Resumen En 1959 Miguel Fisac recibe el encargo para proyectar y construir un nuevo edificio industrial: los laboratorios farmacéuticos “Made”. Un año antes, Jaime Ferrater Ramoneda, joven arquitecto catalán recién afincado en Madrid, completará el proyecto para una nueva fábrica de elaboración de vermut “Martini y Rossi” en dicha localidad. Mientras que Fisac se encuentra en el cénit de su carrera profesional, Ferrater, sin embargo, comienza la suya con esta obra. Sin conexión aparente entre los autores,ambos confluyen en la misma línea a la hora de dar una solución compositiva al programa de necesidades que sus clientes demandan, aportando una nueva visión sincera y pragmática. Diez puntos comparativos entre ambos proyectos estructuran el artículo, consiguiendo demostrar la similitud conceptual que guardan estos dos magníficos ejemplos de arquitectura industrial madrileña.AbstractIn 1959 Miguel Fisac was engaged to project and construct a new industrial building: the pharmaceutical laboratories “Made”. One year earlier, Jaime Ferrater Ramoneda, a young Catalan architect settled in Madrid, completed in the same city a project for a new liquors manufacture building “Martini and Rossi”. While Fisac reached the zenith of his professional career, Ferrater on the other hand, was at his beginnings with this project. Apparently without any connections between the two creators, both chose a similar approach to resolve the constructive needs requested by their clients, by providing a new, sincere and pragmatic vision. The article contains 10 comparative points, which aim to prove the conceptual similarities of these two magnificent examples of industrial architecture in Madrid.

The aim of this paper is to study the second person pronoun in the poetry of Randall Jarrell and Gabriel Ferrater. The main thesis goes against the commonplace that holds that the second person pronoun is a mere trace dependent on the poetic I. As we shall demonstrate, the You is absent or evanescent, and its relation to I cannot be reciprocal but shifting. Since both poets were conspicuous literary critics this article first draws up an outline of the possible theoretical implications for selecting that voice. The commentary on their poems is divided into four sections taking up Genette’s concept of palimpsest. Based on a comparison of Ferrater’s “La cara” and Jarrell’s “The Face,” second person clues lead us to comment on the different reading conventions they could have considered before writing a poem. The third section analyzes the second person anchorage, conceived less as an imprisoning structure than as an impossibility of naming (reading) the You properly. Studies of “Well water” and “Si puc” show how naming things that are open to the senses is the only way we can indirectly glimpse, reconstruct or interpret the original relation between first and second person pronouns —a relation we cannot help thinking of as the real— rather than phantasmal —overlapping realism.

AbstractThis paper discusses the relationship between the theory of art and the philosophy of science. In particular, it explores Catalan poet and critic Gabriel Ferrater’s theory of ideas in poetry and specifically his critique of social or realist poetry. The paper shows, on the one hand, that Ferrater’s theory is both antiexpressionist and anti-inductivist, and on the other, that his way of approaching both poetry and criticism can be integrated into the falsationist theoretical framework developed by philosopher of science Karl Popper to understand the process of scientific discovery.

Abstract In recent years, interest in the presence of chemical and biological pollutants (drugs, pesticides, heavy metals etc.) in sewage water has been permanently increasing and, at the same time, significant effort to eliminate them has been shown. The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of ferrates activity on the decomposition of the drug diclofenac (DCF), which is commonly present in sewage water. The main task is to follow the effect of potassium ferrate dosage on DCF degradation and to evaluate the most effective ferrates concentration in solution. Subsequently, real samples of waste water containing a significant amount of various micro‑pollutants were treated by the same amount of ferrates as laboratory samples. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used for the sample analysis. Ferrates removal effectiveness was determined by comparing the chromatographic peak areas of residual DCF in the treated samples. Removal efficiency of diclofenac is proportional to the concentration of potassium ferrate in the treated solutions.

Ferrate ions are a highly oxidizing and unstable species that are challenging to quantify and analyze. They are, however, becoming increasingly recognized as an excellent candidate for a number of applications such as for water treatment. A wider acceptance of ferrates requires an accurate assay of the produced ferrates. We report on four analytical methods (existing and new) for quantification of ferrates and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. These methods include titrimetric analysis and spectrometric techniques such as direct colorimetric measurements of ABTS or NaI colorimetric. In terms of accuracy, the cost, simplicity, and time required the modified indirect UV-Vis NaI method is shown to be the most effective of all of the four methods investigated.

Abstract During last decades interest in ferrates(VI) has increased significantly. On one hand they serve as strong, non-toxic oxidants without harmful by-products and, on the other hand, as an efficient coagulant in both drinking and waste water treatment technology. In this work we focused on the electrochemical preparation of ferrate (VI) salts in eutectic low temperature molten sodium hydroxide - water mixture using pure iron anodes. Some information on the stability and kinetics of decomposition of sodium ferrate(VI) prepared by molten-system electrolysis is discussed. An assumption that electrochemically prepared ferrate(VI) in molten hydroxide media are stable enough to be used especially in the field of waste water treatment was confirmed by our observation.

Regarding environmental pollution, the greatest public and scientific concern is aimed at the pollutants listed under the Stockholm Convention. These pollutants are not only persistent but also highly toxic with a high bioaccumulation potential. One of these pollutants, γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH), has been widely used in agriculture, which has resulted in wide dispersion in the environment. Remediation of this persistent and hazardous pollutant is difficult and remains unresolved. Of the many different approaches tested, to date, none has used ferrates. This is unexpected as ferrates are generally believed to be an ideal chemical reagent for water treatment due to their strong oxidation potential and the absence of harmful by-products. In this paper, the degradation/transformation of HCHs by ferrates under laboratory conditions was studied. HCH was degraded during this reaction, producing trichlorobenzenes and pentachlorocyclohexenes as by-products. A detailed investigation of pH conditions during Fe(VI) application identified pH as the main factor affecting degradation. We conclude that ferrate itself is unreactive with HCH and that high pH values, produced by K2O impurity and the reaction of ferrate with water, are responsible for HCH transformation. Finally, a comparison of Fe(VI) with Fe(0) is provided in order to suggest their environmental applicability for HCH degradation.

The investigation presented here features the design of a cleaner and greener chemical process for the conversion of industrial wastes into super-oxidizing materials. The waste of interest is the iron sulfate heptahydrate (FeSO4·7H2O) mainly generated through the sulfate route used for titanium dioxide industrial production. The products of this transformation process are alkali ferrates (A2FeO4, A = Na, K) containing iron in its hexavalent state and considered as powerful oxidants characterized by properties useful for cleaning waters, wastewaters, and industrial effluents. The proposed process includes two steps: (i) The first step consisting of the pre-mixing of two solids (AOH with FeSO4·xH2O) in a rotary reactor allowing the coating of iron sulfate in the alkali hydroxides through solid–solid reactions; and (ii) the second step involves the synthesis of alkali ferrates in a fluidized bed by oxidation of the single solid obtained in the first step in diluted chlorine. The chemical synthesis of alkali ferrates can be carried out within a timeframe of a few minutes. The usage of a fluidized bed enhanced the energy and mass transfer allowing a quasi-complete control of the ferrate synthesis process. The alkali ferrate synthesis process described here possesses many characteristics aligned with the principles of the “green chemistry”.

In order to extend the preservation time of the ferrate, the experiment was carried out to study the type of strong oxidizer and buffering agent through static comparing test. The orthogonal test determined the best parameters of sulfate type, temperature and the dosage. The result shows that the inhibitory action of Na2S2O8 is the strongest oxidizer, and the temperature had the important role on ferrate stability. The higher temperature, the quicker the ferrate decomposition speed. The Na2S2O8 effect on stability was the best at any temperature and the dosage of Na2S2O8 could be controlled between 0.5% and 1.0%.The carbonate buffering agent could play certain stable effect, the ferrate decomposition is only 7.65% from the 2nd day to the 10th day when the mole ratio of NaHCO3 and NaOH was 2:1 and the density was the ferrate’s 100times.

L’article aborda l’ús del cinema com a eina pedagògica a l’ensenyament, a l’ESO i al batxillerat. S’hi recorden les possibilitats didàctiques que aquest llenguatge artístic té, tot considerant com s’ha fet servir, des del plantejament del cinema com a font de documentació sobre èpoques de la història, períodes i autors, fins a la seva aplicació més pràctica: fer una pel·lícula. En aquest sentit, més creatiu, s’exposa una pràctica portada a terme a 4t d’ESO, a l’Institut Gabriel Ferrater de Reus, durant el curs 2007-2008, al voltant de la figura de l’escriptor reusenc. Els alumnes varen desenvolupar tot un seguit d’activitats amb la finalitat de realitzar un treball de creació d’imatges sobre el personatge i la seva obra. Un d’aquests va ser un curtmetratge que dóna una visió sensible i molt interessant de l’escriptor, des del punt de vista de quatre alumnes.

Although the European Alps now have more than 1000 via ferratas, limited data exist on the actual incidence of fatal events in via ferratas and their causes. This retrospective study analysed data from a registry maintained by the Austrian Alpine Safety Board (n = 161,855, per 11 September 2019). Over a 10-year period from 1 November 2008 to 31 October 2018, all persons involved in a via ferrata-related emergency were included (n = 1684), of which 64% were male. Most emergencies were caused by blockage due to exhaustion and/or misjudgement of the climber’s own abilities. Consequently, more than half of all victims were evacuated uninjured. Only 62 (3.7%) via ferrata-related deaths occurred. Falling while climbing unsecured was the most common cause of death, and males had a 2.5-fold higher risk of dying in a via ferrata accident. The mortality rate was highest in technically easy-to-climb sections (Grade A, 13.2%/B, 4.9%), whereas the need to be rescued uninjured was highest in difficult routes (Grade D, 59.9%/E, 62.7%). Although accidents in via ferratas are common and require significant rescue resources, fatal accidents are rare. The correct use of appropriate equipment in technically easy-to-climb routes can prevent the majority of these fatalities.

Partindo da constatação de que os princípios e os métodos para construção e gestão dos sistemas documentários são dispersos e carecem de sistematização, este artigo levanta a hipótese de que a noção de estrutura, ao pressupor relações mútuas entre os seus elementos, confere maior organicidade aos sistemas e garante maior qualidade e consistência na recuperação da informação frente às questões dos usuários. Desse modo, objetiva explorar fundamentos, a partir da noção de estrutura, dos registros de informação e dos sistemas documentários. Para tanto, são apresentados conceitos básicos e questões relativas aos sistemas documentários e aos registros de informação. Posteriormente, elenca aportes teóricos sobre a noção de estrutura, tratados por Benveniste, Ferrater Mora, Hjelmslev, Lévi-Strauss, Lopes, Peñalver Simó, Saussure, além de Ducrot, Fávero e Koch, para então tratar das apropriações já realizadas pela Documentação por Paul Otlet, García Gutiérrez e Moreiro González. Conclui-se que a noção de estrutura adotada para tornar explícita uma hipótese de sistematização do real, a partir de um modelo, assegura maior organicidade aos sistemas, bem como confere referência pedagógica ao fazer documentário.

Una paradoja es una contradicción, que según Ferrater Mora en su Diccionario de Filosofía Abreviado, debía interpretarse etimológicamente como contrario a la opinión recibida y común. Para el caso del tema tratado en este trabajo seria la opinión difundida por las autoridades responsables de la política económica en el Perú, pero que en los hechos resulta contraria o paradójica a lo que se afirma. En el Diccionario Filosófico de Rosental y Iudin se agrega que una paradoja plantea el problema de hallar la fuente de tal contrariedad y los procedimientos para eliminarla. Por consiguiente, el trabajo de investigación titulado “La Paradoja: Crecimiento y Desarrollo Económico en el Perú”, implica conocer en primer lugar cuales son las causas de esta contradicción económica, para luego en un segundo momento proponer medidas económicas que tiendan a resolverla. Las causas que dan lugar a la paradoja económica en el Perú son varias, abarca aspectos económicos, sociales, políticos, tecnológicos, filosóficos, epistemológicos, ideológicos, etc., que por cierto no serán abordadas en su totalidad en este trabajo, pero que si serán asumidas cuando la ocasión lo exija.

The crystal structures of the compounds were determined by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction: In the (3+1)D modulated structure of K7.15[FeS2]4 (space group Ccce(00σ3)0s0, a = 1363.87(5), b = 2487.23(13), c = 583.47(3) pm, q = 0,0,0.444, R1 = 0.055/0.148, x = 0.787), a position modulation of the two crystallographically different undulated ${}_{\infty }{}^{1}\left[{\text{FeS}}_{4/2}\right]$ tetrahedra chains and the surrounding K cations is associated with an occupation modulation of one of the three potassium sites. In the case of the new monoclinic rubidium ferrate Rb4[FeS2]3 (x = $\frac{1}{3}$; space group P21/c, a = 1640.49(12), b = 1191.94(9), c = 743.33(6) pm, β = 94.759(4)°, Z = 4, R1 = 0.1184) the undulation of the tetrahedra chain is commensurate, the repetition unit consists of six tetrahedra. In the second new Rb ferrate, Rb7[FeS2]5 (x = 0.4; monoclinic, space group C2/c, K7[FeS2]5-type; a = 2833.9(2), b = 1197.36(9), c = 744.63(6) pm, β = 103.233(4)°, Z = 4, R1 = 0.1474) and its isotypic mixed Rb/Cs-analog Rb3.6Cs3.4[FeS2]5 (a = 2843.57(5), b = 1226.47(2), c = 759.890(10) pm, β = 103.7170(9)°, R1 = 0.0376) the chain buckling leads to a further increased repetition unit of 10 tetrahedra. For all mixed-valent ferrates, the Fe–S bond lengths continuously increase with the amount (x) of Fe(II). The buckling of the chains is controlled through the local coordination of the S atoms by the variable number of A cations of different sizes.

Los datos se analizaron mediante contenido temático de Bardin; el respaldo teórico estuvo constituido por el Manual de Cirugía Segura-Organización Mundial de la Salud, la Norma Técnica del Ministerio de Salud, Ferrater J, Cuartango R y Rojas S. y J. Watson con su teoría del Cuidado Transpersonal y sus factores de cuidado. Se obtuvieron tres grandes categorías: (1) La experiencia de implementar la Lista de Verificación: Cirugía Segura (LVCS), beneficios y dificultades; (2) LVCS, una responsabilidad compartida y (3) El costo de la omisión de la Lista de Verificación: Cirugía Segura, cada una con sus dos subcategorías; arribando a la consideración principal que existen limitaciones para la correcta aplicación de la LVCS, como: falta de concientización, apoyo en la capacitación, responsabilidad e interés; omisión de la firma, rutina. In recent years, considerable attention has been paid to various applications of Fe(VI) due to its unique properties such as oxidizing power, selective reactivity, stability of the salt, and non-toxic decomposition by-products of ferric ion. In environmental remediation processes, Fe(VI) has been proposed as green oxidant, coagulant, disinfectant, and antifoulant. Therefore, it is considered as a promising multi-purpose water treatment chemical. Fe(VI) has also potential applications in electrochemical energy source, as 'green cathode'. The effectiveness of ferrate as a powerful oxidant in the entire pH range, and its use in environmental applications for the removal of wide range of contaminants has been well documented by several researchers. There is scientific evidence that ferrate can effectively remove arsenic, algae, viruses, pharmaceutical waste, and other toxic heavy metals. Although Fe(VI) was first discovered in early eighteen century, detailed studies on physical and chemical properties of Fe(VI) had to wait until efficient synthetic and analytical methods of Fe(VI) were developed by Schreyer et al. in the 1950s. Actually, there have been developed three ways for the preparation of Fe(VI) compounds : the wet oxidation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) compounds, the dry oxidation of the same, and the electrochemistry method, mainly based on the trans passive oxidation of iron. High purity ferrates Fe(VI) can be generated when electrode of the pure iron metal or its alloys are anodized in concentrated alkaline solution. It is known that the efficiency of electrochemical process of Fe(VI) production depends on many factors such as current density, composition of anode material, types of electrolyte etc. In this paper, the electrochemical synthesis of ferrate(VI) solution by the anodic dissolution of iron and its alloys in concentrated water solution of NaOH and KOH is investigated. The process of transpassive dissolution of iron to ferrate(VI) was studied by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic and potentiostatic pulse method. Cyclic voltammetry gave useful data on potential regions where ferrate(VI) formation is to be expected in the course of transpassive anodic oxidation of iron and some of its alloys, and its stability in the electrolytes of different composition. In addition, step-wise oxidation of iron in anodic oxidation is confirmed. Galvanostatic pulse experiments confirmed the character of successive anodic oxidation of iron, as the three-step process of ferrate(VI) formation is clearly observed. In the cathodic pulse complex reduction of ferrate (VI), firstly to Fe(III) species and then to mixed Fe(II) and Fe(III) compounds and finally to elementary iron is confirmed. The significant difference between the mechanisms of anodic oxidation of pure iron and low carbon steel at the one side and electrical ferrous-silicon steel at the other is observed. The influence of material chemical composition on the electrochemical behavior of electrode in course of anodic polarization in strong alkaline solutions is discussed in terms of composition of passivating layer formed on the electrode. On the base of the experimental data, efficient synthesis of ferrate(VI) can be expected in the region of anodic potentials between + 0,55 and + 0,75 V against Hg|HgO reference electrode in the same solution, depending on the anode materials composition, in the alkaline electrolytes concentration between 10 and 15 M.

This investigation was carried out in order to synthesize ferrate (FeO42-) and was applied to the degradation of the food coloring agent of tartrazine. The synthesis of ferrate is carried out by the reaction of Fe(NO3)3 and NaOCl as oxidants in alkaline conditions. The synthesis was monitored using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer and resulted in a wavelength of 510 nm. The resulting ferrate is crystallized using KCl. The resulting crystals are potassium ferrate of 0.977 g. The angle of potassium ferrate 2q is measured with X-ray diffraction (XRD), which produces an angle of 2q of 28,480. Potassium ferrate was applied to degrade the tartrazine dye that was controlled using the UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The effect of several parameters on the tartrazine dye that degrades the reaction, such as the pH and the molar ratio of ferrate and tartrazine, was also studied in this study. The results showed that ferrate can degrade tartrazine at pH 9.6 with the highest degradation present in the molar ratio of ferrate and tartrazine 1: 5 which is 98.45%. This suggests that ferrate are an alternative and environmentally friendly substance that can be used to degrade tartrazine dye.

This paper presents a comparative study of the performance of ferrate (VI) towards wastewater treatment. The effects of solution pH, reaction temperature and amount of ferrate on the eosin removal rate were investigated. Results demonstrated that increasing the amount of ferrate (VI) and low acidity leads to good removal performance of ferrate towards eosin. So ferrate (VI) is an effective reagent for dyes treatment. The reaction temperature, however, has little influence on the removal rate which may be due to the degradation effects of ferrate at elevated temperatures.

Samples were analyzed for COD and ammonia-nitrogen removal. Results demonstrated that low addition of ferrate (VI) leads to good removal of COD and ammonia nitrogen. Abstract Harmful algal blooms (HAB) release microtoxins that contaminate drinking water supplies and risk the health of millions annually. Crystalline ferrate(VI) is a powerful oxidant capable of removing algal microtoxins. We investigate in-situ electrochemically produced ferrate from common carbon steel as an on-demand alternative to crystalline ferrate for the removal of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and compare the removal efficacy for both electrochemical (EC) and chemical dosing methodologies. We report that a very low dose of EC-ferrate in deionized water (0.5 mg FeO42− L−1) oxidizes MC-LR (MC-LR0 = 10 μg L−1) to below the guideline limit (1.0 μg L−1) within 10 minutes' contact time. With bicarbonate or natural organic matter (NOM), doses of 2.0–5.0 mg FeO42− L−1 are required, with lower efficacy of EC-ferrate than crystalline ferrate due to loss of EC-ferrate by water oxidation. To evaluate the EC-ferrate process to concurrently oxidize micropollutants, coagulate NOM, and disinfect drinking water, we spiked NOM-containing real water with MC-LR and Escherichia coli, finding that EC-ferrate is effective at 10.0 mg FeO42− L−1 under normal operation or 2.0 mg FeO42− L−1 if the test water has initial pH optimized. We suggest in-situ EC-ferrate may be appropriate for sporadic HAB events in small water systems as a primary or back-up technology.

The rate of reactions of these compounds with ferrate (VI) usually decrease with increase in pH in alkaline media. The reactions of ferrate (VI) with compounds may be characterized most commonly by (i) a 1 e-transfer step from Fe (VI) to Fe (V), followed by a 2 e-transfer to Fe (III) as the reduced product (FeVIFeVFeIII), and (ii) 2 e-transfer steps (FeVIFeIVFeII). Oxygen-atom transfer to the compounds may occur through involvement of either ferrate (VI) in the oxidations carried out by ferrate (VI). Oxidation of biological species by ferrate (VI) is also briefly presented.

In order to research the removal effect of potassium ferrate to COD in the different wasterwater, the papermaking wastewater and the tanning wastewater were used as research objects. This paper was focused on evaluating the effectiveness of potassium ferrate preoxidation on COD removal by coagulation in different wastewater of papermaking and tanning. Potassium ferrate is a strong oxidant in the entire pH range: its redox potentials are 2.20 and 0.72 V in acidic and basic media, respectively ferrate (VI) ions will be reduced to Fe (III) ions or ferric hydroxide during the oxidation process, potassium ferrate has also the ability to act as coagulant. The removal efficiency was 78.21% to the papermaking wastewater and 85.51% to the tanning wastewater, respectively, when the dosage concentration of potassium ferrate was 20 mg/L. Altogether, potassium ferrate is a perfect sewage treatment agent to papermaking wastewater and tanning wastewater.

Ferrate is a powerful oxidant and disinfectant that has been proposed for use in drinking water treatment for more than a decade. The main obstacles in the application are costs and stability. In water treatment, using wet oxidation method to prepare liquid ferrate can save production costs. Saturated ferric nitrate solution can get higher efficiency and productivity to generate ferrate. Water quality has no obvious effect on the productivity of ferrate. The optimum alkaline concentration is 10-13 mol/L. The reaction time and temperature affect the quality of liquid ferrate product. The larger the mole ratio of sodium hypochlorite to ferric nitrate is, the greater the productivity of ferrate is. The proportion of sodium hypochlorite to ferric nitrate should be adjusted appropriately.

Abstract Heavy metal contamination of water resources is a critical issue which adversely affects humans. Ferrate(VI) (FeVIO42−, Fe(VI)), as a new type of green multifunctional water treatment agent, has shown promising potential for environmental decontamination. A complete understanding of the interactions between ferrate(VI) and toxic metals can be conducive to the further development of ferrate(VI) technology for application to wastewater treatment. This review first introduces the purification of ferrate(VI) technology for toxic metals including free heavy metals and metal complexes briefly. The effective parameters are then analyzed and discussed in detail. Subsequently, the reactivity and mechanisms of ferrate(VI) with toxic metals are emphatically described. Finally, possible research challenges and directions for ferrate(VI) technology applied to wastewater treatment in the future are summarized.

This study examined the individual and combined effects of potassium ferrate(VI) additions and freeze-thaw conditioning for the treatment and dewatering of wastewater sludge in cold climates, with particular focus on the inactivation of fecal coliforms and oxidation of estrogens, androgens, and progestogens. The first phase of the study evaluated the effects of potassium ferrate(VI) pre-treatment followed by freeze-thaw at −20 °C using a low (0.5 g/L) and high (5.0 g/L) dose of potassium ferrate(VI). The results showed that pre-treatment of anaerobically digested sludge with 5 g/L of potassium ferrate(VI) reduced the concentration of fecal coliforms in the sludge cake to below 100 MPN/g DS. The second phase evaluated the ability of ferrate(VI) to oxidise selected hormones in sludge. Anaerobically digested sludge samples were spiked with 10 different hormones: estrone (E1), 17α-estradiol, 17β-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), equilin, mestranol, testosterone, norethindrone and norgestrel in two groups of low (3–75 ng/mL) and high (12–300 ng/L) concentration ranges of hormones. The samples were treated with either 0.5 or 1.0 g/L of potassium ferrate(VI), and hormone concentrations were measured again after treatment. Potassium ferrate(VI) additions as low as 1.0 g/L reduced the concentration of estrogens in sludge. Potassium ferrate(VI) additions of 0.5 and 1.0 g/L were less effective at reducing the concentrations of androgens and progestogens. Increasing ferrate(VI) dose would likely result in more substantial decreases in the concentrations of fecal coliforms and hormones. The results of this study indicate that the combined use of freeze-thaw and ferrate(VI) has the potential to provide a complete sludge treatment solution in cold regions.

This paper reviews the use of ferrate (VI) for water and wastewater treatment. The literature revealed that due to its unique properties (viz. strong oxidizing potential and simultaneous generation of ferric coagulating species), ferrate (VI) salt can disinfect microorganisms, partially degrade and/or oxidise the organic and inorganic impurities, and remove suspended/colloidal particulate materials in a single dosing and mixing unit process. However, challenges have existed for the implementation of ferrate (VI) technology in practice due to the instability of a ferrate solution or high production cost of solid ferrate products. Fundamental study is thus required to explore the new preparation methods focusing on increasing the production yield and products stability and avoiding using hypochlorite or chlorine as the oxidant. Also, the application of ferrate (VI) in drinking water treatment has not been studied systematically and future work in this field is recommended.

Sulfa antibiotics are a family of typical broad-spectrum antibiotics, which have become one of the most frequently detected antibiotics in water, posing a great threat to human health and ecosystem. Potassium ferrate is a new type of high-efficiency multifunctional water treatment agent, collecting the effects of oxidation, adsorption, flocculation, coagulation, sterilization, and deodorization. Performance and mechanism of degradation of typical broad-spectrum antibiotics by Fe(VI)-US were further studied, investigating the degradation effect of sulfa antibiotics by single ultrasound, single potassium ferrate, and potassium ferrate-ultrasound (Fe(VI)-US). It was found that Fe(VI)-US technology had a significant role in promoting the degradation of sulfa antibiotics via orthogonal experiments. Factors evaluated included sulfa antibiotics type, pH value, potassium ferrate dosage, ultrasonic frequency, and ultrasonic power, with the pH value and potassium ferrate dosage being affected most significantly. One reason for synergy facilitating the degradation is the common oxidation of potassium ferrate and ultrasound, and the other is that Fe(III) produced promotes the degradation rate. According to the product analysis and degradation pathways of three sulfa antibiotics, ferrate-sonication sulfa antibiotics are removed by hydroxyl radical oxidation.
