Abstract (sommario):

The Velum, Oropharynx, Tongue base and Epiglottis (VOTE) classification on drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) is used widely for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome, though research into comparative physical examinations with VOTE on DISE is still limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the findings of physical examinations and DISE in patients with OSA. Fifty-five patients with OSA were enrolled in this retrospective study. All of the patients received clinical explorations including a Brodsky classification, a modified Mallampati score (MMS), a modified Friedman’s staging system, and a Muller’s test. Drug-induced sleep endoscopy was further evaluated in the operating room. There were significant relationships between Brodsky classification, modified Friedman’s staging system, Muller’s test and oropharynx collapse during DISE (p < 0.05). Brodsky classification, MMS, modified Friedman’s staging system and retropalatal lateral-to-lateral (L–L) collapse of Muller’s test were significantly correlated with VOTE count (p < 0.05). The concordance between VOTE under DISE and Brodsky classification or modified Friedman’s staging system was moderate. In contrast, the concordance between VOTE under DISE and MMS or Muller’s test was slight. The study revealed that Brodsky classification and Friedman staging had a significant relationship with DISE on the velum and oropharynx, but the level of tongue base is uncertain between DISE and MMS. Correlation of awake evaluation of tongue base is still not correlated to the DISE findings. Pre-treatment evaluation of DISE is still warranted.

Background and Purpose: Quantification of hepatic virtual iron content (VIC) by using Multidetector Dual Energy Computed Tomography (DECT) has been recently investigated since this technique could offer a good compromise between accuracy and non-invasiveness for liver iron content quantification. The aim of our study is to investigate differences in VIC at different DECT time points (namely baseline and arterial, venous and tardive phases), identifying the most reliable and also exploring the underlying temporal trend of these values. Materials and Methods: Eleven patients who underwent DECT examination and were characterized by low liver fat content were included in this retrospective study. By using the Syngo.via Frontier–DE IronVNC tool, regions of interest (ROI) were placed on the VIC images at 3 hepatic levels, both in left and right liver lobes, at each DECT time point. Friedman’s test followed by Bonferroni-adjusted Wilcoxon signed-rank test for post-hoc analysis was performed to assess differences between DECT timepoints. Page’s L test was performed to test the temporal trend of VIC across the 4 examined timepoints. Results: For both liver lobes, Friedman’s test followed by Bonferroni-adjusted Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed that VIC values differed significantly when extracted from ROIs placed at the 4 different timepoints. The Page’s L test for multiple comparison revealed a significant growing trend for VIC, from baseline acquisition to the fourth and last time point post-contrast agent injection. Conclusions: The extraction of hepatic VIC in healthy subjects was found to be significantly influenced by the DECT time point chosen for the extrapolation of the VIC values.

Abstract (sommario):

For the comparison of more than two independent samples the Kruskal-Wallis H test is a preferred procedure in many situations. However, the exact null and alternative hypotheses, as well as the assumptions of this test, do not seem to be very clear among behavioral scientists. This article attempts to bring some order to the inconsistent, sometimes controversial treatments of the Kruskal-Wallis test. First we clarify that the H test cannot detect with consistently increasing power any alternative hypothesis other than exceptions to stochastic homogeneity. It is then shown by a mathematical derivation that stochastic homogeneity is equivalent to the equality of the expected values of the rank sample means. This finding implies that the null hypothesis of stochastic homogeneity can be tested by an ANOVA performed on the rank transforms, which is essentially equivalent to doing a Kruskal-Wallis H test. If the variance homogeneity condition does not hold then it is suggested that robust ANOVA alternatives performed on ranks be used for testing stochastic homogeneity. Generalizations are also made with respect to Friedman’s G test.

Abstract (sommario):

Background: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of dietary education on glycemic control in patients with any type of diabetes at four-week and two-year follow-ups. Methods: A two-year prospective study was conducted in three phases: before, four weeks after, and two years after an educational program. The participants were patients diagnosed with diabetes who were receiving insulin or oral hypoglycemics and who attended the Diabetes Clinic of the General County Hospital Našice, Croatia to receive their treatment. The questionnaire and educational program were created for the purpose of this study. Measurements were made (fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, body mass index, blood pressure, knowledge test) at baseline, four weeks and two years after education. Results: A total of 109 participants took part in the study, of which 56 (51.4%) were on insulin therapy and 53 (48.6%) were on oral therapy, after two years, 78 (72%) subjects were followed up with. There was no control group. At the two-year follow-up, participants with insulin therapy had significantly higher glycated hemoglobin (Mann–Whitney U test, p = 0.035). Significant differences were observed in fasted blood glucose (Friedman’s test, p = 0.001), diastolic pressure (Friedman’s test, P = 0.018), and glycated hemoglobin (Wilcoxon test, p < 0.001) between Phase 1 and Phase 3. Conclusions: Education has a positive effect on adherence to recommended diet and glycemia regulation in diabetes patients after four-week follow-ups. However, after two years, participants showed a decrease in adherence to recommended diet and increased glycemia.

Abstract Objectives Nearly 50% of children with a mental health concern do not receive treatment. Child Psychiatry Access Programs like Behavioral Health Integration in Pediatric Primary Care (BHIPP) address regional shortages of mental health treatment access by providing training and consultation to primary care providers (PCPs) in managing mental health concerns. This study assessed PCPs’ comfort with mental health practices to inform expansion of BHIPP services. Methods Pediatric PCPs in 114 practices in three rural regions of Maryland were recruited to participate in a survey about their comfort with mental health practices and access to mental health providers for referral. Descriptives, Friedman’s test, and post hoc pairwise comparisons were used to examine survey responses. Results Participants were 107 PCPs. Most respondents were physicians (53.3%) or nurse practitioners/physician’s assistants (39.3%). Friedman’s test, χ2(7)= 210.15, p<.001, revealed significant within and between-group differences in PCP comfort with mental health practices. Post hoc pairwise comparisons indicated greater comfort providing mental health screening and referrals compared to prescribing psychiatric medications, providing psychoeducation or in-office mental health interventions. A Wilcoxon-signed rank test showed significantly more respondents agreed they could find a therapist than a psychiatrist in a timely manner, Z= −5.93, p<.001. Conclusions Pediatric PCPs were more comfortable with providing mental health assessment and referrals than treatment. However, PCPs reported difficulty finding therapists and psychiatrists for their patients. Findings underscore the need for longitudinal training to increase PCP comfort with mental health treatment. Additionally, strategies such as telepsychiatry are needed to address the disproportionate need for child psychiatrists.

Abstract (sommario):

This paper mainly deals with how kernel method can be used for software defect prediction, since the class imbalance can greatly reduce the performance of defect prediction. In this paper, two classifiers, namely, the asymmetric kernel partial least squares classifier (AKPLSC) and asymmetric kernel principal component analysis classifier (AKPCAC), are proposed for solving the class imbalance problem. This is achieved by applying kernel function to the asymmetric partial least squares classifier and asymmetric principal component analysis classifier, respectively. The kernel function used for the two classifiers is Gaussian function. Experiments conducted on NASA and SOFTLAB data sets usingF-measure, Friedman’s test, and Tukey’s test confirm the validity of our methods.

Abstract (sommario):

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to improve the Siloam Hospitals’ (SHs) patient satisfaction index (PSI) and overcome Indonesia’s geographical barriers. Design/methodology/approach The topic was selected for reasons guided by the Institute of Healthcare Improvement virtual breakthrough series collaborative (VBSC). Subject matter experts came from existing global quality development in collaboration with sales and marketing, and talent management agencies/departments. Patient satisfaction (PS) was measured using the SH Customer Feedback Form. Data were analysed using Friedman’s test. Findings The in-patient (IP) department PSI repeated measures comparison during VBSC, performed using Friedman’s test, showed a statistically significant increase in the PSI, χ2 = 44.00, p<0.001. Post hoc analysis with Wilcoxon signed-rank test was conducted with a Bonferroni correction applied, which resulted in a significant increase between the baseline and action phases (Z=3.317, p=0.003) between the baseline and continuous improvement phases (Z=6.633, p<0.001), and between the action and continuous improvement phases (Z=3.317, p=0.003), suggesting that IP PSI was continuously increasing during all VBSC phases. Like IP PSI, the out-patient department PSI was also continuously increasing during all VBSC phases. Research limitations/implications The VBSC was not implemented using a control group. Factors other than the VBSC may have contributed to increased PS. Practical implications The VBSC was conducted using virtual telecommunication. Although conventional breakthrough series might result in better cohesiveness and commitment, Indonesian geographical barriers forced an alternative strategy, which is much more cost-effective. Originality/value The VBSC, designed to improve PS, has never been implemented in any Indonesian private hospital group. Other hospital groups might also appreciate knowing about the VBSC to improve their PSI.

Abstract (sommario):

There is a growing interest in robust and nonparametric methods with engineering applications, due to the nature of the data. Here, we study two power systems engineering applications that employ or recommend robust and nonparametric methods; topology error identification and voltage calibration. Topology errors are a well-known, well-documented problem for utility companies. A topology error occurs when a line's status in a power network, whether active or deactive, is misclassified. This will lead to an incorrect Jacobian matrix used to estimate the unknown parameters of a network in a nonlinear regression model. We propose a solution using nonlinear regression techniques to identify the correct status of every line in the network by deriving a statistical model of the power flows and injections while employing Kirchhoff's Current Law. Simulation results on the IEEE-118 bus system showed that the methodology was able to detect where topology errors occurred as well as identify gross measurement errors. The Friedman Two-Way Analysis of Variance by Ranks test is advocated to calibrate voltage measurements at a bus in a power network. However, it was found that the Friedman test was only slightly more robust or resistant in the presence of discordant measurements than the classical F-test. The resistance of a statistical test is defined as the fraction of bad data necessary to switch a statistical conclusion. We mathematically derive the maximum resistance to rejection and to acceptance of the Friedman test, as well as the Brown-Mood test, and show that the Brown-Mood test has a higher maximum resistance to rejection and to acceptance than the Friedman test. In addition, we simulate the expected resistance to rejection and to acceptance of both tests and show that on average the Brown-Mood test is slightly more robust to rejection while on average the Friedman test is more robust to acceptance.

A análise de sobrevivência é uma das áreas da estatística que mais tem crescido nos últimos anos. Em Agronomia, é usada para analisar dados de tempo de vida de plantas, tempo de resistência de pragas, etc. Na Medicina, é ainda mais freqüente o seu uso, para a análise de tempo de vida (ou sobrevivência) de pacientes submetidos a diferentes tratamentos. Esta área da estatística necessita de métodos e procedimentos específicos para análise, pelo fato de serem considerados os tempos censurados. Os métodos desenvolvidos em análise de sobrevivência permitem que dois ou mais tratamentos sejam comparados por meio de suas curvas de sobrevivência utilizando-se procedimentos e testes específicos. Assim, o presente trabalho apresenta e discute conceitos, métodos e testes de comparação de curvas de sobrevivência, e propõe a utilização de um outro teste para comparar curvas de sobrevivência: o Teste de Friedman. Os resultados obtidos na comparação dos testes demonstram que é possível a utilização do Teste de Friedman para comparar curvas de sobrevivência.

D’un point de vue théorique, la délégation de la gestion au sein de l’industrie des fonds communs de placement présente un conflit d’intérêt important. Les investisseurs désirent maximiser leur rendement ajusté pour leur risque, tandis que les gestionnaires sont davantage motivés par leurs propres intérêts personnels. Le présent mémoire s’intéresse à l’incidence du rendement d’un gestionnaire sur son comportement de prise de risque. Brown al. (1996) font partie des premiers auteurs à étudier ce phénomène, qu’ils appellent l’effet tournoi. L’hypothèse de tournoi amené par ceux-ci stipule que les gestionnaires ayant connu de mauvaises performances relativement aux pairs pendant les six premiers mois d’une année sont tentés d’altérer le risque de leur portefeuille avant la fin de l’année. Leur motivation est de ne pas finir en bas du classement relatif. Notre échantillon est composé de 16 965 fonds communs de placement américains orientés croissance et petites capitalisations croissance, sur la période du 2 janvier 1996 au 31 décembre 2012. Nous testons d’abord l’hypothèse de tournoi dans notre échantillon avec des mesures de risque total et systématique ex post et ex ante, via des tables de contingence et de tests de Friedman (1920). Nous visons ainsi à confronter la littérature qui emploie majoritairement des mesures de risque réalisées, ainsi que des tables de contingence. Nos résultats montrent que le choix de la mesure de risque a une incidence importante sur les conclusions relatives à l’hypothèse de tournoi. Nous exposons par ailleurs que les gestionnaires aux rendements relatifs les plus faibles au cours des six premiers mois de l’année (les perdants) ont l’intention de hausser davantage leur risque total et systématique conditionnel au cours du dernier semestre de l’année, comparativement aux autres gestionnaires (les gagnants). Nous analysons ensuite spécifiquement le comportement des gestionnaires gagnants de fonds communs de placement. Plus précisément, nous vérifions si le risque systématique (résiduel) des fonds communs de placement se rapproche de un (zéro) suite à l’évaluation relative des gestionnaires. À cet effet, nous employons des tests de Friedman (1920) avec deux blocs temporels de deuxième période, à savoir un mois et six mois. Nos résultats exposent bien la dynamique de la prise de risque de ces gestionnaires. En outre, nos conclusions relatives au bloc temporel d’un mois sont davantage significatives et concluantes, en regard à nos hypothèses.

This research was conducted to identify whether South African 3 star and above hotels are interested in forming alliances. The objective of this study was to group South African independent 3 star and above hotels on the alliance framework continuum, namely; cooperation, collaboration, coordination and coadunation; and to identify whether South African independent 3 star and above hotels are interested to progress from one simple form of alliance to the next complex, formal type of alliance. Hypotheses were proposed to determine the significance of the differences in preference of South African 3 star and above independent hotels. Thus, this study is descriptive in nature, to test the proposed hypotheses. An extensive investigation into the relevant literature was done. An empirical study was also conducted and the measuring instrument consisted of a selfadministered questionnaire. The population selected consisted of managers of these South African 3 star and above independent hotels. The major findings included: South African independent 3 star and above hotels seem to prefer niche personality and potential non-financial relationship, while they try to avoid economic and cultural integration with a partner firm and not interested in shared management control with the partner firm. Besides, four factors confirmed the alliance continuum developed by Bailey and Koney (2000), namely; cooperation, coordination, collaboration and coadunation. Friedman’s test indicated that there is significant difference among the different dimensions of alliance formation, namely; cooperation, collaboration, coordination and coadunation and that South African independent 3 star and above hotels are interested to form cooperation form of alliances mostly, followed by coordination form of alliances. South African independent 3 star and above hotels are neutral on whether to form collaboration type of alliances and they are not interested to involve in the coadunation form of alliances. Chi-square test indicated that there is no significant difference on the opinion of the respondents on whether the hotel they work for needs to progress from simpler form of alliances into more formal and complex format of alliances. However, those who preferred that their hotel has to progress from simpler form of alliance are higher in number than those who did not prefer. It was, inter alia, recommended that as South African 3 star and above hotels choose lower form of alliance, value chains seem the most applicable form of alliance. Hotels could share a name, reservation information and some basic IT facilities (point of sale IT reservation equipment and back office IT equipments). Finally, the study concludes by recommending that South African independent 3 star and above hotels should take alliances as an option for growth and justification of expenditures and decide the level of alliance continuum they want to engage in.

What is a fair income distribution? The empirical literature seems to assume that equal income would be fair, but the equal income answer faces two objections. First, equal income is likely to be inefficient. This book sets aside efficiency concerns as a downstream consideration; it seeks to identify a fair distribution. The second objection—pointed out by both leftist political philosopher G. A. Cohen and conservative economist Milton Friedman—is that equal income is unfair to the hardworking. Measuring labor burdens in order to adjust income shares, however, is no easy task. Some philosophers and economists attempt to sidestep the measurement problem by invoking the envy test. Yet a distribution in which no one prefers someone else’s circumstances to her own, as the envy test requires, is unlikely to exist—and, even if it does exist, the normative connection between the envy test and fairness has not been established. The Solidarity Solution provides a novel answer: when someone claims that her situation should be improved at someone else’s expense, she must be able to give a reason that cannot be rejected by a free and equal individual who regards everyone else as the same. Part I develops the solidarity solution and shows that rigorous distributive implications can be derived from a relational ideal. Part II uses the solidarity solution to critique the competing theories of Ronald Dworkin, Philippe Van Parijs, and Marc Fleurbaey. Finally, part III identifies insights for the gender wage gap and taxation.

Abstract (sommario):

This study is implemented to investigate the effects of 3D animated movies and interactive applications on visual motor development of five year old children. The research has been performed in pretest-posttest-permanence test, experimental pattern with control group. For four months, every fifteen day experimental groups (24 children) watched eight episodes of 3D animated movies; 12 of them performed the interactive applications with computer while the other 12 performed the same applications with worksheets. 14 children in control group engaged merely their preschool education. Test of Visual Motor Skills-3 was used to collect and evaluate the visual motor skills of children. Since the data of the research was not distributed normally, non-parametric Kruskal Wallis, Friedman and Wilcoxon tests were used to analyze the data. The results of the research show that the visual motor skills of children who engaged the study in both test and control groups, had improved significantly.

We have described the Jordan Rollover System (JRS), a dynamic rollover test fixture, in previous reports (Friedman and Nash 2002 and Friedman et al., 2003). The JRS addresses the shortcomings — lack of repeatability and control over test conditions — of previous rollover tests and test devices including various static, drop, and dynamic roll tests. The JRS is designed to emulate specific roof impacts in actual multiple rollovers in a highly repeatable, controlled test. The JRS holds a passenger compartment at the desired pitch and yaw between two drop towers. The vehicle is rotated about its roll axis and, at the appropriate time, the front end is dropped to contact a moving roadway at a prescribed road speed; roll rate; drop height; and roll, pitch and yaw angles. Vehicle parameters can be changed and anthropomorphic crash test dummies added depending upon the variables being tested. We have conducted tests with production vehicles illustrating the performance of production roofs under controlled test situations and at varying strength-to-weight ratios. One such test is described here.
