Abstract (sommario):
In 1979, Douglas Hofstadter published a Pulitzer prizewinning classic, Gödel, Escher, Bach: an eternal golden braid [1], henceforward referred to as GEB. I have presented a course at La Salle University based on GEB eleven times during the last twenty-one years. From these experiences, I present below some useful strategies for instructors who are interested in teaching a course where at least half of GEB is covered in some depth.

Abstract (sommario):
A Typogenetics is a formal system designed to study origins of life from a “primordial soup” of DNA molecules, enzymes and other building materials. It was introduced by Hofstadter (1979) in his seminal book Dialogues with Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid. Autoreplicating molecules and systems of mutually replicating and catalyzing molecules (autoreplicators and hypercycles) are modeled in the present paper in a form composed of two strands of symbols. These strands are vehicle of two fold information: The first one corresponds to information that is transferred by strands. The sec

Abstract (sommario):
Douglas Hofstadter's "Metamagical Themas: Questing for the Essence of Mind and Pattern" is not the Hofstadter book people probably expected to eventually turn up in a Passages column, to be honest. And I do not want to disparage his most famous work; I read Godel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid (GEB) one Christmas vacation, I believe when I was in the eighth grade, and it was a revelatory and enchanting experience, with a profound impact on the course of my future life. But everyone knows about that book, and has an opinion on it; I think it's a literary masterpiece and even when it get

Abstract (sommario):
The idea for When We Collide sprang from Douglas Hofstader’s metaphor of creativity as the meeting between records and record players, appearing in his 1979 book "Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid". In our case, the records are soundfiles, whilst the record player is a generative system. The player analyses, selects, mixes, transforms, and spatialises the material created by the composers (monophonic and quadraphonic soundfiles). The system negotiates between algorithms that tend towards monotony (in terms of loudness, spatialisation, and frequency spectrum) and algorithms that tend

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT And concrete diction Carl Jonas Love Almqvist’s Drottningens juvelsmycke (The Queen's Tiara; 1834) is, along with Amorina, the work primarily associated with the ”poetic fugue” – a concept the author develops in ”Om enheten av epism och dramatism; en aning om den poetiska fugan” (”On the unity of epism and dramatism; a notion of the poetic fugue”; 1821); an essay often considered vague and theoretical by researchers in the field. The meaning of the poetic fugue has been regarded unclear, but mainly considered as some kind of synthesis of epic and dramatic writing. This essay argues th
