculations. The results are also limited in accuracy by the lack of knowledge of some data of the project. --- Practical implications - The report contributes arguments to the discussion about electric flight. --- Social implications - Results show that unconditional praise given to the environmental characteristics of this industry project are not justified.

Outdoor heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) units emit a significant amount of noise, which may lead to poor sound quality and a perceived low product quality. It is the job of the noise control engineer to reduce the undesired noise and improve the sound quality of the outdoor HVAC unit to decrease consumer annoyance. There is great interest in developing a detailed and accurate acoustic model of the outdoor HVAC unit so that the sound of the outdoor HVAC unit can be listened to before the unit is constructed. Having an acoustic model which can synthesize sounds allows the noise control engineer to evaluate and improve the sound quality of the outdoor HVAC unit during the design process, without the need for extensive prototyping. Acoustical holography methods will be used to identify and localize noise due to the fan, and other significant noise sources, to visualize the sound field. In the current study, an acoustic model is described which can be used to model the noise due to structural radiation and vortex shedding of the outdoor HVAC unit’s rotating fan blades, one of the top contributors to the unit’s overall noise level. This moving source model simulates the Doppler effect which occurs when the blade moves towards and away from a receiver. The results from this moving source model is shown for different source signals, including sinusoidal, bandpass random, repeating random, and sinusoidal with time-varying frequency source signals. The parameters of this moving source model will be optimized to reproduce the experimental results, including the power spectral densities, tonal power component, and auralizations.
