Abstract (sommario):
AbstractLandslides in Champlain Sea clays have played an important role in shaping Eastern Ontario’s landscape. Despite extensive research, there is a limited understanding of the relations between landslide activity, climatic controls, and the geomorphic evolution of river valleys in Champlain Sea clay deposits. With these issues in mind, a study was undertaken to determine the controls on the spatio-temporal distribution of contemporary landslide activity in valley slopes composed of Champlain Sea clay. The study area was the Green’s Creek valley located in the east end of Ottawa, Ontario. O

The method of soil stabilization is well known and has been used throughout the world for many decades to improve some soil properties. Although many researchers have studied the effect of adding a cementing agent to a soil, not many of these researchers have explored the effect of treatment on the resulting properties of high water content soils like dredged material. Also, there has been little work concerning the prediction of the mechanical changes to the soil. Therefore, this paper summarizes the results of a research project conducted to define the general mechanical behavior of high wat

The most abundant iron sulphide minerals in igneous, metamorphic, and some sedimentary rocks are FeS2 (pyrite/marcasite) and Fe1-xS (pyrrhotite). The oxidation of pyrite and pyrrhotite in bedrock aggregates and mine tailings is undesirable to infrastructure and the environment because such chemical reactions are linked with concrete deterioration and acid mine drainage, respectively. The oxidation rate of pyrrhotite is up to one hundred times greater than that of pyrite; thus, pyrrhotite oxidation is of particular concern to society. The Devonian strata in New York State were the standard section for North America for over 100 years, and remain a significant reference for regional to global correlation and research. Since publication of L. V. Rickard’s (1975) New York Devonian correlation chart, various higher-resolution stratigraphic analyses have been employed, sometimes at bed-by-bed scale. These include sequence-, bio-, event-, chemo-, and other -stratigraphic approaches, along with increasingly finer-resolution geochronologic dating of airfall volcanic tephras. An approximate value of the horizontal effective stress in an overconsolidated clay deposit is often determined from an estimate of the effective stress ratio, K0, using the equation [Formula: see text]. For evaluating K0 in sensitive clays of eastern Canada, a testing program has been initiated on three different sites representing a large range of overconsolidation ratios. The recognition of these new gravitational events, in addition to the well-known C.E. 1929 Grand Banks earthquake-induced landslide, indicates that approximately one large landslide event per 1000 years has occurred offshore eastern Ca

ABSTRACT Turbidity currents in submarine canyons transport large volumes of sediment and carbon to the deep sea and are known to present a major risk to submarine infrastructure. Understanding the origin, the triggers, the recurrence, and the timing of these events is important for predicting future events and mitigating their impact. Depending on the morphological and latitudinal setting of submarine canyons, different external controls will govern the recurrence of turbidity currents. Here, we assess the recurrence of turbidity currents in shelf-incising submarine canyons off eastern Canada

Coal petrographic techniques have been used to trace the origin of coal used to produce artifacts by the Thule people in north-eastern Greenland. The coal artifacts were collected from the north-east coast settlements between 76°55'–80°18'N and date back to the 15th century A.D. The petrographic data suggest that they have a common source, the Middle Jurassic coals outcropping south of 75°15' in north-eastern Greenland. It is thus evident that the Thule people used local material rather than bringing the coal from the known “mines” in Arctic Canada. It also implies that contemporaneous Thule p

Abstract (sommario):
Concerns about the effect of pesticides on our environment has stimulated questions about the direction of future research in weed science. Knowledge of crop losses due to weeds would be helpful in guiding research objectives by identifying areas of greatest need. A survey was conducted in 1991 to estimate losses due to weeds in 58 commodities in Canada. Data generated included: percent loss in production, quantity loss in production, and loss of production value (monetary value) for each commodity in each province. The estimated average annual losses caused by weeds in the 58 commodities were
