here are a number of adverbialized individual words and adverbs without suffixes in Lithuanian slang and non-normative language. Most of them are assimilated borrowings adapted to the language system. Adaptive adverbialization of borrowed adverbs is determined by certain systemic features which are related to the territorial dialects of the Lithuanian language and the standart language. When the Slavic formants of the borrowed individual words are phonetically adapted, analogous hybrid derivatives with that formant are already available in Lithuanian slang. There are few adverbs derived from t

Abstract (sommario):
The authors of this paper discuss German loanwords in Croatian language, some of which have been used for centuries. Although the efforts for linguistic purity in Croatian have suppressed many of them from use, the remaining German loanwords are most pervasive in colloquial uses of Croatian language speakers. Since their frequency and dynamism among the speakers has occasionally resulted in changes their meaning, the present paper explores those changes incurred through ellipsis. The corpus for the study is novel Kužiš, stari moj by Zvonimir Majdak, characterized by “slang” of Zagreb’s milieu.

In the late 1970s a new music movement, rooted in British punk and New Wave music, emerged in West Germany. It distinctly was not only sung in German, but the lyrics played with the German language by adding Dadaistic elements or youth slang, and reflected on the political, cultural and social zeitgeist of late Cold War West Germany. Over the years this formerly underground music genre was labelled ‘Neue Deutsche Welle’ (NDW) and became a commercial success, both domestically and abroad: Artists like Peter Schilling became known in the United States, the biggest hit ‘99 Luftballons’ by the ban

This contribution discusses a dictionary analysis of Germanisms in Lo slang di Bolzano by Paolo Cagnan 2011, the first study of German lexemes in the informal registers of this variety. The aim is to determine the degree of integration into the Italian language and to compare the Germanisms with those in other specialised dictionaries. A comparison with the semantic correspondences of previous research contributions is also made. It shows that results show that the vast majority of the lexemes studied have a low degree of integration into Italian and can hardly be found in other dictionaries o

French, Belgian, Russian, Indian English, and German (among others) all attracted his attention. As he explored, articles and advertisements in the British press appeared in Flemish or French, directly addressing the shifting constitution of the Home Front in the wake of war. Clark’s interest in Indian English is richly documented. French, in particular, claimed a topical currency, infusing trench slang (and reported speech) alongside popular r

Abstract Languages are not static, but are constantly changing: the latest slang comes and goes, our own language is subtly, but noticeably, different from that of our grandparents, and the further back we go in time the more remote and incomprehensible the language seems to be. Shakespeare's language is difficult for us; Chaucer's even more so; and should we be bold enough to peruse the writings of King Alfred, who lived in the ninth century, we will barely understand a word, even though he wrote in 'English'. At the same time, we also notice that some foreign languages, such as German or Dut

They circulated in and beyond the trenches and often contained humorous content, soldiers’ slang, and songs. The best-known trench journal is probably the Wipers Times, but the phenomenon manifested itself across language borders and stimulated authorship and creativity among soldiers. The English verb brag turned up in texts in the 14th century. The obsolete adjective brag ‘boastful’ antedates it in texts by about fifty years. The origin of both entails several difficulties: (1) words for boasting are usually “low” (slangy), and slang tends to defy etymologizing; (2) words beginning with br- often refer to noise, and, since they are onomatopoeic, they can violate sound correspondences; (3) brag resembles several words in other languages, and it remains unclear whether it and its look-alikes elsewhere are native in their languages or borrowed.
