Abstract (sommario):
This paper describes a Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) pre-emphasis technique which utilizes time-domain information processing to increase the data rate for a given bandwidth of interconnection. The PWM pre-emphasis method does not change the pulse amplitude as for conventional FIR pre-emphasis, but instead exploits timing resolution. This fits well with recent CMOS technology trends toward higher switching speeds and lower voltage headroom. We discuss multiple-valued data transmission based on time-domain pre-emphasis techniques in consideration of higher-order channel effects.

Abstract (sommario):
The areas where silver fir occurs in Switzerland are divided into main, minor or relict areas. In the main areas a wide distribution of silver fir is to be reckoned with. In contrast to traditional systems the emphasis of silver fir distribution lies somewhat lower and more clearly in pre-alpine regions. In the minor areas silver fir has withdrawn to shadowy slopes and is limited to low-lying valleys between the alps. In main valleys where the altitude of the valley bottom is higher than 1000 m.a.s.l. the current presence of silver fir is considered to be a relict of a postglacial warm period, favourable to silver fir, and not the result of human destruction.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Wind noise can be a nuisance or a debilitating masker for cochlear implant users in outdoor environments. Previous studies indicated that wind noise at the microphone/hearing aid output had high levels of low-frequency energy and the amount of noise generated is related to the microphone directionality. Currently, cochlear implants only offer either directional microphones or omnidirectional microphones for users at-large. As all cochlear implants utilize pre-emphasis filters to reduce low-frequency energy before the signal is encoded, effective wind noise reduction algorithms for hearing aids might not be applicable for cochlear implants. Purpose: The purposes of this study were to investigate the effect of microphone directionality on speech recognition and perceived sound quality of cochlear implant users in wind noise and to derive effective wind noise reduction strategies for cochlear implants. Research Design: A repeated-measure design was used to examine the effects of spectral and temporal masking created by wind noise recorded through directional and omnidirectional microphones and the effects of pre-emphasis filters on cochlear implant performance. A digital hearing aid was programmed to have linear amplification and relatively flat in-situ frequency responses for the directional and omnidirectional modes. The hearing aid output was then recorded from 0 to 360° at flow velocities of 4.5 and 13.5 m/sec in a quiet wind tunnel. Study Sample: Sixteen postlingually deafened adult cochlear implant listeners who reported to be able to communicate on the phone with friends and family without text messages participated in the study. Intervention: Cochlear implant users listened to speech in wind noise recorded at locations that the directional and omnidirectional microphones yielded the lowest noise levels. Data Collection and Analysis: Cochlear implant listeners repeated the sentences and rated the sound quality of the testing materials. Spectral and temporal characteristics of flow noise, as well as speech and/or noise characteristics before and after the pre-emphasis filter, were analyzed. Correlation coefficients between speech recognition scores and crest factors of wind noise before and after pre-emphasis filtering were also calculated. Results: Listeners obtained higher scores using the omnidirectional than the directional microphone mode at 13.5 m/sec, but they obtained similar speech recognition scores for the two microphone modes at 4.5 m/sec. Higher correlation coefficients were obtained between speech recognition scores and crest factors of wind noise after pre-emphasis filtering rather than before filtering. Conclusion: Cochlear implant users would benefit from both directional and omnidirectional microphones to reduce far-field background noise and near-field wind noise. Automatic microphone switching algorithms can be more effective if the incoming signal were analyzed after pre-emphasis filters for microphone switching decisions.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper presents a reflection of the theory of eve-ryday life with an emphasis on the problems of not only the space of everyday life, but also the methods of studying it, as a «case» the analysis of the com-ponents of the daily life of a modern city dweller is proposed, revealing the peculiarity of the modern sociocultural space through the perception of social problems represented in the fields of social advertis-ing: ecology, social responsibility, healthy lifestyles and deviations in various spheres of social space (from corruption to domestic violence). The pre-sented results of the authors’ research represent explicit and «invisible» components of the daily life of the inhabitants of a modern city. The factors that determine the formation of the space of everyday life of the city dwellers are highlighted. Markers, signs of everyday life, to which the city dwellers today demonstrate heightened sensitivity and latent reflec-tions that remain outside the field of perception, are noted.

Abstract (sommario):
Career development objectives, as codified in the American School Counselor Association's National Standards, can be overshadowed by the growing emphasis on academic standards, testing, and accountability so thematic of national educational and public policy initiatives. The career fair vehicle, which proactively employs the wisdom of social cognitive learning and self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1995), may be well suited to this challenge. In this study, 139 predominantly high school-aged adolescents attending a career fair were exposed to a variety of mostly female professionals discussing and demonstrating their professions. Pre- and post-test analysis of occupational self-efficacy, or confidence in performing the duties associated with a range of occupations, revealed that this variable was strongly influenced in the short term. The authors discuss these results in the context of self-efficacy theory as well as implications for school counselors engaged in career development.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper evaluates the performance of two competing currency models as a forecasting and trading tool in fund management. A dynamic vector error correction model is utilized to construct a currency forecasting and fair value forecasting model for the Euro-Dollar exchange rate. Emphasis is placed on robustness testing model performance by changing its specification and how both models perform across different time periods. Based on the accuracy of the forecasts the fair value model outperforms the currency forecasting model; a finding that is not supported using directional forecasts. This is robust to changes in model specification and across different time spans that cover pre-and current financial crisis periods. It is also discovered that the evaluation criteria used and prevailing market conditions determines whether model performance translates into value added in a currency fund.

Goosen, Marius Eugene. "Reducing jitter utilising adaptive pre-emphasis FIR filter for high speed serial links". Diss., University of Pretoria, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/28712.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Jitter requirements have become more stringent with higher speed serial communication links. Reducing jitter, with the main focus on reducing data dependant jitter (DDJ), is presented by employing adaptive finite impulse response (FIR) filter pre-emphasis. The adaptive FIR pre-emphasis is implemented in the IBM 7WL 0.18 µm SiGe BiCMOS process. SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) provide high bandwidth, low noise devices which could reduce the total system jitter. The trade-offs between utilising metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) current mode logic (CML) and SiGe bipolar CML are also discussed in comparison with a very high fT (IBM 8HP process with fT = 200 GHz) process. A reduction in total system jitter can be achieved by keeping the sub-components of the system jitter constant while optimising the DDJ. High speed CML circuits have been employed to allow data rates in excess of 5 Gb/s to be transmitted whilst still maintaining an internal voltage swing of at least 300 mV. This allows the final FIR filter adaptation scheme to minimise the DDJ within 12.5 % of a unit interval, at a data rate of 5 Gb/s implementing 6 FIR pre-emphasis filter taps, for a worst case copper backplane channel (30" FR-4 channel). The implemented integrated circuit (IC) designed as part of the verification process takes up less than 1 mm2 of silicon real estate. In this dissertation, SPICE simulation results are presented, as well as the novel IC implementation of the proposed FIR filter adaptation technique as part of the hypothesis verification procedure. The implemented transmitter and receiver were tested for functionality, and showed the successful functional behaviour of all the implemented CML gates associated with the first filter tap. However, due to the slow charge and discharge rate of the pulse generation circuit in both the transmitter and receiver, only the main operational state of the transmitter could be experimentally validated. As a result of the adaptation scheme implemented, the contribution in this research lies in that a designer utilising such an IC can optimise the DDJ, reducing the total system jitter, and hence increasing the data fidelity with minimal effort.

Abstract (sommario):
The inception of the low-cost carrier (LCC) into the UK in the early 1990s revolutionised passenger aviation. The now saturated short-haul market finds airlines increasingly manipulative of their business model, seeking to further differentiate their product offering from their rivals. With an abundance of airlines to choose from, the consumer is faced with what at times can be a complex decision-making process as to which airline to fly with. This research seeks through empirical research to identify key characteristics and attitudes of airline passengers (with particular emphasis upon LCCs) and the implications for pre-trip decision-making and airline choice. The study begins with an overview of the airline business models that dominate the UK passenger aviation sector, before introducing Birmingham Airport (BHX) as a case study airport on which part of the main findings of this research are based. A detailed literature review then seeks to offer insight to attitude formation and the decision-making process that facilitates behaviour, before examining the implications for airline choice. The fieldwork was undertaken in two stages with passenger decision-making explored through structured-interviews conducted with passengers in the airside departure lounges at BHX (n = 490). In addition, the attitudes of airline passengers were explored using an online attitudinal survey, distributed internationally to a self-selected sample (n = 307). The quantitative analysis of both strands of research suggests key differences exist in the decision-making processes and research methods employed by passengers’ of airlines operating different business models, but particularly for passengers of LCCs. Both socio-demographic and situational factors are identified as influential in decision-making and choice processes. Attitudes, based upon actual experience and social representation are also considered significant. The findings present a classification of airline passengers based upon the primary research and suggest further quantitative research should explore decision-making over time and in different situational contexts.

Abstract (sommario):
Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy-specific condition diagnosed by new-onset hypertension and proteinuria after 20 weeks’ gestation. The incidence of pre-eclampsia means that it is both the most prevalent cause of acute kidney injury (AKI) in pregnancy and the commonest glomerular disease in the world. This chapter outlines the diagnosis and management of pre-eclampsia. Particular emphasis is given to the post-partum disease course as this is when a specialist nephrology opinion may be sought. HELLP (haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets) syndrome is a variant of severe pre-eclampsia. The most important differential diagnoses of HELLP syndrome are the thrombotic microangiopathies. Pregnancy can act as a trigger for both for new disease and flare of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and haemolytic uraemic syndrome. AKI is a common complication of acute fatty liver of pregnancy. The diagnosis and supportive management of this condition are considered.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter assesses the judicial efficiency of the ICC’s confirmation of charges proceedings. It reviews existing jurisprudence and addresses aspects of the adversarial nature of the proceedings, including disclosure and other procedural issues. It examines the impact of current practice on pre-trial preparation, the conduct of trials, and the overall duration of ICC proceedings. Particular emphasis is placed on the relationship between pre-trial and trial proceedings, including analysis of the post-confirmation modification of legal characterizations (Regulation 55 of the Regulations of the Court) and its importance for the design of the confirmation phase. The chapter concludes that future confirmation hearings and amendments should focus on judicial efficiency and the limited purpose of the hearing, which is submitting charges on trial or denying a confirmation on the basis of a considerably low legal threshold.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This chapter examines the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) between states and non-state actors and its implications for international law governing the use of force. It considers whether WMD proliferation and changes in security realities have brought a crisis in international law on the use of force and discusses the use of pre-emptive force for preventing states and non-state actors ‘of concern’ from developing and using WMD. It analyses the shift in the policy positions of the US and other relatively powerful states, from more multilateral and diplomacy-based ‘non-proliferation’ to increased emphasis on proactive and often unilateral or small-coalition-based ‘counterproliferation’. It looks at concerns that several states will be emboldened to apply the doctrine of counterproliferation-oriented pre-emption to their regional conflicts. Finally, it evaluates proposals to reform the provisions and procedures of the UN Charter system for regulating the use of force, including the law on self-defence.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter examines the nature of Native American societies immediately prior to the advent of sustained contacts with Europeans in the late fifteenth century. Touching on the broad issues of social organization, politics, trade, religion, and identity, the chapter provides a general framework for understanding the uniqueness of indigenous Native American cultures. The precontact Native cultures of North America were far more diverse and complex than any of the theories archaeologists have previously devised to understand them. In addition to the knowledge gained from ever new archaeological investigations of precontact sites in North America, there is ample evidence that an emphasis on scholarly engagement with descendant communities holds the potential to reveal even more about pre- and postcontact Native American experiences.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter examines the legal mechanisms for mitigating the effect of restrictive licensing provisions used by right holders to regulate the use of functional elements of software, focusing on both negotiable and non-negotiable licences. In particular, it considers the extent to which existing judicial and statutory tools are effective in regulating restrictive licensing provisions in the software industry. The chapter first discusses contract law-based mechanisms, giving emphasis to the implications of whether a transaction is classified as a sale or a licence for the publishers’ ability to restrict third parties from reproducing or appropriating functional features in their software product. It then analyses pre-emption-based mechanisms, as well as competition law-based mechanisms, citing the EU competition law and the US antitrust law.

Abstract (sommario):
This commentary focuses on Article 2.1.15 of the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (PICC) concerning negotiations in bad faith. Art 2.1.15 establishes liability for pre-contractual conduct in general terms. It stipulates that a party is free to negotiate and is not liable for failure to reach an agreement. However, a party who negotiates or breaks off negotiations in bad faith is liable for the losses caused to the other party. In particular, it is bad faith for a party to enter into or continue negotiations when intending not to reach an agreement with the other party. This commentary also discusses the consequences of failure to observe the principle of good faith and fair dealing, with particular emphasis on damages and the right to request performance of the obligation to negotiate in good faith, along with exclusion or limitation of liability and burden of proof.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter uses a randomized community development programme in rural Pakistan to assess the impact of citizen engagement on public service delivery and maternal and child health outcomes. The programme had a strong emphasis on organizing women, who also identified health services as a development priority at baseline. At midline, we find that the mobilization effort alone had a significant impact on the performance of village-based health providers. We detect economically large improvements in pregnancy and well-baby visits by female health workers, as well as increased utilization of pre- and post-natal care by pregnant women. In contrast, the quality of supra-village health services did not improve, underscoring the importance of community enforcement and monitoring capacity for improving service delivery.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter explores the changes that have taken place in the role and functioning of the Internet in terrorism and counter-terrorism in the past decade. It traces the shift in focus from a preoccupation with the threat of so-called “cyberterrorism” in the period pre- and immediately post-9/11 to the contemporary emphasis on the role of the Internet in processes of violent radicalization. The cyberterrorism threat is explained as over-hyped herein, and the contemporary focus, by researchers and policymakers, on the potential of the Internet as a vehicle for violent radicalization viewed as more appropriate albeit not without its difficulties. This change in emphasis is at least partially predicated, it is argued, on the significant changes that occurred in the nature and functioning of the Internet in the last decade: the advent of Web 2.0, with its emphasis on social networking, user generated content, and digital video is treated as particularly salient in this regard. Description and analysis of both “negative” and “positive” Internet-based Counter Violent Extremism (CVE) and online counterterrorism measures and their evolutions are also supplied.

The present chapter explores the iambic role of Hermes both within and outside iambic poetry, with a focus on the Homeric Hymn to Hermes, which can be construed as the mythical pre-history of the iambic genre, and on the fragments of Hipponax, whose predilection for Hermes calls for an explanation. In both cases, Iambic Hermes emerges as a metamorphic trickster, promoting poetic and linguistic innovation with an unprecedented emphasis on the signifier. This suggests a strong continuity between iambic poetry and its “pre-history.”

Abstract (sommario):
In the English language teaching context in Nigeria, teacher training-institutions often use theoretical and outdated curriculum with little emphasis on the acquisition of communicative language teaching (CLT) skills or content mastery. This does not adequately prepare teachers for work in basic and secondary schools. This chapter focuses on the potential of using professional community of learning to train pre-service teachers of English in CLT approaches. Two groups of teachers with similar pre-service training were evaluated during teaching practice, with one group being exposed to CLT approaches. Results suggest that pre-service teachers that were exposed to CLT approaches performed better in class than those who were not. Following these results, the potential for replication and integration into the national teacher-training curriculum in Nigeria is explored.

Abstract (sommario):
Reuse of patient data from prehospital electronic health record (EHR) to EHRs in emergency rooms is currently non-existing. In Danish EHRs, access to patient data recorded in prehospital settings is either not available or accessible in a PDF file. The amount of patient and administrative data registered at the prehospital unit is high and includes a rich representation of the accident, the patient and treatment. By applying emphasis framing to the representation of data, information overload can be diminished. Several international studies have investigated the suboptimal reuse of data within this field. Hence, the aim of this pre-study was to develop webservices based on emphasis framing to increase interoperability between the prehospital health record and the emergency room’s EHR. In this study, requirements engineering and emphasis framing was applied. Iterative linear requirement specification process was chosen as a frame to address the aim. The five included phases were revisited due to the iterative nature of this study. Tools used in the requirement engineering process were semi structured interviews and direct observations. The pre-study resulted in 12 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) profiles using SNOMED CT terminology bindings. The profiles contained elements which represented primarily patient data recorded in the prehospital setting. The profiles were compared to a case representing the urgent continuity of care to validate their ability to standardize data from prehospital health records. Conclusively, FHIR profiles can be modelled to standardize prehospital urgent patient data to support the patient trajectory. With the applied emphasis framing, the clinical context and content have been maintained.

Abstract (sommario):
The prehistory of the modern pharmaceutical era is recounted, with emphasis upon the products, including the emergence of snake oil remedies, tapeworm diets and dangerous yet contemporary quack medicines such as Laetrile. As the magnitude of public outrage increased at the turn of the last century, the rise of yellow journalism highlighted spectacles that revealed further abuses and propelled high profile muckrakers to target adulterated products, including an emerging product known as Coca-Cola. As scientific understanding of infection grew, so did the potential for abuse, which culminated in a life-saving and revolutionary pre-antibiotic sulfa drug. However, the adulteratoin of this new breakthrough medicine resulted in the poisoning of more than 100 children in 1938. The disaster arose when a form of the drug was targeted at young by using a sweet elixir, which gained its taste by dissolving the medicine in radiator fluid. The resulting tragedy ushered in the era of the modern Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Abstract (sommario):
The introduction of a pre-communion examination in Wittenberg was the catalyst for the incorporation of a section on the Lord’s Supper into the earliest evangelical catechisms, which began to be produced in 1525. Throughout the second half of the 1520s, Luther’s sermons on communion preparation increasingly emphasized belief in Christ’s bodily presence, but this emphasis was not reflected in catechisms written outside of Wittenberg, which continued to teach positions from Luther’s pre-1525 writings. There were very few sacramentarian catechisms, with the most important being the Strasbourg catechism by Wolfgang Capito. The St. Gallen catechism modified the older catechism of the Bohemian Brethren, while the communion preparation advice produced in Augsburg emphasized positions both sides could accept.

Abstract (sommario):
This research is part of a long-term study focused on the redesign of pre-service early teacher education based on observations of schools that use a multicultural inclusive model. The Swedish school highlighted in this research provides a case study in how international standards are appraised by education stakeholders (researchers, educators, the local community, etc.) and then transformed into curricula in local practice. The key to this Swedish approach is the emphasis on democratic values in education. This gives the educators at the preschool in question a traditional “Swedish” basis for their progressive efforts to rise to the challenges presented by their multicultural student body, challenges they meet by creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all members of the school community, students, teachers, and parents alike. The goal is to make each person feel valued and included in the educational process. The emphasis is on inclusivity for all, whatever their background, religion or socio-economic status. The approach of the Ringmuren Forskolan is presented as a potential model for institutions that have the responsibility of preparing pre-service teachers for their work in an increasingly multicultural world.

Abstract (sommario):
The operating regime of a gas turbine combustor is highly sensitive to fuel composition changes. In particular, the addition of hydrogen, a major constituent of syngas, has a major effect on flame behavior due to the higher burning rates associated with hydrogen. A laboratory scale pre-mixed test rig is constructed in order to study such effects. The fuel composition is incremented with increasing hydrogen starting from 100% methane. It is observed that increased RMS pressure levels and higher susceptibility to flashback occurs with increasing hydrogen volume fraction. Furthermore, hydrogen enrichment can cause an abrupt change in the dominant acoustic mode. Phase locked hydroxyl PLIF measurements have been performed with respect to the dominant acoustic instability limit cycle. These measurements are complemented with real time heat release, emissions and flashback measurements. Particular emphasis is put on time resolving the thermoacoustic instability induced flashback cycle of the wedgeshaped flame front and the temporal events associated with flashback.

Abstract (sommario):
Architectural Education in the UK has drifted toward an esoteric preoccupation with style and artistic production and is ignoring important issues of society and urban change. Techniques of user participation and involvement of students in real life social problems is on the agenda in only a few schools of architecture. Yet in the real world more emphasis is being placed on tenants and resident participation in social housing programmes. The Community Technical Aid movement is going from strength to strength. However UK schools of architecture are not preparing students for work of this kind. In this paper it is argued that architectural history and theory is largely to blame for placing too much emphasis on precedent studies divorced from social and political context. Progressive movements in CIAM and radical social programmes are ignored in favour of pre-occupation with fashionable but content free stylisms.
