Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, we propose a very simple and efficient binary run-length compression technique for non-binary sources. The technique is based on mapping the non-binary information source into an equivalent binary source using a new fixed-length code instead of the ASCII code. The codes are chosen such that the probability of one of the two binary symbols; say zero, at the output of the mapper is made as small as possible. Moreover, the “all ones” code is excluded from the code assignments table to ensure the presence of at least one “zero” in each of the output codewords. Compression is achieve

AbstractIn this manuscript a simple method is presented for constructing run length limited error control codes from linear binary block codes. The run length limited properties are obtained via addition of a carefully chosen fixed binary vector - a modifier to all codewords without introducing any additional redundancy. Modifier selection is based on a specific property, which can be found in some of the linear binary block codes control matrices. Similar known methods are based on properties of generator matrices. However some codes are specified via control matrices, for example low density

This study deals with how to retrieve images using a rearranged chain-code based column vector. The chain-code expresses objects or boundaries of areas in straight chains with fixed direction and length, and encodes the final boundary, which is sensitive to rotated images. This study, therefore, works with chain-codes of eight directions in images and uses differences between values of chain-codes to obtain newly-rearranged chain-codes for image retrieval.

AbstractA 2-action with “maximal number of isolated fixed points” (i.e., with only isolated fixed points such that dimk(⊕iHi (M; k)) = |M2|, k = ) on a 3-dimensional, closed manifold determines a binary self-dual code of length = . In turn this code determines the cohomology algebra H*(M; k) and the equivariant cohomology . Hence, from results on binary self-dual codes one gets information about the cohomology type of 3-manifolds which admit involutions with maximal number of isolated fixed points. In particular, “most” cohomology types of closed 3-manifolds do not admit such involutions. Gene

However, the lengths and grammar of text fragments, which are closely related to ICD coding, vary a lot in different documents. Therefore, a flat and fixed-length convolutional architecture may not be capable of learning good document representations. In this paper, we proposed a M

A prefix code, a P-code, is a code where no codeword is a prefix of another codeword. In this paper, a symmetric cipher based on prefix codes is proposed. The simplicity of the design makes this cipher usable for Internet of Things applications. Our goal is to investigate the security of this cipher. A detailed analysis of the fundamental properties of P-codes shows that the keyspace of the cipher is too large to mount a brute-force attack. Specifically, in this regard we will find bounds on the number of minimal P-codes containing a binary word given in advance. Furthermore, the statistical a

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter considers the growth of a group. It begins with the case of a group with a given finite generating set, in which the ball B(1, r) of radius r centered at the identity 1 is the set of group elements whose word length is less than or equal to r. Given a group that is fixed and some r greater than or equal to 0, the chapter invokes Gromov's polynomial growth theorem to determine how many group elements are in B(1, r) and how many group elements are in S(1, r). It also explores the use of simple counting methods to compute several growth series before concluding with an overview of cone types, formal languages and context-free grammars, and the DSV method used to compute the growth of grammar productions. The discussion includes exercises and research projects.

Abstract (sommario):
Day care surgery is the standard of care for minor surgical procedures in developed countries and rapidly increasing in practice in developing countries. The main advantages of day care surgery are cost containment, early mobilization of the patient, less pain because of minimally invasive surgical techniques, early return of patient to their home and work. The downsides of day care surgery include the inability to treat all patients and perform all surgical procedures since surgical fitness for day care procedures is demanding, unforeseen readmission, the need for more operating rooms, and increasing expertise among health care workers. Considering day care surgery as systematic, scheduled and short duration stay in hospital, it is very important to select or sort out the cases which fit in the criteria according to all conventional definitions of triage. It is well organized within stipulated time frame and performed in fixed unit with proper assessment by anesthesia and nursing team in addition to core assessment of surgical team. Surgical option exercised and close follow up with ability to manage complications are integral components in working team. Delivery of more surgery in primary care has potential for enhancing patient-centred management by promoting the development of multi-specialty community providers and reducing length of hospital stay. The outpatient surgical centers provide many benefits and advantages for surgical patients with proper organizations, dedicated services, and meticulous procedures.

•Small field of view but increased magnification •Significant degradation of the view from media opacities or small pupil •Lacks ability to perform stereoscopic examination •Useful when slit-lamp exam not possible •Most commonly used system •Variable magnification and field of view • Reasonable view through small pupil • Good stereoscopic view •Less degradation of view from media opacities than direct ophthalmoscope •The magnification and stereopsis obtained with a slit-lamp system is generally superior to that of a handheld or headlamp-based system. • Poor magnification, with wide field of view •Least degradation of view from media opacities •Value of stereopsis limited by poor magnification Fair to poor with small pupils •May be useful for bedside exam or in the operating room • The vertical diameter of the optic nerve can be easily estimated during a slit-lamp exam by the following method: 1. A thin slit beam is focused on the nerve through the lens of choice. 2. The vertical length of the beam is adjusted to match the height of the disc. 3. The length of the beam is read off the slit-lamp beam scale. 4. The scale reading is adjusted by the correction factor of the specific lens. •This estimation is reasonably accurate, but it tends to underestimate disc size in high levels of myopia, and overestimate in high hyperopia. • One can also use the scale projection of the direct ophthalmoscope to estimate nerve head size, with no correction factor needed. The small light cone of the direct ophthalmoscope subtends an angle of about 5 degrees, about the same size as an average optic disc, and can give a quick estimate of relative size. • Stereo-photographs are the most helpful but are more difficult to obtain in a reproducible manner. •Cameras with a prism-based fixed-angle method of taking simultaneous stereo-photos tend to produce more consistent results, but are more expensive. • While non-mydriatic cameras exist, images suffer when the pupil is smaller than 4 mm, and dilation is commonly employed to obtain the best images.

Abstract (sommario):
Holmes may have admired Bertillon’s work, but that did not prevent him from being resentful about it in The Hound of the Baskervilles (HOUN). When Dr. James Mortimer told Holmes that Bertillon was the highest expert in Europe, Holmes admitted that he was off ended by the ranking. So who was this man held in such high regard? Alphonse Bertillon was a French anthropologist born in 1853. His poor academic performance was followed by difficulty holding a job. In 1879, his influential father Louis, a famous physician and anthropologist, obtained a job for him as a clerk with the Parisian police (Wagner 2006, 97–98). He started work in March 1879, and became interested in the problem of identifying recidivists, that is, repeat off enders. It was French policy to exile recidivists to their colonies (Cole 2001, 33). But there was no procedure for identifying them. Fingerprinting did not exist, and even mug shots were not yet used. Upon a second arrest, recidivists would merely use a pseudonym. Bertillon wanted to develop a system of identification based on ideas mentioned in 1840 by a Belgian statistician named Quetelet (Wagner 2006, 98). Bertillon found his job with the police to be very boring, as he collected and filed much information, most of it never used again and worthless. So, on October 1, 1879 (Cole 2001, 49), he submitted a report proposing a method of identification using body measurements. The report was ignored (Wagner 2006, 98). Louis Bertillon liked his son’s suggestion. Louis had in fact attempted to classify people, not identify them, by measuring the lengths of their bones. So he was naturally attracted to Alphonse’s idea to use such measurements to identify criminals (Cole 2001, 34). In 1882, with help from his influential father, Alphonse Bertillon was given two assistants and some funding. He was given three months to identify a repeat offender. He succeeded with one week remaining.
