Abstract (sommario):
Since its inception, the Cannes Film Festival was envisioned as a continuation, expansion and enhancement of the Riviera’s long-established cosmopolitan, carnivalesque and exclusive space. The Riviera’s cosmopolitanism was shaped by travel and the mobility of its international visitors, making it into a non-place; some of them, in addition, transformed the Riviera through their horticultural activity, thus literally rooting themselves in the Riviera. The particular version of the Riviera’s cosmopolitanism was mirrored in the internal architecture of the festival, in terms of its audiences and programming, which was international, elitist and characterised by the interplay of place and non-place. In this article, I argue that the origins of the festival as a cosmopolitan event are found in the nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century cultural history of the French Riviera—as it was rendered on the pages of the diarists who travelled to the region, and realised in the activities of the visual artists living and working there. I contend that the Cannes Film Festival replicates the dynamics and tensions inherent to the space in which it is settled—that of the French Riviera—and thus, it is not only rooted in the Riviera’s culture, but it is also a fascinating extension of the myth of the Riviera.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper aims to analyze the conditions under which the growth of short-term rental platforms affects standard rents, focusing on key destinations on the French Riviera. Following a literature review, we develop a simplified model capturing the characteristics of French Riviera destinations and predict a positive effect on rents in the short run when there is a high pressure from short-term rentals. We validate these predictions using data from AirDNA pertaining to short-term rentals offered on the Airbnb platform, combined with data on long-term rentals in the cities of Nice and Cannes.JEL classification: L83, R31, Z31, L85, L86.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Small amplitude tsunamis have impacted the French Mediterranean shore (French Riviera) in the past centuries. Some caused casualties; others only generated economic losses. While the North Atlantic and Mediterranean tsunami warning system is being tested and is almost operational, no awareness and preparedness measure is being implemented at a local scale. Evacuation is to be considered along the French Riviera, but no plan exists within communities. We show that various approaches can provide local stakeholders with evacuation capacities assessments to develop adapted evacuation plans through the case study of the Cannes–Antibes region. The complementarity between large- and small-scale approaches is demonstrated with the use of macro-simulators (graph-based) and micro-simulators (multi-agent-based) to select shelter points and choose evacuation routes for pedestrians located on the beach. The first one allows automatically selecting shelter points and measuring and mapping their accessibility. The second one shows potential congestion issues during pedestrian evacuations, and provides leads for the improvement of urban environment. Temporal accessibility to shelters is compared to potential local and distal tsunami travel times, showing a 40 min deficit for an adequate crisis management in the first scenario, and a 30 min surplus for the second one.

Abstract (sommario):
A Roman Anchovy's Tale author David Downie investigates contemporary Roman uses of salted anchovies, comparing them to the garum, liquamen, muria, colatura, and hallex fish sauces, pastes and brines of antiquity. His point of departure is a self-styled "archeological restaurant" in the Italian capital, Magna Roma, where co-owner Luciano Carigato and colleagues make authentic garum following an Imperial-era recipe. Downie also discusses regional variations of ancient fish sauces, specifically hallex (fermented fish paste), such as Ligurian machet and southern French mlets, still made today on the Italian and French Riviera.

Abstract (sommario):
Policy is a lever for initiating the structural and environmental changes that foster health-enhancing physical activity (HEPA) promotion. However, little is known about the evidence in support of local governments regarding their HEPA-promoting policies. The aim of this study was to collect comprehensive information on municipal HEPA policies on the French Riviera (Alpes-Maritimes and Var counties) to provide an overview of the development of these policies in this territory. Mid-sized cities from the two counties constituting the French Riviera were targeted (n = 17). In each city, a local tool for HEPA policy analysis, CAPLA-Santé, was used to gain information from key informants heading the departments of sports, health services, and social services. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis. Ten mid-sized cities volunteered to participate. Key informants from the sports (n = 10), health services (n = 5), and social services (n = 6) departments were interviewed. Written HEPA policy documents were formalized in six cities. These documents (n = 14) were mainly from the sports (n = 8) and health services (n = 4) sectors. The key informants reported that support from national policy, the commitment of elected officials, and large local stakeholder networks facilitated HEPA promotion, whereas the lack of intersectoral collaboration and limited resources were limitations. The results provide insight into the development of municipal HEPA policies, highlighting some of the barriers, facilitators, and perspectives. These findings could be valuable to scale up HEPA promotion at the local level.

Abstract (sommario):
The French Riviera is one of the Mediterranean areas that has been longest and most thoroughly impacted by human activities. Fucales are long-lived, large-sized brown algae that constitute a good model for studying human impact on species diversity. We gathered all historical data (literature and herbarium vouchers), since the early 19th century, to reconstruct their distribution. The current distribution was established from a 7-year (2007-2013) survey of the 212-km shoreline (1/2 500 map), by means of boating, snorkelling and scuba diving. Overall, 18 taxa of Cystoseira and Sargassum have been reported. Upon comparison with historical data, 5 taxa were no longer observed (C. elegans, C. foeniculacea f. latiramosa, C. squarrosa, C. spinosa var. spinosa and S. hornschuchii) while C. jabukae, previously unrecorded, was observed. In addition to these taxa, probably extinct at a local scale, some taxa had suffered a dramatic decline (C. barbata f. barbata, C. crinita, C. spinosa var. compressa and S. acinarium) or become nearly extinct (C. foeniculacea f. tenuiramosa). Three of them, which played in the past significant functional roles in coastal communities, can be considered as functionally extinct. Possible causes of decline and local extinction are discussed. A similar situation has already been reported, although at a much more local scale, in a variety of Mediterranean localities. The question therefore arises about the status of Fucales species in the Mediterranean: are some species on the brink of extinction? Is their extinction at the scale of the French Riviera the harbinger of their extinction Mediterranean–wide?

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The name Hasbrouk as used by F. Scott Fitzgerald in his 1937 story “A Full Life” obliquely references both the French photographer Hazebroucq and the American reformist editor John Whitbeck Hasbrouck (1821–1906), the former reference pointing to dramatic events in the lives of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald on the French Riviera in 1924, while the latter invokes the parallel lives of Lydia Sayer and Zelda Sayre as emancipated women who threw in their lots with famous husbands. The name proves instrumental in uncovering the covert strategy used by Fitzgerald to assess the role of Zelda Sayre in his personal as well as his professional life, resulting in an all but total indictment of her behavior, which had culminated in an affair with the French naval aviator Edouard Jozan that Fitzgerald fully considered an adulterous one. In the protracted course of its composition, “A Full Life” ceased to be an item intended for publication and became a confessional piece instead. Fitzgerald’s indictment of his wife thus stands as his candid and honest verdict, although possibly subject to some mitigation in his final years.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: Since the early 2000s, the accidental introduction of the tiger mosquito has exposed Europe to new diseases previously observed in Southern countries, leading to the onset of new nuisances and health risks. In France, the area first affected was the French Riviera. Based on the results of a qualitative and quantitative survey, this article analyses the reactions and concerns amongst the local population regarding the spread of Asian tiger mosquitoes and the related health risks. While residents are well aware of the mosquitoes’ presence and perceive a related increase in nuisances at different levels, they tend to play down the related health risks, notably due to the high degree of trust placed in the French healthcare system. It is the wealthiest inhabitants that are most affected by the problem, which primarily affects villa districts. Finally, cultural resistance has hindered the success of awareness-raising campaigns due to the stigma associated with mosquitoes.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractRiver mouths on the steep, high-relief coast of the French Riviera exhibit thick sequences of Holocene marine, estuarine, deltaic, and river channel-floodplain sediments that overlie basal fluvial Pleistocene gravel. Gravel is uncommon in most of the early to middle Holocene aggradational-progradational marine, estuarine, deltaic sediments, despite an ample supply from rock units in the steep adjoining uplands. River-mouth gravel is common only in late Holocene river channels and in barrier beaches perched on finer-grained nearshore sediments. Neither downslope grain-size fining on alluvial fans nor sediment stacking patterns during sea-level (base-level) rise readily account for the lack of early to middle Holocene gravel in the river-mouth sediment wedges. Holocene sea-level rise led to the storage of fine-grained sediments in shallow marine, estuarine, and deltaic environments in the present coastal zone. We infer that humid temperate conditions, a dense forest cover, landscape stabilization, and a regular quiescent river flow regime associated with the Atlantic climatic optimum limited gravel supply in the adjoining catchments and gravel entrainment downstream during the early Holocene. Sea-level stabilization in the middle and late Holocene coincided with a marked change in bioclimatic conditions toward the present Mediterranean-type regime, which is characterized by a less dense forest cover, soil erosion, and episodic catastrophic floods. The late Holocene was thus a time of downstream bedload channel aggradation, fine-grained floodplain and paludal sedimentation, and seaward flushing of clasts leading to the formation and consolidation of the gravel barrier beaches that bound the rivermouths and embayments.

Abstract (sommario):
The LYONNAISE DES EAUX Company has been managing the sanitation amenities for the town of VALLAURIS GOLFE-JUAN (a summer population of 35.000) since 1974, with a three-fold target:firstly, to arrange for the collection and disposal of the sewage effluent under all circumstances, despite the influx of tourists and without causing any inconvenience to users, secondly,to safeguard the appearance and condition of the beaches during the summer months by canalizing the estuary flow from the valleys and by pumping the runoff water seawards, thirdly, to treat the sewage from the town in order to discharge into the Mediterranean sea a good quality effluent which will not pollute the natural envi ronment. The targets were reached by using the most modern techniques: Sewage collection was optimized by installing a computerized management system for the networks, with regular monitored inspections and a preventive cleaning out programme carried out by specialist organizations. The sewage water was treated in an underwater plant in the Port of GOLFE-JUAN. This plant, which is partially automated and invisible on the site, discharges to the sea water which conforms with the foreseen purity levels at an acceptable operating cost.

By coupling these observations with those of the spaceborne instruments Cloud-Aerosol LIdar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP), Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI), and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometers (MODIS), the spatial extents of the aerosol structures are investigated. The origins of the aerosol plumes are determined using back trajectories computed by the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT). This synergy allowed us to highlight plumes of particulate pollutants moving in the low and medium free troposphere (up to ∼5 km above the mean sea level) towards the French Riviera. This pollution originates from the Spanish coast, more particularly from Costa Blanca (including Murcia) and Costa Brava–Costa Daurada (including Barcelona). It is mainly due to traffic, but also to petrochemical activities in these two regions. Desert aerosol plumes were also sampled by the lidar. The sources of desert aerosols have been identified as the Grand Erg Occidental and Grand Erg Oriental. During desert dust events, we highlight significant differences in the optical characteristics in terms of the backscatter-to-extinction ratio (BER, inverse of the lidar ratio) between the planetary boundary layer, with 0.024 sr−1 (∼42 sr), and the free troposphere, with 0.031 sr−1 (∼32 sr). These differences are greatly reduced in the case of pollution aerosol plume transport in the free troposphere (i.e., 0.021 and 0.025 sr−1). Transported pollution aerosols appear to have similar BER to what is emitted locally. Moreover, using the correlation matrix between lidar aerosol extinction profiles as a function of altitude, we find that during transport events in the low free troposphere, aerosols may be transferred into the planetary boundary layer. We also note that the relative humidity, which is generally higher in the planetary boundary layer (>80 %), is found to have no significant effect on the BER.

Abstract (sommario):
The roman villa at Saint-Cyr-les-Lecques (département of the Var, on the south east French Riviera) has been partiallly studied from the XVIIth century, by famous archaeologists such as abbot Barthélemy and Adrien Blanchet. The article is an essay for a synthesis using these preliminary reports but also a long unpublished account written by the architect M. R. Penchaud at the beginning of the 19th century. Eventually, Mrs. Cl. Varoqueaux, archaeo-logist of the CNRS, who made excavations on the site more recently, has also given a new contribution to confirm the chronology of the different phases of the construction. Paintings and mosaics of italic style are also more extensively described. Sculptures also authorized the hypothesis that the owner was a member of the equestrian order.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The French Mediterranean region is vulnerable to flooding caused by extreme rainstorm events. To better predict floods and anticipate consequences, the technical managing services operating on the field need to analyze the hydrological situation, receive accurate forecasts and issue alerts to the exposed population. Within this context, the various needed modelling tools are integrated within a common framework of a Decision Support System (DSS). This approach has been developed and implemented in the Cagne catchment located in the French Riviera. The Cagne catchment covers 96 km2 area and it is densely urbanized with high risks of inundation in the downstream area. The hydrological model MIKE SHE covers 96 km2 with a 20 m resolution. The river network is represented in a 1D MIKE 11 model by 18 branches and 1899 cross sections. The downstream area is covered with a high-resolution hydraulic model built with MIKE 21 FM. The model receives inputs from the hydrological model and can produce detailed inundation maps and forecasts. A major rainfall event observed from October to December 2020 is currently used as validation situation and the built modelling system has demonstrated its efficiency to reproduce the observed processes and to deliver the forecasts on due time.

Abstract (sommario):
Sowerby's beaked whale (Mesoplodon bidens) was previously known in the Mediterranean Sea from a single live stranding of two individuals in the French Riviera. We report here on two live sightings in the western Mediterranean, central-western Tyrrhenian Sea off eastern Corsica (Montecristo Trough) and off eastern Sardinia (Caprera Canyon) in 2010 and 2012, respectively. In both cases single individuals, possibly the same individual, occurred within groups of Cuvier's beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) suggesting inter-specific interactions. Based on our close observations of mixed-species groups of Sowerby's and Cuvier's beaked whales, we hypothesize that some previous long-distance sightings of beaked whales in the Mediterranean may not be reliably attributed to Z. cavirostris. The present sightings and previous live stranding indicate that the western Mediterranean Sea is the easternmost marginal area of M. bidens within the North Atlantic geographic range. Notes on behaviour are also provided.

Abstract (sommario):
The French Society of Toxinology (SFET) held its 30th Annual Meeting (RT30) on 2–3 December 2024 at Hôtel Le Saint Paul in Nice, France, on the beautiful French Riviera. It was the first time that the event was organized outside of Paris. The meeting brought together 74 participants and focused on the main theme, “Unlocking the Deep Secrets of Toxins”, which delved into cutting-edge research in the field of animal venoms and toxins from animal, plant, fungal, algal, mold and bacterial sources. The event emphasized the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of toxins, often influenced by environmental factors, their interactions with molecular or cellular ligands, their mechanisms of action and their potential applications in therapy. These key topics were explored in depth during oral communications and poster sessions across three main thematic areas, each dedicated to a specific aspect of toxinology. A fourth, more general session provided an opportunity for participants to present recent work that fell outside the main themes but still contributed valuable insights to the broader field. This report presents the abstracts of seven of the invited lectures, fifteen of the selected lectures and sixteen of the posters, following the authors’ agreement to publish them. Additionally, the names of the “Best Oral Communication” and “Best Poster” awardees are highlighted, recognizing the outstanding contributions made by early-career researchers and their innovative work in toxinology.
