Abstract (sommario):
The use of a finite mixture of normal distributions in model-based clustering allows to capture non-Gaussian data clusters. However, identifying the clusters from the normal components is challenging and in general either achieved by imposing constraints on the model or by using post-processing procedures. Within the Bayesian framework we propose a different approach based on sparse finite mixtures to achieve identifiability. We specify a hierarchical prior where the hyperparameters are carefully selected such that they are reflective of the cluster structure aimed at. In addition, this

In the framework of Bayesian model-based clustering based on a finite mixture of Gaussian distributions, we present a joint approach to estimate the number of mixture components and identify cluster-relevant variables simultaneously as well as to obtain an identified model. Our approach consists in specifying sparse hierarchical priors on the mixture weights and component means. In a deliberately overfitting mixture model the sparse prior on the weights empties superfluous components during MCMC. There are many variables that affect the viscoelastic properties of asphalt mixtures with time, among which age hardening may be considered one of the important ones. Age hardening of asphalt mixtures is an irreversible process, which contributes to a reduction of the durability of pavements and eventually increases the maintenance cost. Beside the environmental effects, ageing in asphalt mixture depends on the physicochemical properties of bitumen and mixture morphology which is a combined effect of aggregate packing, porosity, air void distribution and their interconnectivity. Thus, a clear

Using Gaussian mixtures is a popular and very flexible approach to statistical modelling. The standard approach of maximum likelihood estimation cannot be used for some of these models. The estimates are, however, obtainable by iterative solutions, such as the EM (Expectation-Maximization) algorithm. The aim of this thesis is to present Gaussian mixture models and their implementation in R. The non-trivial case of having to use the EM algorithm is assumed. Existing methods and packages are presented, investigated and compared. Some of them are extended by custom R code. Several exhaustive simu

In this paper, we provide a parsimonious means of estimating panel VARs with stochastic volatility. We assume that coefficients associated with domestic lagged endogenous variables arise from a finite mixture of Gaussian distribution. Shrinkage on the cluster size is introduced through suitable priors on the component weights and cluster-relevant quantities are identified through novel normal-gamma shrinkage priors. To assess whether dynamic interdependencies between units are needed, we moreover impose shrinkage priors on the coefficients related to other countries' endogenous variables. Fi

We give an upper bound for the norm distance of (0,1) -valued Markov-exchangeable random variables to mixtures of distributions of Markov processes. A Markov-exchangeable random variable has a distribution that depends only on the starting value and the number of transitions 0-0, 0-1, 1-0 and 1-1. We show that if, for increasing length of variables, the norm distance to mixtures of Markov processes goes to 0, the rate of this convergence may be arbitrarily slow. Linear mixed-effects (LME) models are frequently used for modeling longitudinal data. One complicating factor in the analysis of such data is that samples are sometimes obtained from a population with significant underlying heterogeneity, which would be hard to capture by a single LME model. Such problems may be addressed by a finite mixture of linear mixed-effects (FMLME) models, which segments the population into subpopulations and models each subpopulation by a distinct LME model. Often in the initial stage of a study, a large number of predictors are introduced. However, their associations

Abstract (sommario):
The complexity of many failure mechanisms and variations in component manufacture often make standard probability distributions inadequate for reliability modeling. Finite mixture distributions provide the necessary flexibility for modeling such complex phenomena but add considerable difficulty to the inference. This difficulty is overcome by drawing an analogy to neural networks. With appropropriate modifications, a neural network can represent a finite mixture CDF or PDF exactly. Training with Bayesian Regularization gives an efficient empirical Bayesian inference of the failure time dis

Abstract (sommario):
A data modeling procedure called Mixture model, is introduced beneficial to the characteristics of our data. Mixture models have been proved flexible and easy to use, a situation which can be confirmed from the majority of papers and books which have been published the last twenty years. The models are estimated using a Bayesian inference through an efficient Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm, known as Gibbs Sampling. The focus of the paper is on models for network-telecommunication lab data (not time dependent data) and on the valid predictions we can accomplish. We categorize our var

Abstract (sommario):
We present limit theory for tests of homogeneity for finite mixture models. More specifically, we derive the asymptotic distribution of certain random quantities used for testing that a mixture of two distributions is in fact just a single distribution. Our methods apply to cases where the mixture component distributions come from one of a wide class of one-parameter exponential families, both continous and discrete. We consider two random quantities, one related to testing simple hypotheses, the other composite hypotheses. For simple hypotheses we consider the maximum of the standard

Abstract (sommario):
Finite mixture distributions are receiving more and more attention from statisticians in many different fields of research because they are a very flexible class of models. They are typically used for density estimation or to model population heterogeneity. One can think of a finite mixture distribution as grouping the observations into components from which they are assumed to have arisen. In certain settings these groups have a physical interpretation. The interest in these distributions has been boosted recently because of the ever increasing computer power available to researchers to carry
