The laryngeal mask airway, the LMA® Gastro™ (Teleflex Medical, Athlone, Ireland), is a novel airway device which permits upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy to be performed via a dedicated large calibre oesophageal lumen. It has been validated in adult studies, but to our knowledge, there have been no data published regarding its use in a paediatric population. Following a brief education programme, the LMA Gastro was introduced on a trial basis at our institution and made freely available. Over a four-month period, our pre-existing endoscopy audit framework captured data on a total of 55 pa

Abstract (sommario):
A growing body of evidence suggests that a variety of upper respiratory symptoms (URS) are associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux (GORD). The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of endoscopic erosive, and non-erosive, oesophagitis among patients complaining of persistent URS, in the absence of typical GORD symptoms, and to compare them with a comparison group of similar age. A group of 110 patients aged 18–75, presenting with persistent URS with no suspicion of GORD symptoms, underwent upper flexible endoscopy, with biopsy sampling for histology, and was compared with a group

Background: Mallory-Weiss tear is mainly located across the gastro-esophageal mucosal junction and presents with upper gastro-intestinal bleed of less severity. Haemorrhage frequently ceases spontaneously.Aims and Objective: This study was undertaken to establish the incidence, clinical and endoscopic profile of patients with Mallory- Weiss tear.Materials and Methods: Six hundred patients presenting with acute upper gastro-intestinal (UGI) bleed were included in the study. All patients underwent UGI endoscopy after achieving haemodynamic stability, usually within 24 hours. Cases with Mallory W

Objectives: Gross description of gastro-intestinal malignancy is facilitated by endoscopy of the upper and lower gastro-intestinal tract and also provides tissue for definitive diagnosis. Currently, direct vision endoscopic forceps biopsy & FNAC are two standard techniques used to establish a preoperative diagnosis in gastro-intestinal malignancies. The objective of our study is to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of endoscopic findings when combined with fine needle aspiration and endoscopic biopsy in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal malignancies. So, we compare both techniques (endoscop

In a prospective study, 26 patients with symptoms of reflux oesophagitis underwent a barium examination for gastro-oesophageal reflux after food stimulation, and endoscopy with biopsy from different levels of the oesophagus. Radiologic grading of the gastro-oesophageal reflux depending on the height of the reflux into the oesophagus was performed, and this was correlated to the microscopic appearance at different levels in the oesophagus. Complete agreement between the radiologic grading and the histology was found in 69 per cent of the cases, and when ***gastro-oesophageal reflux was demonstr

AbstractThe authors evaluated the role of endoscopic techniques in the diagnosis and in the potential treatment of neuroendocrine tumors (NET) localized in the gastro-entero-pancreatic system, on the basis of their experience and of the international literature. NET are rare tumors that arise from neuroendocrine cells of the gastrointestinal tract and pancreas. It is a possibility that both the digestive endoscopy and EUS play an important role in the diagnosis, staging and surveillance of this disease. In some cases, especially in the early stages, surgical endoscopy allows the treatment of s

A total of 212 patients undergoing elective upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were prospectively studied. They were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups: (I) sedation with no supplemental oxygen; (II) no sedation and no oxygen supplementation; (III) sedation and supplemental oxygen; and (IV) no sedation but supplemental oxygen. Oxygen desaturation occurred in all the groups except group IV and was worsened by sedation. Supplemental oxygen corrected the desaturation in the sedated patients and minimized the associated haemodynamic changes. The duration of the endoscopy procedure was

The small bowel tumor diagnosis is often late, in the course of this affection, which is explained by the low number of tumors and crude symptomatology (abdominal pain, wight loss, queasiness, vomit, ocult bleeding of gastro-intestinal tract). There is no unique investigation method of the small bowel for patient suspect of SMT. Choices are either X-ray (CT-scan, enteroclysis etc.) or endoscopic (upper endoscopy, wireless video endoscopy etc.). It has not been decided upon the best strategy or the series of investigations. An example being, instances where patients with liver cirrhosis present with UGIB stemming from probable esophageal varices. However, among many contraindication for the procedure, acute ST elevation myocardial infarction is perhaps the most absolute (whose, post-PCI adjuvant pharmaceutical treatment too may result in UGIB). Since comorbidities are common among chronic liver disease patients, instances of such contraindications are becoming common.
